Super-slimmer sheds a THIRD of his bodyweight and now urges other men to follow suit

A man who lost a THIRD of his bodyweight thanks to dedicated dieting is urging other blokes to do the same.

Les Hutchinson, 58, used to weigh in at a whopping 21st 8lbs when he decided enough was enough.

But despite his resolve, it too genuine courage for him to walk through the doors of his local Slimming World.

Les said it can be hard for men to admit that they need help to lose weight and especially difficult to walk through the doors of a weigh loss club for the first time.

He told the Macclesfield Express: “When men want to lose weight they usually think about exercising more or following a diet on their own, not joining a group like Slimming World, so it was a big step for me but one I’m definitely glad I took.

“When I went to the group for the first time, I was worried that I’d be the only man there and stand out like a sore thumb.

“It didn’t feel like that at all though, everyone was really welcoming and all of the members made an effort to help me feel like part of the group.

“Ultimately it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, younger or older, because everyone in that group is there for the same reason – to lose weight, improve their health and feel better about themselves.”

Les said the support of the group helped him lose an impressive seven stone – a third of his body weight – dropping to 14st 7.5lbs.

He said: “I couldn’t believe how easy I found it to start making changes and how quickly I noticed a difference in myself – from the first week, actually.

“Before I joined Slimming World I didn’t think that eating healthily would ever leave me feeling satisfied and I expected to be hungry all the time while I was losing weight, but I found I could still enjoy all my favourite meals, from a curry with rice to steak, chips and salad, by making them differently.”

Les’s achievement saw him reach the semi-finals of Slimming World’s Man of the Year 2015 contest, where he got to meet soap star and model Gemma Atkinson.

Jayne Burslem, who runs the Poynton group which Les attends, said: “Men often think that slimming clubs like Slimming World are female-only environments.

“Yet with six in 10 men classed as overweight or obese compared to five in 10 women, more men than women need support to slim down and improve their health.

“It’s fantastic to see blokes like Les showing everyone that Slimming World is a man’s world too.”

Fashion blurs lines between feminine and masculine clothes

by RUTH LA FERLA

Each time Kimberly Wesson sheds her customary trousers and button-front shirt to put on a flowery dress, she suspects something is off.

“I feel like I’m dressing up in someone else’s clothes,” Wesson said the other day over chilled rosé at her studio in downtown Manhattan.

Her frills-averse approach to dress has tested the tolerance of well-meaning friends. “It’s gotten to the point where they’re pleading, ‘Put on a sequin skirt,"” she said. “Or ‘Dress up like Joan from “Mad Men.”‘”

Not likely. Wesson and Aimee Cho, her business partner, have, after all, poured their style convictions into 1.61, a year-old gender-free label built largely on loosefitting trousers, swagger coats and easy shirts – items that they wear themselves and offer in varying sizes to women and men.

They are among the latest in a raft of designers to capitalise on fashion’s gender blur, that narrowing of the sexual divide that emerged on the runways this year of top-tier designers like Rick Owens and Alessandro Michele of Gucci, each bent on eroding the once rigid demarcation between conventionally feminine and masculine clothes.

True, the trend today derives much of its impetus from fashion’s fixation with the late ’60s and early ’70s, as younger consumers, and those in their thrall, resurrect a moment when unisex was largely the province of rock royalty, the sequins-and-kimono-wearing likes of Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie.

The news is that the movement has gained traction and a measure of cool it hasn’t known since that earliest incarnation, its latter-day grooviness the outgrowth of a loosened-up cultural climate.

“Five years ago we were weren’t ready for this,” said Humberto Leon, a founder of Opening Ceremony, the vanguard shop on Howard Street, and a longtime proponent of gender-fluid fashion.

“The difference today is that this trend has a label,” Leon said. “And it’s gained acceptance by a mass audience.”

Ken Downing, fashion director of Neiman Marcus, was more emphatic.

“What we’re seeing now,” he said, “is a seismic shift in fashion, a widening acceptance of a style with no boundaries, one that reflects the way young people dress.”

It’s a concept that chimes with the thinking of designers like Rad Hourani, whose gender-free show in January featured models in gender-concealing masks; it informs Nicopanda, Nicola Formichetti’s collection of gender-neutral streetwear; it has inspired Hood by Air and Public School and, before them, Owens and Martin Margiela, whose collections made hash of a binary gender divide.

Recently Miuccia Prada, who has subtly put forward a neounisex look in the past, felt compelled to weigh in, telling Style.com this summer, “More and more, it feels instinctively right to translate the same idea for both genders.”

And now a handful of younger Americans – among them the designers of 1.61, Telfar and 69 Worldwide in Los Angeles – are advancing the cause, showing identical pieces aimed at both sexes and striking a chord that is clearly in tune with the times.

“The whole perception of sexual orientation is being challenged by the millennials,” said Lucie Greene, worldwide director of JWT Intelligence, the trend-forecasting arm of J. Walter Thompson.

“Among the cohort of 12-to-19-year-olds defining Generation Z, the lines between male and female are becoming increasing blurred.”

