BMW's Half-Year Sales Rise, June Figures Going Down, Recalls to Blame?

BMW

A- A+

Both good and bad news come from the BMW Motorrad camp, as the semester sales reports indicate a growth to date, but a dip as far as the sales for the month of June are concerned.

Overall, BMW Motorrad is doing fine, according to the official figures supplied by the Bavarian manufacturer. In the first 6 months of 2014, BMW supplied 70,978 motorcycles and maxi scooters, a rather steady increase of 9.3% over the 64,941 units which have been sold to end customers in the same period of 2013.

The leader in the BMW sales charts is still the new liquid-cooled R1200GS machine, of which almost 15,000 units have been sold worldwide, accounting for a hefty 21%+ of the total of bikes. Next in line are two boxer models as well, the R1200GS Adventure and the sport-tourer R1200RT, with 9,708 and 7,420 units sold, respectively. The last bike equipped with the air/oil-cooled version of the 1200 boxer engine, the R nineT sold 4,114 units through the end of June, 2104.

However, the worldwide sales for the month of June alone went down by 5.7%, to 11,827 units, compared to the 12,541 bikes and maxi-scooters sold in the same month of the previous year. The German manufacturer elegantly avoided to provide the reasons for the decrease in the number of sold motorbikes, but it’s no secret that the nasty story of the even nastier recall involving the 2014 R1200RT motorcycles equipped with the ESA dynamic suspensions.

Motorcycle sales in the US also went down by 3.4% in June, with 1,327 units sold. The 190 R1200GSs sold in the States helped even out the R-series decline and even record a 7% increase. S-series machines sold 44 percent better, with the HP4 superbike skyrocketing to 58 deliveries, compared to only 22 in June 2013. The US branch of BMW Motorrad sold 8.2% more bikes half-year than in the first semester of 2013.

Given the fact that BMW offered unhappy R1200RT customers the possibility to return their bikes for a full refund, it would be interesting to find out how many opted for this move and how were these bikes accounted for in the overall sales figures…

Name & Shame: FreeBNC

Today’s “Name & Shame” post digs up dirt on FreeBNC, which is a free BNC (bouncer) service for IRC users to stay connected “permanently” to their IRC networks. How IRC bouncers work is not really the point of this article, though. If you want more information on how an IRC bouncer works, you can look at this Wikipedia page.

Copying Text

Around 12 PM (noon), I saw this in #EliteBNC:

12:15 PM Channel ban set for *!*@*.freebnc.in (+b) by @EliteBNC

12:17 PM <@EliteBNC> [ROOMS NOTICE] (from Robby) If people are wondering what that ban is about… look at our website, then look at http://freebnc.in/ …more than 95% COPIED of our website. The IPv6 ranges will be banned when possible from channels as well.

Talking to Robby later, I learned that what was actually copied from EliteBNC was their text on the website. Take a look at EliteBNC’s home page, and then at FreeBNC’s site. See the similarities?

If you don’t feel like looking at either of their websites (and I won’t judge you), here is two screenshots below.

EliteBNC’s website

FreeBNC’s website
Looks like there’s more than just the homepage that was copied:

8:06 PM <@Robby`> IPv6 page also

8:06 PM <@Robby`> though they deleted a lot of the nets

8:07 PM <@Robby`> and the rules page… ugh

Thoughts

What I want to know, is does FreeBNC release how wrong they are right now? I can’t mentally process what these people were thinking when they copied large amounts of text from EliteBNC’s website. Looking up the WHOIS on freebnc.in, it looks like whoever is behind the operation is not in the United States, which would explain why they have already gotten away with this.

People should not intentionally do things (like copy someone’s website) because they know that they can get away with it. Of course, morals are out the window on this one.

What do you guys think about this?

Bike and motorcycles collide

SAND BEACH TOWNSHIP – An accident involving a bicycle and two motorcycles Friday on Schock Road, south of Harbor Beach, caused injuries to four people.

The Huron County Sheriff’s office responded to the incident just before 3 p.m., and found that Ricky A. Christie, 48, of Harbor Beach, had been riding his bicycle northbound on the northbound shoulder of the road and attempted to merge to the southbound lane shoulder as two motorcycles approached. He was struck by the first motorcycle, which was driven by 25-year-old Daniel P. Moses, of Harbor Beach.

