LA Men's Market 2016 | Recap

Reporting from Lindsey Pierce & Romina Pizarro

At the heart of LA’s Fashion District,  The LA Men’s Market brought the best best brands and buyers from the menswear community to the California Market Center (CMC) in Downtown Los Angeles. The two day tradeshow took place March 29 and 30, 2016, exhibiting over 100 brands’ summer and holiday season collections from all categories–covering lifestyle, streetwear, footwear, contemporary, and action sports.

March 2016 marks the third year and sixth event of this tradeshow. Kellen Roland founded the event when he observed a need in two particular areas: a West coast brand and retail gathering in the cultural hotbed of L.A., and an event that specifically highlights holiday and summer collections over the more typical fall and spring collections.

From a brand’s perspective, this trade event offers an efficient way to showcase your lines and make meaningful connections. Roland acknowledges that every business in this era, from small brands to multi-million dollar companies, is looking for opportunities to cut costs. Where brands normally can only meet with a finite amount of buyers in a day, the trade event offers the space to multiply brand and buyer connections with less time and cost.

“This tradeshow serves as a breeding ground for relationships by bringing brands and retailers together,” says Kellen Roland, Founder of LAMM. “LA’s vibrancy and diversity in the fashion world creates a great environment to give people an opportunity to tell their stories at the event.”

The open booth layout on the show floor created an intimate setting that enhanced buyers’ experience  to connect with vendors to view their products. Some prominent brands in attendance included Brixton, Brothers Marshall, Crap Eyewear, Diamond Supply Co, Duvin Design Co, Electric, Globe, Herschel Supply Co, Huf, Katin, Native Shoes, Obey, Outcaste, Primitive Apparel, Slowtide, Stussy, Tavik and Wonderland.

Two encompassing patterns that many brands focused on were expanding their products to a wider audience and understanding what consumers look for. Brands such as Electric expanded their sunglasses to a new line for women, which shifts their action sports look to lifestyle while still integrating its So-Cal vibe. Electric showcased their first women-specific sunglass line, which launched just this past fall. Tavik also exemplified their innovativeness to integrate technology into their higher premium modern clothing, as well as adding liners into their jackets. Tavik captures one strategy of staying relevant to consumer needs, by offering the ability to charge your smartphone from their jacket liner.

It’s only a couple times a year that you get this many creatives, buyers, and sellers in a room together,” LAMM Founder, Kellen Roland

New and established brands alike featured their new collections, such as Diamond Supply Co’s launch on their skate lifestyle footwear that partners with professional skateboarders Brandon Biebel, Torey Pudwill, and Nick Tucker. Primitive Apparel also came out with a collaboration with Notorious B.I.G. and Anna Nicole Smith collection that includes sweat shirts, skateboards and candles.

The theme of brand collaboration stayed strong across the showroom, as Ezekial sported their “Now” collection, made in conjunction with a surf non-profit. Ezekial also highlighted a unique jeans collection that maintained the appearance of stylish and professional pants, but provided the softness and stretch of pants you can relax in through a special thread-weave (jeggings for men, perhaps?). Globe also responded to the shift toward broader consumer selection by creating their first multi-layer outerwear jacket.

Many brands that previously focused on a singular fashion arena or season have expanded their selection to serve multiple seasons and a wider audience. In order to stay relevant against hundreds of competing and similar collections, brands are seriously looking to consumer needs and desires to differentiate themselves. Along with the opportunity to showcase their best to multiple buyers in a day, the trade event allows for a space for brands to get inspired by seeing the innovations and additions that their contemporaries are creating.

“It’s only a couple times a year that you get this many creatives, buyers, and sellers in a room together,” LAMM Founder, Kellen Roland, comments. The LA Men’s Market offers a special opportunity to take advantage of creative energy and ideas, and make meaningful connections.

As for the future of the LA Men’s Market, Roland sees incremental growth. To him, it’s about adding the right brands at the right time.

