KTM-owned Husqvarna will produce motorcycles from Bajaj's Chakan plant from 2017

Austrian motorcycle manufacturer Husqvarna Motorcycles is all set to re-enter the on-road motorcycle segment, having unveiled the Vitpilen and Svartpilen concepts at the 2015 EICMA in Milan in November 2015. According to latest reports, the production-spec Vitpilen and Svartpilen will be manufactured at Bajaj’s Chakan plant in Maharashtra from next year.

“Two years in a rapidly-evolving market is a long time,” Business Standard quoted Amit Nandi, senior vice-president (pro biking), Bajaj Auto, as saying, as he hinted at a possible start of production of Husqvarna bikes in 2017 from India. The Austria-based motorcycle-maker will likely use India as a production hub for its upcoming volume-selling motorcycles.

Bajaj Autos’ Chakan plant in Pune currently serves as the global production hub for the KTM Duke and RC range of motorcycles. Hence, it would be easier for KTM to procure engines and components from India. The Husqvarna and KTM motorcycles are expected share platforms. The new Husqvarna motorcycles will be powered by 125cc and 390cc engines, which in all probability will be the current KTM engines developed jointly with Bajaj Auto.

KTM acquired Husqvarna AG from the BMW Group in 2013 and renamed it Husqvarna Motorcycles GmbH. The company has not talked of any plans to enter the Indian market any time soon.

Looking ahead to Oscars fashion

LOS ANGELES – The Oscars are fast approaching and fashion

commentators are gearing up for the array of red carpet frocks

that will be beamed around the world. In what is seen as the

Hollywood fashion event of the year, every piece of clothing and

accessories will be analysed.

Actor Tony Burton, ex-boxer who played Apollo Creed trainer,

dies

Tony Burton, a former boxer who portrayed Apollo Creed’s

trainer in six of the “Rocky” movies, has died at age 78 after a

long illness, according to media reports on Friday. Burton’s

sister said he died on Thursday in California after being

hospitalized repeatedly in the past year but never receiving an

official diagnosis, according to MLive.com, a local news website

in Burton’s home state of Michigan.

Philippines may ban pop singer Madonna for disrespect to

American singer Madonna may face a ban in the Philippines

for disrespecting its flag in her concerts this week in the

capital Manila, a domestic broadcaster said on Friday, citing a

historical commission official. The 57-year-old entertainer is

on a world tour to promote her “Rebel Heart” album, and did

sold-out shows on Wednesday and Thursday.

In Indonesia, an Oscar-nominated film reopens old wounds

Indonesia’s first film production to be nominated for an

Oscar is at once a source of national pride and of shame for the

world’s third-largest democracy. “The Look of Silence”

centers on one of the worst massacres since World War Two, when

at least 500,000 people died in violence that raged after

then-general Suharto and the military took power following an

abortive coup in 1965. A million or more people were jailed,

suspected of being communists.

International crowd of animators vie for Oscar

LOS ANGELES – The nominees for this year’s Animated

Feature Film category at Sunday’s Academy Awards span

international borders with contenders representing the United

States, United Kingdom, Brazil and Japan. Disney Pixar’s

“Inside Out” and the adult-themed stop motion animation

“Anomalisa” are from the United States while the UK is

represented with “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.

Foreign film Oscar favorites zoom in on stark worlds

Despite all their differences, harrowing Holocaust drama

“Son of Saul” and the coming-of-age tale “Mustang,” the two

frontrunners for the best foreign language film Oscar, both

place their characters in a claustrophobic world of stark

choices. For “Son of Saul” director László Nemes and “Mustang”

director Deniz Gamze Ergüven, a win at the Oscars on Sunday

would mark an especially significant breakthrough, since these

are the first full-length films of their careers.

Prada offers ‘see now, buy now’ bags straight off the Milan

women next fall at Milan Fashion Week and joined in on the “see

selected outlets from Friday. Miuccia Prada, regarded as a

trailblazer by fashionistas, mixed prints with luxurious fabrics

to create glamorous, colorful, layered outfits, for her

collection.

