Mission Motorcycles Files For Bankruptcy

Mission One, ca 2009

Mission One, ca 2009

As reports come in of the Chapter 7 (liquidation of assets) bankruptcy of Mission Motorcycles (AKA Mission Electric), it would appear that the Mission story has come to a close, and our fears of a few months ago were on target.

The story in NorthJersey.com (Mission was co-founded by Fort Lee resident Vincent Ip) reports that Mark Seeger, Mission’s CEO filed a letter with the court claiming the company had “so little money it can’t afford an attorney”, and the situation was a result of the 2013 lawsuits resulting from the termination of Ip:

Seeger’s letter about the company’s troubles was filed in connection with a pair of suits involving Ip. Mission Motorcycles filed a suit in December 2013 claiming Ip signed a stock restriction agreement that allowed the company to buy his shares if he left the company. The company terminated Ip in November 2013.

Ip, in a counter-suit filed in February, says he was duped into signing the agreement by Seeger.

The court in May ruled that Mission Motorcycles’ attorney, Lowenstein Sandler of Roseland, could withdraw from the case because Mission Motorcycle was not paying its bills. And Seeger, in his letter, said he had not found a replacement by the court-imposed deadline last month because of the company’s woes.

“I have struggled to rescue the business to find a buyer for the assets,” without success, he wrote. He added that “to date, we have not earned any cash/revenue of any kind,” and had no funds to hire an attorney.

Just to keep to form in the Mission story, this isn’t as clear-cut as it may appear.  No filing is on the docket with the court (as of Tuesday) the NorthJersey.com report states, and there’s no guarantee that this will protect Seeger from Ip’s countersuit:

Lisa Solbakken, a New York attorney for Ip, said that even if a Chapter 7 filing stayed the case against Mission Motorcycles, Ip would continue it against Seeger individually, and Lowenstein Sandler, which is also a defendant.

“Our complaint alleges that Mr. Seeger sought to benefit himself personally,” Solbakken said. “Without knowing the facts to Mission’s finances, which to date have been undisclosed to us, we can’t comment, even to the veracity of his claim that the company has no money.”

This is pretty certainly shutting the door on the Mission R and RS production, however the legal melodrama which was in all likelihood the main contributing factor to the company’s troubles is far from over for Ip and Seeger.

While the Mission R and RS held huge promise, and inspired more than a few to make deposits (which by all appearances are lost, at this point), it became clear within the last few years that the bikes were, while languishing in legal and marketing purgatory, fast becoming outdated by products like the Energica – already being distributed in Europe, soon to come to the US, and with similar performance.

Few fashion houses like to poke fun at themselves. Then again, few fashion houses actually have a sense of humour. Hermès is different. Alongside its horse-harness heritage, the French leather brand has always taken a tongue-in-cheek approach to fashion. This September sees the launch of its website Le Manifeste de Hermès, wholly devoted to the Hermès man. Designed with curiosity, creativity and entertainment in mind, the interactive videos include ‘How to master the art of building a sandcastle’, ‘A guide to writing Surrealist poetry’ and even a game of my old favourite, ‘Guess what’s in the X-rayed bag’.

All the protagonists in the videos are dressed top-to-toe in Hermès (naturally) and their wardrobes are shoppable through the online store. If Hermès continues to come up with this sort of humorous and creative content, it’ll be laughing all the way to the bank.

If Fashion Methodology were a degree, there would be a whole module on Dressing. Some start with the shoes, some with the suit, while others always begin with accessories. If you fall into the last category, Opumo, offering every accessory a man could desire, is the site for you. Standout pieces include TID watches, from £189

Oki-ni

Oki-ni (pronounced okey-knee), offering a mixture of well-known high-end brands, hard-to-find labels and design stars of the future, is the fashion pack’s go-to for online shopping. A little imagination is needed as its on-site styling is at times painfully cool. The outlet store (also online) is worth checking out too.

The Idle Man

When it comes to casual dressing, Mr Monday-to-Friday largely sticks to some sort of uniform, while Mr Saturday-and-Sunday is allowed to run wild, often disastrously. Luckily, help is at hand in the form of The Idle Man. Founded by Asos’s ex-head of men’s brands Oliver Tezcan and with former Selfridges and Topman buyer Thom Scherdel at the helm, they know a thing or two about weekend-wear, and stock 87 carefully chosen brands covering ready-to-wear, footwear and accessories.

