LAHORE: In a bid to boost production, Atlas Honda Limited has announced an investment of $100 million in the expansion of its motorcycle operations in Pakistan.

A joint venture of the Atlas Group and Honda Motor Company, Atlas Honda made its intentions public on Friday in a meeting of its board of directors, which approved a three-year expansion plan.

Under the scheme, it has been proposed that installed capacity of the company’s Sheikhupura factory, near Lahore, should be doubled from the existing 0.6 million units to over 1.2 million units per annum.

In this regard, an investment of around $50 million will be made by Atlas Honda, whereas $30 million will be injected by associated companies and a further $20 million by the company’s parts suppliers.

The first motorcycle produced from the new line will arrive in the market by the beginning of October 2016. The expansion will lead to the generation of 1,800 direct jobs and 5,000 jobs at associated companies and parts manufacturers.

After the expansion, the combined assembly capacity of the company will rise to more than 1.3 million units a year.

Atlas Honda Chief Executive Officer Saquib H Shirazi said given an improved outlook of the economy, the company foresaw demand for motorcycles to rise steadily.

“With a youthful population and fast changing customer sentiments, the company is excited to expand its model line-up with consistent focus on quality, technology and localisation,” said Shirazi.

Experts hope 'Man Therapy' will help men address mental health

SALT LAKE CITY — Like the macho character in “Parks and Recreation,” a mustachioed, Ron Swanson-like man sits in a leather armchair in his wood-paneled office. A moose head is hanging on the wall, as is a small hand ax.

Dr. Rich Mahogany is a “real man.” That means that he’s not very good at identifying emotions, has a predilection for swearing loudly and sometimes listens to a tape of a car revving to relax.

But Dr. Mahogany will also admit that there are things that “real men” could use some help with — like talking about their mental health.

“Pissed off? Stressed out? Burned out?” he asks. “All of these are common feelings men experience. But if felt regularly, or ignored, these emotions can fester … like an untreated battle-ax wound.”

Welcome to “Man Therapy,” an online program that the Utah Department of Health is launching to target the stigma around mental health that persists among men.

It’s “completely different” than anything the department has done before, according to suicide prevention coordinator Andrea Hood. “It uses more humor and more of a racy, kind of a bold approach to addressing these issues.”

In 2013, Utah had the third-highest suicide rate in the nation, after only Montana and Alaska, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

And in Utah, as in the nation, the highest suicide rates are found among men — mostly middle-aged men, said Kimball Gardner, a prevention program director with the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Utah.

“Just saying, ‘Get up and deal with it’ — that’s real,” said Gardner, who helped bring Man Therapy to Utah. “That is real. And that’s real among men. We need to do things to help ourselves, but sometimes we get in places where we don’t even see that there’s others around us who care about us.”

That’s where Josh Hansen found himself after returning to Utah, haunted by his experiences in war.

Hansen is a lot like the fictional Dr. Mahogany, played by John Arp. The 44-year-old retired U.S. Army sergeant did two tours in Iraq, detecting and disabling roadside bombs. Hansen still uses military time, his language can be a little salty and he hates the term “disorder” — as in “post-traumatic stress disorder.”

“You can tell a veteran, ‘You got the post-traumatic stress disorder,’ they can’t get past that,” Hansen said. “None of my guys have a disorder. They just have post-traumatic stress. And they’re driving on.”

Driving on. That’s a phrase left over from his time in the Army — a soldier’s ethos, a way of saying, “Suck it up and drive on.”

Hansen said many veterans are steeped in the stigma that it’s unmanly to seek help.

Hansen, dogged by depression and feelings of uselessness after suffering injuries in Iraq, started drinking, getting into fights and landing in jail. He gained 45 pounds. He stopped going out because groups of people made him nervous. He lost the small business he started when he was still a teenager, a motocross racing company.

Fellow veterans were going through the same thing, but Hansen didn’t know it.

It wasn’t until he lost his fourth friend to suicide — all veterans — that he realized he needed to take action.

He got a boost from his father, a Vietnam vet who waited years to get professional help and told his son not to make the same mistake.

