ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) — Friday afternoon, 1,000 motorcycles are expected to roll into Arlington.

According to police, motorcycles will head eastbound on I-66 between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. via the Dulles Toll Road before continuing southbound on Route 110 and arriving at the Double Tree hotel on Army Navy Drive. During that time, police will be implementing temporary road closures.

Please avoid the area and be prepared for delays.

A woman in the man's world of auto repair, Riverhead's new mechanic is 'talk of the town'

Riverhead’s newest auto mechanic is a woman, and although it’s the 21st century, that still raises eyebrows — even in a town that had a female auto mechanic for many years.

Raised eyebrows are nothing new for Chelsea Dispenziere, an auto technician with more than eight years’ experience who started working at Louie’s Auto Repair Shop on Sweezy Avenue this week.

“Some old-timers say they don’t want me to work on their car,” she said at the shop yesterday. Others even refuse to acknowledge she’s a mechanic. The resistance always comes from men, she says. “The women are fine with it.”

That kind of reaction doesn’t faze the 26-year-old mechanic with a flair for fixing automotive electronics. Everywhere she’s worked, Dispenziere says, she’s had to prove herself to her bosses, coworkers and customers.

The idea of a woman mechanic took the shop’s proprietor, Louie Waski by surprise, he admits. His friend, Scott Tocci, who is Dispenziere’s uncle, called him to see if he had work for his niece.

“He said, ‘I’ve got a girl coming from California and she’s really great,’” Waski recalled.

In his 30-plus years of experience, he’s only known one female mechanic, Peggy Smith, who worked for many years at Van Dyck and Yousik on East Main Street.

Dispenziere came in for a test; Louie and his wife Karen decided to hire her full-time.

“We saw how good she was,” he said. “She worked in a GM dealership and she’s very good with technical problems and electronics,” Waski said.

“Now she’s the talk of the town.”

Dispenziere, who spent some of her formative years in Riverhead, where her father, Mike lives before moving to California to live with her mother, became interested in cars at a very young age. She’s just always loved cars, she said. Starting with the very first car she owned, she loved working on them too.

Every step of the way, she’s had to prove herself — to teachers, potential bosses, bosses, co-workers and customers. It’s been a struggle her whole career.

When she arrived for work at Louie’s, Dispenziere brought her large mechanics’ tool chest. It contains everything a good mechanic needs to troubleshoot and repair vehicles. It also includes a box of the latex gloves she uses to keep her hands clean.

“I don’t tell people outside of work what I do for a living,” Dispenziere said as she worked under the hood of a Volkswagen sedan inside Louie’s shop yesterday afternoon. If she does let on that she works in an auto repair shop, “I tell them I mop floors,” she said with a wry smile.

Dispenziere, who is single, said she’s learned guys aren’t too keen on dating mechanics.

“When I go out, I wear dresses and heels and my nails are always done,” she said, pulling off one latex glove to show off her manicure.

“They never know,” she said, laughing.

Cav slams motorcycle safety

FORT HOOD, Texas – With a roar emanating from the muffler every time the throttle is twisted, a Soldier prepares to get evaluated on how well he implements safety measures as he rides.

Headquarters and Headquarters Troop “Hammer,” 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division provides motorcycle riders with experienced mentors to help stress the importance of safety while riding on a motorcycle on Fort Hood, Texas.

“I’ve been riding motorcycles my whole life,” said Sgt. 1st Class Corey Cornell, a Midland, Michigan, native and HHT motorcycle mentor . “It’s great being a mentor for Soldiers wanting to ride motorcycles. I’m able to teach them how to do it safely.”

Different reasons pull Soldiers to the powerful two-wheeled machines. While some like motorcycles because they are fast, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Edward Clemans enjoys the flexibility the bikes offer.

“I like the idea of freedom,” said Clemans, a Del Rio, Texas, native and the all-source intelligence technician with HHT. “A bike is like a convertible but with two wheels and less car.”

