Tesla Motors has broken the mold…again. The Tesla Model S P85D was given a perfect score by the independent not-for-profit Consumer Reports, but only after its score was adjusted down.
Consumer Reports has a testing methodology to asses the quality of an automobile. That testing framework had previously delivered a top score of 99 out of 100…to a previous Tesla Model S in 2013 (the non-Tesla high of 98 was awarded in 2014 to some company of a bygone era).
Then came the Tesla Model S P85. It broke through the framework and got a 103 out of 100. The final score was adjusted down as metrics were moved, so the final score was 100 out of 100.
Add to that the perfect score received in the U.S. Government Crash Test Rating and you know you have built something unique. Special measures had to be used to flip the Model S over at all (normal cars flip on the track at high speeds) and the government crash test roof crushing machine broke before the roof of the Model S did!
Consumer Reports and the US Government have been rating cars for over 60 years. Some of the automotive manufacturers competing for the ratings have been around for over 100 years. Tesla was founded twelve years ago.
In a little more than a decade, Elon Musk and his team at Tesla have changed all the rules, produced the best and safest car ever made and have forever changed the automotive industry (and with the building of the Gigafactory that will mass produce automotive batteries in Nevada…maybe another industry or two).
Innovation and creative destruction are at the heart of American capitalism. Elon Musk made a bet on the electric car. He risked $70 million of his own money (nearly a third of his net worth at the time) believing Tesla could succeed where others had failed. The entrepreneurial spirit that drives companies like Tesla is everything the world admires about America, and rightly so. That is what capitalism delivers: innovation, better products and cheaper prices (well not yet for Model S but the Model 3 will be here in 2017).
Today, Tesla employs 6,000 people mostly in the U.S. When the Gigafactory comes online in a few years it will employ another 6,000 people. When we talk about “job creators” in this country, there is no better example than Tesla. Tesla should be selling cars consumers want, innovating and exporting their products around the world. But there is a roadblock that even this “perfect” car can’t drive through.
This embodiment of what makes America great is running into some unfortunate realities of the modern American economic morass. Tesla wants to sell its cars directly to consumers but many states do not allow such a transaction. Why? Why can’t a consumer purchase a car directly from a manufacturer?
Entrenched interests. Antiquated regulations. A gridlocked political system.
Many states have outdated laws on their books that cars must be sold through car dealerships. This legislation enacted in the 1950’s to protect the car dealership networks that had risen to educate and service the first wave of mass market automobiles. Now Tesla is being forced to challenge these laws and is being fought by the car dealerships and their political patrons. These dealerships do employ a lot of people but the value they bring to the automotive supply chain is eroding. As history has shown repeatedly and without fail, you can not protect jobs in a dying industry. While entrepreneurship is a great strength of America so is our economic flexibility. By not modernizing laws to allow Tesla to sell cars directly. politicians are only delaying the inevitable and impeding a new American champion.
Tesla is only freely allowed to sell cars directly to consumers in six states, four more allow it with restrictions. In many states your government outright bans you from directly buying the best and safest car ever made.
These obstacles are stifling the American Dream. They stifle innovation. They increase prices to consumers. They let foreign competitors catch up to Tesla.
While the Tesla Model S P85 is priced beyond the reach of most, in time and at scale, Tesla will deliver more innovation, lower prices and you too can be driving a near perfect car. Car dealers and uncompromising politicians, please get out of the way. That sound you hear coming is the silent-roar of an electric engine powered by American leadership, innovation and ingenuity.
Congratulations on your perfect score Tesla, you are what makes America great.
Across campus, programs like the Gender, Power and Sexuality workshop — formerly FemSex — and Sexual Assault Peer Education foster conversations to help students examine issues of identity and gendered violence. Amongst these discussions, the new Men’s Story Project takes a novel approach.
Formed this fall, the Men’s Story Project brings together male-identifying students to create and share stories about their masculine identity. These conversations will culminate this spring in a performance that will showcase these narratives.
“What does that mean in terms of asking for consent if you need to be viewed as tough and domineering and hypersexual?” asked Marc Peters, men’s health coordinator, referring to gender themes that the Men’s Story Project seeks to address.
“We talk a lot in the meetings about how to frame the project,” said Ricardo Jaramillo ’18, one of the student coordinators. “It is a really delicate and complicated thing because the idea of it is not that men are being oppressed or that there needs to be more affirmation of masculinity,” he said.
The group instead aims to open a space for male-identified students to talk about the good and the bad that goes along with the “male” label.
