NAACP Protests Utah Man's Halloween “Lynching” Decoration

It must be Halloween again because the ghouls and goblins are back wearing racially insensitive costumes and displaying offensive scenery in their front yards.

The latest case involves Kevin Van Miltenburg of Roy, Utah, who refuses to remove a so-called animated hangman wearing a noose and gunny sack — or lynching scene — from his front yard even after the NAACP informed him that it was racially offensive, according to People Magazine.

The 24-year-old tile contractor said he had no idea anyone found his “hangman decoration racist,” the report says. For six years, residents have flocked to the community during Halloween to check out decorations at the house that he shares with his parents and wife.

“The NAACP finds the hanging character to be extremely offensive,” said Jeanetta Williams, president of NAACP’s Salt Lake Branch. “There is no doubt what this is. The founding in 1909 and history of the NAACP was because of the many lynchings in our country and has become synonymous with the lynchings of African-Americans. This display makes a mockery of the history of lynchings in our country.”

But Van Miltenburg, fired back.

“It’s sad to me that a few people are playing the race card and trying to take the fun out of Halloween,” the tile contractor tells PEOPLE. “You see hangmen every year in haunted houses and on people’s front porches. My hangman’s hands are clearly white. It’s hard to see how I’m being racist. This is all done in the spirit of Halloween.”

More and more, Halloween is becoming an excuse for people to display racial sensitivities. Enough!

Of Ants and Men: The Unexpected Side Effects of Complexity in Society (Green Energy and Technology)

Why do things go wrong? Why, despite all the planning and care in the world, do things go from bad to worse? This book argues that it is because we are like the ants. Just as ants create an anthill without being aware of it, unintended side effects of human activity create all manner of social trends and crises. The book traces the way these trends emerge and the role they play in some of the major issues of our time. One of the greatest challenges today is the complexity of our social and economic systems. Every action has side effects that people often ignore or fail to see. The book examines the ways in which limitations in our thinking and behaviour lead to unintended side effects. It looks at the role played by complex networks of interactions. Finally, it looks at the way side effects of new technologies, especially computers and communication, have created an Information Revolution, the full repercussions of which are yet to be seen. In our race to create new technologies and sustain indefinite economic growth, we are at best dimly aware of the ways in which we are transforming society and threatening our environment.

Tattoos Not Required: Police Officers Clash in Motorcycle Build Off

High Compression Garage hosts first national Police Officers Build Off Honor the Badge™, a marketing campaign for raising positive and accurate awareness for law enforcement officers, has partnered with High Compression Garage & Co™ to host the 1st National Police Officer Build Off.

Chicago, IL – October 16, 2015 – (Newswire.com)

Honor the Badge™, a marketing campaign for raising positive and accurate awareness for law enforcement officers, has partnered with High Compression Garage & Co™ to host the 1st National Police Officer Build Off.

Starting December 2015 through March 2016, two teams of officers will fully design, fabricate, and build from the ground up, two custom motorcycles alongside iconic industry experts. During the build off, the public can watch and collaborate with the Police Officers, through tweets and live streaming feeds, which will help to provide a platform for building trust and interaction. “I feel honored to be building alongside these men and women of service, it always feels good giving back,” said Tom Creal. “After what initially seemed impossible to others, we’ve broken the barrier, and I haven’t changed a bit, still pushing the limits.”

Once these two custom motorcycles are completed in May 2106 we will be riding with officers across the country entitled, The Tribute Tour.  The Tribute Tour will be a key ingredient in bringing together our awareness efforts with the public on hand. Honor the Badge & High Compression Garage will be stopping at law enforcement stations, and other community events allowing the public to view, hands on, the custom motorcycles. The final stop for the tour is Sturgis 2016 on August 8th, where these two custom motorcycles, and selected officers, will join Tom for his final show, with a big ending!

“Having many close friends who are active law enforcement officers, I couldn’t stand on the sidelines anymore,” said Tom Creal, CEO of High Compression Garage & Co. “It came down to, what can I do, and how can I do it, and then it started to take shape.”

Fashion commentary: Making statements with fall fashion shoe trends

Anna Maria Petrova, Staff Writer

On display this fall season are a variety of trendy shoes which dominate the fashion runways and stores.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, shoes, and more often than not, boots, are in for fall 2015.

Stores carrying a few of the new trendy shoes include three top department chains: Nordstrom/Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdales and DSW. The small mall boutiques include Forever 21, Charlotte Russe and H&M.

