Celeb Travel Diary

Your guide to the best holiday destinations, as told to us by your favourite stars

We look to them for style guidance all the time; so why not travel in their footsteps too? Instep brings you the vacation hot spots that some of our favorite celebrities are flocking to this summer.

This week designers Huma and Amir Adnan share their Florence travel diary.

Why Florence?

Adnan: This was my third time in Florence and I had primarily gone to visit PittiUomo, the largest menswear fashion trade fair in the world. It was invigorating to get to see forthcoming trends for men’s fashion and witness how designers from around the world were putting together looks. What surprised me was the fact that a lot of people knew about us [Pakistanis and our country]. I met a Turkish businessman who is interested in opening a retail chain across Pakistan and an Italian lady who had lived in Karachi.

City Guide:

Adnan: Florence is one of the most culturally and artistically rich cities in the world so we tried to get in as much sightseeing as we could after spending the mornings at the fair. We saw the iconic Statue of David, the spectacular River Arno, the Duomo and the various charming and vintage flea markets that dot the city.

Huma: Florence is tiny, so we walked our way around the entire city. We would come back from the fair, change into our ‘tourist’ mode (because one had to really dress up for the Pitti Fair; it’s an extremely stylish event!), grab a map and just head out. It was fabulous, like walking around a big open-air museum. The cobbled streets of Florence haven’t changed for thousands of years.

Nearby Attractions:

Huma: We took a train to Pisa for a day trip and managed to do the ultimate tourist-y thing – take a selfie in front of the Leaning Tower!

Adnan: It was a great feeling to see one of the wonders of the world. We climbed the 294 steps to the top and I was surprised to learn that the tower is completely hollow from inside.

In-FlorenceRetail Therapy:

Adnan: Shopping anywhere in Italy is a notch above any other city in the world. The Italians really show you how easy it is to become stylish; every person on the streets – young, old, homeless – has an innate sense of style. The shopping too, reflects this fashion-forwardness. The clothes I bought fit so well and are so much smarter than anything I own; they make me feel twenty years younger when I wear them!

Huma: Italians make the best shoes and I picked up some. It was summer so the fashion was very vintage and countryside – you would see girls in pretty floral headwear and flowy tiered dresses, very similar to my line of chikan dresses actually! I also picked up local souvenirs to bring back home for family and friends.

Food:

Adnan: Huma and I usually avoid meat when we travel so we had a lot of seafood and vegetarian dishes. Italians have some delicious aubergine and potato based dishes. The pizzas are good but there are other things, such as the ravioli, which are even better.

The Hotel:

Huma: We wanted to be near the Pitti Palace, a gorgeous Renaissance period palace and the site of the trade fair, so we chose a small family-run hotel close by called Hotel Andrea. It was a charmingly little place – the family would cook breakfast for the guests and one could have it overlooking the city of Florence. To be honest, we prefer to stay at small boutique hotels rather than the big chains when travelling –  it allows you to get a true local flavor.

Travel Tip:

Adnan: Do not take public transport when in Florence. Just grab a map and keep walking. You are supposed to get lost at least once.

Huma: Take a selfie stick! There are so many gorgeous photo ops that you don’t want to miss a single one.

Travel Essentials:

Huma: A pair of comfortable jeans and a good pair of walking shoes for both us; for me, my nail art must also travel with me because I can’t live with unkempt nails.

Airline Experience:

Adnan: We went to Florence from London hence flew Lufthansa but the return trip was by PIA and I have to say it was a good experience. The staff was courteous, the food was decent and it felt good to be amongst our own people.

Longview's Fireworks and Freedom brings the city together

LONGVIEW (KYTX) – The Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center held its third annual Festival and Fireworks Celebration Saturday night.

There were many different type of attractions, such as carnival rides, food trucks, roller derby, slides and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

This is the first year the car competition was expanded to all cars. Public Information Officer Shawn Hara said this has been a favorite part of the celbration for many people.

“We’ve done a mustang car show,” Hara said. “We’ve done a corvette car show. This year, they said let’s just make it open doors to everybody, All-American car show and truck show too.”

Fifteen-year-old Tyler Wilder said he loves looking at all the different cars.

