Warmer weather means motorcycles will be back on Illinois roads. The Illinois Department of Transportation is launching a new campaign to reduce motorcycle crashes.  According to IDOT’s preliminary statistics, 118 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2014. Doug Heck, IDOT’s interim director of traffic safety, says while motorcycles account for only 3 percent of registered vehicles in Illinois, motorcyclists account for 15 percent of fatalities.

“If you consider that motorcycles only drive about two-thirds of a year, that makes that statistic even more shocking,” Heck said.

“Start Seeing Motorcycles” signs and banners will be on put on display throughout the state, which Heck says helps spread awareness that cars must share the road with riders, especially in urban areas, where most motorcycle accidents happen.

Police give report on Baltimore man's death to prosecutors early

BALTIMORE, United States: Baltimore police have completed their investigation into the death of a black man who suffered a spinal injury in police custody and turned over their findings to prosecutors – one day earlier than the department’s self-imposed deadline, the commissioner said Thursday morning.

In widespread protests Wednesday night – not only in Baltimore, but in several cities including Boston, New York and Washington – it was clear that tensions over the case are far from subsiding. The demonstrations were mostly peaceful, after turning violent earlier this week, but police made numerous arrests, including 16 in Baltimore and at least 60 in New York.

Freddie Gray’s death was the latest in a series of high-profile cases around the U.S. in which black men have died as the result of encounters with police.

Authorities carefully monitored the rally after teenagers started the violence Monday afternoon, throwing bricks and bottles at officers who had gathered near a major bus transfer point. The situation escalated from there, overwhelming police as protesters set fire to cars and buildings and raided stores.

Protests similar to those in Baltimore have erupted over the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York last year, and the death earlier this month in South Carolina of Walter Scott. Scott was fatally shot in the back by a white police officer who has since been charged with murder.

Authorities have said the Maryland state’s attorney’s office will review the new information from Baltimore police, consider charges and decide how to move forward in the death of Gray, who was stopped by police April 12. He suffered spinal injuries while in custody and died a week later.

In his announcement at a news conference, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts did not give details of the report or take questions. He said the department dedicated more than 30 detectives to working on the case and report.

“I understand the frustration; I understand the sense of urgency … that is why we have finished it a day ahead of time,” Batts said.

Batts also said police would continue to work on the case at the direction of the state’s attorney.

At the same news conference, Deputy Commissioner Kevin Davis reviewed the timeline of Gray’s time in custody and his death. Gray was arrested after he made eye contact with officers and ran. After a chase, officers pinned him down and handcuffed him. They loaded him into a van and put leg cuffs on him when officers said he became “irate” in the wagon.

Davis said Thursday that police discovered a new stop the van made with Gray in it, but they did not say what happened. Davis said the stop was found through footage from a privately owned camera.

At a later stop at the tail end of Gray’s ride, police put another man in the van. He told investigators that Gray was “was still moving around, that he was kicking and making noises” up until the van arrived at the police station. Batts said the man also said the driver did not speed, make sudden stops or “drive erratically.”

Somewhere along the way, Gray suffered a fatal spinal injury. He was eventually taken to a hospital. He died a week later.

The six officers involved were suspended with pay amid the criminal investigation

Rumors circulated Wednesday that some kind of “verdict” will be rendered when police handed their report to prosecutors.

But Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and other officials worked to dispel that notion.

“It became very clear … that people misunderstood,” Rawlings-Blake said.

Hassan Murphy, a lawyer for Gray’s family, underscored their comments, saying, “This family wants justice and they want justice that comes at the right time and not too soon.”

Said Rawlings-Blake: “Whatever time the state’s attorney’s office needs to make that determination, the family wants to get it right.”

Local Groups Promote Motorcycle Awareness Month

WILLIAMSON CO. — It’s the time of year when more motorcycles hit the roads, and for more than 30 years, officials have worked to make sure drivers keep an eye out for bikers.

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Wednesday, Black Diamond Harley Davidson hosted multiple organizations for a joint press conference. Gold Wing Road Riders Association, state police, IDOT and ABATE representatives gathered to remind us what to look for on the roads.

“Use your mirrors and purposefully look in your blind spots. Motorcycles, because we’re smaller than cars and trucks, we look like we’re further away but we’re not,” said Teri Stobbs Ricci of ABATE of Illinois.

We’re also reminded of the “Look Twice – Save a Life” campaign, encouraging drivers to look both ways twice before making a decision.

