Kaufman: Fashions are making less sense

As I sit to write this, it occurs to me that today is a big deal for two reasons. One is St. Patrick’s Day and I’m not wearing green. But then I’m not drinking green beer either, which I have been known to do. Even had the green teeth to prove it.

The other is the start of the NCAA basketball tournaments. Also, I would bet, the start of major league gambling for the rest of the week. Basketball has its brackets. Football has the spread sheet.

I did a lot of gambling, but never on sports. Probably because I don’t care to watch them. Husker football is the only one.

If there is absolutely nothing but sports on the TV, I watch golf. It really looks easy until you try it. Not my game. Bowling was more up my alley. Excuse the pun.

Men’s fashion seems to have taken on a new look. Perhaps recycled is a better term. Back in the old days Saturday night was “open” night in most small towns. Stores, etc. stayed open late into the evening. Every one to some extent dressed up a little bit for the occasion. “Put on your best bib and tucker” was the phrase my mom used. And I have no idea what a “tucker” is.

The farmers especially would be wearing their best bib overalls along with a white shirt and their Sunday suit jacket. Usually a fedora instead of their everyday straw hats. Might add these gentlemen removed those hats when speaking to the ladies.

Today, at least on TV, the men who used to wear suits now wear jeans for slacks. Along with their suit jackets and ties. Sometimes even a vest. Makes me wonder. Either go dressy or casual, but mixing them just doesn’t seem right. As long as I’m wondering: Why do late night show men keep buttoning and un-buttoning their suit coat jackets? If they are standing up, they are playing with their coat buttons.

In women’s fashions, ugly shoes seem to take center stage. Since my wardrobe comes from WalMart or the second-hand store, you know I am up on my fashion statements. Back when I was a kid, we girls made our own high heels. You lay a beer can on the side and smashed your shoe heel in. It would stick in the can and walla, high heels. Yes, it was beer cans. Soda, or pop, as we called it came in bottles. Most beer did, too, but there were a few brands in cans.

Here’s a true pop bottle story. Back in the germ-free days, several of us would pass one bottle back and forth. Remember it was a creme soda at a football game. About halfway down we thought something was in it. Turned out to be a mouse. We pep club girls were out behind the bleachers throwing up for all we were worth. We still shared the bottle after that, but you can bet it wasn’t creme soda!

5 Easy Ways to Strengthen Your Stool

But a good argument can be made for shipping some of your poo to a lab. Your feces can reveal a lot about your microbiome—the community of microbial organisms that lives on your skin and inside your nose, mouth, and especially gut.

You have 100 trillion of these critters, and an unhealthy biome can cause a range of problems from acne to anxiety, says George Weinstock, Ph.D., of the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine.

Don’t think of these microbes as freeloaders who move in and wreak havoc like a bad roommate.

They’re part of you. There are 10 of them for every one of your human cells, and together they make up the “superorganism” that is you, says Weinstock.

You pilot the ship, but your microbial friends—tiny warriors with names like Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes—man the turrets. They offer first-line defenses against pathogen invasions and signal your immune system when more antibodies are needed for backup.

“Every part of your body has a symbiotic relationship with your microorganisms,” Weinstock says.

Related: The Better Man Project—2,000+ Awesome Tips on How to Live Your Healthiest Life

Diversity is critical: Generally speaking, a wider range of microbes creates stronger protection from chronic health conditions and autoimmune diseases.

Depression, type 1 diabetes, obesity, even cancer—your risk of developing any of these maladies drops when your microbiome is as lush as a rain forest, he says.

To see how normal dudes fare, we created a contest: Two volunteers swabbed some used TP and sent the samples to a lab, uBiome (tests start at $89, ubiome.com), to learn whose gut was more diverse.

Volunteer one: Adam Smith, 24, with a history of acne and gastrointestinal problems. He controls both by avoiding grains, gluten, and sugar.