“The 66 Mustang for sure,” Tyler said. “The GTs. I just enjoy having fun out here. I’m thankful that we get to celebrate out here and be proud of our country.”

Another new part of this year’s celebration was the Xcelerator, which is an 86-foot-long, 46-foot-high water slide. Kids of all ages were riding the slide multiple times. Mayor Andy Mack may not be a kid anymore, but he said he is all about the water slides.

“When I was a kid and lived downtown off of 80, we used to have a slide just like that,” Mack said. “Every day, we’d go and do that slide. Super slides are my thing, I love them. I just want to end up in a pile of water.

This is Mack’s first festival as mayor and he said he appreciates what this day represents for Longview.

“It’s a great event for our community, for the citizens to come out and enjoy the activities,” Mack said. “We all can see the fireworks. We’re trying to do things that make the community better and gives the citizens more to do.”

Men more likely to get skin cancer urged to use suncreen

Discussions about sun damage and skin cancer often draw up images of young women and tanning beds, but it turns out men are actually more likely to get skin cancer, and less likely to slap on the sunscreen.

The Canadian Cancer Society estimates that 1 in 57 Canadian men is expected to develop melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. In comparison, it says 1 in 74 women is expected to develop the disease.

According to Toronto dermatologist Dr. Sam Hanna, men put on sunscreen half as often as women. Their excuses vary, he said.

“The things I hear from my male patients are they don’t like to put it on, it’s inconvenient, it’s messy,” Hanna told Daybreak Kamloops.

“They may do other things in terms of sun avoidance or sun protection, like wearing long sleeves or hats, which certainly are part of it. But unfortunately, sunscreen is still something we need to figure out how to get men to use because we’re not doing very well in terms of skin cancer rates, and deaths from skin cancer rates specifically.”

Hanna says roughly two-thirds of deaths from melanoma are men. To get men to put on sunscreen, here are some of Hanna’s tricks.

Take baby steps

“I don’t expect somebody who’s not used sunscreen for 65 years to suddenly get up every morning and start putting it on,” Hanna said.

“I’d love that, but I’ll tell them, ‘Fine. Let’s take the next time you go golfing, or the next time you go to the beach.’ Let’s use something like that and just make sure you’re applying appropriately and we can build from there.”

The health argument

“[I tell] somebody who’s health-conscious and eats right and exercises, this is a component of health, and that sometimes has some traction,” Hanna said.

Gather allies

“I’ll often be sneaky and involve their partners in that, and get them to be my people on the inside to bug them a little bit about keeping their sunscreen on,” Hanna said.

Letter: Practice safety while riding motorcycles

It’s summer. There are more motorcyclists taking their bikes out on the road than ever before, with a more than 84 percent increase in motorcycle registrations since 1998, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Unfortunately, many riders don’t take the necessary safety precautions. This increases their risk of traumatic head injuries and other problems.

According to the NHTSA and the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA), approximately 88,000 Americans were injured, and 4,600 were killed in motorcycle crashes in 2013. In South Dakota alone, there were 17 fatalities.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) offer the following motorcyle safety tips to keep riders safe:

Always wear a helmet and high visibility protective gear.

Choose or purchase a motorcyle with anti-lock brakes.

Avoid driving in inclement weather.

Always follow traffic laws, drive the speed limit, and never drive after drinking.

Take a motorcyle safety training course.

Avoid driving “sport” and “super sport” motorcycle models.

Have an exciting, but safe riding season.

Meet MiB: A custom built chopper motorcycle from Road Rage Customs Builds

Modified RE - Road Rage Customs (3)

The art of customizing motorcycles has been gaining momentum for quite some time now but with increasing disposable income, the interest is tilting towards more premium and exotic chopper motorcycles. While the likes of Rajputana Customs and Vardenchi are familiar to many, there are hidden talents that are spread across the world. One such talent that caught our attention was Gabriel Zuzarte-owned Road Rage Customs Builds from Mumbai.

Designed for the proprietor of a security firm, the MiB custom chopper uses a 2010 Royal Enfield Classic 350 as the base motorcycle. The motorcycle has been completely overhauled for a futuristic and stylish look. Yasin, the owner of the security firm and the client who owns the Royal Enfield Classic 350, asked Zuzarte to design the motorcycle that resembles his (Yasin’s) personality. The build was special for Zuzarte as Yasin didn’t bombard him with design ideas but believed in Road Rage Custom Builds to deliver a fine product.

