James Cook: For the health of your congregation

Working as a hospital chaplain now for more than 20 years I have seen first hand the difficulty of accessing and navigating the health care system. It is increasingly important that we continue to find ways of promoting healthy lifestyles in our community, including our church and faith communities.

Most health problems are preventable and related to our lifestyles. Our faith and our God expects us to go and teach, preach and heal. As a pastor, as a parishioner, we must ask ourselves what is the physical health of our church? We know that church provides and supports spiritual health, but we must begin to ask what I must do to take care of the body God has given us. What are the resources available for our church to become healthier?

The church can bring a holistic approach and perspective to communities understanding of health, integrating the mind, body and spirit. What better place where all the elements of health and healing can be discussed. Our churches are able to reach people of all ages, races, faith, religion and economic backgrounds. Our churches can strongly influence people’s values and personal life choices. One of the intentions of church is to have active and engaging programs of learning regarding spiritual health and our well being for people of all ages.

Just in the last two years NHRMC has developed the Congregational Health Ministry program. We have since partnered with more than 30 churches and community agencies in Rowan, Cabarrus, Davie and Davidson Counties. Our churches and community need to utilize and understand the many resources available to them when it comes to your health and navigating the healthcare system.

We provide an array of speakers and educational material on topics such as: cardiac, women’s health, men’s health and utilizing our mobile mammography. It is important for our faith communities to be engaged in becoming healthier, to help their parishioners manage their diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

In a partnership with area local churches, Rowan Medical Center will work with a congregational health promoter, a representative from your church to identify needs specific to your congregation. Anyone who is interested in serving as a health advocate in a faith community can become a Congregational Health Promoter.

Congregational Health Ministries at Rowan Medical Center provides access to an extensive network of community health resources to our faith communities.

Motorcyclist killed fleeing from police

SPANAWAY, Wash. —

A 23-year-old man was killed in an early morning accident on southbound State Route 7 at the Roy Y in Spanaway. The Roy Y is where State Route 7 and State Route 507 split. It happened just before 1 a.m.

A nearby resident says that drivers tend to go too fast and there are often accidents.

Speed was likely a contributing factor in this crash as well. A witness says that two motorcycles were trying to outrun police and were travelling over 100 miles per hour.

Police had seen a group of four motorcycles traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to stop them on SR 7 near 132nd Street East.

Two of the riders stopped and the other two kept going. Police followed to try and find the riders but did not turn on their lights or sirens.

Police came upon the crash at the crash at the Roy Y and immediately shut down the road. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The other rider has not been located. The road was closed for just under four hours for the investigation and cleanup.

The name of the rider will not be released until next of kin can be notified.

Leon Morris and Marty Nutt win motorcycle races at Cadwell Park

Ref:A01048

Published: 27 August 2014

A packed Bank Holiday crowd were treated to two thrilling races over the weekend with Leon Morris and Marty Nutt taking a win each.

Leon Morris, Carl Cox Motorsport/ P&H Motorcycles increased his lead in the Ducati TriOptions Cup title fight with a win and a third place at Cadwell Park. Marty Nutt the Ducati Coventry rider took the win in Race Two while Dennis Hobbs had to settle for two second places over the weekend.

Leon Morris, Dennis Hobbs and Marty Nutt at Cadwell Park.

In race one Morris lined up on the front row behind team mate Dennis Hobbs on pole with 2013 Champion Marty Nutt third on the grid.  It was however Morris that led Hobbs and Nutt into the first corner and would hold this lead for the majority of the race, with Hobbs close behind and Nutt watching the battle unfold in third. Despite all three riders maintaining the same positions this was not a procession as Morris and Hobbs swapped places over the closing third of the race. Unfortunately Hobbs was unable to make any overtakes stick and he had to settle for second place behind Morris with Nutt coming home in a close third.

Morris went into race two with a 26 point lead and with only two more rounds was keen to consolidate his championship lead. Having set the fastest lap in race 1, Morris started from pole with the race being designated a wet race as the forecast rain made conditions and visibility tricky for the Ducati TriOptions riders.

Marty Nutt beats Dennis Hobbs to the line at Cadwell Park.

It was Morris who again led into the first corner followed by championship rivals Hobbs and Nutt. Immediately the front three pulled out a four second lead over fourth placed Guiver with Nutt putting a fastest lap on lap three. Hobbs was hounding Morris but Morris in turn responded with a fastest lap, the three were showing an impressive pace considering the wet track and had soon increased the gap between third and fourth by over seven seconds.

“Overall a good weekend with a win yesterday and a third today in really tricky conditions”, Morris said. “The key for me is having dry conditions which are much more predictable whereas today was not. Today I felt really strong and felt like I could go with them and win the race.  I have increased my lead by a couple more points over the weekend and won the event overall so it’s been a blinding weekend.”

68-year-old Dek Crutchlow father of Cal Crutchlow guest rides in Ducati TriOptions Cup.

