Chelsea artist presents 'Motorcycle Mamas' at Silver Maples (WITH SLIDESHOW)

CHELSEA — A life-sized doll resembling motorcyclist and stunt rider Bessie Stringfield (born 1911) points the way to Gallery 100’s new exhibition, “Motorcycle Mamas.”

Vintage motorcycles and artistic dolls, as well as historical photos and advertising materials that trace the history of women and motorcycles, are on display through August, off the main lobby of Silver Maples Retirement Community.

Six life-sized artistic dolls, created by Chelsea artist Jill Andrews, ride four rare vintage motorcycles, which her husband Elliott collected and restored. He used to work in the motorcycle industry and race, and he continues to collect and restore bikes.

Stringfield was the first African American woman to ride solo across the United State on a motorcycle. She did it eight times. She also won races, disguised as a man, but they denied her trophies when her gender was found out. However, she would later come to be know as “The Motorcycle Queen of Miami.”

“There have always been women doing amazing things, but they weren’t always acknowledged for it because they were women,” says Jill.

Elliott’s custom café racer, a silver 1968 Honda 175cc, is one-of-a-kind. He based it on a 1968 Honda street bike frame, but added parts from all over the world and had some pieces special made. ‘Café racer’ was a term first used in Great Britain in the 1960s to describe street legal motorcycle that were custom made to resemble racing bikes.

“They were the rockers who dressed kind of like Marlon Brando in the movie The Wild One and rode street bikes that were modified to look like racing bikes. But they weren’t in real races at that time. They raced from café to café, thus the name, from hangout to hangout,” Elliott says of the original meaning of ‘café racers.’

Paired with the 1968 custom Honda is a doll inspired by singer and actress Marianne Faithful. She was not a motorcyclist, but she acted in the 1968 cult classic “The Girl on a Motorcycle,” a bad movie but good example of the changing image of women on motorcycles in popular culture.

“I wanted to make ‘Motorcycle Mamas’ that look like they come from the time periods of each motorcycle,” Jill says. Faithfull wears go-go boots and a Mondrian-inspired color-block dress. Continued…

Most of the dolls are not actual people, rather “more of a conglomeration of people from the time period of each motorcycle, how they looked and what they wore,” she says. A lot of the clothing is vintage, too. Some dolls are partially inspired by people she knows.

A 1965 Honda CA110 Sport 50 is similar to the first bike Elliott bought, when he was 18. The doll riding it is inspired by his sister, a motorcycle rider herself. The red leather pants are hers from the 1960s.

The other motorcycles in the show include a 1976 Kawasaki KZ900 LTD, a big chopper-style bike. 1976 was the first year Kawasaki manufactured their big bikes in the U.S. with American-made parts, according to Elliott.

A 1980 Yamaha TZ125G is a true racing bike.

“These were sold to what were called privateers, non-factory sponsored riders who wanted to race. But this particular one was not sold in the United States, because the U.S. didn’t have a racing class for it,” Elliott says.

Historical photographs included in the exhibition tell many stories about pioneering women motorcyclists.

Hazel Watkins traveled her stunt show around the world, mother and daughter Avis and Effie Hotchkiss were the first women to cross the U.S. on a motorcycle, and Dot Robinson co-founded Motor Maids. These are just a few of the stories you will find in the exhibition.

The exhibit is primarily about women, however there is one motorcycle ‘papa’ in the show – Elliott himself. Photographs from his career in the motorcycle industry are also included in the exhibit.

He has worn many hats, including working as a factory rep for Honda before opening a Kawasaki and Harley Davison dealership. In 1971, Elliott took third-place in a Dayton road race on a motorcycle he had built. In 1973, he set a national record in drag racing at the ATCO Dragway in New Jersey. His certificate hangs in the show.

In 1982, he left the industry to work in university administration in Cal-Tech’s engineering division, where he worked for 24 years before his retirement. He still collects, restores, and rides motorcycles. Continued…

As an artist, Jill paints, makes dolls — celebrities, people she knows, and fantastical creatures — and wearable art. Her artwork is currently sold at Artistica Gallery, in Dexter, and she teaches doll making at Veo Art Studio, in Chelsea. These are her first life-sized dolls.

The “Motorcycle Mamas” exhibit is something to see for motorcycle enthusiasts and art lovers alike. And it is also an introduction to an interesting and somewhat overlooked aspect of women’s history.

The thought of buying an electric car may seem more enticing as gasoline prices slowly encroach on the $4 mark once again.

Police see spike in motorcycle theft in St. Charles County

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – Four St. Charles motorcycle owners are wondering where their bikes are, after waking up to find them missing from their parking spots. A few weeks earlier, another four motorcycles were stolen in O’Fallon.

Police say each of these thefts happened overnight, and at apartment complexes. St. Charles Police Officer Erik Lawrenz explains, “From my past experience, they specifically target the motorcycles at apartment complexes, usually because they’re out in the open, and easily accessible.”

