Investigation ongoing after Port Ludlow woman dies following motorcycle-car crash near Chimacum

CHIMACUM — Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the circumstances of a car-motorcycle collision that killed a Port Ludlow woman.

M. Elizabeth Miller, 77, died at Jefferson County International Airport in Port Townsend on Friday while paramedics prepared her to be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Keppie Keplinger, East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokeswoman.

Her left leg had been torn off in a collision with a car driven by Aretta McClure on Center Road near Chimacum a little before 11 a.m.

McClure, 85, of Quilcene was extricated from her Volkswagen station wagon and taken to Jefferson Healthcare hospital, where she was treated and discharged.

Detective Ryan Menday of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Friday the investigation would take several weeks. He did not know if charges would be recommended.

Miller and her husband, Miles Miller, were riding motorcycles on Larson Lake Road when they turned onto Center Road, crossing the northbound lane to head south, according to Keplinger.

McClure was headed north on Center Road in the station wagon.

Miles Miller, who was in the lead, managed to pass the car and avoid injury, but his wife’s motorcycle and the car collided, Keplinger said.

Her motorcycle was pushed into a ditch on the northbound side of the road, where it caught fire and was extinguished by East Jefferson Fire-Rescue firefighters.

McClure’s car came to rest down a hill on the opposite side of the road. She was extricated from her vehicle before she was taken to the hospital.

Center Road was closed from state Highway 19 to Eaglemount Road for several hours while deputies conducted an investigation.

Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue and Quilcene Fire Rescue also responded to the scene.

The body was taken to Kosec Funeral Home, Menday said.

Behind the pricetag on these $800 sweatpants

A decade ago it would’ve been unimaginable for a pair of sweatpants to be as expensive as an iPod, let alone rival a MacBook. Sure, premium denim brands such as APC were convincing people to lay down serious cash for jeans. But sweatpants were meant for a jog, or perhaps a lazy Sunday.

In the late 2000s, premium sweatpants began creeping into designer collections, and buying guides began touting the virtues of $400 sweats with high-end materials and fabrications. Now, the high end in designer sweatpants routinely runs upwards of $800, and a trip to just about any multibrand luxury retailer will reveal racks and racks of upmarket sweats with eye-popping price tags.

“It barely existed literally three years ago,” says Marshal Cohen, chief fashion industry analyst at research firm NPD Group. “Now everybody and their mom is in the active bottom business.”

The high-end market has yet to peak, Cohen says. Premium sweats are too cool, and more importantly too comfortable, for the frenzy to end anytime soon. While both women and men are giving in to this softer, stretchier side of dressing, it’s really on the men’s side that the pricey, premium bottoms are flourishing.

In fact, the $800 sweatpant offers a useful prism through which to understand men’s fashion right now. It reflects the changing male attitude toward clothing, the cultural factors shaping the way guys dress, and the shifts in the retail landscape affecting designer pricing. Here’s everything you need to know.

christopher raeburn, spring 2015, london fashion week, fashion, style, lifestyle, athleisure, sweatpantsChristopher Raeburn’s fancy pants for spring-summer 2015.(Jonathan Short/Invision/AP)

Is this really happening?

Yeah, it is. Online retailers selling designer clothing, such as Mr. Porter and Ssense, now have entire sections devoted entirely to sweatpants. Mr. Porter, which leans toward the high end but also carries mass-market brands such as J. Crew and Club Monaco, currently has 43 pairs of sweatpants for sale. Ten of those are $820 or more.

Where did it come from?

The apparel trend known as “athleisure” has brought activewear and “soft dressing” out of the gym and into the office and beyond.

On top of that, fashion brands have increasingly been pulling influence from streetwear, which mixes elements from California’s surf-and-skate scene, hip-hop, and urban culture. Sweatpants are a key feature.

The result is designers of all sorts, from Christopher Raeburn to Givenchy, experimenting with sweats.

None of this would matter if there weren’t a market for men’s $800 sweatpants, but there is. Guys are increasingly into fashion and willing to spend big money on it. Retailers are paying attention.

fashion, style, lifestyle, menswear, sweatpants, athleisure, luxuryFrom left: Haider Ackermann, $860; Balmain, $820; Lanvin, $865.(Courtesy of Mr. Porter)

What are $800 sweatpants like?

