Why Men's Clothes Are Cheaper Than Women's Clothes

saint-laurent-spring-2016-menswear.jpg

If you’ve ever shopped for a woman and thought the prices seemed crazier than normal, you’re not just having a cheap moment. Chances are, the clothes are actually more expensive than what you’re used to. Higher prices in the women’s section can sometimes be chalked up to the materials used and the workmanship that goes into the clothing, but there are other factors that could be playing a part, too—particularly if you’re eyeing the price tag of a simple sweater and not, say, an elaborate gown.

This week The Business of Fashion looked at pricing discrepancies in luxury brands and found that Saint Laurent, Valentino, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, and Balmain all sell identical items for different prices depending on gender. A Saint Laurent striped sweater, for example, sells for $240 less in the men’s section than the women’s section. In cases like this, when there’s no significant difference in the craftsmanship and materials used to create the women’s version of the garment, there are really two things that could be happening.

One, brands could be raising prices in order to offset certain risks and hidden costs associated with selling to women. Buying more sizes or colors for women, for example, might inspire the brand to raise the price on something. Women’s manufactured goods are also subject to higher tariff rates in the US and EU—a controversial issue itself—which may cause retailers to charge more at checkout.

How Your Dad Inspired Hip-Hop’s Latest Style Trend

The other thing that could be happening is that brands could simply be taking advantage of, as BOF puts it, “the fact that women shop more and are willing to pay more for fashion than men”. Men are thought to approach buying clothes with more pragmatism, which prevents retailers from hiking up prices without reason. One major exception to this stigma is the sneaker market, where marketers play all kinds of pricing and availability games with men knowing how emotional the connection is for them.

So there’s the catch. The more you care about your clothes, the more difficult it’ll become to navigate the market. Our advice: Educate yourself on the markers of quality (we can help with that) and, at least for now, buy your girlfriend’s gifts in the men’s department.

Union members show off Mustangs in celebration of Ford cars and workers

CLAYCOMO, Mo. — Americans investing in American cars, that’s what the United Auto Workers Local 249 is pushing. To celebrate Ford made cars, some members of the union came together to not only admire decked out Mustangs, but to honor lives lost at the Ford plant.

The rally drivers hoped to not only demonstrate the beauty of an American made-car, but also to celebrate those who’ve dedicated their lives working at the Ford Motor Company plant in Claycomo.

“My dad worked at this plant and my brothers did, so I always wanted to work at Ford Motor Company,” said Garron Hayes with Local 249.

Hayes has worked at the Ford plant for more than a year and is doing so to continue a legacy. His dad retired after 32 years of service.

“He worked here so hard to provide something for his family,” he said.

Gary Smith was a GM man before fully committing to Ford 25 years ago. Now he drives this 2003 Mustang Terminator Cobra with 600 horsepower.

He encourages more Americans to invest in an American family like Ford.

“You take care of home first,” he said.

More than 40 drivers came out to ride their Mustang to the Kansas Speedway. They hope other drivers will be inspired by the impressive line-up.

The 6 Essential Wonder Woman Comic Books to Read

The reviews are in, and it appears Wonder Woman is one of the most promising aspects of the continued DC cinematic universe, which is set up in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman. Wonder Woman’s first solo film, set for a June 2017 release, has already begun its promotional push with the release of its first promotional image. Figuring out exactly who these women are, and what to expect from a Wonder Woman film, requires returning to her long history of comic book appearances. We’ve compiled the high (and low) points for you below, in a handy guide to over 70 years of comic book adventures.

Wonder Woman’s first appearance

Wonder Woman first appeared in comic books in December 1941, as a minor character in All-Star Comics, issue 8. Right out the gate, Wonder Woman’s shtick was a direct comment on men. The first sentence ever published on her character was “At last, in a world torn by the hatreds and wars of men, appears a woman to whom the problems and feats of men are mere child’s play.” Subsequent panels revealed Wonder Woman’s superhuman strength and her role on Paradise Island as the only daughter to the queen, Hippolyte.

