WBM Himalayan Natural Crystal Salt Lamp
Emits a warm amber glow and helps clean the air of pollutants.

Hand-Carved Lamp Provides a Soft Glow
The lamp is made from salt crystals from the Himalayan Mountains. Unlit, the crystal’s rough-hewn, irregular surface looks pink. When lit with the included 15-watt bulb, it gives a warm amber glow. You can even change the color of the bulb to give a different hue to the lighting area.

Use the lamp as a gentle nightlight, or to create a romantic mood. Whether in a child’s room, near the television or computer, or in your office, the lamp, sitting on its round neem base, provides a natural touch.

Salt Crystal is a Natural Air Purifier
The Himalayan Natural Crystal Salt Lamp also works as an air purifier. When lit, the lamp emits negative ions that fight against positively charged particles that cause you to feel stuffy and sluggish. The lit salt crystal clears the air naturally of allergens like smoke, pet dander, pollens, and other air pollutants. It dilutes odors so that you can breathe easier. People with asthma often find it helpful in reducing their symptoms. You can keep the lamp lit for as long as you like to maintain this purifying effect.

Care and Sizing Information
This lamp is very easy to clean–just wipe the outside surface with a damp sponge and dry with a paper towel. Because each crystal is natural, dimensions and weight vary.

Syrian refugee women take on life in a man's world

Lebanon, with a population of 4.4 million, is currently acting as host to more than one million Syrian refugees – three-quarters of whom are women and children. As a consequence, many women are now supporting their families alone for the first time in their lives.

The mass influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon has put a severe strain on schools, hospitals and water supplies. Many refugees have exhausted their limited savings, and some have taken under-the-table jobs with low wages and poor working conditions to feed their families. The refugees also live with the constant threat of being deported back to Syria.

In the run-up to International Women’s Day next week, Al Jazeera met five Syrian women who have been struggling to survive in Lebanon.

Kelantan MCA blasts PAS for motorcycle ruling

KUALA LUMPUR: Kelantan MCA questioned the practicality of the Kelantan state government to disallow unmarried young men and women from riding motorcycles together.

It was reported that the PAS-led state government was looking to enforce by-laws to prevent such youths from riding together, labelling the activity as “unIslamic.”

Kelantan MCA liaison committee secretary Datuk Lua Choon Hann argued that denying youths of opposite genders from sharing a ride was not “pragmatic”.

“How may cousins or brothers and sisters share a motorcycle to commute to institutes of higher learning or to work or other family-wholesome leisure?” he said.

He also questioned how foreign tourists would be able to use motorcycles to explore the state.

“Why target unmarried youths when activities deemed immoral by PAS can be committed by anyone irrespective of age group or appearance of religious piety,” Lua said in a statement.

Lua pointed out that the laws could be seen as class-oriented for only targeting those who may only afford motorcycles.

“Who is to guarantee that bedroom shenanigans do not occur within the confined spaces of one’s car even by married couples in broad daylight,” he said.

Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said local councils had been directed to study measures to make it an offence for unmarried people to ride on a motorcycle.

“It is a trend that unmarried young couples are travelling on motorcycles and this is the sort of activities that we need to curb,” he reportedly said.

Kelantan MCA also urged Ahmad to look into road safety measures and to discourage youths from joining mat rempit races, which has become a problem nationwide.

Uber Unveils Pilot Motorcycle Ride-Sharing Service for India

Uber Technologies Inc. announced a pilot motorcycle and scooter service for India as the ride-sharing application adds to its efforts to capture customers in the world’s second-most populous nation.

UberMOTO’s on-demand service will debut in the technology hub of Bengaluru offering rides starting from 15 rupees (22 U.S. cents), it said in a statement Thursday. The announcement comes a week after a similar service debuted n Bangkok.

The world’s most valuable startup is stealing a march over Ola, beating its Indian rival to the start of two-wheel services. The San Francisco-based company operates its ride-sharing service in 26 Indian cities, more than any other country outside its U.S. home, according to the statement.

Ola, backed by SoftBank Group Corp. and Tiger Global Management, has a presence in more than 100 Indian cities and is part of an alliance of Uber’s competitors including Didi Kuaidi in China, GrabTaxi Holdings Pte in Southeast Asia and Lyft Inc. in the US.

Commuters in Bengaluru can summon motorcycles through the existing Uber app and tap into a popular personal transport option in a city with meager public transit choices.

UberMOTO expands the ride service’s fleet beyond cars. Uber introduced three-wheeler autorickshaw rides in Delhi last year but the pilot lasted for just seven months.

