Men's Health The Power Of Protein

112548812

Protein rich foods can help you get the lean, sculpted look you’ve been striving toward.

While lifting bigger, heavier weights is key to getting those guns in shape, it really won’t do much good if you’re not feeding your body the proper amount of protein (a vital part of achieving a high level of health and fitness.) Protein is a macronutrient that’s used to repair and build muscle mass after a tough strength workout. It also helps maintain, repair, and replenish skin, bones, teeth, hair, and other body structures.

Getting What You Need
If you workout regularly, .8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight would be an adequate total for the day. A simple rule to follow is to eat complete protein-rich foods (found in animal products, such as whole eggs, chicken, turkey, red meat, and milk) with every meal. This will give you a steady stream of protein throughout the day to help regulate blood sugar levels and aid fat burning.

Try consuming a carbohydrate- and protein-rich pre-workout meal of 250-300 calories, and a post-workout meal containing about 30-40 grams of protein 30-45 minutes after your workout. This replenishes your glycogen stores, repairs your body, and helps it recover for the next workout.

Wonderful Whey
Whey is the best post-workout protein to consume because it’s quickly and easily absorbed into the body. But unless you’re willing to drink glass after glass of this liquidy substance (you know, the stuff that Little Miss Muffet ate) which results from combining dairy milk with a coagulating agent, you might want to try powdered whey supplements instead.

These powders are available in concentrate (70-85% protein), isolate (90% protein), and hydrolyzed (95+% protein) forms. Whey concentrate is the least expensive, while hydrolyzed is the most expensive and preferred by bodybuilders.

By combining the raw power of protein and putting in those hours in the weight room, you’ll soon be showing off those well-formed muscles for years to come.

The Gay, Life-Affirming, Gun-Controlling Art of Christopher Buening

HUNTER The guy in this is probably six inches tall, and made of ceramic. Hes just called Hunter, but this dog wont hunt.

‘HUNTER’ The guy in this is probably six inches tall, and made of ceramic. He’s just called “Hunter,” but this dog won’t hunt. ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF THE ARTIST

Seattle artist Christopher Buening’s show at Gallery4Culture was called Hunter < Gatherer, as in hunter is less than gatherer, gatherer is greater than hunter. That’s the opposite of what his father taught him when he was growing up in Northern Wisconsin. His father, who “rabidly supports the NRA and is a staunch conservative,” initiated Buening into a super-masculine world of guns, woods, beer, and porn—but the son was gay. He liked his father’s world, but not for the reasons his father hoped.

Back then, as now, Buening genuinely wanted to gather objects together. When he was supposed to be shooting and killing, he’d be picking up neat and pretty things instead, or building forts, or watching birds. He remembers a moment when a chickadee actually perched on the barrel of his gun (depicted in the sculpture above), “fluffed himself up, and just rested there for a long while.” It was, he explains, “a defining moment in which I realized I was not really cut out to hunt and kill animals.”

Its all about the verb tense and the cursive lettering.

It’s all about the verb tense and the cursive lettering.

In It Was a Man’s World, Buening used white-out to write those words in unmanly cursive on top of a found painting on a slice of wood. It was a man’s world his father took him into all those years ago, so the piece is a nostalgic expression of a place from the past.

But I also read it as a wish for a time when that past tense will apply to the whole world. A time when the relationships between women, men, and other animals are governed more by love than by power and dominion.

I appreciate the way he pairs ink prints on wood depicting the men in the hunting cabin with etchings on mirrors that depict the innocence of his boy’s world. They come into such close contact, it feels unsafe for the boys.

    IMG_2770.jpg

Now that Buening is older, he uses gathering to build bulwarks against sorrow. He filled a wall of shelves with rainbowy ceramic vessels painted in nail polish, spray-paint, and glitter. Each pot he threw was intended to be an urn for someone he loves who has died; they each felt so inadequate that he just kept trying, kept making more, pitting life against death.

In celebration of this morning’s historic news from the Supreme Court that marriage is a right for all same-sex couples in all states—and as a remembrance of the violence visited on so many people by this “man’s world” we live in—I offer Buening’s message printed on found fabric.

You don’t have to shoot. Even if you’re being put up to it.

    Buening-UsedToShootMyGun.jpg

Hunter < Gatherer closed yesterday at Gallery4Culture, but he has a show at SOIL this August, and more work is on his website.

