Is This You?: Escape or Escapade

If you have never wanted to escape to a warm beach, feel the sand between your toes, drink some fruity drink with an umbrella in it while listening and watching wave after wave rolling in causing that line of foam and deposits of seashells and pieces of seaweed and other ocean goodies, or some other scenario of peacefulness and tranquility, well I say hurray for you. You are one of the few people absolutely content. Content every second of every minute, hour, day, week — well you get the idea. I know of no one who is that content. So we dream of escape, if just for a moment in time.

I know of a fitting story here. Trying to escape what he sees as his hum drum world and get himself into a world of no worries a man asks God how much $1 million is to Him. He says it’s no more than a penny in the man’s world. Then the man asks Him, how long is eternity? God replies, “It is but just a moment in man’s time.” The man, being man, thinking he can put one over on the big guy, then says to God, “May I have penny?” God, as only God’s humor can, looks at the human and says, “Just a moment.”

This man has just had his escape turn into an escapade. Like many of us do as we try our very best to have the perfect vacation/escape. Perfect, of course, is in the eye of the beholder. My perfect vacation has not been envisioned as of yet. I have too many variables that cannot become one vacation. I like the beach, but not the bugs. I like the mountains, but not the bugs. I like the city, but not the bugs. I like little country towns and antique stores, but not the bugs. See a theme here? One gal I know likes all those things but doesn’t like to interact with people. People, bugs, semantics.

Like I see a bugless beach, and who doesn’t start there? White, warm sand, blue water just barely lapping at the shells and sea glass glittering in a curvy line. I see me, reclining in a white wicker lounger covered with one of those Egyptian thousand thread count fluffy towels I’m not going to have to wash the sand out of when I am done with it. Then I look up to see what I think is a waiter carrying a tray of tall cold fruity somethings, ice clinking frosty glass as he seems to glide across the sand in his beach attire and flip flops. I reach for the bright yellow one, my hand nearly shaking with anticipation of the coolness of the drink hitting the back of my throat. Then my realistic self reaches over and slaps my fantasy self up alongside the head and I start to think of how much all that would cost and my escape has again turned into and escapade. Boy, one of these days I will get to touch that drink and take a big ole slurp. I have such class!

This doesn’t just apply to vacations. No this could be just an ordinary day. No cold fruity ones gliding your way, just a straight forward day. You get all ready to mow the lawn escaping into back and forth calmness of mowing and the mower doesn’t start, or it’s out of gas, needs the blades sharpened or a herd of mice have decided to lay claim to the inside of the grass catcher bag and you find this out just as you lift the bag off the nail it’s hanging on in the garage and all the little inhabitants scurry out and use you as an escape ladder. Escapade. Or you’re ready to do laundry escaping into swish-garble swish-garble of the machine that doesn’t ask you, “What’s for lunch?” and find you’re out of bleach, or the dryer doesn’t dry, or the cat has jumped up onto what he thinks is the top of the washer to find the lid open and he falls into a half full tub of water and claws his way out and over the top of you to get away. Escapade. Kind of makes you wonder why we even try to escape. Seems the best thing to do might just get up in the morning, put on your armor and meet your escapade with a cold fruity something in your hand. Classic Trina.

Pakistan's women-only motorized rickshaw avoids male pests

A Pakistani environmentalist, fed up with being groped and harassed by male auto-rickshaw drivers, has launched her own service exclusively for women passengers and drivers in her home city of Lahore – with just the one rickshaw on the road so far.

Zar Aslam, president of Pakistan’s nonprofit Environment Protection Fund, said she once narrowly escaped kidnapping by a rickshaw driver when she was a student, which triggered the idea of launching her “Pink Rickshaw” service.

Pakistan is notorious for sexual abuse of women, euphemistically known as “Eve-teasing.” Offenders often go unpunished within a legal system that can treat the victims as the guilty party.

“This is another step towards women’s financial and professional empowerment,” Ms. Aslam told Reuters at her home in Lahore, showing off her first rickshaw. “I and my co-workers face harassment by male auto drivers or by passersby while waiting for public transport.”

The “rickshaws” are covered three-wheel motorcycles, and Aslam bought one to start with, added fans, doors, and headlights, and painted it pink and white.

The plan is to have at least 25 up and running by the end of the year, with the Aslam looking out for sponsors.