Check back to follow the 2016 action sports fashion trends and recaps of all major trade shows.

Honda Motor Co. reported a 9.4 percent increase in U.S. sales last month, bolstered by strong car shipments and gains at both its Honda and Acura divisions.

Volume jumped 11 percent at the Honda division with 123,369 sales in March, and edged up 1.2 percent at Acura with 14,852 deliveries.

Overall, American Honda’s car sales rose 12 percent and truck volume increased 6.8 percent.

The Honda division’s gains were helped by strong car demand, with sales of the Accord rising 17 percent to 30,523 and the Civic achieving its third consecutive monthly record, with sales up 22 percent to 32,855.

The automaker moved 6,398 HR-V subcompact crossovers in March. Honda said its new plant in Celaya, Mexico, where the HR-V is assembled, is focused primarily on the brand’s newest light truck.

However, some of Honda’s most popular light trucks struggled last month.

In a market where light-truck deliveries are a bright spot, sales of the Pilot dropped 11 percent while CR-V volume slipped 3.2 percent.

At Acura, sales were led by the TLX and RDX in March, with TLX volume rising 9.9 percent to 3,768. The RDX crossover set a March record, with volume surging 34 percent to 5,310.

Overall, Acura’s truck sales slipped 0.7 percent last month while car deliveries rose 4.8 percent.

Attention All Italian Car Lovers... Book A Ticket To Nashville

Pack your bags and head to Downton Nashville, on May 27, 2016, to Nashville’s Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Bellissima! The Italian Automotive Renaissance, 1945–1975 marks an unprecedented gathering of rare and stunning Italian-designed automobiles and motorcycles in a museum setting. The exhibition celebrates the streamlined elegance, novel and powerful engineering, and seductive allure characterizing Italian coachbuilt cars, concept cars, and motorcycles produced during the post–World War II economic revival. On view only at the Frist Center through October 9, 2016, Bellissima! boasts 22 extraordinary vehicles from private collections and museums that are now among the most sought-after collector cars in the world.

Returning to the Frist Center after the 2013 presentation of Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, automotive authority and guest curator Ken Gross has chosen 19 automobiles and 3 motorcycles for Bellissima!. Moving from one gem to another, visitors will experience the creative connections and brilliant design language that helped propel Italy to the global forefront of the automotive world. “While providing a reminder of the role aesthetics can play in our daily lives, the exhibition also shows design excellence as a force that can transform a nation, in this case one that had recently been humbled by war, but which never lost its love for artistic expression in all aspects of life,” said Frist Center Chief Curator Mark Scala. “Tied to an age in which graceful aerodynamics provided an optimistic language of the future, these vehicles are quite simply astonishing on both a visual and technical level.”

Highlights include the ultra-rare trio of mid-1950s Alfa Romeo Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnicas, known as BATs, whose curvaceous fins and tapered tails suggest the curving wings and bullet-like bodies of bats in flight. The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is considered by design critic and exhibition catalogue contributor Robert Cumberford to be “the most desirable of all sports cars ever made.” The game-changing Lamborghini Miura, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is a technical tour de force and as Ken Gross writes in the exhibition catalogue, “resembles a stiletto on cast magnesium wheels.”

Lesser-known vehicles in the exhibition will offer surprises for even the most knowledgeable car aficionados. The drastically slender 1970 Lancia Stratos’ mere 33-inch-tall wedge-shaped body has doors that open vertically rather than swinging outward. The futuristic, arrow-shaped 1955 Ghia Gilda, named for Rita Hayworth’s slinky character in the film Gilda, has an elongated hood, snug cockpit, pointy rear fenders and jet-like engine whine that evoke advanced aircraft design.

The motorcycles on display are the 1957 Moto Guzzi V-8 “Otto”, a bike revered for its exceptional speed and radical “dustbin” fairing concealing its 8-cylinder engine; a 1973 MV Agusta 750 Sport, widely considered “the Ferrari of motorcycles” for its race-bred handling, brash aesthetics and thrilling exhaust “music”; and the 1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport that, as Gross said, “catapulted the status of the small Bolognese firm from interesting to legendary.”

