Triumph Motorcycles’ great escape from losses

Triumph Motorcycles has swung back into the black despite a fall in sales, after cutting out some overseas wholesale merchants.

The British bike maker, which is owned by the Derbyshire-based billionaire John Bloor, recorded a £10.1m pre-tax profit in the year to last June, according to accounts filed at Companies House. It lost £12.3m before tax in the year before.

Triumph sold 51,400 motorcycles, down from 57,900 — although it made higher margins after launching new models and reducing the amount of stock sent to wholesalers. Triumph said it expected the market for bikes to “remain challenging” but that it is planning to launch new models and poised to expand into Thailand.

Triumph was founded as a bicycle maker in Coventry in 1887, launching its first motorcycle in 1902.

Jump the Shark With Fonzie's Classic Triumph Motorcycle From 'Happy Days'

Fans of the classic ’70s sitcom Happy Days can indulge their inner Fonzie with this 1949 Triumph Trophy 500 that the famously cool character owned on the show. 

The bike, one of several that Henry Winkler’s perpetually leather-jacketed Arthur Fonzarelli co-starred with, is for sell on eBay for $100,000.

Autoblog ridiculously jumped a shark—could indeed be justified. 

The Triumph, which the seller describes as being in “filmed condition with all its studio scars,” is the last remaining example of the three used in the show built by motocross legend Bud Ekins, who served as Steve McQueen’s stunt double in The Great Escape.

The Fonz was given a Harley Davidson in the first season before switching to the custom Triumph, which is the same model ridden by Marlon Brando’s motorcycle tough Johnny Strabler in The Wild One.

But Winkler never really got the hang of the Triumph, and had to be pushed in and out of shots on Happy Days, which ran from 1974-1984. The British bike replaced the Fonz’s Harley in part because it was smaller, lighter and easier for stage hands to move around.

Winkler, for all his Fonzie bravado, never even knew how to ride the thing. “I am scared to death of motorcycles,” he told Cycle World in 2000. “That’s how good an actor I am.”

Burberry Is Making the Change to a Consumer-Facing Fashion Week Format

Burberry announced big changes to its fashion calendar on Friday: Beginning in September, the British brand will only feature two runway shows per year (as opposed to four), combining womenswear and menswear in September and February. Since Burberry will no longer stage a separate menswear show during London Collections: Men, the brand is currently figuring out a way to still participate in the men’s fashion calendar in some significant capacity.

Burberry’s new format for shows is specifically tailored to its consumers around the world and will follow a “see now, buy now” approach. Once a collection has made its debut, pieces will immediately be available for purchase both online and in stores, along with window displays and marketing materials aligned with the new collection. Versus Versace follows a similar model as its retailers promptly offer items for sale after a runway show, sometimes holding viewing parties for customers as well. Thakoon, who was acquired Hong Kong’s Bright Fame Fashion at the end of 2015, has overhauled its business model for a “show now, see now, buy now and wear now” strategy, too.

“Our shows have been evolving to close this gap for some time. From livestreams, to ordering straight from the runway to live social media campaigns, this is the latest step in a creative process that will continue to evolve,” said Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s chief creative and chief executive officer, in a statement.

Burberry has certainly kept up with the times: The brand has focused on increasing its digital marketing presence with campaigns on both Instagram and Snapchat, along with a channel on Apple Music. In November, the label announced plans to consolidate its diffusion lines (Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London and Burberry Brit) under one label in an effort to adapt to the new, “more fluid” behavior of the luxury customer. 

The British label joins the growing list of designers who have decided to eschew the traditional fashion calendar, either opting out of runway shows or making them more consumer-facing events. (The CFDA is currently holding an extensive study to rethink its Fashion Week format.) Considering that Burberry is one of the bigger fashion brands to do so is a bold move, especially among its luxury peers. We’re looking forward to seeing how this transition plays out come September — and who else might follow suit.