“I didn’t know how to kick a ball; I didn’t understand why that was important; I didn’t know how to do all these manly things; I didn’t know (anything) about cars,” said Andrew Vann ’17, one of the student leaders of the project. “Coming to college … I came to the realization of why I was like that and that it was okay to be like that.”
The Men’s Story Project is not a uniquely Brown program. The program, created by Jocelyn Lehrer as part of her doctorate at Harvard, is now licensed to groups around the world who use the model to create their own variations of the project. The program is “a replicable storytelling and community dialogue project that brings exploration of social ideas about masculinity into public forums, through men’s own voices and stories,” according to the Men’s Story Project website.
The initiative is one-of-a-kind not only because it offers participants their own space to address ideas surrounding male identity, but also because it is specifically designed to be inclusive. It is open to all who self-identify as male, and 50 percent of participants should be nonwhite, according to the program’s guidelines.
Brown is among the first colleges and universities to start their own version of the program. “The fact that the University is strongly behind something like this says a lot about what we are trying to do on this campus,” Peters said. Transformative Conversations@Brown, an initiative of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, met the program with enthusiasm and unanimous approval, he added.
Most of the spaces available for conversations surrounding identity at Brown are geared toward groups that face systematic forms of oppression. While this is not the case for men in our patriarchal society, there are still many ways that traditional ideas of masculinity are harmful — both in how they affect men and in how those norms are expressed in gendered violence, Jaramillo said.
The program’s leaders expressed an openness to talking about sexual assault, emphasizing that they will be sure to act on the most comprehensive definition of the term.
“We have talked a lot about sexual assault, but often male survivors are left out of that conversation — so we can not forget some of those narratives,” said Justice Gaines ’16, a student leader of the project.
“Not all forms of sexual violence occur along the gender binary,” Vann said.
The group is currently reaching out to various constituencies on campus to recruit participants. The group hopes to recruit students who would benefit from the space and who could “put on a performance in the spring of next year so we can open it up into the community for these narratives to be presented,” Gaines said.
Peters said interested students should contact him for more information.
“I see this as a great opportunity for self-discovery and for people to come together and share each other’s stories … and understand each other’s struggles and be vulnerable with each other,” Vann said.

MUMBAI: With buyers of entry-level vehicles continuing to remain on the sidelines, Hyundai Motor India and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India have realigned their production strategies to push in-demand products — sport-utility vehicles and scooters, respectively.
Hyundai has restructured its manufacturing operations to make way for more Creta SUVs in place of entry-level Eon hatchback, while the local two-wheeler unit of Honda Motor is channeling more efforts to scooters from motorcycles such as Dream Neo, Yuga, said people with knowledge of the production plans at these companies.
Thanks to this restructuring, the Creta has already climbed to the leadership position in the SUV space within three months of its launch. Honda’s Activa has remained the No. 1 two-wheeler model for the third consecutive month in August, dethroning Hero MotoCorp’s Splendor motorcycle.
“We are changing our product mix as per the customer demand. That helps us in maximising productivity and profitability,” Rakesh Srivastava, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Hyundai Motor India, told ET. He said the company will continue to readjust its model mix. Hyundai has got more than 54,000 bookings for Creta since June. The compact SUV has a waiting period of more than six months in a market which is otherwise struggling with overcapacity and low demand.
It has deferred exports of the Creta by a few months to accommodate high demand in the local market and has ramped up its production by 50% from 5,000 units planned earlier to almost 7,500 units a month. Meanwhile, sales of the Eon hatchback fell from an average 6,200 units a month in the first half of 2015 to 4,700 in the past few months.
It is a wise move by Hyundai to make the most of the initial novelty, but the company should be wary of Renault’s new Kwid on the block, said Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst for forecasting at IHS Automotive.
Renault recently launched the Kwid, pricing it lower than the Eon and Maruti Suzuki’s Alto in an effort to capture the entry-level demand. Lowering its guard in that space could pose a risk to Hyundai, as Renault could eat into its share in the entry-level market.
In the two-wheeler space, Honda’s Activa accounts for almost one in every two scooters sold. According to Honda, it sold more than 1 million units of the Activa in the April-August period. Its scooters sales grew 20%, outpacing the 10% segment growth. The 100-110cc motorbike segment for Honda has seen a drop of 20% in the same period.
YS Guleria, senior vice president for sales and marketing at Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India, said the company had read the change in demand correctly and invested in its factory last year to bring in flexibility of 8 lakh units annually and accommodate the additional scooter demand.