The 70s bring back the idea of trendsetting footwear styles with inspired prime textures and color play featured in boots and booties.

As the air chills, there will be a need for warmth, and wearing fur shoes can be both stylish and cozy. Fur is seen on boots of all types and sizes, sling back stiletto pumps and ironically on outdoor slippers.

Color contrast shoes can be worn with different combinations of warm shades, like black and maroon, for example. Another popular trend are gold or silver metallic shoes, with a come back that makes them shinier than ever. These tones and materials can be worn with stiletto pumps, flats and boots.

Over-the-knee and thigh high boots return in suede and leather of any hue, with a mixture of prints and different colors.

Women on the runway this season are wearing men’s fashion-inspired footwear. These generally include old-time favorites like loafers and Oxford shoes. However, the classic Mary-Janes are regaining popularity this fall in an array of shapes and colors.

Fashion can be both inspiring and fun. Wearing unique styles of clothing, accessories and shoes provides people freedom of expression, and this fall season, shoes are demonstrating the artistry of fashion.

Best 2015-2016 Green Cars for Women in Tech

LOS ANGELES, October 15, 2015 — Women in tech love cars, but what are the top environmentally-friendly vehicles to bring value and the most advanced technology you can get behind the wheel? Here’s the Best 2015-2016 Eco Cars for women in tech.

Are you considering a “green” option for your next car? Are you concerned not only about toxic pollution and rising CO2 levels, but also the resulting disastrous and deadly climate change effects as well as the violent petrol dollar?

Both the climate crisis and our gas-powered economy hit the “disenfranchised” the hardest (women, minorities, seniors and kids). One of the easiest ways to drive yourself into the green revolution is to replace your current emissions-spewing vehicle with a low or zero emissions vehicle.

What’s the EV Lifestyle?

Going electric isn’t easy. The “EV lifestyle” is a real thing. Truly, you must change the way you live your life if you decide to buy an all-electric vehicle. EVs take time to charge. Sometimes, it can take 8-12 hours to charge your EV fully on a 120-volt household outlet (also known as Level 1). Charging times shrink two fold if you plug into a 240-volt outlet (this is called Level 2 and you find these outlets usually in businesses but you can have an electrician affordably install one in your garage or apartment building). Then, there’s the Mother of All Charging. “Direct current” (DC) or “fast chargers” (also known as Level 3) are the big new thing in EV tech.

Not only do you need a completely different intake for fast charging (your EV must be equipped with one), but the charging time is shortened to an almost unbelievable 20 minutes for an 80 percent charge. Fast chargers make the EV lifestyle much more simple, but unfortunately there’s just not a lot of them around (except on the Tesla-only SuperCharger network). However you charge, driving a zero emissions car with low “fuel” costs can be thrilling, pioneering and just plain fun.

If an EV just sounds too far out of your comfort zone or not at all appealing, then your next best bet is a plug-in vehicle. These cars have both electric and internal combustion engines (otherwise known as ICE) that run off gasoline. Most plug-ins first drive off the battery stored in the electric motor for between 25-50 (the number of miles depends on your EV and other factors such as weather or driving conditions) or so miles until they almost imperceptibly switch to ICE power. While plug-ins still emit some noxious emissions, they are a good choice for those who are curious about the EV lifestyle and yet need a never-stop vehicle.

More than any other group, women want value when it comes to transportation, so how do you go green and be able to afford it? We have left the big-ticket Tesla off this list deliberately as certainly not everyone can afford the EV of All EVs. But if you are ready to drive your first electric motorized car, then the best way to try out today’s warp-speed EV technologies for yourself is to hit an auto show or a local dealership for a quick test drive.

As a green car expert, an automotive journalist, a professional road test reviewer and a #womenintech, here’s my picks for today’s best value eco cars when it comes to women and technology:

Best Overall Value & Functionality: 2015-2016 Kia Soul EV

The 2015 and now second gen 2016 Kia Soul EV is the “nearly perfect” EV. The exterior is based on Kia’s best-selling Soul model, so it looks like any other good-looking modern ride. What else makes the Soul EV most perfect is its excellent driving range (the EPA estimates 93 miles per charge). Next, the Soul EV’s interior and infotainment system is not only roomy, comfortable and ergonomic, but the huge touchscreen infotainment mated to a killer Infinity sound system makes each ride in this green car extra special indeed. Lastly, the Kia Soul EV is ready for prime time with Level 1-3 charging capacity (not to mention the charging ports are cleverly-hidden in the front grille for easy public charging). In other good news for EV enthusiasts, Kia recently reported the addition of four states to its Soul EV models for a total of 10 states including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, California, Oregon, Washington, Georgia, Texas and Hawaii.