They’re not terribly different from mass-market sweatpants—just nicer, and often with more details. The Haider Ackermann sweats on the left have a dropped crotch and a sharp taper as they move toward the ankle, creating a distinct silhouette. The Balmain pair in the middle take inspiration from motorcycle pants with the ribbed knee details and seams. The pair by Lanvin on the right are made of a textured, bonded cotton-and-polyamide blend, and have zippered hip pockets. Others have bold graphic elements (another streetwear reference), or cargo pockets. You’ll notice, though, that they still have the hallmarks of sweatpants: a soft, unstructured appearance, an elastic waistband, and a stretchy knit fabric.

While these are all cotton or cotton blends, pretty much any knit material can be used. You’ll see everything from merino wool and viscose to silk-cotton French terry. The really expensive ones, such as this $1,740 cashmere pair from Berluti, use more luxe fabrics.

I get why cashmere sweats cost so much, but how can cotton ones be so expensive?

A number of variables go into how fashion brands and retailers set prices. But here are the key factors:

First, the materials and fabrication are much more expensive than they are for mass-market sweatpants. Nicer fabrics (even cottons) cost more, and because high-end brands make relatively small quantities, producing just hundreds or fewer of an item, economies of scale work against them.

Prices of designer items have also been rising for years now. For the sake of argument, let’s say materials cost $50 and sewing costs $50, so the total cost is $100 to make the garment (similar to the prices in the process described in a New York Times piece on khakis). For a high-end designer item, those prices are not unusual.

lanvin, sweatpants, style, fashion, lifestyle, menswear, spring 2014, paris fashion weekLanvin’s sweats use luxe fabrics like viscose silk.(Patrick Kovarik/AFP/Getty Images)

Next, you have to account for the traditional markup structure. Common practice is for the designer to mark an item at 2 to 2.5 times its manufacturing cost. That’s the wholesale price she sells it at. Those $100 sweats now cost up to $250.

The retailer then buys it at wholesale and marks it up again—another 2 to 2.5 times to the retail price. That brings the price all the way up to $625.

That still leaves quite a gap to get to $800 or above, which brings us to the remaining factor: perception.

If the brand does any marketing, you’re chipping in your share of that. Then there’s the allure of exclusivity: According to the Veblen goods theory, as an item’s cost goes up, so does its value as a status symbol. Brands commonly raise prices as a strategy to actually attract customers.

“If you want the product to look and feel expensive, you’ve got to make it expensive,” says Cohen. “It’s not the content. It’s the packaging and the messaging.”

Going back to our hypothetical sweatpants, the designer might increase the price to $350 wholesale. With the normal retail markup, that price tag will now be $875.

Victor Cruz isn’t ashamed to leave the house in sweats.(AP Photo/ Thibault Camus)

Who wears sweatpants in public, expensive or otherwise?

Kanye West wears them. Jude Law wears them. A$AP Rocky wears them. Cool basketball players wear them. Eugene Tong of the monochrome dreamcoat wears them. Normal guys wear them.

In short, lots and lots of people wear them, and find creative ways of doing so. Football player Victor Cruz, for instance, has been known to throw on a blazer over sweats, adding a bit of structure to balance out the soft bottoms.

OK, OK. But why would I wear sweatpants out of the house?

Because you can. Attitudes toward dress have been growing ever more relaxed since blue jeans came to prominence in the years following World War II. Wearing sweatpants in public—as actual clothing and not just for lounging or playing sports—is the most recent extension of this decades-long trend toward dressing down. In fact, some argue that sweatpants are taking the place of jeans, and they’re certainly eating into denim’s market.

“Because of the ability now to wear them as everyday attire, they’ve replaced the high-end jean market,” says Cohen. “That same customer has migrated over to the active bottom.”

And don’t be shy about wearing them to work: Some research shows that, done right, dressing down can actually make you seem wealthier and more authoritative.

Whether or not this an acceptable turn of events is another matter. Some people are adamant that men should not be wearing stretchy pants in place of their denim.

If you’re already in yours though, you’re probably too comfortable to care.

Lordstown, we have a problem

Time to eat a bit of crow.

About six months ago, I waxed poetic about the first new Chevy I’ve ever owned in more than a half-century of life. Red Cruze impressed me with being solid, quiet, quick enough, a good handler and some cool tech features, but not so much that I’d need to try to pass that engineering program at the University of Cincinnati that beat me three decades ago.