Volunteer two: Craig Merrick, 40, a gym owner who eats a healthy, well-rounded diet and works out hard four days a week. His biggest health threat is stress, which can cause inflammation and throw off gut bacteria.

About a month later, the results were in: Both guys had above-average biodiversity scores. But Smith had less biodiversity than Merrick—predictable, given Smith’s problems.

“If not for his diet changes,” which affect gut health, “his microbiome would probably have been much worse,” says Weinstock.

And both guys could still probably improve: A 2014 study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports that the average microbiome of an American adult is about a third less diverse than those of our ancestors and people in less developed countries.

Related: 3 Things You Don’t Want to Find In Your Poop

That may be partly due to our heavily processed diet and the overuse of antibiotics that wipe out good bacteria along with the bad.

There’s still a lot we don’t understand about the microbiome, says Weinstock. But we’re learning more all the time.

We already know several ways to improve its biodiversity. Hack yours with these tips and you’ll see an uptick in your immune function and overall health.

1. Eat Lots of Fiber

Gut bacteria love fiber: Researchers at NYU have linked an increased intake of fiber from beans, fruits, and vegetables with a greater abundance of both Actinobacteria (which produce natural antibiotics) and Clostridia, a class of microorganisms that’s been linked to decreased risk of colorectal cancer.

Related: 10 Weird Reasons You Can’t Poop

The average fiber intake in the study was 14 grams a day; you’d be wise to aim for almost three times that, which amounts to just under 3 cups of black beans.

2. Workout to Help Your Gut

You can bolster your biome at the gym. Male pro athletes have significantly more diverse gut bacteria and lower levels of inflammation than less active and sedentary men, a recent study in the journal Gut reports.

The researchers aren’t exactly sure how exercise diversifies a person’s microbiome, but the effect may be from a combination of breaking a sweat and eating for performance.

Related: 6 Ways Your Health Suffers When You Stop Working Out

The athletes consumed 100 more grams of protein a day than the control group did.

3. Eat Whole Grains

The Paleo crowd talks about carbohydrates like they’re poison.

Pay no attention! In a recent study from the University of Nebraska, healthy adults who consumed 60 grams of whole grain cereal every day experienced significant improvements in metabolism, immune function, and microbial diversity.

Yes, fiber certainly played a role in those results, but the study authors suggest that whole grains might confer additional anti-inflammatory benefits.

4. Don’t Take Too Many Antibiotics

The current generation of prescription antibiotics are broad-spectrum—in other words, they target good and bad microbes indiscriminately.

Recent studies indicate that this can disrupt your microbiome within three days, and Swedish scientists say it can take up to four years to restore the balance.

No, you can’t always avoid antibiotics, but you can ask your doctor for the safest option.

For example, a Dutch study found that amoxicillin has no effect on microbial composition. (You shouldn’t pop the pills for these 5 Conditions You Shouldn’t Take Antibiotics For, either.)

5. Drinks Lots Of Coffee

Coffee’s laxative effect may signal that there’s something positive going on in your digestive tract.

Swiss scientists found that drinking three cups of java per day could bolster your gut’s levels of Bifidobacterium.

Related: Why Coffee Makes You Poop

They speculate that these beneficial microbes help prevent bad bacteria from moving in and taking up residency in your intestinal tract.

Credit probably goes to the slew of beneficial compounds that exist naturally in coffee, such as chlorogenic acids. So go grab another cup.

Uber Reportedly Shopping For Driverless Cars But Ordered 100000 S-Class Mercedes-Benz: Ultra ...

Uber app on a smartphone

Uber is reported to have ordered 100,000 autonomous Mercedes S-Class in a bid to expand its own car fleet. The cars will cut costs on drivers and offer premium services to customers.
(Photo : David Ramos | Getty Images)

Ride-hailing service Uber has ordered at least 100,000 autonomous S-Class Mercedes Benz cars, says reports.

Autonomous cars are expected to hit the roads not before 2020 but they will save Uber a lot of money spent on drivers. According to sources familiar with the matter, Uber has been shopping for self-driving cars and has now placed orders with the German carmaker.

