I drove a carload of adults to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and we were fuming all the way home because we all loved the new Buick Envision and agreed it’s a car we would want to own except for Buick’s decision to manufacture it in China where it has been a hot seller. We don’t have a problem with GM’s choice to build such vehicles in China that are sold in China, but on the heels of the American people helping bail GM out from financial disaster, we feel that GM owes it to the American public to build the cars they want to sell to Americans in America.

On transparency, a double standard

The citizens of Michigan were schooled in good politics when our Legislature (read Republicans) did away with straight-party ticket voting. Not only would it lead us to become more informed voters, but, after all we were one of only 10 or so states that allowed it and so it seemed so antiquated.

Now we find out that the governor’s office and Legislature are exempt from Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act, which requires public disclosure of records related to government, and that we are one of only two states that apply a blanket exemption to electronic communication from the governor’s office and Legislature.

Isn’t it interesting that our Legislature is happy to have Michigan ranked 50th in transparency, and yet care so much about their residents’ citizenship?

American immigration needs overall suspension for a year to toughen screening and install transparency. Most American ancestors originally migrated or descendants stayed because of opportunity, reinforced by limited government. Not exactly the way you treat family

The recent closing of all but three Max & Erma’s restaurants in Michigan was understandably a shock to the employees who reported for work. Interviews with employees indicated that all enjoyed what they referred to as the “family atmosphere” in each of the facilities. Unfortunately, that family value was not shared by American Blue Ribbon Holdings, which owns and operates the restaurants. The jolt of employees reporting for work and seeing a sign that their restaurant had been closed certainly is not indicative of how real families operate.

AMA Welcomes California's Ted Cabral to Board of Directors

The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased to announce that Ted Cabral — a 38-year member from Penngrove, Calif. — has been elected to its Board of Directors from the Northwest Region.

Cabral fills the seat being vacated by Northwest Region Director Perry King, who could not seek reelection because of term limits.

“We are very thankful to Perry for all of the hard work he contributed to the AMA as a board member and as vice chair,” said Board Chair Maggie McNally-Bradshaw. “And we are looking forward to Ted’s contributions in the years ahead. He brings many years of experience as a motorcyclist.”

The Northwest Region includes AMA members living in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Northern California (District 36).

Cabral began attending AMA-sanctioned flat track races with his father in the early 1970s, and his passion for the motorcycle lifestyle has never waned.

He was the general manager of Cycle West Honda/Suzuki in Petaluma, Calif., for more than 20 years. In the 1980s, he held a professional AMA motocross license and later worked as a technician on professional motocross and road racing teams.

Cabral was the first general manager of Race Tech, developing many of the programs that have allowed the company to remain successful. He also created Top Shelf Motorcycle Tours, an all-inclusive motorcycle vacation company based in Northern California’s wine country.

In 2013, Cabral was appointed to the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission and currently serves as chairman. He also is a member of the California State Parks Transformation Advisory Committee.

“I am very excited about being elected to the board,” Cabral said. “I am an enthusiast. I grew up around racing. And it is important that those perspectives are represented on the Board.”

Cabral said he has three objectives as he enters his role with the AMA Board of Directors:
• To ensure that motorcycles are included in long-range transportation plans as a viable form of transportation, particularly in dense urban environments.
• To make the AMA stronger by attracting more members, increasing the value of membership and increasing the marketing of the AMA’s benefits.
• To strengthen amateur racing.

Cabral currently rides a 2014 Suzuki V-Strom ABS on the street. His off-road bikes include vintage motorcycles, mini bikes, a dual sport and a dirt bike.

Cabral’s three-year term on the AMA Board of Directors expires in December 2018.

What You Need to Know If You're 'Pulling Out' during Sex

Now, if used perfectly, withdrawal—pulling out during sex before you ejaculate—can be effective. Couples who use it perfectly have a 4 percent chance of becoming pregnant within a year, research from Princeton University estimates.

But “perfect” is the key word, and using it that way is extremely difficult. With “typical” use, the risk of pregnancy grows to 22 percent.

Perfect use means pulling out early enough so that no semen gets in the woman’s vagina or on her vulva, says Raegan McDonald-Mosley, M.D., M.P.H., chief medical officer at the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. 