Auto Expo 2016: Top 10 Cars

The 2016 Delhi Auto Expo was all about showing not only India, but the world that the car manufacturers here are all set to bombard the country with countless new cars. Of course all car manufacturers wanted a piece of the pie and that’s why we witnessed 92 launches and unveilings which included more than 20 global unveilings. It was difficult to pick out the top but there were some which outdid the others and here’s our list of the top 10 cars at the show

1) Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
 

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza marks the country’s largest carmaker’s entry into the highly-competitive sub-compact SUV segment, which fields cars like Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300. Scheduled to be launched in March, the Maruti Vitara Brezza will only come in diesel trim and will be offered in a total of six variants – LDi, LDi (O), VDi, VDi (O), ZDi and ZDi+.

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will be available only with the 1.3-litre diesel engine as of now, while a petrol engine will be added later in 2016. Furthermore, the automatic variant could come either by 2016 or 2017. One must note, that Maruti Suzuki expects to sell over 5000 units every month. Expect the price of the car to start from 6 lakh and that’s clearly very enticing.

2) Ford Mustang
 

The much awaited 6th generation of the American muscle car will soon be launched in India and for those who want a glimpse of the car, the Auto Expo is the best place to meet and greet it. The car will go on sale in India from the 2nd quarter this year. The India-spec Ford Mustang GT will arrive via CBU and the expected to come bearing a price tag of around 60 lakh.

Under the hood the new Ford Mustang GT will be offered with only one engine option – the 5.0-litre V8 which throws out 435bhp of power and 524Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are performed by a 6-speed Select Shift autobox with steering-mounted paddle shifters.

3) Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai has showcased the 3rd generation Tucson premium compact SUV at the Auto Expo 2016. The new Tucson bridges the gap between the Creta and Santa Fe in Hyundai’s Indian SUV line-up. The car falls in line with the company’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 (FS2.0) design philosophy and look quite similar to its bigger sibling (Santa Fe).

The Hyundai Tucson’s soft touch and visibly upmarket interiors come riddled with high-tech features both in terms of comfort and safety. The car features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with in-built sat-nav, Smart Parking Assist System (SPAS), electric tailgate, blind spot assistance, autonomous braking, heated seats and steering wheel, seat ventilation, power adjustable seats, heated reclining rear seats, and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS). The car will be launched in India this year and will compete with the likes of the Nissan X-Trail and the Honda CR-V.

4) BMW X1

The next-gen BMW X1 was at the 2016 Auto Expo. Currently being offered only with a diesel variant, the new BMW X1’s price starts at 29.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), and goes all the way up to 39.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The new BMW X1 SUV is based on the UKL platform that allows it to shed 135Kgs. It also gets improved cabin space, thanks to the taller and wider body shell. The all-new BMW X1’s wheelbase has been increased by 90mm, and also sports an 85-litre increase in boot space and a 37mm increase in rear knee room. Well, BMW has tried to bring in a lot of changes in the car and it’s now more appealing than ever.

5) Toyota Innova Crysta

The new Toyota Innova was finally been unveiled in India at Auto Expo and is likely to go on sale in the country by the end of 2016. The MPV’s second generation model, which was launched in Indonesia in November last year, is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. It’s in fact the most awaited of launches in India.

Toyota has made a number of changes to the exterior and interior of the MPV. The Toyota Innova Crysta is more premium and sophisticated than it has ever been and we hope that there are a host of changes made to the driving dynamics as well. The 2016 Innova’s cabin gets automatic climate control, power windows, steering-mounted controls, touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB and AUX-IN. However, most of these features are only available in the top-end variants.

Moving on to the MPV’s engine options, the new Toyota Innova is offered with a choice of 2 engines – a 2.0-litre VVT-i petrol and the new 2.4-litre GD diesel. While the petrol motor puts out 137bhp along with 183Nm of peak torque, the diesel unit promises 147bhp and 342Nm (manual) and 360Nm (automatic) of maximum torque. Transmission options include a manual and a 6-speed automatic.