African wire-cars cruise into the Motor City

While growing up in Africa, Chido Johnson learned about the tradition of creating toys out of whatever materials were available. A favorite toy of Johnson’s was functional toy cars, created almost entirely out of discarded wire. As fate would have it, Johnson wound up moving to the Detroit to teach sculpture, and the romantic notion of bringing a folk art tradition based on cars from the other side of the world to the Motor City was not lost on him (full disclosure: I once had Johnson as a teacher).

With his group the WAWAD (the Wire-Car Auto Workers Association of Detroit), Johnson hosts workshops where he teaches people how to make their own wire-cars, and stages cruises where artists can show off their creations. We spoke with Johnson to learn more.

Metro Times: Tell us about growing up in Africa.

Chido Johnson: I was born in Zimbabwe, and raised there. I lived six years in Zambia as well. My father was an artist too, and he got exiled when he was involved in the revolution for Zimbabwe. So he got exiled to Zambia. As a kid, in Zambia, that’s where I learned how to make wire-cars. They make wire-cars out in Zimbabwe, but technically I learned it when I was living in Zambia.

MT: Were there cars in Zimbabwe and Zambia? What kind of cars?

Johnson: Yes. Not as much, especially growing up in a rural area, but there were cars. When I was younger, American cars used to come there. I think in the ’50s there were USA cars. I remember we had a word called “shambarara,” which meant “long car,” like a big car. And those were the American cars. They didn’t last because they couldn’t handle the dust.

In Zambia, it was a time — this was in the late ’70s and early ’80s — it was economically struggling. There were definitely no toys. So the older kids would make wire-cars. I made a wire-car when I was a kid, but it was horrible! But people made amazing wire-cars. So I remembered that.

I remember growing up in that time, it was hard economically, but people made things last. You’d be amazed. You’d see a radio that was barely put together because you can’t find parts. That’s the kind of connection I felt here in Detroit as well. It’s a lot of ingenuity — it’s not the quick fix. It’s not like, “What’s that piece I need?” It’s more like, “How can I make this work?”

There’s also the idea of having that cultural practice here in the USA. There’s more of a consumer culture — this is very anti-consumer. It’s more about stopping and spending time, which we don’t usually have that time, and stopping and looking at the floor and finding a weird bottle cap that makes you think of a hood ornament or hubcaps or something.

MT: How did you start the WAWAD?

Johnson: In 2009, I made a pink Cadillac — a 1967 Cadillac. I just made this car to film myself and made a video piece from Jefferson all the way to Eight Mile on Woodward. I lived in Detroit for seven years without a car. So that was actually my first car! But after I did that piece, I was like, “It would be so sweet to have a whole group of us” — a cruise. So that’s what triggered it. In 2011, I was one of the early Kresge arts fellow. I was thinking about something based on region and community because that was the first time I felt connected to a city. It made me start reflecting who my community was and what it meant.

I wound up doing workshops around Detroit focused on different communities. At the same time, I took over the old dealership on Cass Avenue and turned it into a parking lot. I had the city close one lane of Woodward Avenue in front of the DIA and we cruised. About 80 people showed up.

The piece I did for the DIA was called the “Dance for Diego,” and it was kind of reflective of the Diego Rivera mural. Imagine long ago, when people stood on Woodward Avenue and they saw that first assembly line. I mean, you knew that blew people away. You know, like, “What do I do with my donkey?” So that potentially triggered a whole cultural phenomenon, almost like a butterfly effect. And that triggered making wire-cars across the ocean. To bring that tradition back to the road, to the space that once triggered it, that’s what the poetics of that piece were about.

MT: Rivera’s have been referred to as a “secular Sistine chapel.” And you could look at toy cars as a global cargo cult.

Johnson: I was doing a workshop in Dearborn, and the youth are from Yemen. They told me they grew up with wire-cars in Yemen too. And when I did a workshop in Germany, somebody showed me a photo of some kids with wire-cars in Europe too. I know Germany had its own car industry, but in my head I imagine it having been birthed from Detroit. So bringing that practice back here seems very symbolic, and shows the global connectedness. We’re more similar than we are different.

WAWAD’s cars are on view at Detroit Boom City, an exhibition held at a pop-up gallery on the east side at 2120 Bellevue St., Detroit; dashboardcoop.org/detroitboomboom; and Popps Packing gallery at 12138 St. Aubin St., Hamtramck; 313-733-6793; poppspacking.org. At noon on Sunday, May 17, there will be a cruise as part of the Porous Border Festival starting in front of Popps Packing as part of the Porous Border Festival; porousbordersfestival.org.

