WSVN — The day started with a Sunday afternoon motorcycle ride, but it ended in blood and broken bones. As Patrick Fraser tells us on tonight’s Out for Justice, the Florida Highway Patrol is asking for your help tonight in finding a reckless driver.

If you know someone who loves to ride motorcycles, they have probably told you there is nothing like it. Mike and Karla were like many who love to hit the road on their bike.

Karla Winslow: “It was a brand-new one, a Harley CVO Street Glide. We enjoyed riding as much as we could.”

Then, three months ago, on Sunday, February 8, Mike and Karla were on I-75 near the Indian Trace exit going to meet friends for lunch.

Karla Winslow: “All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I saw this car out of the corner of my left eye. I didn’t even have time to yell his name. Something hit me on the head, and then I remember absolutely nothing.”

Witnesses told the Florida Highway Patrol the car was a silver BMW 300 series.

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark G. Wysocky: “Traveling westbound at high speed. As the vehicle approached the motorcycle and attempted to pass the motorcycle, it changed lanes, causing the driver of the motorcycle to lose control and overturn.”

FHP Cpl. Baker: “Right here is where the actual bodies were at final rest.”

People stopped their cars to help. As Karla regained consciousness, the badly injured Michael was trying to find her.

Karla Winslow: “I heard Michael’s voice yell, ‘Where’s my wife? Karla, where are you?’ And I yelled back, ‘I’m here.’ That’s the last time I heard his voice.”

Michael slipped into a coma and died in the hospital. Karla suffered several broken bones but is doing better.

Karla Winslow: “I’m alive and that’s the main thing, and I — but Michael’s not.”

And the driver of the silver BMW took off.

Sgt. Wysocky: “The witness said that the BMW did hit his brakes just after changing lanes, so he may have known that he did something. Whether he knew that he hit the vehicle or just caused the vehicle to lose control when he changed lanes is what we have to determine.”

Karla says he slowed down because the driver knew exactly what he had done.

Karla Winslow: “The car was about four inches away from me when I first saw it. I know that he hit us. It’s not even a question; we were hit.”

Patrick Fraser: “Investigators say the BMW may have had some paint on the rear of the car from hitting the bike, or if he barely missed, there may not be any trace of the motorcycle at all, but either way, it doesn’t change what he did. He knew he caused an accident, he took off, and investigators want to talk to him.

Sgt. Wysocky: “We need someone to come forward and contact the Florida Highway Patrol. If they have any information about the crash, or know anything about the crash, to contact us with information that will help our investigators.”

Someone driving a BMW like this swerved and killed a man. Someone who is enjoying their life, maybe watching this right now.

Karla Winslow: “There is a brother, sister, mother, father, neighbor, friend, someone who knows who did this, and I’m just hoping that they can find it in their heart just to come forward.”

If you know who is to blame for killing Michael Scott Deck, pick up the phone and call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. And if you have lost a loved one and want to remind people you are still out for justice, give us a call. With this Out for Justice, I’m Patrick Fraser, 7News.

Paul Smith's Charming Silhouette

May 15, 2015 10:50 p.m. ET

Most hot names in fashion shine bright for a few years and then burn out. But the rulers of the fashion galaxy—stars whose luminosity keeps burning by virtue of their creative core—are few and include Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, and Paul Smith.

Over 40 years ago, at the age of 24, Paul Smith set up shop in a Lilliputian men’s boutique in his East Midlands hometown of Nottingham, 100 miles northwest of London. Today, Sir Paul oversees a $300 million global empire spanning 73 countries; 315 stores bear his name, and his brand has a significant presence in 1,500 department stores. Smith owns 60% of the privately held company. The firm’s Japanese master licensee, Itochu, is his minority partner, and with good reason. Smith enjoys a kind of cult status in Japan, with an impressive 250 shops around the country.

The Paul Smith firm employs more than 1,000 people overall, and, according to Managing Director Ashley Long, carries no debt and has seen steady growth in profits for the past 25 years. Paul Smith’s customer is often likened to a “creative type” between the ages of 25 to 50—but don’t underestimate his appeal among knowledgeable and sophisticated Wall Street men.

