On Friday, January 9, 2015 at approximately 2100 hours the Broussard Police Department responded to a major crash at the intersection of E. Main St (LA 182) and S. Girouard Road involving two motorcycles and a vehicle. Upon officer’s arrival they observed a 2006 Volkswagon Bug disabled in the intersection and one motorcycle in the roadway then a second motorcycle off the roadway. Both drivers of the motorcycles had been ejected and were laying a short distance away from each motorcycle.
Through the investigation it was determined that the driver of the Volkswagon Bug (Jacob Romero, 21 YOA, of Breaux Bridge, LA) was traveling eastbound on E. Main St.(LA 182) and was approaching the intersection of S. Girouard Rd when the passenger stated to turn suddenly, as Romero turned left he struck the two motorcycles that were traveling westbound on E. Main St. He stated he didn’t see the motorcycles. The driver of the first motorcycle (2006 Harley Davidson); Scott Bonin, 34 YOA, of New Iberia, LA was ejected and came to rest in the grassy area near the motorcycle. Bonin, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to a local hospital initially with major injuries, still talking to emergency personnel, but he later died as a result of his injuries at the hospital. The driver of the second motorcycle (1997 Harley Davidson) Ryan Maturin, 33 YOA of New Iberia, LA was also ejected and came to rest in the roadway just past his motorcycle. Maturin was wearing a helmet and was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Romero was not injured and was wearing his seatbelt.
Romero was cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic when turning left at an intersection.
Toxicology results are pending to determine alcohol usage if any.
General Motors Co. is expected Monday at the North American International Auto Show to unveil an electric vehicle concept that gets 200 miles of electric range — a vehicle that could challenge upstart Tesla Motors Inc. — according to two sources familiar with the automaker’s plans.
The concept car is named the Chevrolet Bolt and would get 200 miles or more of electric range and would be sold in all 50 states, according to a person briefed on the plans who asked not to be identified because the plans have not been made public. GM executives have talked about developing a 200-mile electric vehicle for nearly two years, but never confirmed plans to show it or what it would be named.
The new Chevrolet Bolt is expected to retail for less than half the Tesla Model S — around $30,000 — and about what Tesla’s future, lower-priced car is set to cost.
The new electric vehicle could be a game-changer for Chevrolet and GM — and the industry — and help demonstrate the company as an innovator in electric vehicles; it’s a segment GM has been working on for two decades. It also could give GM an answer to competitor Tesla’s Model S, which gets about 265 miles of electric range.
GM spokesman Terry Rhadigan wouldn’t confirm the report Friday, saying the automaker wouldn’t comment on what he called speculation, but did not deny the report.
With gas prices low, GM’s introduction of a new electric vehicle might not be ideal. But a company official says by proceeding, it shows GM is committed to electric vehicles and knows that gas prices will again rise.
In August, GM applied for a U.S. trademark for the name Chevrolet Bolt for a new automobile, government records say.
GM executive Doug Parks told reporters at an event in Warren in September 2013 that GM was working on an electric car that could get 200 miles on a single charge for about $30,000.
Former GM CEO Dan Akerson in March 2013 said GM was working on a 200-mile range electric car.
GM executives believe 200 miles of electric range is enough to convince drivers not to be worried about “range anxiety” — or running out of power before having a chance to recharge.
In 2013, GM formed a special team to study Tesla. “Listen. Like it or not, they think big,” then GM vice chairman Steve Girsky told The Detroit News in 2013. “Big in terms of range, big in terms of speed.”
Tesla’s Model S costs at least $70,000. Tesla has said it is working on a lower-cost EV with a 200-mile range it hopes to release as early as late 2016.
Chevrolet will hold a news conference Monday morning at the Detroit auto show where it has said it will reveal the second-generation Chevrolet Volt. GM has said the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will have more range than the 38 miles it can travel on with an electric battery before a backup engine takes over, allowing the vehicle to travel a total of about 380 miles.
GM CEO Mary Barra is expected to unveil the Bolt at the Chevy press conference.
Chevrolet currently sells a Spark EV that is certified by the Environmental Protection Agency with 82 miles of electric range. The Spark EV is sold only in California and Oregon.