Trendwatchers describe a cohort that bridles at being boxed in and tends to shrug off conventional gender labels and other rigid classifiers.

It’s a generation drawn to brands, yet skeptical of branding and pre-packaged looks. Low-key and logo-chary, its members often shop at stores like Muji, Uniqlo and Everlane online for simple, self-effacing uniforms.

Some may well be drawn to Telfar, an 11-year-old company in New York.

At New York Fashion Week in September, its designer, Telfar Clemens, will show his one-look-fits-all collection of off-the-shoulder tank tops, trench coats and lacelike denim tops and trousers on a cast of androgynous models.

Clemens has stealthily worked the TC logo into many of those pieces, but, he said, “it’s against my nature to do anything really overt. The branding is almost subliminal.”

Practically speaking, gender-neutrality is a boon for designers, said Justin O’Shea, buying director for Mytheresa.com.

As he told the online trade publication Business of Fashion last month, designers, by showing men’s and women’s looks in tandem, are saving time and money, and honing an identity.

Whether mingling sexes on the runway or creating a single garment intended for both sexes, they are speaking to a sympathetic public.

“The modern consumer wants to be part of a bigger picture, part of a movement,” O’Shea said.

That sentiment also reflects a rising receptivity, if not an outright prurient fascination, with topics that were once strictly off limits.

Transgender narratives are entering the mainstream via trans-models like Andreja Pejic and Lea T, who front major fashion and beauty campaigns; mega-celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner; and television fare like Transparent, the series on Amazon, its lead character Mort (Jeffrey Tambor) coming out to his children as Maura.

Responding to a shift in mood, progressive merchants like Acne, Vince and Rag & Bone display men’s and women’s clothes in proximity, some occasionally mixing them on the racks.

This year, Selfridges in London dedicated a significant swath of its selling space to Agender, a store-within-the-store where gender-fluid labels like Nicopanda, Ann Demeulemeester and Yang Li commingle.

Ed Burstell, general manager of Liberty of London, called the move “enlightened”.

“To devote a full bank of windows and all that real estate for something that could have gone either way was a risk,” he said.

“But it forced that conversation that we need to have.”

While Liberty itself has no similar merchandising plans, unisex items make up about 25 per cent of the store’s fall fashion purchases, he said.

Many women freely embrace the notion of gender fluidity, buying menswear in small sizes at stores like Odin, Cadet and Dover Street Market.

At Gucci, the sales staff reports that more women than men are buying the pussy-bow blouses from Michele’s fall men’s collection, just now arriving at the stores.

Men, on the other hand, “have traditionally been immune to gender-neutral fashion trends”, said Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell, a fashion historian and author of Fashion Victims: Dress at the Court of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette.

“We may think we are in a new phase, but we aren’t necessarily,” she said.

“What we’re talking about is the leading edge of fashion, not what you’re going to find at J. Crew.”

“Still”, Chrisman-Campbell said, “every time these trends come up they push the boundaries a little bit more.”

Giving the trend a push are artists and professional outliers.

“This is very feminine,” Coleman Feltes, a disc jockey and music curator, said of his button-front shirt, exuberantly patterned with daisies, roses and butterflies.

Feltes, who was heading home to the financial district with his children last week, had rendered his look street-worthy by combining it with camouflage shorts.

“The camo,” he said, self-assured, “takes away from the floweriness.”

Inevitably, some at fashion’s leading edge have already moved on, questioning whether unisex is a trend at all or, as some have suggested, a passing illusion pulled from a stylist’s bag of tricks.

“Our clients have been there, done that,” said Judson Harmon, owner of Odd, a four-year-old shop on the Lower East Side that made its name with nongender-specific offerings, its message reinforced by a mannequin, half male, half female, that greets visitors.

That mannequin will be coming down, Harmon said.

“We’re not abandoning the versatility of unisex. We’re just not targeting it.”

Sexual Health (5) ... Men-o-pause!

Sexual Health (5) … Men-o-pause!

MENOPAUSE is the time when a woman naturally stops to menstruate. It marks the end of the woman’s reproductive years.

Although this can happen anytime between 40 and 55 years, the time of menopause averages around 50 years. This does not just happen suddenly. It is not an event like a birthday. It is a long, gradual process of lowering hormone levels.

When the reproductive hormones begin to fall below the level necessary to signal the uterine lining to thicken and gather blood (for possible pregnancy), the menstrual cycle flows become less and irregular and eventually stop alltogether. The ovaries stop producing eggs.

In addition to regulating the menstrual cycle and reproduction, the two female hormones – oestrogen and progesterone – assist with mineral balance, sugar control and response to stresses like inflammation. Thus, lack of these two hormones lead to multiple symptoms in a woman.

These symptoms can start up to six years before menopause and continue for several years after the final menstrual period. The most common symptom is that of hot flashes or flushes. This usually comes suddenly as heat starting from the chest up to the face, lasting a few seconds to minutes. This results in sweating and even palpitations. It may be severe enough to wake a woman from her sleep.