Bellissima! The Italian Automotive Renaissance, 1945–1975 was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts with guest curator Ken Gross.

Andreja Pejic on changing the face of fashion as a transgender model and why one day she would ...

Andreja Pejic is accustomed to stares. As she sips English breakfast tea in the lobby lounge of Manhattan’s trendy Bowery Hotel, just blocks from her apartment in the East Village, people at other tables shoot her covert glances and sneak phone pics, but she takes it in her stride. It’s hard to blame them.

Not only is the 6ft 1in 24-year-old Bosnian, who was raised as a refugee in Australia, among the most in-demand fashion models of our era – unsurprising, considering her cut-crystal cheekbones and symmetry so flawless that it almost seems android – but she also has an irresistible back story.

First scouted as a willowy 17-year-old boy working at a Melbourne McDonald’s, she was brought to Europe as a tantalisingly androgynous newcomer who walked the men’s runway for Marc Jacobs and donned both men’s and women’s clothes for Jean Paul Gaultier. She was touted as “living between two genders”, a narrative that fitted the fashion industry’s fresh fetish for sexually ambiguous beauty. But in 2014 Pejic announced that she was, in fact, a transgender woman and would undergo what is now largely referred to as gender-confirmation surgery.

“It’s been quite a ride since then,” she says, her voice refined and melodious with a slight Aussie twang, as she folds a lock of long blonde hair behind her ear.

She carries herself regally, despite casually chic attire – an oversized white cashmere turtle-neck, jeans and cowboy boots. “When you’ve been through so much in such a short time, it takes your body and your mind quite a while to catch up, to settle down.”

In fact, on most levels, she doesn’t seem to be settling down at all. Instead, she is ramping up in ways that she never could have imagined just a year or two ago, most notably by appearing on the Paris catwalk earlier this month as part of the H&M Studio show (below).

HMrunway17.jpg

Elsewhere, with carefully chosen events including a TEDx talk, a recent podcast for Foreign Affairs and a keynote address in February at a Human Rights Campaign event, she has become an elegant, measured voice for transgender acceptance on an international level, a Grace Kelly-like antidote to Caitlyn Jenner’s brash, Hollywood tell-all style. It’s hard to know what’s more surprising: that this ur-female spent most of her life in a male body or that someone who could so easily skate by on her beauty has decided not to.

“I’m a bit of a nerd, an introvert by nature, so I’m still working on being comfortable with public speaking,” says Pejic, who was a standout student at secondary school and hopes one day to go to university.

“I just feel as though it’s the right thing to do. In generations past the ideal if you were trans was to disappear, to move to another place and start afresh. That was the best they could hope for. But I got famous first. I didn’t have the option of anonymity. And, of course, we’ve moved past that kind of thinking. Now – at least I hope – the ideal is to incorporate your past, to inhabit it while you’re becoming yourself. I think it’s my responsibility to be truthful in as many ways as I can.”

She is grateful for the years spent as a male model, which enabled her to see the world and make real money – she was raised by a single mother in refugee camps before going to Australia aged eight. But living a lie (her agent believed the industry wasn’t ready for a transgender supermodel) also took its toll.

Just months before she announced she would transition surgically, New York magazine put her on its cover, naked to the waist with the bony flat chest of an adolescent, her face fully made up. The headline was “Male model of the year”. Having been “out” to her family and friends as transgender since her early teens (she bought hormone-blockers illegally on the internet to stave off puberty) pretending to be a boy, albeit an androgynous one, left her full of sadness and self-doubt.

“It was a time that was really great on so many levels and also really difficult for me. Working that way made me famous and gave me a career but it wasn’t what I would have chosen,” she recalls.

