Church to help longtime Dayton businessman get bikes out of the brush

A Kittanning church is going to help a businessman rediscover hundreds of motorcycles overtaken by weeds on property outside his shop in Dayton.

Kenneth Knestrick, 81, has been collecting motorcycles and selling them for parts through his business, Knestrick Cycles, for about 30 years. While the collection grew, his health failed, and weeds and other plants took over the bikes he kept in a field outside his shop.

On Oct. 4, a youth group from Harvest Community Church, armed with gardening tools and trash bags, will help Knestrick clean up and inventory his collection, which he estimates to include about 500 motorcycles of nearly every make produced between 1970 and 1990.

“I’ve got one foot in the grave, and the other foot is on a banana peel, so it’s time to figure out what I’ve got buried out here,” Knestrick said.

Pastor Dave Lusk said at least a dozen youth group members, ranging from 13 to 18 years old, will move the motorcycles and clean out the overgrown weeds and debris.

“It’s been a few years since anyone has gone out to help him, but we’re trying to teach our youth group that when people need help, we should always be willing to lend them a hand,” Lusk said.

Knestrick’s love of motorcycles began in 1953. He needed an inexpensive way to make his 3-mile commute from his parents’ Brownsville home to a construction site, so he bought a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He worked construction jobs until 1980, when he bought a farm in Dayton and tried raising livestock.

“There wasn’t any money for me in the farm business,” Knestrick said. “I was in my garage when I decided to go into the motorcycle business.”

Knestrick and his wife, Emily, started Knestrick Cycles in 1986. He built a shop next to his garage two years later. He bought most of his motorcycles at police auctions throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland, often snapping them up for pennies on the dollar.

Most of the motorcycles he would sell for parts, although he would occasionally fix and resell them.

Knestrick stopped going to the auctions and fixing bikes in 2002 when his wife died.

“My wife ran the place so I could go to the auctions,” Knestrick said. “The day after the funeral, I sat down in my shop, looked around, and realized I’ll never live long enough to get rid of all of this stuff. I haven’t bought a bike since.”

But Knestrick has gone into the shop every day since and still handles several calls a week from people looking for old parts. He never thought about getting the weeds cleaned out until several months ago, when Armstrong County Commissioner Dave Battaglia paid a visit to his shop.

Battaglia told Knestrick the History Channel’s “American Pickers” was considering a second visit to Armstrong County, and that he would suggest they visit his shop. American Pickers never stopped by, but that was OK with Knestrick.

“I wasn’t too interested in the Pickers,” Knestrick said. “But Battaglia was real nice. He offered to get the church group out to help me clean up. And that was all right with me.”

Although Knestrick has back problems and doesn’t walk as fast as he used to, he still likes to get on his Harley Davidson — only now he’s traded in his two-wheel motorcycle for a trike.

Business has slowed down, since most people rely on the Internet to buy their parts now, Knestrick said. Still, he has no plans of stopping.

“I’m semi-retired, but I’m going to do this as long as I can. Motorcycles are what I love,” Knestrick said. “I figure I don’t have much time left, so I like to get out on the road and kill some bugs as much as I can. There’s nothing like it.”

American Legion to hold car wash in Livermore Falls

LIVERMORE FALLS — The American Legion Post 10 will hold a car wash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Main Street and Reynolds Avenue to benefit the post.

Members will wash cars, trucks and other vehicles to help support the George Bunten Post. They need volunteers to help wash the vehicles.

“Times have been tough for Post 10 the past few years, when we had to replace our heating system, oil tank, chimney and water heater three years ago,” organizer and member Don Simoneau of Fayette said. “All those items have put a huge burden on our finances. And last winter, the heavy snow load on the roof took our chimney down again.”

The American Legion Post has supported this area since July 1919 with Boys and Girls State, high school scholarships, veteran services and assistance, and military funeral services, he said.

They have also provided veterans educational services to fourth-graders, provided flag education in local schools, supported Boy Scouts, the historical society and church groups, and held blood drives, he said.

Post 10 members are active in the community in many other ways, Simoneau said, including veterans’ grave registration and flags on veterans’ graves and the Memorial Day Parade and Independence Day programs.

People who want to help but cannot attend the car wash may mail donations to George Bunten Post 10, 17 Reynolds Ave., Livermore Falls, ME 04254. Write “Post 10″ in the note section.

Gay, bisexual men complacent about HIV testing, study finds

Survey results released Thursday suggest a troubling complacency toward HIV among gay and bisexual men in the United States that public health experts say could undermine efforts to slow down or even stop the spread of the disease.