But GM’s timing to unveil a new electric vehicle is less than ideal with gas prices plunging below $2 in much of the country — and demand for more expensive EVs and small cars falling. But by the time the new EV goes into production, gas prices may be much higher.
Barra said this week that the company’s strategy isn’t changing despite low gas prices. “But over the long term, it doesn’t change our strategy at all. We’ve been working for several years now to make our vehicles from that perspective very efficient; have several new powertrains either out or on their way that are going to be industry-leading from a fuel-efficiency perspective,” Barra said. “We are 100 percent committed to driving efficiency across the portfolio. All segments will to do that. So it doesn’t change it.”
Investors and analysts at GM’s Global Business Conference in October were shown photos of the “BEV2,” which one Wall Street analyst said appeared to be a new electric vehicle.
Where the vehicle would be built — if it’s brought to production — is not immediately clear. But Barra in October affirmed Michigan as the “global engineering base for vehicle electrification.” Since 2009, GM has invested $1.82 billion in Michigan related to electrification and the Volt.
This past November, GM announced $200 million in new investment at its Orion Assembly Plant and Pontiac Metal Center to help prepare for a future vehicle. The company would not say what the vehicle is or when it would come, but it’s believed to be in addition to the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano small cars that are built at the plant. Some people close to the company believe the vehicle slated for Orion could be a new battery-electric.
And in April, GM confirmed plans to invest $449 million in its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant and Brownstown Township battery assembly facility to build the next generation Volt. The company said then that improvements at Detroit-Hamtramck also will support two other cars. In September, GM said it would build the new Cadillac CT6 large luxury car at the plant in 2015.
Sources then believed the other car may be the Buick LaCrosse or an all-electric Volt.
Gerald Johnson, then GM’s vice president of North American manufacturing, said the investment would include $384 million at Detroit-Hamtramck and $65 million at its Brownstown Township battery assembly facility to expand GM’s lithium-ion battery production and future battery systems.
According to analysts and some GM employee profiles, the Chevrolet Bolt, known as the “BEV2″ internally, is due out by the 2017 model year.
In July, Reuters reported that South Korean battery firm LG Chem planned to supply a major automaker in 2016 with lithium-ion batteries for a new electric car getting 200 miles of range or more.
The Bolt comes eight years after GM introduced the Chevrolet Volt — a stylish plug-in hybrid — at the Detroit show. The vehicle captured much of the attention and became a symbol of GM’s technological efforts.
Volt sales haven’t reached expectations set by former CEO Dan Akerson: He wanted production to hit 60,000 a year by 2012 and GM at one point set a sales goal of 45,000 in 2012. Total U.S. sales since its debut have surpassed 73,000, but 2014 sales of 18,805 fell 18.6 percent from the year before. The all-electric Nissan Leaf, meanwhile, had 30,200 sales last year in the U.S., up 33.6 percent from 2013.
But the first-generation car for GM also likely wasn’t profitable, and pricing around $40,000 kept some people away from dealerships. GM in 2013 cut the price by $5,000 to boost sales.

You never forget your first.
Donna Karan was mine.
I am referring to my first fashion week experience, of course.
It was February 2004 and I was about six months deep in to my post-college journalism career. I was an editorial intern at Men’s Health magazine at the time and had to drive in to Manhattan from their headquarters outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania, because a good friend and mentor needed a last-minute plus one for a work dinner. I remember changing in a parking garage right outside the Holland Tunnel into the dressiest thing I owned: a strapless, fully-sequined, little black dress my mom bought me at Dillard’s for a sorority function. The shoes (and I am still ashamed, even now) were not a pair of fantastic “going out” stilettos (you know, the kind that can make a grown woman look like a baby giraffe learning to walk). Instead, I selected an entirely weather-inappropriate pair of strappy, slip-on kitten heel sandals with thin belt buckle straps. Not only were they a bad idea, they were ugly. In my defense, I had just moved from a college town in Florida where flip flops were not only handed out at orientation, but also acceptable at most events through graduation, your wedding, and retirement.