Best Star Trek-Like Drive & Futuristic Tech: 2015 BMW i3

If you can afford to spend a lot on a car, but perhaps don’t quite have enough for a Tesla, consider BMW’s i3. This funky-looking ride is actually one of the most fun-to-drive vehicles on the road today not just for its warp-speed acceleration, but for the outrageous living room-like interior’s killer flat-screen infotainment system. Truly, the BMW i3 has the most weird and wonderful regeneration braking of all as well, which bodes well in urban driving for both ease of driving (you hardly ever need to hit the brake) and “fuel” efficiency (actually, the “hard regen” is charging your battery as you brake). Love to drive a rocket? Think i3.

Best Never-Stop Plug-In: 2016 Chevy Volt

Not everyone can afford to have two cars, so one car must do and that one car must never stop. That’s where plug-in vehicles are best and GM’s 2016 Chevy Volt is one of the best and most affordable plug-ins on the roads today. GM made a big deal out of its 2016 Volt launch and for good reason: This now even better-looking sedan goes an EPA-estimated 53 miles on a full electric charge (or 420 miles with a fully-charged battery and a full gas tank), has five seats and the revamped sleek exterior has thankfully lost its weirdness.

Best Eco Lineup: Ford

Ford was late to the electric game, but has committed to a four-pronged approach to lowering emissions: 1) eco boost (turbocharged gas engines), hybrids (electric and gas engine with no charging necessary), plug-ins (electric charging plus gas engine) and all-electrics (full EVs). Henry Ford was a pioneer in electric engine technology way back when and Ford’s eco engineers have not disappointed their founder. Ford’s 2015 and 2016 model year “electrics” – including the compact Focus Electric and highly utilitarian C-MAX Energi hatchback  – are all literally built Ford tough and with loads of standard equipment including Ford’s proprietary Sync3 infotainment soft and hardware.

Best EV Hatch: 2015 Volkswagen Golf EV & 2016 Highlights

Despite Volkswagen’s woes over its “clean diesel” scandal, the YEAR VW e-Golf was named 2015 North American Car of the Year for a reason. Like Kia Soul EV, the eGolf was fit inside an already best-selling urban family-friendly ride. eGolf’s thousands of enthusiasts are not fettered at all by the scandal, but announce proudly the went radical with Volkswagen’s first-and-only EV rather than a now scandalous “clean” diesel model. The VW eGolf is truly a compact EV worth the look. VW interiors are always uber masculine and minimalist, however, they work for women in their simplicity and utilitarianism. In August, VW announced some 2016 model year highlights, which mostly include tech upgrades such as VW’s new MIB II infotainment system with its own “VW Car-Net App Connect” and three other available “connected car systems”: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.

2015-EGolf

Best at Charging & Range: 2015-2016 Nissan Leaf

With so many cool new EVs on today’s car market, the original pioneer production EV, Nissan Leaf, can get neglected. In fact, Nissan’s Leaf has led all EV sales worldwide by selling 170,000 cars since 2010. But the big news in EV tech is how Nissan’s engineers broke the 100 mile mark by getting an EPA-estimated miles per full charge on its 2016 Leaf. In addition, Nissan’s Leaf just charges faster than most other EVs. And while the Leaf’s wonky exterior may not be for everyone, the minimalist modern interior is comfortable, roomy, soothing and full of cool tech.

Best Tiny EV: 2015-2016 Chevy Spark EV

Urban women most especially find driving a tiny car is a value in and of itself when it comes to parking in tight spaces and saving money on high fuel prices. Who wouldn’t love nabbing those hard-to-fit parking spaces and never stopping at a gas station ever again? Plus, the 2016 Chevy Spark EV gets an EPA-estimated 82 miles of driving range and the price has recently been reduced. This super cute all-electric mini hatch is not only designed to look good outside, but the interior is cool too with ergonomic comfort, easy-on-the-eye design and awesome infotainment tech. When fully charged, Chevy claims its new and slightly improved 2016 Spark EV gets an EPA-estimated 82 miles of driving range (that translates to 119 MPGe), which makes it one of the USA’s most efficient EVs on the roads today.