Très Bien

As trends in men’s and womenswear have recently focused largely on minimalism, we Brits often turn to the Nordics for effortless, stripped-back style. So look no further than the Swedish-based e-store Très Bien for a selection of international brands alongside their eponymous label. Nearly everything on the site could be easily integrated into the everyman’s wardrobe.

10 Ways to Keep Your Car Insurance Rates Cheap

Photo: Jay-P, Flickr

As far as budget items go, car insurance is a significant cost for most Americans, and a shockingly steep one for some. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to keep your car insurance rates cheap — or at least cheaper than they otherwise might be.

First, though, just how costly is car insurance? Well, according to a 2015 report by the American Automobile Association, the average annual cost for a low-risk driver with an excellent driving record is about $1,115, up $92, or 9%, over last year’s rate. That’s $93 per month — for a best-case-scenario driver. How bad does it get for higher-risk drivers, and/or those with less stellar driving records? Well, according to a study by CarInsurance.com, the average annual car insurance rate for one ZIP code in Detroit is $5,109 — ironically, it’s a ZIP code where the median annual household income is $29,000. In Brooklyn, one zip code sports an average of $3,877. Plenty of ZIP codes across America have average rates topping $2,000, and some states, such as California, Florida, New Jersey, Texas, and Montana, have average rates topping $1,500, per a study by Insure.com. (NYSE: HRB  )

Below is a list of lots of ways that drivers in America achieve lower car insurance rates. See which of them you might adopt. Some, such as your age, are not too negotiable, but others are.

Photo: Mark Turnauckas, Flickr.

Be a good driver. A single accident can send your rates up significantly — by as much as 41%, on average, for a $2,000 claim, per one report. Drivers with clean records get offered much better rates. This means avoiding not only accidents, but also speeding tickets, DWI offenses, and more. If you happen to have an incident on your driving record, know that it won’t be there forever. Its effect will likely be reduced in your premiums and it might not make any difference at all after a few years.

Live in a safer neighborhood. As those ZIP code averages above reveal, where you live, drive, and park can make a big difference in your rates. You’re probably not going to pack up and move just because of this, but if you’re in the market for a new home, perhaps take a few minutes to check out rates in your possible new stomping grounds.

Maintain a good credit rating. In most states, insurers can, and typically do, consider your credit rating when determining what they’ll charge you. According  to the folks at Insurance.com, if your rating is only “fair,” you can expect a rate that’s 17% higher than what someone with an excellent rating will get, while a “poor” rating will send your rate up by an average of 67%! If your credit rating could use some improvement, know that you can improve it – by paying bills on time, paying down debt, and so on. Steep car insurance rates don’t have to last forever.

Be not too young and not too old. Not surprisingly, teens, who are new drivers, face costly rates, as do many older drivers, whose reflexes have slowed down and who might have poor vision, as well. (I know. Not too much you can do about this one.)

Fancy cars cost more to insure. Photo: LadyDragonflyCC, Flickr.

Drive a car that’s not costly to insure. All cars are not created equal in the eyes of insurance companies. Do a little Googling, and you’ll find lists of the most costly and least costly vehicles to insure, and lists of the safest and least safe vehicles. Insurers favor safer cars and are likely to charge higher rates for cars that are associated with more claims and less-than-stellar drivers. Cars with a lot of safety features will be favored, while expensive cars will cost you more. According  to Insure.com, among 2015 models, the least expensive cars to insure include the Jeep Wrangler Sport 4WD, the Honda CR-V LX 4WD, the Dodge Grand Caravan SE Plus, and the Honda Odyssey LX, each averaging less than $1,165. Among the most expensive to insure are the Nissan GT-R Nismo, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Convertible, the Dodge SRT Viper, and the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, with each averaging at least $3,200. Here’s another tip: Reconsider any plans to fancify your car with a custom paint job, spoilers, custom wheels, or a pricey stereo system. If you don’t inform your insurer about any such changes, you won’t be covered for any additional value, but informing your insurer can also lead to higher rates.

Drive less. If you become a telecommuter and are driving much less now, let your insurer know, as your rate might drop. The fewer miles you drive, the less risk you present for an insurer.

Raise your deductible. Up it from $200 to $500 and you can save up to 30%. Raise it to $1,000, and you can save even more.

Keep your car longer. This is a no-brainer. If you tend to replace your car every few years, you’re keeping your rates on the steep side. Older cars can be far less costly to insure, and after a certain point you might just drop your collision coverage entirely, saving even more.