In addition to feeling free, the good gas mileage and low maintenances costs can persuade Soldiers to test the gauge of motorcycle riding.

“I’ve noticed the younger Soldiers tend to ride the sport bikes,” said Cornell. “I prefer more of a cruiser style bike.”
Cornell said he often rides to unload the stress of the day.
“When I have a long day at work, I take the long way home,” said Cornell. “It’s a big stress reliever.”

Soldiers must check a series of boxes in order to be cleared to ride. The mentorship pushes them to learn how to be vigilant and safe.

“The first thing a Soldier should do is to address their command and let them know they are interested in purchasing a bike,” said Cornell. “They could attend the Basic Riders Course, where the course provides the Soldiers a bike to get familiar with riding before they buy a bike.”

By providing a beginner-level bike to Soldiers curious about riding, course participants gain riding experience and determine if it is for them.

“I have never ridden before, but if I’m going to learn, I’m going to learn the proper way,” said Clemans.

The course curriculum contains basic motorcycle knowledge, controls and maneuvers. The sponsor of the course, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, has a website where riders can learn more about safety.

The MSF encourages the riders to pretend other drivers can’t see them. This will help them take initiative to ride more defensively.

“As I’m coming to a stop, I’ll pull as far over to one side of my lane as I can, because you never know if the person behind you is paying attention,” said Staff Sgt. Renardo Prevo, a Fontana, California, native and HHT automation platoon sergeant.

Once a Soldier completes the basic course, instructors inspect each participant’s personal protective equipment. An approved helmet, gloves, reflective vest, long sleeves and pants are some examples of basic equipment each rider is required to have.

“Reflective vests are worn to provide other drivers a better chance of seeing the motorcyclists on the road,” said Cornell. “Another way to increase your visibility is to turn on your high beams.”

The inspection doesn’t stop at the protective equipment but continues on to the rider and the bike itself.

The tires, cables, oil and other parts of the motorcycle are checked to ensure the bike is properly maintained.

“We check also the administrative details, from insurance information to licenses and certificates,” said Cornell. “I keep track of all 17 current riders’ records in the troop.”

But the mentorship isn’t just about classes and getting inspected. The group of qualified riders come together to enjoy group road trips.

“Our trip is probably about 120 miles total,” said Cornell. “We ride out, get a burger, and head back.”

HHT’s motorcycle mentorship program builds an environment that encourages safety and camaraderie among riders.

10 Cars More American Than Yours

PORTLAND, Ore. (TheStreet) — If you’re looking for an “American-made” car, prepare to be extremely flexible with that definition.

The subject of American-made cars is a bit tricky to begin with, but becomes even more so when you change the rules as you go. The folks at vehicle pricing site Cars.com decided it isn’t enough to know where the car was assembled or how many U.S.-made parts went into it: “American” apparently also means popular.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration strongly disagrees. The agency admits freely there’s no such thing as a 100% American car and notes that one of its most American vehicles, the 70% U.S.-produced Ford Edge, has a base motor made in Mexico and is assembled in Canada. You can have a car with 70% American-made parts, such as the Chevrolet Captiva, which doesn’t mean much if it’s assembled elsewhere, or a car such as the BMW AG that is assembled right here in the U.S., but gets only 20% of its parts from this country.

More than 20 years ago, Congress passed the American Automobile Labeling Act requiring cars to have labels specifying their percentage of U.S./Canadian parts, the country of assembly and the country of origin for the engine and transmission. The NHTSB has compiled lists of these vehicles for each model year to help consumers who care about such things get more homegrown product for their money.

The NHTSB has its own list of vehicles assembled in the U.S. using the most U.S. and Canadian parts, but Cars.com’s insistence on popularity led it to devise a list of its own. These may not be the “most” American-made cars available, but they’re the American-made cars that the site feels American drivers are most likely to own. Keep that caveat in mind for the first entry on this list:

10. 2014 SRT Viper
Assembled: Detroit, Mich.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

This ranked No. 3 on the AALA list, but Cars.com didn’t think all that much of its U.S. sales.