Anyhow, the friend’s “work dinner” ended up being an “intimate charity dinner” (by fashion standards, that means fewer than 50 people) hosted by InStyle magazine at Karan’s Upper West Side apartment. The zen-like loft was buzzing with ludicrously charming and impressive people like Kelly Ripa and Demi Moore, breaking bread and complimenting Donna on the Francis Bacon painting in her entryway and the views from her wraparound terrace. And then there was me—wine in hand, tumbling down the steps to the first floor.
Yep. I fell down a staircase.
My stylistically-challenged fashion debut ended with me in a puddle of Pinot Grigio at the foot of an iconic designer’s (carpeted!) stairs. Luckily, society photographer Patrick McMullan was somewhere else, distracted by Demi not eating something.
I nearly died. Death by kitten heel—and shame.
But nonetheless I was sold. I knew I wanted to be an invited guest at that table. And since then (over a decade, wow!), I’ve made a legitimate career out of playing dress-up with humans.
And now I’m inviting you to be my plus one.
For the next month, I’ll be in Europe for the fall/winter 2015 men’s collections. It’s a new fashion first, and a trip I’ll be taking bi-annually (always in January and June) to be an ambassador of fashion for not only Bloomberg, but you, too.
London Fashion Week starts today, followed by the tradeshow Pitti Uomo, then Milan Fashion Week, and the circus culminates with Paris Fashion Week at the end of the month. These are the fashion weeks where designers like Giorgio Armani, Dunhill, Zegna, and Dior will unveil their new seasonal collections for men—and where I will get inspired as to what trends and fashion moments to bring back to you.
Check in with me here daily and expect plenty of slideshows and reviews, plus real-world interpretations of what’s coming down the runway, from both me and my team of influencers. Reach out on Twitter and Instagram at @nixcruz with your fashion week questions or comments, or via good ol’ e-mail here: nscrews@bloomberg.net.
Now I have a plane to catch, so more on what we have planned and what I am excited about, below.

The Basics
Now only in it’s sixth season, London is the jumping off point for the twice-a-year spectacle now known within the industry as Fashion Month. Literally, it’s a nearly three-week circuit of runway shows, presentations, and schmoozing (including the most vital of the cross-cultural life skills: double-cheek air kissing). When Burberry returned to the British capital just three seasons ago (after years showing in Milan), they became the hometown heroes—it helped lead the charge to put London in the top tier of menswear style cities.
What am I looking forward to personally? Besides my stay at The London EDITION, you mean? I can’t wait for dinner at the Ham Yard Hotel with the Burberry team after their show on the last night. Professionally, I’m definitely looking forward to the launch of MR PORTER’s Kingsman collection (ALL CAPS is a thing now with British luxury brands). It’s a collaboration between the high-end online retailer, film director Matthew Vaughn, and costume director Arianne Phillips, who created all the looks seen on Colin Firth and co. in the forthcoming film Kingsman: The Secret Service (out Feb. 13). Phillips used some of the UK’s most praised heritage brands, like Mackintosh for coats, George Cleverley for shoes, and (my favorite) Turnbull and Asser for shirting. I’m also excited to see collections by a couple notable first-timers: Aquascutum returns to the show schedule with a new head of design, Coach had their first-ever men’s runway show this morning, and John Galliano is showing his first couture collection for Maison Martin Margiela
Our Coverage
We have a great UK-based street photographer, Andreea Bodgan (Instagram: @andreea_bogdan), snapping street style in front of London’s ever-booming hotel scene (expect unassuming locals mixed with the pea cocking fashion enthusiasts). Also look for a photo essay featuring some of the city’s most stylish and dynamic hotel lobbies by another local photographer, Zoë Timmers (@zobolondon). Her iPhone-only photography will also be featured daily on our Instagram (@BloombergPursuits) with the hashtag #lobbiesoflondon.

The Basics
Most people associate Pitti Uomo with street style photography of impeccably dressed Italian men (usually sitting on a wall outside the Fortezza da Basso, cigarette in one hand, iPhone in the other). But the twice-yearly tradeshow in Florence, Italy does actually have a legitimate professional purpose—it’s a place of business, a setting for building relations between throngs of international retailers, editors and menswear enthusiasts. It also promotes the best of Italian fashion and manufacturing, along with supporting new talent from around the globe. But the street style is pretty great.