Oscar nominees discuss awards season perils

The Academy Awards take place on Sunday (February 28) and

they mark the end of what is commonly described as awards

season. This season traditionally starts with the Golden Globe

nominations in early December and then continues with other

nomination announcements before awards start being handed out.

New pop at Emporio Armani, practical wardrobe from Etro in

Milan

The digital age was at the forefront of the Emporio Armani

fashion show in Milan on Friday with Italian designer Giorgio

Armani dotting his womenswear fall line with bold colorful

shapes. In a mainly black collection with flashes of bright

color, the 81-year old Armani softened day suits with looser

silhouettes in an apparent nod to the 1980s, reinforced by

multi-colored jumpers and plenty of sequins.

It is a man’s world (again) in the Oscars best picture race

From abandoned astronauts to testosterone-fueled Wall Street

traders, dogged reporters and frontiersmen bent on revenge, it

is a man’s world in the best picture race at Sunday’s Oscars

with women again taking supporting roles. The Oscars have not

seen a female-led film win best picture in a decade, since

“Million Dollar Baby” starring Hillary Swank won the top

accolade in 2005.

From runways to retail, springtime fashion blooms

Spring is just around the corner and the fashion trends could not be brighter. The colors for spring are all shades of grey and greens, bright oranges and shiny metallics.

According to Rachel Zoe’s website, the major fashion trends include silk blouses, ruffles, tiers, and exposed shoulders. Zoe also describes how skinny, slim high-waisted fit trousers which we have loved for years are out and slouchy, wide-leg and hip-hugging trousers are back in style.

Bell bottom jeans are officially back and can be found in retailers like Madewell owned by J.Crew corporate.

One of the main styles found on the catwalk are Victorian-inspired. Lace and silk fabrics complete the romantic feel designers are striving for this season.

Designer Alexander McQueen’s runway show for this spring was filled with lace gowns and blouses in soft ivory and light pinks in blush tones.

Calvin Klein’s spring 2016 runway show was all about daytime attire inspired by lingerie. Silk slip dresses with lace detailing. This look was also present on the runways of Alexander Wang, Balenciaga and Givenchy.

Another prominent trend is Spanish-inspired ruffles and tiers. Designer Oscar de la Renta and Gucci’s spring 2016 runway shows presented these trends in bright tangerine orange and rich reds.

In men’s fashion, different shades of grey, green and baggy trousers are prominent.

Also, men’s shorts are getting shorter so say goodbye to baggy, long shorts and say hello to the short hemline of the 1970s.

J.Crew has also brought these trends and more, but in a relaxed casual everyday style. The J.Crew spring line is full of different shades of greens and bright oranges as well as gingham and striped patterns.

This fashion company is known for their love of stripes especially nautical navy and white striped sweaters and tops and there are no shortage of them this season.

According to their website, they are joining the trend of wide-leg trouser with their new Teddie styled trousers which are slightly cropped with a cool kicky leg and polished front pockets that are finished with hidden zipper.

This spring will be filled with new trends to try and choose from. If spring fever was not already hard to avoid, these trends will make it near impossible.

Men's Health Thursday: 100 Women Reveal 10 Ways Men Can Be Great In Bed

Culled From Elitedaily, written by Alexia LaFata

It’s a fact of life that when a woman gets into bed with a man, she is prepared for at least one of these three things to happen: 1. She will feel self-conscious in some way; 2. the experience will be short and kind of sh*tty; and 3. she will not finish. (She will not even come close).

When I first explained this depressing reality to a guy a few weeks ago, he was baffled. Completely baffled. Sex had been amazing for him since his senior prom! How is it possible, he wondered, that it’s rare for a woman to experience sex that’s even mediocre?