Progressive® Insurance Shares Latest Motorcycle Trends as Summer Riding Heats Up

MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio, Jun 25, 2015 (BUSINESS WIRE) — The summer travel season is peak time for passionate motorcycle riders and after a brutal winter, they’re anxious to make the most of every mile. If fact, more motorcycle riders are hitting the road than ever before with new motorcycle sales up more than eight percent through the first quarter, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. In light of that growth, Progressive® Insurance set out to see what useful information could be found by analyzing its own motorcycle claims data from the last year.

This Smart News Release features multimedia. View the full release here: http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20150625005896/en/

Progressive’s 2014 motorcycle claims data revealed that:

    • Four of the top 10 days with the highest claims for Progressive motorcycle customers fall in June.

    • Summer months – June, July and August – are when most motorcycle accidents happen, and Saturdays are the most dangerous days to ride. In fact, the top five days of the year with the most motorcycle claims are all Saturdays throughout the summer.

    • July is one of the most dangerous months for motorcycle riders, with the average number of claims being 79 percent higher in that month than the average for the rest of the year.

    • In 2014, there were more single-vehicle motorcycle claims than any other type. Progressive data shows there were more single-vehicle claims than the next three types put together which include rear-end accidents, intersection accidents and stolen motorcycles.

“Riders and drivers should always be alert when driving, and summer holidays require even more vigilance,” said Scott Hall, Progressive’s motorcycle product manager. “While many motorcycle accidents can involve other vehicles, most are single-vehicle incidents, which is something motorcycle riders should be aware of. This winter was absolutely brutal on roadways across the country, so looking ahead for potholes and leaving plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you will help avoid accidents.”

To keep both riders and bikes protected, Progressive suggests the following essential coverages and offers flexible limits based on your budget:

    • Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability: Covers you if you’re at fault for an accident that injures another person or damages someone’s property.

    • Comprehensive Coverage: Pays to repair or replace your motorcycle if it’s stolen or damaged.

    • Collision Coverage: Pays to repair your motorcycle when you collide with another vehicle or object.

    • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: Provides coverage when the person at fault for an accident doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

    • Roadside Assistance: If your motorcycle breaks down, Progressive’s Roadside Assistance will pay to tow it to the nearest qualified repair facility. Roadside Assistance also covers the necessary labor costs at the place of breakdown when your motorcycle or off-road vehicle is disabled.

J Palmer Studio highlights designer's creativity, confidence

It’s one thing to undertake some form of creativity as a hobby, it’s quite another to step out into the world and declare your creativity to be your business.

It takes skill, confidence in your abilities and constant hard work. One local man who has set up shop through his creativity is women’s fashion designer Jonathan Palmer.

“It was always a confidence thing for me,” Palmer said, discussing his formative entry into the world of fashion. “Since back in middle school, I noticed that when I dressed well, I got better results; I got compliments.”

Long before The J Palmer Studio was a glimmer in his imagination, Palmer was rummaging around for materials to create clothing from.

“I was using hot glue guns and bedsheets, bed skirts — just playing around,” he said. “I also used to take t-shirts and cut them up — then I used to have to hide them so that I didn’t get in trouble.”

Between splattering paint on his own clothing and taking influence from his older brother’s insistence that he should dress well, Palmer began to consider fashion design as a career. Initially, he had grand ambitions to make his mark in the field of men’s fashion. Attending design school in Nashville changed that.

“Before I went to school, I thought I’d do some women’s fashion but focusing on men’s. I thought I was going to change the whole game for men,” he said. “But what I learned is that your everyday men don’t really care. I thought, no, there’s no money in that. For women you can do a lot more.”

Since graduating in 2013, Palmer has been focusing on building his own brand. His designs have been showcased in industry events, such as the Bronner Brothers International Beauty Show in Atlanta, and he has designed a gown to be worn on the red carpet at the upcoming BET Awards in Los Angeles.

“I’m excited and humbled by it — especially for a guy from a small town, you feel like it’s too much for you,” he said of the attention his designs have been gaining as of late. “Particularly when I first started, I would turn down red carpet dresses. I would make excuses that I couldn’t do it because I felt like it was too big for me. Throughout the years people encouraged me, and I’m taking on bigger jobs now.”

The majority of Palmer’s clientele tend not to be in the market for red carpet wear, however. Rather, he seeks to provide couture evening wear for ladies’ nights out, weddings and events.