How FKA twigs's Glittering Grace Wales Bonner Costume Came to Be

Photo:  Jamie-James Medina

When the spotlight shone on FKA twigs last week during her Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon appearance, the 28-year-old Brit appeared as if she was descending from the skies. Not only was Tahliah Barnett invoking prayer in the lyrics of her ballad, “Good to Love,” but her memorable performance was enhanced by the otherworldly stage look she debuted that night: a white robe and matching pants with an intricately embroidered nude-illusion top underneath made up of Swarovski crystals. That ensemble, the result of a collaboration with designer Grace Wales Bonner and Swarovski, is reminiscent of the deeply historical and sensitive menswear designs that have made Wales Bonner one of LVMH’s 2016 most promising finalists. It’s quite a departure from the harnesses and body-con stage costumes FKA twigs usually wears in concerts, but it appeared like second-skin nonetheless. Which is why it’s difficult to imagine that Wales Bonner and Barnett only just recently met.

Photo:  Jamie-James Medina

When Barnett attended Wales Bonner’s Fall 2016 fashion show during men’s Fashion Week, she had a visceral response to what she saw. “I related straightaway to how true her work is. You can really feel her and her culture and her upbringing in what she creates,” she says via email. “I felt so emotional when I saw the clothes and I don’t even know her personally. I just had this massive sense of pride at how much time she takes in her work and how, sort of, curated the fashion was. It really touched me to see somebody out there who clearly cares about her work as much as I do mine.” Wales Bonner similarly responded to Barnett’s rigor and ambition; as she made her first foray into womenswear, FKA twigs proved a perfect muse. “I would like the Wales Bonner woman to reflect those qualities and that strength and elegance,” Wales Bonner writes from India, where she is currently researching her next project.

This was her first venture into costuming, but it felt like the right challenge for the 25-year-old designer. As Barnett freely admits, “I think I’m different from a lot of other performers at the moment in the sense that I might just start rolling around on the stage and I might not even know myself what I’m going to be do before I start just dancing.” These graceful but erratic bursts of movement—a mix of awe-inspiring ballet, vogueing, and free form—necessitated many fittings beforehand, with the two women working to develop a look that showed a good balance of skin, worked with that unpredictable movement, and ultimately made Barnett feel safe. To bring out the ethereal elements of purity and spirituality that FKA twigs’s performance evokes, Wales Bonner turned again to Swarovski; both designer and musician have collaborated with the company in the past. At the end of her performance last week, Barnett flung off her robe to reveal a costume embellished with Wales Bonner’s inspired mix of cowrie shells and Swarovski crystals. They glittered with every stealth dance move she made, signaling, we can only hope, even more dazzling moments to come.

Your Healthy Family: Men's Health

COLORADO SPRINGS –

Memorial Hospital is hosting a March MAN-ness event next Wednesday March 9, 2016 to emphasize the importance of disease prevention and early detection for men.
Doctors say sometimes men aren’t the best at going to the doctor regularly, but it needs to be done.
So March MAN-ness is a fun way to highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle: everything from when to get your cholesterol or prostate checked — to when to get a colonoscopy.
“There are a lot of problems out there — just simple blood pressure. Do you have diabetes? Those things that if we can’t check, we don’t know that we have it, and therefore we can’t control it when it’s at a controllable level,” said Dr. Ian Tullberg with UCHealth Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Tullberg says doing little things now can give doctors a heads-up on how your health will be in the future; and can even cut down on future costs.
There are still spots available if you’d like to sign up.

I Visited an Outlaw Motorcycle Club's HQ to Hang With Some Vampires

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

A few things came to mind when I though about what I might encounter during a visit to the Bushwick headquarters of the outlaw motorcycle gang, cast iron cannon one member allegedly sold to an undercover NYPD officer a few years back (definitely the most hilarious of the items that led to a slew of criminal weapons trafficking charges brought against a number of the club’s members). And then there was the unmistakable visage of Tatu Jesus, an FO with a preference for blood-red contact lenses, heavy chains, and black leather.