All of that changed as attitudes toward transgender issues began to shift and, at the same moment, she was at last able to afford the surgery. Not all trans people change their bodies but for Pejic it felt necessary. “The timing has been amazing,” she says. “I  just stop and think, ‘Oh my god, what if this was even 10, 20 years ago?’”

A student of gender dysphoria through history – she has steeped herself in Virginia Woolf and the writings of Marxist revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg – she is working on a documentary that will explore transgender models who hid their pasts.

One idol is Caroline Cossey, the British beauty who worked under the name Tula. In the 1970s she was a Page 3 girl and appeared in Australian Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Outed by journalists, she wrestled with suicidal thoughts before writing two successful memoirs.

Despite her commitment to speaking out Pejic is loath to define herself purely by gender. It’s a trap, she thinks, to reduce yourself to your sex. Before she got the surgery she spent too much time thinking about it, longing to bring her body in line with her mind. But now she no longer has to dwell on it. “Other women don’t go around saying ‘Wow, I’m female’. They have room in their lives for other things. That’s my goal.”

Pejic isn’t the type to get easily offended by those to whom gender issues are still a bit confusing. That’s surprising in a world where young people, especially at British universities and on US college campuses, debate “micro-aggressions” and prize “safe, conflict-free spaces”.

She doesn’t get upset when people ask her rude technical questions about her anatomy or use the wrong pronoun. “I choose not to wallow in my pain,” she says. “There are a lot of things that are unfortunate in the world and you have to be resilient. Identity politics are really divisive. They separate people instead of unifying them as human. They cause you to believe that your own group is the most downtrodden. To me, the important thing is to constantly look outside yourself, to see what you can do in the greater universe.”

Such equanimity isn’t easy in an industry obsessed with appearances, she concedes. “Look, I’m a model. It’s a catty business. I have the usual insecurities, compounded by my unique ones from being trans. But you have to remind yourself that beauty is a fleeting thing and in the end, no matter who you are, you need to develop your substance.”

142497187.jpg

How can you spend your time worrying about a random spot, she wonders aloud, when someone like Tara Hudson, a 26-year-old post-operative transgender woman from Bath, was kept for nearly 12 months in an all-male prison just because she didn’t fill out a piece of paperwork?  “There are just so many more important, scarier things that need to be addressed all over the world. They make you realise your priorities.”

For Pejic, succeeding as a female model is an overtly political act. After her surgery she made a conscious decision to abandon more work with the edgier niche brands, the kinds with no qualms about being associated with her (she has kept her beauty contract – the most lucrative part of the industry – with Make-up Forever).

With her sort of features – classic, mainstream – why not go after Chanel or Dior? Real progress, she says, will come when such corporate-controlled labels “realise their business won’t fall apart if there’s a trans model in their campaign”. She understands that, for now, her background sets her apart, maybe even gives her an advantage, but she wishes clients would judge her as they do other top-tier models. “One day,” she says, “I would like to be just another girl.”

Pejic is more comfortable talking politics than she is about her personal life. Although she has a boyfriend these days she admits she is “pretty immature, a little stunted, about the whole thing with men”. Partly that’s a reflection of the years she spent in gender limbo, but also it’s a matter of her reserved nature. “I don’t fall in love easily,” she says. “My girlfriends joke that I’m an ice princess. But a lot of them fall in love rashly and it’s a disaster. Then they turn to me and say, ‘I wish I had a helping of your ice’.”

Such self-possession is just part of being careful and smart, thinking everything through, planning for a long and serious future. “That’s who I am,” she says. “It has nothing to do with gender. It’s much deeper than that. I mean, aren’t most important things deeper than that?”

The feds say screening for testicular cancer isn't necessary. This health advocate is out to prove ...

The official advice on whether men should regularly check their testicles for signs of cancer is: no, don’t do it.

But ever since he discovered a lump at the age of 17, health policy researcher Michael Rovito has been on a one-man mission to change the minds of the medical establishment.