Part of Smith’s charm and appeal is his studiously unpretentious manner—despite his rock-star status. “He is the icon of British menswear,” says Simon Doonan, Barney’s creative ambassador, brandishing a Paul Smith $245 two-toned merino-wool cardigan that he purchased for himself at Barney’s. “He has a great understanding of men. He is a highly important part of Barney’s—as well as men’s clothing.” But when we tell Smith he is universally considered England’s most successful and influential menswear designer, the lanky 68-year-old says, “I think I’m OK.”

Such self-deprecating remarks flow steadily; during our talk, he likens his formidable Roman nose to the nose of his now-departed Afghan hound, Homer. And he deploys that same playful humor when reinventing the best of English tailoring, cheekily turning Savile Row conventions on their ear.

Paul Smith’s menswear has six lines appealing to disparate ages and tastes. His runway collection, or Mainline, is edgy and youth-driven, while his London line of suits, shirts, ties, pocket squares, and more are for the conservative dresser with a touch of the inner peacock. Smith’s trademarks, for example, are a smart and well-cut jacket with a colorful silk inner lining, and lavender stitching on a lapel buttonhole.

His PS by Paul Smith label incorporates gossamer polos (starting at $165) for the head honcho on holiday and “acid jungle” T-shirts ($230) for his skateboarding son. He also designs women’s clothing and engages in countless collaborations with everyone from Mini Cooper (the car is entirely covered in the signature Paul Smith bar code of colorful razor-thin stripes) to Led Zeppelin (limited-edition scarves evoking the band’s albums). “Paul Smith’s corporate vision is to be himself,” says Deyan Sudjic, head of London’s Design Museum. “That is the brand.”

Indeed, each Paul Smith store (no two are alike) reflects the authenticity of his unjaded, boyishly enthusiastic self. Step inside and you feel as if you’ve stepped into a funky Bloomsbury men’s club.

WE ENTERED HIS CAST-IRON New York flagship on Greene Street in SoHo, and were instantly amused by a black leather billfold in an overlaid striped pattern, with the Paul Smith Mini Cooper depicted on the inside ($375, see photo below). A brown leather belt, of which the keeper, or loop, bears his vintage stripe ($155), was discreetly chic. Smith’s novel cuff links are legendary: Lift off with toy copper rockets ($125, see photo below), or stay seated at a board meeting with his name in various motifs—as in his rectangular brown leather-like links stitched with the words “Paul Smith” ($140)—radiating conservative cool.

Smith was the forerunner in persuading guys to don striped socks and floral shirts without feeling emasculated. His current crop doesn’t disappoint: An indigo floral-patterned shirt ($285) worn open-collared is smashing when paired with a pinstripe suit.

Paul Smith is known for his offbeat accessories. Above, a $375 billfold with overlaid stripes and an image of the Mini Cooper he designed. Photo: Courtesy of Paul Smith

Smith has built a powerful reputation for his shoes, which include such best sellers as the $395 Robin—a sleek, black leather toe cap with blue laces and a minuscule “stripe” along the back—or the $295 Rabbit, a white sneaker adorned with a variation of the Smith stripe. Both look superb, night or day, with your 501s.

LEATHER GOODS AND SUITS make up the company’s two fastest-growing categories. Smith’s bespoke suits start at about $4,500, fitted by his London-based tailors, who visit the U.S. throughout the year. Off-the-rack suiting, made of Super 150 wool, encompasses six different fits, catering to physiques from super-svelte to broad–shouldered. It’s a welcome change from 20 years ago, when only the emaciated could squeeze themselves into his skinny suits, now a menswear staple.

A smart yet conservative two-button, double-vented glen-plaid in burgundy, navy, and aubergine (eggplant) is pure Paul Smith, with its oversize pattern and undersize price tag of $1,485. And a light-blue wool ensemble with a dotted lining for $1,600 is a distinctive and welcome option to everyday navy. You’ll be a cut different when you casually toss your jacket over a shoulder and slyly reveal Smith’s deep lavender or tie-dye silk lining.