“I’ve been working with pageants, but also for business events and book releases,” he said. “It’s to make a woman feel empowered — that’s something I pull emotionally from myself. When I dressed better I got better results. I want to give that to somebody else — and for a cheaper price.”

Usually one would expect high-end evening wear designers to base themselves where the big markets are. Palmer, however, claims basing his business in Clarksville to be an important decision.

“I feel like in my heart staying in Clarksville is the plan. People keep telling me I should be moving to New York, but I feel like I should be here,” he said. “I really want to bring a designer like me to Clarksville, to Nashville, to Tennessee. We don’t have that here.”

Aside from providing bespoke, elegant, affordable designs to the women of Tennessee, Palmer has plans to expand his business to pay tribute to an essential aspect of his journey.

“I’m looking to branch out over the next 10 years to also own a hair salon,” he said, adding that he cut, styled and applied hair extensions while attending school. “Cutting hair helped me pay my way through school and helped me to network with people in the fashion industry. It helped me put on my first shows, and helped me to travel.”

Montoya chasing Triple Crown as IndyCar heads to Fontana

Only one driver has celebrated winning the Triple Crown of IndyCar in the same calendar year. Juan Pablo Montoya will try to stay in contention for the sweep when he races Saturday at Auto Club Speedway in California.

Montoya won the Indianapolis 500 in May, the first of three 500-mile races on the IndyCar calendar. Up next is the 250-lap race in Fontana, California, and then the 200-lap race at Pocono Raceway on Aug. 23.

Al Unser is the only driver to have won the Triple Crown, and he did it 1978 by winning Indianapolis, Pocono and at Ontario, California. That was the same year Affirmed won horse racing’s Triple Crown — and American Pharaoh became the first horse to duplicate the feat since earlier this month.

Montoya, the current IndyCar points leader, doesn’t put much stock in the similarities. But he’s rested after a week off from racing and eager to get to California.

“Now that we had an off weekend to catch our breath and regroup, I am happy with where we are as we head into the final six races of the year,” he said. “We’ve been able to mix in a lot of consistency with our two wins, but we need to get at least one more before the end of the year. Fontana and Pocono would be great tracks to do that for the Triple Crown.”

The Triple Crown series was part of Indy car racing from 1971 until 1980. After Ontario closed in 1980, it was replaced by Michigan International Speedway and the Triple Crown continued until 1989. It resumed in 2013 when Pocono was added to the IndyCar schedule.

Montoya won at Pocono last year. He has never won at California.

“The Triple Crown is not something that I really focus on,” Montoya said. “Only one team is able to win the Triple Crown this year and it’s ours, so that is a cool feeling.”

SHELBY GT350R-C DEBUT: Ford will debut its new Shelby GT350R-C this weekend at Watkins Glen.

The competition version of the iconic car will compete in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, a showdown of performance cars from around the world.

The GT350R production car was unveiled in January, and is one of more than 12 new vehicles Ford Performance will bring to market through 2020.

“Like so many Mustangs before it, the Shelby GT350R is a car born to race,” said Dave Pericak, director, Global Ford Performance.

Both production and race car versions feature the first-ever production car V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft.

Multimatic Motorsports will manage the race team and field drivers Billy Johnson, Scott Maxwell, Austin Cindric and Jade Buford this weekend at Watkins Glen.

“American muscle cars have a storied history in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, and we eagerly anticipate the start of a new chapter with introduction of the Shelby GT350R-C,” said Scott Atherton, president of IMSA. “Mustang has earned icon status through its racing heritage going back to the competition Mustangs of the 1960s, and this new race car will undoubtedly add to the legend.”

NBC LINEUP: NBC Sports Group will return to live coverage of NASCAR next weekend at Daytona International Raceway.

It will be the network’s first on-air broadcast of a NASCAR event since 2006, and NBC Sports on Wednesday announced its coverage team.

Rick Allen joins 21-time NASCAR Sprint Cup winning driver Jeff Burton and Daytona 500 champion crew chief Steve Letarte in the broadcast booth.

Krista Voda will sit alongside Kyle Petty and Dale Jarrett from an open-air studio located atop pit road at Daytona. Rutledge Wood will present features pieces, while Marty Snider, Kelli Stavast, Mike Massaro, and Dave Burns will cover pit road during the races.