Wonder Woman saves a man, despite having never seen one before, and falls in love with him while he lies prone in a hospital. Alarmed, Hippolyte tells Wonder Woman a long story about how men enslaved women for centuries, before Hippolyte and her friends escaped by sea to Paradise Island. The story, given that it was written and published in the early ‘40s, is markedly interesting for its straight-forward reading of feminism, which hangs its hat on overthrowing the oppressive patriarchy and putting women in masculine-typical societal roles. It’s also fun to note that many of the characters on Paradise Island, including the queen and doctor, are dressed in sexy clothing. Hippolyte doesn’t look like a Queen, so much as she resembles a young co-ed wearing a vinyl “sexy royal” costume to a frat party. She even has cone breasts!

Now that the men are gone, we are free to wear our restrictive metal bras and strange S&M medical uniforms!

Now that the men are gone, we are free to wear our restrictive metal bras and strange S&M medical uniforms!

It’s easy to mock rudimentary gender politics in fiction, but Wonder Woman’s debut was, at the time, a huge step forward for diversity in superhero stories. The heroes who came before her were men, but were also chugging along in storylines meant to emulate a Christian definition of male martyrdom. Before Wonder Woman, the only conceivable way to live life with superheroes was to dedicate one’s every move to justice and the American way. Wonder Woman was the first superhero to enter contemporary society and be appalled at the way things were.

Wonder Woman appeared in a follow up issue of Sensation Comics in 1942, and in that same year, her very first solo comic book hit stands.

Wonder Woman #1

As evidence from her comic’s 1942 cover, Wonder Woman has been an equestrian since day one. That’s another great little easter egg from Batman v Superman, which featured Diana on horseback as a nod to her long history.

In her first solo issue, Wonder Woman takes Steve Trevor, the injured dude from All Star Comics, back to the United States and drops him off at the hospital. Comically, she accidentally leaves behind a bit of parchment that explains her backstory. When a bystander reads the historical parchment (which turns out to be super long), we get Diana’s full backstory. It’s the same story Hippolyta told her daughter in All Star Comics, but it’s rendered with more emotional detail.

Diana, like Marvel’s Thor and his Norse figures, is very aware of the Greek gods and the literal power they have on earth. After Mars wills men on earth to enslave women, Aphrodite helps a large number of women escape to an island by showing Hippolyte the way. After landing on Paradise Island, Hippolyte crafts herself a daughter out of clay, and Aphrodite breathes life into it, and the subsequent little girl who appears grows up to be Wonder Woman. Notable here is that Wonder Woman doesn’t have a father. Diana, unlike Superman, maintains all of her powers — strength, speed, beauty, wisdom — no matter where she is.

The comic then returns to the present, and we see Diana learning from Steve Trevor that the Axis powers — Germany, Italy and Japan — threaten to consume the world. Aphrodite tells Diana’s mother that “Man’s World”, as the Amazons have come to call it, will be lost entirely unless one of the female champions returns to help the Allies. Diana volunteers, gets her Lasso of Truth from her mother, and dons the red, white and blue of the United States in order to make her WWII alignment crystal clear.

Other notable details from Wonder Woman’s debut volume include: Diana’s “mental radio” which is an old-fashioned radio Diana attaches to her head with a metal ring and Diana’s strong suspicion of both Germans and the Japanese.

Wonder Woman’s very first Justice Society role

DC debuted the first-ever superhero team in 1942 with the Justice Society of America, of which Wonder Woman was an early member. Though she was arguably just as strong as the other, male, members of the society, Diana accepted her assigned role as the team’s secretary. On several occasions, Diana hung back from the action, admitting that she was only an “honorary” member and therefore not really prepared for actual combat.