It’s hard to explain until you see him, but Tatu looks exactly like a vampire biker. Naturally. Which makes sense, seeing that I was invited here by was Eric Rivas, the director of Vamp Bikers Trilogy. The Brooklyn-born-and-bred filmmaker was wrapping up part three, starring Michael Alig as a Club Kid zombie alongside “authentic, real outlaw bikers.” (The second installment, Vamp Bikers Dos, screens tonight, March 1, at 8:45 p.m., as part of Anthology Film Archives’ New Filmmakers series.)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

Getting behind the doors of an outlaw motorcycle club is kind of a dream, especially considering that it took one freelance photographer, Shadi K. Best, about a month to gain their trust before he could shoot the members. (He documented the group for several years starting in 2011, one year before the gang became embroiled in the gun running mess.) And yet, oddly enough, the FO clubhouse is just steps away from Roberta’s. Up until the moment I was standing outside the club, I had no idea that one percenters (or self-declared outlaw gangs) were convening in so-called Morgantown. The clubhouse sits behind those same colorful murals aimed at sweeping away the area’s industrial grit, transforming the wash of grey into a technicolor kaleidoscope of digestible images that’s way more fitting of the fine-dining and shopping destination the place has become. Picturing a gun-toting outlaw gang here was very strange indeed.

But the more I found out about the FO– a network of Puerto Rican friends and family members, many of them Bushwick natives– the more I realized that “Morgantown,” which has changed drastically along with the rest of the neighborhood, probably looks even stranger to the members of the motorcycle club.

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

“Not all, but many” of the Forbidden Ones, as Rivas explained, have appeared in all three of the Vamp Bikers films. And the club’s “mother chapter” headquarters is among the sites that Rivas has used for the third film, including several parkside spots in Coney Island– an eerie place in the winter, when the carnival booths are shuttered, the rides frozen, and the beachside theme park is essentially abandoned. The footage shot at the clubhouse has been reserved for a music video starring the genderqueer rapper Uncle Meg (aka Meg Skaff of the rap crew Hand Job Academy), which will act as the backdrop for the opening credits of Tres. It’s a proud B movie, so just go with it. (Another music video starring Meg served as the film’s teaser trailer, and Rivas also convinced Baby Pun, the son of the legendary New York City rapper Big Pun, to contribute original verse that will be incorporated into the film.)

“The clubhouse always stood out to me as being in the middle of all the hipster places,” Rivas remarked. As a good friend of the Forbidden Ones club President, Tito (aka Rafael Martinez), Rivas said he’s been around the club for some “good times” with his pals. “We’re of similar age and we’re both Nuyorican, he’s a biker and I’m not, but the friendship is there,” he explained. The two met while Rivas was filming Lost in Coney Island. Tito was on set to lend a hand with fixing a Harley, a prop for the film that was having problems, and ended up acting in the film. “I thought he was good in the scene, then realized he came to help out a fellow biker on a tow and not to act,” Rivas recalled. “From that point on I made it a point to ask him to be in the films– turns out he got the acting bug and is brilliant in stunt coordination.”

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

Tatu Jesus was the first person to greet me inside the door to the clubhouse, which I was sort of terrified to find wide open, meaning I didn’t really have the option of asking to be let in. Thankfully he recognized me and pointed me toward the basement, where I could find Rivas.

It took my eyes a moment to adjust to the dark, subterranean bar, lit by red lights and a greenish glow. It seemed as if I’d stumbled into the middle of someone’s living room, complete with a big-screen TV blasting Cops, a sleepy-looking pitbull, and a gaggle of haggard hangers-on grabbing at each other and teetering around in drunken revelry. I started to step back, convinced I was seeing things I shouldn’t be seeing. But beyond the cushy area reserved for the party people, the place started to look like an actual establishment.

The club’s insignia–the acronym “FO” cut by two crossed pistols– popped out at me everywhere, from faded patches sewn neatly to leather vests and jackets. Another one of the club’s symbols, a skeleton joker face wearing a menacing grimace, cackled from the purple and black pool table and peered down from a flag hung behind the bar, watching over the members wearing huge silver rings and black leather getups. A number of the members were looking up at a large flatscreen monitor to the right of the bar, which projected grainy black-and-white security footage from cameras pointed at various entrances to the club and on the sidewalk outside. I realized someone, maybe everyone, had been watching me the whole time. And I was definitely attracting more confused stares now that I was actually inside. Suddenly, I realized that with screwed-up orange hair and ’90s mom jeans, I was either their worst hipster nightmare or the opposite of “Forbidden Ones’ Bitch” material.

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

Thankfully, I noticed some recognizable faces, including the lanky sideshow guy from the Coney Island set I’d visited in January. He was solo-grinding up against a pole, flopping around like a spaghetti noodle, twerking as much as his man hips would allow. A vampire girl with teased-out tresses was mirroring his dance moves. The scene indicated either it was beer o’clock or the crew was filming another raucous party scene. Rivas, who was clutching two bottles of Corona, caught my eye and confirmed the former.