Dennis Hobbs’ persistence paid off on lap six passing Morris through Coppice and immediately pulling away. Now Morris had Nutt to contend with as the Irishman put in yet another fastest lap and soon Nutt was to move into second place and close in on the P&H Motorcycles 899 Panigale of Dennis Hobbs. Meanwhile Morris was falling back on the leading two and could only watch as Nutt took Hobbs at Hall Bends on lap 8. Hobbs did his best to take the lead back but with backmarkers coming into play had to settle for his second 2nd place of the weekend.

Sean Neary had a disappointing race one after crashing out on the first lap at Mansfield but recovered in race two with an 8th position. Rob Guiver (Hyside Motorcycles) put behind him a DNF at Oulton with a fourth and a seventh place, while the rider of the weekend was Fast Bikes journalist Al Fagan who continued his good form with two sixth places.

Not all the attention was on the championship leaders as one of the stories of the weekend was the return to racing at the age of 68 of Dek Crutchlow, father of Ducati MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow. Dek rode the Ducati UK 899 Panigale guest bike to a 20th place in race one and 21st in race two.

Charles E. Duryea, a pioneer in the automobile industry, was a stubborn man.

When other automakers in the first decade of the 20th century began using steering wheels instead of tillers (a movable pole), Duryea was convinced tillers were better.

His 1907 Buggyaut, for example, was controlled by a tiller that not only steered the car, but switched gears and regulated speed. His factory in Reading built what he called “the scientific auto.”

It may have been scientific, but it was not successful, according to Kendra Cook, curator at the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, which includes the Buggyaut and five other Duryea automobiles in its extensive collection of horse-drawn and motorized vehicles mostly made in Pennsylvania. These include carriages, wagons and sleighs, as well as gasoline-, steam-, and electric-powered autos.

“He didn’t care what the customer wanted. He had no business sense whatever,” Cook said of Duryea, whose auto company (producing about 100 cars a year) went bankrupt.

Duryea and his brother Frank built one of the first American gasoline-powered automobiles in 1893. They became the first American auto manufacturer when their Duryea Motor Wagon Co. assembled 13 horseless carriages at a factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1896.

After the brothers had a falling out, Charles started his own plant in Reading in 1900. Reading was a hub of early auto manufacturing because of its railroad network and access to raw materials.

The nonprofit museum will honor the Duryeas and other automotive pioneers when it holds the 49th annual Duryea Day this Saturday at Boyertown Community Park on Madison Street. The event will include hundreds of antique autos on display, a flea market, food booths and music. Visitors may take a trolley bus to the museum to see early automobiles made by long-forgotten companies and individuals. They include:

n The oldest gasoline-powered auto in the collection, made from carriage parts by James F. Hill, a mechanically inclined man from Fleetwood, Berks County. Cook said the vehicle used a steam engine when built around 1872, but it is unknown when Hill converted it to gasoline power. The chain-driven buggy, with a wooden body and wooden-spoke wheels, was one of the earliest autos powered by an internal combustion engine.

n A 1907 Dragon five-passenger touring car made in Philadelphia, painted royal blue with gold stripes. “It’s pretty, but it’s not a well-operating car,” Cook said.

n A yellow 1914 Dile Model A Sports Roadster, built in Reading. The car’s name combined the first two letters of the last names of its makers, Frank Dick and Irving Lengel. Intended to compete with the Ford Model T, the Dile flopped because its $695 pricetag was a then-substantial $200 more than the Model T, according to Cook.

n Two Biddles, a green 1915 model and a tan 1918 roadster. This car was produced in Philadelphia and New York from 1914 to 1922.

n A dark-green 1922 touring car made by the Daniels Motor Co. of Reading. This luxury auto, costing a whopping $5,000 (equivalent to more than $70,000 today), couldn’t compete with better-known luxury brands, such as Packard, Peerless and Pierce-Arrow, Cook noted.

Many of the hundreds of American car companies that emerged in the early 1900s previously made carriages or bicycles. The Boyertown museum shows the transition from vehicles powered by horse or man to cars and trucks using engines.

“What makes us different is we have all kinds of vehicles, not just cars,” Cook said. “I like the evolution of it.”

The museum is housed in the former factory building of the Boyertown Auto Body Works, which operated from 1926 to 1990 and produced vehicles such as an olive 1950 U.S Post Office delivery truck and a Mister Softee ice cream truck (both on display). Also on site is the former Jeremiah Sweinhart Carriage Factory, where carriages, sleighs and farm vehicles were produced from 1872 to 1914.

The late Paul Hafer, owner of the body works, founded the museum in 1965 with horse-drawn and motorized vehicles he had collected.

Besides vehicles, the museum has installed a 1921 cottage-style gas station that originally was in Strausstown, Berks County, and became a Sun Oil Co. outlet in the 1940s; and the Reading Diner, complete with a marble countertop, red-leather stools and wooden booths, which was built in New Jersey in 1938 and was on Route 422 in Exeter Township, just east of Reading. Converted into Fegely’s Family Restaurant in 1950, the original diner was saved and restored by the museum after the restaurant closed in 2003.