Fewer than 20 percent of gay and bisexual men have been tested for HIV in the previous six months — as recommended by national public health agencies — and nearly a third have never been tested at all, according to a survey conducted in the summer by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The same survey found that gay and bisexual men were largely uninformed about drug therapies to prevent HIV and that most of them rarely, if ever, talk to their doctors about the virus.

The results are frustrating to HIV experts and gay advocacy groups because they come at a time when treatment and prevention therapies abound, but nationwide rates of new HIV diagnoses continue to climb among gay and bisexual men. Halting HIV requires individuals be aware of their HIV status and health care options — something that the findings suggest isn’t happening.

“HIV has kind of faded into the background in the lives of many gay and bisexual men,” said Richard Wolitski, senior adviser in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “It underscores how important it is that health care providers and community-based organizations make sure that they’re continuing to remind gay and bisexual men of the impact of HIV on the community. And that we continue to talk about the virus.”

The Kaiser survey involved 431 men across the country, and it’s impossible to say how well the results apply to any one city. Gay and bisexual men in San Francisco almost definitely are more aware of HIV treatment and prevention options than men in other parts of the country, said local and national public health experts.

San Francisco is one of the few cities where rates of new HIV diagnoses are falling among men who have sex with men. There were 359 new HIV diagnoses in San Francisco last year, down from 426 in 2012. Those diagnoses were among all people in San Francisco, but men who have sex with men account for more than 85 percent of cases.

Nationwide, new HIV diagnoses among gay and bisexual men increased 12 percent from 2008 to 2010, the most recent year available, according to the CDC. New diagnoses rose 22 percent among men under age 25.

“HIV has remained on the mind of the city and community here, since the beginning of the epidemic,” said Dr. Susan Philip, director of Disease Prevention and Control in the San Francisco public health department. “We have a relatively good situation compared to what’s happening nationally. What we need to realize is we can’t become too complacent. We can’t back off.”

Gay and bisexual men are “knocking down doors” to get HIV tests at Magnet, the health clinic run by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation in the Castro, said Pierre-Cedric Crouch, director of nursing. But even in San Francisco, there are barriers to getting tested, he said.

People might not realize they’re at risk of HIV, for example. They might think they’re only having sex with people who are HIV-negative, even if their partners also aren’t getting tested regularly. Other people may not know where to go to get tested, or they may falsely believe that they’ve taken an HIV test during a regular doctor’s visit.

Still, Philip and Crouch noted that men in San Francisco are much more likely to know their HIV status than men in other parts of the country. About 8 percent of gay and bisexual men in San Francisco who are HIV-positive don’t know it, compared to 18 percent nationwide, according to the CDC.

That’s important because multiple studies have shown that early treatment of HIV is critical to both the individual’s long-term health and a reduction in spread of disease. People who start taking antiretroviral drugs soon after diagnosis can reduce the amount of virus in their blood to undetectable levels, which research has shown can cut to nearly zero their chances of passing on HIV to someone else.

But the Kaiser Family Foundation study found that not only were many men across the rest of the nation not getting tested for HIV nearly often enough, they also didn’t know how effective antiretroviral treatment is, for both health and prevention. Fewer than half of those surveyed said they were aware that drug therapy should start immediately after diagnosis, and only about 25 percent said they knew that treatment could prevent spread of disease.

Also, only about 25 percent of men surveyed said they knew about pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, which is an antiretroviral drug that can be given to uninfected people to protect them from the virus.

“There are some significant gaps in awareness. And that matters in terms of people understanding their risk of getting HIV,” said Liz Hamel, director of public opinion and survey research for the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The irony, Hamel added, is that a large proportion of men — 75 percent — said they recognize that people not knowing their HIV status is a major cause of continued spread of disease, even as they admit they don’t get tested as often as they should.

The Kaiser survey found some striking differences in attitudes and awareness among different age and ethnic groups. Gay and bisexual minority men were much more concerned about becoming infected with HIV than white men — 53 percent compared to 28 percent.

Not surprisingly, older men were much more likely than men under age 35 to have been personally affected by HIV. More than half of older men said they knew someone with HIV and 47 percent said someone close them had died of HIV.

“We get a sense that a lot of younger gay men don’t see this as an issue that is personally impacting them,” Hamel said. “More than half say they’re not personally concerned about getting infected. … There’s a sense of ‘It’s not an issue that I need to take action on personally.’”

That’s an attitude that can’t continue, said HIV and patient advocacy experts.