Each year Pitti Immagine (the organizer of Pitti) picks a guest designer to host for a runway show. This year, Italian label Marni (which just turned 20 last year) is in the spotlight. They also invited the younger, luxury-streetwear brand Hood by Air as a special guest to host a showcase of their avant-garde collection. Last, but certainly not least: the Brunello Cucinelli dinner is always the invite of the season. This year it is at Palazzo Corsini and sure to be spectacular.
Our Coverage
We’ve commissioned photographer Margarita Chiavara (Instagram: @margheritachi) to capture the classic street style of Florence’s most dapper older men. Properly inspired, Bloomberg’s associate market editor, Moti “The Metro Man” Ankari, will show you how to capture the “Pitti Look”—patterns on patterns, plus expert tailoring—stateside with a how-to styling guide featuring clothes from Manhattan’s Suit Supply.

The Basics
This is where a lot of the usual suspects show, the designers we’ve come to know as the kings of luxury: Armani (Giorgio and Emporio), Versace and even American heavyweight Calvin Klein. But in growing years, it’s also become a platform to support young talent as well.
The runway shows in Milan are always a special experience, but so are the smaller-scale presentations by some of Italy’s finest accessory (or accessory-heavy) brands. I’m really excited to see what’s new with Valextra, Bally, Trussardi and Tod’s. Plus, I’m hoping for a Ansel Elgort sighting at the Prada show, as he was just announced as one of the faces of their spring campaign. And then there’s the possibility of Justin Bieber (a.k.a. the new Marky Mark). But if neither of them show up, there will surely be a Jonas brother appearance (because they love a front row moment, so much so that I’m convinced that they would show up for the opening of an envelope if there was a cameraman nearby to document it).
Our Coverage
We will be sharing some of our favorite looks and trends from the shows, daily, plus showing men outside some of Milan’s most frequented and favored cafes. We’ll explore both what they are wearing and drinking.

The Basics
Paris closes the gentleman’s catwalk season with some of the most buzzed about (and sometimes controversial) names in menswear: Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent, Kim Jones for Louis Vuitton, Rick Owens and Alexandre Mattiussi for AMI (a personal favorite).
See designer list above. Plus: Thom Browne for good measure (slash free theater) and Galliano’s first menswear collection for Maison Martin Margiela.
Our Coverage
We take to the streets to show off the fashions away from the runways, exploring some of the artistic enclaves and up-and-coming neighborhoods.

The new year has begun, which brings with it a clean slate and many exciting opportunities. A new year also means laws that recently went into effect on Jan. 1. One of my 2015 New Year’s resolutions is to keep you more informed about what is happening in the legislature, so I wanted to provide you with some information about some of the changes that will be taking place.
Effective Jan. 1, there are multiple laws that impact Hoosier motorists. One new law, of which you might have heard, affects individuals who drive scooters, mo-peds or motorcycles as a means of transportation. This bill defines scooters, mo-peds and motorcycles into two classes: Class A or Class B.
To drive a Class A vehicle, which is anything over 50 cubic centimeters, you are required to pass a motorcycle examination and have a valid driver’s license, insurance, registration and license plate. For Class B cycles, which include a lower-powered mo-ped or scooter, the law requires a state ID, along with a motor driven cycle endorsement, registration and license plate. However, Class B does not require the driver to have insurance. This law will help keep motorists safe and hold operators of motor driven cycles accountable.
To further protect Hoosier motorists, we passed additional legislation intending to deter motorists from driving without insurance. According to the Insurance Research Council, Indiana is among the top 10 states for uninsured motorists, which is why it was so important for us to address this issue.
These new laws are not the only changes we made that affect Hoosier motorists. In the beginning of July, House Enrolled Act 1080 went into effect, which allows motorcyclists to proceed through a red light under certain circumstances.
Because of their light weight, motorcycles were not always detected by the traffic signal and therefore, had to wait long periods of time. This law gives motorcyclists a safe and legal method to proceed through the left turn lane if they have been waiting longer than two minutes and no other vehicles are crossing the intersection.
The new motor laws discussed above are currently in effect and may impact your driving habits today. I want our community and motorists to be aware of these changes so that Hoosier families can continue to travel safely on our roadways.