But this is one of the few vehicles that can actually claim it was built in in Detroit itself. This six-figure supercar comes absolutely stacked for the price, too. Its all-aluminum 8.4-liter V-10 engine produces 640 horsepower while electronic stability control, traction control, four-channel antilock brake system, carbon fiber and aluminum skin, Pirelli P Zero Z-rated tires, four-piston Brembo brakes, low seating position and 7-inch full-color customizable instrument clusters come track-ready … if it ever sees one.

Just in case it never makes it beyond the strip in South Beach, there’s a Uconnect in-vehicle connectivity system, Harman Kardon audio system, bi-xenon projector headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and LED turn signals, LED taillights and snakeskin texture lens all look and sounds sweet at cruising speed. The Viper tops out at 206 mph, but looks best at about 25.

9. 2014 Honda Crosstour
Assembled: East Liberty, Ohio
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

The AALA considers this the seventh most-American car on its list, but that pesky popularity contest gets the better of the Crosstour as well.

Honda makes its first appearance thanks to its commitment to working in Ohio and its embrace of the big family vehicle. The Crosstour is basically an Accord wagon and was actually named the Accord Crosstour until last year. Honda wants it to be considered a crossover so badly, but the Crosstour continues to pick up the wagon market competitors such as Subaru and Volvo are leaving for dead. A redesign last year gave it a more powerful engine and a rearview camera, but that combined 22 miles per gallon is gluttonous even for an American crossover.

8. 2014 Honda Ridgeline
Assembled: Lincoln, Ala.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

We’re going to go ahead an call this an odd inclusion.

Cars.com bumped the Dodge Avenger off the list because it’s being discontinued and doesn’t have a clear successor. But the Ridgeline goes out of commission after 2014 and doesn’t have a 2015 model in the works. There have been rumors of a ground-up redesign of the Ridgeline for 2016, but we’ve seen nothing concrete and only vague photographic evidence.

Meanwhile, the Ridgeline has always been a compromise for drivers who couldn’t decide between a pickup and an SUV. Its 1,500 pounds of payload capacity is great for tailgating, but about half that of the Ford F-150 and other, more popular pickups. Honda may fix that by 2016, but in the meantime this is an American made truck with few of the features American truck owners want.

7. 2014 Chevrolet Corvette
Assembled: Bowling Green, Ky.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

Wow, knocking the Corvette down from No. 5 to No. 7 because it’s a costly sports car with an exclusive buyer base? That’s a gutsy call for the most iconic version of the ‘Vette produced in a generation.

Chevrolet hasn’t produced a Stingray version of this vehicle since 1986, but this version has the most U.S. parts and labor put into a Corvette in roughly that same span. The pace car of last year’s Indianapolis 500, the Corvette delivers on its looks with a 6.2-liter small block V8 engine that cranks out 455 horsepower. Unless you’re the one clown who strips this beauty down to its absolute base, chances are you’re also enjoying a package that includes a Bose 10-speaker surround-sound audio system; Sirius XM satellite radio with one-year subscription and HD radio receiver; color head-up display; memory package; navigation system; heated and ventilated seats with power lumbar and bolster adjustment; and a leather-wrapped dash. It’s the lavish all-American sports car with the parts and labor to back it up.

6. 2014 Toyota Avalon
Assembled: Georgetown, Ky.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

The not-quite-luxury car is a dying breed, but Toyota breathed new life into its Avalon by listening to a very specific clientele.

With its streamlined Lexus ES frame and a combined 35 miles per gallon, it has the look of an efficient Japanese luxury car. The Avalon is an American-built vehicle built specifically for American car buyers, though, and all its extra room and added luxury features give it a slight edge over the ES — which is produced mainly in Japan.