Best Luxury EV That’s Not Tesla: 2016 Cadillac ELR

If you can’t quite afford a Tesla and can’t stand the look of BMWs i3, then check out Cadillac’s 2016 ELR. Like Chevy’s Volt, Caddy’s second gen 2016 ELR is a plug-in vehicle, which means that it runs on an advanced electric motor and then kicks into a gas-powered 1.4-liter engine for a total of around 330 miles. While the ELR may not have the best stats when it comes to fuel efficiency, you sure can’t knock its star quality. The ELR’s exterior is race-car cool and will have heads turning all over town. The spaceship-like interior is beyond techie and makes you smile each time you sit down for another smooth ride in this warp-speed wonder car (0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds).

It isn’t easy to change and certainly the EV lifestyle isn’t for everyone. And there’s a lot more to be discussed about buying EVs, including potential local, state and federal tax refunds as well as time- and money-saving carpool and parking privileges. But if you are prepared to be a pioneering woman when it comes to your car, these top eco cars are fun to drive and own.

Cancer screening - An important component of men's health

Screening should be a part of everyone’s health care regimen. Men, specially, should not overlook three important screening tests.

“Men who are 50 and older should discuss prostate cancer screening with their physician,” said Dr. Veerpal Singh, who practices Hematology and Oncology at Illinois Cancer Specialists of Foxvalley. Most physicians recommend an annual “PSA” test which is a protein in the blood at age 50, Singh explained.

“If the results are abnormal, the test usually needs to be repeated,” said Singh. “Elevated PSA level will prompt a referral to the urologist for cancer workup” he added. A normal PSA reading doesn’t always rule out cancer, however, which is why doctors also examine the prostate for irregularities in size, shape or texture.

Screening for colon cancer includes checking for blood in the stools by a test called the “fecal occult blood test” at age 50 and over by your physician. Also, a colonoscopy by a specialist is recommended for everyone over 50. However, Singh explained, “If you or your immediate family members have had cancer before 50, you don’t have to wait until you’re 50 to get screened.”

Lung cancer screening is as important, especially among smokers. The American College of Chest Physicians recommends a CT scan for males aged 55-79 with a 30 pack year smoking history who are current smokers or quit within the last 15 years. One pack year equals one pack a day for a year.

“Men over 50 with a 20 pack year smoking history and any additional risk factors should be screened,” he added. A risk factor could be history of cancer, lung disease, family history of lung cancer, radon exposure or occupational exposure.

All three screening tests are covered by Medicare and other insurances.

“I always urge my patients to start an early, age-appropriate cancer screening discussion with their primary physician, depending on different parameters that include age, sex and risk factors.” said Singh.

Farmer: Man's hubris takes toll on natural world

A recent trip to Australia provided me with the opportunity to swim with giant manta rays, walk among ancient cycads and towering pines and gaze across majestic gorges carved through rocks that once lay at the bottom of a great sea.

As I marveled at these wondrous sights, a sense of melancholy fell over me. Despite the power these wonders have to connect us to the natural world, I knew that in living memory there had been a different world. A world I had not seen. A world that my children will never see. A world that will never be seen again.

I know this because we humans like to record things. From the exquisite Lascaux cave paintings of now-extinct aurochs in France to the grainy photograph of Australian farmer Wilf Batty proudly posing with the last wild Tasmanian tiger, our species has a unique ability to carefully document our conquests over nature.

More than this, we suffer from the inexcusable hubris that among all of the creatures we share the planet with, we alone know what is right. That somehow, three and a half billion years of biological evolution has gotten it all wrong. That the Garden of Eden described in the book of Genesis was imperfect until we came along and decimated the forests, strained the seas of life, stole the grass for our cattle and sheep, and murdered all those who got in our way.

The Tasmanian tiger, more properly known as the thylacine, was a marsupial apex predator about the size of a dog. The last one died of neglect a little more than 80 years ago in an Australian zoo, but an Australian government eradication policy had doomed the thylacine to extinction long before then. In the mistaken belief that these beautiful creatures posed a threat to ranchers, a bounty was paid for every thylacine killed. Our relentless encroachment on their land, the introduction of our dogs and diseases, and our careless disregard to be faithful stewards of the Earth ultimately sealed their fate.