Then, winter set in. Red’s shiny paint was covered in the layer of salty grime. Would he be just another car or earn his stripes as one of my favorites?

Under the grime, he never put a wheel wrong. He heated up on sub-zero mornings within a few minutes, keeping me warm. He tracked true through ice, wind, snow and idiots with pickup trucks passing in the dark on icy Route 7. My driving mojo, missing since I spun Enrico the Cruiser in the snow a couple years ago, had returned.

In short, I was ready to heap buckets of praise on this little red car with the grumbling, rumbling little turbocharged motor and the zippy six-speed automatic transmission.

But, and here’s my out on this crow thing, I was reserving praise because it is still, unfortunately, a GM product, and GM still has a lot of stripes to earn. So when I’ve written about thiis little car, I’ve always said, “So long as he truly holds up over the long run,”or words to that effect.

The long run, apparently, doesn’t include prolonged subzero weather.

The annoying buzz started with the first really, really cold day.

Somewhere around 2000 rpm, the growl became a herd of nasty hornets, the sound of some high-school kid’s fat open exhaust-piped ’99 Honda Civic. You know. Flatulent exhaust sound. Not performance. Nails on a chalkboard annoying to my gearhead ear.

I waited. Maybe, I thought, it would get better when it warms up outside. No. Not even the rare 50-degree day abated the flatulent-exhaust sound entirely. Right at the speed the engine turns on the highway. Right at the shift points around town, the shift points that I used to love listening to so much that I never cranked the stereo in this car yet.

Turns out, thanks to great mechanics at my dealer, folks who actually cared about the customer’s complaint, even if the car wasn’t making the sound very loudly by the time I got to the dealer, that Red Cruze has a quality problem. A big one.

His engine mounts, the heart of the reason Chevy is able to build such a smooth-feeling little sedan, are rattly loose. Right from the factory. Maybe the UAW doesn’t let the folks at the Lordstown factory outside Youngstown use torque wrenches or something.

The dealer tightened the mounts and Red sounds like an old Indy Car again, little bit of turbo sound, some rumbling, burbling and growl. Bliss. For now.

They ordered new engine mounts for him, and they’ll be installed soon. Because Red’s mounts will work loose again, thanks to their apparently goofy installation in the first place.

Now, the noise I have to hear is from the anti-American car crowd. The (Dr.) Boss, she who drives the iPhone appliance of cars, the personality-less but perfect nonetheless Honda Civic, said, “Hmm. Mr. Sulu never had this problem.”

Grrrr. Enrico the Cruiser did, as I recall, giving a big thwack! every time we stopped him about two or three months after my dad bought him back in 2004. I think the USS Moby Grape, the Dodge Intrepid, did the same thing in the 1990s. Loved that car, too. Still have Enrico, though he may not be starting now, having been frozen in the garage for a month (that’s a tale for another day).

So, I have confidence that the mechanic who took the time to listen and find the issue, even to study technical service bulletins to find out if the buzz was another issue with Red (it wasn’t), will repair the Chevy and get him back to good as new for good. Or until the next American car problem causes me to eat more crow.

I sure hope that won’t be the case.

Forte says he would be helpless 'Last Man'

What would MacGruber do if he were The Last Man on Earth?

“He would die almost immediately,” says Will Forte, who has played the self-exploding parody of ultimate handyman MacGyver, and stars in Last Man, the new Fox comedy airing Sunday (9:30 p.m. ET/PT).

The former Saturday Night Live star doesn’t think he would fare much better in Last Man‘s world as the (almost) lone survivor of a humanity-killing virus.

“I wouldn’t know how to do anything. I don’t know how plumbing works, how you get electricity going,” he says.

His Phil Miller — combining the names of fellow executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 22 Jump Street) — doesn’t seem to know much, either. When Phil isn’t trashing the McMansion he occupies in Tucson, he withstands the onslaught of a tennis-ball machine by wearing a suit of armor, uses aquarium tanks as pin set-ups for parking-lot bowling and blows up one car by rolling another one into it.

In an upcoming episode, “I get to shoot a flamethrower at a bunch of different things,” Forte says. “There are a lot of wish-fulfillment elements to the show.”