Other symptoms include: sleeping disturbances; weight gain and bloating; mood changes like irritability; changes in the menstrual cycle, such as bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex or bleeding that is heavier or lighter than usual; loss of bladder control and frequent bladder infections; lack of sexual desire; dryness of the vagina with concomitant painful sexual intercourse; breast pain; depression; bone pains; fatigue; lack of concentration and short-term memory and headache.

Not all women have these symptoms, yet they all have a drop in their hormonal levels. The symptoms may be mild, not requiring more than an explanation and reassurance. Or they can be so severe as to cause major disruption of the woman’s life. We have treated women who were convinced that they were going completely mental! Leading a stressful life can cause the symptoms to be more severe.

The symptoms are usually more severe earlier in the postmenopausal period and become less as the years progress.
Menopause occurs earlier in women who smoke or consume lots of alcohol or caffeine and in women who receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer.

Treatment for these symptoms need to be individualised. This ensures that specific risk factors for individual women are taken into consideration.

Women can help themselves by leading a healthier lifestyle: avoid consuming lots of sugary foods like chocolate; avoid toxins; do regular physical exercises; reduce your alcohol intake; do not smoke; manage your stress levels; do not eat too late in the evening.
The mainstay treatment for the hot flashes is hormone replacement therapy. Estrogen (for women who’ve had a hysterectomy) and a combination of estrogen and progesterone are given to relieve the hot flashes.

Other benefits of hormonal replacement therapy include: reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancy during the peri-menopausal period and avoiding the irregularity of menstrual periods.

There have been concerns of these hormones causing breast cancer, but detailed research has shown that-given for a shorter period early in the peri – and postmenopausal period – the benefits outweigh the risks. Your doctor will give you the treatment with the lowest effective dose of the hormones and evaluate periodically if you still need to continue the treatment.

For osteoporosis, specific medicines exist. Your doctor will discuss these with you and decide on what suits your situation best. Estrogen replacement helps with preventing bone loss as well. But regular weight-bearing exercises like jogging, also help.
For vaginal and urinary symptoms, estrogen replacement will relief most. Water-based lubricants are recommended for mild vaginal dryness.

At the end, menopause needs to be expected and understood. It is a natural stage for every woman who lives long enough. Managing it is easier if the woman knows what to expect. The doctor’s role is to explain the symptoms and give treatment to relieve the more troublesome symptoms.

For the rest, live a reflective, relaxed life and you will get through this interesting phase of your life with relative ease.

Royal Enfield confirms North American motorcycle head office

The official announcement came from Royal Enfield today, confirming the reports from Clutch and Chrome as well as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel of its new North American headquarters.

The motorcycle manufacturer is considering the North American headquarters its first wholly owned subsidiary outside India. According to the press release, this strategic announcement is in line with Royal Enfield’s international focus on leading and expanding the global mid-sized motorcycle segment of 250 to 750cc, with North America representing a priority market for the company.

Royal Enfield is adding ‘the fastest growing motorcycle company in the world’ to its corporate tagline of ‘the oldest motorcycle company in continuous production’.

“Royal Enfield has been growing at over 50% year-on-year for the last five years. With a proven business model, today we are one of the largest mid-size motorcycle manufacturers in the world. With our increased efficiencies and scale of manufacturing we are strategically positioned to make effective business inroads within international markets, including the United States,” said Mr. Rudratej Singh, president, Royal Enfield.

A division of publicly traded Eicher Motors Limited, its current product line-up in North America includes the iconic Bullet 500cc, Classic 500cc and the Continental GT 535cc cafe racer ranging from $4,995 to $5,995.

Royal Enfield has been exporting motorcycles to North America for 15 years through an independent distributor. There are currently a total of seventy-four dealerships selling the legendary Enfield around the U.S. and yes, we did count those ourselves.

“Motorcycles and the riding culture is robust in North America and it is certainly a growth market for us. A wholly owned subsidiary company in the region allows us to be closer to our customers and significantly enhance their product and ownership experience, with a wider footprint and robust after-sales service network. We are confident that with our current and future product line we will re-invigorate the mid-sized motorcycle segment in the US with motorcycles that are holistic in their approach and are great fun to ride, both in the cities and on back country roads,” Mr. Rudratej Singh said.

Royal Enfield Bullet EFI

Led by an executive team and senior leadership with deep motorcycle category experience, newly-formed Royal Enfield North America will immediately take over operations, marketing, communications, sales, warranty, service, dealership development and finance for the company across the U.S. and Canada.

As reported in Clutch and Chrome’s news story dated 18th August, 2015, the company’s North American Headquarters, along with a new flagship company-owned dealership, will be located in Milwaukee, WI.

“Our motorcycles are inspired by the classic bikes throughout motorcycling history, in form and in simplicity; and they capture the feeling of freedom, fun and responsiveness that riders were trying to achieve then, and brings it into the modern context,” Mr. Siddhartha Lal, CEO, Royal Enfield said, “Royal Enfields are possibly the most engaging mid-size motorcycles out there. We use traditional craftsmanship and modern technology as a means to achieve the perfect balance between the rider, the machine and the terrain.”

