WSVN — The day started with a Sunday afternoon motorcycle ride, but it ended in blood and broken bones. As Patrick Fraser tells us on tonight’s Out for Justice, the Florida Highway Patrol is asking for your help tonight in finding a reckless driver.

If you know someone who loves to ride motorcycles, they have probably told you there is nothing like it. Mike and Karla were like many who love to hit the road on their bike.

Karla Winslow: “It was a brand-new one, a Harley CVO Street Glide. We enjoyed riding as much as we could.”

Then, three months ago, on Sunday, February 8, Mike and Karla were on I-75 near the Indian Trace exit going to meet friends for lunch.

Karla Winslow: “All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I saw this car out of the corner of my left eye. I didn’t even have time to yell his name. Something hit me on the head, and then I remember absolutely nothing.”

Witnesses told the Florida Highway Patrol the car was a silver BMW 300 series.

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark G. Wysocky: “Traveling westbound at high speed. As the vehicle approached the motorcycle and attempted to pass the motorcycle, it changed lanes, causing the driver of the motorcycle to lose control and overturn.”

FHP Cpl. Baker: “Right here is where the actual bodies were at final rest.”

People stopped their cars to help. As Karla regained consciousness, the badly injured Michael was trying to find her.

Karla Winslow: “I heard Michael’s voice yell, ‘Where’s my wife? Karla, where are you?’ And I yelled back, ‘I’m here.’ That’s the last time I heard his voice.”

Michael slipped into a coma and died in the hospital. Karla suffered several broken bones but is doing better.

Karla Winslow: “I’m alive and that’s the main thing, and I — but Michael’s not.”

And the driver of the silver BMW took off.

Sgt. Wysocky: “The witness said that the BMW did hit his brakes just after changing lanes, so he may have known that he did something. Whether he knew that he hit the vehicle or just caused the vehicle to lose control when he changed lanes is what we have to determine.”

Karla says he slowed down because the driver knew exactly what he had done.

Karla Winslow: “The car was about four inches away from me when I first saw it. I know that he hit us. It’s not even a question; we were hit.”

Patrick Fraser: “Investigators say the BMW may have had some paint on the rear of the car from hitting the bike, or if he barely missed, there may not be any trace of the motorcycle at all, but either way, it doesn’t change what he did. He knew he caused an accident, he took off, and investigators want to talk to him.

Sgt. Wysocky: “We need someone to come forward and contact the Florida Highway Patrol. If they have any information about the crash, or know anything about the crash, to contact us with information that will help our investigators.”

Someone driving a BMW like this swerved and killed a man. Someone who is enjoying their life, maybe watching this right now.

Karla Winslow: “There is a brother, sister, mother, father, neighbor, friend, someone who knows who did this, and I’m just hoping that they can find it in their heart just to come forward.”