6) Honda BR-V

Based on the extended Brio platform, the Honda BR-V seems to have taken some of its design cues from the Mobilio MPV. Though features such as improved ground clearance, black plastic cladding around body, roof rails and 16-inch alloy wheels render it a compact SUV look.

Powering the Honda BR-V could be the same 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel powertrains that do duty on some of Honda’s existing cars including the City. Transmission options on offer could be a 5-speed manual gearbox and a CVT automatic. Yes, it is a 7-seater and from the looks of it a bit more spacious, especially in the third row. We expect the car to hit the Indian car market in the festive season of 2016.

7) Audi R8 V10

The new Audi R8 is a real looker and comes with a single-frame front grille with a honeycomb pattern, flanked by standard flat LED head-lights or optional laser lighting clusters, which double the range to 600 meters.

The side profile of the car gets curved contours and a prominent shoulder line interconnecting the wheels, and also dividing the side blades in two. This makes the R8 look longer than before, according to Audi. The LED tail-lights sit above the generously sized air inlets that give the R8 its muscular stance. The Plus model gets a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) fixed rear wing. The large diffuser sits between trapezoidal exhaust pipes, while the rear window provides for a view of the engine.

The Audi R8 V10 Plus is powered by a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 engine which has an output of 610bhp. In terms of performance, the car does the 0-100Km/h sprint in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 330Km/h.

8) Volkswagen Ameo

It is the first sub-4 metre sedan to be launched by Volkswagen in the country and marks the German carmaker’s entry into this highly competitive territory. The biggest highlight of the car is the fact that Volkswagen has designed the car for the Indian market and will be manufactured here in the company’s Chankan plant.

The Volkswagen Ameo is based on the carmaker’s popular hatchback Polo and shares some of its key design and style cues. The front end of the car might look a little identical to the Polo but, the Ameo gets new headlamps, sporty front bumper, horizontal fog lamps, wide air dam and some considerable chrome detailing.

Under the hood the new the Volkswagen Ameo will borrow the 1.2-litre MPI petrol and the 1.5-litre TDI diesel engines from the VW Polo hatchback. Transmission duties will include Volkswagen’s signature DSG unit. The car will be launched in the second half of 2016 and we’ll get to know more then.

9) Jaguar XE
 

The new Jaguar XE sports saloon has been officially launched in India with prices starting at 39.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) at the 2016 Auto Expo. The most attainable offering from the car maker rivals the likes of Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3-Series as well as the Audi A4 in the segment offering the highly appreciated styling coupled with frugal yet powerful engines on board.

Measuring 4672mm in length, 1850mm in width and 4672mm in height with a wheelbase of 2835mm, the Jaguar XE is based on an all-new monocoque platform made of 75 percent lightweight aluminium that helps in extensive weight savings. The car also gets a sophisticated suspension with a double wishbone setup at the front and an independent integral link system at the rear, translated from the bigger models.

The lightweight chassis on the Jaguar XE is mated to the powerful newly developed Ingenium family of engines under the hood. A 2.0-litre unit produces 180PS at 4000rpm and 430Nm of torque between 1750-2500rpm on the diesel, while the petrol motor of the same capacity belts out 200PS at 5500rpm and 320Nm of torque between 1750-4000rpm. Both motors come paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

10) Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee
 

We’ve waited to see this brand in India for a long time and finally it’s here. The company is planning to open separate dealerships in all major cities in the country, though it might initially use Fiat’s existing network to initially sell its cars. All the Jeep products will come as CBUs (completely built-up units), though the company may later on start assembling them here using completely knocked-down units. The cars will be launched in India in the next few months and we’ll see both the Cherokee and the Wrangler on our roads soon.

DSK Benelli showcases four India-bound motorcycles at Auto Expo 2016

DSK Benelli is fast expanding its impressive, well priced range of assembled motorcycles in India. Four upcoming new additions to its bike range are all proudly on display at the Auto Expo 2016, each as detailed below:

Tornado 302

Essentially, the Tornado 302 is a faired-up version of the TNT 300. The Tornado 302 features an aerodynamic looking fairing, with a clear visor in place for those tuck and twist situations. The Tornado 302 comes with an angular fuel-tank, with nicely designed knee recesses and a split-seat that tapers off into a sporty tail.