“We have really effective ways for people to protect themselves. We have more to offer people now than ever before,” Philip said. “We need innovative ways we can continue to engage people and have them not being fatigued by this issue.”

Home ministry clears proposal to buy motorcycles for BSF, CRPF

NEW DELHI: Home minister Rajnath Singh’s two-kilometre long motorcycle ride through the hotbed of Maoist insurgency in Jharkhand’s Saranda forests on Tuesday signified more than just a photo op.

The ministry is in the process of clearing a proposal from paramilitary forces CRPF and BSF to buy over 5,000 motorcycles for its troops battling Maoists as twowheelers have emerged as the “safest” mode of transport for troops in the region, given the use of landmines by ultras to target cops. BSF last week sent a proposal to the home ministry, seeking 10 new motorcycles for each of its companies posted in Maoist-infested areas, a ministry official said.

The CRPF was recently provided 2,000 motorcycles for its troops deployed in such areas. Singh rode one of these new bikes. “CRPF wants 3,000 more motorcycles and that proposal is also under process,” said the official.

TEMECULA: Motorcycles, BBQ to mark opening of education center

The rumble of motorcycles and the smell of BBQ will mark the grand opening of the Temecula Higher Education Center.

The free event, which will allow business leaders and future students to check out the new facility, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the old City Hall building, 43200 Business Park Dr.

The center is located on the second floor of the building, the same structure that houses the Temecula Valley Entrepreneur’s Exchange, a city-backed business incubator.

The city is leasing the second-floor space for $1 a year to Mt. San Jacinto College, which is partnering with California State University, San Marcos, and offering classes there.

Karin Marriott, a Mt. San Jacinto College spokeswoman, said the target audience for the grand opening event is business leaders, business owners, parents of high school students and the students themselves.

According to college officials, the partnership will allow a “seamless transition” from an associate’s degree to a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

“Students interested in business administration and elgible for college-level English and math will be the first to take advantage of the new program beginning in fall 2014,” according to a release.

Marriott said all the classes for the program will be offered in the center, sparing students a commute. It also should provide a strong value, she said, because tuition for students will be locked in and they will be guaranteed the ability to graduate in four years.

Students who sign up will move through the coursework at the same time, giving them a chance to study together and help each other out.

“They build bonds and teams and work together through the program,” she said.

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday, when motorcycle riders participating in the 5th Annual Mt. San Jacinto College Foundation Scholarship Motorcycle run will gather at the San Jacinto campus for a continental breakfast.

From there, the riders will take a scenic route to the education center, where they will receive a BBQ lunch, which is covered by the riders’ donation to the fundraiser. Non-riders who show up for the grand opening event should eat beforehand or prepare to pay for the BBQ.

For more information visit msjc.edu/CSUSMbusiness or call 951-487-3409.

The first floor of the building, which served as the city’€™s hub of governmental operations from 1996 to 2010, was converted into a business incubator in late 2012

According to city documents, the center will be offering courses and programs that satisfy transfer requirements for four-year schools, vocational and technical programs, basic skills and English-as-a-second-language programs and continuing education programs and classes.

Cal. State San Marcos opened a Temecula satellite campus on the eastern side of the city in 2008, the same year MSJC opened the Temecula Education Complex on Enterprise Circle West, a business park on the western side of town.

Driverless Cars Will Make School Choice Easier

4324234

The buzz surrounding driverless cars is heating up. The innovative new technology has the potential to revamp the entire U.S. surface transportation system and forever alter how drivers view mobility. The U.S. Institute of Electrical Engineers has estimated that up to 75 percent of all vehicles will be autonomous by 2040, but the first consumer models produced by Google, Ford, and Nissan could be available by 2020. Driverless capability comes with the initial promise to reduce traffic accidents and surrounding deaths and injuries by up to 93 percent, but the secondary effects could make tremendous waves in other areas of public life.

One of those places could be the U.S. school system, where one of the most significant barriers to school choice is transportation, especially for low-income families. Last week, the Cato Institute’s Jason Bedrick wrote about the connection between driverless cars and the future of school choice or giving parents more freedom to choose the best schools for their children — whether it be public or private. The commute from home to school is often one of the most important deciding factors when it comes to choosing schools. Driverless cars have the ability to greatly lessen commuting time which opens available opportunities for parents to choose new schools.