Modified RE - Road Rage Customs (4)

MiB has a futuristic design with an outer worldly headlight and aggressive looks. Coloured to resemble a stealth fighter plane, the full black look of the MiB is finished with fine detailing. The chassis of the motorcycle is fabricated for two seat provision while the body panels are hand-crafted out of metal. Custom-made multiple spoke wheels are wrapped in 130mm and 200mm tyres at the front and rear respectively.

The fuel tank receives an air vent, however, we are not aware about the functionality of this design element. Concealed fork covers and a uniquely designed front fender add to the premium look of the motorcycle. Another unique feature is the tail end of the motorcycle. The tail light and the turn indicators are clubbed together into one unit for a clean, sleek look.

Modified RE - Road Rage Customs (1)

There are, however, some design elements which could have been designed with more refinement. We believe that Zuzarte, the designer, should have stuck with an all black stealth look and avoided the rather flashy handlebar grips. The attaching bolts of the pillion backrest could have been hidden for a cleaner, well-fnished look at the rear. But that’s our personal opinion.

Besides the visual upgrades, the MiB also receives some mechanical boost to go along with the aggressive styling. The motorcycle is equipped with a power air filter and a custom designed free flow exhaust system which adds to the performance of the motorcycle. The shortened exhaust pipe should also provide a better centre of gravity which would in turn result in better control and maneuverability.

Two charged in renewed crackdown on illegal use of bikes and quads

Police in Levenmouth have cautioned and charged a 15-year-old youth and a 30-year-old man in East Wemyss as part of a renewed crackdown on the illegal use of quad bikes and motorcycles in the Levenmouth area.

The teen was charged with riding a quad bike in the East Wemyss Cemetery, while the 30-year-old was charged with riding a motorcycle whilst disqualified, without valid documentation and without a crash helmet on Main Avenue, East Wemyss.

My Area Ward Officers will be using every piece of legislation at their disposal

Inspector Tom Brown

The crackdown comes as officers launch a new local action plan under ‘Operaton Reflector’, a national programme which replaces the local Operation Ducati.

PC Alan Shovlin, Levenmouth area ward officer, said: “As well as issuing anti-social behaviour warnings and reports to the Procurator Fiscal, we have also gathered useful information about regular offenders.

“We will continue to take action in the area and deal with people who ride their motorcycles and quads illegally.”

Inspector Tom Brown added: “Our local action plan ‘Reflector’ replaces previous plans but the ethos is the same – to prosecute offenders who persist in the illegal, dangerous and anti-social use of motorbikes and quads in public places.

“My Area Ward Officers will be using every piece of legislation at their disposal to ensure that those involved in the illegal use of motorcycles are caught. They also face the prospect of having their motorcycles seized.

“I would encourage local people to continue to contact us with any information they have that will assist us in keeping people safe.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Old man pants are cool now

Full-cut, high-waisted, and hiked up to the anatomical waist, they appeared repeatedly on the runways at the recently wrapped men’s fashion shows in Europe. Numerous designers presented them: Dries Van Noten, Lanvin, Margarett Howell, Ami, Umit Benan, even Off-White, the growing fashion label with streetwear roots headed by Kanye West’s creative director, Virgil Abloh.

There were plenty of other trends on display. Androgyny was everywhere. Sportswear persisted. But few things felt quite so new as the pants recalling those your grandpa wore. At this point they’re so far out of style in the mainstream, which is still dangling low-slung skinny pants from its hips, that it’s practically transgressive for a designer to show them on a young model, as though someone that age would actually wear them. Even skirts, which proliferated on the runways, felt a little staid and expected by comparison.

The details of the bottoms varied. Pleats were present here, absent there. Some tapered, while others were left to pool in folds.

The variety Raf Simons showed were so full and long they resembled ’90s-era raver pants, except that a raver would never have worn them pulled up so high, let alone paired them with a sweater vest. The older set might not find them fitting either. “It’s not like the senior citizens of the world are suddenly going to demand to be kitted out in Simons’ trousers that flare to puddles of fabric on the floor,” Tim Blanks wrote in his review for Style.com.