ESPY’S-BEST DRIVER: Five drivers spanning three series have been nominated for “Best Driver” at the upcoming ESPY Awards.

Among them are Team Penske teammates Will Power and Juan Pablo Montoya. Power was nominated for winning last year’s IndyCar championship, while Montoya’s victory in the Indianapolis 500 last May earned him the nod.

The award has been won the last two years by IndyCar driver Ryan Hunter-Reay.

“Racing is all I ever wanted to do — to be acknowledged by one of the leaders in the sports world is something that means a lot to me,” Power said of the nomination. “Ryan Hunter-Reay brought the award back to IndyCar for the last two years, and I hope I can keep it here.”

Also nominated were reigning NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick, reigning Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton and 2014 NHRA Pro Stock Champion Erica Enders-Stevens, who has already been named “Racer of the Year” by Racer Magazine.

Men more likely to talk about suicidal thoughts with loved ones than doctor, Black Dog Institute ...

A national study has found men are more likely to discuss suicidal thinking with trusted acquaintances like family, friends or partners than health clinicians.

The research by not-for-profit the Black Dog Institute aims to identify ways to prevent male suicides, which account for about 75 per cent of the total Australian figure.

Lead researcher and clinical psychologist Doctor Michael Player said the study showed many men wanted help, but were not getting it.

“Men actually do want help,” he said.

“Unfortunately we don’t have a really good dialogue or opportunity for men to talk about their mental health.

“This goes back to the way we have been brought up.

“We haven’t had really good role models that have shown adequate ways to deal with mental health issues.”

The suicide rate is double what the road toll is, yet we don’t have ads on the television as we do have for road deaths.

Dr Michael Player, Black Dog Institute

As part of the institute’s study, 35 males who had attempted to take their own life within the last six to 18 months, as well as 47 friends and family members of men in that situation, were interviewed face-to-face.

The interviewees were from a variety of urban and regional settings nationwide.

There was also an Australia-wide online survey undertaken as part of the qualitative research.

“We were looking at how to interrupt a suicide attempt, what helped and what kept men safe,” Dr Player said.

    Non-judgemental, honest discussion works best

Dr Michael Player said they found the majority of men wanted intervention to prevent suicide, but they did not want to ask for help.

Ways to help men at risk of suicide identified by Black Dog Institute study

To interrupt a spiralling mood, men in the survey talked about the importance of:

    • Being listened to with an open mind without judgment

    • Male bonding activities like camping and fishing, as an opportunity to talk to someone trusted and respected

    • Spontaneous physical activities

    • Giving back through voluntary work for a sense of contribution and connectedness

Men suggested family and friends could interrupt a spiralling mood by:

    • Organising activities to ‘get them out of their head’

    • Give men positive feedback about their worth and create a sanctuary where men could talk about distressing feelings

    • Increase their social connectedness

    • Normalise distress

Specific strategies recommended for friends and family of men at risk:

    • Setting small achievable goals and encouraging them to do more things for themselves helped build positive momentum

    • Some men described friend or family just turning up for a visit as a helpful interruption to negative thinking

    • Professional help

    • Building skills in emotion regulation and building a vocabulary for men to talk about feelings

Preventing suicide for men at acute suicide risk involved more traditional measures:

    • Involuntary admissions to mental health facilities

    • Removal of means to harm themselves

    • Not leaving their side

    • Exploring and talking about the impact of his suicide on others

“There is clear evidence that comes from the paper – that men want to accept help” he said.

“But it has got to be from the right person, being that person that they trust and respect.”

Dr Player, who is a clinical psychologist in the Sydney public health system, said there was a fine balance between helping and being invasive.

“But if you notice something, you have to ask a question,” he said.

“We often found that the trigger for an attempt was something in isolation that was actually quite minor but it was just part of a train of stresses or unpleasant events over a period of time.

“You have to be looking at the chronicity of someone’s distressed mood, isolation and they’re coping strategies like avoidance and numbing behaviours.”

Compounding the problem, he said many friends and family members were reluctant or even scared to ask the men in their lives about thoughts of suicide.

“Not being judgmental, being honest and open and calling it what it is helps,” Dr Player said.

“Just being direct and often opening the space for a male to talk will be enough to illicit a positive response.”

Dr Player said the men surveyed reported feeling significantly better after talking about their suicidal thinking, as opposed to feeling at a greater risk of self harm.