The company’s regional office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the leadership team will be led by Rod Copes, President, Royal Enfield North America, responsible for managing its operation in the market including marketing, communications, sales, warranty, service, dealership development and finance.

All manufacturing will continue to remain in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India where Royal Enfield has been manufacturing since 1955. Global headquarters will continue to reside in Gurgaon, Haryana, India.

“In a post-performance era where American riders are looking for machines that are easy to own and maintain, Royal Enfield offers evocative and unintimidating modern classic motorcycles, with timeless appeal,” said Rod Copes, President Royal Enfield North America, “Royal Enfield’s first fully branded retail store in the United States will soon be launched in Milwaukee that will retail its entire product line-up of motorcycles and gear.”

The oldest motorcycle company in continuous production, Royal Enfield made its first motorcycle in 1901. A division of Eicher Motors Limited, Royal Enfield has created the mid-size motorcycle segment in India with its unique and distinctive modern classic motorcycles. An overview of the company’s rich history can be found in our previous story.

“Over the next 18 months we plan to launch several such stores in key metropolitan areas across the US. We are also focusing on building a strong independent dealer network that will maximize our brand awareness and sales,” Rod continues.

In 2014, Royal Enfield sold more than 300,000 motorcycles globally. Parent company, Eicher Motors Ltd., recorded its highest ever total revenue of $1.4 billion USD, with large contributions from the Royal Enfield business unit.

“While Royal Enfield continues to strengthen its presence in the market, our previous distributors, Classic Motor Works (CMW), located in Fairbault, MN will be transitioning out of distributing Royal Enfield motorcycles by the end of 2015,” added Rod.

Calgary man's Second World War medals stolen

Pat Hartigan believes his father would have given those responsible for stealing the Second World War veteran’s medals a second chance.

Sgt. Daniel Hartigan, who parachuted into Normandy ahead of the Allied D-Day invasion of 1944, died in 2001, leaving his campaign medals to his son.

But those cherished mementos of his father’s valiant service were stolen from the younger Hartigan’s Hawkwood home July 21, leading to a public appeal Tuesday for their return.

“What my dad would say is that people deserve a second chance,” said Hartigan, who also had jewelry, watches and silverware taken during the heist.

“I think he’d say they deserve a second chance to return the medals and make it right.”

The elder Hartigan was injured by shrapnel as his 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion dropped behind enemy lines to help pave the way for the Allied beachhead at Normandy that broke the backs of their Nazi foes.

His son said that didn’t deter him long from returning to the field to battle 10 straight days without sleep to help win the most pivotal battle of the Second World War.

The stolen medals are reflections of his service, and Hartigan said the family is desperate to see them returned.

Calgary police Staff Sgt. Doug Crippen said while medals do come with some value to those trying to hock them, it’s nothing compared to the value of the items as memories for both the veterans and their families.

“They have some value, but more value to the family,” he said, adding it wouldn’t be unusual to see the pilfered prizes posted to a site like Kijiji.

Pat Hartigan said he’s hopeful the precious medals will be found.

“There seems to be a good recovery rate thanks to the Internet and police,” he said.

If you have any information about the stolen medals or the break-in call police at 403-266-1234 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Royal Enfield sets motorcycle road trip for US headquarters

One of the older motorcycle brands in the world is officially making its way across the Atlantic and starting their ride in North America.

Rick Barrett of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday morning Royal Enfield will open its North American headquarters as early as the end of the year. While there are a total of seventy-four dealerships selling the legendary Enfield around the U.S. not only will the new headquarters coordinate the motorcycle manufacturer’s North American operations but also open a company-owned showroom.

Royal Enfield Motors will locate its North American headquarters and a dealership in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward under the watchful eye of Rod Copes, president of Royal Enfield North America and former Harley-Davidson executive. Enjoying a career at Harley that spanned nearly twenty years, it should be no surprise he considers Milwaukee the American heart of motorcycle manufacturing.

“I live here, so I am biased. But in my mind, Milwaukee is kind of the center of motorcycling in the United States,” Copes told Barrett during an interview.

For riders who like some history with the motorcycle they ride, Royal Enfield would be among the top of the list. The company legitimately claims to be the world’s oldest motorcycle company in continuous production with its legacy dating back to 1893. That was the year the Enfield Manufacturing Company was formed to manufacture bicycles and adopting the branding of Royal Enfield.

The company’ motto of ‘Made like a gun’ came from a legacy of manufacturing weapons with the corporate logo making a clear association. After experimenting with a heavy bicycle frame fitted with a Minerva engine clamped to the front downtube, Enfield built their first motorcycle in 1901 with a 239 cc engine.

The then British motorcycle manufacturer continued to improve its two-wheeled technology making appearances at racing venues in the early 1900’s. Enjoying military contracts during the first and second world wars the company produced a range of successful motorcycles.

From the smaller 250cc motorcycles which were popular in England because it didn’t require a full license to ride, to its larger bike the 700cc Royal Enfield Constellation Twin which has been described as the first Superbike, Royal Enfield experienced success throughout its range of models.