In 1948, Wonder Woman, having become a full member of the Society, welcomed the team’s second female member, a badly drawn Black Canary. When The Justice Society of America’s comics folded in 1951, Wonder Woman was the only character whose solo comics survived the cancellation. She finished out what comic nerds call The Golden Age (late 1930s to early 1950s) defeating America’s heroes and preaching a non-violent approach to warfare.

The Silver and Bronze Age

In the late 1950s, Wonder Woman’s origin story was rewritten. Unprompted by “Man’s World” this time, Diana trained as a superhero among her own (female) people, readying herself for a Hunger-Games style showdown conducted in the name of Pallias-Athena. Since her own mother was appointed as the judge of these proceedings, Diana suggested all the Amazons wear masks and costumes made to look like hers.

Diana wins, obviously, and her mother gives her a penny and tells her she will only win the contest if she can turn that penny into a million dollars, in twenty four hours, so that money can be donated to a children’s charity. (Yep.)

Steve Trevor appears again, Wonder Woman saves him, and the two travel to Minneapolis–St. Paul, for some reason. After a series of ridiculous stunts involving animals and destroying children’s beach parties, Diana realizes she can use her super strength to mold her single penny into an entire bridge connecting the Twin Cities. The mayor gives her a check for a million dollars as a thank you, and she wins her title back home.

In Wonder Woman comics published in the 1960s, Diana gives up her super powers in order to live among normal humans in “Man’s World,” and she trains in martial arts and espionage. In the 1970s, Wonder Woman comics saw the central character join the The Justice League of America and return to a WWII era time period.

Contemporary comics

Wonder Woman’s comics, before the revamping DC calls its “New 52” collection, were marked by otherworldly sequences involving portals, alternate dimensions and angry gods.

She picked up a protege in Wonder Girl, and her imagery became increasingly sexual. Gone were the original’s comics intent to market themselves to young girls; Diana was now rendered with the male comic collector’s gaze in mind, and in some cases appeared practically naked.

When she wasn’t being posed in suggestive panels as eye candy, she was written as a maternal figure of DC’s growing pantheon of young, angry superheroes. During the late 90s and early 2000s, DC maintained a focus on expanding its universe beyond its central heroes, hoping to snag every possible reader with a hero who looked, acted and thought like them. Wonder Woman remained a staple, but she was often paired with young lookalikes or fighting female heroes without commenting on what the supermen were up to.

New 52, Wonder Woman as she stands now

In September 2011, DC revamped every single one of its primary characters, including Wonder Woman. No longer a child made out of clay and the intention of two women, Diana was born to Hippolyta and Zeus. Instead of being characterized as virtuous, post-2011 Wonder Woman was definitively rebellious, and earned a new nickname: The Goddess of War.

This new storyline opened Wonder Woman’s life up to half-siblings, including Lennox Sandsmark, eventual father to Wonder Woman’s niece, Wonder Girl. Wonder Woman’s first villain in her new series was Zeus’ eldest son by Hera, his lawful wife.

Wonder Woman’s storylines experienced a lot of tumultuous rearranging in regards to sex, lineage and violence. Rather than a blessed daughter of a goddess, Diana was now the bastard daughter of the OG god, Zeus, and many characters from her home-world resented her. She also learned of corruption in her female society, and the dark underbelly of how Paradise Island continued existing: as it turned out, the Amazons were raping and killing male soldiers, drowning any sons they had through this process and celebrating their daughters.

In 2013, DC comics introduced Diana’s daughter, Fury, in an alternate dimension the publisher calls “Earth 2”.

How all of this will affect the film

We know from early marketing information that Wonder Woman’s first live action feature film will include her relationship with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), and that conflicts will arise between the Amazons, played by Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright, and between Diana herself (Gal Gadot) and Ares, who has yet to be cast.

Time period will also be a crucial choice for Warner Bros, who featured Wonder Woman in their present-era Batman v Superman film, although she’s typically embedded into WWII-era politics in her comic books. CinemaBlend reported a year ago that Diana’s origin film was to be set in the 1920s, but they reversed their position five months ago, stating the film was likely to include WWI-era flashbacks, but would ultimately tie in to BvS’s timeline.