No, these trousers are updated in their cut, with old-school elegance, rather than just old, and the styling gave them an attitude more befitting of a kid in Paris or Tokyo than his grandparents.

If you’re not convinced that high-waisted pants can actually have an edge, consider that Rick Owens—the designer in the vanguard of the current wave of men in skirts, and the same guy who sent exposed penises down the runway last season—started toying with them in his fall-winter 2012 collection. His “Astaire” pants played on the 1930s glamor of their dancing namesake, as well as the baggy-crotched bottoms worn by LA gang members.

In recent seasons, Lanvin has tinkered with the style a fair bit, as has Christophe Lemaire, and earlier this year at New York Fashion Week they turned up in a few collections.

This season saw more of them than ever, and retailers appear to be taking note. “Looser-fit pants” were highlighted in a roundup by WWD (paywall) as one of the top buying trends among fashion retailers after the Paris shows.

Cars.com Reveals the Most "American" Cars of 2015

The list is in!  Each year, Cars.com releases its American-Made Index, a list that reveals which cars are the “Most American.”

This index is derived from information found on the window stickers of every new car, and takes into account where the car is assembled and what percentage of the car’s parts are domestic. That information is then aligned with the number of cars sold here in the States. Historically, the top spot on this list has gone back and forth between a foreign and a domestic automaker. Yes, that’s right, a foreign automaker could be the most American! Who will reign supreme this year? And why does this list continue to shrink each year?

Cars.com Reveals the Most "American" Cars of 2015

For old white men, a sad — and shocking — statistic

Old white guys, and I mean really old — 85 and older — are a lucky bunch. They’ve beaten the odds in terms of longevity. They’ve also arrived at this once-distant point in their lives in better health and with better access to medical care than most black or Hispanic men in the same age group. They’re financially better off than women, generally, in their mid-80s and beyond, too.

So I was shocked to hear in a recent discussion with Dr. Carl Clark, president and CEO of the Mental Health Center of Denver, that white males over 85 in the U.S., a cohort to which I aspire to join someday, have an astonishingly high suicide rate. It’s 51 out of 10,000, or about one in every 200. This group kills themselves at the highest rate of any demographic in America.

Curiously, it’s not really old age itself that’s creating this problem. If you strip out gender and race, this age cohort has a suicide rate of 1.8 per 10,000, just behind the 1.9 per 10,000 suicide rate for Americans between the ages of 45 and 64. Pulling up my calculator app, it seems that simply being white and male boost the suicide rate among those 85 and older by a factor of 28. For a demographic that, as a group, has historically had it pretty good, this is a sad end-of-life twist.

The actual numbers of suicides for those 85 and older — an age group I will unscientifically call the “old-old” — were 2,514 suicides in 2010, the most recent year for which reliable statistics exist. Put another way, it means that about every three hours a white male over 85 commits suicide.

Clark says that number is fairly stable across generations and geographies. Extrapolate that data out for an aging population over the next decades, and you have a very dire prediction.

The total number would increase by almost 92% to 4,825 old white male suicides by the year 2050. For context, that will be the generation born in and around 1970.

Those guys aren’t going out quietly with a bottle of pills, either. No, the gun is the leading method for elderly male suicide. White men over 85 are also unusually good at committing suicide. The elderly have a 4-to-1 suicide success rate, at the opposite end of the spectrum from the 25:1 ratio for young people.

Theories abound for the prevalence of suicide in the “old-old” age group. Major depressive disorder and other mental health issues are thought to be at least partly to blame in as many as 90% of the deaths. The loss of loved ones, isolation, hopelessness and persistent or serious physical illness often trigger the disease, which may have been lying in wait for them on some level, untreated, for a lifetime.

Clark suspects, and it sounds feasible to me, that most of those men who kill themselves have likely been struggling with untreated depression their entire lives. After all, estimates are that one in five people suffer with a mental illness, and only 50% get treatment. And depression is one of the more undertreated mental illnesses. It can sap people’s energy to seek treatment.