Part of Phil’s challenge is “figuring out how you do everything that you just take for granted. What’s the bathroom situation? We found a fun fix.”

That would be the toilet pool, a place where Phil relieves himself after indoor plumbing fails. Nearby is the margarita pool, where he submerges himself in tequila.

And now, lonely Phil must contemplate the post-apocalyptic dating pool, populated by Carol (Kristen Schaal), a woman he meets just as he is about to end it all.

“The only thing he wants is for human interaction. If that could be a woman, it would be awesome,” Forte says, describing Phil’s pre-Carol days. “Be careful what you wish for.”

If Phil has his own hallucinatory vision of the perfect woman, “Phil is not Carol’s ideal man at all,” says Schaal, who voices Louise on another Sunday Fox show, the animated comedy Bob’s Burgers.

Compared with Phil’s slovenly resignation, Carol is “so strong. She’s survived in the same situation as Phil, but she’s better in a lot of ways. She’s healthier. She can see the goodness in Phil before he can see it. … I think America’s going to fall in love with Carol,” Schaal says, laughing.

Carol also is extremely regimented, asking Phil to obey stop signs and avoid parking in a handicapped spot, despite the absence of other drivers.

Although Phil and Carol seem to engage in mutual annoyance, “There is a sweetness they identify in each other,” Schaal says, acknowledging Phil’s effort to clean up his act a bit after her arrival. “There’s an interesting power play going on. When you’re the last two people on earth and you’re starting over completely fresh, who’s going to be calling the shots?”

Their end-of-the-world blind date carries heavy ramifications, including the responsibility to repopulate the world. “That’s a lot of pressure to put on somebody.” Forte says.

Last Man performed surprisingly well in its two-episode premiere, topping all of Sunday’s broadcast shows among young adults and averaging 5.8 million viewers despite the producers’ reluctance to discuss details, including whether Phil was the only character.

Other actors will join Last Man, including Mad Men‘s January Jones, Mary Steenburgen, Cleopatra Coleman and Mel Rodriguez, although Forte doesn’t want to describe their characters or future episodes. He thinks that might spoil the show.

“I remember my dad told me what Rosebud was before I watched Citizen Kane, not that I’m equating this show to Citizen Kane. I still really liked Citizen Kane, but I always wonder how much more I would have liked it if I had found out on my own … instead of my dad being a jerk,” he says. “Thank God I didn’t see The Sixth Sense with him.”

The Headhunters Motorcycle Club
The Headhunters Motorcycle Club’s annual Outlaw Run is expected to gather about 150 motorcycles, custom cars and hot rods for the event in the town tomorrow. Photo / NZME.

A local government representative for Wellsford has acknowledged the Headhunters gang is integrated in the community but says they are nothing to be afraid of.

Earlier this week a senior Wellsford police officer told the Northern Advocate businesses sponsoring the gang’s annual fundraiser this weekend were supporting organised crime.

But James Colville, Wellsford board member of the Rodney Local Board of the Auckland Council, said the Headhunters was integrated in the Wellsford community.

“Put it this way they don’t cause any trouble,” Mr Colville said. “Most of them would probably be on the pension.”

The Headhunters Motorcycle Club’s annual Outlaw Run is expected to gather about 150 motorcycles, custom cars and hot rods for the event in the town tomorrow.

A poster advertising the event, designed in the style of a wanted poster, listed 44 groups or businesses as sponsors, with about half of these coming from Wellsford.

It was no surprise so many businesses had sponsored the event because they were part of Wellsford, Mr Colville said.

“I haven’t had any need to associate with them (recently) but when I did they’re always pleasant,” he said. The safest place in Wellsford was likely at the gang’s headquarters, Mr Colville said.

While Wellsford Sergeant Geoff Medland acknowledged some may see the gang through different eyes, the underlying fact was that all motorcycle gangs were part of organised crime, he said.

An organiser of the run, who declined to be named, said it would be family-friendly with the proceeds going towards a local family in need. Depending on weather the run, now in its seventh year, was expected to make its way from Wellsford to the Kai Iwi Lakes, north of Dargaville. Last year there was a police escort for at least part of the run and the same was expected this year.

Clive Jones, owner of Outdoor and Marine Wellsford, said he had no reservations supporting the run because the group did not cause any trouble.