Diner Day, at which the public may buy coffee and pie at 1938 prices and eat inside the diner, is held several times a year. The next one will be Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Are These Sex Toys or Fishing Lures? You Decide!

Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll sit in a boat drinking beer all day thinking up sex idioms for angling terminology: pole, rod, happy hooker, trouser trout, jerk your line, master baiter, tadpole, whopper, honey hole, bobber, nightcrawler, plunk the worm, tippet, bamboo, sand spike, and lunker to name a few.

So it’s not surprising that the names of many fishing lures sound like sex toys. Can you tell which one goes in your tackle box or hers? The people in this video had a tough time guessing—but maybe you’ll have better luck.

Boys and Their Toys: Understanding Men by Understanding Their Relationship with Gadgets

“The key to understanding men is in understanding how they relate to their gadgets. Just because they may seem to show more interest in their computers…or their remote controls…or their fancy watches or their power mowers or their stereos…doesn’t mean that their toys are really the most important things in their life. In “Boys and Their Toys”, bestselling author Bill Adler, Jr. explains how men use toys to assert their independence and freedom, relieve stress, connect to their lost childhood, and even express their nurturing side (without having to admit it). Written in Adler’s fun, humorous style, the book reveals how women can: learn how a man’s interest in particular “toys” can be used to predict his behavior; know when a guy’s passion for gadgets crosses the line into obsession and what to do about it; take advantage of the human-gadget relationship to improve the human-human relationship. Smart and funny, “Boys and Their Toys” helps readers understand what makes their men tick…and grow closer with them in the process.”

Spiffy Clean with Vehicle Describing

The technique of detailed cleaning, shaving and cleaning of a car in both the inside as well as

exterior sides in order to create a fixed top quality detail level is called as vehicle detailing.

It can be exercised as a kind of individual inclination as well as fulfillment or can also be

gotten ready for classy vehicles which include that look of every auto. Different components of

car detailing consist of shaving, polishing and also claying.

When it comes to indoor outlining, it typically involves general cleansing of the car’s indoor

using brushers, vacuums as well as liquid cleaners. Detailing of engine entails the cleansing of

the engine area from grease and dirt utilizing versatile cleaners and also degreasers.

Outlining and also its Processes

There is truly no particular tip when it pertains to outlining but exactly what makes sure is that

it is thought about as additional thorough compared to just cleansing as a result of the various

attributes that it sets out for a vehicle owner. Specifying frequently entails a lot of steps more

than washing. The major target of detailing is mainly fixated the defense as well as improvement

of the vehicle.

Not only that, some are additionally concentrated on small solutions like paint repair services as

well as repair of surface as well as total cleaning instead of one’s auto that is typically

dismissed merely by regular cleansing like the underchassis, tires, engine, trim and wheels.

The sequence of detailing the exterior of the vehicle paint is from wash, dry, polishing,

polishing, sealer and also shaving. Application of polish is based upon the person’s choice which

is completely optional and with the application of both wax and also sealer. The vital thing is,

cleansing is kept at an adequate standing. Hair shampoos, degreasers, gloss, protectants, waxes,

cleaners and lubes are developed via time to meet different demands of professionals and

consumers.

Describing could either be an individual habit or solution. Polishing has various objectives like

eliminating swirls, water deposits, scrapes, oxidation and various other paint blemishes. Whereas

clay bars are used to get rid of any type of kind of contamination that could injure the auto,

brightening could take out blemishes on the automobile’s surface. Normally, brightening is thought

about as one of the most time consuming part of outside detailing.

Typically, there are 2 groups of polishes: abrasive or chemical. Unpleasant polishes could

eliminate a smaller section of the auto’s clearcoart. Unpleasant polishes can be classified based

upon the item’s abrasive homes. Massaging Compound is thought about as the abrasion that could get

rid of swirls, greatly made scrapes, and oxidation too. It can be regarded as a refined item of

sandpaper. The minimal abrasion is called finishing gloss which is used to remove great scrapes

and also lighter swirls and also oxidations. It is also used for the removal of haze that cause

the application of an abrasive polish that has even more unpleasant materials.

Sealers and Shaving Purposes

Polymer and also sealants synthetically made are based which give additional toughness than the

carnauba wax. These are fluid which are used in form which is similar to liquid wax. Polishing can

further boost the deepness and gloss of paint and provide a shorter yet long-term protection. Wax

could come in many types like paste, fluid as well as lotion. Waxes might contain carnauba that

contains huge quantities of fatty acids.

These fatty acids make a strong layer in between the outside world and the paint which, on the

other hand, protects the automobile and gives it a glossy surface. Waxes which are artificial mix

high quantities of ultraviolet rays and also less amounts of cleaners which are regarded to as

inhibitors to develop the similar safety layer that the carnauba does.