The collision caused Christie, Moses and Moses’s passenger, 25-year-old Chelsey K. Priemer also of Harbor Beach, to all be thrown from their vehicles.

A second motorcycle driven by 26-year-old Amanda J. Priemer, of Harbor Beach, initiated heavy braking, causing her also to be thrown from her motorcycle.

All were transported to the Harbor Beach Hospital for treatment, with Amanda Priemer later being transported to a Saginaw area hospital for further treatment.

Other agencies assisting in this incident were the Harbor Beach Police Department, the Harbor Beach Fire Department and Eastern Huron Ambulance.

How Choppers Evolved

Choppers entered being in the 1960′s and 1970′s. They were the next step in bike evolution after the “bobber”. The bobber happened after American soldiers returned house from World War II. While they stayed faithful to the Harley Davidson business, bikers that had offered oversees just weren’t fairly completely satisfied with the equipments the company was generating. These cyclists kept in mind the bikes they had viewed in Europe that were more lightweight and much more amazing. A lot of hade been trained to work with motorcycles and automobiles in the service. They started to get together and talk about renovations.

To make the bike lighter, cyclists started removing or minimizing the fenders. The front fender was often removed completely, while the back fender was made brief good enough to simply secure the guest from mud and water regurgitated by the rear tire. This is where the term bobber originated from. Cyclists remained to make changes or customizing their bikes and ultimately the “chopper” was born. Their initial function was for dirt track racing.

The term chopper originates from the process of chopping. Riders started slicing off any kind of component they felt was unnecessary. This consisted of windshields, front fenders, big fronts lights, crash bars and large seats. The common huge footrests were changed with forward-mounted foot secures. The gas storage tank was made smaller sized. This made the bike lighter.

Next, bikers started raking the front end of their choppers to ensure that the angle of the fork to the ground reduced allowing for a boost in the wheelbase. They also elevated the handlebars and called them affect hangers.

Anything that was believed too large or unnecessary was either made smaller sized or removed. The front tire was made small; the back tire was made fatty tissue. Each rider made the bike he would like to ride.

As constantly, when this rage caught on, enterprising people began creating and creating custom-made bikes to sell to various other riders so they really did not have to do the job themselves. Teeth began to be developed, not just sliced. While this fad decreased for a couple of years, it seems to have actually picked up. Personalized built choppers developed by leading designers are greatly valued and demanded.

The Shovelhead FX Super Glide was one such Harley Davidson design to come from the chopper evolution. Choppers became particularly popular after the film Easy Cyclist, starring Peter Fonda, was released in 1969.

Auto-Autonomy: Cars Are Racing Toward Disruption

The auto industry, for much of the 20th century, represented American ideals. The “Big Three” represented millions employed directly, often in jobs that raised standards of living. The leaders of auto companies came to define modern management, from Alfred Sloan to the Whiz Kids. Cars and culture became intertwined. The suburban lifestyle, from malls to minivans, was enabled by cars.

Through oil shocks, quality imports, labor challenges, urban sprawl, bankruptcies and more, the auto industry has continued to be a massive and essential part of the U.S. economy, and a huge part of growing economies.

That’s what makes the disruption taking foot in automobiles even more fascinating. The rule of thumb about disruption is that you can’t predict it while it is happening, and if you’re the incumbent, you are hearing about disruption at every turn. That’s why it is tricky to assert that the auto industry is being disrupted.

self-driving car

Google

There’s a lot of evidence building that the societal and technological underpinnings of disruption are already in place. And there’s a mounting pile of skepticism from incumbents about new technologies. There’s also the role of government as the agent of resistance employed by those favoring status quo, always under the guise of safety and causation.

Watching the unveiling of the self-driving car at the recent Code Conference offered an opportunity to ponder many signs of change coming together, creating an opportunity to look forward at the changes disrupting the industry and how we get around.

Stepping back from the drama of that onstage demonstration at Code, I see five signs that, when put together, point to a major disruption of the way we think of cars and transportation. These five signs represent the first step in thinking about disruption by identifying changes in the landscape that are structural challenges for all incumbent players.

Sitting in traffic — and then being unable to park in downtown San Francisco — motivated me to write this post.

Urbanization and improvement/acceptability of public transport

All around the U.S. there is a renewed migration to urban centers (this is also an unstoppable force in the developing world). The major coastal cities of New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and more are seeing the population shift back to the urban centers that were shunned as the Boomers settled into the newly created suburbs.