As I stood looking down at one of three Tasmanian devils held in captivity in a Brisbane zoo. I wondered if I, too, might be bearing witness to the extinction of a species. Like their cousins the thylacines, Tasmanian devils were mistakenly thought to pose a threat to livestock and were relentlessly hunted down. Today they survive only in a few places. Despite our recent efforts to protect them, their fate may soon be sealed by a unique facial cancer that is spread via bites inflicted as they vie for space and the dwindling prey on which they depend for survival.

Standing in Lamington National Park, I listened to the intricate song of an Albert’s lyrebird calling for a mate. At that moment, I was reminded of a Greek proverb: “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

One hundred years ago, in 1915, a handful of loggers realized that they were on the verge of cutting down the last of the ancient trees. Because Queensland, Australia, has never been covered with glaciers, these forests are among the oldest on earth. They contain giant tree ferns and mosses that remain unchanged since the time before dinosaurs. Knowing full well that it meant an end to their livelihoods, these loggers none the less petitioned the government to have these forests set aside for posterity. The only reason I could behold these wonders, and the only reason my children and grandchildren can hope to marvel at these things for themselves, is because old men had the wisdom to plant trees — or at least not cut them down.

In a few weeks’ time, world leaders will gather in Paris to discuss the fate of our planet. The United Nations Climate Change Conference has the goal of creating a plan whereby humanity can coexist with, and benefit from, the natural world. I pray that these men and women will have the wisdom of those Australian loggers and that our leaders will have the moral strength to put their plans into action.

A Chinese proverb is worth remembering: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.”

Mark Farmer is a professor of cellular biology at the University of Georgia.

Riders Protest French Ban On Pre-2000 Motorcycles

Can you imagine if the US government banned at pre-2000 motorcycles from being registered or ridden here in Ameirca? That is what some politicians in France want to do.

Tens of thousands of riders protested in multiple cities throughout France, expressing their disapproval of the new regulation that restricts access of bikes and scooters deemed as being “old” in large areas of Paris and other large French cities.

Paris riders are the most affected, so it’s easy to understand that the biggest crowds gathered in the capital. It goes without saying that Paris, being the country’s capital and largest city, also hosts the most riders, hence the higher number of riders affected by Mayor Hidalgo’s ban.

The FFMC (Federation Francaise des Motards en Colere, French for French Federation of Angry/Pissed Off Motorcyclists) reports that around 15,000 riders on 10,0000 bikes assembled last Saturday in Ile-de-France and set out for Le Peripherique, or the outer ring road around 3 pm to block the road.

How much these protests will help change the current situation is hard to predict. In the absence of interest from popular media, these protests might have little impact, despite riders in so many French cities responded FFMC’s call to action.

Stubborn as we know the FFMC, we can estimate that such actions will be repeated, aiming to draw attention from the press at a higher level.

Pre-2000 bikes banned, more to follow
This motorcycle ban is not exactly new, and we reported on multiple occasions about how things evolved. In an effort to curb air pollution in the city, Paris’ Mayor Anne Hidalgo sought to restrict the circulation of bikes registered before 2000 in major areas of the French capital between 8 am and 8 pm.

Still, these seem to be only the first restrictions Mme. Hidalgo has in plan, with harsher bans to be enforced. If the FFMC manage to draw enough attention from major media outlets, maybe there is a way to put an end to this silly ban.

We wonder how many diesel VW cars are out on Paris’ streets each day… just wondering…

The NBA continues to send a bad message with its specialized fashion for women

Are “specialized” women’s apparel options in the NBA keeping up with social changes such as women in coaching positions?

Rebecca (@beccaaftersix):

Kate, you wrote a really awesome op-ed last year about the message teams are sending with their options for women’s wear. I was hoping the NBA (or the Mavericks) would get a hold of it, but alas, here’s the Mavs’ new “fashion” line this year.

It’s somehow even worse than the options last year! I mean….hot pink with fringe and leopard print? Are the Mavs changing their team colors and forgot to let us know!?

For all the progress that women have made in making themselves part of mainstream sports fandom and sports reporting — and it’s still very much a work in progress, considering that a couple of female reporters were recently shut out of a NFL locker room — I still have a hard time finding basic, simple apparel to represent my fandom that doesn’t have rhinestones on it without going to the men’s sections of most websites.

I can find things I like here and there, don’t get me wrong — but mostly it’s frustrating. The message I’m getting with this new women’s line is that I need to dress like a Hot Topic employee, be arm candy, and leave the “serious” sports fandom to the men.