In addition to appearing shocked, he also seemed to feel sort of bad. Like he, as both an individual and as a collective representation of all dudes, had failed. So after realizing how genuinely confused this well-intentioned guy was, I decided to ask women what guys can do to actually make sex better for us.

I surveyed 100 women, ages 19 to 50, about what makes a guy good in bed. I provided the women with a list of 15 actions that guys can do and told them to rank each action as either “not important,” “somewhat important” or “very important” in determining if he’s good in bed or not. Then, at the end of the survey, I asked if they had anything else to add to the list that I may have missed.

And BOY, did the ladies come through. So guys, hopefully these results will help you all kill it in the sack.

Engage in foreplay

foreplay

STOP SKIPPING THIS STEP. A whopping 86 percent of women said it’s very important that you engage in foreplay, which includes making out, licking our boobs and fingering us.

It can also include kissing/caressing other non-sexual parts of our body, such as our neck, finger and forehead, as 90 percent of women said it’s somewhat or very important that you do this.

Did I tell you to stop skipping this step yet? Yes? Well, I’m going to repeat it anyway. STOP SKIPPING THIS STEP.

Go down on us

oral sex

A lesbian friend of mine once told me that she couldn’t believe how infrequently men go down on women. And she’s right. You guys just don’t do it. Which is unfortunate, because we actually want you to: 82 percent of women said it’s somewhat or very important that you go down on us.

If you’re unsure if she wants it, just see what happens when you head down south. If she stops you, then you’ll have your answer. But according to these results, she’ll probably want it.

Be in good physical shape

fit

90 percent of women said it’s somewhat or very important that you have enough stamina and energy to not get tired too easily in bed. (Don’t worry about going MULTIPLE rounds, though — only 32 percent of women said that’s very important).

When I say “good physical shape,” by the way, I don’t mean you need to have a six-pack. I just mean you don’t have to get up for a water break every five minutes. In fact, a distinctly thin guy with great arms whom I used to date couldn’t have sex for longer than five minutes without doing just that. And let me tell you: It was not sexy.

The good news here is that you don’t have to worry about finishing too quickly. Only 33 percent of women said it’s very important that you’re able to withhold your orgasm for a long time. So if you finish in two minutes but still have enough energy to continue hooking up, you’re good.

Take control and spice things up

Couple having pillow fight in bed

We want you to dominate us and keep the experience interesting: 96 percent of women said it’s somewhat or very important that you take control in bed, and 86 percent of women said it’s somewhat or very important that you have sex with us in positions that aren’t missionary.

In addition to varying up the positions, we want you to vary up the tempo/rhythm, too. In the open-ended responses, several women said they don’t want to be jackhammered the whole time (because duh, and also ow). One woman suggested you throw in “some shallow thrusts.”

Lightly roughhouse us

control

In your quest to take control, feel free to be a little rough with us. 75 percent of women this is somewhat to very important, so things like hair-pulling, mild slapping and the like is OK.

Note that I said lightly, guys. Don’t bruise us, please.

PG-level dirty talk us

sleepover

Be careful with dirty talk. Over half of women (53 percent) said it’s not important that you tell us you want to f*ck our wet pussy, or whatever. So maybe err on the side of caution and don’t say things like that.

However, if you DO want to dirty talk, 74 percent of women think it’s somewhat important or very important that you say PG-level things like “you’re so hot.” Try that instead.

Make us orgasm

woman-orgasm

73 percent of women said it’s very important that you make us orgasm. This is a given, but it’s worth repeating.

But know when to stop trying if an orgasm is just not going to happen

couch sex

Vaginas are fickle. They’re not as easy to work with as dicks are. Which means even if you do every single thing on this list and you do it right, an orgasm may not happen anyway.

This is crucial for you guys to realize, as 89 percent of women said it’s somewhat or very important that you know when to stop trying to make us orgasm if it’s just not going to happen. Because sometimes — while we really do appreciate the effort! — if you’re trying too hard down there, it starts to feel too sensitive and hurt. And then you will go from “good in bed” to “get me the f*ck out of this bed as soon as possible.”