“It’s for a guy who knows what he’s doing and wants that extra 10%,” says Esquire’s fashion director, Nick Sullivan. “It’s better than the boring stuff and safer than the weird stuff. And good value for the money. Plus, he makes a damn good suit.”

The Mainline fare—seen on the runway in Paris each season—is more weekend than office. That is, unless you work alone—particularly in the case of a dinner jacket with a half-baked, trendy shawl collar, for $1,675. It’s a Smith miss, which does happen on occasion, and in this case smacks of a wannabe celebrity working with a desperate stylist. Head instead for the sweaters: A wild Caribbean jungle-art crew neck has just the right vibe for a bonfire on the beach or a summer jaunt to Portugal ($1,205).Overall, Smith’s casual wear accounts for 60% of his sales.

All good fun, particularly when you know that either Paul Smith or his spirit is in the back room, working hard at keeping it real.

Bruce Pask is Bergdorf Goodman’s men’s fashion director, but his first job out of the College of William and Mary was as a stock boy at Smith’s lower Fifth Avenue store in New York. “His personality is everywhere,” Pask says. “Clients appreciate it when they can see his hand in everything. He always made a point of remembering my name—even if I was just a stock boy below.”

Smith, whose father was a Nottingham door-to-door household-goods salesman, could have decamped years ago to some sunny isle—or bought himself an entire archipelago. Instead, he prefers to be in his office before dawn, listening to a Van Morrison vinyl after a swim at London’s Royal Automobile Club. In these early hours, he writes postcards to thousands of fans who send him letters, everywhere from Japan to the Ivory Coast. “I think, ‘How in the heck do they know I exist?’ ” he says of the Ivory Coast missive. “I’m in this world called fashion, but, in fact, I couldn’t be further away, because I’m a very down-to-earth guy.”

While some of this might at times appear a little studied, there’s still enough authenticity to make it convincing. Smith insists he doesn’t use a computer, read e-mails, or look at texts, and he rarely picks up a cellphone. His staff sifts through the 800 or so work e-mails he receives each day, because, he says. “I don’t want to clutter my mind. I’m the boss. I have to be lucid, original.”

His Luddite stance is rather ironic, considering that one of his greatest admirers is Apple’s senior vice president of development, Jonathan Ive, who designed the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, and once sent Smith a six-foot-tall iPod.

BUT THERE’S ALSO A corporate point to all of this self-imposed simplicity. “Today’s fashion,” Smith says, “is about companies comparing themselves to what other brands are doing. My way of working is with my head rather than forecasts.” He has rebuffed countless takeover offers, so “I don’t have shareholders breathing down my neck. I like the idea of spontaneity. It’s all about balance. Not everything is just for profit.”

The label could be bigger, but Smith has expanded cautiously over the years, doesn’t believe in swanky grand openings, and has always refrained from multimillion-dollar advertising campaigns festooned with celebrity mugs.

His schedule, meanwhile, is tightly booked eight months in advance, and—good news for road warriors—he’s soon going to reveal a crease-resistant suit for travel, inspired by his own wanderlust.

Smith is most famous for his quirky cuff links; above, a pair featuring copper rockets ($125). Photo: Courtesy of Paul Smith

His newest store opening is a third New York locale that debuted in late March, at Brookfield Place in the Financial District. “It’s a very astute move,” says a New York competitor. “He toes the line between tradition and fashion [for] a young financial guy who wants to explore but still have that office allure.” Future plans include China and India.

Vogue’s international editor-at-large, the perennially best-dressed Hamish Bowles, savors his Paul Smith French navy-blue double-breasted suit with pink silk lining, “which they would have never done on Savile Row.”

Bowles finds the Paul Smith’s aura indispensable for his work. “As an editor for fairly straight-laced publications, I need to project a professional look but still stay true to myself,” he says. “[Smith’s] clothes have personality and yet are aptly conservative enough. He straddles the market between Condé Nast and Goldman Sachs.”