This re-urbanization is accompanied by significant new investment in public transportation within these urban cores. These same cities are spending more on trains, buses and bike lanes than they have in decades. Shared bikes in many cities are making it easy to get from point to point quickly and efficiently.

While the genesis of these projects go back years, the improvements visible today are supporting and accelerating the ability to urbanize. Businesses incentives to locate in urban cores are on the rise. Across the country, the subsidies for the use of public transportation from employees and institutions contribute to the socialization of the use of these resources.

Unbundling in-car features

Retro car vertical

Vladimir Arndt/Shutterstock

It might seem like a small point today, but the locus of innovation in automobile electronics is shifting from hardware to software, and from the car manufacturers to innovative companies building transportation capabilities using mobile platforms. We see the convenience of using maps on a phone with crowdsourced data for road and traffic conditions. We’ve also seen entertainment unbundled, with the ubiquitous tablet now serving as the prime back-seat entertainer. Features that used to be original equipment or add-ons are better, more agile to change, and cost less when offered through modern mobile platforms.

This sign has two disruptive elements. First, it is an economic challenge for auto makers who have spent enormous energy building out business and sales approaches based on car “electronics.” Disruption to this disrupts the economics of auto sales, especially since safety and comfort have been “pulled” into the assumed base price of cars.

Familiarity and personalization of transportation comes from what is on my mobile device — not in the car — making the transition from one vehicle to another more seamless.

Second, from a consumer or owner perspective, the familiarity and personalization of transportation comes from what is on my mobile device, not in the car, making the transition from one vehicle to another much more seamless. LocalMotion (Disclosure: Along with Lyft, it’s an a16z portfolio company; I serve on its board) even unbundles the most basic car functionality of entry and ignition, by using an RFID or other means to access the car. With that come all sorts of features previously dependent on a specific car, from GPS location to repair notification — all on my mobile device.

Energy sources

Approximately half the oil used in the U.S. is consumed by personal vehicles. No matter how fast we find new (and potentially risky) methods to extract oil from the earth, we’re going to run short. I have many memories from my childhood of the 1973 oil embargo and the subsequent gas lines, rationing, and long-term implications of an oil-dependent nation. The U.S. has only twice briefly shaken an addiction to high-consumption vehicles (in the 1970s and between 2006-2008), and most recently, we’ve seen a resurgence in sales of SUVs and trucks to individuals. Ironically, the competitive advantage held by U.S. auto makers, along with the high profits associated with trucks and SUVs, only further serves to cement their potential for disruption and lack of long-term interest in alternative fuels.

The need for our transportation infrastructure to be powered differently is a massive disruptive force to be reckoned with.

At the same time, there are software technologies advancing that can do far more than incrementally improve the design, manufacture and distribution of alternative fuel vehicles. Tesla has become a symbol of what can be done when there is a complete rethinking of how to build and drive a car. Detroit’s reaction has been unsurprising, if not disappointing. Recently, I saw Bob Lutz, the legendary former chairman of General Motors, in an interview, still talking about range anxiety and potential safety problems of exploding batteries. I suppose you can keep being negative about every potential alternative to the direct use of fossil fuels, but doing so without putting forth any credible efforts for alternatives seems to follow the pattern of incumbents facing disruption.

The need for our transportation infrastructure to be powered differently is a massive disruptive force to be reckoned with.

Shared ownership/ridership

Retro car radio

TTphoto/Shutterstock

Owning a car is a big headache. Ironically, it is far less of a headache than it has ever been, relative to reliability and durability. My childhood memory that a trip from New York to Florida required a AAA membership and driving with a fear of a “breakdown” are faint memories. Modern cars, especially those manufactured in Japan and Germany, are insanely high-quality upon delivery (I recall my father keeping a list of defects in our new family car back in the 70′s), and remain high-quality for thousands of miles before any service might be required.

But insurance, gas costs, parking costs, and the incredibly poor investment represented by auto ownership has now become a headache relative to the perceived social status and convenience. A new car loses 20 percent of its value when it is driven off the lot, and for the pride of ownership, you can pay huge out-of-pocket costs beyond purchase that add up to perhaps $300 a month — more, if you pay for parking and tolls. Yet the average car in the U.S. is parked 23 hours a day, on average. It is literally crazy to own your own car.