“Ninety-two per cent of the people that were in the study actually had improved mood after actually taking part in the study,” he said.

“It wasn’t a downer that made people depressed, so that was a really positive finding that we hope is translated to other research.

“Everyone underlined that you just keep persisting, even if it seems the man doesn’t want you to.”

Hospital, GP screening for suicide recommended

The Black Dog Institute said the study highlighted how much work was needed to better target programs for men at risk of suicide.

Dr Player said men often displayed signs of unhelpful coping like drinking, violence, drug use and other self harm.

“Men tend to convert their emotional pain into physical pain which is something they feel more adept to deal with,” he said.

“Men often give subtle warning signs, and they tend to be self-destructive warning signs like externalising behaviours like isolation and more irritability.

“So we need to screen for self-inflicted injuries or injuries as a result of risk taking or self harm or things like that.”

Dr Player said the findings suggested men needed to be more proactively screened by hospitals and health authorities.

“We need to be more proactive about screening men for suicide when they present at a GP or Emergency Departments with these externalising sort of behaviours,” he said.

    Suicide prevention not ‘popular’ cause

Dr Player expressed frustration about the lack of national discussion about suicide prevention, compared to other major social issues like domestic and family violence.

“Unfortunately we get a few high-profile suicides and there is a bit of a spotlight shown on the area for a short period of time, but it doesn’t seem to hold people’s interest,” he said.

“The suicide rate is double what the road toll is, yet we don’t have ads on the television as we do have for road deaths.”

Beyond Blue’s Movember Foundation donations provided the $100,000 funding for the qualitative research.

He said the study was published in open-source journal PLOS1, as it offered a quick review and publishing timeline and was available to everyone.

This story is part of a series exploring issues around suicide.

EXCLUSIVE: United Motorcycles sets up India office in Delhi, Diwali launch expected

United Motorcycles India - Delhi Office - 1

We cannot be amazed enough by the interest shown by our readers in United Motorcycles (UM) products. Ever since we covered the debut of the UM products at the 2014 Auto Expo, our office phone has been bombarded with queries about the motorcycles, some mistaking us to be a UM dealership. One of our readers, however, instead of inquiring about the motorcycles or the dealerships, updated us with the emergence of new UM contact point in Delhi. Being fully aware of the potential reader interest in the development, we immediately asked our colleague in Delhi to drop by at the given address and obtain more information. However, it turned out that this was not a dealership but a registered office of the motorcycle brand. The aforementioned office of UM is located in Okhla, New Delhi.

Click here for our exclusive interview with UM India Managing Director, Rajeev Mishra

Now although we were slightly disappointed to know that this was not a dealership or a full-fledged corporate office, we were happy to realize that UM has finally commenced its India operations and a registered office is already in place in the National Capital. Contrary to what we learnt from the UM top honchos in an exclusive interview, the officials at the Delhi office told us that the US based two-wheeler manufacturer will commence India operations around Diwali which is an auspicious occasion for many people to buy new vehicles. Despite having witnessed all the hiccups the motorcycle maker has faced in India thus far, we would like to remain optimistic and believe that the brand will begin its India operations in full swing by July end, which is also roughly the launch time indicated by UM India MD Rajeev Mishra in an exclusive conversation with Motoroids.

Upcoming Motorcycles 2015 - UM Motorcycles Renegade Limited - 2

With the sub-2 lakh motorcycle segment getting increasingly crowded with quality offerings, we believe it would be an uphill task for the US based motorcycle maker to match its competitors in sheer performance terms. The styling of its products, however, which has had our readers captivated for long now, may be an aspect that makes the brand stand apart from its peers. We have listed the model range of UM, along with their respective tech specs here. Do have a look and let us know your views about the chances of the new company making its mark in the Indian motorcycling scene through the comments section below.

    The quietest, loudest group

ROCKINGHAM — They have come to the county and spent one weekend here for the last seven years.

If it wasn’t for the rumble of their motorcycles, most people wouldn’t even know these visitors were even here.

That is just how Greg Scheuer, or “Edge” to most people, and Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood want it. They like knowing the thousands of bikers roar into Richmond County and the Sandhills, spend millions of dollars and then disappear almost as quickly as they appeared.

The 16th annual Smoke Out Rally has followed this blueprint for the last seven years it has been at “The Rock.” This has been what Edge has been doing since starting the event on a whim after meeting 75 people in a hotel parking lot in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

They embrace being an oxymoron — being the quietest, loudest group to ride into Richmond County.