Obesity crisis to escalate faster among Irish women than men

Published 06/05/2015 | 02:30

Obesity by 2030 Obesity by 2030 Dr Francis Finucane

Women will overtake men in the country’s obesity epidemic as Ireland becomes the most overweight country in Europe.

  • Go To

A health timebomb is ticking and 85pc of women will be overweight and 57pc obese by 2030, a major report predicts today.

The population is putting itself at serious risk of a range of illness and premature death, it says.

While the findings about woman presented to the European Congress on Obesity today are particularly stark, men are also losing the fight against obesity.

Around 89pc of men are likely to be overweight and 48pc moving into the danger zone of obesity by 2030.

The study, which looks at data from 53 countries, is complied by the UK Health Forum and Dr Joao Breda of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) regional office in Europe.

It says that Ireland is on course to be the most obese country in Europe in just 15 years when almost all adults will be overweight.

Already, public health experts have expressed concern that the most recent figures, dating from 2010, show 74pc of men overweight and 26pc classed as obese.

The five-year-old statistics show 57pc of women are overweight and 23pc obese – but they are on course for an even more hazardous slide in the years to come than men.

If the forecasts are played out the proportion of obese women will more than double by 2030.

A combination of over-eating of calorie-rich foods, big portions, alcohol consumption combined with a lack of exercise has already fuelled a health crisis which now risks getting even worse.

Commenting on the projections, Dr Francis Finucane, an endocrinologist and obesity expert in University Hospital Galway said: “These projections provide no reassurance and suggest things will get even worse.

“We already have a devastating problem with obesity. It could mean we will follow the United States where one in three Americans born in the year 2000 will have diabetes by the time they are 50. That is staggering. This data here suggests the problem is getting worse in Ireland as well.

“Even if things stay the same in terms of the level of fatness in Irish people, it is still going to lead to premature death.”

Although the proportion of women who are projected to be obese will be higher than men, he said: “Women are capable of storing a higher proportion of body fat than men.

“Men tend to store the fat around the stomach. At any given level of fatness, men are more likely have diabetes, cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure.”

The forecast for the UK is that 74pc of men will be overweight and 36pc obese by 2030. It is predicted 64pc of women will be overweight and one-third obese .

Other countries with projected steep rises in obesity over this period include Greece, Spain, Sweden, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

Few countries in the WHO region will be able to stabilise or decrease overweight and obesity rates. The Netherlands appears to be almost alone in tackling its national weight problem.

Fewer than half of Dutch men are predicted to be overweight, and just 8pc obese by 2030, compared with current rates of 54pc and 10pc in 2010.

When it comes to Dutch women, the proportion of overweight will remain more or less stable over the 20 years at around 43pc. However, the obesity rate in Dutch women is predicted to fall from 13pc to 9pc in the next 15 years.

Aceh women, activists slam latest sharia-based regulations

Women activists in Aceh consider the latest sharia regulations banning unmarried men and women from riding together on motorcycles and separating female and male students in high schools in North Aceh to be unnecessary.

Acehnese activist Samsidar said the separation of female students from male students was an idea that was based only on the thoughts of men.

“This is a policy that is not important for the development of education in Aceh,” said Samsidar, who is also a former member of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan).

She said such a separation was not a guarantee that education in Aceh would move in a better direction compared to other regions in Indonesia.

“It would’ve been better for the administration to issue a regulation siding with economically poor people having no access to education to be able to enjoy education,” Samsidar said.

North Aceh is one of the regencies in Aceh with a high concentration of poor families. Many families in the regency cannot afford school fees for their children.

Samsidar also said that although Aceh had long been known as a populous Muslim region, never in its history had male students been separated from female students when they were studying in class.

“Such separation only applies in Islamic boarding schools, which implement such a regulation,”
she said.

She expressed hope that the North Aceh administration would think twice before issuing the regulation as it would have a bad influence on the education of young Acehnese.

She argued that student competitiveness would lessen because of the separation. This would influence existing teaching procedures.

The North Aceh regency administration also banned unmarried couples from riding together on motorcycles, banned women from dancing in public and from straddling motorcycles.

“There are some clauses banning women from dancing in front of men because doing so could incite negative perceptions and sometimes trigger sexual arousal,” said the head of the North Aceh Legislative Council legislation agency, Tgk Fauzan Hamzah.

North Aceh Ulema Consultative Council head Abu Mustafa Ahmad Paloh Gadeng said the regulation banning unmarried couples from riding motorcycles together was urgent because relationships between young people in the regions had reached an alert level.