“Everyone looks up to their dad, right?” said Hansen. “My dad’s not weak. Anybody calls my dad weak, I’d punch them in the nose,” he joked. “So if my dad went in and got help and said it worked, hey, it’s got to be all right.”

A little over a year ago, Hansen started Continue Mission, a non-profit that reaches out to veterans and gets them active. It could be cycling or skiing or just a workout session. The trick is to get veterans out of the house and talking to each other. So far, nine veterans Hansen met through Continue Mission have gone on to seek professional help, he said.

Continue Mission is listed as a resource on the Man Therapy website. Hansen recalled showing the site to a group of veterans recently.

“They were listening to some of the stories of civilians on there talking about the depression they’ve been through, and the veterans are nodding their heads going, ‘Wow, these guys are having the same symptoms I’m having,’” Hansen said.

Man Therapy and its stern host are lampooning the impossible ideals of manliness while simultaneously drawing people in. There’s something comforting about Dr. Mahogany, who comes off like an old friend who will just as soon talk you through your feelings as he will hand you a cigar and a back slap.

On the website, users can watch video testimonials from other men who have struggled with depression and substance abuse. An “18-point head inspection” gently asks users how much they’ve been sleeping, how often they self-blame and how often they drink. Dr. Mahogany even demonstrates “subtle, yet manly” breathing exercises.

And the site links people to local therapists, with the option to filter them by specialization, like men’s issues.

Hood acknowledged that the humorous, offbeat approach to suicide prevention may raise some eyebrows.

“Because we are kind of a conservative state, that was something we took into consideration,” Hood said. According to her, officials decided to take the risk because “what we’ve normally been doing hasn’t been having the effects we want it to have.”

Last year, 555 Utahns died from suicide, she said. About a dozen go to the emergency room each day for self-inflicted injuries.

Man Therapy, developed in Colorado as a partnership between the public health department and a Denver-based ad agency, has now spread to Idaho, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

To date, more than 85,000 people have taken the “18-Point Head Inspection” and 25,000 have clicked on the national suicide crisis line phone number, Hood said.

Gardner acknowledged that just because someone clicked on a link and took a quiz doesn’t mean they’ll seek help. This program isn’t meant to solve the suicide crisis, but to give men their first entrée into thinking about mental health, he said.

“There is the notion that ‘I think I can work this out myself,’ but then there’s also a notion that ‘I don’t know where to turn, I don’t know who to talk to,"” Gardner said.

As for Hansen, there are still times when he falls back into old habits, when he doesn’t want to leave the house, when he finds himself lost in memories of war. But instead of staying home, Hansen hops in his car, gets on his bike or calls someone to talk.

And he refuses to be embarrassed about that.

“Part of me will always be there. Part of me will never leave Iraq,” Hansen said. “But I’m not going to let post-traumatic stress run my life anymore.”

Triumph presents a new generation of Bonneville sport classics

As promised a few days ago, Triumph Motorcycles lifted the curtain on its 2016 Bonneville by introducing five brand new variants. Powered by two new liquid-cooled engines in three different versions, the rejuvenated sport classic family extends from the basic Street Twin 900 roadster to the race-spec Thruxton R 1200.

We were given ample warning as the new Bonneville motorcycles have repeatedly been sighted while testing, and Triumph served us a proper preview when the new Thruxton starred in a short film with David Beckham as early as past September. Initial reports on a new 1,100 cc engine set us up for a pleasant surprise, as Triumph confuted them with two adaptations of a brand new two-cylinder in line engine that stretch up to 1,200 cc. As expected in a market that come 2016 will be governed by the new Euro 4 standards, liquid cooling has been introduced throughout the engine range in an effort to offer competitive performance levels under stricter emissions rules.

The new engine is timed to 270-degree firing intervals, coupled with a six-speed gearbox and a set of basic electronic controls that include ride-by-wire throttle, traction control and ABS, as well as a slip assist clutch for lighter and more accurate feel.

The basic model, Street Twin, is powered by a 900 cc twin, as Triumph opted to equip the other four models of this family with a 1,200 cc twin engine in two different performance levels.