“One auto costs 300,000 rupees [about $3,000], therefore it cannot be done without sponsorship from donors,” she said, adding that the government has not offered any assistance.

“We will lease out the autos to deserving females on easy installment,” Aslam says. “We will teach them driving and will also help them get the driving license.”

Delphi's Audi SQ5 Completes the First Autonomous Trans-American Trip

Source: Delphi

Delphi Automotive PLC, a technologies supplier for the automotive world, has just done what many would have deemed impossible a decade ago: It went on a coast-to-coast road trip in an Audi that drives itself. An autonomous Audi SQ5 made the record-setting 3,400-mile journey in nine days and was only manually operated 1% of the time, according to Delphi. This is huge news for the automotive industry, especially since the entire trip went off without a hitch and the system is still reportedly “bug-free.”

Many people out there are probably still wondering what makes a car fully autonomous. Autonomous, or automated cars, rely on a bevy of lasers, cameras, satellites, and computers to monitor their surroundings so that the vehicle can “drive itself.” This requires a complex maze of advancements (not to mention countless man hours), but the notion is finally beginning to gather steam. And while there may not be any fully autonomous cars on the roadways today due to legality issues, it is just a matter of time before we start seeing them on showroom floors.

When Delphi announced last March that it planned on putting a car on autopilot and sending it from one side of America to another, there were some concerns. The feeling of being “out of control” while going 65 miles per hour down an interstate can be a terrifying notion to some. There are also issues with legalities, because if the car gets into an accident, who is to blame? No one was technically driving the car at the time, so surely the computer and Delphi aren’t going to want to take the blame. Insuring such a vehicle will require some bureaucratic gymnastics, as well.

But qualms and concerns aside, there’s new hope that the U.S.  government gives its approval for auto manufacturers to start equipping cars with an autopilot button. According to CBS News, this design “could be ready for market as early as 2020.” These sensor-laden, self-driving “smart cars” really are what sci-fi fans have been pining for all along, and with new advancements in laser technology leading the way, the future looks bright for anyone wanting a self-driving car. But that’s still a bit of a stretch from where we are today, so for the time being, let’s review what Delphi has discovered.

Source: Delphi

According to Delphi, this 3,400-mile road trip was designed to “demonstrate the full capabilities of its active safety technologies with the longest automated drive ever attempted in North America.” Delphi engineers had already seen stellar results from previous testing, both in California and on the streets of Las Vegas, so they decided to throw the system into the deep end of the pool to see if it could stay afloat. A cross-country trip of this magnitude would also give the engineers a chance to gather critical data and monitor system functions in a much wider variety of environments, which is near impossible to achieve in a lab setting.

Delphi’s autopilot system works, as the car is currently sitting pretty on the East Coast without a scratch on it, and there haven’t been any reports of electrical fires, issues with steering response times, or zealous donuts being cut in parking lots across America. The Audi SQ5 came equipped with a lot of tech from the factory, but instead of stripping down the car, Delphi opted instead to build on what was already there. The Delphi engineers now have a lot of features to thank for their successful peregrination from San Francisco to New York last month.

The entire setup is built around a radar- and vision-based camera system that feeds into the car’s Advanced Drive Assistance Systems (ADAS), along with a high-end microprocessor that drives everything at once. According to Delphi, the car’s software enables the vehicle to make “complex, human-like decisions for real-world automated driving” and features things like traffic jam assistance, an automated highway pilot that helps with lane changes, an automated urban pilot for inner city adventures, and an automated parking and valet function for when it’s time to hop out of the car.

Delphi also gives the vehicle the ability to make real-life choices, like when to go at a four-way stop with people at every stop sign, timing a highway merge with semis blocking the way, or calculating the best way to get around bicyclists who think the road is all theirs.

When the trip was complete, all of the data collected during this drive was turned over to Delphi HQ for further analysis in the hopes of furthering advancements in the “active safety technology field,” which, according to Delphi is “the most rapidly growing technology sector of the auto industry.” And while it may have been an exhaustively long trip, with the engineers seeing a whopping 15 states in just nine days, at least they didn’t have to worry about driver’s fatigue. They didn’t even have to worry about construction zones, overly aggressive drivers, disgruntled truckers, twisting tunnels, or bad weather conditions. The only thing they had to do on occasion was top off the tank and make sure that the snack bag was properly packed.