Cuddle after

cuddle

A few women in their open-ended responses said that the “post-sex interaction” is vital. We want you to cuddle with us after. Cliché, yes, but true.

One woman stressed the importance of also knowing when to leave us alone when the cuddling is over. So be in sync with that as well.

Listen to feedback

couple-kiss-love-romance-Favim.com-144578

84 percent of women said it’s very important that you adjust your actions according to our feedback, whether that feedback is verbal or non-verbal (via our physical responses or our body language). This is so crucial that SEVERAL of the open-ended responses at the end of the survey repeated the importance of being open to feedback.

Whenever I’ve tried to give feedback to guys before, they’ve taken it like an insult. But this needs to end. Don’t be an egotistical jerk to a woman who tries to tell you what she’s into. Her feedback is for YOUR benefit, too.

Because remember that blowjob you’ve been wanting? It’s coming soon, my friend. It’s coming.

NEW DELHI: In a top level change, Japanese auto major Honda Motor Co has appointed Yoichiro Ueno as new President and CEO of its Indian operations with effect from April 1, 2016.

“Honda Motor Co has appointed Ueno as the new President & CEO of Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) with effect from April 1, 2016, consequent to the management changes announced by the Honda Motor Company Board of Directors today,” the auto maker said in a statement.

HCIL sells six models in the country — compact car Brio, compact sedan Amaze, mid-sized sedan City, premium hatchback Jazz, multi-purpose vehicle Mobilio and premium sports utility vehicle CR-V.

Ueno comes to India from Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd where he served as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director since January 2011.

Uber Rolls Out Motorcycle Taxi Service in Bangkok

HONG KONG —

Uber has introduced a motorcycle taxi service in the congested streets of Bangkok.

The move is an effort to counter what rival ride-hailing apps are doing — competitor Grab already offers a motorcycle option in the Thai capital, called GrabBike.

It isn’t Uber’s first go at motorcycles. In 2012, the company launched a moto-taxi option in Paris for a few weeks as a short-term experiment. It hasn’t tried another motorcycle feature until the Bangkok one, which it has designed for cities in developing countries like Thailand, according to spokesman Karun Arya.

“Two-wheel transportation is a form of mobility for millions and millions of people,” he said.

Motorbike rides can now be requested like any other Uber taxi on the app in three central Bangkok neighborhoods, and the driver will even show up with a helmet for the passenger.

“Motorcycles are part of the commuting culture in Thailand,” Douglas Ma, Uber’s head of Asia expansion, said in a statement. He suggested the new service would “create tens of thousands of flexible work opportunities for Thais.”

Fares start at 10 baht (28 U.S. cents), and cost an additional 3.50 baht for each kilometer and 0.85 baht per minute for every ride — cheaper than the car service.

Bangkok residents reported varying degrees of success at finding available motorcycle taxis in the city after the feature launched Wednesday, ranging from a few minutes away to none at all. Uber declined to comment on how many motorcycles are available through the app.

The startup said it has plans to roll out the motorcycle service in other cities in the near future, but it wouldn’t specify which ones.

The taxi-hailing app is in over a dozen Southeast Asian locations, including Bali, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore.

Uber launched in Thailand in 2014 and has hit a couple of bumps along the way. In December 2014, the country’s transportation director said that the company’s cards had not been properly registered, that some drivers had improper licenses and that the rates were not approved.

The company also ceased operations in Phuket, a popular vacation destination, early last year.

Older motorcycle riders at risk

Of the eight motorcycle-related deaths on the roads this year, the majority have involved male riders over the age of 40.

Both ACC and New Zealand Police are disappointed by the deaths and are desperately urging all motorcyclists and drivers to do more to keep themselves and others safe on the road.