Every model in the family has its own dedicated tubular steel frame, specifically tailored to each model’s philosophy. In terms of styling, Triumph didn’t veer far from the familiar design of the current Bonneville. Faithfull to the original 1959 model that started it all, this distinctive motif has played a pivotal role in the model’s success in global markets and it’s highly unlikely that Triumph would want to change that.

A lot of attention went into concealing the liquid cooling system in an effort to retain the classical air-cooled styling that has marked every Bonneville since the very first model. The slim and long radiator is discretely placed between the frame’s downtubes and painted black, while the hoses have been tucked completely out of sight. Triumph even redesigned the throttle bodies’ camouflage, masking the modern fuel system as a carburetor from the past.

Let’s view the new members of this emblematic motorcycle family in all the detail Triumph allows us – as their full technical specifications have not been released yet.

Thruxton and Thruxton R

Named after the Thruxton race series that Triumph dominated back in the day, the new edition of the café racer model is equipped with the new 1,200 cc liquid-cooled twin-cylinder engine in the more powerful Thruxton-spec guise. Dubbed as a game-changing high power unit, it produces a hefty 112 Nm (82.6 lb-ft) of torque at 4,950 rpm. Horsepower figures are not available, presumably retained for EICMA in November where we expect to get our hands on the complete technical specs of the new models.

In Thruxton-spec, the new engine features a lighter crankshaft, higher compression and a dedicated airbox compared to the same engine as used in other models of the Bonneville range. These are the elements that offer the extra power it produces.

Styled as the archetypal café racer, the Thruxton retains the basic design elements of the Bonneville family, coupling them with modern performance. Commanded through ride-by-wire throttle, it features Triumph’s variable ABS, switchable traction control and a selection of three ignition maps, relating to the Road, Rain and Sport riding modes.

Its equipment also includes LED lights front and rear, as well as a USB socket on the headstock that enables the rider to charge compatible devices on the go.

The R version is based on the same platform as the Thruxton, enriched with Showa’s superbike-spec Big Piston fork, Öhlins rear shock, Brembo monobloc calipers and Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tires. A rear seat cowl is standard on this version, but can optionally be ordered for the basic Thruxton model.

Triumph offers several inspiration kits, starting with the Track Racer kit that includes a cockpit fairing and lower clip-ons, a shorter rear mudguard, Vance & Hines slip-on exhaust and several tidbits to complete the image. The Café Racer kit includes a similar set of upgrades with a short screen instead of the fairing.

For the Thruxton R there is also a Performance Race kit, specifically designed for track use and promising lower weight and higher levels of power and torque.

Bonneville T120 and T120 Black

The T120 model is actually the most faithful replica of the original 1959 Bonneville roadster with the spoked wheels, straight saddle and peashooter mufflers.

Powered by the basic version of the 1,200 cc engine, it outputs 102 Nm (75.2 lb-ft) of torque at 3,100 rpm and enjoys the same level of electronic support as the Thruxton models.

It will be available in four color options – a Cranberry Red and Aluminium Silver combo; a Jet Black and Pure White combo (both combos with hand-painted coach lines); Jet Black; and Cinder Red.

Triumph also has on offer a Black version that differs only in colors, with everything on this version painted black except for the brown leather seat. Ironically enough, the Black version will also be available in Matt Graphite color.

The accessories’ line for the T120 Bonneville includes a Prestige inspiration kit that adds an authentic chrome tank badge, black seat , chrome Vance & Hines peashooter silencers, barrel-style grips and chrome covers for the alternator and throttle bodies.

Street Twin

This is the only model of the 2016 Bonneville lineup to make use of a new 900 cc inline two-cylinder engine with liquid cooling. Triumph calls it high torque, marking a peak value of 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) at just 3,200 rpm, 18 percent more compared to the previous model. Apart from compliance with the latest euro-norms, the new cooling system also assists towards an alleged 36 percent better fuel efficiency.

Behind the classic appearance, the Street Twin sports most of the electronic gadgetry that is incorporated on the other Bonneville models, namely the ride-by-wire throttle control, ABS, switchable traction control and USB port on the headstock – but not the riding modes.