With urbanization, even if you want to own your own car, you’re not likely to have anywhere to put it. Given all of this, it is hardly shocking that there is a sea change in attitude about car ownership. Owning a car is no longer aspirational, and our nation’s youth are even waiting longer to get a driver’s license than at any previous time. From ZipCar or Cars2Go to Uber and Lyft, shared ownership and shared ridership are at new levels of convenience and cost.

A short time from now, actually driving a car will seem as out of place as the in-office wet bar seen on “Mad Men.”

The unbundling of features of cars such as keys, personalized maps, entertainment mean that I can walk up to a car, tap in, and drive off comfortably. I can also summon an equally convenient ride with precise GPS location. These benefits are extended to commercial fleets of vehicles, which suffer these same inefficiencies on a microeconomic scale. You can see shared fleets of cars using sharing technology that keeps cars in use and reduces the number of cars on the road — better for the owners, better for the roads, and better all around.

Needless to say, fewer cars is a massive disruption to the auto industry. We are also familiar that, with disruption, it is often the case that things appear at their very best before they turn for the worse, so the near-term rise in car sales (particularly SUVs and trucks) is poised to be a last major purchase cycle before folks who grew up delaying their licenses, using car- and ride sharing, and looking to their phones for transportation, are the leaders in business and communities deciding how to allocate transportation resources.

Driving technology leading to driverless

Retro tailfin black

TTphoto/Shutterstock

When Google showed off a driverless car, designed from the road up to be self-driving, there was a combination of excitement, followed by a lot of commentary about how far off the practical application will be. Even if the driverless car is 15 or more years away, it is inevitable. The signs discussed above only make the driverless car more inevitable, and each is itself an ingredient along the way.

Even before we see a completely redesigned car, we will see the incremental steps — just as we see in tech all the time — there will be broad adoption of driver-assist technologies in existing cars. For many, particularly incumbents, these will have the appearance of meeting the needs of the marketplace. That’s how innovation happens. The dividends of the fundamental work done by Google and other companies on the maps, sensors, control systems and more, are leading to innovations such as the Subaru Eyesight and Mercedes Intelligent Drive — precursors to full autonomy.

On the commercial side, we’re already seeing things like the Daimler autonomous truck. It would not be crazy to see commercial transport move even more quickly to autonomous or hybrid “driving,” given the long hauls on major highways and the immense savings in fuel that could come from consistent driving patterns.

Once there is autonomy, it is not hard to imagine what seems like a utopian view of transportation, where you walk up to any nearby car, perhaps one you summoned via a mobile device, if needed — or even better, one that predicts that you are in need of transportation based on your routine or schedule.

Some individuals might own personal cars and contribute them as a shared resource to defray costs. Companies will be in the business of offering shared cars, and governments might create Divvy-Cars modeled after the urban bikes we have today. Car sharing also benefits enormously from autonomous driving. You can choose to be a car owner and have a vehicle at your disposal, benefiting from the savings that come from sharing with a broader set of folks, while never having to worry about the skill of the driver who takes advantage of your shared asset.

You enter the car, having had credentials verified. Your destination is known, and off you go. Not only does traffic flow more smoothly, simply because more cars are more fully utilized and able to more predictably and algorithmically traverse the roads, but you are far safer, as autonomous cars are free of driver distraction, emotion and slow reflexes. To think that humans are better than computers are at hurling thousands of pounds of metal at 60 mph seems counterintuitive at best. It will almost certainly be the case that a short time from now, actually driving a car will seem as out of place as the in-office wet bar seen on “Mad Men.”

Rethinking end-to-end

Retro car tailfin 2

gh19/Shutterstock

Conservatively speaking, it took about 30 years for car ownership to drive the broad changes across society — starting from the economics of owning a car (and the jobs that were created making them), to building 50,000 miles of highways (that took 35 years and $500 billion), to the development of the suburban lifestyle, and finally the rise in incomes making for one-driver/one-car (actually about 0.8 cars per licensed driver in the U.S., having peaked in 2008).

It could take that long until we are at the next technology peak — one described by uniformly available shared transportation, autonomous vehicles, and a societal infrastructure and lifestyle to support these changes. But these changes are coming. There’s an inevitability when you put together the signs of change — society is evolving.