“They wanted autonomous cars. It seemed like they were shopping around,” says the anonymous source.

Many vehicle makers have been working on fully autonomous as well as semi-autonomous cars and Mercedes is one of them. However, the company currently does not have any fully autonomous car on offer. Mercedes is hoping to launch its autonomous S-Class in 2020.

In August 2013, Mercedes Benz developed an S-class limousine, which drove 103 kilometers (64 miles) between the German towns of Mannheim and Pforzheim without any input from the driver, which reflects the company’s efforts towards autonomous car technology.

Analysts suggest that by 2020 the autonomous car technology market will be worth $25 billion. Companies may be ready to launch autonomous cars by 2020 but analysts believe that these cars will not make their way to the roads until 2025 or 2030 due to government regulatory hurdles.

Individual countries and states in America have different laws for testing self-driving cars. In 2011, Nevada passed a law that allowed testing of autonomous vehicles there. Auto industry experts suggest that regulators are very likely to pass legislation for autonomous cars if these cars reduce pollution and congestion.

The American transportation networking company operates in more than 50 countries and about 300 cities around the world but it is not making profits. Ordering more than 100,000 Mercedes S-Class sedans not only points at cutting driver costs but also highlights at the company’s desire of offering ultra-premium ride to customers.

Neither Uber nor Mercedes has commented on the 100,000 Mercedes S-Class car orders. However, it is not a secret that Uber is also pursuing its own self-driving technology. Uber has also announced the expansion of its Pittsburgh facility, which will be used for testing driverless cars.

Uber’s business model relies heavily on drivers using their own vehicles. Ordering 100,000 autonomous cars is definitely a change of business model, which may help the company in reducing the cost-per-mile and also address the assaults made by Uber drivers on passengers.

It is worth noting that German carmaker BMW has also revealed its plans to start a ride hailing service, which will compete with the likes of Uber.

F1's Susie Wolff on how to succeed in 'a man's world'

By Rebecca Smith Thursday, 17 March 2016

The former test driver shares the challenges of climbing the ranks and why performance is power.

More often than not motorsport is considered a male-dominated world, but former Williams F1 test driver Susie Wolff is adamant that’s not the case.

‘There are lots and lots of brilliant women in motorsports; they just don’t have the spotlight shone on them – they’re not out on the racetrack,’ she said, speaking at MT’s Inspiring Women conference in Edinburgh. And Wolff would know. She’s carved out a career – working her way up from karting to Formula Renault and Formula Three, before moving to compete for Mercedes-Benz in the DTM. In 2012, she was signed to work as a development driver for the Williams Formula One team.

‘I’d love to tell you it was a seamless journey to the top, but it was tough, it was really tough. And there were more tough days than there were good days,’ Wolff explains. ‘The harsh reality of sport is that at the end of the day it’s only about one winner.’ And to date, there hadn’t been many women, which threw up other challenges. An example Wolff gives was at the age of 18 and ranked 15th at the World Championships in karting.

‘I wasn’t on the podium, but I was called to come up to the ceremony from the tannoy. I was invited to collect an award for the best female driver in the world and I remember being totally embarrassed,’ she says. ‘I wasn’t there to be the best female – I was there to be the best, that was the first moment I realised this path might be slightly different to what I’d envisaged.’

It was moments like this, she says, which gave her a steely determination to succeed. She completed a year at Edinburgh University because ‘there was a certain pressure’, and soon realised that wasn’t what she should be doing. ‘Forget plan B. If there’s no plan B you’ve got to do everything to make sure plan A works,’ Wolff says. She secured a job as a marshal and ‘could barely afford to pay the rent, but I was chasing my dream’.

She was making her way up the ranks when a broken ankle threw a spanner in the works. ‘Those were some of my darkest days. When you’re an athelete and lose momentum it really holds you back,’ she says. Other setbacks followed, including being told she wouldn’t be supported for a full season because a sponsor had miscalculated its marketing budgets and she ended up having to find £250,000 in two weeks.