He was speaking excitedly with Meg– a tiny, glasses-wearing package with a spunky, kid-like face but plenty of baditude– preparing to shoot their final scene for the day outside the club. Apparently it was Alig, ever the hip kid, who turned Rivas on to Meg. “He told me that [Hand Job Academy] was going to be as big as the Beastie Boys,” Rivas recalled. “Meg and I hit it off, we really get each other.” At the clubhouse, the filmmaker, a lifelong hip-hop fan, gushed over the young rapper who, in exchange for the Vamp Biker-themed video, is contributing her song to the film. “It’s a hybrid of Vamp Bikers with Meg’s style– it’s gonna be crazy,” Rivas predicted.

The music video, which acts as a story-within-a-story, opens with a scene shot outside the club in which the motorcycle gang, pitbull in tow, descends on Meg. “They’re like, ‘Get this stupid fucking hipster!’” she explained, summing up the scene. One of the outlaws lifts Meg off the ground, kicking and screaming, and slings her over his shoulder, dragging her into the club. “Then they’re like, ‘Rap! Rap! You can’t fucking rap!’” Then at some point, things turn romantic. The film also stars Meg’s girlfriend, a tiny Wednesday Adams type, as the love interest, and Meg as the motorcycle-riding bad bitch who steals her away from one of the outlaws played by Tito, the President of the Forbidden Ones. At the end, they ride off together into the darkness.

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

“They see each other in the club and it’s love,” Rivas explained. The story is inspired by the Wong Kar-wai film Fallen Angels, a hyper-stylized noir film set in Hong Kong complete with shoot outs, speeding motorcycles, and a star-crossed love story. When asked if she actually rode the motorcycle in the scene, Meg cackled. “Hell no, I don’t wanna die today.” Actually, it was Tito who suggested they strap the motorcycle to a trailer and drag it through the streets while filming. “Tito was the first one to help me make this emotional contact between two people on the bike,” Rivas explained. “He’s helped me out so much even though he’s going through a lot right now.” Instead of concentrating on the road, or dying perhaps, Meg and her GF were able to lock eyes.

I only saw bits and pieces of raw footage long before Meg (who does all her own editing) will have the opportunity to arrange it all. But what I did glimpse was impressive– the takes were gorgeously shot and the scenes were intermittently moody and hilarious. In a way, the video seems to fulfill fantasies that I imagine some of the FOs must have about putting things in the neighborhood back in place, so to speak. After all, the story opens with badass biker dudes snatching up a white hipster transplant and dragging her down into their seedy underworld.

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

(Photo: Nicole Disser)

But the video also plays on Meg’s own insecurities about her work. While she’s got plenty of hip-hop swagger, several times during conversation she brought up her fear that people sometimes dismissed as nothing more than a “hipster.” By the end of the video, however, Meg has proven to the vampires, bikers, and zombie sideshow freaks not only that she can rap, but that she can also party with the weirdos and win the cute girl at the end of the day.

Somehow, Rivas had managed to bring so many seemingly disparate groups together under the roof of a very improbable location– a Nylon-featured genderqueer rapper from West Virginia, Coney Island freaks, and motorcycle outlaws– and all for one very unusual film.

Look for the premiere of Vamp Bikers Tres this summer.

Funding in a (wo)man's world

As two frazzled mummies, celebrating the launch of our much-loved new venture, Halto, we have done things a bit differently right from the get-go, and had the opportunity to experience a new way of funding that is fast becoming a go-to for business women like us.

It is nothing new to suggest a disparity in business investment opportunities between men and women. Harvard Business School’s Alison Wood Brooks found that investors are more likely to be swayed by a man’s business pitch, compared with the same pitch delivered by a woman.

In fact, statistics show that men get far more venture capital funding than women, somewhere in the region of 12:1, making it tough for a female entrepreneur to get the financial backing they require when it counts. So could crowdfunding be a way to level the playing field?

According to a new study by Jason Greenberg (New York University), women are outperforming men on crowdfunding platforms, with female-owned businesses reaching their targets far more often than male-owned ones. This is good news for women looking to fund a business start-up or growth opportunity, especially when other routes may seem closed off.

The International Women’s Day’s (March 8) campaign theme this year (aptly) is to ‘Pledge for Parity’, with the first pledge to ‘help women and girls achieve their ambitions’. For us, (two Cornish sisters, and mums, with a great idea for a new product but zero capital), crowdfunding has given us the means to realise ambitions. A big tick in the International Women’s Day ‘pledge pot’! Interestingly, apart from Halto, the only other female-owned business to be accepted onto the new GAIN20 network is about to crowd fund to finance the next step of their business growth plans.