Kate (@crawfordkate):

I like your theory that the Mavs just forgot to send us the color change memo. Chandler Parsons could totally pull off hot pink and leopard print!

But you’re right, it’s astounding that the NBA still makes it so difficult for its female fans to fully and authentically experience fandom. I find this doubly frustrating because the league office has consistently earned high praise for its commitment to gender diversity in its hiring, and we’ve even started to see that on a team level in the hiring of Becky Hammon and Nancy Lieberman.

When we wrote about this last year, a lot of the pushback focused on the idea that this isn’t a moral issue but a marketing one. And it is true that the NBA core audience is very male and very young and that the league is catering to these viewers with its apparel marketing strategy.

But while women may be “only” 30 percent of the NBA fan base, the base is enormous! These guys can’t possibly believe that more than five million female fans are interested in pink fringe tees and bad engagement ring jokes, right? We’re willing to buy tickets and pay whatever exorbitant League Pass price they want to charge…do they really not want more of us buying t-shirts, too?

Rebecca:

I can appreciate the marketing argument on some levels, if I’m being honest. I’m sure (I hope) the NBA has some research that indicates women want to (and do) buy the glitter and lace version of a shirt over a more “traditional” design, or they wouldn’t keep marketing them.

It does present an odd dichotomy though. To your point, it really is wonderful to see the NBA on the leading edge of welcoming women into the coaching ranks, and putting women like Doris Burke front and center as part of their in-game commentary. On the other hand, I had my first real brush with a couple of violent male fans in the playoffs last year, publicly calling me some pretty awful names I don’t think they would have directed at a guy, for just doing my editing job on the blog.

So it’s baffling to me, as a serious female sports fan, why the league can’t catch its marketing up a little bit. In my opinion, things like this fashion line reinforce and even celebrate stereotypes that women can’t have serious conversations about sports. That 30 percent of the fanbase has value! And I don’t mind them having some more “fun” options for women who do like a pink “I Heart Mavs” shirt, but I’d rather top off my skinny jeans and patent flats with a slim fit traditional logo tee in team colors (without having to dig to the depths of the internet to find it), and I can’t believe you and I are alone on that.

What do you think could finally shift the tide to seeing the marketing catch up to the real world progress here?

Kate:

I really don’t know. But maybe all of our complaining about this is starting to have some impact. To its credit, the NBA store homepage does look better than it did last season. It doesn’t label the mens’ section as being for “serious fans” and the featured collection is so much better than the Alyssa Milano line they were really pushing a year ago (I’m not sure I’ll ever understand why Alyssa Milano became the go-to celebrity sports apparel designer).

I think one thing that might help would be to work with real designers. I don’t know how successful it was, but I’d love to see more collaborations like the Rachel Roy and Amar’e Stoudemire line from a few years ago.

It may not be to everyone’s taste, but I really appreciated that you could show up to a game in almost anything from that line and look like an actual fan (wearing the team’s real colors even!) without resorting to clothing designed for men. But I think it’s telling that they only made these for five teams: the Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Knicks, and Heat (where LeBron played at the time). They were obviously targeting more casual fans who liked to support big market or high-profile teams.

So maybe the NBA (and the Mavericks) just need to hear more from fans like us. My go-to outfit for watching the game at home is a logo tee, my fanciest sweatpants, and matching lipstick (I live in DC and am also a Wizards fan):

So what do you end up wearing for game day, Rebecca?

Rebecca:

I do like the idea of working with real designers. I would buy the crap out of that Rachel Roy collection stuff if there was a Mavericks version, and probably be willing to pay a small premium for the label even. The Touch collection stuff just tends to be a little TOO far on the “girly” extreme for me, no offense to Alyssa Milano. But the “Classics” gear on the NBA Store site does comes closer to hitting the mark than I’ve seen in recent years, you’re right. (I am eyeing this hoodie in the men’s section though, and wishing it came in women’s sizing. Also holding my breath that these fancy new Stance socks will have a women’s option!)

And since you asked – my game day look isn’t too dissimilar from yours: some soft lounge pants, a tank top and this shockingly normal(!) and in team colors(!) slouchy logo tee that I managed to find buried on a rack at the team store a couple years back:

And what about the rest of you ladies who aren’t into rhinestones and leopard print (at least when it comes to your team)? What does your game day outfit look like, and what would you like to see more of as women’s sports fashion hopefully starts progressing the way the league is with women in other ways?