Wolff’s big break came with Mercedes-Benz in Germany, but again ran into trouble as they hadn’t had a female team member. While Wolff says there are many women within motorsports, there aren’t great a numbers on the front line, so to speak. She faced a great deal of ‘I don’t know how to train a girl so I’m not doing it’, despite Wolff driving the same car, being on the same team as all the male drivers.

So she put her foot down and said she’d do the same training as the men. ‘The first thing on the agenda was a five hour mountain climb. After ten minutes my face was like a tomato,’ she says. The group pushed ahead, but kept checking back and saw she kept going. ‘I think that moment of me showing them I wasn’t a diva, that I didn’t expect to be treated differently, that I was willing to push hard to find and earn respect from them, meant that I was welcomed into the team.’

Finally her determination and hard work (not to mention skill) paid off when she joined Williams Formula One as a development driver, before hanging up her helmet last year. She’s since launched Dare To Be Different, an initiative to inspire more women into motorsport.

So what were the big lessons she’s learned from battling adversity and treading a successful path in a widely male-dominated field?

1. Find your passion in life. ‘If you find the thing you love, the tough days become that little bit easier to deal with. The truth is you’re never really working because you love what you do.’

2. Follow your gut feeling. ‘We all have it, you need to give it time and listen to it. It won’t always send you on the easiest path but I’m a great believer that it will lead you to the one of greatest contentment.’

3. Dream big. ‘We all need to know where we want to be, what we want to achieve, where do we want to be in five years. Dream and dream big but always realise that a dream without a plan on how to achieve that is just a wish.’

4. Performance is power. ‘As long as you’re doing a brilliant job, nobody else will be able to have that power, regardless of the environment.’

We’re tweeting along with the Inspiring Women conference from @WhatCeiling. Join in with the #InspiringWomenhashtag.

Missed out on Inspiring Women Edinburgh? There’s still time to get tickets to our Birmingham conference on 21st April – check out the programme here.

Motorcycle helmet bill stalled

A proposal to eliminate the requirement for all motorcycle riders to wear helmets motored into a roadblock in the Legislature Wednesday and headed toward a decision on Thursday on moving forward.

A motion will be in order late on Thursday morning to end a filibuster led by Sen. Robert Hilkemann of Omaha, clearing the path for a test vote measuring support for the bill (LB900) sponsored by Sen. Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins.

For Bloomfield, the bill represents his last opportunity as a senator to accomplish a long-held priority to remove the restriction applied to motorcycle riders. The senator, a former truck driver, will be term-limited out of office at the end of the year.

Debate on the proposal traveled familiar ground, pitting what Bloomfield described as “freedom to choose” against the risks of riding without a helmet and the costs resulting from accidents, particularly in dealing with and treating brain injuries.

Hilkemann offered a motion to shelve the bill, suggesting it could serve as “a trial vote” to measure whether a later motion to end a filibuster ultimately would attract the 33 votes required.

That motion failed on a 17-25 vote, but the 17 votes represented just enough strength to sustain an ongoing filibuster in the 49-member Legislature.

However, Bloomfield said during a brief interview he has assurances from some senators who may have voted to bracket the bill that they would not vote to sustain a filibuster and thus allow the Legislature to move to a decision on the bill itself.

Bloomfield offered a revised proposal this year that addressed some of the objections raised by opponents of his previous bills.

This year’s measure would allow riders 21 or older to choose whether to wear a helmet or not. In any event, they would be required to wear eye protection or be protected by a windshield.

Children under 8 years old would not be allowed on motorcycles on public roads.

The bill would establish a brain injury trust funded by a $19 increase in registration fees for motorcycles. That would raise an estimated $1.1 million.

Hilkemann has authored nine amendments that could be used to fuel a continuing filibuster.