The Smith formula for success, in short, is never to have a formula, presenting only the best of British tailoring with a slightly mischievous and self-deprecating grin worn on the sleeve. As Barney’s Doonan observes, “He’s just a good bloke who never stops.”

And neither do his suits, which are eminently fun and respectable, and always look fresh.

Google is ready to take the self-driving cars it designed onto public roads. Reportedly the cars will hit the streets starting this summer, at a brisk 25mph.

According to Google these cars have logged nearly a million autonomous hours on the road, which is nearly 10,000 miles spent driving a week. The amount of time spent by these autonomous cars equals 75 years of typical American adult driving experience.

The Internet-search giant plans to put a “few” of its small cars on roads in Mountain View, California, this summer, graduating from the test track, Chris Urmson, director of the self-driving project said Friday in a blog post.

Initially, these vehicles will be capped at 25 miles per hour (40 kph). In the next phase of testing drivers will be able to remove the steering wheel, accelerator pedal and brake pedal.

“It’s an important step in that it is their own vehicle,” said Susan Shaheen, co-director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at the University of California at Berkeley. “Google X works on innovation and disruption, and I think the automated vehicle has a lot of those features.”

“We’re looking forward to learning how the community perceives and interacts with the vehicles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle — e.g., where it should stop if it can’t stop at its exact destination due to construction or congestion,” Urmson added.

Dyess Reminds Drivers to Watch Out for Motorcyclists

After losing one of their own in a motorcycle accident over the weekend, Dyess Air Force Base is reminding drivers to always watch out for motorcycles.

There are about 377 airmen registered in Dyess’ database that are permitted to ride motorcycles.

Sadly, that number decreased by one on Saturday after a motorcycle accident took the life of a 24-year-old Dyess Airmen.

Including that incident, in the last 5-6 years, 3 airmen have lost their lives in motorcycle wrecks.

We spoke with the Dyess Deputy Chief of Safety Jack Wylie about the measures Dyess takes to assure airmen’s safety on the bike.

Wylie says before an active duty airmen rides a motorcycle, they are required to take rider’s course with the military.

Also, all motorcyclists are required to have annual briefings on the course and all units are required to have a motorcycle safety representative in their unit.

Wylie says good advice for motorcyclists is ‘make yourself visible and don’t be unpredictable.’

'There is no reason why your gender should hold you back in any job': Meet the women making ...

MEET the women who are
 determined to make their way
 in a man’s world.

Julie Dickson, Alexandra Preston and Kirsteen Munro are three of the few women in the male-dominated world of modern apprenticeships.

They are breaking the industrial mould by training as engineers
and all three say they are proud to
be helping lead the way for women
in their field of work right across
 Scotland.

The women all felt that
apprenticeships were more appealing than higher or further education courses and have worked their way
up through the training schemes at Scottish Gas.

This year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week launches on Monday and there is a real drive to encourage young people into trades and industry, particularly young women.

Engineering has traditionally
been seen as one of the most
male-dominated sectors but more and more girls are now considering it
as an option. And women already working in the field are hoping as many of those jobs as possible will
be taken up by other women.

Fiona Stewart, head of national training programme operations with Skills Development Scotland said: “We need more young women to take up the apprenticeships offered by many employers across Scotland.

“There are plenty of opportunities across different sectors and
apprenticeships are no longer
just for men.

“It can be complex, technical work but we’re really encouraged by the calibre of young women increasingly choosing an apprenticeship as a viable and rewarding alternative to university.

“Apprenticeship schemes benefit not just the career prospects of young people but our communities and the wider economy, too.”

Julie Dickson

WHEN Julie Dickson started working in the gas industry, she wasn’t surprised to find she was the only woman on the premises.

But she says she feels right at home in the hard-working world of engineering and hopes more women will soon be joining her in the Scottish Gas workforce.

The 24-year-old was keen to follow in her father’s footsteps.

She said: “My dad works for an aerospace engineering company and started his career as an apprentice.