He began when he was in graduate school by studying how best to communicate with men about the risks and signs of testicular cancer. He’s since published a series of papers arguing how and why doctors should tell their patients to check their testicles regularly. And he’s even started a nonprofit — the Men’s Health Initiative — to push his message.

Yet, Rovito, now 35 and an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida, has a formidable adversary in his path: the US Preventative Services Task Force, which advises the federal government on health issues.

For more than a decade, the USPTF has recommended against routine testicular cancer screening, either by self-inspection or clinical examination. The reason? There’s no proof it saves lives. “Screening lacks benefits,” task force chair Dr. Albert Siu, a geriatrician at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, told STAT.

Because treatment is so effective, it’s not crucial to find testicular cancer right when it emerges. Accidental discovery when a lump is big enough to be obvious is often good enough, according to leading physician groups.

Without some gold rush of funding, it’s highly unlikely that clinical trials of the kind the USPTF wants to see will be run anytime soon. But Rovito argues that the benefits of self-exams extend to finding testicular problems other than cancer, and that regular screening should not cause men too much anxiety — an often-cited risk of the practice (although the harms haven’t been systematically studied).

“Let’s just think about this from a different perspective from quantitative numbers and mortality rates, please,” he said.

Rovito is also going on the offensive against the USPTF with a paper now under review that directly calls on the task force to change its stance on testicular screening from a “D” grade, the strongest recommendation against a practice, to an “I,” the rating for insufficient information.

Michelle Bruzzese for STAT

Rovito advocates for more testicular cancer screening.

Some experts already practice what Rovito is preaching.

Dr. Joseph Alukal, a urologist at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, said that he’s treated patients who tried to ignore a lump in their testicles. Some waited until the mass was grapefruit-sized to come in.

“What’s the harm,” he said, “in asking [men] to just say, ‘Look, there’s nothing wrong with checking yourself once in the shower a month. Here’s what you should be feeling for.’”

Alukal said he routinely disregards the USPTF’s recommendations and examines all of his patients for signs of testicular cancer; he also tells most of his patients to check themselves.

But critics say there are downsides, too.

“Why would we just do something if we don’t know there’s evidence for it?”

Elizabeth Platz, Johns Hopkins University

Dr. John Tipton, of the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa, said that family medicine doctors like himself typically only have a few minutes with each patient, and doing a testicular examination for each one would take precious time away from other services.

“Everything that you add on detracts from something important,” Tipton said.

And for such a rare and treatable disease — only about 9,000 American men will develop testicular cancer this year, and fewer than 400 will die from the disease — Elizabeth Platz, a cancer epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, questions whether encouraging screening is a good use of public health resources.

“Why would we just do something if we don’t know there’s evidence for it?” she said.

Michelle Bruzzese for STAT

Together with his students at the University of Central Florida, Rovito, left, is pushing the message that testicular self-exams are helpful.

Platz said she remembers when breast self-exams were thought to help women detect tumors early and was encouraged even in college-aged women. Then, a randomized controlled trial came out showing no benefit on breast cancer mortality.

“Women got very upset about that,” she said. “The evidence changed, so the guideline changed.”

She said the same principle applies to testicular cancer. While it may seem intuitively smart to have men check themselves, the evidence remains elusive.

Still, Rovito thinks educating men about risks to their health is worthwhile.

He recalled a time in sixth grade when the girls in his class were pulled out to learn about menstruation. The boys “had to stay there and play tic-tac-toe,” he said, while the girls “went and learned about their bodies, which I’m kind of jealous about.”

When he discovered a lump on his testicle in high school, he didn’t know what to do. He waited for it to go away, but it didn’t. “I sat there for a couple months thinking, ‘Oh my god, I’m going to die.’”

When Rovito finally went to the doctor, it turned out he didn’t have cancer. Instead, the lump was an enlarged vein in the scrotum.