Source: Delphi

According to its website, Delphi’s goal is to make products that are “scalable, flexible, and affordable,” all while continuously working with automakers to expedite the process of making automated vehicles a feasible option in the near future. “Our comprehensive product portfolio and vehicle integration expertise uniquely positions Delphi as one of only a handful of companies with the ability to provide automakers complete automated driving solutions,” says company CTO Jeff Owens.

So the test was a smashing success, Delphi is working on building relationships with auto manufacturers like never before, and it looks like the tech-savvy specialist might be paving the way for further advancements in the world of automotive engineering and autonomously driven cars as a whole. But what does all of this mean for the consumer and American roadways?

Without question, there are quite a few considerations the Department of Transportation has to weigh before cutting everyone loose in a bunch of self-driving cars. There is the issue we mentioned earlier that highlights insurance claim issues when an accident takes place. And if someone wants to file a lawsuit because a life was lost in an accident, who gets the court summons, since no one is technically driving the car? Then there is the issue with split-second decision making. Will the car choose to save the driver or the pedestrian, and who gets the blame when the smoke clears?

These and many other heavy-handed questions have plagued the autonomously driven car since its inception and will undoubtedly continue to do so for quite a while longer. There is no getting around the fact that cars continue to be a lethal element in our daily lives, and the government needs to consider every possible scenario before signing off on a bill that allows drivers the ability to relinquish control and be completely “along for the ride.” But with success stories like this leading the way, and creative masterminds like Rinspeed’s Frank M. Rinderknecht creating cars that thrive on autopilot, the future of transportation is sure to involve dozing off behind the wheel to better guarantee that a well-rested traveler arrives at a destination on time.

Help for men to look after health

First published in Bradford

MEN were encouraged to look after their health when Manningham Healthy Living Initiative and the Central and East European Liaison Service held a Men’s Health Event at Carlisle Business Centre.

Participants were encouraged to sign up for walking, swimming, cycling exercise and weight management courses and have a health check.

There was information about health and well-being initiatives such as stopping smoking, alcohol misuse and issues regarding financial, mental and physical abuse.

Manningham Healthy Living Worker, Alan Anderton, said “It was good to have new people coming along to find out what opportunities are available and how they can look after their health. Men are often more reluctant to seek help or take part in courses and activities designed to support them, so this was an easy, informal and fun way of getting information out to them. More events like these will take place in the future.”

William Shatner Designed Rivet Motorcycle to go into Production

rivet-700

When I think of William Shatner, I think of Captain Kirk and his stint on Psych. I certainly don’t think of motorcycles. Apparently, Shatner like motorcycles, at least enough to co-design a very wild looking bike with a bike company from Illinois.

Shatner has teamed up with American Wrench to design a trike called the Rivet. The name comes from the rivets on the body of the bike that apparently hold it together. The design is based on the style of a B-17 bomber and it looks like something Mad Max would ride in an apocalyptic future.

The bike won’t use a V-twin like many motorcycles out there. Rivet will get power from a gigantic supercharged V8 producing over 500hp. Yeah, 500hp in a motorcycle sounds really safe. According to American Wrench, the engine is similar to what the Cadillac CTS-V uses. The Rivet will also use some sort of twin lever steering system rather than handlebars. We don’t know how many of these will be built or what they will cost at this time. I’d wager they will be expensive machines.

Bransons Motorcycles business in Gloucstershire sets off down Thunder Road after buyout

08-April-2015

08-April-2015 9:39

in General

by The Gloucester Citizen, Gloucestershire

Bikers will enjoy a new look at one of the city’s mainstays for motorcycling enthusiasts when a new company takes over.

Bransons Motorcycles shut its doors for the last time on Saturday after 15 years of trading in Hempsted.

But on Monday it will emerge as Thunder Road, specialising in Honda motorcycles and secondhand bikes.

The Bridgend-based chain is a long established motorcycle dealership that has been going for 60 years.

It bought the store on Spinnaker Road, in Hempsted from Bransons, which also has a store in Yeovil.

Sales manager Mark Smith said it was sad to see Bransons call it a day but was positive about the business’s future with a new look.

Staff have been given new uniforms and new signs are going up at the centre this week.

In addition, the five racers the dealership sponsors are also getting new livery for their machines for their competitions.

Mark said it was good timing for the store as Bransons owners were looking to scale down its operation as the directors are keen to retire.