5. 2014 Toyota Tundra
Assembled: San Antonio, Texas
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

This Toyota should have been the first pickup on the list, but at least you’ll be able to buy one next year.

As the first full-sized pickup truck built by a Japanese manufacturer, the Tundra had a lot of baggage heaped into its cargo bed that the smaller, popular Tacoma never did. But the San Antonio-based plant that makes the Tundra gave it a Texas-sized upgrade last year that included a larger grille, brawnier fenders, a redesigned tailgate and taillights, as well as a completely redesigned interior. The Toyota practicality comes through inside, however, as a 3.5-inch information screen, Bluetooth connectivity and back-up camera are now among the features that take second billing to its towing and payload capacity.

4. 2014 Toyota Sienna
Assembled: Princeton, Ind.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

Hey, families like minivans, and lots of families are buying the next two on our list, hence the Sienna’s bump from No. 10 to No. 4.

Japanese automakers have not only embraced the all-American family minivan, but are the only companies making them in the United States. Chrysler may have dominated the minivan market in the ’90s, but today they only assemble their Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country in Canada. The Toyota Sienna gives families the room they need with the V6 power they want when family road trips need to end a bit more quickly. Still, the Sienna somehow still can’t manage to accelerate past the next vehicle on our list.

3. 2014 Honda Odyssey
Assembled: Lincoln, Ala.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

It can carry five family members, store drinks and snacks in a center-console cool box and collapse its third row to offer 93.1 cubic feet for more storage. Oh, and there’s the optional 16.2-inch split-screen entertainment system that lets passengers watch two programs at once and has an optional built-in vacuum cleaner to pick up and crumbs and road snacks left behind.

It’s just your average American road trip vehicle built by a company based in Tokyo, but its increased number of U.S.-made parts is only making it more American by the year.

2. 2014 Toyota Camry
Assembled: Georgetown, Ky.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

The Camry gets a much-deserved bump based solely on the fact that no car in the U.S. is more popular on the lots.

Georgetown has been cranking out Toyotas since 1988 and uses the same platform to produce the Camry and its slightly more spacious and swank Avalon sibling. The Camry has put some serious mileage between itself and its troubled, recall-plagued past and remains the most popular car in the U.S. Its sales are nearly identical to the Chevy Silverado and exceed those of the Dodge Ram.

For yet another year, it’s going to be the best-selling non-pickup vehicle in the U.S. Is it the combined 30 miles per gallon? The pindrop-quiet interior? The Bluetooth connection or the Entune App Suite entertainment and information center? Or is it just the fact that it’s reliable enough to buy and forget about? Camry owners take a whole lot of trips in their vehicles, but few of them are to the repair shop.

1. 2014 Ford F-150
Assembled: Dearborn, Mich., and Kansas City, Mo.
Percentage made In U.S.: 75%

The fact that it’s been the best-selling truck and best-selling vehicle, period, for decades vaults the F-150 to No. 1 with ease.

The truck that’s been carrying Ma and apple pie to the baseball game since 1948 is an American icon, but has the same amount of American parts and production as the Tundra. Still, Ford consistently culls three-quarters of the F-150′s material from the U.S. and assembles it here. The same can’t always be said for the 66% American-made Ram and the paltry 40% U.S.-built Chevy Silverado and Ram, which are sometimes assembled in Mexico.

Becky Hammon Versus the Bigots

You’d think that the selection of Becky Hammon to be the first female on the full-time coaching staff of a men’s professional basketball team would not only be cause for celebration, but a sign that things are starting to change in an arena long dominated by men. You’d think it would make people say, “Well, this is long overdue. Why has an entire class of people been shut out of a job opportunity for so long? Why is gender even an issue?”