The Tornado 302 is powered by a four-stroke, 300cc, in-line two cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that makes 34.8bhp at 12,000rpm, and a healthy 2.7kgm of torque at 9,000rpm. The Tornado 302 comes with a six-speed gearbox, and relies on a steel tube frame. The Tornado 302 uses an USD fork suspension in front and a monoshock system at the rear.

Braking is via a set of dual, 260mm petal type discs in the front, with a single 240mm rear disc brake, and an ABS system is in place for added safety. Tyres are by Metzeler, on 17 inch wheels. Unfortunately, the Tornado 302 makes do with a box section swingarm rather than a more up-market alluminium alloy unit. Expect the Tornado 302 in Indian showrooms by around May 2016.

TRK 502

Benelli’s TRK 502 is coming to India around Aug this year, an adventure motorcycle, that has very little in common with the larger Benelli TreK adventure bike. It looks more like the larger and more Bavarian adventure motorcycles from BMW– but a tad smaller in size, perhaps a good thing in India. The fuel-tank capacity is a tourer-friendly 20 litres.

The TRK 502 is powered by a four-stroke, 499.6cc, in-line two-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that runs four-valves per cylinder. It makes 46.9bhp of power at 8,500rpm and you have 4.6kgm of torque at 4,500rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed unit, while the chassis is tubular steel-fabricated.

For suspension, the TRK 502 uses USD forks in the front and a pre-load adjustable rear monoshock. Braking is carried out by Brembo 320mm, twin petal type discs in the front, while at the rear there’s a single disc unit that measures 260mm. Ground clearance is a tall 230mm, that’s expected from an adventure motorcycle. 

The TRK 502 provides riders the safety net of ABS brakes. The Benelli TRK 502 at the Auto Expo came with on-and-off-road tyres, not full knobbies, a 19 inch wheel in front and 17 inch at the rear, both from Metzeler. 

BX 250

Benelli is showing solid vision, by bringing the BX 250 motard bike to India. The BX 250 comes powered by a 250cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that outputs in the region of a full 25bhp. 

Add to the equation the BX 250’s relatively light dry weight of 132kg and you are guaranteed to be looking at really lively performance. 

The generously equipped BX 250’s steel tubular frame comes with thick, purposeful-looking USD front forks and a linkage equipped monoshock setup at the rear. The state of Indian roads means good suspension travel, an upright comfortable riding position and quick performance are all welcome traits to look for from your motorcycle. The BX 250 is expected to come to India by the end of 2016, and has the potential to throw open a completely unexplored, attractive new motorcycle segment, that’s in truth really apt for India.   

TNT T 135

An interesting addition to the DSK Benelli line-up is the petite looking, TNT Naked T 135, to come to India within 2016. 

Fitting the description of a ‘monkey bike’ which could have you see it as somewhat related to the Honda Navi, the T-135 looks unique for its utilitarian design and 12 inch wheels. The T 135 comes powered by a single-cylinder, air-cooled, 135cc engine that makes 12.6bhp. Held together by a trellis frame, the T 135 uses top spec USD front forks and a monoshock at the rear.  

It will be interesting to see how Benelli positions this new bike in India.

TNT 600i and 600GT

Benelli is soon to offer its TNT 600i and 600GT models with twin channel ABS brakes, and both the upgraded bikes were on display at the Benelli Auto Expo stall. The availability of a switchable ABS system will address a major shortcoming noted on almost all the big Benellis.

Benelli parent company in India DSK is yet to reveal pricing for the new ABS equipped 600s, but we do know they shall both slip into showrooms as soon as March 2016.

The idyllic Isle of Man off the west coast of England is known for many things, from its castles and forts, coastal views and even a world famous motorbike race.