Incumbents will take near-term approaches that have the effect of incrementally improving where we are in transportation. That’s not a negative, but it is a reality. Cars will add improved safety tools to alert drivers who are swerving on roads. Cities will employ sensors and monitoring systems to provide more information about congestion. Technology will continue to squeeze more miles out of burning fossil fuels.

We shouldn’t forget that car enthusiasts are like any tech enthusiasts, and they will continue to invest in the depth of knowledge and enjoy the experiences they have come to love (the way many Boomers enjoyed tuning up and tinkering with cars, much to my personal disinterest).

That’s what happens with disruption — while it is happening, it seems like it is going slowly. Then all of a sudden things are different.

There’s also the likelihood that incumbents will resist technological change. We will see leaders talk about “range anxiety” of alternatively powered vehicles. We will see opponents of shared assets continue to talk about the risks to public safety. We’ll see the status quo forces of interest groups resist the infrastructure changes and spending required (just as those same forces opposed the freeways of the era we currently benefit from).

This is part of societal change — no one is acting in bad faith, and the give and take of making progress over these time periods and levels of investment cannot happen without differing viewpoints arriving at change in their own ways and at their own pace.

At each step in technology evolution, the installed base often denies the mounting evidence of improvements in the next generation. Recall that many programmers resisted protect mode, virtual memory, graphical interface and tablets. Fly-by-wire commercial aircraft were introduced by Airbus and initially played down by Boeing until they were all-in with the 777. We see drivers who have resisted automatic transmission, GPS, and even cruise control, and we will see incumbents of all types resisting the full redesign of cars.

Perhaps the common thread in technology innovation is that it takes a new company free of constraints to truly redefine a product.

Retro car rearview

Barry Blackburn/Shutterstock

Cars didn’t exist when the 20th century started. With Moore’s law enabling a faster pace of change, it would not be surprising to see the world look as just as dramatically different in half the time. In historical terms, the car-ification of the U.S. took a blink of an eye. The 2.0 version has the potential to change even faster.

And as you get your mind wrapped around the changes to your family car and local taxi service, start to consider how these exact changes will really impact public transportation, roads, airplanes, trains and more.

That’s what happens with disruption — while it is happening, it seems like it is going slowly. Then all of a sudden things are different.

New Zealand Men Step Up During Men's Health Week

New Zealand Men Step Up During Men’s Health Week

More than 30,000 New Zealand men filled out an online “What’s Your Score” Men’s Health Week survey – a three-fold increase on last year. In addition Green Cross Health offered more than double the number of free blood pressure checks at pharmacies while thousands more took advantage of free health checks throughout the month of June.

During Men’s Health Week 2014 New Zealand men were encouraged to step through a series of online questions about their health designed to promote positive action, and to take advantage of free Men’s Health Pit Stop Checks at one of the more than 300 participating pharmacies nationwide.

Brenda Whiteman from Unichem Levin said the Pit Stop Checks looked at blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI, zinc testing and pharmacists provided advice on life style changes and natural health alternatives. “At times during June we were seeing 20 men each day for a 30 minute consultation,” she said.

Motorcyclist clocked at over 100 mph, say Clinton Twp. Police

Clinton Township police car

CLINTON TWP. — A motorcyclist faces multiple charges following a high-speed chase in which the bike topped 100 mph. Police gave the following account.

On Saturday, July 5, around 2 p.m., Patrolman David Formalarie was traveling south on Route 629 when he received a radio report from another Clinton Township officer that two motorcycles had just been seen traveling 57 mph in a 35 mph zone on Route 629.

As he approached the Molasses Hill Road intersection, Formalarie saw the two motorcycles traveling north on Route 629. One of them, a 2014 Kawasaki ZX10R, then passed another vehicle on a double-yellow line.

Formalarie turned his patrol vehicle around and tried to stop the two motorcycles. In the area of Sand Hill Road, Formalarie activated his emergency lights and siren as the two motorcycles accelerated to a high rate of speed in an attempt to elude him.

Formalarie pursued the fleeing motorcycles at a high rate of speed down Sand Hill Road and onto Route 22, where he saw the first motorcycle pull into the Honda dealership at the intersection with Petticoat Lane.

Formalarie continued after the Kawasaki, which was now traveling over 100 miles per hour. The Kawasaki turned onto Route 621 and then onto Route 629, where Formalarie stopped his pursuit. He turned off his emergency lights and siren but soon came upon the fleeing motorcycle, which had slowed down considerably, near the overpass on Cherry Street in Lebanon Borough.