Several other laws, falling under numerous categories, went in to effect Jan. 1 as well. If you are interested in learning more about these new laws or any legislation that was passed in the 2014 legislative session, visit iga.in.gov/legislative/2014/bills/.
A new year also means a new legislative session, and I look forward to moving Indiana forward in critical areas impacting our state. Some of those areas include: the biennial budget, education, public safety and ethics. I encourage you to contact my office by email with your feedback at h82@iga.in.gov.
This will provide me with guidance as I work with my colleagues to address the issues impacting our community.
I appreciate your time and look forward to serving you this session.

When you’ve chosen “Money” as a nickname, it’s unlikely you’re going to be shy when showing off wealth. But Floyd Mayweather has taken flaunting to a whole new level on social media recently and, naturally, Manny Pacquiao wasn’t too impressed.
Mayweather posted the following picture on Twitter which shows him standing in front of a fleet of super-cars as well as his private jet:
According to Hamish Mackay of the Mail Online, the cars alone—which include two £1.5 million Bugatti Veyrons—are worth a staggering £5.45 million. But when you consider, according to Forbes (h/t Mackay’s piece) Mayweather earned £66.1 million in 2014, it is little surprise he has quite the collection.
Amid all this brash flashiness, it’s easy to forget Money remains the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, and he’s being perpetually encouraged by Pacquiao to put that status to the test. Indeed, Manny posted a comparatively modest picture on his Instagram account and implored the American to stop showing off and talk boxing:

The prospects of a superfight taking place have reportedly been given a timely boost, too. According to Jeff Powell of the Mail Online, Golden Boy promoter Oscar de la Hoya has reached out to his Top Rank rival Bob Arum in an attempt to make nice, and now the pair look set to schedule a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto for the spring.
Chris Hyde/Getty Images
Arum and De La Hoya have reportedly made peace.
According to Powell, the hope is that this peacemaking will eventually pave the way for a showdown between Money and Manny. De La Hoya—who has been the facilitating promoter for Mayweather’s recent bouts—would be set for more of a windfall should his man Amir Khan tackle the undefeated American, but he’s admitted it’s about time Mayweather and Pacquiao squared off.
“As a boxing fan first and foremost I understand completely that Floyd versus Manny is the fight all of us most want to see,” said De La Hoya, per Powell’s piece. “It has to happen soon, for the good of boxing.”

De La Hoya has admitted he wants to see the fight happen.
Pacquiao has been unrelenting in his desire to fight Mayweather and, as 2014 became 2015, the Filipino sensation again underlined his willingness to step into the ring with Money:
The ball will drop at midnight to usher in 2015. @FloydMayweather let’s not drop the ball on fighting each other next year! #LetsMakeFistory
Encouragingly for fight fans, Mayweather himself showed some initiative to make the bout happen toward the back end of last year after calling out Pacquiao in an interview with Showtime (h/t Dan Rafael of ESPN.com). With the rival promoters making peace, the superfight is starting to become an increasingly tantalising proposition.

Could Pacquiao end Mayweather’s undefeated streak this year?
Will the fight happen in 2015?
Will the fight happen in 2015?
Yes
59.5%
No
40.5%
It’s vital the fight happens this year, though. Each man is an icon in his own right and both command the gravitas to make this the highest grossing bout in history. But already, both Mayweather and Pacquiao are arguably a little past their peak. If negotiations were to draw on much longer, it may not be the spectacle it could and should be.
With promoters getting along and Manny unashamed in his desire for the fight to happen, the decision ultimately looks as though it’s going to rest with Mayweather. If he’s got the bottle to match his unfathomable fortune, then 2015 could well be the year that this longstanding grudge is finally settled.
Former Health Minister Edwin Poots’ ban on gay men giving blood in Northern Ireland was influenced by his religious beliefs, the High Court heard today.
Lawyers for a homosexual man claimed Assembly comments by the Democratic Unionist MLA show he wrongly allowed his Christian morals to impact on his stance.
They are now seeking a ruling that Mr Poots displayed apparent bias in maintaining the lifetime prohibition on gay donations.
Even though a judge has already held that the ban is irrational, he reached no conclusion on allegations that the decision was prejudiced by religious views.
Prior to departing from office Mr Poots launched an appeal against the verdict. British Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is also contesting the ruling.