ACC and NZ Police are calling on motorcyclists and drivers to do more to keep themselves safe on the roads. Photo: Bruce Barnard

Motorcycles make up less than five per cent of all vehicles on the road, but 15 per cent of all fatal crashes involve motorcycle riders, while motorcyclists now make up 10 per cent of all road users injured.

ACC senior motorcycle injury prevention programme manager Carey Griffiths says it has been a disappointing start to the year for motorcyclists with the number of deaths so far.

“With 53 motorcyclists dying on our roads last year, the highest number since 1998, we hope that this year does not carry on the way it has started.

“Eight motorcyclists have died on New Zealand roads since the beginning of this year. The disturbing feature of these deaths is that the majority involve male riders all over the age of 40.”

One fatal crash involved a 54-year-old who was on a learner’s licence, while another 54-year-old who was also on a learner’s licence was caught travelling at 162km/h.

Carey says these crashes highlight a real issue that police and ACC are dealing with.

“It concerns older male riders who are overly confident and often riding bikes that are beyond their experience and capabilities. Nearly three quarters of fatal crashes occur on the open road where a loss of control can be deadly.”

Carey is encouraging all motorcyclists to check out ACC’s Ride Forever programme which provides all riders with the opportunity to improve their riding skills, knowledge and capabilities.

As a long term rider himself, he knows there are some risks riders can’t control, but improving your skills is something within everyone’s control and critical to improving the odds of staying alive.

“Ride Forever courses offer a chance to brush up on the perishable skills needed as riders and we encourage everyone who rides to get themselves a regular check-up on their abilities just as we’d get a warrant of fitness for our bike.

“It’s too easy to fall into the trap of practising your own mistakes for years and thinking ‘she’ll be right’.”

Superintendent Steve Greally says the warmer temperatures and fine weather sees more bikes on road and police would like motorcyclists and drivers to remain alert.

The national road policing manger believes drivers can do their part to help keep motorcyclists safe by remaining alert when behind the wheel and keeping an eye out for bikers.

“A common comment from car and truck drivers about motorcyclists is that they just didn’t see the motorcyclist. Motorcyclists also need to be proactive in keeping safe.” says Steve.

A trap for many older riders jumping back on their bikes is that many modern motorcycles are extremely fast and powerful.

Steve says if you are a new rider, or returning to motorcycling after a long absence, buy or use a bike that matches your skills and abilities until these improve.

“The Ride Forever training programmes are great for those riders looking to improve their skills and keep themselves safe on the road,” says Steve.

We've entered the next phase of the men's fashion revolution

In the first phase of the men’s fashion revolution in the United States, men started using online retailers to dress better.

Now in the next phase, they’re not just using online retailers to create a shopping experience they can stand, they’re actually starting to enjoy the process of dressing and shopping online.

“We’ve seen this massive shift,” Vishaal Melwani, CEO and founder of Combatant Gentlemen, told Business Insider.

His brand is directed at the young kids, the second-time suit buyers and first-time job interviewers.

“We’re really excited to be teachers,” he added.

Melwani’s customers are reading content about everything from how to tie a scarf to what to wear to a beach wedding. They’re asking good questions, and they’re even taking a few risks.

“For such a long time in the early days of the brand it was all about mono-chromatic suits,” he said. “Now, we’re really getting to do some crazy stuff.”

“Crazy,” of course, means pocket squares and patterned suits, brighter colors, and accessories. In response, retailers like Melwani are figuring out ways to conform classic looks to modern lifestyles.

For example, Combatant Gentlemen decided to make a suit that’s 98% your classic wool, 2% an elastine that makes it really easy to move in. They call it “The Endurance suit.”

So go ahead and do parkour on your way to work, or whatever.

Taste, get some

Younger guys are starting to pick up on what they like and what they don’t. This is the foundation of something called “taste” – taste is a good thing.

Another behavior men are picking up – they’re learning how to shop online intelligently.