No matter where Diana happens to be in time, it’s likely her core values, defined in the vast majority of her comics as empathy, wisdom and truth, will prevail. She’s not quite the curmudgeon that Batman has become, but she certainly has a more nuanced and skeptical view of humanity than Superman.

The 6 Essential Wonder Woman Comic Books to Read

Sigma 7: The Six Mercury Orbits of Walter M. Schirra, Jr. (Springer Praxis Books)

Colin Burgess offers a comprehensive yet personal look at the 1962 orbital mission of Wally Schirra aboard the spacecraft Sigma 7, the first book about this popular pioneering astronaut which explores his entire life and accomplishments. This continues the Pioneers in Early Spaceflight series, the volumes of which form an excellent record of Project Mercury’s pioneering early phase of the Space Age.

Schirra’s pre-NASA life is examined, as well as his training as a NASA astronaut and for his Mercury MA-8 flight. The 6-orbit flight of Sigma 7 is fully covered from its origins through to the spacecraft’s safe recovery from the ocean after a highly successful Mercury mission. Schirra’s participation on the Gemini 6 and Apollo 7 missions is also told, but in brief, and the book also relates his post-NASA life and activities through to his passing in 2007. The Mercury Seven occupy a unique spot in the history of human spaceflight, and Schirra is at last given his due as one of the contributing astronauts in this painstakingly researched book.

John Abraham: Motorcycles are used as props in films these days

John Abraham puts his money where his heart is – he is planning a football-centric film and owns an Indian Super League football club too. Bikes are also close to his heart, and the actor is slightly discontented with the way motorcycles are used in films these days.

At a recent press conference in the capital, he told us, “They are used as props these days – log nachtey hain uske aage, films mein, award functions mein. I want motorcycles to be used with a bit more credibility, and maybe I could make a film on them sometimes,” he says. In town to promote his film Rocky Handsome, John said that although he enjoys acting in all kinds of films, he can’t make them as a producer. “I enjoy films like Welcome Back and can act in them, but as a producer, my sensibilities direct me towards producing films like ‘Madras Cafe,’ ‘Vicky Donor’ and ‘Rocky Handsome’.”

Corporates sell soaps, can’t think creatively

John’s latest production has no corporate backing, and the actor-producer says that it was a deliberate move to keep them out of the film. “This film is our baby, and I think we have been able to execute almost all the decisions we had taken,” John said as the film’s director, Nishikant Kamat, who was also there, nodded in agreement. “Corporates sell soaps, they can’t think creatively. The distributor response to this film is good. This is one of my safest films as a producer. Humein pata hai yeh film kahan chalegi, kaise chalegi,” John added.

Can’t put five songs in a Korean film

Rocky Handsome is adapted from the South Korean film The Man From Nowhere. Nishikant, who has earlier made Force with John, said that he had to modify the story to suit Indian sensibilities because a Korean film can’t be remade in India. “You can’t put five songs in a Korean film. Plus, Indian sensibilities are very different, so you have to adapt the story accordingly,” he reasoned. Nishikant also happens to play the antagonist in this film, and shares that acting and directing in the same film can be a very confusing task. “I am never going to do the two things together again,” he said at the press conference.

Akshay and I came from the same place – nowhere

John has been quite vocal about his equation with Akshay Kumar. He says he can relate to the latter more because he’s come up from being a nobody to a somebody in Bollywood without any ‘connections’. “Both of us came from nowhere – I can relate to that. Akshay and I genuinely get along. I admire his lifestyle and discipline,” says John.

The rise of the plus-size male model

The world

The world’s first “brawny” male model, Zach Miko. Photo: BadRhino

Standing at 6’6″ with a 40-inch waist, Zach Miko isn’t your average male model. This certified hunk is the first person to be signed to IMG’s newly launched ‘Brawn’ division for men.