Halto (being a device for halter neck swimwear) was quite obviously aimed at women, and solved a problem that men simply couldn’t always relate to. We have had some incredible people that have supported us throughout our journey, but the majority of them been men.

It has been tough to get across the very real benefits and market potential of the product when talking to a room full of people who simply do not understand the problem we are solving. Combined with the fact that we come with young children, it is often hard to be taken seriously despite being more than capable.

This is where crowdfunding has been invaluable. Not only is it a lower risk option (statistically much more appealing to women on the whole), but it offers a real-time feedback loop for testing marketing activities, the product concept and the market potential for the product itself.

The qualitative feedback we received throughout the campaign was been invaluable, and undoubtedly helped to bolster our energy and belief in Halto even more. The qualitative information, plus the fact that we raised £10k in 18 days with little in terms of marketing budget, has proved to our target buyers (and future investors) that not only is there a substantial market for our product, but we the right people to see it through. And all this in addition to raising finance!

So why are women on the whole doing so well at crowdfunding?

The most successful campaigns are run by people who can build a strong community around them, be able to communicate well, be creative and engaging, have a sense of humour when it counts and be able to plan ahead. You also need a positive head and lots of energy to be able to see a campaign through.

Are these predominantly female traits? Actually, we think these are the characteristics of a good entrepreneur, but they are also strong female attributes which, when combined with the low barriers to entry and low risk nature of crowd funding, women who would struggle to raise capital elsewhere, are being given the opportunity to spread their wings and fly. And it seems they are doing just that!

NSO donates 24 cycles to Malawi Electoral Commission: Mbendera laments transport situation

NSO donates 24 cycles to Malawi Electoral Commission: Mbendera laments transport situation

Transport problems at the Malawi Electoral Commission have forced its chairman, Justice Maxon Mbendera to come out in the opening appealing for support from well wishers to buy new vehicles.

MECcommissioners and staff test riding the cycles

MECcommissioners and staff test riding the cycles

Mbendera made the appeal on Monday, February 29, 2016 in Blantyre when his organization received a donation of 24 motorcycles from the National Statistical Office.

The MEC chairman lamented that current fleet at the Commission was aged and was supposed to be replaced in 2013 but government bought only 10 land cruisers which are used by Commissioners.

“The use of aged fleet for the secretariat has increased maintenance costs which erode all our funding for recurrent transactions.

“We will appreciate if other institutions of good will would emulate the gesture by NSO and assisted in transportation,” he appealed.

Mbendera went on to praise the NSO for the good relationship enjoyed with the Commission as it has been providing statistics on which MEC bases most of its electoral planning estimates.

“For the May 2014 elections, NSO did a noble gesture by lending us 50 motorcycles which were deployed to the councils. The gesture by the NSO during 2014 elections helped minimize the transport challenges faced at council level by our staff in the run up to the May 2014 elections because our staff could use the motorcycles for errands that did not require them carry bulk materials,” he said.

He said of the 50 cycles MEC returned 26 to NSO and was grateful that the statistics body had decided to transfer ownership of the remaining 24 to MEC.

“This is a big boost to us. We will proceed to deploy these motorcycles to the councils where at the moment they do not have any means of mobility. At the moment our district staff have to beg for transport from other government departments,” he said

In her remarks, Commissioner for National Statistics, Mercy Kanyuka said her organization decided to donate the cycles to MEC to ease the transport challenges at the electoral body.

Kanyuka said her organization lent 50 motorcycles to the Commission in the run up to the May 2014 Tripartite Elections and they were deployed to the councils.

“We asked for MEC to return the motorcycles and before the exercise was finished we got another request from MEC to lend them the motorcycles to be used for the coming demarcation exercise.

“Considering the genuine need and the nature of the elections work, that it is a continuous process, we decided to hand over the motorcycle to MEC,” she said.

Me without You

This small accessory could make or break your business attire

By BANU IBRAHIM

“It’s all in the details” is especially true when it comes to men’s suiting. This is the reason why small accessories, like cufflinks and pocket squares, have become so important in the black tie world — not only do they bring together a look, but they also add a bit of excitement to an often standardized mode of dressing. The same theory can be applied to socks. Take Pair of Thieves for example: the brain child of Cash Warren, Alan Stuart and David Ehrenberg aimed to help make men look cooler from head to toe (literally).