Available in five color schemes – Cranberry Red, Aluminium Silver, Matt Black, Jet Black and Phantom Black – it will be complemented with three inspiration kits that transform the base model to a Scrambler, a Brat Tracker or an Urban roadster. These kits include different handlebars, exhausts, wind screens, panniers, seats and all the paraphernalia to appropriately suit each styling case.

Visit our gallery section for a comprehensive photo collection of all five new Bonneville models in detail and all the color schemes on offer.

A Man From Planet Earth: A Scientific Novel (Science and Fiction)

Sometime in the not-too-distant future … unbeknownst to Earth, the Galaxy is home to a number of spacefaring societies. This confederation enforces a strict protocol forbidding any contact with civilizations that have not yet achieved both a substantial spacefaring capability and sufficient maturity to control the technology explosion before triggering their own extinction.

While this policy is intended to only bring in peaceful new members, matters change entirely when the confederation is threatened by some unknown entity – is the menace real or imagined? The confederation decides to break with the rules and sends a delegate to Earth to hire one of the supposedly belligerent Earthlings to investigate and to revive the confederation’s long-unused starfleet. The Earthman agrees, but demands a high price: should he succeed, the confederation will have to accept Earth as a new member. As the threat becomes ever more acute, the question soon becomes which mission will prove harder – saving the confederation or convincing it to accept the deal!

The extensive appendix, written in non-technical language, reviews the scientific and technological topics underlying the plot – ranging from the Fermi paradox, space travel and artificial/collective intelligence to theories on possible universal convergences in technological and biological development.

Caring for Your Folding Knife

Keeping your knife clean, dry, oiled and sharp are the primary defenses against corrosion, wear, and potential injury. Be sure to clean the blade and handle after each use–however, do not soak your knife in water. A mild solution of soap and water should remove any dirt and debris that may have accumulated during use (avoid harsh detergents such as laundry or dish soap, and chlorine products). To remove any debris from inside the handle you can use a toothpick for any visible lint or dirt, or a Q-Tip for smaller amounts of dirt and debris.

After cleaning or after exposure to moisture be sure to completely dry your knife blade and handle, taking special care with any sensitive handle materials. Use a soft cotton cloth or chamois and a small amount of moisture-displacing oil (such as WD-40 or 3-in-1), on the blade only, to prevent water spots and oxidation from forming.

Fingerprints and weather are the primary causes of rusting or corrosion on a knife blade. To keep your knife looking its best, Tool Logic recommends that you give your blade a light coat of oil after each cleaning, and prior to long-term storage. Be sure to also apply a Paraffin-based oil to the pivot point, which will not only keep the action of your blade smooth but will repel dirt and debris which could impede the blade’s action.

“Our record third quarter results continue to reflect the efficacy of our long-term strategy and the resiliency of the Polaris organization, as motorcycle growth accelerated, ORV share gains continued and our developing adjacencies built momentum. We accomplished this in a difficult environment, with the combination of weakening currencies and softening economies adding to the pressure we face from the sluggish oil and agriculture markets, all in the midst of the most competitive powersports landscape we have seen in nearly a decade. It is encouraging to see our Polaris team use these challenging times to get better and stronger, while displaying renewed determination to win across all our markets,” stated Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “After our people, arguably our strongest asset is our innovative culture, which spurred the delivery of 15 new vehicles to our unsurpassed ORV armada and drove the introduction of hundreds of new PG&A items. We remain committed to being the leading innovator in our space.”

Wine continued, “Successful innovation requires agility, in order to react quickly to ever-changing market conditions. This applies not only to product design but also to our internal organization, which we demonstrated in the third quarter by realigning our international business structure to become more efficient and effective in response to challenging markets outside North America. Quick reactions demand excellent execution, and Ken Pucel and his Global Operations and Engineering teams continue to build momentum and gain traction in our efforts to improve throughput, quality and cost. Throughout the third quarter we made consistent enhancements to our Spirit Lake paint system, which helped us stabilize our operations and, by improving production output each week of September, outpace shipment goals for the first time this year. We have a clear plan to further optimize and upgrade that system over the next six months, and with the recently acquired paint facility in Spearfish, South Dakota, we will further augment paint capacity in the latter part of the fourth quarter.”