With a build that better reflects the average male waistline – which just happens to be 39-inches in Australia – this isn’t the first gig for 26-year-old Miko. The actor and comedian last year attracted attention when he fronted a campaign for Target’s ‘Big and Tall’ range.

There are already modelling agencies dedicated to larger and average-bodied female models, but there hasn’t been a male equivalent – until now.

While women such as Robyn Lawley, Tess Holliday, Candice Huffine and Ashley Graham conquer catwalks, campaigns and covers, even spearheading social media movements such as #DropThePlus, larger-than-average men have long been sidelined by the industry. Women have benefited from feminist demands for more diverse representation in fashion; but men are increasingly facing similar body image concerns.

Though niche agencies have represented “plus-size” male models before, this marks the first time one of the world’s foremost modelling agencies has got in on the game.

Speaking to WWD, IMG’s president Ivan Bart explained the intentions behind the new division: “[S]ize diversity is something that’s relevant and continues to be on everybody’s mind. We have to extend the conversation for men.”

In signing onto the books, Miko wants to expand the range of editorial body types. He wants others to see his image and visualise themselves in his shoes, feeling more confident with their body shape and size as a result. Could it open the door for a new wave of bigger-bodied talent, beyond the realm of Carlton Draught and Doritos ads that play in-between sporting events? We can only hope so.

Miko’s part of a slow-growing body positive movement changing up the world of men’s fashion – and he certainly stands out in a sea of washboard abs and slender frames.

Last year, it was announced that Instagram powerhouse The Fat Jew (AKA Josh Ostrovsky) would be making his foray into fashion by signing with modelling agency One Management. “I just want to inspire people of my size and my gender to be comfortable in their own skin because it’s OK to have a mediocre body and very, very high cholesterol, as long as you look great doing it,” he said.

We held out hope when he scored a show spot at New York Fashion Week, but rather than making any real and impactful statement about size diversity, it quickly descended into parody about ‘dadbods’. We saw middle-aged men wearing BBQ aprons, turtleneck jumpers and bargain-bin business suits, storming down a turf-covered catwalk while a prog rock soundtrack played overhead. These men didn’t appear to care about how they looked any more.

This is a common misconception. The lack of plus-size models corresponds with the lack of plus-size clothing options. As Miko told WWD, “I still have a very hard time walking into any physical brick-and-mortar store and finding anything that fits. I don’t think designers feel like big guys want to look good.” Though the market is there, the industry for sartorially discerning heavier gents is yet to be created.

Though Miko’s growing portfolio is definitely progressing, men’s fashion continues to peddle a very narrow view of what it means to be beautiful, trendy and desirable. As it stands, male models typically come in two sizes: the toned, gym-honed physiques of men like Brad Kroenig, Tyson Beckford and David Gandy or the hollow-cheeked, prepubescent look promoted by Saint Laurent’s runway boys.

The conversation surrounding body positivity has long focused on women, but issues of body acceptance and beauty standards are just as real and relevant for men. That bigger guys can be fashionable is no surprise to us, so why has it taken the industry so long to catch on?

The rise of the plus-size male model

Ben Melzer Talks Visibility, Being The First Out Trans Man To Cover Men's Health

Welcome to Guys, Guys, Guys month on Papermag.com — an online companion to our Girls, Girls, Girls issue on stands now. Join us in the coming days as we reflect on the many facets of modern masculinity, queer culture, the subversion of traditional male norms and what it truly means to be a dude in 2016.

Earlier this year, German model Ben Melzer made headlines as a finalist for Men’s Health Germany’s “Ultimate Guy” cover star contest — but for more than just his biceps, as his win made him the first out trans man on a European men’s fitness magazine cover. And while he may have not made the wide-distribution cover, Melzer did join the other finalists on a special collector’s edition that stirred an international conversation about trans visibility — and looked damn good doing it.