“The motorcycle segment is falling. Instead of building stock, if I can sell scooter which is in demand, why not. That will be my first priority,” Guleria said. “All are struggling. You can also choose to be part of that struggle, or you choose a path which gives you higher volumes of a segment which is growing. We have taken the later path,” he added. But he called it a temporary strategy. Once the company adds capacity, the focus on motorcycles will return, he added.

Created by Clayton Jacobsen II, Jet Skis are the initial of its kind. Kawasaki ended up being the pioneer in the sector and they were the first to release and also standardize the motor vehicle. Later throughout the developing phases, Kawasaki released the model JS-400 with 400cc two-stroke engines. This event after that bring about the eventual success and acknowledgment of the brand-new automobile in the sporting activities globe.
Description
Depending upon the model, a jet ski could accommodate one to four individuals. Initially created as a personal watercraft, jet ski has actually currently advanced right into a sports and also transport vehicle.
The one-person version initialized its appeal which later triggered produces to standardize comparable watercrafts to cater the expanding market.
Initially, the style was implied for bending and also basing on a platform roughly situated at the rear of the equipment. However, innovation triggered newer models to offer the adaptability of varying positions with using crafted styles. Include in it the guiding pillar that enables vertical and horizontal movements. All these contributed to the biker’s liberty of motion and also whenever essential, wave activities.
The jet propulsion system, being the primary reason that jet skis are called was one of the most cutting-edge addition to personal watercrafts. This happens when the water is driven into a tube affixed in the craft and also is then expelled in the rear, therefore the jet impact.

It’s not often that you see the words “comfort” and “fashion” in the same sentence. But then again, it’s not often you see a season like Fall 2015’s menswear.
“Men’s fashion is more comfortable than ever,” says Shannon Stewart, the head buyer for Harry Rosen.
“It’s comfortable and beautiful,” adds Andrew Lepp, director of menswear for Holt Renfrew. “You still look polished. You’re not schlumpy.”
You can see this ease in the season’s soft tailored suits and jackets, the sleek roominess of a jogger pant, the lightweight warmth of the season’s luxurious knits. Best of all, it’s a look that is fresh, but not completely new, making it as comfortable for the mind as for the body.
“For men right now, it’s the return to the classics,” says Jorge Valls, men’s fashion director for Nordstrom, which just opened its long-anticipated Vancouver store. He’s loving the season’s traditional herringbones, tweeds, checks and houndstooths, and says, “Mixing them together in a new and beautiful way can be very rich.”
Rich. Cosy. Easy. Comfortable. Stylish. What’s not to love about Fall 2015?
Slim and trim
Pleats and wide leg trousers. That’s what the fashion-forward gent is wearing these days. “I’m actually wearing wide pants with pleats right now,” Valls admits, “but it’s not for everybody.”
Instead, what most men will be wearing is the same slim look they’ve loved for the past few years
“Slim and trim has really caught up with the mainstream,” Valls says. “The fashion guy has been in that space for 10 years. The more traditional guy is just getting into it.”
Stewart agrees: “I think in general the silhouette remains slim for the most part, but there has been a softening of the silhouette.”
That softening can be seen in an unconstructed blazer with its lightly padded, slightly rounded shoulders, in a voluminous overcoat and, above all, in the season’s ubiquitous, must-have jogger pant.
“The idea of the jogger pant has taken the world of menswear by storm,” Stewart says. “Just by nature of the silhouette, it’s a lot more relaxed than in the past. The jogger is not just for the weekend. It can be dressed up with a soft cardigan jacket.”
The jogger, with its elastic waist and cuff, comes in everything from the sweat pant fabrication that inspired the look in the first place to wool, cotton and technical materials, even tweed and pinstripes.
And it comes across all price points, too. “I think there are versions of it for everybody,” Lepp says. “The older guy, he might not be wearing it to work, but he’s definitely wearing it on the weekend.”
Voluptuous knits
“My gosh, the sweaters,” Valls says.
Fall is always a big season for sweaters. But this year is extraordinary. We’re seeing everything from the shawl-collared cardigans that have replaced blazers in many men’s wardrobes to ’70s-inspired turtlenecks worn under blazers to the return of the rugged fishermen’s sweater.
“It’s very classic men’s ideas, and almost utilitarian,” Valls says.