“We see it as important because many of the activities and relationships among our young people are deviating from Islamic teachings,” he said.

Based on Islamic teachings, he said, it was clear that unmarried couples could not sit together on motorcycles. “It is clear that sitting together on a motorbike for them is violating Islamic teaching,” he added.

Others, however, saw the qanun (bylaw) banning unmarried couples from riding on motorcycles together as a hindrance.

“There will be limitations and difficulties that women in Aceh have to deal with because of the regulation,” Acehnese university student Nurul Aminah said.

She argued that not every woman could ride a motorcycle, so sometimes needed get on a bike with a man driving.

“The regulation will restrict women’s movements and their means of expression,” Nurul said.

Other subjects regulated include raising animals such as dogs (unclean according to Islamic teaching), managing entertainment centers and controlling the movements of teenagers in the evenings.

Poloncarz, officials promote motorcycle safety, awareness

Mon, May 4th 2015 04:55 pm

A police escort prepares to guide motorcyclists participating in ABATE

A police escort prepares to guide motorcyclists participating in ABATE’s 25th annual safety and awareness ride. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and Saturday’s rally downtown emphasized the need for all drivers to be vigilant and prepared to share the road with motorcycles.

Kick off new riding season with ABATE’s annual safety and awareness ride

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined on the steps of the Edward A. Rath county office building Saturday by Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs, Erie County Commissioner of Central Police Services John Glascott, elected officials, community members and officials from the American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (“ABATE”) of NY Buffalo-Erie Chapter to start the motorcycle season with a call for increased safety and awareness. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, with increased ridership and more bikes on the road.

“More motorcycles are on the road each year, and more drivers in general. It’s always a good idea to practice good driving skills, especially as warm weather approaches, and be aware of road conditions and the other drivers sharing the road,” Poloncarz said. “I urge all motorists to be vigilant and on the lookout for smaller vehicles. If everyone does so, it will be a safer driving season for all.”

ABATE has 25 chapters across New York dedicated to promoting motorcycle safety, awareness and education. The organization also pursues fair treatment for all motorcyclists, monitors proposed motorcycle-impacting legislation, and works for freedom of choice regarding safety equipment. ABATE advocates for individuals’ “Right to Ride” while striving to keep members educated on all issues affecting motorcyclists.

“There are currently over 21,000 registered motorcycles in Erie County, along with thousands of other riders who travel our roads seasonally,” Jacobs said. “In an era of distracted driving, motorists must always be aware of their vehicle’s blind spots and alert to the presence of motorcycles so we can safely share the road together.”

Glascott said, “As a former accident investigator, one of the things I learned was that, in the event of an accident involving a motorcycle, the motorcyclist usually loses. It is incumbent on those of us sharing the highways with our friends driving their bikes to be aware of their presence at all times, and be extra cautious while driving.”

Mad Men Recap: Sister Strife

Ugh, moving. Am I right?

First there’s the making sure all of your stuff gets boxed up and relocated to the proper destination. Then there’s the unpacking and realizing that you’ve accidentally opened a crate of ennui, a realization that makes it tough to continue doing the work you’ve done for years, so pointless does the endeavor seem when the great, wide world is out there for the taking and/or a sad waitress might need saving.

Finally, there’s the removing the bubble wrap from the pesky awareness that it’s a man’s, man’s, man’s world — and it will be for the foreseeable future.

OK, maybe these moving woes are specific to Mad Men, which physically relocates Sterling Cooper & Partners from its home office to the McCann Erickson mothership in this week’s episode. But can’t you relate? Transitions can be hard for all of us (and, as Don and Joan find, very, very hard for some of us), and there’s always a vase chipped or a table nicked or a passion marginalized, mocked, threatened and quietly ushered out. (Sigh. Poor Joanie.)

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s review what happens in “Lost Horizon.”

Upon moving into her new digs at McCann Erickson, she’s paired with Dennis (AKA one of the idiots who made her utter, “I want to burn this place down” during the Topaz nylon discussion a few episodes back). When he alienates the Avon rep during a phone call, Joan asks Ferg for some assistance. So Ferg takes Dennis off the account — and puts himself in. Dennis “has a wife and three children. He’s not going to work for a girl. What’s he gonna say? ‘She’s my boss?’” Ferg scoffs. I think the grossest part of this whole conversation is the way he acts like he’s doing Joan a favor by putting forth a vision of their working relationship, which will involve weekends away and “a good time.” I physically cringe as Ferg takes Joan’s hand between both of his sweaty meat shovels and promises “From now on, no one comes between me and your business.”