Then again, you may also think that electing the first mixed-race president of the United States – twice, yet – would make people realize that race shouldn’t have anything to do with the qualifications needed to run the country. And that’s hardly been the case. While there are indeed those who are unhappy with President Barack Obama’s approach to domestic and foreign affairs, there is an alarming degree of pure racism his very presence in the Oval Office has exposed. Worse, his election seems to have provoked latent racism among people who had little problem keeping their bigotry to themselves until they felt threatened by the elevation of a half African-American man to the nation’s highest office.

And so it is for Hammon, who has been named an assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs. She’s a stellar player, with what experts call a high “Basketball IQ,” and if she were a man, her appointment would have been wholly uncontroversial. Instead, the talented Hammon is upsetting the closed world of those who can’t stand the idea of women playing – literally or figuratively – in a man’s world.

As Slate reports, there is still a great deal of sexism and hostility toward female coaches, even among coaches themselves. According to a report by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, the representation of female coaches in college sports is getting worse, not better, with more than 60 percent of women’s Division I teams being coached by men. A few women have served as assistant coaches for men’s college sports teams, but none has served as head coach. And as Slate notes, CBS sports reporters did a survey of college coaches, eliciting alarming, and anonymous, responses. Said one coach, “A big part of being a college coach is molding boys into successful men. Obviously a woman can’t do that. I just don’t see a place for it.”

Set aside for a minute the fact that so many men are coaching women’s college teams. (Are they qualified to turn these young women into successful, more mature women and athletes?) If only men can turn boys into men, then these male coaches need to be presented with another question: If they have sons, did they stay home all day with them, or even take primary care-giving responsibility? Or did they rely on their wives to mold the boys into successful men? What’s the variable here – that parents don’t get paid for raising sons (or daughters), but college coaches can make many times the salary of the president of the United States by leading a sports team?

Hammon got another piece of hate-mail from a letter writer to the Washington Post. The reader complained that Hammon’s appointment was being celebrated despite the fact that Hammon had “[given] up her U.S. citizenship and became a naturalized citizen of Russia just so she could participate in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Do the fans of the NBA and the San Antonio Spurs really want to cheer for a person who renounced her American heritage?” the letter writer asked.

The offended fan was wrong – Hammon got dual citizenship to participate in the Olympics. She did not give up her U.S. citizenship. And why should Hammon get slammed for this? Think of how many NHL players skate for their native nations of Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland and other hockey-happy countries. And there are other U.S. citizens – male and female – who do some fancy paperwork to play on other nations’ Olympic teams. Members of the WNBA also go play abroad in the U.S. off-season – something male professional basketball players don’t have to do, since thy get paid dramatically more than female professional basketball players. The athletes are merely looking for a way to compete, and if they can’t do it for the U.S. or in the U.S., why not play overseas? It’s not much different than U.S. companies locating their headquarters overseas to avoid paying U.S. taxes. In fact, the athletes are far more honest about it, since they actually work overseas (unlike the CEOs of companies practicing corporate inversions), and are not going there just to exploit the lower-paid foreign workers or avoid taxes.

The message to Hammon seems to be this: It doesn’t matter how well you play or know basketball. You’re female, so stay in your second-class, lower-paid court and leave the better-compensated, more glamorous jobs to us. This was the message Obama got during his campaign, and it’s escalated during his presidency. Hats off to Hammon for getting this job. And special kudos to her, in advance, for the brutal backlash that is already starting to mount. It will be unpleasant, but she will make it that much easier for the next female coach of a professional men’s team.

Jurrens inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame

DEADWOOD | Jesse Jurrens, owner of Legend Suspension, was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Aug. 6 during the 14th Annual Induction Breakfast.

Jurrens moved his company to Sturgis in 2008 when the U.S. economy was failing and he took dramatic steps to survive and thrive in the future.

“I would not operate anywhere else in the world because somehow we have been able to connect the dots with some of the best people right here in the Black Hills,” Jurrens said.

Jurrens employs 21 people and Legend Suspension has exploded and now includes a full line of innovative coil suspension for motorcycles as well as UTV’s. His company enjoys a great local, national and global reputation. Jurrens was recognized by Hot Bike with its most innovative product of 1998.