“When I was 14, his firm had a ‘Bring your child to work day’ and I remember being really interested in the kind of work he was doing.

“I always enjoyed practical classes at school and started to think engineering would be the right job for me.”

Julie Dickson is looking to follow in her dad’s footsteps

Julie, from Hamilton, is working towards becoming a fully qualified service engineer as part of the five-year scheme offered at the Scottish Gas academy.

She says she gets total respect from other apprentices – despite being the only female on the course.

Julie said: “There are no barriers for women looking for a career in the industry.

“On my first day, I wasn’t surprised to discover I was the only female in the whole facility. I know from experience that females are not encouraged to go down the apprenticeship route at school.

“I’m treated no differently than my male colleagues and the encouragement I get from my instructors is amazing.

“I’d like to think I could be an inspiration to women looking to get into engineering. I want to set an example by working through my apprenticeship to become one of the top engineers in my field.

“With hard work and a bit of determination, it doesn’t matter if you’re male or female.”

Julie wants to encourage more young people to consider engineering as a serious option for the future.

She added: “It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m being paid to learn on the job and guaranteed employment at the end of my training.”

Alexandra Preston

WHEN Alexandra Preston finished high school, she never imagined she would end up working in a male-dominated industry.

Now, she couldn’t see herself doing anything else and while she admits it’s tough, she loves the challenge.

Alexandra, 22, from Bishopton, Renfrewshire, said: “It can be tough – especially at the start when you are learning everything from scratch – but you make a mistake once you learn not to do it again.”

When she left school, the idea of spending years at university didn’t appeal so she decided to take up a trade instead.

Paul Chappells/Daily Record

Alexandra Preston is loving the challenge

She joined the apprenticeship scheme at Scottish Gas and now, after completing her two-year training, is a fully qualified service repair engineer.

Alexandra said: “The thought of going to university for three years then not getting a job didn’t appeal to me.

“I’ve always been very practical and liked the idea of learning on the job and having a trade for life.”

She added: “The apprenticeship is hands-on and you get to work with the very best people in the industry – and gain qualifications.

“I was able to learn a host of skills and I’m now a fully qualified engineer. I can repair a boiler or damaged radiator.”

After completing her apprenticeship five years ago, Alexandra was offered a full-time position.

She said: “Taking on an apprenticeship is the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Kirsteen Munro

AFTER leaving school with a solid set of qualifications, Kirsteen Munro decided that a modern apprenticeship
offered the best career path.

Now, having completed her own apprenticeship, Kirsteen would love to see more women follow in her footsteps.

She said “There is no reason why females should be held back in the workplace and Scottish Gas promote equal opportunities, which is why I was so keen to take up a modern apprenticeship.

“We have quite a few females in our department and that number increases each year. I get on well with all my
male colleagues and there is a mutual respect there.

“I’ve worked hard to get where I am and if I ever need any work-related advice, they are always on hand to help.

“There are so many opportunities for females now – especially in our workplace – and I’ve never once felt out of place.”

Paul Chappells/Daily Record

Kirsteen Munro is confident her gender won’t hold her back

As part of her apprenticeship, Kirsteen attended college and also took part in a practical training scheme allowing her to learn key skills while on the job.

But rather than feeling like token girls, she argues that she is part of a growing band of women apprentices ready to pick up the tools of the trades.

She said: “I felt the academic path wasn’t right for me. I wanted a job where I could gain qualifications, learn a trade and get paid at the same time.

“I quickly decided that I wanted to find a role where I could learn on the job and I decided this was the best way forward.”

Kirsteen, 29, from Glasgow , added: “The support I’ve received from colleagues on the shop floor to those helping me at college has helped boost my confidence and proved that I can be part of what has always been viewed as a man’s world.”

“Women can be just as successful as men if they have the right attitude – there’s no reason why your gender should hold you back. Times have changed and there are more opportunities for women now than ever before.”