But residents of the island could soon see driverless cars winding their way along its country roads under plans to turn it into a self-driving ‘hub’.

The Manx government is currently trying to tempt car and technology companies to the island to road-test their autonomous vehicles.

Transportation minister Phil Gawne is trying to lure companies with the prospect of a scale trial of the vehicles on working roads.

With a population of 90,000 people, the island has the infrastructure in place for a real-world trial.

In addition, the Isle of Man’s autonomy means it is able to make changes to local legislation which could speed up the process.

Speaking to the Washington Post, Gawne said: ‘We like to be innovative on the island.’

He added: ‘We like also to be independent. This helps both those areas in terms of our international image and reputation.’

And the wheels are already in motion, as the Manx government has reportedly started discussions with a number of companies about tests.

‘We can see a lot of potential advantages for the island. It also helps in terms of the image of Isle of Man.’

The findings are likely to be revealed later this month.

While the development of driverless vehicles has come a long way, they have largely been controlled tests, often on purpose-built roads.

In Ann Arbor, Michigan, for example, engineers and transportation researchers recently built a huge city road system for testing self-driving cars.

One of the biggest contenders in the field, Google, has been largely testing its autonomous vehicles on the streets of California. 

However, the tech giant has complained about the state’s rigid legislation around autonomous vehicles.

The legislation of the Isle of Man could prove attractive to the likes of Google.

MailOnline contacted Google but the California-based firm declined to comment.

Four UK cities are currently enrolled in a trial of autonomous vehicles, which will see driverless cars tested in Coventry, Milton Keynes, Bristol and Greenwich, in south-east London. 

It was revealed last week that the first driverless cars to hit London’s streets will begin testing in the summer as part of the £8 million Gateway project.

One of the big players in the field is Google, which has been testing its driverless cars on the streets of California. A similar trial could take place on the Isle of Man

The vehicles will be adapted from shuttle pods already being used to ferry passengers at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5, but are now being developed to work without their dedicated tracks.

It is expected that seven of the cars, which resemble small automated train carriages, will be tested out on the streets of Greenwich, south London, this July as part of three pilot schemes. 

The Gateway (Greenwich Automated Transport Environment) project funded by Innovate UK, and will take place in Greenwich later this year.

It will trial a series of different use cases for automated vehicles, including driverless shuttles, autonomous valet parking and deliveries.

The hope is that by understanding public perception, reaction and engagement with the vehicles the trials will help introduce automated transport widely. 

The UltraPods have been operating at Heathrow for nearly five years, carrying 1.5 million passengers and completed three million kilometres during that time.

FORD IS TESTING SELF-DRIVING CARS IN A FAKE MICHIGAN TOWN 

Ford’s winter weather testing takes place in Michigan, including at Mcity – a 32-acre, fake urban environment at the University of Michigan.

It is part of the university’s Mobility Transformation Centre.

Ford Fusion Hybrid Autonomous Research Vehicle merges today’s driver-assist technologies, such as front-facing cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, and adds four LiDAR sensors to generate a real-time 3D map of the vehicle’s surrounding environment.

The full-scale urban environment provides real-world road scenarios, such as running a red light, which can’t be replicated on public roads.

There are street lights, crossings, lane markings, curb cuts, bike lanes, trees, hydrants, pavements, signs, traffic control devices and even construction barriers.

Royal Enfield sets out for the Himalayan odyssey

After months of leaked images, Royal Enfield finally made the Himalayan official today with an event a day before the 2016 Auto Expo. The Himalayan is the first all-new motorcycle from the company in its history and that is a pretty significant deal.

The company’s MD and CEO said that not even a pin was borrowed from the existing product lines in the creation of the Himalayan. The motorcycle was designed for the mountains from scratch but it was clear that there was no intention to make it an extreme motorcycle.