Typical use—which is much more common—refers to pulling out too late, due to a lack of awareness or control of your ejaculation. And this, of course, significantly raises the risk of pregnancy.

Your success with pulling out depends on your ability, motivation, and willpower to do it perfectly every single time, says Dr. McDonald-Mosley. 

That’s tough, since it can be hard to predict when you’re going to ejaculate and even harder to react in time. 

On top of that, your sperm likes to move it. 

“Sperm is mobile,” Dr. McDonald-Mosley says. “It swims around. Even if a little bit of semen gets near the woman’s vulva, it can swim into the vagina and increase the risk of pregnancy.” (The vulva is the externally-visible part of a woman’s genitalia.)

What’s more, even if you do fully withdraw before you orgasm, you still release pre-ejaculate during sex. And that might carry a small amount of eager sperm.

Bottom line: Even if you do it perfectly—which is really difficult—withdrawal isn’t foolproof.

“If you aren’t comfortable with that uncertainty, you really should think about other methods that are more reliable,” says Dr. McDonald-Mosley. 

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) and birth control implants have low failure rates of less than 1 percent. Talk your partner about whether or not she’s comfortable using one of these more permanent methods. 

In comparison, condoms have a 2 percent failure rate with perfect use and an 18 percent failure rate with typical use. Birth control pills have a 0.3 percent failure rate with perfect use and a 9 percent chance with typical use.

Still, if you and your partner are OK with the potential of an unplanned pregnancy and would like to use the pullout method, there are some things you need to know to employ it more effectively.

Performing Kegel exercises can strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, allowing you to gain better control of your ejaculation, says Dr. McDonald-Mosley. With practice, these exercises will help you hold off your ejaculation until you’ve pulled out. 

“Contract your pelvic floor muscles—the ones that allow you to stop urinating midstream—for 10 seconds and release them,” she suggests. The more you do these exercises, the stronger the muscles will get.

Practicing them when ejaculation is imminent—like while masturbating or while having sex with a condom—will help you get used to delaying ejaculation until you’ve fully pulled out. 

A little knowledge of the female menstrual cycle is important, too. She’s most likely to get pregnant in the middle of it, so use a backup method like condoms during that time, says Rachel Jones, Ph.D., a research scientist at the Guttmacher Institute of sexual and reproductive health.

Even if you use withdrawal perfectly to prevent pregnancy, it still won’t protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. A condom is necessary to cover that base.

The Council Authority is currently discussing the options for new regulations regarding the safe use of motorcycle taxis throughout the city, with collaboration from the distributor on the unique merits of the Moto-Meter™.

Australian man's Simpsons tattoos have made him world famous

Cameron Baker started The Simpsons Tattoo account after a joke with his friends.

An Instagram account set up by a Gold Coast man and featuring photos of Simpsons-inspired tattoos has reached more than 90,000 followers.

“It started off as a joke between mates,” Mr Baker said.

Chief Wiggum makes an appearance in ink.

“I got the first tattoo for myself … and I started the page as some of my mates had them too.”

Despite having 12 Simpsons tattoos, Mr Baker was not allowed to watch The Simpsons when he was a child.

“It was a taboo, like kids these days with Family Guy,” he said.

“I’d try to sneak it in and see it here and there.

“[My first Simpsons tattoo] was of Ned Flanders on top of my left knee, done by a friend, a budding tattoo artist.”

Mr Baker’s tattoos spread across his thighs and chest, though are generally not very visible.

Ned Flanders never quite looked like this in the series.

“Mum doesn’t like to see tattoos, so I have that respect for her not to put them anywhere else,” he said.

Mr Baker also runs a Facebook page about Simpsons tattoos, and a website where visitors can upload photos of their tattoos.

“Some of the designs people come up with are super-obscure,” he said.

“They’ve got the weirdest tattoos.

“Some chick got the Triffid plant that was in the background of a few episodes done.”

He planned for two more tattoos, but was keeping them secret so others could not steal his ideas.

Mr Baker said there was a lack of understanding surrounding popular culture tattoos.

“Tattoos are a completely different thing now to what they were 20 years ago,” he said.

“Why not use something relatable, like pop culture, for tattoos – something you grew up with?”