Bicycles and motorcycles get a 'very limited exception' to red lights, says Oregon Legislature

Changing traffic laws that affects cyclists and motorcyclists often sparks plenty of debate in the Oregon Legislature.  That was not the case with a measure allowing two-wheeled vehicles to go through stoplights that won’t change for them.

On a unanimous vote, the House Wednesday gave final approval to Senate Bill 533 and sent it to Gov. Kate Brown for her signature.  The Senate had earlier also approved the measure with no dissenting votes.

Rep. John Davis, R-Wilsonville, said several other states have passed so-called “dead red” laws that deal with the problem caused when two-wheeled vehicles fail to trigger the detectors that change traffic lights.  The problem, he said, is caused not by a lack of weight but by the use of materials that may not be recognized by the detector.

Under SB 533, bikers would be allowed to proceed through a red light only after it failed to go through one full cycle — and then only if done with caution.  Davis called it a “very, very limited exception” to the normal rules covering red lights.

He said it is a much more conservative law than in Idaho, which allows cyclists to proceed after stopping at a red light if it is safe to do so.  Davis called that a “Beyond Thunderdome” law, a reference to the “Mad Max” movie of the same name.

Davis noted that a new Mad Max movie is hitting theaters and added that it “is not our intent to create a similar situation in Oregon.”

In committee, the measure drew opposition from the Oregon Department of Transportation, which said it raised safety concerns if some road users acted in an unpredictable manner.  However, Davis said “dead red” laws have not appeared to cause safety problems in other states.

Rep. Bill Post, R-Keizer, said that he was riding home one night and had to wait for a long time to get through a traffic light that wasn’t triggered by his motorcycle.  “I hated it,” he said.  “It drives me crazy.”

Pan African Union showcases culture in its first major event

Melanie Calimlim, Staff member

To help share their mission and objectives, the Pan African Union club members hosted their first major event, An Evening with PAU, in the Hospitality Services Food Court Building on May 1st.

“I’m so excited, I’m so ready for it to be over because it’s been such a journey,” said the president of PAU Emily Ajwang, 24.

She said the main goal of the event was to emphasize Pan-Africanism. The PAU is a place for the black community to learn more about their history, to expand their opportunities, and to support each other in order to accomplish their goals.

However, regardless of race, anyone committed to the mission of the PAU is welcomed.

“It was a cultural event with the theme of black pride as the black community need more opportunities to showcase their talents and cultures,” Ajwang said.

The planning of this event began in December and it required collaboration and hard work on everyone’s part.

The PAU members pulled out all the stops, from the makeshift red carpet that welcomed everyone inside, to entertainment from a DJ, a fashion platform and delicious home-cooked food.

The event started with the women’s fashion show. The women were graceful as they walked down the stairs and across the platform. Although the outfits were alluring, the women managed to stay conservative in vibrantly colored and distinctive patterns, with the help of the highly praised Grace Ayoko, who put the ensembles together.

PAU member Anareth Luemba, 23, who was in the fashion show, hopes the club becomes better recognized.

“It would be nice if we integrate people because I feel like not a lot of people know about it,” she said. “Going to our club, you’ll have different views about our race in general. You’ll learn a lead of different things.”

Former DVC student Samuel Ayoko, 21, supplied the men’s fashion. He said the event was a chance to expose people to African American music, food and clothes.

“Being in America, it’s a multicultural community,” he said. “So it’s a cool thing to be able to share that with other people and in a way where people can have fun no matter which culture you come from.”

Business major Tina Saadi, 19, said she loved the energy of the kickoff event.

“Everyone has been really warm and Africans in general have such a high spirit,” she said. “It’s been great to see them and all their friends coming together, expressing themselves, dancing.”

Economics major Elijah Pipersburg, 21, read a story to the audience, “What if There Were No Black People?” It told of the contributions African Americans gave to the world.

Pipersburg read, “I mean you heard I mentioned [invention of] ‘refrigerator,’ without it, you won’t be able to preserve your food. The first successful open heart surgery was performed [Daniel Hale Williams] and that was a breakthrough.”

Despite different backgrounds, everyone became more united as the night went on.