Men's Spring/Summer 2015 Fashion Trend: Statement Stripes

Time To Change Your Stripes?

As one of the easiest patterns to pull off there is, it’s hardly surprising that stripes continue to cement their place within the modern gent’s wardrobe year after year.

Yet while the traditional Breton T-shirt is a perennial spring/summer classic that will never fall out of fashion, this season sees both luxury designers and high street giants putting all new slants on stripes. From vivid block-stripe knits to wide-striped tailoring, this timeless motif has been re-imagined for the coming months.

But will these bolder takes increase the pattern’s popularity? Or will a preference for more subtle variants prevail?

On The SS15 Runways

It was Gucci that set the trend in motion, with a heavily nautical collection that paid homage to all ranks of men at sea – from naval officers to swashbuckling pirates.

A striking navy and white vertical stripe dominated – worked across lean blazers, trousers and a roomy band collar shirt – but the pattern made plenty of subtler appearances as well, either in the form of detailing on the sleeves of summer-ready topcoats and blazers or accessories such as neck scarves and the straps of wraparound bags.

However, the collection’s standout piece was undoubtedly an all-over striped suit that managed to steer clear of Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice territory, and come off as solid option for smart-casual occasions:

Statement Stripes On The Gucci SS15 Menswear Runway

Dior Homme

Kris Van Assche at Dior Homme also took sartorial inspiration from seamen, offering his own distinctly contemporary take on the fisherman’s traditional yellow slicker, as well as the Breton stripe.

Utilising various combinations of navy, white, red and yellow (there was a particularly Gallic red, white and blue combination), Van Assche’s broad Breton stripe was applied to scoop neck vests, which were worn over shirts and underneath suit jackets.

Finer stripes were on show too, coming in either classic navy and white or red and grey, spaced far apart and spanning the breadth of button-down shirts:

Statement Stripes On The Dior Homme SS15 Menswear Runway

Kenzo & Paul Smith

Other designers adopted a similar approach, putting a new spin on the motif via the use of bold hues.

For example, Kenzo opted for graphic, often asymmetric stripes in peppermint, coral and aqua, while at Paul Smith, there were multi-coloured horizontal, vertical and zigzag stripes that took their colour cues from the label’s signature branding:

Statement Stripes On The Kenzo and Paul Smith SS15 Menswear Runway

E. Tautz

Keen to take traditional stripes into uncharted territory was Patrick Grant at tailoring label E. Tautz.

For his collection inspired by the great British seaside, Grant co-opted a classic navy and white deckchair stripe and applied it to everything from voluminous outerwear to lean trousers and baggy shorts. These pieces were either cut straight and vertical, or moulded to the curvature of the body – i.e. straight through the torso but slightly slanted on the arms.

But it wasn’t all about pushing boundaries. Grant also incorporated several pinstriped tailored separates that offered an alternative for those not quite ready for bold stripes and oversized fits:

Statement Stripes On The E.Tautz SS15 Menswear Runway

J.W.Anderson

Elsewhere, at J.W.Anderson, the clothing was about as far away from a conservative pinstripe as you can get.

Delivering another collection of his signature androgyny, Anderson served up head-to-toe striped looks in olive, blue and mauve, each made up of blouse-like shirts and trousers, accessorised with a generously sized neck scarf in exactly the same fabric.

By no means easy to pull off, these looks probably aren’t worth emulating directly, but it just goes to prove how integral stripes are to this season’s aesthetic:

Statement Stripes On The J.W. Anderson SS15 Menswear Runway

Stripes For The Everyday Man

Of course, a pattern as fundamental to men’s style as the stripe is hardly season-specific. But what these runway examples do suggest is that now’s the time to broaden your horizons (and your stripes, too, while you’re at it).

For example, if you usually stick to pinstripes, why not try subbing in block-stripes instead? Or if you’re usually conservative with colour, why not opt for something that makes more of a statement, such as a multi-coloured or pastel stripe?

Team them with neutral warm-weather staples and you won’t go far wrong:

Tailored Separates

Ideal for those who like to dress smart and refined on a daily basis, striped separates – whether in trousers or jacket form – are guaranteed to give your formal wear collection a summer-ready lift.