It all started when Stuart and Warren were back in high school and would wear funky designers socks over their white athletic ones. So when the time came to conceptualize a business, the two knew exactly where to turn to; “Over the years, we talked a lot about what type of brand we would build if we had the opportunity and we kept coming back to what we were most passionate about…socks.” Teaming up with Ehrenberg who knew the manufacturing ins and outs of the apparel industry, the trio created Pair of Thieves. As Warren notes, “It was love at first sight. We all shared a vision of how to disrupt the commoditized men’s basics category by combining performance, design and affordability in a way that hadn’t been done.”

Their passion and vision paid off. Pulling inspiration from their everyday lives, The Pair of Thieves team made a name for themselves in the fashion world by creating designs that are fun, but also completely wearable in any person’s day-to-day wardrobe. Not to mention, their bright, geometric accessories are probably the easiest way to make workwear dressing actually cool.

So if you’re looking for some advice on taking your suits to the next level, who better to answer your pressing accessory questions than Warren himself.

Ahead, Warren dishes his insider tips that will help you become the smartest, best-dressed and most interesting man in the boardroom.

Give us your elevator pitch to someone who is on the fence about adding color to their business attire.
According to a recent study conducted by the most reputable brain mechanics specialists, your mental state for the day is determined the moment you put on your socks. Meaning, you have a better chance of being the cartoon character with the black rain cloud above your head if you are wearing boring ill-fitting socks. If you want the seas to part and money to fall down from the sky into your pocket you will put Pair of Thieves on your feet tomorrow morning.

This past Men’s Fashion Week proved that plaids are the next big suiting trend. What do you recommend for people who want to do patterns on patterns, without it looking too over the top?
I’m all for patterns on patterns as long as you have a simple color story. Crazy colors on top of complex patterns can be a bit much at times. If you wouldn’t wear it no one else will.

There’s very much an unspoken rule that for black suits, you have to wear black socks. What’s your alternative for men who want to spice up a monochromatic look?
The all black sock is tired and drunk. In each of our collections we try to include a couple of designs that are appropriate to wear with a black suit or tux but a little pop of color to let your personality shine through. When was the last time you received compliments from matching your all black socks with a black suit? Never. I’d recommend wearing our Ojama Shimasu or Mr Cathead designs with your black suit.

Pair of Thieves Mr. Cathead, $10; Pair of Thieves Ojama Shimasu, $10. All styles are available at PairOfThieves.com.

What is the biggest styling mistake most men make when it comes to business wear?
A lot of men still wear those razor thin dress socks that go up to your knee…and then after a couple of washes the socks lose their elasticity and get “drunk”. The Worst.

What are you favorite socks to lighten up a dark pair of jeans?
Runs with Pride, Sorry Suzanne or Sockagawea are my go to pairs when wanting to lighten it up a bit.

Pair of Thieves Sorry Suzanne, $10; Pair of Thieves Runs With Pride, $10; Pair of Thieves Sockagawea, $10. All styles are available on PairOfThieves.com.

If you could give one piece of fashion advice to men out there, what would it be?
Grown ups: Burn those cargo shorts, give away any outfit that looks good on a teenager and toss those awful, silky, drunk dress socks in the garbage.

Pot health claims exaggerated

Re “Pot initiatives fail to give public health proper priority” (Forum, Another View, Feb. 21): Rachel Barry and Stanton Glantz’s suggestion to reject proposed citizens initiatives based on their personal health findings is flawed and frightening. Marijuana should not be treated similar to tobacco, which kills more than 1,000 Americans daily and causes cancer. It should be treated similar to alcohol and be socially acceptable for responsible adults to use.

The implication that cannabis causes cancer, even though there isn’t one single case of cancer recorded, ignores the facts. Rather cannabis has proven safe, and it’s less addictive than coffee.

Further, legalizing the plant does not suddenly create an “unrestrained marijuana market.” The black market has been unrestrained and thriving for decades. The only difference is, once legalized, citizens force government to regulate the plant rather than forcing the black market to regulate it.

Stan White, Dillon, Colo.

Prioritize health over pot profit

To make a profit, a recreational marijuana industry will need to preserve the product and prolong its shelf life by adding chemicals that will include fungicides and pesticides.

McClintock carries on GOP tradition

Re “McClintock takes gavel, while Yosemite quakes” (Forum, Feb. 21): One of the unanimous agreements signed during the Paris summit on the environment was a pledge to minimize, or eliminate wherever possible, the cutting of forests. Trees are the Earth’s lungs: They absorb carbon dioxide and monoxide, and expel oxygen. McClintock missed school the day they taught this in biology class.