But the gay man who brought the original challenge, identified only as JR65, still wants a finding of apparent bias to be made.
Before the appeal can be heard the case has been referred back to Mr Justice Treacy to make a determination on that point.
The gay blood ban, put in place during the 1980s AIDS threat, was lifted in England, Scotland and Wales in November 2011.
It was replaced by new rules which allow blood from men whose last sexual contact with another man was more than a year ago.
But Mr Poots maintained the prohibition in Northern Ireland on the basis of ensuring public safety.
In October 2013 Mr Justice Treacy ruled that his position on donations from men who have had sex with men deviated from the rest of the UK.
He found the decision was irrational and declared Mr Poots in breach of the ministerial code by failing to take the issue before the Stormont Executive.
Counsel for the former Minister has consistently rejected claims that his position may have been influenced by religious views.
The decision was based solely on health grounds, it was stressed.
But JR65’s legal team now want to be allowed to introduce remarks Mr Poots made in the Assembly while allegedly talking about the case.
He is recorded as saying: “There is a continual battering of Christian principles, and I have to say this – shame on the courts, for going down the route of constantly attacking Christian principles, Christian ethics and Christian morals, on which this society was based and which have given us a very good foundation.”
David Scoffield QC, for JR65, argued that the comments clearly show a link between the gay blood ban and Mr Poots religious convictions.
“If the Minister’s decision was nothing to do with morality and simply to do with public safety then the court’s decision on that would have nothing to do with religion or morality, but simply the evidence and rationality of the Minister’s approach,” the barrister submitted.
Mr Justice Treacy was also referred to a news report on Mr Poots’ contribution to a debate on gay men giving blood back in 2001.
In it the Lagan Valley MLA was said to have attacked the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission for saying the ban on homosexuals giving blood could be discriminatory.
He was quoted as claiming it was a human right for those receiving donations to know they are getting “clean blood” uncontaminated by the HIV virus.
Mr Scoffield further contended that Mr Poots maintained the ban against the advice of his officials and then tried to “conceal” the fact an actual decision had been taken. “A fair-minded observer would conclude there is a real possibility the decision was infected by bias,” he insisted.
Margaret Gray, responding for the former Minister, claimed there was no justification for making a finding of apparent bias.
She said his “clean blood” remarks were consistent with his position based on available evidence and ensuring the highest possible levels of public health protection in Northern Ireland.
Holding religious views cannot, on its own, be enough to establish suspicions of prejudice, she added.
“The respondent’s position remains that the decision was made purely on health grounds,” she told the court.
“It might be consistent with earlier expressed views the Minister had, or might be consistent with some of the tenets of his religious convictions. But that does not justify a finding that there was apparent bias in the decision making on the part of the Minister.”
Following submissions Mr Justice Treacy reserved judgment in the case.

Born into poverty in Achill, Nancy Corrigan worked as a model to fund secret flying lessons before going on to set a world flying record. Richard Fitzpatrick takes a look at this extraordinary woman
Nancy Corrigan was a rare bird. She was born on Achill Island, Co Mayo in 1912. Her father, who was described as a “railway servant” in the 1911 census, died in a rail accident when she was a toddler. Her eldest sister left school at 10 years of age to help raise the family, who, bit by bit, left the island to immigrate to Cleveland, Ohio.
When Corrigan arrived in Cleveland in 1929 it was the sixth largest city in the United States and booming. She got a job as a “nurse-girl” to a rich family. Unbeknownst to her employers and her mother and sisters, she spent her savings as a nanny on flying lessons. They only found out about her flying bug when she broke a world solo flying record in 1932 after only 4.45 hours of training, a feat that made the front pages.
“It is unusual for a girl to handle a plane as quickly as Miss Corrigan,” the Cleveland press wrote. It was the start of an illustrious career in the skies, which she financed by moving to New York to work as a catwalk model for the famous Powers modelling agency.
Bernadette Masterson has produced and narrated a documentary about Corrigan that will be screened on TG4 next week (JAN 6). Masterson is a first cousin (once removed) of Corrigan’s, and grew up in the same village, but knew little about her as a child beyond the fact that they had a relative they referred to as “The Flyer”. The elongated cottage where Corrigan grew up, and where her mother was born, was Masterson’s hen house growing up. What strikes Masterson about Corrigan is her confidence.