“Polaris has delivered solid financial performance in the first nine months of 2015, and despite facing stiff headwinds that show little sign of abating in the near term, our financial position remains robust and our growth opportunities plentiful.”

2015 Business Outlook
Full year 2015 sales are now expected to grow in the range of 10 to 11 percent when compared to 2014.

Off-Road Vehicle (“ORV”) sales increased three percent to $822.9 million in the third quarter of 2015 compared to the third quarter of 2014. Polaris North American ORV unit retail sales increased low-single digits percent during the 2015 third quarter compared to strong prior year third quarter retail sales growth of high-single digits percent. Consumer purchases of both side-by-side vehicles and ATVs increased at similar rates during the 2015 third quarter. The company estimates North American industry ORV retail sales in the third quarter of 2015 increased low-single digits percent year-over-year, resulting in Polaris market share gains for both ATVs and side-by-side vehicles. During the 2015 third quarter, the company introduced new ORV models in the value and premium segments including the company’s first full-sized value RANGER priced below $10,000 and the clear leader in the high-performance segment, the RZR XP Turbo, delivering more horsepower and torque than any other high-performance side-by-side on the market today. Polaris North American ORV dealer inventories during the third quarter of 2015 increased about ten percent year-over-year, in line with Company expectations, as the company began shipping the new 2016 model-year products.

Snowmobile sales increased 14 percent to $185.5 million for the third quarter of 2015 compared to $162.7 million for the third quarter of 2014. The increase is due to an increased quantity and richer mix of snowmobiles being shipped in the 2015 third quarter compared to the same period a year ago. While the snowmobile retail selling season is just beginning, Polaris’ market share performance season-to-date through the 2015 third quarter is pacing with the Company’s expectations, led by the award-winning model year 2016 PRO-RMK, the lightest mountain sled on the market. As planned, Polaris North American snowmobile dealer inventories during the third quarter of 2015 increased significantly year-over-year in preparation for the upcoming snowmobile retail selling season.

Motorcycle sales increased 154 percent to $160.4 million for the third quarter of 2015 compared to same period last year due to continued strong demand for Indian motorcycles and the new Slingshot roadster. Victory, Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot North American retail sales, combined, increased over 60 percent during the third quarter of 2015 driven by Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot, while North American industry midsize and heavyweight motorcycle retail sales were up low single digits compared to the third quarter of 2014. Indian Motorcycles retail sales were up significantly in the third quarter with ongoing strong demand for all models. Product availability for Indian motorcycles improved during the 2015 third quarter as the company continued to increase throughput at its Spirit Lake, Iowa, motorcycle factory. Victory retail sales in the third quarter of 2015 were lower than the prior year partly due to low product availability. Retail sales for the new Slingshot three-wheeled roadster continued to outpace company expectations during the third quarter. Polaris North American motorcycle dealer inventories, including Slingshot, during the 2015 third quarter increased about 30 percent compared to the same period in the prior year but remain below levels needed to meet current and backlogged retail demand.

Parts, Garments, and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales increased three percent to $226.3 million during the third quarter of 2015 as compared to the same period last year. All product lines generated sales growth during the 2015 third quarter, with the exception of snowmobiles, which was down more than 20 percent due to the timing of snowmobile related PG&A dealer shipments year-over-year. The 2015 third quarter was also impacted by lower sales outside the United States. Canadian PG&A sales were down significantly and international PG&A-related sales were up one percent compared to last year, both regions were negatively impacted by currency translations and weak economies. PG&A-related sales in the United States were up nine percent during the 2015 third quarter. The company introduced more than 500 new model-year 2016 accessories during the third quarter, which have been well received in the marketplace to date.

International sales to customers outside of North America totaled $153.6 million for the third quarter of 2015, up one percent from the same period in 2014, though held back by weak currencies (up 18 percent on a constant currency basis). EMEA reported sales declined four percent in the 2015 third quarter and Asia Pacific reported sales were down one percent while Latin American reported sales were up 50 percent. International reported sales by component in the third quarter compared to last year were as follows: Motorcycles sales were up 115 percent; ORV sales were down two percent; Global Adjacent Markets declined seven percent; snowmobile sales were down 52 percent, primarily due to Russia; and PG&A related sales increased one percent.