Texture is huge, with plenty of cabled, ribbed and marled knits. What makes this season especially exciting is that all those big chunky knits may look heavy, but most now come in featherweight fibres.
“They’re lofty in appearance, but not necessarily heavy to wear,” Stewart says. “The yarns are so light you can wear them under a jacket. The idea of layering for fall has never gone away. Knits layered under a soft constructed jacket is key for fall.”
Rich colour
“Colourwise, we like the blues, the navies, the greys. Blue is always going to be the biggest colour for guys,” Valls says. “Grey is really important for fall. And it has a tweedy texture to it. Gorgeous.”
Certainly, you can’t go wrong with a cool navy suit, a wintry grey overcoat, an icy blue-striped shirt.
But this season we’re seeing two exciting new colour trends that suggest fashion will soon be going in a much warmer direction.
“We’re seeing lots of wine and burgundy as accent statements,” Stewart says. Think of a burgundy tie or a pocket square, perhaps in a small geometric print, or a crew-neck sweater worn under a blazer. Subtle, but still impactful.
The other hot colour is one we haven’t seen much of in the past two, even three, decades: camel, which is especially of the moment when worn with grey.
“It’s difficult to wear in large quantities,” Stewart says. “But it does make a really beautiful rich accent. And it’s an elegant colour.”
“Camel is such a great fall colour for guys,” Lepp adds. “It’s traditional. It was gone for a long time, but now it’s back. It’s warm and it’s comfortable. It looks really rich.”
Essential outerwear
Like last fall, this year is a fantastic season for outerwear.
After all, as Stewart points out, given the climate across the country, men really do need a wardrobe of outerwear.
“You probably need three to four pieces to get through a Canadian winter,” she says. Those should include a puffer vest, a parka, a raincoat and a classic overcoat. “If you’re looking for something practical and versatile,” Stewart says, “I would suggest a short car coat style that would work over a business suit or for a more casual look on the weekend.”
For something luxurious, add a shearling bomber jacket. It’s a key piece for this season, and a wearably stylish nod to the ’70s trend that is likely to be the next big thing.
What’s next?
If you’ve seen any photos from recent runway shows, you may be wondering if the calendar has slipped back four decades or so.
“There’s a big moment with the ’70s,” Valls says. “Prada and Gucci have always played in this space and Gucci’s new designer is really playing with it and a lot of androgyny.”
The question, he says, is how that will work into the garments men will actually wear.
Stewart believes that where we will see the ’70s trend is in “retro-looking shearling jackets with the large collar. That item has really shown a resurgence for the season. That’s something luxurious a man can invest in.”
More important than following any trends, though, is maintaining a look that truly fits you and your life. As Lepp says: “Keep it fresh. Buy some new clothes. Don’t wear anything worn out. You want to look polished and pulled together.”
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam urged Volkswagen to quickly address consumers’ worries about the company’s vehicle emissions-testing scandal because of the potential impact on sales and jobs at VW’s Chattanooga plant.
“My primary concern is getting Volkswagen back to where they’re in a mode to sell cars,” Haslam told reporters in Nashville on Monday.
Haslam’s concerns come as state Sen. Bo Watson, R-Hixson, tries to set up a Chattanooga meeting between legislators and VW officials next month.
Watson said the meeting would publicly address worries related to the automaker’s efforts to defeat emissions tests on many of its diesel vehicles — including the locally made Passat — and how VW will move forward.
“We want everybody working as much as they can work” at the plant, Watson said.
VW’s Passat diesels represent about 29 percent of the sedan’s U.S. sales, according to Kelley Blue Book. Jack R. Nered, KBB.com’s executive editorial director and market analyst, said it’s a reasonable concern that the emissions issue could, in the short term, affect the Chattanooga plant’s workforce.
Nered added that he didn’t think the problem will have long-lasting effects on VW sales. He said the situation offers a chance for the car company to more aggressively push its U.S. products and efforts to expand in America.
State Sen. Bo Watson is interviewed by editors during a meeting at the Times Free Press.
“It’s American workers building American cars for American consumers,” he said.
Chattanooga VW plant spokesman Scott Wilson said Monday afternoon the factory is operating as normal.
“The construction project for the plant expansion to build the midsize SUV and the production of Passats continues as before,” he said. “We are currently in a ramp-up phase of the all-new Passat per our planned schedule.”
VW has put a stop sale on all 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged direct injection-equipped vehicles. The company said it’s working with agencies to obtain approval for model year 2016 2.0 liter TDI vehicles, which officials believe do not have any of the issues the government has identified in other vehicles.