The safety implications of a driverless car fleet are extraordinarily positive. Each year, over 30,000 Americans are killed in automobile accidents, and thousands more are injured. Human error remains the cause of 90 percent of these accidents. Accidents are cut down by removing the human element from the driving experience and implementing advanced computer systems that react faster than the naked eye. Similarly, reducing accidents will drastically limit congestion and increase the efficiency of roads as these vehicles allow for less following distance between vehicles. Driverless cars do not only increase mobility for the youth but also the disabled, the elderly, the drunk, the sick, and other groups who have faced traditionally limited travel options.

But aside from the safety, congestion, and mobility issues, driverless cars enable greater school choice for parents. As of now, if the schooling options in a given geographic area are all below average, the student does not have a choice for better education. In many cases, better schools are outside the geographic area and require timely commutes which make them unreachable, but driverless cars have the ability to change this.

The unbelievable truth is the every 26 seconds, a student drops out of school. Far too many students, especially in minority communities, are simply not receiving an education that is preparing them for long-term success in the real world. Educational options are limited, school districts are determined by arbitrary lines, and the needs of students are not prioritized. By allowing parents to choose their child’s school outside of their district, pressure is applied to those poorly-performing schools. School choice enables educational competition to improve districts.

The logistics of a long-commute to more schooling options are mitigated with this new technology. Bedrick cites a 2009 study by the Center for Reinventing Public Education that found one-fourth of all families and one third of low-income families in Denver and Washington, DC, “did not enroll their child in the school they preferred due to transportation difficulties.” The report adds that nearly half of private school and charter school parents reported commutes of twenty minutes or more.

Expanding educational options furthers competition that raises the level of educational value. In his article, Bedrick explains a simple Google search found twelve private schools within three miles of his home but two-hundred thirty schools within twenty-five miles. Driverless cars can help lead to a more competitive school system.

Not only will regulating driverless cars result in the deaths of more American travelers, but it will keep schoolchildren stuck in zip-codes and failing schools without options. It’s time to free up schoolchildren and save lives by welcoming driverless car technology to the U.S.

If You Love Motorcycles, You Don't Want to Miss This Fast-Growing Austrian Bike Maker

Motorcycle sales rarely seem to be discussed online. Or at least not in as much detail as new auto sales, which are released each month.

Motorcycle enthusiasts — and corporate shareholders — are likely well aware of the industry leaders and how they are faring. But since the topic doesn’t get as much publicity as new car sales, I figured I would shed some light on the subject.

While companies like Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha dominate the industry in terms of sheer volume, there are many other players in the industry, too.

Names like Ducati, Polaris  (NYSE: PII  ) , and Harley-Davidson  (NYSE: HOG  ) have also cemented their presence here in the motorcycle world. But there’s one lesser-known Austrian company that has quietly taken market share over the past year: KTM Power Sports (NASDAQOTH: KTMPF  ) .

KTM, which trades publicly on the Vienna stock exchange, has done well this year, with the stock up a whopping 68%.

How’s the sales front looking?
KTM saw a large boost for fiscal 2013 (click here for the annual report) in unit sales growth. The company sold 123,859 units, which represented a 15.6% increase for the year. Revenues grew 17.1% as a result, while net income soared 44.2%.

But the company hasn’t been a one-trick pony. In the first half of 2014, KTM has sold just over 70,000 motorcycles, a 27.8% increase year over year.

For comparison, in 2013, Harley-Davidson only saw revenues and units sales increase 6.4% and 4.4%, respectively. Polaris, which makes the Indian and Victory motorcycle lines, saw revenues jump 12% last year.

This year has been a little different, though. Harley-Davidson has seen unit sales climb 7.3% and 9% in the first and second quarters, respectively. However, for full-year 2014, management now expects to sell 270,000 to 275,000 units, representing growth between 3.5% and 5% from year-ago results. This is slightly below its previous guidance, which called for 279,000 to 284,000 units.

Polaris, on the other hand, continues to rev its engine. Motorcycle sales are up a whopping 79% in the first six months this year and perhaps could explain why Harley-Davidson — while not doing poorly — is not doing as well as management had hoped.

Market share
According to Harley-Davidson, the company controls 50.3% of the U.S. market share as of the most recent quarter. According to Polaris, they are No. 2 when it comes to market share here in the U.S.

Well, KTM is quite a ways away when it comes to market share in the U.S., securing just 4% at the end of its fiscal 2013. However, that’s 8.5% higher than in the previous year. The U.S. is the smallest of the company’s three geographic regions, the other two being Europe and the rest of the world.

In Europe, it secured a new record market share level of 8.5% in 2013, as sales increased for the company while the European motorcycle market declined as a whole year over year. Forty-six percent of the company’s revenue comes from this region.