The NBA continues to send a bad message with its specialized fashion for women

Car Exports From India Decline Marginally in First Half of FY16

New Delhi: Car exports from India declined marginally to 2,67,043 units in the first six months of the current fiscal due to challenges in various markets including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

India had exported 2,68,863 units in the same period of last fiscal, 2014-15.

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM), during April-September, 2015-16, the largest car exporter from the country Hyundai Motor India saw 13.91 per cent drop in car exports to 83,522 units from 97,021 units in April-September period of 2014-15.

On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki India’s (MSI) exports during the period rose by 6.34 per cent to 61,202 cars compared to 57,552 units in same period of previous fiscal.

Japanese car maker Nissan’s exports also declined 3.64 per cent to 53,704 units in April-September period this fiscal from 55,634 units earlier.

Explaining the reasons for decline in exports, SIAM Deputy Director General Sugato Sen told PTI: “There has been a slowdown in some of the export markets and incentives for shipping vehicles to focussed markets like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have been withdrawn.”

As per the foreign policy document, export incentives have been curtailed on passenger cars, commercial vehicles and two wheelers, it said.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, however, saw exports of its passenger cars rise 10.11 per cent to 8,962 units, while Volkswagen posted 12.11 per cent increase in shipments to 36,145 cars during the April-September period.

Companies like General Motors India, which have not previously given importance to exports from India, has now started shipping to overseas markets. It exported 3,180 units during the period as against 156 units last year. The company today announced that it is shipping the first 3,000 left-hand-drive Chevrolet Beats to Mexico.

Another American car maker Ford also saw its exports from India rising to 15,142 units as against 13,717 units in the same period last fiscal.

Domestic car sales in India during the April-September period of current fiscal rose by 9.68 per cent to 9,77,037 units as compared to 8,90,843 units in the same period of 2014-15.

The NIBTS has stopped 30 men from donating blood at their clinics since 2011 after they said they had sexual contact with other men

Thirty men have been stopped from donating blood at clinics in Northern Ireland because they have had sexual contact with another man, a BBC investigation has found.

Elsewhere in the UK, there is a one-year deferral period for men who have had sex with men (MSM) to donate.

Northern Ireland has an outright ban.

But a judge ruled that former health minister Edwin Poots did not have the power to retain that ban. His ruling will be appealed in court later.

In the Northern Ireland Appeal Court on Monday, the current on-off health minister, the Democratic Unionist Party’s (DUP) Simon Hamilton, is appealing the judgement, alongside Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

They shall be asking who is in charge of blood policy and whether or not this is a devolved issue. The appeal is expected to last four days.

Screened

Following a Freedom of Information request, BBC News NI has seen emails sent between Northern Ireland’s Department of Health and the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service (NIBTS), which is responsible for the collection, testing and distribution of blood.

The NIBTS also said it had stopped 30 men from donating blood at their clinics since 2011 after they informed staff that they had sexual contact with other men.

The BBC asked the NIBTS how confident it would be that its blood is screened correctly and that it would be safe for MSM to donate after the one-year deferral period.

It said: “All blood donations are subjected to the testing regimes required by the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005.

“As such, NIBTS is confident that all blood samples are screened correctly.”

Direction

The BBC has also seen instructions sent to the NIBTS from Dr Elizabeth Mitchell, the deputy chief medical officer, instructing the organisation how to respond if approached by the media about the ban remaining in place.

Dr Kieran Morris, the former chief executive of the NIBTS, replied showing some concern about the process and how he would answer questions from his own staff.

“As chief executive officer and accountable officer for the NIBTS special agency service, I require from the Department of Health a written direction, giving me a clear line as to how we manage and control the situation,” he said.

“There is no doubt in my mind that referring all matters to the Department of Health press office will not be sustainable for more than a few days.”

Edwin Poots, the former health minister, said he kept the ban on the basis of ensuring public safety

A BBC investigation earlier this year found the Department of Health does not have any medical evidence of its own to support a permanent ban on gay men donating blood.

The ban was put in place across the UK during the Aids crisis of the 1980s, but was lifted in England, Scotland and Wales in November 2011.

Irrational

New rules were introduced that allowed blood donations from men whose last sexual contact with another man was more than a year earlier.

But Northern Ireland did not follow suit.