Saadi said, “They put a whole lot of effort into it. I got to meet a lot more people. If I see them now on campus, I’m comfortable enough to say hi.”

Expedia Report: American Drivers Despise Texters, Admit to Speeding

More than anything else, the sight of a “texter” is what really gets U.S. drivers’ blood boiling.

YOU MAY ALSO LIKE

According to the 2015 Road Rage Report — commissioned annually by Expedia and conducted by GfK — 26 percent of 1,000 polled U.S. travelers consider texting the No. 1 aggravation when traversing America’s roads.

Tailgating (13 percent), hogging the left lane (12 percent), crawling (10 percent) and multitasking (seven percent) are also among the most despised driving behaviors.

But drivers’ frustrations aren’t limited to what’s happening inside other cars. According to this spring’s report, backseat driving is the No. 1 in-car aggravation among Americans, with 52 percent of respondents citing the behavior as their top pet peeve.

The second-most annoying in-car stressor is the co-pilot who doesn’t assist with navigation (12 percent), followed by hogging the radio (10 percent), sleeping (eight percent), removing shoes (seven percent) and eating (six percent).

“Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer, and a moment when millions of drivers will take to the road. Now that drivers can book rental cars through Expedia’s updated mobile app, we’ve set out with the Road Rage study to examine what sorts of behavior make travel more pleasurable, and what sorts of behavior should be avoided,” said Expedia.com vice president and general manager John Morrey in a statement.

“The study demonstrates that travelers, whether they’re on the road or in the air, expect – and reward – courtesy and respect from their fellow travelers,” added Morrey.

And despite acknowledging that the aforementioned behaviors warrant frustration, 61 percent and 29 percent of respondents admitted to speeding and following other vehicles too closely respectively.

Interestingly, the report shows that nearly every respondent (97 percent) rated themselves as a careful driver. However, at the same time, respondents concluded that less than one-third (29 percent) of fellow drivers can be considered careful.

But more disconcerting is the fact that 13 percent of respondents said they have felt physically threatened by another driver. What’s more, four percent said they have actually exited their vehicle to confront a fellow driver.

In addition to driving behaviors and sentiments, the report provided insights on how Americans view and use rental cars in 2015. The study revealed that 80 percent of respondents typically use a rental car for leisure purposes, with 76 percent citing price as the No. 1 factor they consider when booking.

Finally, the report shows that 10 percent of respondents said they “strongly or somewhat agree” that they are “more likely to break the law in a rental car than in their own car.”

That said, be safe out there this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend.

Contemporary Menswear: The Insider"s Guide to Independent Men"s Fashion

The essential and inspirational reference to more than fifty international designers, labels, brands, stores, blogs and websites that have shaped independent men’s fashion over the last decade

In the past, menswear and creative fashion were not words that were easily associated with one another. While a rich tradition existed in men’s tailoring, menswear was seen as very much the poor relation to womenswear. Times have changed: menswear, notably that created and produced by independent labels, is a hotbed of creativity; separate fashion weeks devoted to menswear are now held in Paris, London, and Milan; and the menswear scene is hotly discussed, critiqued, and debated in the press and online.

Contemporary Menswear presents in-depth profiles of more than fifty of the designers, labels, brands, stores, websites, and blogs that have shaped and continue to shape menswear in the twenty-first century. From classic heritage labels such as Albam Clothing through to dynamic, new labels such as Tellason (crafted, desirable denim) this is a detailed and insightful guide to an independent menswear scene that has grown to be a respected and highly creative part of global fashion. 500+ illustrations in color

(WOMENSENEWS)– The federal Food and Drug Administration plans a public information campaign later this year to encourage women to participate in clinical trials.

“Women should be aware of the need for them to participate in these trials,” Marsha Henderson, the FDA‘s assistant commissioner for women’s health, said in a recent phone interview.

The agency is also enhancing guidance and training for FDA investigators to try to ensure the inclusion of more diverse populations in drug studies.

It’s a sound idea, but not new.