In St. Charles, the thefts happened at Remington, Sun Valley Lake, and Country Club Place Apartments. Sun Valley Lake Apartments Resident Twila Brandstrom says, “It makes me a little nervous, especially because someone tried to steal my car last year, so I don’t like to hear that crime might be increasing in the area where our family lives.”

Country Club Place Apartments Resident Darren Lawson adds, “I was actually considering buying a motorcycle here pretty soon, but now I’m thinking, maybe I ought to wait before I move out of this apartment complex.”

According to police, rocket style and ninja motorcycles are targeted because of their size and weight. The lightweight motorcycles can be easily lifted by two people, and hoisted into a truck.

Lawrenz adds, “Generally when you see a bunch of thefts like this in one night, you’re working with somebody that’s done this before and has outlets for the bikes to go. It’s not a crime of opportunity; it’s what they’re specifically looking for.” Lawrenz says stolen bikes are often stripped down and sold on the black market.

Unfortunately, none of the recently stolen motorcycles have been recovered, but to prevent future bikes from being stolen, Lawrenz suggests parking them inside a garage, making sure the forks are locked on the motorcycle, and getting an alarm system.

There are no suspects at this point. If you have any information on these thefts, or see anything suspicious, call St. Charles or O’Fallon police.

Silverstone the ultimate man's world? Speedy Susie begs to differ

Not fast enough to win, anyway. At least, that’s what we’ve all been led to believe. The fairer sex just can’t “cut it” at the top of the speed game according to some high-ranking folks in the sport – we’re not genetically able, apparently. Not muscular enough, not tough enough, not, not… men.

Loading article content

Men can drive Formula 1 racing cars, and they can go really fast in them, too. Hundreds of miles an hour in a straight line, before breaking and turning a corner, subjecting their neck muscles to the kind of G-forces that would make the rest of us pass out. Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel, all champion F1 racing drivers, all men.

Susie Wolff, a woman (though that was probably obvious), can drive Formula 1 racing cars though, and this week she’ll do it on one of the biggest stages motorsport has to offer.

The Silverstone Grand Prix, the British home of F1, takes place on Friday 4 to Sunday 6 July and Wolff will be taking part. The 31 year-old Oban-born professional racer has been a development driver for Williams Formula One team since 2012, but this is the first time that she will sit in an F1 car in front of spectators on a competitive race weekend. Wolff will also be the first woman to drive a F1 racing car at a Grand Prix event for 22 years.

The Williams team announced that Wolff would be driving in the first practice sessions at both the Silverstone and Hockenheim (German) Grand Prix this year, after impressing her bosses with fast lap times during testing days. Though to be clear, driving in a practice session isn’t the same as competing in a full-blown F1 race, but for female racing drivers, and Wolff’s career particularly, it’s an enormous step in the right direction.

Despite her achievements, while Wolff speeds around the Silverstone track there will undoubtedly be the odd murmur about female racing drivers, their abilities and their limitations.

Indeed only last year racing legend Sir Stirling Moss suggested that women lacked the mental strength to compete in F1. He said: “We’ve got some very strong and robust ladies, but, when your life is at risk, I think the strain of that in a competitive situation will tell when you’re trying to win. The mental stress I think would be pretty difficult for a lady to deal with in a practical fashion. I just don’t think they have aptitude to win a Formula One race.”

It’s the kind of view Wolff has heard many times in her racing career, but one that she has consistently ignored and, more importantly, proved wrong. Indeed when Wolff heard of Sir Stirling’s comments she said: “I completely disagree with him. It makes me cringe hearing that.”

Wolff’s message? Women can drive F1 racing cars. Given the chance, they could even win.

Pulsar top choice of thieves

CHANDIGARH: Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle is the favourite of thieves in the city. Their use in chain snatchings spurred crooks to lift 326 of them —- highest for two-wheelers — in the last three and a half years in Chandigarh, statistics with the police revealed.

Figures of the modus operandi branch (MOB) of the crime branch mentioned that a total of 121 Pulsar were stolen in 2013-14, 99 in 2012 and 106 in 2011.

Police sources said, “The prime reason behind maximum thefts of the bike was that they were used in snatchings and robberies. Numerous cases were reported in which snatchers used stolen Pulsar motorcycles.”

Honda Activa was the second two-wheeler the thieves preferred to target, stealing 295 of them in the three and a half years.

As many as 127 Honda Activa scooters were stolen in the last one and half years, 77 in 2011 and 91 in 2012.

Figures pointed out that 1,929 two-wheelers were stolen from the city between January 1, 2011 and May 31, 2014, while 2,979 vehicles were stolen in this period.

UT SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said, “There have been a number of instances when a number of stolen vehicles have been found abandoned at parking lots and residential areas. We always stress and urge city residents to adopt modern safety gears to avoid thefts.”