The motorcycle has been in development for a while and Royal Enfield say they have spared no expense and effort in testing and ensuring that the motorcycle works as planned. Testing has spanned full motorcycles and parts in all kinds of temperatures and terrain. They are confident they have an excellent motorcycle here.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is powered by a completely new 411cc single cylinder engine called the LS410 – Long Stroke 410. The counterbalanced engine uses an SOHC valve train with two valves. Bore and stroke are 78mm and 86mm – a long-stroke engine is usually a good solution to make torque. The promise is certainly good. Peak torque is 32Nm between 4,000 and 4,500rpm. Peak power is 24.5PS at 6,500rpm. This sounds low for a 411cc engine but you have to remember that outright top speed – and therefore top-end punch – isn’t the story of this motorcycle. Off-road riding, streets and highways require performance between 30 and 130kmph and it’s torque, not peak power that does the work. The fat torque curve is also the reason Royal Enfield has gone with a 5-speed gearbox.

The carburetted engine has been questioned as being too simple a specification. But Royal Enfield have said earlier that they wanted to make simple, approachable, involving motorcycles that people can enjoy. And in the case of a breakdown, fix. However, given the fact that tighter emissions norms are looming and that ABS might soon be mandatory, you can be sure that the company has both of the technologies ready to deploy if needed on the Himalayan.

The engine sits in a half-duplex split cradle frame – all-new. Suspension is a 41mm front fork with 200mm travel. The rear shock is a Royal Enfield first, a linkage-type monoshock that offers 180mm of wheel travel. For reference, the Thunderbird offers 130mm and 80mm of wheel travel, respectively. It is an all-new frame that we are certain will show up in other motorcycles later with different geometry and suspension. The Himalayan uses a 90/90-21″ tyre up front, a Ceat Gripp, but that’s a popular size for off-road motorcycles, so many tyre options should be easy to get. The rear tyre is a 120/90-17, another easy size to find. Royal Enfield had earlier indicated that these tyres were chosen to stay light enough for the Himalayan to be easy to handle.

The wheelbase is 1,465mm, seat height is a not too tall 800mm and the kerbweight – we’re happy to hear – is just 182kg. With a 15-litre tank, this promises effortless performance and tank range that you will appreciate.

The brakes are a 300mm disc in front and a 240mm disc at the rear. ABS is currently not on the agenda – but as we said, you can be sure Royal Enfield has it ready to roll if the Indian Government stops talking and starts doing.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan also has widely spaced service intervals as well as 10,000km oil change intervals. The Royal Enfield Himalayan will go on sale in March and that’s when prices and delivery plans will be revealed. We expect the motorcycle to be priced around Rs 2 lakh ex-showroom.

American offers Dh6 million for rare Ferrari in Dubai Police pound

An unknown American has offered Dh6 million to buy a rare Enzo Ferrari that has been in police custody in Dubai for nearly six years.

But the offer was rejected as the vehicle is wanted by the Interpol, Dubai’s traffic police chief has said.

Colonel Saif Al Mazroui described the car as a ‘masterpiece’ and said it has attracted the attention of many people seeking to acquire the expensive cars.

He told the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm that the vehicle is wanted by the Interpol and has also been the subject of a legal dispute in the emirate.

“An American has offered to buy the car for Dh6 million, but we cannot release the vehicle for sale or auction because it is still under dispute,” he said.

“This car is a real masterpiece as only just over 300 having been produced by the company. Several people have offered to buy it, while others have queried about it.”

In a report last week, Emarat Al Youm said the car trades at nearly $3 million (Dh11 million) and that it is a limited edition vehicle made on demand.

“The car has been there for more than six years. Dubai Police have moved it to another location to protect it following a report by the paper,” it said.

The Ferrari is a 12-cylinder mid-engine supercar named after the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari.

It was designed by Ken Okuyama, a famous Japanese designer, and initially announced at the 2002 Paris Motor Show with a limited production run of 349.

The company sent invitations to existing customers, specifically those who had previously bought the F40 and F50.

All 349 cars were sold before production even began. Later, after numerous requests, Ferrari decided to build 50 more Enzos, bringing the total to 399.