The issue, which is on European stands now, also gave us a good reason to chat with Melzer while he was recently in New York about everything from his Calvin Klein aspirations to inspiring others. Read the full Q&A below to learn about navigating traditional ideas of quote-unquote masculinity, his journey to the cover, as well as what exactly his win means for trans men everywhere.

So I guess the place we should probably start is your journey and the lead-up to Men’s Health. Tell me a little about growing up.

I realized that I was different…when I was three or four years old. I didn’t know what it was, I was just acting different — not like the other female kids, the girls. At the age of 16, I asked myself, “Is this how it feels when you’re lesbian,” because I was attracted to girls — but always to straight girls. And I could easily answer that question that I was not a lesbian. I felt totally straight, like a straight guy — which was weird for me, because I had a female body. I always had short hair, and I was wearing boy stuff, and I acted like a boy, but I had this female body I didn’t feel comfortable in.

So what was your first exposure to the concept of being transgender?

I had no idea until I was 18 years old. When I was 18, I saw an interview on TV about being transgender, and after every point I could make a check — like yes, that’s me. I finally had my answer and I knew what was [going on] with me, because I felt like I was the only one in the world feeling that way. It was totally weird…I told my mom and my dad at this point, but I wasn’t strong enough [to go forward]. We did some research and saw all of the photos of the surgery, and it scared me. I cared too much about what the people around me would say — so I waited another 5 years. But then I was injured, so [I wasn’t able to work out for a while] and sport for me was a way to get rid of the pressure in my head — thinking about the transition and things. Then I saw another TV interview about being transgender — I was 23 at this point, and that was my point of no return. I wasn’t able to [live how I was living] anymore, and I didn’t care anymore. I didn’t care what people would say. I was like “This is me, and I finally want to go this way. I really want to live my life, and I’m going to be a cool guy. And all the girls, all the guys laughing at me now, they’ll want to be friends with me when I’m finished with all that.” That’s what I told myself, so I told my parents again. My mother — she’s my biggest fan; she was supportive from day one. My father was a bit difficult, because I wasn’t his little girl [anymore]. I looked like a boy all the time, was acting like a boy, and he was scared, which was different [from] my mother. The psychologist needed to tell him that it wasn’t just a phase. But after the psychologist said “it’s real,” he was supportive too.

So it took an expert opinion?

Yeah. He needed it. He was scared, also.

So why fitness modeling? What got you started?

Well I don’t want to call myself a fitness model, I would rather say model, but that was the start for me. I always looked up to men on the cover, no matter if it’s a fitness model or a fashion model — I just thought that I should be on the cover. So I did some research on Google, and I found the Men’s Health magazine cover contest. And then I was like “Okay, think about it, think about it and then just do it!” Thinking about it was important for me, because it was very clear that not everybody would like me and that they wouldn’t all send me positive vibes. [But] I decided to do it because I was entirely at peace with it, like I didn’t care what people would say. It’s important for me that the people around me, the people I know, like me. What they say can hurt me, but not what somebody sitting behind their computer, a thousand miles away says…I don’t care about that.

Speaking of the competition, when it comes to fitness modeling, a lot of people tend to think of it as this hyper-masculine, ego-centric sort of thing. What were the other models like?

[When the competition first started I] was like, “Wow, there are some machines in the room.” But it didn’t feel like a competition, we were all very nice to each other, and it was a very, very cool atmosphere. Some of them had no idea about my past — that I’m a trans guy. Some knew, but when they saw me, they didn’t believe it — and they were very curious, but in a respectful way. They asked me a lot of things, and I guess it was easy for them and easy for everyone to handle, because I’m very open. You can ask me almost anything. I don’t get mad about somebody asking things because I think it’s important to educate, and to open up their minds. To make transgender, like, normal — to have them know that it wasn’t a choice.