An effortless way to separate yourself from the crowd, and a ready-made alternative to popular checked tailoring, we recently highlighted the striped blazer as a key piece that all style-conscious men should consider adding to their wardrobe for SS15.

Team with a linen shirt, slim chinos and a pair of suede loafers for a sharp, Riviera-inspired look that would turn heads for all the right reasons:

Head-To-Toe Stripes

The more confident among you could try your hand at head-to-toe stripes. Of course, the easiest way to pull off this look is via a full suit with a strong stripe, but there’s no reason why you couldn’t combine mismatched stripe separates – think a diagonal stripe T-shirt with a pair of vertical striped trousers.

Be warned though, if you’re six foot or taller, all-over vertical block-stripes can quickly tip your look from chic to circus freak:

Key Pieces

Final Word

Chances are most of you reading this will already have a few striped pieces in your wardrobe, so why not take it to the next level by adding some bold motifs to the mix this season?

So long as you bear in mind your basics and anchor with pared-back, muted surrounding pieces, even the most vivid block-stripe can be kept under control.

But what do you think – will you be adding statement stripes to your spring/summer wardrobe this year? Or do you prefer your patterns to be classic and subtle?

Toyota overtakes Ford as No. 2 in U.S. sales, though hybrid sales are down

Despite harsh winter weather in the latter part of February and slowing sales of hybrids, Toyota Motor Corp. posted double-digit sales growth and surpassed Ford Motor Co. to second place in the United States, according to data from Autodata Corp.

It is the first time since last August that Toyota has come in second in monthly sales.

Opting for less-fuel-efficient sport utility vehicles and pickups amid lower gas prices, consumers are turning away from hybrids. Toyota reported a 6.6 percent slide in sales of its Prius lineup. Honda Motor Co. said its hybrids sales plummeted 22.3 percent in the month.

And although the snow and ice in the northeast may have kept some U.S. consumers from showrooms, a resurgent economy and a strengthening job market offset the negative impacts of the winter weather.

Dealers sold 1.26 million vehicles in February, 5.3 percent more than the year before, continuing a 12-month streak of year-on-year gains. The total translates to 16.23 million units in annualized sales, staying above the 16 million threshold for the ninth month in a row, the U.S. research company said.

Among Japanese automakers, Toyota posted a 13.3 percent increase, selling 180,467 vehicles. Toyota said its robust growth was driven by consumer demand for the light truck segment, such as the RAV4 SUV, which set a February record.

Meanwhile, the company said the ongoing labor disputes at West Coast seaports that caused it to reduce overtime at some North American plants had a minimum effect on sales in the month.

“There was a minor impact with some of the West Coast port situations. Although our team really worked very well around some of those challenges to minimize some supply issues,” Toyota Group Vice President Bill Fay said in a monthly sales call.

Nissan sold 118,436 vehicles, up 2.7 percent from a year ago, surpassing Honda for the second month in a row as the country’s No. 5 automaker. Its Rogue SUV, Versa subcompact and Sentra sedan hit double-digit increases while its luxury Infiniti brand sold almost 20 percent more.

Honda sold 105,466 vehicles in the month, up 5 percent from a year before. The company said the 80 percent increase in sales of both its Fit subcompact and Pilot SUV pointed to consumer demand for its broad lineup.

Although Honda previously announced it would cut production of the CR-V SUV and the Civic sedan due a drop in inventory of transmissions shipped from Japan from the West Coast port dispute, CR-V sales were up 7.4 percent while Civic sales were down just 2.5 percent.

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the maker of Subaru cars, sold 41,358 units in the month, up 18.5 percent.

Among the three major U.S. automakers, General Motors Co. posted a 4.2 percent increase in sales, selling 231,378 vehicles in the month. GM said sales of its SUVs, pickups and vans were up 36 percent as it focused on gaining market share in the light-duty, heavy-duty and midsize segments.

“Our new SUVs and crossovers, combined with the three-pickup strategy we outlined more than a year ago, are dovetailing perfectly with the growing U.S. economy and a stronger job market,” GM’s U.S. president of sales, Kurt McNeil, said in a press release.

Ford Motor Co. sold 179,673 vehicles in the month, down 2 percent from a year before, leaving it in third place. Despite the overall decrease, Ford said sales of its key F-Series truck lineup were up 7 percent and its Explorer SUV sold 32 percent more compared with the year before.