Gross profit increased 7 percent to $415.6 million in the third quarter of 2015, compared to $388.3 million in the third quarter of 2014. As a percentage of sales, gross profit margin declined 126 basis points to 28.5 percent of sales for the third quarter of 2015, compared to 29.8 percent of sales for the same period last year. While currency movements from a year ago, primarily the Canadian dollar, were expected to negatively impact gross margins during the third quarter of 2015, the amount of impact was higher than originally anticipated as the Canadian dollar continued to weaken sequentially from the 2015 second quarter. The negative currency impact during the quarter along with higher promotional costs and negative product mix, were partially offset by lower commodity costs, cost savings from product cost reduction efforts and higher selling prices.

Business Protocol: Talk-show co-host's empowering message

Another in a continuing
series of women shattering the glass ceiling.

Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” show and founder of the “Know Your Value” movement for women, wakes up at 3:30 a.m. ready to go.

The mother of two teen girls, Emilie, 19, and Carlie, 17, said the secret is to have “a great attitude, a solid sense of your value … and thick skin.”

The daughter of Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security director under former President Jimmy Carter, was in Boston on Friday as part of her speaking series on empowering women in the workplace. I sat down with her just before Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh declared it “Know Your Value” day:

Being a woman in a man’s world: “I don’t think it’s a man’s world anymore, but I’ll go with the question because I work with a lot of men. I treat people the way they treat me. If a door is opened or a chair pulled out, that’s fine, but I’m 48 years old I have been around and I am sort of in that middle area and completely ambidextrous.”

Motivation: “I have been given an incredible platform to reach women and access my message, and finally do something to say, ‘Thank you.’ I see these women just completely explode, their eyes and mouths wide open and they’re like, ‘Yes, I can do this!’ ” She also credits her grandmother: “Those things I am teaching women on stage are things my grandmother taught me in her living room when I was 7 years old … and good posture is the beginning of everything.”

Advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs: “Stop apologizing. Don’t think about what you want, say it! Always look for opportunities and put yourself outside your comfort zone and learn how to command a room. Practice speaking and presenting at church, family celebrations … propose the toast!”

Appearance: “You need to relate to your audience and appearance is a major facet of your message. … I myself have had a couple style evolutions. There was a whole phase where I tried too hard to match the beauty queens in my business with the tight, bright dresses, cinched waists and extra eyelashes, and if I worked really hard, … if I killed myself, I could do it, but that isn’t me.” She has a clean, classic style and doesn’t like to spend a lot of time or money on clothes but says, “you can’t spend nothing, you have to invest in
today’s clothes.”

Wearing hosiery? “Oh my God, no!”

How do you handle adversity? “With humor. I face adversity every day because I am trying to do so many different things. Sometimes, you just have to hunker down and keep going and not … take the time to let it get to you.”

Marriage: “I tell women, especially younger women not to forget to get married and have a family because what’s the point of it all if you have no one to share it with?”

Being on TV: “I never knew how much I loved television until I lost my job (at CBS). I hadn’t worked for a year when I was approached for ‘Morning Joe.’ It was a surprise and a blessing” to be back in the game.

SLMM intensifies protests in Janakpur; bans movement of motorbikes for smuggling petrol to ...

Oct 26, 2015- The agitating Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha, who have been enforcing shutdown in various Tarai districts demanding amendment in the new constitution for the past one-and-a-half month, have intensified their protest in Janakpur district prohibiting the movement of motorcycles on Monday.

The Morcha that claims to have enforced the ongoing blockade in Nepal prohibited motorcycles citing they trafficked petroleum products, gas, medicine and food materials to various parts of the country including Capital.

A SLMM meeting held after Dashain festival had decided to allow motorcycles putting ‘black flag’ or party flag to run. However, due to increasing smuggling from such motorcyclists, the SLMM is thinking of putting a complete halt on their operation.