In 1991, Dr. Bernadine Healy, then director of the National Institutes of Health, and the first woman to hold the post, made an unsettling disclosure. Women who had heart attacks were not getting the same quality of care as men because they often had different symptoms. That raised their odds of being misdiagnosed or improperly treated.

Twenty years later, in 2011, cardiovascular disease in women accounted for about 400,000 deaths, or 51 percent of all deaths in the United States attributable to heart disease. That means more women than men are still dying of heart disease.

For women of color, the impact is even greater. For instance, even though the incidence of breast cancer is lower in African American women than white women, women of color die from breast cancer at a higher rate. The reasons often go back to their access to health care–diagnosis and treatment may be delayed–and because they haven’t been widely included in drug trials.

Drug Trials Exclusion

The reasons for these disparities vary. Women are not routinely in clinical trials and thus treatments can end up being based on how men react to specific drugs, not women. Women of color are also not included in drug trials as often as white women and that can lead to problems in dosing and treatment because they may react differently to drugs based on genetic differences, experts say.

Nakela Cook, a physician and chief of staff in the NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, in April told the 23rd Annual Congress of the Academy of Women’s Health, which was meeting in Washington, D.C., that because women often present symptoms different from men, the “symptoms aren’t recognized.”

That alone, she said, is a key reason to expand drug testing and clinical trials.

The reasons women don’t participate will sound familiar to many: family responsibilities, pregnancy, transportation, child care, elder care. Getting to a lab during working hours is often tough for women, who are more likely to work low-wage jobs with inflexible schedules. Evenings may be difficult because of child care and family obligations.

Testers need to find ways to overcome these barriers and consider everything from the time of day to offering assistance with transportation, Cook said in an interview after her presentation.

There are other troubling health disparities between men and women, and between whites and non-whites, but often the data are not sifted according to those subgroups, leaving medical practitioners with limited information about whether a particular treatment will work for a particular patient who is not a white male.

The FDA, pressed by Congress in 2012, is undertaking a major examination of drug trials and the inclusion of women and minorities in testing. In 2013, with new information about the effect of Ambien, a sleeping pill, the FDA cut in half the dosage recommendation for women, citing next morning impairment and dullness in those who had been using the recommended dosage.

It’s not clear yet how effective the government’s efforts will be.

Slow Progress

Even though women are required by law to be included in medical research, it’s not happening as often as it should, finds a study published in 2014, “Sex Specific Medical Research: Why Women’s Health Can’t Wait,” co-authored by The Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and The Jacobs Institute at George Washington University.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of both women and men in the United States, yet less than one-third of cardiovascular clinical trial subjects are female and less than one-third of cardiovascular clinical trials that include women report outcomes by sex,” the report found.

Lung cancer kills more women than most other cancers considered “women’s cancers,” such as breast, ovarian and uterine cancers. But too often, the 2014 study found, when lung cancer treatments are studied, the studies don’t distinguish between the medical outcomes for men and for women.

The higher incidence of depression in women would suggest that gender specific studies are also needed, but data show that is not occurring. And Alzheimer’s may be more of a woman’s disease than a man’s disease, but the data suggest that the studies believe that is because women live longer than men rather than because of gender differences, the 2014 study said.

All this prompted a bipartisan group of women in Congress, led by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to ask the Government Accountability Office to press for the inclusion of women in clinical trials and led to a policy change at the National Institutes of Health to press for inclusion of more women.

That circles back to the message from NIH’s first female leader more than two decades ago.

Patrol focuses on motorcycle safety and enforcement

COLUMBUS — May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the Patrol would like to remind motorists that there will be an increase in motorcycles on the roadways with the warmer weather and to remind motorcyclists to ride endorsed, trained and sober.

From 2012 – 2014, motorcycle-involved crashes resulted in 440 fatalities and more than 10,749 injuries in the state of Ohio. In 2014, there were 134 motorcycle-related fatal traffic crashes that killed 140 people. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders were 26 times more likely to die in a traffic crash than a passenger car occupant in 2012.