Jurrens was born in Watertown, and was honored that his mother was able to attend the ceremony during rally week.

“A very important person in my life is my mother; she had us on motorcycles long before we should have been,” he said.

Jurrens said she even traded a horse for a motorcycle to get the kids on a bike early on.

Jurrens has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Black Hills Children’s hospital and has a special therapy room named after his father.

Jurrens concluded his acceptance speech saying: “Sturgis is a great place to do business.”

Fuel cell cars aren't greener than their conventional counterparts

A decade ago cars powered by fuel cells seemed like the future of green automotive travel, but many analysts now think otherwise.

These futuristic cars run on hydrogen fuel and emit only heat and water vapor. Their engines mix hydrogen, stored on-board in fuel tanks much like gas tanks, with oxygen in the air to produce electricity that powers the drive train. Environmentalists love the idea of fuel cell cars given their lack of greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on a renewable fuel that can be produced domestically.

Despite these benefits, fuel cell cars have not caught on and skeptics wonder if they ever will. One big hurdle is that creating hydrogen fuel turns out to be highly inefficient compared to other readily available fuels. According to Richard Gilbert, co-author of Transport Revolutions: Moving People and Freight Without Oil, the creation of hydrogen gas uses about half the energy it creates. Half of this resulting energy then goes to the conversion of hydrogen back into electricity within fuel cells. The result is that “only a quarter of the initially available energy reaches the electric motor.” In fact, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles’ efficiency varies between 18 and 20 percent, while battery electric vehicles have 77-80 percent efficiency.

Not only are fuel cells less efficient than internal combustion engines, their implementation on a wide scale would create enormous infrastructure costs. New infrastructure would be required from “wells to wheels.” Also, fuel cell motors wear out five times faster than internal combustion engines, thereby resulting in a shorter car life and more maintenance. Hydrogen’s small size and extreme reactivity results in brittle metal and engines prone to leaking, which reduces both environmental and practical benefits.

But many still consider fuel cell cars a viable option. “Hydrogen is the key to sustainable transportation because it can be produced in virtually unlimited quantities from renewable resources and because its use is nearly pollution-free,” says the non-profit INFORM. A significant financial commitment to hydrogen research, says the group, could result in a variety of vehicles fueled by hydrogen that perform as well or better than gasoline vehicles, with a fraction of the environmental impact.

INFORM adds that transitioning to hydrogen could be achieved without new federal dollars if we reallocate funds within the national energy program from nuclear and fossil fuels. “The opportunities for innovation and economic growth in hydrogen energy are largely untapped, and many nations are working to establish an early position in this fledgling field.” According to INFORM, Germany and Japan are far ahead of the U.S. in hydrogen development. The group would like to see U.S. policymakers encourage more development of fuel cells so we have options open in a fast-transitioning energy future.

Meanwhile, sales of battery electric and hybrid vehicles continue to soar—rising 228 percent in 2013 alone. There are currently no new fuel cell vehicles for sale at American auto dealers, although Honda has hinted that it could have its FCX fuel cell engine ready for the mass market by 2018.

CHP splits with motorcycle lane guidelines

It’s rush hour on Highway 101, and up ahead traffic is slowing. Car after car shifts from a zoom to a cruise to a roll. For a car or truck driver, there is no way to avoid the jam, other than taking side roads through town.

But for a motorcyclist riding on the highway through Marin County, the gridlock is not quite so ominous. Thanks to a state law that allows lane-splitting — California is the only state that allows it — motorcyclists can weave through the traffic, driving in whatever available width there is, and pass by the velocity-challenged drivers sitting in automobiles.

Nothing has changed — or is expected to change — with the law that has for decades provided motorcyclists a perk. But a recent squabble over the California Highway Patrol’s lane-splitting safety guidelines has raised questions over what is safe lane-splitting and whether there should be some sort of standard.