But as with many motorcycle manufacturers around the globe, Royal Enfield was hit hard by the onslaught of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers in the late sixties and early seventies. Enfield built a model made largely for the US market, sporting a lot of chrome and strong performance, it completed the quarter mile in less than 13 seconds at speeds well above 105 mph. Ironically, the motorcycle was so popular production couldn’t keep up with demand adding to the demise of this last English-made Royal Enfield.

It could be said these events were preparing the company, and more importantly the Royal Enfield brand, for its next chapter.

From the current Royal Enfield line up – Cafe inspired Continental GT

Royal Enfield motorcycles had been sold in India since 1949 with production for that market coming from a newly formed ‘Enfield India’. This company assembled the 350 cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle under license from Royal Enfield and by 1957, tooling equipment was sold to Enfield India so that they could manufacture its own components.

Where the British company faced stiff global competition, Enfield India enjoyed an ongoing contract to produce motorcycles for India’ police and army.

Royal Enfield India continued to manufacture and sell motorcycles in India, growing its sales to export to Europe as well as America, South Africa and Australia. Recently Royal Enfield has undergone a major retooling particularly in the engine department going from carbureted cast-iron engines to twin spark unit construction engines on all its models, with EFI available on their flagship 500 cc model.

The company is looking to expand its success in the United States with an obvious focus on the smaller engine, classical style motorcycle coming into favor with riders. It’s a segment of bikes which currently include Triumph, Ducati and for those who know their motorcycle history, Ural.

Ten motorcycles that remind us why we miss two-strokes

During the last 20 years two-stroke motorcycles have practically vanished from the streets, substituted by cleaner, safer and more reliable four-strokes. Their demise is unquestionably a good thing when it comes to air quality in big cities, but despite this many people still miss them, seeking solace in restorations and custom builds. For those who understand this nostalgia, here are ten modern motorcycles that keep the oil-burning spirit alive. Some are available to buy, although most of them can hardly be considered cheap, easy to find or environmentally-friendly. The dilemma, of course, is that they’re all likely to deliver a delicious ride.

In 1975 a certain Mr. Giacomo Agostini won the 500 cc class of the Grand Prix World Championship on a two-stroke Yamaha. After the historic triumph these machines whitewashed the field until 2001, when Valentino Rossi conquered his first 500GP title on a Honda NSR500; the last ever by a two-stroke smoker.

In off road racing the two-strokes had already made their mark by the mid-1950s, going on to dominate the scene in the early 1960s.

Giacomo Agostini’s Yamaha YZR500 OW23

Two-strokes have an outright advantage over any four-stroke; more power from equal displacement, less weight and easier servicing due to less moving parts in the engine. On the other hand, their disadvantages include shorter service life, increased fuel consumption, terrible emissions and a nasty disposition because of their narrow powerband.

Things started changing as the world grew more environmentally conscious and by the 1990s it was becoming obvious that the two-stroke era was coming to an end.

Honda presented the revolutionary EXP-2 two-stroke Activated Radical Combustion engine in 1995, raced it in a few Rally Raids to prove that it could be clean and efficient and then proceeded to kill its own project – despite successfully vindicating its own claims.

In 1998 Yamaha introduced the YZ400F, a revolutionary four-stroke motocross racer that produced incredible power at higher rpm than any four-stroke had ever achieved before. It was a game changer, and in just a few years the off-road racing world was turned upside down. By the early 2000s the two-strokes had been confined to a handful of competitors in every class – more of a niche than actually competitive motorcycles.

People have always been attracted to race replicas. “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” is an old adage of the motorsport world that has yet to be proven wrong. A new generation of hi-tech four-stroke machines dominated the global motorcycle market, a trend still holding strong today.

The factories are happy; four-strokes are more expensive, they need more parts and their service is equally costlier. The environment should be in a better place, having rid itself from those oil-burning smokers. Four-strokes are safer to ride, with a linear power delivery, engine braking and no unexpected outbursts from engines that suddenly hit a mountain of torque. But who really knows what kind of two-strokes we’d have if modern technology was applied to them? (We may yet find out if this recent Honda patent for a direct fuel injection, cleaner burning two-stroke is any indication).

Yamaha is the only Japanese factory to produce a 2015 two-stroke motocross YZ250

But people still want them. They are cheaper, lighter and more powerful, but despite some recent signs that the two-stroke might not have fallen completely off the agenda like this cleaner burning Honda patent design, the two-stroke doesn’t look likely to make a comeback anytime soon.

Today the only available two-strokes are off-road models. Road-going bikes have practically disappeared, with the exception of the 50 cc Aprilia RS4. The only choice for a die-hard two-stroke fan is to go for a used old model, or do something along the lines of the following ten motorcycles.

RDTZ 2-Stroke Attack by Roland Sands Design

Before emerging as a famous custom builder, Roland Sands was a motorcycle racer. When he accepted an invitation to the Born Free Motorcycle Show that took place in late June at Silverado, USA, he dove into his two-stroke racing past in order to draw inspiration for the custom he’d build for the show.