FCA US LLC, the maker of Chrysler cars, sold 160,250 units in the month, up 5.8 percent from a year ago. It said its Jeep brand and nine FCA vehicles, including the Jeep Patriot SUV and the Chrysler 200 sedan, broke a sales record for the month.

“In spite of snow and bitter cold that slowed auto sales in many regions of the country, FCA US still turned in a 6 percent sales increase and extended our year-over-year sales streak to 59 consecutive months,” Reid Bigland, Chrysler’s head of U.S. sales, said in a press release.

Custom shop where old-school is cool

IOL mot pic mar2 Retro Prestige Motorcycles 1Retro Prestige Motorcycles owner David Cade built this custom BMW R100 RS like this because this is the way he likes it.

Cape Town – One of the saddest things about the ‘bobber’ culture sweeping the motorcycle world at the moment is that it promotes – and in fact celebrates – poor standards of finish.

Make no mistake, these are not café racers; few of them run well and fewer still are capable of cornering with the absolute precision needed for racing – at night! – from one truck-stop to the next.

For the first time since Uncle Bunt and Arlen Ness took the custom-bike world by the scruff of its neck in the middle 1960s and imbued it with a sense of pride, scruffy is cool and matt black is the new black. I’ve actually had a custom bike-builder tell me his prize-winning creation was supposed to look unfinished and yes, the rust on the brackets was deliberate.

So it comes as something as a relief to discover a workshop in Cape Town that still builds old-school custom performance machines to concours standards. Owner David Cade calls it Retro Prestige Motorcycles because that sums up in three words his philosophy of life – and of motorcycling, which for him is the same thing.

OLD-SCHOOL STYLING

The bikes are kept simple, the styling old school, the engineering is elegant and the finishes superb. The majority of RPM’s projects thus far have been based on BMW twins from the 1980s because they’re plentiful, they’re reliable and they can be made to handle very nicely without prohibitively expensive componentry.

The R100 RS in the picture is actually Cade’s own bike; it wasn’t built like that to win prizes, it was built – and continues to evolve – that way because that’s the way he likes it. And along the way the shop has evolved as Cade began supplying specialised parts – some imported and some specially made to his designs – to like-minded retro-bike enthusiasts, as well as Davida retro helmets and some of the finest 1960s-style leatherwear on the market.

Then he took it one step further, with an in-house coffee bar where top barista Chris makes what riders who know are calling the best garage coffee in Cape Town, as well as fuel tank-filling sandwiches with suitably bike-themed names.

All of which, he says, is reason enough for a party – and you’re invited, this Saturday, to the first Retro Bike Day, at the workshop in Shropshire Street, Paarden Eiland from 11am until whenever, with live music, burlesque dancers, a fire eater, food and refreshments, a swop meet and prizes for the best retro, flat tracker/bobber and classic motorcycles.

Family-run motorcycle business transformed with modern management

Taipei, March 1 (CNA) As a child, Huang Po-jung (黃柏容) had never thought of going into his family’s motorcycle repair business.

Motorcycle repair craftsmen in Taiwan are nicknamed “black hands,” referring to their dirty and greasy hands stained with the lubricants of the vehicles they work with, and as a boy Huang had disliked this image.

But all this changed after a chance conversation with a university teacher when Huang was an undergraduate majoring in business administration at the Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology.

The chair of his department persuaded him to take advantage of his newly-acquired management skills to upgrade his parents’ motorcycle shop as part of an internship program in his course.

Working in his father’s shop would give him an opportunity to employ all the knowledge of marketing and managing that he had learned at school.

Enthused, Huang drew on a passion for custom motorcycles to organize for the family shop to sell custom motorcycle accessories online. He also computerized the management of the shop, allowing the family business to reduce its stock of spare parts and lower operating costs.

Huang also renovated his parents’ motorcycle repair shop. He persuaded his father to invest in interior design to make the shop more fashionable and stylish and introduced motorcycle graphics with themes from the movie “Iron Man,” in order to entice the younger generation and netizens on the Internet.

Through attractive graphic designs, Huang was able to sell some of the custom motorcycle accessories and spare parts at several times their usual price.

Now that he has graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Huang is prepared to take over his father’s shop and develop even more innovative services for his customers.