It would be a wise investment to tackle this problem, given the health-care-expense crisis in this country. Depressed people have a higher cost of health care across the board. Their lifetime health-care costs are some three to five times higher than the rest of the population. Taking care of oneself, exercising, eating well and following through with self-care and check-ups are all challenges for anyone with even moderate depression.

New counseling methodologies and medications may mitigate the trend of late-in-life suicides, as might the lessening stigma of depression and better education. Faster interventions and treatment, as well as using advanced technology and health-care apps for low-dose counseling, which could make mental health care more affordable and accessible for many elderly, also could play a role.

Still, it stuns me to know that, in the three hours I spent writing this article, somewhere in America an old man, an old white man, probably one who many would presume has led a long and fruitful existence, the kind of man one sees in retirement homes and Memorial Day parades, or on park benches and at the grocery store, perhaps with a walker, or perhaps a man like your grandfather or your father or your older brother or an uncle, or perhaps just someone you know, has taken his own life.

Motorcycle Accident Attorney Jason Waechter: Women's Motorcycle Month Starts Today

Motorcycle Accident Injury Attorney Jason Waechter – The Motorcycle Lawyer – wants drivers to know that July is Women’s Motorcycle Month. Waechter always encourages drivers to Watch for Motorcycles, and wants them to be extra careful this month as women who ride flood the streets in celebration.

Lansing, MI (PRWEB) July 01, 2015

July is Women’s Motorcycle Month, and Attorney Jason Waechter, known as The Motorcycle Lawyer by fellow bikers, wants to remind vehicle drivers to be on the look-out for women who ride. “More and more women are riding motorcycles these days,” says Waechter. “Vehicle drivers need to be vigilant and always watch for motorcycles on the road.

Motorcycle ridership has been increasing steadily over the last decade, and the number of women motorcyclists has also been increasing. According to a recent Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) survey, about twelve percent of motorcycle owners, and about twenty-five percent of motorcycle riders, are women. In fact, in 2008 there were more than 5.7 million female riders in the United States, a fifty percent increase since 1998. “Women are moving from the back of the bike to the front,” says Waechter. “More and more women want the independence and freedom that motorcycling brings.”

Waechter believes that more motorcyclists, regardless of sex, is good for the biker community. “I wouldn’t say there is safety in numbers,” he explains, “but I would hope that the more vehicle drivers are exposed to motorcycles, the better they will become at being vigilant and really looking for bikers on the road.”

Over the last two decades, Waechter has helped many people injured in motorcycle accidents. He is a strong advocate for motorcycle awareness and safety programs, and encourages everyone, whether they ride or not, to get involved and spread the word. “If nothing else, slap a bumper sticker on your car to remind the vehicle driver behind you to watch for bikers,” Waechter suggests. He has bumper stickers and other motorcycle awareness products and tips on his website.

In recognition and celebration of Women’s Motorcycle Month, Waechter is inviting all female riders to share their motorcycling stories on his Facebook page. “We really want to get a conversation going about and among female motorcyclists,” he says. “We want women to tell us why they ride, what the challenges are, why it’s worth it, and we want to hear their favorite story about being out on their motorcycles.”

As Andy Murray’s bid to win Wimbledon again starts this week, his mother has spoken out about the way she has been lambasted in the past for being so vocal in support of her son.

She was even blamed for the 28-year-old’s failure to win a grand slam before 2012.

‘I got a huge amount of abuse from people for being pushy, for supposedly having Andy tied to my apron strings,’ she said in an interview with Matthew Syed for The Times.

‘People used to say “the reason he hasn’t won a grand slam is because he is scared to lose in front of his mum”.

‘The very idea of a woman wanting the best for her kids, cheering for them when they won a point, was thought of as a bit unnatural. It would have been completely different if I was a man.’

Judy, who is also mother to Wimbledon doubles champion Jamie, said it was only after Andy won the US open in 2012 that she was finally seen as a help rather than a hindrance.

The public have also warmed to her after getting to see more of her personality thanks to her Twitter presence and appearance on last year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

As well as being passionate about her two sons playing well, tennis coach Judy is also determined to get more women into sport.

She wants more girls to embrace exercise and the associated benefits rather than worrying about how they look.

‘When I was at school, sport was a brilliant and empowering thing. Today, too many young girls are more concerned about getting their face on,’ she said.