However, no official decision has been taken on this issue, according to Sadbhawana Party’s Dhanusa Chairman Sanjay Singh. Post Dashain, the blockade programme has been further intensified, along with continuation to their regular protests, Singh added.

Teachers Respond: Veteran Teachers Cry In Their Cars Too

One in 10 teachers will quit by the end of their first year — getting through October and November: especially tough. Having someone to support you along the way can help.

Turns out there’s a toolkit to help — as we wrote about this week. Thousands chimed in on Facebook, Twitter and in the comments section. Here are some takeaways from the discussion.

The “disillusionment phase” goes by another name:

“They may call it the “Disillusionment Phase” in this article … it’s actually DEVOLSON (dark evil vortex of late September, October, and November). It doesn’t only hit first year teachers.” – Jill Gorman Turner, on Facebook

Struggling as a new teacher is common:

“I can remember wishing several times that first year, ‘maybe no one will show up today!’ ” – Kodyo, on npr.org

“I am a first year teacher and I have been struggling. This article really resonated with me and reading these comments makes me feel like I’m not totally alone. I feel like I am drowning most days and I often cry in my car … I just feel so overwhelmed sometimes. It will get better, It will get better, It will get better.” – Melissa Ivins, on npr.org

And experienced teachers can be right there with them:

“Hey, veteran teachers, it’s still okay to cry in your car. Hopefully it happens less often, but if you’re still crying it means you’re still caring and that’s a good thing.” – Hilary Schardein, on Facebook

“Sometimes veteran teachers cry in their cars too. After 31 years of kids, parents and meetings a good cry (and a glass of wine) can help you gain perspective and try again the next day.” – Lauren Schwab, on Facebook

But many veterans did say it gets better:

“There is such a huge learning curve your first 3 yrs. You are not going to be awesome until you are at least 3-5 years in. Hang in there. You’ll get better.” – Jackie Doerner, on Facebook

Some readers chimed in with solutions, ranging from systemic:

“I love working in education but – we need a national movement to improve pay, class sizes , performance assessment , and professional development.” – Jeff Bockert, on Facebook

To incremental:

“… Just stick to it, cry when you need to, and when you are having a bad day, start picturing the kids who make your day good …” – barthur, on npr.org

And some said, actually, it’s not OK to cry in your car:

“Crying in your car is not something to be ashamed of, however it absolutely is not okay. There is too much pressure on teachers and their students and not enough support.” – Sarah Simone, on Facebook

A lot of people used the story to reach out to someone specific:

“Patty Clohessy…. this is why imma pick u up everyday from school and bring donuts” – Tasha Wierzal, on Facebook

“TPS teachers – don’t forget to check on your 1st yr colleagues and lend a helping hand! #SuccessTPS #TeachersROCK” – Deborah A. Gist, on Twitter

But also to no one in particular:

“Know a new(ish) teacher? Give him/her a hug, a latte, or a break. Teaching is hard, especially when you are new.” – Michelle Makus Shory, on Twitter

“I have enjoyed the discussion with my fellow teachers, newbies and grey and grizzled veterans alike, but now I have to make a test. Best of luck, and hang in there. What we do is worth doing to the best of our ability!” – Beverly Arthur, on npr.org

So, what do you think? Is it OK to cry in your car? Do you have advice for new teachers? We’re on Twitter at @npr_ed. Our Facebook page is here or you can drop us an email at NPREd@npr.org.

Arizona Hog Rally Bike Games

This week, there has been hundreds more motorcycles on the streets of Yuma this week as Saturday is day three of the Hog Rally.
This afternoon in downtown Yuma, there were the bike games, raffles, plenty of good food and fun. We caught up with the owner of the pink Harley, known as Miss Piggy. She is out of the East Valley Hog Chapter which is part of Desert Wind in Mesa.
She says she is called Miss Piggy because of her personality and her husband’s personality is like Kermit, so she says it fits.

Miss Piggy said, “I’m Miss Piggy, gotta make it show, I love everything female; jewels, pearl, necklaces, diamonds and bows. I mean how girly can you get? Piece by piece I “blinged” everything on the bike.”

Piggy said she won $450 in her softtail category.