Yeah, visibility is essential. Was it intimidating when you first met the other contestants of the competition?

I felt a little weird. I was scared, just a bit, but I never showed it. [I was nervous] because…they look so good! Like “Oh my god, it isn’t even possible for me to get the cover”…I am just like a normal guy. I’m always like “Oh, he was bigger biceps, and he has bigger pecs,” that was the way that I was thinking. But they were all so nice to me.

You’re pretty active on social media. Has it also been pretty supportive? Have you gotten any stories of people reaching out and being like “you’ve helped me?”

Yes, a lot. [One guy] told me that at the age of 50, “You are the reason I started my transition. Thank you for that.” That really touched my heart. I keep those messages, and I want to print them all one day and put them into a book just for me. Also, not only people with the same story, but also parents — they send me messages like “What you give us now, no doctor can give us the feeling that you give us.” They saw me on TV or heard me on the radio when I said “everybody is looking for a hero. If I can be the hero for just a little kid then it would be amazing, but in the end you just need to look in the mirror because the hero is standing right in front of you,” because nobody will help you. A mother sent me a message that said “I showed my son his little hero today, thank you.” I really feel this, you know?

Have you had to put some things on the back burner to appease long-ingrained societal ideas of masculinity?

[My love of fashion.] Some people ask “Is that the little girl in you, that you love fashion?” I’m very vain! I’m vain when I take care of myself. I don’t go out without looking in the mirror. But just because of my past, people are like “Is that the little girl in you?” But I think that it has nothing to do with gender or sexuality — I’m just shoe-addicted. I love shoes, I really love shoes.

You’re a sneakerhead?

Oh, totally. I love glasses, and bags. I love bags. I’m so into fashion, and I live for that. But I’m not into math, you know? I fuckin’ hate it. We all have something we’re addicted to, and for me it’s fashion and fitness, and lifestyle. That’s what I love.

So are you trying to transition more into fashion modeling?

Yeah, that’s what I would love to do. My future, my life goal, would to be a Calvin Klein commercial. Just wearing underwear, because you need to accept your body. And you need to transport a message — and you can’t transport that message if you don’t feel comfortable. You have nothing but your skin, and this underwear. I want to open doors for others, so they don’t have to live in stealth. [Let people know] they’re able to achieve their dreams if they go after them. I did a post on Instagram saying “We all have [style], and a lot of us have really nice style and we don’t need to hide that just because of our past and because of our story.” Some people, they hide, and they don’t want others to see them. Like when you wear special clothes and you look a bit different from others, people will look at you. I don’t care…I mean look at me, I feel good! And I’m the [person] that I want to be today.

Do you have anything you’d like to add? Something to tell other people beginning their own transitions?

I just want to say to others, be patient. Also with the people around you…Because when I started my transition, I always got mad when my mother said something wrong. Like “she.” But I forgot about that it’s not easy for parents. They’re used to calling you “she” and by your female name — and then you want them to switch like this [ snaps]. It’s not possible, so be patient. And it’ll get better.

Honda Civic hatchback debuts with help from Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas

NEW YORK—A sheet flew off the all-new Honda Civic hatchback as it gleamed under the hot lights during a press conference on a glitzy stage near the New York International Auto Show on Tuesday.

Inside the brick-lined walls of a hip Hell’s Kitchen venue, a dozen Millennials who scored invitations to the event did not appear enthused at the shiny sheet metal.

“I don’t even drive,” one said to her friend.

The Millennials clutched their smartphones, hands on hips — the ultimate sign of disinterest in a culture where barely anything exists if it didn’t happen on social media.

But when celebrity artists Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas hit the stage a few minutes later to promote their upcoming Honda concert tour, the Millennials got giddy — and the tweets, snaps and texts started flying.

Therein lies the problem for the auto industry. Getting Millennials interested in new cars is a feat of devilish proportions for an industry accustomed to selling cars based on horsepower, torque and fuel economy.