Judy wants girls to realise that being athletic is attractive – no matter how sweaty you get – citing tennis champions Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova as prime examples.

She explains: ‘They are wonderful athletes but they also love dressing up. They do all the girlie things. They should dispel the thought that it is unfeminine to be ambitious.’

Andy has also been an advocate of women in sport after he hired Amelie Mauresmo to be his coach last year.

He said he was shocked by the sexism Amelie encountered and, as a result, he now considers himself a ‘feminist’, ‘if being a feminist is about fighting so that a woman is treated like a man’.

Judy agrees that tennis has often been a ‘man’s world’ and she believes this has to change.

She said: ‘It is so important to have women in positions of responsibility… that is true not just in tennis but in life. Young girls need to have strong role models and a more powerful sense of their self-worth.’

Under pregnant Amelie’s guidance, Andy is back to his best ever form and goes into Wimbledon with the Queen’s title and a semi final place at the French Open under his belt.

Judy admits he has ‘a great chance’ of winning again and whether people like it or not, she’ll be fist pumping and cheering him all the way.

Motorcycles descend on Anderson airport

ANDERSON — A lot of tires rumble over the runways at Anderson Municipal Airport but rarely racing tires on a motorcycle.

But a lot of motorcycles roared up and down one of the runways at the airport Sunday as part of the second Streetbike Shootout in Anderson.

For hours, motorcyclists from around the Midwest drag-raced their bikes down an eighth of a mile-long runway Sunday, trying to determine who had the fastest streetbike this year.

Mayor Kevin Smith, who was on hand to watch some of the racing, said the city was approached a couple of years ago about holding a street race in Anderson. He said having the race at the airport made a lot of sense.

Jeremy Teasley came from Columbus, Ohio, to take part in Sunday’s race. A competitive motorcycle racer since he was 13 years old, Teasley said he spends a lot of time at different tracks. He said this event marked his fifth consecutive week he’s been at various races.

He said racing on a runway is a little different for him.

“There’s not a lot of traction out there,” he said. “It’s different than an actual racetrack. The bikes have a tendency to get a little sideways if you’re not careful.”

The racers got a couple of hours to try out the track and get a feel for it before the real racing got underway. They were greeted by a large crowd as close to 1,000 people showed up at the airport to watch the racing. There were also about 100 motorcycle racers.

With such a large crowd on the second year of the event, Smith said he thought the race had a good chance to become a big event in Anderson. He also thanked the airport board for all the cooperation necessary to hold a day of racing on one of the airport’s runways.

Michael Peak, who works for the city’s park department, was helping out for the day. He said the race organizers were going to keep this event going for a long time.

“It’s a pretty cool thing we have here,” he said. “And people seem to like it.”

On the streets of Cuba

A technicolor array of 1950s American convertibles gathers daily at Havana’s Parque Central near the national capital. Most serve as taxis tourists can ride in.

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba — I climb into the back seat of a fire-engine red 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air taxi owned by Argelio Pena Mendoza here in Cuba’s second largest city. Mendoza turns the key, and the ancient inline six-cylinder engine wheezes and rumbles to life in a haze of exhaust smoke. He shoves the car’s three-on-the-tree shift lever into first, and we’re off.

Only Mendoza knows the secret of how the door handles work, so he lets me and my friend Tom in and out of the 58-year-old car as we tour Santiago’s highlights, including San Juan Hill, where Teddy Roose-velt’s Rough Riders won their biggest victory of the Spanish-American War in 1898.

Mendoza, a 60-ish man, pulls into a gas station. I wait for him to flip open the little chrome door on the left rear fin behind which the 1957 Chevy’s gas cap is famously concealed. But Mendoza’s car has no gas tank. Instead, he hoists the hood and pumps gasoline into a pair of 1-gallon plastic bottles under the hood in front of the radiator. These bottles are connected to the fuel pump by plastic lines. Mendoza opens the trunk to show me a hole in the floor through which I can see the road below.

“Maybe someday I will find a gas tank,” he says with a shrug. For now, he must make do, as do so many Cubans, whose mechanical resourcefulness never ceases to amaze me.