A few frames Sands had designed back in the day for racing Yamaha TZ250s were still laying around in his warehouse. Claiming they are the best frames ever designed for these motorcycles, he soon found a Yamaha RD400 engine to wedge on one of them – the RDTZ is named after these two donor bikes.

Sands selected a fine collection of race gear, the majority of which comes from his own stock pile of TZ parts and from Team Roberts’ shelves. These include a vintage triple clamp set, a rare dry clutch setup made up from parts gathered from all over the world and Performance Machine magnesium wheels from Sands’ own 1998 250GP championship-winning bike.

The engine was tuned by Ed Erlenbacher, an engineer with ample experience in two-stroke tuning, mated to a custom-made twin exhaust system.

In case you were wondering, the silver leafed inscription on the sides of the carbon fiber fairing reads “2-Stroke Attack” in Kanji.

“Fast, incredibly light and good handling, the RDTZ is a blast from the past and a look into the future of what custom bikes can be,” Sands says.

If you felt cupid’s arrow piercing your heart, you should know that this is a one-off build. Maybe you could convince him to make another – after all, he must still have some TZ frames sitting around in his shop.

NSR250R by TYGA Performance

If you like the good old 250GP race replicas of the 1980s and 1990s, Tyga Performance may be the specialists you need. Its English owners, Paul Pearmain and Matt Patterson, make no effort to hide their love for two-stroke racebikes and their Thailand-based company has a very long list of special parts to cater for every need.

Their latest creation is a tribute to Honda’s 1994 NSR250R MC28 and serves as a rolling showcase of their products. The parts’ list is too long to mention here, so we’ll just stick to the basics: VHM cylinder heads, Wiseco pistons, handmade Tyga exhausts, revalved CBR600RR forks, Ohlins shock and steering damper, RC45 triple tees, Brembo M4 monobloc calipers with CBR1000RR master cylinder, Marchesini magnesium rear wheel.

Add to these a collection of highly coveted HRC race parts, among many others including a magnesium front wheel, close ratio gearbox, Keihin 30 mm carburetors, swing arm, radiator, water pump and ignition system.

Believe it or not, the frame is a stock piece.

The engine is bored out to 300 cc and ported, reaching up to 70 hp (52.2 kW) for a ready to ride weight of 115 kg (253.5 ld). Compare that to the 40 hp (29.8 kW), 157 kg (346 lb) of the stock model and you get an idea of the two-stroke advantage.

Although the complete bike is not for sale, most of the parts on it are – minus some discontinued HRC items. Pearmain tells us that the carbon fairing will be available soon.

Surprisingly enough, this motorcycle is still registered in Thailand as a 1994 NSR and has all the equipment required to be ridden legally on the road by whoever dares to take this V2 two-stroke maniac for a stroll downtown.

Ronax 500

Anyone fancy a road-legal 500GP racebike? Ronax makes one and it may well be the only one of its kind in the world. Based in Dresden Germany, Ronax pays homage to the fire-breathing 500s that ruled the queen Grand Prix class for many years until Valentino Rossi’s championship on a Honda NSR500 in 2001.

The Ronax is powered by a bespoke fuel injected 80-degree V4 with two counter-rotating crankshafts, putting out 160 hp (119.3 kW) at 11,500 rpm. Combined with a wet weight of 145 kg (319.7 lb) this fiery two-stroke probably has more than enough to put modern superbikes to shame … at least before you factor in reliability.

Equipped with the typical gear, Ohlins suspension and Brembo brakes, the Ronax 500 is adorned with a black paint scheme and graphics reminiscent of Rossi’s NSR.

Production of the Ronax 500 is limited to 46 units. Brace yourself for the price though – €100,000 (US$111,000), with 30 percent advance payment and a 6-month waiting period. Every customer gets to choose the number he wants on his motorcycle, provided of course it hasn’t been already taken. For some reason we suspect number 46 will be the most sought after.

TZ Racer by Deus Ex Machina

The Yamaha TZ250 is a prime example of the motorcycles that Yamaha raced in the 250GP during the 1970s. This TZ is probably an example from the 1976-1980 era, before the power valve engine was introduced in 1981 to lift the TZ from strong competitor to all-conquering machine.

The TZ Racer was restored in California, USA, at the Deus Ex Machina workshop as a personal project by Motorcycle Design Director Michael Woolaway, with a lot of attention to detail and every intention of taking it racing.

The high-revving air-cooled engine is fed by two Micuni ZC carbs and produces 50 hp (37.3 kW) at 10,500 rpm, more than enough to make this lightweight racebike a real cracker on a race track.

Bimota V-Due

The news that Bimota was designing a two-stroke 500 cc road legal motorcycle to take on the superbikes was initially met with great enthusiasm in Italy. In 1997 the V-Due was introduced to the world, a 90-degree V2 that promised to solve the two main problems that plagued the two-strokes, emissions and service life, by means of advanced fuel injection system and forced lubrication for the bottom end of the engine.