What can we expect going forward?
There’s no doubt that the motorcycle industry is doing well; we do not need to analyze each company’s sales data to draw that conclusion. Polaris nearly doubled sales in the first half of this year, while KTM has catapulted its sales nearly 30% in the same period.

KTM, while having a small presence in the U.S., is making strides in the market, as well as in Europe and India. The company continues to focus on its off-road bikes, which have been the primary driver for KTM for years. The segment represented 50% of the company’s unit sales last year, which only grew 3.2% over the year prior.

However, its street bike segment unit sales grew roughly 38% in 2013 and made up roughly 40% of the company’s unit sales. This is a high-growth area the company should focus on expanding going forward.

KTM isn’t the top-selling brand, nor does it boast the most heralded lineup. But that doesn’t mean things aren’t starting to change. The company was unprofitable before Bajaj Auto took what started off as a 14.5% stake in KTM in 2007, before ending up with a 48% stake at present.

So far, that bet seems to be paying off, as KTM has been improving sales, revenue, and, most important, profitability. That’s probably a large component of the stock’s near-70% move higher this year alone.

Stay tuned for more coverage on this — for now — little-known Austrian motorcycle company.

Ways to feel with Ladies

If you are hoping to be successful on the planet of temptation, you’re visiting need to understand how to feel. When a lady looks at a man, from her distinct point of view, among the essential factors she views is just how sensitive you are. It can genuinely be a pass or fail particular. If the woman in your life does not see a sensitive side, she’s going to be put off. Individuality counts for a lot, especially if you’re hoping to go further with a connection.

To begin with, it is essential to comprehend just exactly what level of sensitivity is. Level of sensitivity, or being sensitive, is just among those things that’s gotten such a bum rap regarding make it practically a taboo. Yet false impressions are to blame for that, and we could disregard such mistaken beliefs here so we could proceed with business of coming to be a much more delicate man. However what level of sensitivity really is, in truth, is responsiveness to points around you. It’s a basic feeling of just what’s taking place.

Regrettably, you may be assuming you’ve already got it pegged. But do not believe it’s merely an issue of self-awareness and a general concept of the globe around you. The level of sensitivity women really want in a man goes a bit further. Or, put much more directly, females are wanting a certain type of sensitivity in guys.

Here’s an instance you make certain to remember from some movie you once viewed: a young married couple are walking along a street in the evening, and the temperature is falling. Conveniently, she had actually neglected to bring a layer, but he had actually born in mind to bring his. He notifications her shivering, and rapidly offers his coat to her, despite his very own demand for the coat.

Okay, that’s a fundamental instance. However exactly what concerns is that the professional understood his partner’s need, as well as he did something about it. Furthermore, he made a sacrifice for her. This is a big deal. When a man can be a lot more concerned concerning the welfare of someone else than himself, he’s got a chance to impress the girls.

Short Film Review: It's A Man's World

Kristina Barry | On 21, Sep 2014

Within the first minute of It’s a Man’s World, the audience is bound to be gripping their chairs as they witness such an intense, suspenseful, terror-filled tragedy unfold before their eyes.

An airborne virus has broken out prior to the film’s starting point, taking the lives of women, and only women, turning the unfortunate into flesh-craving zombies.

mans02Explained through amazing illustrations, the audience learns about the past as well as the uniqueness of the virus; where women become man-eaters, literally.

Unfortunately, despite the dreadful situation the world finds itself in, there are always people within society that make it worse.

Flesh Panderers. Considering all the women are infected, men have long since lost their chances of sexual encounters. Flesh Panderers have managed to secure these women in a particular way so they can offer them as sex slaves.

Mark, played by David Breen, has lost his fiancé. His brother-in-law Jono, played by Chris Bartholomew, knows his wife is being held as a sex slave and intends to free her.

This fantastic short film takes the audience through an adventure full of horror, shock and suspense as the two men venture to release Jono’s wife.

Dan Van Werkhoven has created an immaculate score that successfully drives the story’s emotion through subtle cues.

mans03Another standout element is production design. Kind reminders of hopelessness are lightly dabbed around their world, reiterating the bleakness of their predicament. With the film’s slightly saturated colour emphasising this more.

With shots and lighting changes perfectly suiting the situation at hand, It’s a Man’s World shows thoroughly amazing creative thought, helping heighten the quality of the production.

It’s a Man’s World is available for online viewing until the 25 September through Viewster.

This short film will be screening at the Screen It! Film Festival on the Gold Coast on the 27 September.