A gay man, granted anonymity due to his perceived vulnerability, launched a judicial review challenge over then health minister Edwin Poots’s decision not to adopt the same policy on this side of the Irish Sea.

A judge ruled that Mr Poots’ decision was “irrational” and “infected with apparent bias”.

Mr Poots said he had kept the ban on the basis of ensuring public safety.

In April, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that a lifetime ban may be justified in member states if no effective detection techniques exist within the country.

Devolved

The ECJ said countries must establish if such donors were at high risk of acquiring infectious diseases like HIV.

Mr Hamilton said he would study the ruling.

A number of issues will be looked at in the Court of Appeal, including whether blood policy should be a devolved matter.

The appeal is expected to last for four days.

The NIBTS did not respond to the BBC to give an additional comment.

A Department of Health spokesman said: “It would not be appropriate at this stage to comment on matters that are before the courts.”

Legacy Way: First traffic figures to be released Monday

The first accurate traffic figures for Brisbane’s $1.5 billion Legacy Way toll-tunnel will be released to the Australian Stock Exchange by tunnel operator, Transurban on Monday morning.

Those traffic figures will then be released to the public after Transurban holds its annual general meeting, also on Monday.

It will be the first time the public can view how motorists have judged the efficiency of the toll-tunnel since it opened on June 25, 2015 under its early toll figures.

Brisbane’s Legacy Way tunnel – built by the TransCity Consortia for Brisbane City Council – runs between the Toowong Roundabout and the Inner City Bypass at Bowen Hills.

Brisbane City Council estimated between 16,700 and 24,000 trip (in both directions) would use the tunnel in the first year.

Police in August this year unofficially estimated around 14,000 trips made per day, although they conceded their estimate did not count every vehicle.

Transurban – an ASX-listed company – declined to comment before their figures were released to the Australian Stock Exchange.

RACQ’s executive director Paul Turner said their anecdotal information – and information from Brisbane City Council – was the tunnel was improving traffic flow on Milton Road.

“We think Legacy Way is operating efficiently, we have not had any negative feedback from our members around it,” he said.

Mr Turner conceded the RACQ – as a motorists’ lobby – had been critical of toll-roads in the past

“We are not critical per-se of tolls,” Mr Turner said.

“We understand that infrastructure has to be funded,” he said.

“But what we have seen in tunnels like the Clem 7 is that they are grossly under-utilised and they could carry two or three times the traffic.”

“And all that means is that we are not getting the benefit.”

“So we hope that Legacy Way is successful, because that means we will get the benefit with the reduced congestion on the surrounding roads.”

This first set of accurate traffic figures is based on the initial tolls, which remain in place until November 15.

Until then cars pay $3 per trip, motorcycles pay $1.50 and light commercial vans pay $5.50.

After November 15 and up until May 2, 2016 the tolls will increase for cars to $3.90; for motorcycles to $1.95 and light commercial vehicles to $7.28.

Full tolls for Legacy Way come into effect after May 2, 2016.

The full tolls are $2.43 for motorcycles; $4.85 for cars and $7.28 for light commercial vans.

The $1.5 billion Legacy Way tunnel is the third toll tunnel built in Brisbane after the Clem 7 and the Airport Link tunnels, although it was financed differently to the two previous toll-tunnel projects.

Legacy Way is funded directly by local and federal governments ($500 million) with the Queensland Government providing “in-kind” support.

Brisbane’s Toll Tunnel

Both the much larger $3.2 billion Clem 7 tunnel (2010) – Wolloongabba to Bowen Hills – and $4.8 billion Airport Link tunnel (2012) – Bowen Hills to Toombul – raised money from private investors and investment banks.

Clem 7’s operator RiverCity Motorways went into receivership four years ago – in February 2011 with $1.3 billion in debt.

It was then bought by Queensland Motorways (September 2013), which was in turn bought by Transurban in April 2014.

BrisConnections’ massive $4.8 billion Airport Link tunnel opened in July 2012, but went into liquidation on February 19, 2013.

BrisConnections receivers in August announced plans to sell the motorway.

Opening bids for the Airport Link tunnel began in September and the sale process would continue until early 2016, tunnel administrators, McGrathNicol said in August 2015.

BrisConnections ran into trouble after tunnel use fell well short of forecasts of 135,000 trips a day.

There were only 47,802 using the 6.7 kilometre tunnel when it went into administration and that number had only increased to 51,577 by the second quarter of 2015.