Have family members with good records and non-fancy cars, too. If your spouse or a driving teen in the household has a poor driving record or a bad credit rating or an expensive sports car, you’re likely to face higher car insurance rates, even if you’re a great driver with a 10-year-old Toyota. (By the way, being married  is likely to result in a lower car insurance rate, as married folks tend to be in fewer accidents.)

Shop around. Don’t just stick with your same old insurer, even if you’re receiving a “loyalty” discount. Spend an hour on the phone with a few competitors and compare apples to apples, specifying exactly what coverage you have and seeing what they would charge you. You might be surprised. Give special consideration to any insurer you already have a policy with, as multiple policies can yield discounts.

Your car insurance rates will rarely seem cheap, but there are steps you can take to get them a lot lower.

Is Masturbation Good For You? Self-Love May Alleviate Everything From Menstrual Cramps To The ...

Masturbation continues to be a sex taboo despite the hypersexual climate we live in. Whether you whack your weed or polish the pearl, you’ve probably heard rumors that it’s unhealthy and can even cause blindness and infertility, but can some self-love actually be good for your health? In AsapSCIENCE’s video, “Is Masturbation Good For You?” hosts Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brown, alongside Rachel Salt, explain there are many benefits to reap from feeling ourselves, from reducing menstrual cramps to reducing cancer.

Most men and women masturbate in their lives, with 95 percent of men and around 72 percent of women admitting it, according to AsapSCIENCE. Contrary to popular belief, masturbation is not for single people. Seventy percent of men and 40 percent of women in relationships reported masturbating within the four weeks leading up to a recent survey. Self-love can boost the health of men and women, even lending a helping hand in the bedroom.

For example, endorphins released during an orgasm can decrease our perception of pain, especially reducing menstrual cramping for women. With the help of the hormone prolactin, which is linked to sleep, women are more likely to feel exhausted and get a good night’s sleep.

Meanwhile, men can also benefit from masturbating by reducing the occurrence of a cold and the risk of prostate cancer. A study found components of the immune system are activated during masturbation, increasing the number of white blood cells in the bloodstream. Male solo sessions might also help reduce prostate cancer due to high ejaculation frequency. Researchers hypothesize that increased ejaculation means potential carcinogenic secretions in the prostate excreted more regularly, decreasing their negative impact on the body.

Masturbation can do more than boost your health, it can also give you a helping hand in the bedroom. Stroking the penis or clitoris can activate the bulbocavernosis reflex, resulting in pelvic muscles contracting. This is basically a workout for your sex muscles. Masturbation can help maintain nitric oxide levels (known to diminish with age) in your blood throughout your life.

Authorities: Man crashes motorcycle, dies after fleeing from deputies

A man on a motorcycle died after crashing into some trees Thursday night a short while after deputies attempted to stop him for running a stop sign, according to authorities.

Two Hall County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies on Dahlonega Highway spotted the man running a stop sign around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to authorities.

“The deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop when the motorcycle failed to yield,” wrote Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Deputy Nicole Bailes in an email. “It is our policy to not chase motorcycles, so the deputies canceled their efforts to stop the motorcycle.”

Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Richard Harper said the motorcyclist attempted to negotiate a curve and failed to stay in his lane on Dahlonega Highway at Kenimer Road.

“About 15 minutes later, the crash (call) came out,” Harper said.

The driver went off the road and struck two trees, Harper said. No other vehicles were involved.

The motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Harper said.

The name of the driver was not known by Bailes nor Harper.

They do a lot of good with that giant piece of machinery. They are taking their brand and doing something charitable with it wherever they go.”

Back in the day, cars said something about your history and your background, according to Al Herder.

“We grew up in an era where your car defined you and your style,” Herder said.

In their 47 years of marriage, Herder and his wife Judy have owned more than 70 cars, because she’s a car lover — a “car chick” — as much as he is.

“We love cars,” Herder said simply. “We don’t have a motor home, a camper, a boat; our hobby is our cars.”

Al and Judy, are bringing three classic cars to the Goodguys Colorado Nationals car show this weekend at The Ranch.

The Goodguys event moved from June to September this year because organizers felt that September was a better event month, out of the busy car season but still with great weather. When the event originally started 18 years ago at the Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, it was always in September, according to Betsy Bennett, one of the coordinators of the Goodguys event. Ten years ago, the event moved to The Ranch on a new date.