“I’m a little confused,” said John Harper, owner of MotoHaven, a Harley Davidson rental and repair shop in Novato. “The guidelines are good. Or were. Why was it a big deal to have them, then pull them?”

Guidelines removed

The Highway Patrol posted the guidelines on its website in March 2013. But in July of this year, the guidelines were removed at the suggestion of the state Office of Administrative Law, which is charged with making sure regulations are clear and available to the public. It also oversees publication and distribution of regulations.

“Some people had interpreted them as rules, laws, regulations that could be enforced,” said Highway Patrol spokeswoman Jaime Coffee. “They were not intended for that purpose. They were prepared as common-sense safety tips.”

The Department of Motor Vehicles and the Office of Transportation Safety, which had followed the Highway Patrol’s lead by posting the guidelines, also removed them in response to the administrative law office’s suggestion.

Administrative law Director Debra Cornez said the removal was prompted by a citizen petition challenging the guidelines as “an underground regulation.”

Motorcyclists said the guidelines aligned with what they generally practice anyway: don’t go more than 10 mph faster than the flow of traffic, don’t lane-split if traffic is moving faster than 30 mph, and try to limit the practice to the two left lanes.

Dave Pearson, a motorcyclist and sales associate at the motorcycle-centric Marin Speedshop in San Rafael, said he had not been aware of the guidelines’ specifics. But when he listed off his “personal guidelines,” they aligned with the Highway Patrol’s now-expunged suggestions.

“There are people who are excessive,” Pearson said. “But it’s usually kids or crazy people.”

It’s those motorcyclists who don’t adhere to what Pearson called “unwritten rules” that give motorcyclists and lane-splitting a bad reputation, he said.

Benefits claimed

Mill Valley motorist Roxanne Partridge said she is fine with lane-splitting. But she is wary of the occasional motorcyclist who zigzags through traffic precariously.

“It’s kind of silly when they’re not being careful,” Partridge said. “Or if they’re on a more quiet bike, then it can be difficult to know they’re coming.”

Guidelines or no guidelines, motorcyclists say lane-splitting benefits all drivers on the road — and they hope it remains legal.

“It’s a privilege, a cool thing to have,” Pearson said.

The obvious advantage for motorcyclists is that they are able to get to their destinations sooner, as they move faster than their four-wheeled counterparts. And by moving along in this fashion, that helps reduce congestion, motorcyclists say.

Pearson said he sees about a dozen motorcyclists on the freeway during his commute to San Rafael from San Leandro. If those motorcycles weren’t lane-splitting, that would mean 12 more vehicles clogging the road during a traffic jam on Interstate 880 — a freeway notorious for long commutes.

Then there is the mechanical benefit of lane-splitting. Most motorcycle engines are air-cooled, so they rely on convection created by wind passing over the engine as the motorcycle is in motion. If a motorcycle sits idly or is not moving fast enough to get a significant airflow over the engine, it could overheat.

Harper said if he were riding his hog in a hot place, such as Texas in the summer, he would be inclined to pull over and have an iced tea, rather than continue sitting in traffic.

“On a 90-, 100-degree day, and you’re in bumper to bumper, things start running poorly,” Harper said.

Engine cooling was an early reason for allowing lane-splitting. But when state legislators considered outlawing it in the early 2000s, Highway Patrol officials lobbied against the new law, using accident fatality rates to show that lane-splitting helps save lives. They argued that a stationary or slow-moving motorcycle is more vulnerable to rear-ending by absent-minded drivers who fail to brake for traffic.

Considering what is at stake for motorcyclists — any accident on the road poses a grave threat — road safety tends to be a priority, and it is what, with most riders, governs them to split lanes with caution — guidelines or no guidelines.

“At the end of the day, motorcyclists have more to lose,” Pearson said. “What’s the worst that can happen to a car? A side mirror gets knocked off, a scratch. A motorcycle can go under a car.”