While opponents like Sens. Kate Bolz of Lincoln and Mike Gloor of Grand Island pointed to the costs of motorcycle injuries, supporters including Sens. Laura Ebke of Crete and Ernie Chambers of Omaha stressed individual liberty.

“Freedom is where I stand,” Sen. Mike Groene of North Platte declared. “Mind your own business.”

Fashion & lifestyle to become Rs 3,94000 crore market by 2020

Indian fashion and lifestyle market is set to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12% over the next five years to reach Rs 3,94,000 crore from the currently estimated Rs 2,21,000 crore, said an A T Kearney survey on Tuesday.

According to Debashish Mukherjee, head – consumer and retail, A T Kearney India, apparel that constitutes 57.2% pie in the overall market now will grow to 59.9% by 2020 while footwear will see a decline from 34% to 26.1% in the same period.

“Accessories market share that includes apparel accessories, bags, wallets, belts, fashion jewellery, time wear and eyewear would grow from 8.8% to 14% in the next five years,” he said at the two-day India Fashion Forum (IFF) 2016 currently on in Mumbai.

According to Mukherjee, while men’s apparel currently dominates the space, it is the women’s apparel category that is set to grow at a faster rate and will equal the men’s wear segment this year. “The fashion and lifestyle segment is witnessing a paradigm shift with women’s apparel expected to match men’s apparel at par in terms of 37% market share each in 2016. Keeping this trend in mind, the organised retailers need to pay more attention to women consumers as India is one of the few or possibly the only country where the share of men’s apparel is higher than that of women’s and that is changing,” he said.

Capturing the disruption, leading lifestyle players are able to identify the ‘white’ spaces or create new play areas in the market to carve out space for themselves. “Segments like kidswear, ethnic, that were once ‘white’ spaces, are now well penetrated by players like Gini &Jony, FabIndia, Biba, etc,” he said.

While online shopping preference by Indian consumers is clearly seen on the higher side at 62% compared to global consumers at 54%, the same is more in travel, air-ticketing and flash sale, rather than pure play online retailer, said the survey.

Retailers need to customise their brand and product offerings across different regions and city tiers. Their overall strategy for each brand needs to be reflected in the brand assortment choices made at a store level, said the survey.

Connected consumers in India have a clear preference for online shopping, says the survey, adding that this cannot be ignored anymore. While the global percentage (of respondents who prefer to shop online) stands at 54%, India’s share stands at 62%.

The survey also said that there is a strong potential for fashion brands to expand their reach and gain scale in India.

Men reluctant to get mental illness help

Posted: Yesterday 6:00 p.m. 1

In the late 1990s, I felt like the world would be better off without me. I had a good job with Mendocino Department of Transportation as heavy equipment operator and was also a volunteer firefighter and EMT. But I was struggling with untreated post traumatic stress disorder and historical trauma, conditions I spent years trying to mask by abusing drugs and alcohol until I became addicted.

I had a shotgun pointed at my head and my finger on the trigger when I called a suicide hotline. I really wanted to pull the trigger, but I also didn’t want to. Like many suicidal people, as research shows, I was looking for any reason to live, any reason for hope.

One of the first questions the operator asked me was “Do you have any weapons in the household?” I hung up right there. Having worked with law enforcement, I believed if I answered that question honestly the operator would have called 911, told them I was a “dangerous, suicidal man with a gun” and officers would show up and beat down my door.

I feared I’d lose my job and everything I worked for, so I ended up seeking help on my own. Through treatment, a little medication and my tribal ceremonies, I am celebrating my 16th year of sobriety this year. But it shouldn’t have been so hard to reach out.

Given my own personal experiences, I have found the reporting and discussion around the Boulder Creek shooting distressing and disheartening. I fear the rush to jump to conclusions and to vaguely report that Stephen Bukwich has a “mental illness,” based on one source who’s only a “friend,” is unnecessarily perpetuating stereotypes that discourage people from seeking the help they need.