“It was holding us back in terms of trying to grow. There wasn’t the investment to put into it,” he said.

“It’s been a bit of a long process but we’re getting there now.”

He wants to reassure people that none of the existing staff will be shown the door and the business is in fact looking to add to its 14-strong team.

“No one has been made redundant or chosen to leave. Everyone is staying and we are looking to recruit a few more soon,” he said.

“All in all this is a very positive move and a good opportunity to reinvest a lot of money into the business.”

The store is expecting to bring in a wider range of bikes and equipment from Honda in the coming weeks.

Budge Burridge, from Whitminster, said in his 42 years of motorcycling he had bought all six of his bikes at the garage since he moved to the county.

“I always went back because they have very good customer service, no problem at all,” he said.

“I don’t see anything changing in that regard. I know a lot of people who have used Thunder Road and they have always been happy.”

White police officer charged over unarmed black man's death

A white South Carolina police officer has been charged with murder after video emerged of him shooting a black man running away from him.

State investigators arrested North Charleston police officer Michael Slager on Tuesday after viewing the mobile phone video of the shooting.

Authorities say victim Walter Lamer Scott was shot after the officer had already targeted him with a stun gun.

The US Department of Justice is set to launch an investigation.

“When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said, announcing the arrest. “When you make a bad decision, I don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.”

Police officers in the US fatally shoot and kill hundreds of people each year, but only a handful of cases result in the officer facing criminal charges.

Michael Slager

North Charleston police officer Michael Slager was arrested on Tuesday

The incident on Saturday began after Scott’s car was stopped for having a broken rear light, local media reported.

A video of the incident published by the New York Times shows a brief scuffle before Scott begins running away. The video then shows the officer firing several shots at Scott, who falls to the ground.

The Post and Courier newspaper of Charleston reported that Mr Scott had been arrested about 10 times, mostly for failing to pay child support or show up for court hearings.

Mr Scott’s brother, Anthony, told the Post and Courier that he believed his brother fled from Mr Slager because he owed child support.

Anthony Scott said that because of the video, “we have received the truth” and “through the process, justice has been served”.

Chris Stewart, a lawyer for Scott’s family, called the passer-by who recorded the video a “hero”.

The shooting occurred as heightened scrutiny is being placed on police officer shootings, particularly those that involve white officers and unarmed black suspects.

A grand jury declined to indict Ferguson, Missouri officer Darren Wilson over the fatal shooting of Michael Brown last August, leading to nationwide protests.

"Look Twice, Save a Life," This Motorcycle Season

Deb Ahl lost her husband, Jeff, in a motorcycle accident nearly three years ago. She has established a memorial foundation and outdoor campaign in his honor.

It’s a scene that still haunts Deb Ahl.

May 23rd, 2012, her husband, Jeff, was out for ride on his motorcycle. He was clipped by a car who pulled out in front of him. He was wearing a helmet, but he did not survive.

In an effort to try and find purpose in the loss that they’ve experienced, Deb and the kids have established the Jeff Ahl Memorial Foundation.

Deb adds, “So that others don’t have to go through that same experience.”

Deb says she knows her husband’s death wasn’t intentional, but she was it was 100% preventable.

She has started an outdoor campaign, called, “Look Twice. Save a Life.” Deb says by taking the extra time to look for hard-to-see riders, a life can absolutely, be spared.

She says, “I understand how easy it is to forget that. I understand how easy it is to be caught up in our lives and what’s happening and not think about that. That’s why, for us, it’s so important to just help people remember that. It’s that simple. That one thing can save someone.”

The campaign has become the theme at Jeff’s annual memorial rides, which are held every May.

Sure, it’s a message Deb says she wants us to keep in mind during May – Motorcycle Awareness Month, but she says, “As we know, folks get out on the road, on motorcycles, as soon as the weather’s nice, and they ride throughout the Summer, so we’d like to keep that message out longer, as well.”

The 3rd Annual Jeff Ahl Memorial Ride/Poker Run is coming up Saturday, May 16th. Registration, that day, takes place at Werener Cycle Works, beginning at 10 a.m.

Leslie “Cookie” Hoberman was sentenced to 24 months probation and 480 hours of community service in connection with the accident.

Hoberman plead guilty to a charge of misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide, for failing to yield the right of way.

Hoberman also lost her driver’s license for six months.