“We have the same event footprint,” she said. “Autocross all three days, vendor exhibits, the swap meets, Nitro Thunderfest; there are a lot of different things to see and do.”

She said that there are many car shows that take place throughout the year in the Northern Colorado area, but she hopes the Goodguys National experience brings another flavor and different features to the area.

Each one of the cars that Al and Judy Herder will bring has sentimental value for the pair.

1970 Plymouth HemiCuda Convertible

In the late 1970s the pair did a search for a nice car to collect. They found a 1971 Barracuda convertible that was in pieces. The couple had it repainted and worked on it over time. Their children remember getting ice cream in that car and playing Beach Boys music on the cassette deck. They sold the car to start a business and then later, when they could afford cars again, they purchased a 1970 ‘Cuda convertible. It was bright pink, and they drove the car around for 10 years before deciding to do their first show car restoration. Over five years, Al and Judy restored the Cuda and had it repainted a vibrant plum color.

“You don’t write the check all at once,” Al said. “It takes about five years.”

They entered the car for the first time in the Goodguys Colorado Nationals in 2012 and won a “Mopar Muscle Pick” award.

1952 Ford F2 Pickup

Judy’s father’s first pickup was a 1952 Ford F2 that he had repainted in the late 1970s. He sold it in 1983 and moved on to other pickups, but Judy remembers talking about his pickup and wishing they had it again. Then one day about two years ago, a man in Denver who had been one of the pickup’s owners called the Herders to say that he had seen the pickup featured in Hemmings Motor News, where people can post listings for classic cars they are selling. Judy called the owner in Delaware and described the unique features her dad had installed into the car, such as welding a steel plate in the bed of the pickup after a wooden board rotted.

“When he fixed something in the pickup, he did it right,” Al said with a laugh. “We negotiated for it and bought it. It is an absolute time capsule. It is exactly the way it was 30 years ago.”

The Herders consider the vehicle a “survivor” of the times.

“When she got in it, she looked at it and had tears in her eyes and said it smells like him,” Herder said fondly.

He said the car gets a lot of attention at shows because many people have a car in their history that they wish they could get back.

1959 Dodge Coronet

When Al was in high school, he bought a 1959 Dodge from the back aisle of a Ford dealer for $75.

Last year, he found a Craigslist ad for a 1959 Dodge with the same body at an auction in Missouri. He won the bid over the phone and drove to Missouri to bring the car back on a trailer.

“It had been in a garage for like 30 years,” he said. “It’s another survivor. It had the original paint and interior. It has about 66,000 miles on it.

He and Judy had to get a new brake system, fuel system and exhaust system put in the car.

“It’s another survivor,” he said. “The version I drove in high school.”

He said that his parents were born here, his kids were born here.

“We’ve always been here. We talked to a lot of people that remember Judy’s dad’s truck at the car shows,” Al said. “It brings a lot of people together to talk about their memories and what they remember about cars. It’s a camaraderie among us car people.”

Watch man's heartwarming reaction to seeing the world in colour for the first time

A video has emerged showing a colour-blind man experiencing the world in colour for the first time.

The heartwarming footage was taken by a friend of the man who had bought him state of the art Enchroma colour-correction glasses for his birthday and posted to YouTube.

In the film, the man appears to be in some sort of park or botanical garden where colourful plants are in abundance.

He is almost child-like in his excitement as he points to various colours and demands to his friends’ amusement: “I want to look at meat!”

Man In awe: The man looks around in amazement at the world in colour

Have your say in our new comments section below

Later on the man is seen looking at a car radio dashboard with an assortment of lights and at one point hilariously clarifies: “I’m honestly not high!”

Colour-blindness, which affects a significant amount of people, is not actually a form of blindness but an inability to see colour clearly and differentiate between certain shades.

The Enchroma colour-correction glasses, which can cost upwards of £400, help colour-blind people see in full colour, often for the first time.

Motorcycle rider dies during Interstate 30 accident

Two motorcycles collided on Interstate 30 south of Malvern on Sunday morning, killing one of the drivers.

According to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report, separate motorcycles driven by Ranthony L. Ward, 30, and Justin R. Lofton, 23, both of Hot Springs, were westbound on Interstate 30 near the 95-mile marker in Hot Spring County about 2:05 a.m.

The vehicles collided and slid several feet before catching fire.

Ward died at the scene. Lofton was taken to Christus-St. Vincent Medical Center in Hot Springs.