Unfortunately, that was changed a little bit. Early Sunday morning two pedestrians were killed while attempting to cross U.S. 1 in Southern Pines. Richard Panarra, 49, and Michael Napolitano, 54, both of Jackson, New Jersey, were crossing the road near the entrance to Sizzlin’ Steak or Eggs when they were hit in the far outside southbound lane.

“It’s a tragedy. It’s awful,” Earwood said. “I feel for the families.”

    Event heads to the Sandhills

After starting in Tennessee, the Smoke Out Rally has called a handful of places home.

“We started in Pigeon Forge and then we went to the Indian reservation,” Edge said. “The Indian reservation was a dry reservation…that didn’t turn out to be a great fit. Then Salisbury and then Farmington and now to Rockingham. We really feel like we’re home.”

The rally, in Edge’s words, is all about the riders who build their own motorcycles or spend their time working and tinkering on them. They are a “subculture of the motorcycle culture.”

“It’s not just Harleys. It’s mainly all about the home builder,” Edge said. “The garage guy that is out there after work 11 at night, midnight, scraping his knuckles and creating a piece of artwork.”

Even though organizers declined to reveal the number of attendees at last year’s event, Smoke Out attracts people not only from the area, but the nation and world as well.

“We have people who have flown in from England, New Zealand,” Edge said. “We have all kinds of people from California…it’s very far from regional. For three years in a row, we had people ship their bikes in from New Zealand and ride to the event cross-country.

“It’s also unique in the sense that so many motorcycle rallies people trailer to, you won’t see a lot of trailers here unless they are camping and need it. We never had good attendance on Sunday because people actually ride their motorcycles and they leave Sunday to get back to work on Monday. It’s a Friday and Saturday show.”

More than just a motorcycle rally

While motorcycles are the stars of Smoke Out, there is more things than just showing it off or racing a buddy down the drag strip. There are bands, roller derby and countless other things that Edge claims aren’t organic, but are all part of the show.

“We want to have the persona of planned chaos — it should look like chaos but it’s actually unbelievably scripted and planned,” Edge said. “The idea is we want to have three things going on all the time and we want everybody to leave missing two or three cool things that happened and say, ‘Man, I wished I seen that, but did you see this? I got to come back next year.’”

    Impact on the Sandhills

Earwood said he visited several restaurants in the area this weekend and saw they had several Smoke Out visitors inside. Area hotels were also filled because of the event as well.

“There are easily 400 people out here working. I’ve never gotten the tax revenues from this county, but Farmington said they collected tax revenues on an extra $5 million,” Edge said. “We sell out hotels an hour from here.”

Earwood said in addition to the restaurants and hotels, the event helps grocery stores and other businesses with the added foot traffic.

“This is a great event, if it doesn’t come to Rockingham, it’s going to go somewhere. So why not Rockingham?” Earwood said. “Why shouldn’t we benefit from this many people coming to town and filling up our hotels, filling up our restaurants, buying gasoline at our gas stations, shopping at our Walmart, shopping at our independent shops downtown? So it’s worked out great for us.”

    Returning for years to come

Edge said Smoke Out seems to have found its home in Rockingham and “The Rock.”

He added there have been some cities that believed the event was more trouble than it was worth, but realized things weren’t as it seemed and wanted Smoke Out to stay.

“We were having some issues with Farmington because they thought we were going to be crazy bikers that would tear everything up,” Edge said. “They sued us to stop the rally and none of what they thought was going to happen was true or was ever true. They never talked to the previous place that had the rally. We decided to move to Rockingham before we ever did Famington. Halfway through Farmington, they apologized to us and asked to stay, but we already talked to Steve Earwood. Rockingham was such a great fit.”

Earwood agrees and is happy to have Smoke Out back year after year.

“It’s a fun event, it’s a unique event. I’m a racing guy and it’s a little bit away from racing, it’s more of a lifestyle event,” Earwood said. “This is what we have to do. This why I worked so hard to get Rugged Maniac here this past year. They had a great experience and they’re coming back twice next year. The more events we can like this in our community, the better for everybody.”

Edge wrapped things up by saying Smoke Out organizers have no plans to leave Rockingham as long as they are wanted here.

“If the people want us here, I don’t ever see us leaving. If the political climate is good, there is no reason to leave.”