“I know what it’s like to grow up in Owenduff and I know that you’re encouraged to be good at school and all the rest of it, but the extent of her ambition and determination. Where did that come from? Her sister said she had the ambition to fly from when she was a little girl; that she pointed at an aeroplane and said, ‘I want to do that.’
“The difference between the paradigm of people in the west of Ireland versus people in Cleveland, Ohio, and how you could shift from one worldview into another when, for example, in 1927 the bishops were getting together in Maynooth and saying a woman’s place was in the home, women shouldn’t have anything to do with fashion and people shouldn’t be going out to the dancehalls. Yet she transmuted from that worldview to Cleveland where the sky was the limit, literally and metaphorically.”
Despite the can-do attitude in the air in America, Corrigan had to overcome a lot of nasty discrimination. Aviation, which was in the middle of its golden age, was a man’s game at the time. In the 1929 “Powder Puff Derby”, the world’s first all-women air race, one of the contestant’s flying wires disintegrated in flight, almost causing her death.
“They investigated and found someone had poured sulphuric acid on them,” says Kim Jones, an aviation historian. “Others had their gasoline tainted with sugar or another additive. There was a lot of resentment, kind of like today with women combat pilots.”
The planes she piloted in the 1930s were rickety machines made up of a wooden frame, glue and cotton cloth. During the Second World War, Corrigan trained US fighter pilots. In 1948, “the raven-haired ex-model” made headlines for her part in the 1948 Kendall Trophy, a famous air race, which involved five laps around a 15-mile course.
Spectators looked on overhead at the drama as the planes vied for position at about 350 miles an hour. Corrigan was leading until another pilot cut across her. She was unsighted – sitting in a glass canopy in a plane without mirrors – but managed to avoid a collision by reacting in time.Corrigan was a noted instructor.
During six years as head of St Stephen’s College in Columbia, Missouri, she had the rare distinction of overseeing 600 women graduate their flight programme without a single failed test. She went on to become one of only two women with a multi-engine, commercial-rating pilot’s licence in the 1950s. She retired to Florida and died of a heart attack in 1983.
“Her focus was probably the greatest thing about her,” says Jones.
“Despite the obstacles, the least of which were economic, she persevered. Even in the ’50s, she was flying corporate planes, which was nearly unheard of. You had a bunch of chauvinistic businessmen – you know, we’ve all watched Mad Men on TV – but here’s this woman and they’re putting their lives into her hands to fly them around the country.
“She showed a lot of chutzpah. The thing about Nancy is that she was very understated. She wasn’t an Amelia Earhart. She wasn’t too big into tooting her own horn, as some of the other women pilots were. It’s made her a standout in that she didn’t stand out.”
Nancy Corrigan Spéirbhean Acla will be screened tomorrow, Tuesday, on TG4 at 9.30pm. For more information, visit:www.tg4.ie
Two Baltimore police officers crashed their motorcycles on a ramp at the New Jersey Turnpike Sunday as they returned in a motorcade from the funeral of a New York City Police officer who was killed last month, authorities said.
The officers, who were not identified, were taken to a hospital with minor injuries after the crash at about 3:49 p.m. on a ramp from the Goethals Bridge to the turnpike, according to a New Jersey State Police spokeswoman.
Baltimore’s Fraternal Order of Police tweeted Sunday night that the two officers’ injuries were nonfatal. New Jersey authorities provided few additional details on the crash, and a Baltimore Police Department spokesman said he did not have any information on the crash.
Thousands of police traveled to New York Sunday for the funeral of Wenjian Liu, one of two NYPD officers killed by a man who first shot his girlfriend, Shaneka Nicole Thompson, 29, in Owings Mills on Dec. 20 before driving to Brooklyn and killing the officers and himself.
As they did at the funeral for the other officer, Rafael Ramos, many of the officers present Sunday turned their backs to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio when he spoke, a display of scorn for the mayor’s perceived lack of support for officers during a summer of anti-police protests.
“Let us move forward by strengthening the bonds that unite us, and let us work together to attain peace,” de Blasio said Sunday.