“They [customers] definitely are getting smarter, asking a lot more questions and looking for deals. We get a lot of traffic that pushes in from discount websites too, meaning they leave our site, go on retailmenot.com or promopro.com then come back to our site using a discount,” Philip Sblendorio, co-founder of men’s accessory retailer, SprezzaBox, told Business Insider.

And men don’t just want their clothes and shoes – they want it yesterday. Guys expect the same kind of service from small retailers as they do from huge companies like Amazon, and the smaller guys are racing to keep up.

I had a dude in Dubai call us on Monday morning (he ordered on Sunday) wondering where his shoes were,” Ben Earley, co-founder of men’s shoe brand Paul Evans told Business Insider via email.

“I said ‘You ordered half a world away, yesterday, on a Sunday.’ He said ‘Sunday isn’t a weekend in Dubai, and my Amazon order from yesterday got here already."”

See, all of this takes effort, and effort used to be something no real man put in his clothing. What the data is showing online men’s retailers, however, is that this is changing.

Most men aren’t completely ready to show that their hobby is filling their closet, though.

“I think it’s more of a private thing,” Melwani said. “[Guys think] ‘no one’s going to judge me. My boys aren’t here. My girlfriend’s not here. No judgment."”

Definitely not. If anything, guys, we were judging you before you figured out the right way to wear a sweater under a blazer.

1 in 3 men affected by premature ejaculation

The 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy once said: “History is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing the future. Try to hold fast is to be swept aside.”

Indeed “the past is rushing the future”, and at the blink of an eye, the festivities of the Christmas, New Year and the Lunar Chinese New Year have ended. We are all ushered into 2016 and will face the challenges that have been predicted for this Year of the Monkey.

Many of us are embracing ourselves with the possibilities of higher costs of living and potential economic downturns, perhaps by tightening the purse-strings and being cautious in expenditure. However, others may face the hardship that is not so predictable, such as in the alteration of the state of health, with advancing age.

The American comedian, dancer and singer, Eddie Cantor, once said: “Slow down and enjoy life. It is not only the scenery you miss by going too fast- you also miss the sense of where you are going and why”.

This week we tackle the challenges of a reader facing the problems of “inability to slow down” in sex with advancing age.

Dear Dr G,

My name is Albert and I am 54 years old.

I face a rather strange problem in the bedroom in the last three years, and really hope you can help me.

My wife and I have been married for the last 25 years and we have a “normal” sex life.

Sadly, I started having the problems of inability to hold back my ejaculation in the recent years.

I read up in the Internet and wonder is this is the condition called premature ejaculation. I often thought it is a young man’s disease, and I am rather curious why this is happening to me at this age.

Am I am getting this problem because I am too active or inactive in my sex life in the past few years?

The early ejaculation is really bothering my wife and I. Is there any treatment available? Are there risks involved?

Are there any other reasons why I get premature ejaculation at this age?

Am I not too old to be too fast?

Looking forward to your answers.

Regards,

Albert

According to the International Society of Sexual Medicine (ISSM), premature ejaculation (PE) is a medical condition characterised by a man having the inability to control his ejaculation, resulting in short latency time of intercourse (around one minute) and causing significant bothersome or impairment of the quality of life.

Many clinicians and sexual health physicians argue Premature Ejaculation is the commonest form of sexual dysfunction, compared to other conditions such as erectile dysfunction (ED).

The prevalence studies conducted in many countries, including Asian nations revealed that PE affects up to one in three men. Studies in the past indicate PE affects men from the incidence of their first sexual encounter and persists throughout their lives.

Such condition is believed to be due to the deficiency in the neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin. Hence, this may explain why men get life-long PE or primary premature ejaculation.

In recent years, clinicians and scientists begin to investigate another group of sufferers who face the problems of early ejaculation in the advancing age, typically in the 50s. So, there is no such thing as too old to be too fast.

Researchers in the field of sexual health belief the etiology of such acquired PE (or secondary PE) is very different from the life-long PE.