Unfortunately for Bimota, the V-Due turned out to be an unrideable beast, with a horrifyingly unpredictable power delivery and, to top this, several reliability issues. Many of the 1997-1998 models were returned to the factory and in 1999 Bimota went bankrupt. The first motorcycle with an engine made by the Italian company was the one that killed it.

A group of Bimota engineers who had bought the company’s stock of V-Due motorcycles and parts modified the engine by tossing the injection for a pair of Dell Orto VHSB 39 carbs, reworked the lubrication system accordingly and in 1999 introduced the V-Due Evoluzione series. Having solved the problems that initially doomed the V-Due, it remained in limited production until the 2005 Edizione Finale.

The Evoluzione versions produce reliably 135 hp (100 kW), weigh 150 kg (331 lb) and allow their owners to enjoy the legendary handling that had made a name for the Italian boutique brand. These models have since become highly sought after collectibles, so anyone in the market for one should expect a salty price tag.

Husqvarna Wasted Years by Lorenzo Buratti

Lorenzo Buratti is an Italian designer with a passion for motorcycles. Most of his work is around designer items for the home, usually made out of wood and metal, occasionally mixed with the unexpected motorcycle part – like a boxer engine chair or a Vespa desk light. He also designs some elegant custom motorcycles, such as his latest creation which came about after he bought a very cheap 1999 Husqvarna WR360.

His inspiration was a streamlined speed record chaser, so there was a lot of work to be done on this old Swedish enduro bike. The frame was extensively redesigned to end up with a wider caster angle and the rear converted to a hardtail design. The Husky was equipped with a front suspension from a first generation Yamaha R6 and the front brake was completely removed.

The engine was rebuilt with original parts and fitted with a custom exhaust Buratti designed for performance, achieving a hefty 65 hp (48.5 kW) from the single cylinder two-stroke. Dressed in custom made fiberglass fairings and painted in flashy colors inspired by Evel Knievel, the end result weighs just 85 kg (187.4 lb).

Buratti was planning to take his custom to Bonneville for a run at the Speed Week, hoping to break the 200 km/h (125 mph) mark. This wouldn’t constitute a record, it would just be a target set for his satisfaction. Unfortunately Speed Week has been cancelled this year, so Buratti will have to either find another event to run his custom Husky, or wait another year.

In case you were wondering about the name: “Wasted Years is not only my favorite Iron Maiden song, it is also a common opinion I sometimes had to fight against,” explains Buratti. “This bike wants to be a tribute for all the people who believe in something, to people who put ideas and real soul in life and maybe not so much money.”

Ossa Copa 250 Grand Prix by Café Racer Dreams

Ossa built its fame on off-road race success, but also had a strong, yet short-lived presence in the road racing scene. In the late 1960s Ossa managed four race wins at the 250GP class before retiring from road racing after its star rider, Santiago Herrero, was killed at the Isle of Man on 1970.

This Grand Prix custom build is a tribute to those days, being based on a 1979 Ossa Copa 250. Spanish custom builders, Café Racer Dreams (CRD) subjected the donor model to a transformation process with older technology, removing the cast wheels and disc brakes in favor of spoked rims and ventilated drum brakes. The original frame was reinforced for extra rigidity and several features were designed to successfully replicate the vintage racing aura, such as the petrol tank and the tail unit.

After a full engine restoration and a new exhaust system, the suspension was upgraded with fresh units from Spain’s Betor. The whole build took three months to complete and by now the Copa 250 Grand Prix has been returned to its happy owner.

CRD will gladly undertake such projects – it might even be a nice change from the hordes of BMWs and Hondas that occupy most of its time.

500AF by Service Honda

Despite going out of production in 2001, the Honda CR500 is one of those motorcycles that will forever haunt our dreams. Thanks to companies like Service Honda from Indiana, USA, the legend doesn’t just live on, it thrives. These two-stroke lovers have prepared a special treat for those who would like to get a 500 missile on their hands.

The bike’s engine is housed in a brand new aluminum twin spar, semi cradle frame that can be customized to the customer’s ergonomics in order to (hopefully) help tame all the insane power that this engine produces.

The 500AF (for Aluminum Frame) boasts a collection of parts one would expect to see on every top of the line modern four-stroke off-roader, including adjustable Showa suspension, Service Honda’s aluminum swing arm, FMF Q-series or Pro Circuit 296 series exhaust and, of course, a steering damper. The latter is a welcome aid in the effort to keep the front wheel in line when opening the throttle on a machine that produces almost twice the torque of contemporary open class off-road models.

Customization options including bodywork, suspension tuning and cylinder porting.

This is the motorcycle that many motocross and enduro fans around the world hoped Honda would produce. This two-stroke legend can still find its way to your garage, provided you are willing to part with at least US$13,499. Service Honda can also cater for customers in Europe, via its partners in UK, France and Denmark, as well as in Australia.

KX500AF by Service Kawasaki

Following the success Service Honda has enjoyed with the 500AF, a separate part of the same company prepared a similar model based on the green KX500. After reaching a special agreement with Kawasaki to supply them with brand new parts, the KX500AF was made available to the public in 2012.