By reporting Bukwich has some unidentified “mental illness,” the Record Searchlight is clearly implying that his violent behavior was directly connected to a mental health disorder. This is a very incomplete picture, and it paints all of us who have mental health challenges (more than half of us will have a diagnosable issue over the course of our lives) with one broad brush as potentially violent. There are important questions that need to be answered before such an implication can be made: What is the person’s actual diagnosis? Was he also abusing substances? What kind of treatment did he receive? What other factors in his life might have contributed to violent behavior?

The point is not to lay blame on one factor over another, but to acknowledge a violent act can have many causes. Most research indicates that having a mental illness does very little to increase the likelihood of violence, unless, perhaps, there is a co-occurring substance abuse disorder. To report otherwise is a reckless disregard for the truth.

Superficial reports also give the impression that most people with a mental health challenge are dangerous or “crazy” when the vast majority of us are just regular, peaceful folks trying to make it and be happy like everyone else. A big reason people get stuck in denial about their mental health problems, even when the symptoms are obvious, is they don’t want to be labeled as dangerous or violent like the people in the news.

That was what I faced when I was holding a shotgun to my head so many years ago.

I know that local officers receive some crisis intervention training that gives them tools to de-escalate situations involving people in a mental health crisis. Surely, there are incidents where that has helped prevent violence that we will never hear about. But, in my experience, officers receive a lot more training on how to neutralize a threat to themselves and the public as quickly as possible.

Until we really value de-escalation and invest in it, we will probably be doomed to see more incidents like this in the future. We also need to investigate what we can do differently when an armed resident is suicidal or in a crisis. I understand there is a balance with safety to acknowledge, but the status quo isn’t good enough.

And until there is change, there will continue to be many men in the position I once was: Suffering deeply in pain and fearing, whether rationally or not, if they ask for help, they’ll lose everything, even their lives.

Car plunges into Ohio River after multicar pileup on bridge

NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) — A car plunged into the Ohio River after a massive pileup on a bridge leading from Kentucky to Cincinnati, police said.

It remained unknown hours after the crash Tuesday how many people were inside when the car toppled over the side of the bridge.

Campbell County Police Chief Craig Sorrell said a total of 12 vehicles were involved in four separate accidents at rush hour on the Combs-Hehl Bridge, which carries Interstate 275 from Campbell County, Kentucky, to Cincinnati.

The accidents caused a chain reaction as other cars tried to slow down and navigate around them, he said. The vehicle, which he declined to describe, was about halfway across the bridge when it was involved in another crash, fell over the side and plunged into the river below.

Water rescue teams from multiple agencies searched for the car for hours. It was located by sonar imagining on the riverbed Tuesday night, Sorrell said.

He did not speculate on how many are believed to be dead inside.

The Boone County Water Rescue team is assessing how to first determine the number of victims inside the vehicle, then decide how to get them out of the river, Sorrell said.

Nancy Wood, a transportation cabinet spokeswoman, said the bridge will be closed for six to eight hours as investigators reconstruct the accident and what caused the car to fall into the river.

Jakarta. One person was killed and two others injured when a driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into two motorcycles on Jalan Lauser in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Saturday night (12/03), an official said.

The driver, identified as Asep Jamaludin, 24, was reportedly driving at a high speed when his car veered to the right and struck the two motorcycles at around 8:00 p.m.

One of the motorcyclists, the 30-year-old M. Pandy Permata, was killed instantly. Abdul Rojak, 46, and Putri Lestari, 24, survived the accident and were taken to the nearby Pertamina Hospital for treatment. Their condition is currently unknown.

“We have taken the driver for a urine test and the South Jakarta District Police are now investigating the case,” the South Jakarta traffic chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Doddy Ferdinand said on Saturday night.

Police have yet to reveal the test results.

Jakarta has seen several deadly crashes involving cars and motorcycles in recent months. Last month, a drunk driver collided with a motorcycle on Jalan Daan Mogot in West Jakarta, killing two people on the motorcycle and two of the car’s passengers.