Richard tells Joan there are two ways to solve a business problem: lawyers or intimidation. (He uses a lot more words, but that’s the drift.) But at her meeting with McCann boss Jim Hobart, she winds up using a blend of both. Hobart quickly drops his good-guy act to make it clear that she’s a no one at the new firm, despite her SC&P partnership, and if she doesn’t find a way to get along in the new regime, “you’ll be getting a letter from our lawyer.”

“I wonder how many women here would like to speak with a lawyer,” Joan asks pointedly, pushing the old man into near apoplexy. (Side note: Seriously, he turns scarlet. It’s amazing to watch.) He offers her 50 cents on the dollar for her shares if it means “never to see your face again.” She name-checks Betty Friedan, the ACLU and the recent Women’s Strike for Equality before stalking out of his office. Place? BURNED DOWN.

The scene is so powerful, and Joan’s fuse has been smoking for so long, that the confrontation feels cathartic. Now, you think, our Joan is going to win over all those oafs. Nope. Roger comes to her office the next day to urge her to take the buyout. “You started something that could leave you with nothing,” he says. I honestly think Rog thinks he’s looking out for her best interests — and an earlier scene proves once again how little sentimentality he has about business — but it’s a terrible thing to hear someone you love(d) argue for the other side, especially when it’s a side history will prove wrong. She tears up, grabs a photo of Kevin and her Rolodex from her desk, and leaves. “Tell him he has a deal,” she says on the way out. Joan Harris, ladies and gentlemen. Doing the soul-crushingly smart thing since 1960.

LATER! | Earlier in the episode, Jim welcomes Don to the building and talks up some of the big accounts he’ll have under his control. Hobart waited 10 years to have Draper on his team, he notes, saying, “You’re my white whale.” I’m not sure Moby would be the word I would put in front of Dick to describe Don, but OK. We’ll go with it.

Everything is peachy — Meredith is decorating Don’s apartment, there are roast beef sandwiches for a client meeting — until Don sits down in a meeting for Miller beer and suddenly seems completely out of his element. Maybe it’s that the research guy presenting is giving a Draper-caliber pitch. (You know, the one that goes, “Warm feeling, warm feeling, honeyed voice, wry smile, dash o’ misogyny, toothless joke, beat for… emotion?”) Maybe it’s that there are far more people in the room than Don is used to working with. But he gazes out the window at a plane in the sky, then gets up and leaves. The only person to notice is Ted, who looks happy.

INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN | Don makes a stop to see Sally, but she’s already left for school. So he gives Betty a shoulder rub (it’s a little weird that it’s not weird, right?) and then drives to Racine, Wisc. Just like that. Along the way, he hallucinates Bert (hi Bert!) sitting in the passenger’s seat, telling him what a stupid idea it is to try to find downer diner waitress Diana in her home state. WHEN YOUR SYPHILIS TALKS, DON, LISTEN.

He winds up at Diana’s house, where he pretends she won a new fridge full of Miller beer. But Diana’s ex’s new wife (played by Sarah Jane Morris, Brothers and Sisters) is the only woman there, and when Diana’s old hubby comes home, he’s ripped to find Don in the living room. The husband (played by MacKenzie Astin, The Facts of Life) follows Draper to his car. “You think you’re the first one who came lookin’ for her?” the husband asks, prompting me to ask, “Good God there are more people who find Frowny McAlleySex alluring?”

So Don keeps driving, eventually picking up a hitchhiker bound for St. Paul. Look for the hippie drifter’s story to dominate the next episode.

ON A ROLL | The episode’s most fun moments, by far, come when Roger and Peggy — both hanging at SC&P’s old offices for different reasons — drink together. She notes that it’s the most attention he’s paid her since she’s worked at the firm, and it’s certainly the longest scene I can recall Elisabeth Moss and John Slattery ever sharing. They talk about how being at McCann will be a challenge for both of them, and how it’ll be good, though they probably wouldn’t have undertaken the change without a push. He gives her a print from Bert’s office — “It’s an octopus pleasuring a lady,” which she argues she can never hang in her new space because it’ll make men feel uncomfortable (sigh) — and somehow they end the evening with him playing an organ and her doing laps around the office on rollerskates. The visual is sublime.

The next morning, Peggy rolls into McCann Erickson, which finally has an office free for her, wearing sunglasses, smoking a cigarette and toting the octoprinty under her arm.

Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sound off in the comments!