The big KX is another monster of torque, benefiting from a Power Valve that controls the exhaust port in order to enhance power delivery over a wider rpm range – an upgrade that Honda never offered to the CR500. The base model also features a Kayaba AOS (Air-Oil Separate) fork and a Unitrak single rear suspension setup.

The starting price for the KX500AF by Service Kawasaki is US$18,499.

Maico 700

The CR500 and KX500 are monsters of torque, then there’s the Maico 700. The German company produced a variety of two-stroke off road machines, with the 700 being the most famous of all. It couldn’t have been any different, with the single cylinder 685 cc engine that was born in the US motocross sidecar racing scene eliminating every four-stroke competitor that stood against it.

Maico went bankrupt in 1986, but its motorcycles never disappeared. At one time they were sold in the USA by ATK, with the rebadged 700 Intimidator leading the charge. Since 1999 a German KTM dealer in Leverkusen is the only producer in the world to offer several Maico models, limited to around 50 motorcycles per year.

The contemporary Maicos feature WP suspension and modern bodywork, and they are available in Enduro, Motocross and Supermoto versions with capacities of 250, 320, 500 and 620 cc, plus the 685 cc bad boy. The Enduro and Supermoto models can be ordered with road-legal equipment, allowing legal registration in Germany.

Those dreaming of a two-stroke behemoth that produces 82 hp (61.1 kW) for 110 kg (242.5 lb) can visit the link below and prepare for a €11,995 (US$13,300) price tag.

Two-Stroke Smoke Candle

So getting your hands on a two-stroke can be a little difficult (and expensive) these days, but if you’re a true die-hard fan who pines for that oily aroma, Flying Tiger Motorcycles from Maplewood, Missouri, has just the thing.

The Two-Stroke Smoke Candle is made with real live two-stroke oil with “high-octane fragrance.” It costs $20 and we bet you can legally light it up even in California … plus the rest of us won’t have to put up with the fumes.

Penske cars have splitters replaced after inspection issue

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Team Penske replaced splitters on the cars of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski before Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway, and NASCAR said it would take the splitters back to the research and development center.

NASCAR said it worked with the team during prerace inspection and asked the team to err on the safe side by switching out the splitters. The change did not affect the starting position in the race for Keselowski and Logano.

“We had a splitter on the car we had used and cleaned up and when we went through tech, NASCAR felt it was close to the tolerances of pass/fail, so they asked us to put a new one on,” said Jeremy Troiano, a spokesman for Logano’s team. “We change splitters a few times per weekend if they are worn so it’s not an uncommon thing.”

Logano is second in the Cup standings and is coming off a win at Watkins Glen last weekend.

The Evolution Of Hairy Men: Why More Hair Attracts The Opposite Sex, Indicates Greater Health

Hairy chests

The guys of AsapSCIENCE get to the bottom of why some men are so hairy. torbakhopper, CC BY-ND 2.0

Everyone has hair, but why do men tend to have so much more of it? The guys of AsapSCIENCE recently looked to evolution for the answer.

“All humans have the same number of hair follicles as our primate ancestors, except our hair now is much more thin and unable to be seen by the human eye,”  the YouTube hosts explained on their second channel AsapTHOUGHT. “Throughout evolution it became an advantage to have thinner hair, and it’s thought to be this way because our ancestors were traveling far distances to find food and, in the heat, thick hair was a disadvantage.”

While men and women, too, have the same number of hair follicles, men have more of what’s called terminal hair: visible, thick hair that’s usually associated with the hair on a person’s head or pubic hair. Men have this hair “on their chest, back, and other places.” Women can also have hair in these places, but they have more vellus hair, which is hair that’s even thinner and harder to notice. Apparently, these differences have to do with sexual selection.

Male peacocks, for example, flash their tail feathers to display their fitness in order to attract potential mates. One theory even suggests hairy men are better able to detect parasites on their body, so females perceive more hair as a marker for greater, parasite-free health. It makes sense then biology professor Pavol Prokop has said hairless men are preferred more in areas closer to the equator, where there’s an increased number of parasites. So it may be men became hairier so it would be easier to attract potential partners.

Honda recalls CBR 150R and CBR 250R motorcycles manufactured between July 2014 to June ...

The Honda Motors on Friday announced that CBR 150R and CBR 250R models that have been manufactured between July 2014 to June 2015 in India would be recalled. The process would start from mid week of August as a measure to recheck and replace the starter relay switch if it belongs to the defective lot.

CBR 150R and CBR 250R CBR 150R and CBR 250R

The relay switch was seen to be defective on the very first instance. This can also increase the resistance across main fuse interrupting the motorcycle’s battery voltage to the electrical system. This means that all the defective Hondas would need to be rechecked for any kind of flaws.

All the bikes would be collected from the manufacturer and then the sealant would be replaced. The part would be replaced free of cost irrespective of the warranty status. This initiative is definitely destined to be good for all the Honda users.

An interruption in the battery voltage could also cause the engine to not start while riding and the starter could catch fire in the process. . Honda would also be committed to the customers with this initiative.