Formalarie then arrested driver Thierry Fortier, 55, of Roseland and charged him with eluding, reckless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, and improper passing. Fortier was then released and the motorcycle was towed away.

Setting her sights on a 'man's world'

The Sundaytimes Sri Lanka

Setting her sights on a ‘man’s world’

Holding a Masters in Project Management Engineering and winning the 2014 Zonta award for Engineering, all at 25, Shanika Cabraal says she has always felt at home at quarries and construction sites

View(s):

As a tiny tot, Shanika Cabraal trotted behind her father when he went to construction sites. Hardly a place for a child, yet it didn’t seem to bother the young Shanika that her friends preferred monkey bars and ball pits to her construction site visits with her engineer father.

Young achiever: Shanika with her award at the Zonta awards night

It was an unexpected change of heart before her A/Ls that made Shanika give up her dream of studying medicine for a new one in engineering. That spontaneous move proved to be the right one for the young engineer who at 25, holds a Master of Engineering in Project Management and won 2014’s Zonta award for Engineering, also being the youngest winner for this year.

Growing up with two brothers and tagging along with her engineer father on his site visits, Shanika has always felt right at home at quarries and construction sites. Sitting down to what she admits candidly is her first interview the young engineer is vivacious and confident; two qualities which have helped her immensely in a field of work known for being stereotypically male dominated.

Having grown up in Sri Lanka, Shanika is a product of St. Bridget’s Convent and the Colombo International School. Having been a “quiet child”, she laughingly described her childhood fear of being left alone which she had to face upto when she crossed the waters to Australia to further her education. “When I left I was all alone,” she explained, but it really helped boost her confidence and independence, she felt.

Seven years later, she’s back home with a wealth of work experience behind her. Currently working at CML-MTD Construction Ltd. Shanika was also a part of Vicroads, Australia. One of the 30 graduates selected for the programme, it was a big break for the young engineer and her first taste of a career in engineering.

It was at Vicroads that she found herself working on a 180 million dollar project- the only female in her office. “Only 20% of engineers were female,” she explained referring to the field of engineering she was involved in whereas areas such as civil engineering have an equal number of men and women working alongside each other. But rather than a challenge the experience proved to be a learning curve and a chance to understand different perspectives. “I never felt like I needed any protection,” she shrugs matter-of-factly. Perhaps it was because she grew up a tomboy, or maybe it was her positive, direct approach to anything.

Travelling, she says, is the best part of her work, as it takes her from Mannar to Hmbantota. Meeting people and getting to know them has always been of interest to Shanika. “I’ll talk to everyone,” she says, “whether they are labourers at the sites or directors of companies” without sticking mainly to business. She’ll talk to them about their families and how they are, feeling that working together is obviously easier when people are comfortable around you. Her forthright manner Shanika owes to her time spent abroad which gave her the confidence to be more open about her opinions and ideas regardless of whether they are right or wrong.

Since coming back she’s had her plate full, with her work at CML-MTD and being a part of the Young Constructors Forum (YCF). “Initially I was a bit scared,” she admits as coming back to live in the island after seven years proved to be harder than she expected. Walking into her first meeting, she recalls being quiet, very unlike her, not because she was once again the only girl but because they were organising cricket matches. “I don’t know anything about cricket,” she laughs, “but I helped organise a lot of matches.”

When she’s not on site visits or seated at sports grounds with the YCF Shanika finds herself in the kitchen. “I love baking,” she says, happily merging designing and engineering with her cooking. Her latest project, a 3D figure cake for her nephew currently occupies her time. Shanika who is open to the idea of one day having her own family but never at the expense of her job enjoys the company of children and feels that the problem many women deal with is the feeling of being judged for trying to keep their careers while juggling their family live.

Growing up Shanika was not a typical feminist, nor did she think herself capable of extraordinary achievements. It was halfway through her degree that she realized she wanted to do more than just pass and strove to go for a first class honours. “I had a female manager in Australia,” she reminisces, a lady who really made an impact on her way of thinking. “She told me that a lot of people would try to change me, make me do things a certain way. But she believed in my potential.”

Her night at the Zonta awards opened her eyes to a different outlook on working women – “Looking at those really accomplished women gives you something to work for,” she says.