As the article suggests, his motto concerning national forests is “Cut, baby, cut!” McClintock has always been in the pocket of industries that rape the land: lumber, coal, oil, industrial farming. In spite of science and facts, McClintock continues to deny that climate change exists and, as the article shows, does not mind lying to serve his masters.

McClintock chairs the subcommittee that oversees federal lands. This is typically Republican: appoint as chairmen people who aim to destroy the activities they oversee. McClintock carries the GOP tradition of destroying public lands for the benefit of his donors.

John Garon, Placerville

Ho, hum; another McClintock attack

One has to love The Sacramento Bee’s one side fits all policy. Environmental writer Matt Weiser quotes the always fair and objective environmental activist/extremist John Buckley calling Rep. Tom McClintock a liar because they disagree about forest management and what amenities should be available in Yosemite.

The Bee’s contempt for McClintock has been obvious. We get that. Funny how he keeps getting elected.

James W. Rushford,

Sacramento

Have a serious discussion, please

Problems facing national forests and rural communities cannot be so easily solved, nor as easily condemned as Matt Weiser, John Buckley and Bob Johnston indicate in the article regarding Rep. Tom McClintock. From tree mortality to the decrease of revenue in rural counties hindering the ability of school districts to educate children – these problems need real collaborative solutions carried out with integrity and understanding of the best available science.

Finding resolutions involves people meeting with best intentions to pursue answers to these serious issues. The article by Weiser hurts these ongoing efforts and serves no real purpose, except one born of animosity. Many people who are currently working to find the best collaborative solutions agree that hyperbole, condemnation, accusation and vitriol have no place. Too bad The Sacramento Bee chose to publish an unfortunate and juvenile article that harms ongoing efforts and promotes political partisanship.

Amy Granat, Clarksburg

Bringing light to prostate cancer

Re “It’s too late to prevent cancer in his family” (Forum, Feb. 21): We fellow travelers owe prostate cancer victim Gerald Haslam our eternal gratitude for bringing that affliction out of the shadows through the story of his own difficult journey.

Many can now take comfort in knowing that we needn’t suffer in silence or remain relegated to the low end of the cancer victim hierarchy, as we endure the travails of this all-too-common disease.

Spencer P. Le Gate,

Sacramento

Be aware of prostate cancer

As a prostate cancer survivor, I share Gerald Haslam’s advice when he states, “early detection is the key to survival.” All men should be aware that prostate cancer is a deadly disease that kills an American man every 20 minutes.

American Cancer Society’s data indicates that the 5-year survival rate is 100 percent when prostate cancer is detected and treated in its early stage. Unfortunately, when prostate cancer is detected late and it has spread throughout a man’s body, the 5-year survival rate drops to 28 percent.

The California Prostate Cancer Coalition recommends that every man have a baseline PSA test at age 40. For men in a high-risk group, such as the Haslam family, and African Americans, they should have their baseline PSA test at age 35. The PSA test is a simple blood test, which can be conducted in the family doctor’s office.

William Doss, Rocklin

Scalia had a negative impact

Re “Scalia’s impact felt far beyond his written opinions” (Forum, Feb. 21): Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was a champion of the “originalist” or “original intent” interpretation of the Constitution, in reference to the intent of the Founding Fathers. The “original intent” of the authors was that women not have a vote, that it was OK for white people to own black people as property. Things evolve; consciousness and knowledge increase as time passes. Those are good things.

Therefore, the U.S. should not be constrained when creating and administering its laws by the limited knowledge and poor moral standards of the era in which the Constitution was written. Were the Founding Fathers alive today and writing a constitution, their “original intent” would be vastly different than it was in the late 18th century. Some of them might even be Founding Mothers or black people. Most people would think that a good thing.

Richard Vidan, Orangevale

Jefferson provides some context

We cannot discern the “intent” of the Founding Fathers by simply reading groups of words, e.g. “well regulated militia” and “progress of science and useful arts,” absent the reading of published thoughts of the Founders contemporaneously.

An example will suffice. In a letter to James Madison in 1789, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “No society can make a perpetual constitution or even perpetual law. The earth belongs to the living generation; they may manage it, then, and what proceeds from it, as they please, during their usufruct.”