Mendoza says his father got the Chevy from his former boss: a wealthy man who fled Cuba for the United States before the 1959 Castro revolution and the subsequent U.S. trade embargo. The Chevy has been in his family ever since. The engine is original. The paint job is not.

Jeans Montero and his 1957 Buick Special at the Ernest Hemingway House just outside Havana. Montero’s grandfather purchased the car used in the late 1950s and it has been in the family ever since. Nobody knows how many miles it has clocked.

Cubans have by necessity evolved a different relationship with cars than Americans have. Rather than being traded in every few years, cars are revered as family heirlooms, refurbished continuously and passed down through the generations, more like homes.

These rolling relics of the Truman and Eisenhower eras, known as Yank tanks or maquinas, have become symbols of the endless inventiveness and ingenuity of Cubans fostered by years of economic hardship — years when nothing was thrown away, and everything was recycled.

Cuban mechanics did whatever was necessary to keep their cars running, whether that meant substituting an original Chevy engine with a Russian diesel or replacing tattered original bench seats with buckets from a Chinese car.

The classic cars here are almost like religious icons. Oil paintings of them adorn art galleries. Postcards and refrigerator magnets with images of the cars are ubiquitous in souvenir shops.

The old cars also serve as reminders of the deep friendship between the American and Cuban people that has survived more than a half century of embargo and political isolation.

“Americans have saved this country with old cars,” says Osvaldo Monteasudo Isla, an English teacher who was working at the Havana Biennial art exhibition. “Cuba is the largest living museum of American cars.”

To travel the roads and streets of Cuba is to journey back to a world before crossovers, computer-aided design, electronic control units, CAFE and collision regulations, electronic key fobs, navigation screens and catalytic converters.

During a two-week trip there in late May-early June, I saw vintage Chevrolets, Buicks, Pontiacs, Cadillacs, Fords, Mercurys, Edsels, DeSotos, Studebakers, Packards and Nashes, some dating from as early as the 1920s.

Nobody knows for sure just how many American classics are being driven daily on the roads of Cuba. Some estimates say 60,000. Until Cuba began loosening restrictions on vehicle ownership in 2011, the pre-revolutionary cars were the only ones that could be bought and sold.

Cars in Cuba fall into three categories: American cars up to the 1959 model year; Soviet cars such as Ladas, Moskvitches and Volgas; and cars imported after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, which include a mixed bag of Japanese, European and Chinese brands such as Geely.

Now that President Barack Obama has taken the first steps toward loosening the trade embargo, some Cubans worry what will happen to those cars in the first category, the cherished symbols of their national identity.

A 2010 Cuban law bans export of cars from the island. Even without that, the likelihood Americans might find cherry cars in original condition is slim because most have been through extensive alterations.

“There are a lot of Americans that have the dream of finding the rare car in Cuba,” Bill Warner, founder and chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance car show, told Reuters last year. “For the most part, the cars you see on TV are really pretty hacked up. You’d find better cars here in the United States.”

Christopher Elias, the Cuban guide for my tour, told me: “I think they will find a way for the old cars to stay. They are too important to Cuba’s identity.”

I hope he is right. The two weeks I spent in this ravishingly beautiful country — perhaps the most photogenic place I’ve visited in a lifetime of traveling — left me with a sense that Cuba is changing at warp speed.

It’s impossible to overstate the impact of seeing all those cars from the zenith of Rococo American design in one place, still on the road. Compared with today’s sleek, technology-age machines, they’re like exotic tropical birds, creatures from another universe.

Best to catch them now before they start to fade away.

Public transport in Cuba: Vintage American cars are frequently re-purposed in Cuba for other uses, such as this early 1950s Buick, now serving as a bus for workers and school children in the small city of El Cobre, 20 miles from Santiago.

The interior of this 1942 Willys in Santiago is anything but stock including late model bucket seats, gauges and steering wheel.

Cuba’s endlessly resourceful shade-tree mechanics take their vintage American vehicles right down to bare bones — and beyond — to keep them running. Often having no garages, they work on the street, as with this fellow rebuilding the rear end of his 1950 Chevrolet in central Havana.

Thanks to automotive historian John Wolkonowicz for help identifying some of the vehicles.