“We are working very hard to get our 4-cylinder TDI business restarted as soon as possible,” the company’s statement said.
House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick, R-Chattanooga, said VW needs to get to the bottom of the scandal.
“You know they’re talking about fines. I think they need to be talking about people going to jail if they did this,” McCormick said. “It’s a huge fraud by a huge company that has plenty of attorneys to vet this kind of thing. There’s no excuse for it.”
McCormick said plant workers have asked him, “‘Do you think this is going to affect us? Or are they going to close the plant, that kind of thing. I can’t imagine they would close the plant after making that big investment. It wouldn’t shock me if they didn’t slow down their expansion plans though."”
Meanwhile, Haslam said he has two concerns.
“No. 1, we have an investment in the original plant and then the expansion. Second, we obviously have a vested interest in their success; I mean, in them selling cars. And so we’re urging them to get everything out in front of everybody as quickly as possible so existing customers can understand what the solution is going to be and [so] that Volkswagen can have a clear path forward.”
Tennessee government provided an estimated $358.2 million of the original $577.4 million in incentives that drew Volkswagen to build its Passat in Chattanooga. Local governments provided the remaining $219.2 million.
And this year Tennessee, Chattanooga and Hamilton County governments committed to more than $260 million in incentives for a new line of SUV production.
“Obviously there’s a lot of questions out there in the consumers’ mind. I think that’s why it’s really important for Volkswagen to come out quickly and say, ‘Here’s what we’re going to [do to] address our existing customers and here’s why we can assure potential customers that they’re going to get the vehicle they think they’re buying,"” Haslam said.
Watson said there are worries of a domino effect on jobs related to the plant and its suppliers.
“That’s all of our concerns,” the Senate speaker pro tempore said.
Miguel Lopez-Quesada, a spokesman for Spanish VW supplier Gestamp, said it’s too soon to have a clear forecast on how the scandal may affect that company.
Gestamp this summer announced a $180 million expansion in Chattanooga, the biggest ever for a supplier in Hamilton County, and plans to hire 510 more people.
The Passat is all the Chattanooga plant now makes, though VW is spending $900 million to develop a new midsize SUV and expand the factory.
“The SUV has an opportunity to be its saving grace,” Watson said.
Nered said the fix for Passat vehicles likely won’t be a software one, which was used to defeat testing procedures.
“It’s difficult to conceive a software fix,” he said, adding he believes there will be “a hardware” repair involving a urea-based system. Urea is a clear, non-toxic solution that can be stored in a tank onboard the vehicle that lowers pollutants.
“It doesn’t appear any other car manufacturer has solved this problem without using such a system,” Nered said.

A Detroiter is sharing his personal story of surviving prostate cancer in hopes of educating other men about their health.
In the fall of 2013, 60-year-old Charles Smith decided to go to the MIU Men’s Health Event at Ford Field. He was excited to take his grandson Christian, who was 7 at the time.
“I was just going to take the grandson, and me too, to get on the football field, I’ve never been on Ford Field,” Charles says. But before getting on the field, Charles needed to go through the health screenings, so he reluctantly got in line.
After you get in there, you have another line, another wait, so it’s almost like, everything was (saying to me) turn around. But I just couldn’t draw myself away and I really believe it’s because of what I believe: my faith in God.”
A week later, a letter came saying his PSA level was high. That’s the prostate cancer blood test. Then, the news from his doctor.
“They told me, yes, you do have cancer but thank God, we caught it at a good time,” Charles says.
Months later he was at Henry Ford Hospital undergoing robotic surgery to remove his prostate. When surgery is the treatment choice, robotic prostatectomy is the most popular.
“This process has been very is innovative technologically advanced and really assured men a very improved outcome.” explains Michael Lutz from the Michigan Institute of Urology.
Charles is a guy who gets an annual physical and thought he was perfectly healthy. His message for men? Pay attention to your body.
“Do what you have to do stay healthy. If not for you, for your family, those who love you,” he says.
The MIU Men’s Health Event is happening at Ford Field this Saturday, October 3. You get a lot of free screenings from dental to depression to prostate cancer, and you can attempt to kick a field goal on Ford Field.

It’s a harrowing year to be a motorcyclist traveling on Lee County roadways.
In the first nine months of 2015, 19 motorcycle riders and passengers have died in crashes, a 46 percent increase from all of 2014, when 13 fatalities were reported.