Gary S. Gilbert, Fair Oaks

Water law vs. flood risk

Re “The year drought turned to deluge” (Editorials, Feb. 21): California has a partly broken system for water management for the American River watershed. The editorial described management of flood risks by dumping about three-quarters of the American River’s flow downstream, past Folsom Dam. Another article described a new law requiring $500 penalties for watering lawns soon after rain.

Here in El Dorado County, most of us are required to reduce our consumption of American River water by 28 percent. Can’t upstream consumers of American River water and flood protection both benefit by allowing more consumptive use of this water, instead of less, at this time of year?

Paul Raveling,

El Dorado Hills

Millennials should vote for policies

Re “It’s OK to support Clinton because she’s a woman” (Forum, Feb. 21): Writer Rebecca LaVally, like Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem, depicts contempt toward millennials as expected by now from the Clinton campaign. As LaVally writes, “Today many millennials no doubt believe the fight is won and done.”

As a young progressive, I am alarmed that age discrimination is casually tossed out to readers. If LaVally researched the views of millennials, she would find that we care deeply about gender equality. In a 2013 Pew Research Center survey, three-quarters of millennial women believed gender inequality exists in the workplace, on par with baby boomers and more than Generation X.

I read LaVally’s piece as an assault on my generation and, personally, me. Essentially, LaVally is shaming us into ignoring policy proposals, and I hope fellow millennials vote for their policy preferences.

Benjamin Brumer, Woodland

These women aren’t for Clinton

Re “Clinton and women voters” (Forum, Drawing Board, Feb. 14): News flash to Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem and Madeline Albright: None of the women in my family will be in hell, but we are definitely not voting for Hillary Clinton. We are weary of them claiming they speak for all women. We are women, proud of it and value all women and their rights, especially those in the womb who cannot speak for themselves.

Glenda R. Smith,

Carmichael

Car restorers enjoy Classics in Atlantic City Car Show

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Tony Gambardella bought his 1956 Ford Pro Street Wagon for $20,000, fixed it up a little bit, and now it is worth close to $34,000.

Gambardella is just one of many vendors at the 43rd annual Classics in Atlantic City Car Show who have invested in older vehicles to fix up and sell to the highest bidder.

Gambardella, owner of Gambardella Racing and Performance in Williamstown, put $1,500 worth of sanding and restoration into his street wagon, and though it is valued even higher, he is looking to sell the car for $29,000 over the weekend.

“That’s the whole game of it,” Gambardella told The Press of Atlantic City (http://bit.ly/21BkON9 ).

But sadly, some vendors are parting with cars they don’t necessarily want to sell.

Tony Lanz, 38, of Middlesex County, drove out to Michigan and invested $10,000 in a 1974 Black Chevelle — the same model he had when he was a teenager.

He then put another $15,000 in restoration in the car but has since found himself without a garage to house the shiny ride.

Now, after a total of $25,000 invested into the vehicle, Lanz finds himself looking to sell it for $18,000.

“I know I’m going to regret selling this, but I just don’t have a place to put it,” Lanz said. “I hate to see it go, but you have to do what you have to do.”

For others, the event, which expects to see 30,000-40,000 people throughout the weekend, is a time to show off finished projects.

Shawn Wark, 31, of Berlin, built a Batmobile replica along with a Speed Racer replica. He said he doesn’t plan to auction them, though, as he just finished the car before the show, but instead wanted to show it off.

But Wark is looking to sell his 1928 Willy’s Overland Whippet and 1929 Lasalle Five Passenger Phaeton.

Wark said he did little cosmetic restoration to the vehicles — to keep the nostalgia factor of the cars.

With torn seats, a worn steering wheel and even a license plate that reads “historic,” the car looks like it came out of a time machine. And Wark thinks that can make it more marketable.

“Mechanically it was just a simple overhaul and just a couple thousand dollars,” Wark said. “Now it adds the value of being a running, driving and useable car. Cosmetically it’s not perfect but it’s able to be used as is.”

Wark said this type of nostalgia really resonates with the audience at the show.

“The difference is these are rarer and more unique so I wouldn’t touch it,” Wark said.

And Jeffery Patton knows that not all restoration can be seen on the outside.

Patton, 54, of Atco, invested $15,000 into his 1939 Chevrolet Pickup. But you wouldn’t necessarily believe that with the chipping paint and rough exterior.

Patton is asking $15,000 for the new alternator, rebuilt transmission, fixed engine and new breaks he’s put into it.

He wants to find someone who, like him, would want to add to the restoration.

“I bought this thing on Ebay. I’m not looking to break the bank. I’m just looking to break even,” Patton said.