Rovito now wants other men to be spared the ignorance and fear he felt at the time.

“If I ever have a chance to educate other guys on not just testicular health but other issues, just to get them more comfortable with bringing up the issues,” he said, “then I’ll consider that a happy life for me.”

Cuba Ventures Discusses Significance of U.S. President Obama's Visit to Cuba

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 29, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cuba Ventures Corp.(TSX-V:CUV) (OTCBB:MPSFF) (Frankfurt:IJA2) (the “Company”) (formerly MPH Ventures Corp.) is pleased to update its shareholders on the significance of the recent visit to Cuba by U.S. President Obama. Cuba Ventures Corp., through its subsidiary Travelucion Media, is an online travel and digital media marketing company that specializes in travel marketing, electronic reservations and online booking solutions for international visitors to Cuba.

Last week, President Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. President in almost 90 years to visit Cuba marking a historic moment for both countries as they work towards normalizing relations. There is still the overriding U.S. trade embargo the U.S. has placed on Cuba, which prohibits the vast majority of American corporations from doing business in or with Cuba. There are a select few American corporations that have obtained special licenses that allow them to operate in Cuba but, in our view, these are more symbolic in nature and illustrate the momentum building for the trade embargo to likely be lifted by the U.S. Congress. There is a unique window of opportunity for Cuba Ventures in that there is minimal competition from American companies due to the U.S. trade embargo, yet travel restrictions on Americans going to Cuba are dissipating, opening up a multi-billion dollar market servicing these travelers.

Along with U.S. President Obama, a number of U.S. companies visited Cuba as the first of a handful of American companies now allowed to operate in Cuba in over 50 years. U.S. President Obama has been instrumental in initiating closer links between select American companies and Cuba, and some of these recent developments complement Travelucion Media’s rapidly growing business in Cuba. Travelucion welcomes the rebranding of Hotel Inglaterra, Hotel Quinta Avenida and Hotel Santa Isabel which will now be operated by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. All three hotels continue to be available, as they have been for many years, through Travelucion’s proprietary Cuba Hotel booking platform and will be rebranded on the company’s network of 432 Cuban related websites in the coming weeks.

The rollout by the internet giant Google of WiFi across Cuba will further allow Travelucion Media to deal more closely with its self-employed Cuban service providers across the Caribbean nation. Another exciting aspect of this is the proposal by the company of allowing privately owned Paladar Restaurants to feature on Travelucion’s upcoming revamped Cuba-Restaurants.com website, incorporating direct table bookings with the private restaurant owners through both a Smartphone App or directly online. Communication between Travelucion’s booking platforms and Cuban private business owners such as B&B’s, Paladar Restaurants and Classic Cars rentals and the company’s booking platform, which receives +30 million annual page views, has always been a major obstacle impeding a rollout of such direct booking programs. Google’s entrance into Cuba, with its planned WiFi deployment, will ensure a rapid introduction of these convenient booking services which empower both Cuban entrepreneurs and tourists alike. The company also hopes to extend this direct booking service to include the self-employed owners of Cuba’s now famous Classic American Cars, essentially allowing visitors to book these vehicles, both ahead of time and while in Cuba, much similar to services offered by Uber. Travelucion Media already has the essential internet traffic to make such programs viable with U.S based visitors up from 11% in 2014 to almost 34% in 2016 of all online visitors to Travelucion’s 432 Cuba centric websites.

Jim Pettit, President and CEO stated, “These incremental changes that are spurred on by the warming in the U.S.A. – Cuba relations may seem token but are targeted at specific sectors of the Cuban economy that have the best and most immediate opportunities for growth.  That is the already robust tourism industry and the aspects of this industry that rely on the entrepreneurial skills of the Cuban people. Private residences, B&B’s, Paladar Restaurants and Classic Car rentals are already active and growing components of Travelucion Media’s business in Cuba. We look forward to continuing growth in these sectors that allow the Cuban people to experience entrepreneurship.”