Those deaths account for 26 percent of Lee’s 76 traffic fatalities through last Friday, 22 more than occurred through the same date last year.
In Collier County, there were 26 traffic deaths through last Friday, up from 22 through the same date in 2014. A News-Press records search found two motorcyclists have died in Collier so far this year after three such fatalities in 2014.
The contributing factors for Lee’s motorcycle fatalities are the same ones that lead to passenger vehicle deaths – speeding, driving under the influence, failure to stop at a traffic signal and reckless driving.
Nine, however, resulted primarily from other drivers’ actions, the most common of which is simply failing to notice the presence of a motorcycle.
“It’s like a football game,” said Shayne Hanley, the president of the Lee County chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education, or ABATE, a motorcycle rights organization. “When I’m on the road, I’m either playing offense or defense because people aren’t taking into account that I’m out there.”
And when a car or a truck hits a motorcycle, it’s the motorcyclist who invariably fares the worst. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, per mile driven, fatality rates are 26 times higher for motorcyclists than for passenger vehicle occupants. Nationally, while motorcycles account for only 3 percent of all vehicles on the road, they account for 14 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities.
A tragic ride home
Lesley Colantonio wasn’t thrilled when her husband Robert purchased his first motorcycle in the final days of 2014.
“It made me nervous,” she said. “But Robert was the kind of person who never asked for anything so I wanted to make him happy.”
So she reluctantly supported her 49-year-old husband’s wish and crossed her fingers.
“I told him I didn’t want him to become a statistic,” Lesley Colantonio said. “He’d look at me like I was crazy and say I was worrying for nothing.”
Tragically, her fears were realized. On Jan. 3, less than a week after her husband purchased his 2001 Harley-Davidson Road King, he was struck from behind by a hit-and-run driver on I-75 at mile marker 116 in Bonita Springs. Colantonio, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene.
“He took all the classes, did all the right things, always wore a helmet,” Lesley Colantonio said. “It didn’t matter.”
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash that killed Colantonio. FHP Lt. Greg Bueno said the hit-and-run vehicle has been impounded, but the investigation is ongoing to establish the driver. Anyone with information can call the FHP at 938-1800.
“I don’t like to think about the fact this person could be roaming the streets for the rest of their life and not pay for what they did,” Lesley Colantonio said. “This person must have zero conscience.”
No universal helmet law in Florida
While wearing a helmet wasn’t enough to save Robert Colantonio’s life, studies demonstrate helmet usage, like seat belts, greatly increases a motorcyclist’s chance of surviving a crash.
Florida, however, is one of 28 states that require helmets only for specific riders; in this case, for riders under the age of 21 or for those with less than $10,000 in medical coverage for motorcycle-related injuries. Three states (Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire) have no law.
A 2014 study showed 89 percent of motorcyclists wore helmets in states with universal laws compared to 48 percent in all other states. According to the Centers for Disease Control, between 2008 and 2010, fatally injured motorcyclists in states with a partial helmet law were more than five times as likely not to have been wearing a helmet as those in states with a universal helmet law (64 percent versus 12 percent).
Hanley, who said he frequently wears his helmet, especially on longer rides, said he believes motorcyclists should have the right to choose.
“My opinion of that is let those who ride decide,” he said. “In fact, I have a sticker that says that on my helmet.
“It’s kind of a touchy issue. To me, it’s an issue of freedom. We have so many people telling us what to do in this country it’s unbelievable.”
Safety courses mandatory for new riders
Obtaining a motorcycle license involves a lot more than just passing a road and written test. In Florida, prospective riders are also required to complete an approved motorcycle safety course consisting of approximately 20 hours of classroom and on road training.
Six Bends Harley-Davidson in Fort Myers offers just such a course at its Riding Academy. Sheila Corbin, the manager of the academy, said instructors stress that all riders are responsible for their own safety and stress the importance of wearing proper riding gear, including long sleeved shirts, denim pants and yes, helmets.
“Cars don’t always see people on motorcycles so we encourage them to wear bright clothing and a reflective safety vest,” she said. “It’s important that they’re always aware of their surroundings – in front, behind and on the side.”
Damien Suffridge, 23, of Fort Myers is one of the riders enrolled in the Six Bends academy. The Indiana native said he grew up riding motorcycles on back roads in his home state.
“The most important thing is being in control of you own bike and paying attention to what everyone else is doing,” he said. “It’s a lot different than being in a car. You have to worry about everyone else when you’re on a motorcycle.”