Recent data had revealed the association of men with acquired PE with the possibility of prostate diseases, hormonal changes or even erectile dysfunctions. Many men may feel guilty about over indulgence (or even under-utilisation) in sex as the cause of sexual dysfunction. There is no real evidence to support the hypothesis.

The link between the onset of the inflammation of the prostate resulted in PE has been scrutinised in recent years. Although the exact mechanism of the conditions is largely unknown, many speculate that the local irritation of the pelvic organ may trigger the onset of early ejaculation. Other areas of research in this field include the association of men with hyperthyroidism and acquired PE. Again, the causative or effect of such link is hotly debated, and this has opened up further research avenues for better understanding of many sexual dysfunctional conditions.

Although the etiology and causative factors of the acquired PE remains a subject of scientific scrutiny, the treatment of both primary and secondary premature remains essentially the same.

Occasionally, the treatment of the underlying problems such as prostatitis or hyperthyroidism may resolve the issues. Otherwise, the pharmaceutical intervention to enhance the levels of serotonin in the brain also plays a vital role in the treatment of men with early ejaculations in the advancing years.

Patients who are treated with medications such as Depoxetine can benefit from better control and prolonged ejaculatory latency interval during sexual intimacy. Of course, with such improvement, the quality of life of the couples will enhance accordingly.

The American poet, playwright and social activist, Langston Hughes once said: “Hold fast to dreams, for it dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.”

Dr G’s advice is, “Old bird that flies fast may not necessary be a good thing. Hold fast to treatment when faced with problems, as life should be like a carefree bird flying high and slow!”

Roger Penske's Nearly Forgotten American F1 Team

Most Popular

Roger Penske is one of the most famous names in American motorsports, but you don’t generally think “F1” when you hear his name. Most of Team Penske’s success has come in Indy Car, NASCAR, Can-Am and American sports car racing, but in the mid-1970s Penske tried his hands at Formula 1. His team remains the last American team to win an F1 Grand Prix, the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix.

Interestingly, the F1 effort is but only a footnote on Team Penske’s own website. Roger Penske only fielded F1 cars for two Grands Prix in 1971 and from 1974 to 1976, never replicating the success of his Indy and sports cars. On the eve of Haas F1’s entry into the sport, it’s worth revisiting this nearly forgotten team.

The most surprising thing about Penske’s F1 efforts isn’t its successes, but the fact that it wasn’t all that successful overall. Both American teams and drivers have always had a difficult time in F1, but if any American team could break into F1’s elite, European club, it’d be a team led by Roger Penske. In just a few years after Team Penske made its debut at the 1966 Daytona 24 Hour, it became an American racing powerhouse.

Carl Haas, Roger Penske, a mechanic, and Lola T-192 driver Mark Donohue await start of the Questor Grand Prix in which Formula One cars competed with Formula A cars on March 28, 1971 in Ontario, California.

“If you’re going to have a private entrant, Roger Penske was your boy,” said legendary driver David Hobbs talking about a Ferrari 512M he raced for Penske, in a Petrolicious video. Penske’s teams were funded well enough and ran professionally enough to compete with factory-backed efforts. F1 is expensive and challenging, but if there was any American to conquer it in the 1970s, it was Roger Penske.

Mark Donohue drives Roger Penske’s McLaren M19A 1/Ford Cosworth en-route to third place in the Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park near Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, on September 19, 1971.

Penske’s first foray into F1 began at the tail end of the 1971 season. For the two final races, the Canadian Grand Prix and the U.S. Grand Prix, Penske sponsored a McLaren, painting it in the iconic blue and yellow Penske/Sunoco livery. Mark Donohue–who in many ways was Penske’s right-hand man–made his F1 debut at Canada, snagging a third place finish. At the U.S. Grand Prix, Penske intended to have both Donohue and Hobbs drive, but a scheduling conflict kept Donohue out of the race.