To cope with the shift, Honda let Lovato design her own version of the Civic sedan, which won the 2016 North American Car of the Year award in January. It came out with a special pinkish hue base, tapered with black matte flames on the sides.

“I wanted it to look so fast that it looked like it was peeling away the black,” she said.

As she went to autograph the special edition Civic, fans stood on their toes to catch every moment.

As it turns out, Millennials will buzz about a special appearance from a couple celebrities, but the bigger question is whether they’ll buzz about cars.

The industry has a lot of work to do. The percentage of people aged 20 to 24 with a driver’s license hit an all-time low in 2014 at 76.7%, down from 91.8% in 1983, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

What’s more, cars are struggling due to low gasoline prices. Small car sales fell 17% in 2015, according to J.D. Power.

The Civic hatchback made its North American debut Tuesday, following its global debut last month at the Geneva auto show. It’s the first five-door hatchback Civic in the North American market, boasting sporty lines. The five-door 2017 Civic hatchback joins the coupe and sedan versions and will hit showrooms later in 2016, developed by Honda engineers in Japan and Europe.

In one bit of news, Honda announced that it would make a six-speed manual transmission available on all turbocharged versions of the Civic.

“We said this would be our sportiest Civic ever and we meant it,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda brand in the U.S.

STK1000 Champion team unveils this year’s bikes at Misano

Just two weeks ahead of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup for 2016, the team which won last year’s title has revealed its new-look Aprilia RSV4 RF motorcycles at Misano.

Last year, the Nuova M2 Racing squad wrapped up the crown with Lorenzo Savadori, who has since moved on to the premier WorldSBK tier. His former team-mate Kevin Calia is now joined by Roberto Tamburini – the rider who pushed Savadori to the title, taking the challenge to the last race at Magny-Cours, riding a BMW last year.

Last weekend’s presentation was staged at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, where a test has been taking place for the Italian CIV championship.

The opening race for STK1000 in 2016 will take place at MotorLand Aragon on the afternoon of Sunday 3 April, shortly after World Superbike Race 2.

Ducati XDiavel, Multistrada 1200 Enduro prices leaked ahead of India launch; bookings open

Ducati XDiavel
Ducati XDiavelducatipress.com

Italian sports motorcycle brand Ducati officially entered to India in 2015. India being relatively new market does not stop Ducati to bring international models to the country soon after their global unveiling. The latest model coming to India is the XDiavel and the Multistrada 1200 Enduro, both unveiled at the EIMCA show in Milan last November.

A report in Zigwheels confirms both motorcycles will be launched in the country mid-2016 and the bookings are already open for a down payment of Rs one lakh. The report also claims the XDiavel will be priced at around Rs 16.3 lakh, while the Multistrada 1200 Enduro will command a tag of close to Rs 18.3 lakh. Both motorcycles will be brought to India as CBU units from Ducati’s Thailand plant. The deliveries are expected to begin from August this year.

Talking about the motorcycle, the XDiavel is Ducati’s take on modern cruiser motorcycle. Ducati claims the XDiavel brings together two worlds: the cruiser attributes of low speeds, relaxed riding and long journeys and the Ducati’s Italian style, engineering and performance. The XDiavel features belt-drive and powered by a Testastretta DVT 1262cc, V-twin engine that makes 156hp at 9,500rpm and 129Nm maximum torque at 5000rpm. The engine is mated to six-speed transmission with a slipper clutch. The motorcycle weighs 220kg and comes with a wheelbase of 1615mm.

On the other hand, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro caters in to the adventure tourer motorcycle segment in the country which is fast growing in past couple of years. Ducati India already sells the Multistrada 1200 and 1200 S in India, while the 1200 Enduro  is a more hardcore version ideal for off-road. The 1200 Enduro is powered by 1,198cc Testastretta V-twin engine that develops 158bhp at 9,500rpm and 136Nm of torque at 7,500rpm mated to six-speed transmission.