Hobbs managed a 10th place finish at the U.S. Grand Prix and Roger Penske announced his intention to join F1 competition in earnest. In 1973, Penske purchased a small race car manufacturer in the UK that built Formula 5000. With just six employees at his new facility, Penske made Heinz Hofer–who previously ran Penske’s Porsche Can-Am team–F1 director and directed his new shop to build a new car for the 1974 Candian Grand Prix.

Penske PC1

After just a few months of development, the Penske PC1 was complete and sent overseas to race in the Candian and U.S. Grands Prix, just as Penske had in 1971. Donohue had retired from racing and was working Penske’s team manager and engineer. Feeling restless, he helped test the PC1 and convinced Penske to let him race in the 1974 Canadian and U.S. Grand Prix.

Donohue finished in a respectable 12th place in Canda, but was forced to drop out of Watkins Glen due to a failed rear suspension after qualifiying in 14th place, according to MotorSport Magazine. Still, Donohue felt good about Penske’s F1 debut, so he decided to run the complete 1975 season with the PC1.

The Geoff Ferris-designed PC1 was powered by the venerable Cosworth DFV V8, but it couldn’t hope to be competive in 1975. Despite Penske’s big budget, the team remained small too.

“We had only five people going to the races that year,” said Karl Kainhofer, one of Penske’s lead mechanics, speaking to MotorSport Magazine. “There was Mark, Heinz, and three of us working on the car. That was it. The whole F1 team was five guys. Geoff Ferris came to some races, but he worked mostly at the shop.”

Donohue’s impressive driving skill was outweighed by the PC1’s lackluster performance, forcing him to retire from five races. His best result in the PC1 was at the Swedish Grand Prix, where he finished in 5th. For the British Grand Prix, Penske and the boss of sponsor First National City Bank decied to replace the PC1 with a March-Ford 751. Donohue placed 5th at Silverstone, but tradgedy struck two races later.

At the Austrian Grand Prix, Donohue crashed badly in qualifiying and suffered a concussion. He regained conciousness after crashing, but fell unconcious once again at the hospital. An emergecny operation to relive pressure on his brain was unsuccessful and he died from his injuries at age 38.

Team Penske sat out the rest of the 1975 season, returning for the final race at Watkins Glen with Irish driver John Watson and a new car, the PC3. Watson qualified in 12th place with the PC3, but mechanical issues forced him to drive the PC1 and start at the back of the pack.

John Watson in the Penske PC3 at the first United States Grand Prix West held on March 28, 1976 in Long Beach, California.

Penske signed Watson for the full 1976 season who drove the PC3 for the first six races, before switching to a new car, the PC4, for the rest of the season. The PC4’s first race in Sweden wasn’t very successful, but Penske showed up at the French Grand Prix with a modified PC4 and finally had a truly competive car.

Watson finished third at both the French and British Grands Prix and got Penske’s only F1 win in Austria, the same place where Donohue passed away just a year earlier.

After the triumph in Austria, Watson drove his way to a seventh place finish in the Driver’s Championship, giving Penske fifth in the constructors championship. Things were looking up for Penske’s F1 efforts, but they couldn’t manage to secure sponsorship for 1977 and Roger Penske decided to focus more on NASCAR and Indycar. Penske’s UK shop built a long line of successful Indycars, well into the 1990s.

Penske sold the PC4 to a couple of privateers who raced in a handful of 1977 Grands Prix to no notable success.

One gets the distinct impression that Roger Penske didn’t care nearly as much about F1 as he did his American racing programs. Reflecting on the history of Penske’s F1 team asks a number of “what ifs?”

What if Penske didn’t develop his own car and buy a McLaren like he did in 1971. What if Mark Donohue lived to drive the superior PC3 and PC4? What if Penske spent more on F1 and hired a larger team?

We’ll never know, but it’s interesting to reflect on the eve of an American return to F1, thanks to Gene Haas. Watson’s victory in Austria was the last time an American team ever won a F1 Grand Prix: Perhaps Haas could take away that accolade.
