Motorcycle pile-up on Monaro Highway at Royalla leaves one rider dead, three others hurt

One man is dead and three others have been injured in an accident involving three motorcycles south of Canberra.

Police said three motorcycles collided at 5:20pm on Saturday on the Monaro Highway at Royalla.

A 65-year-old man died at the scene, and three others were taken to the Canberra Hospital to be treated for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

According to police, the collision occurred about five kilometres south of the intersection with the Monaro Highway and Old Cooma Road.

The Monaro Highway was closed in both directions for just under six hours while crash investigations took place.

The identities of those involved are yet to be released, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

The man was the 11th person to die on ACT roads in 2015.

All aboard! New York commuters will be transported back to the 1930's this holiday season with ...

  • The cars known as ‘City Cars’ had more standing capacity, wicker seats, ceiling fans, incandescent light bulbs

Alexandra Klausner For Dailymail.com

In the 1930’s it cost just a nickel to ride the New York City Subway and Coney Island had a glittering fireworks display once a week.

This holiday season, commuters will still pay nearly three dollars for a ride but a lucky few will be transported back in time as part of MTA’s annual tradition of reintroducing vintage subway cars and buses.

Customers can imagine themselves in a plaid tailored suit with a matching hat or a long glamorous dress with their hair on waves as they hop on a Subway car from the 1930s for a nostalgic ride around The Big Apple.

The MTA reports that for four consecutive Sundays in December, Subway customers can catch the ‘Shopper’s Special,’ a train consisting of eight cars from the 1930s that ran until the late 1970’s.

The cars known as ‘City Cars’ had more standing capacity, wicker seats, ceiling fans, incandescent light bulbs, and who can forget the Miss Subway posters from the 1940s to 170s that featured a beautiful New Yorker every two months.

‘For all intents and purposes, this was the first modern subway car and today’s subway fleets owe a lot to the design,’ said Joe Leader, Senior Vice President of Subways.

‘They were basic, durable and offered the expected levels of customer comfort for decades after they were introduced into service. We continue to build upon this strong foundation with each new car design.’

The  Shopper’s Special runs on Dec 6, 13, 20, and 27 and makes local stops on the 6 avenue line from Queens Plaza to 2 Ave.

The New York Transit Museum, which usually displays these cars throughout the city during special events, will have a pop-up shop open every Sunday during the nostalgia rides should someone wish to have a memory of the day to take with them.

The nostalgia rides are not limited to traveling underground. Starting on November 30 and ending on December 18, vintage buses will ride along the  M42 route for weekday daytime service between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m if the weather is not snowy or icy.

‘Each holiday season we offer a look back into the past with a holiday ride across 42nd Street.’

The ‘DT’ in the model number stands for ‘Diesel Transit.’ This model was delivered with cushioned seating but converted to hard plastic in the 1960s because of vandalism.

Bus No. 9098: Manufactured by General Motors, this model TDH 5106 introduced the two-tone green color scheme of this era’s standard and was the first New York City bus equipped with sliding windows. These buses were the last order of “Old Look” style buses from GM for New York City Transit.

Medic motorcycle mentors make safety ride

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS — Motorcycle mentorship rides are taking place throughout the Army, and Medical Command Soldiers, here, participated in such a ride, Nov. 19.

“Mentorship rides are a mandated requirement by the Army and are conducted by USAHC-SB, monthly,” said Sgt. 1st Class Julio Lobato, noncommissioned officer in charge, Soldier Health Care Services, U.S. Army Health Clinic-Schofield Barracks. “But, if a Soldier comes to the mentorship ride and doesn’t have the proper gear, they don’t get to ride.”

With 17 years of riding experience, Lobato enjoys training the clinic’s Soldiers on the right and wrongs of motorcycle riding. He ensures they’re complying with Army Regulation 385-10, the Army Safety Program.

The regulation requires checking each rider’s gear to ensure he is wearing a helmet; long sleeves; long pants; full, above-the-ankle leather boots; a reflective jacket or vest for greater visibility for other motorists; and protective eyewear (if wearing a half-helmet) or a visor (if wearing a full helmet).

Before the mentorship ride, Lobato and fellow USAHC-SB mentor Sgt. Scott Vrooman, NCOIC, Physical Therapy Clinic, gave an hour-long class that covered the basics, such as the route they would be riding, how to ride in staggered formation and proper hand signals. They also covered other topics, including how to ride in a single file formation when going through curves, or what to do if there was an obstruction in the road.

Lobato led the riders for 30 miles, while Vrooman followed as the Rear Road Captain, to ensure everyone stayed together.

If a rider had a problem and needed to pull out of the formation, Vrooman ensured that rider was okay and would stay with him until he could rejoin the formation.

“Sgt. 1st Class Lobato and I also have a master log of all of the clinic’s licensed riders who have motorcycles. We make sure their motorcycle license, registration, insurance and safety check are current,” Vrooman said. “We also give them heads-up if something is getting ready to expire, so they can get that handled.”

Lobato and Vrooman mentored proper riding habits and increased esprit de corps amongst the MEDCOM motorcyclists, and ensured the riders had fun while practicing safe riding habits.

Chairpersons in a (chair)man's world

ISLAMABAD: “I went to see the returning officer of my union council recently, who asked me what seat I was contesting. When I said ‘vice chairperson’, he immediately corrected me, saying, ‘no, no, it’s chairman’. I explained that both my running mate and I were women, but the officer insisted that the title of the seat, specifically, was chairman.”

Amna Mawaz is the Awami Workers Party (AWP) candidate for the vice chairman seat in UC-28. But the irony of contesting a post meant to be occupied by men – in name at least – is not lost on her.

Fouzia Arshad, the PTI candidate for chairman in UC-28, agrees. There are “a lot of hindrances, obviously,” to face as a woman in local politics, she says.

But regardless of what the seat itself is called, the women vying for it appear to be well aware of the role they can play in local politics.

Shabana Robin, the AWP candidate for chairman in UC-28, believes that women representatives can understand women’s problems in ways that men cannot.

Although there are several hopefuls campaigning for election on seats reserved for women, only a few are vying for general seats.

The AWP ticket for UC-28 is the only one in the federal capital where both candidates, chairman and vice chairman, are women. When asked if this was an intentional move, Ms Robin told Dawn: “We planned it. We saw that no other panel had [two women] on it, so we thought we’d do something different.”

Ms Ruben and Ms Mawaz highlighted some of the issues women face. Ms Ruben is a resident of France Colony, a registered slum in F-7.

“There are no dispensaries, no healthcare facilities here,” she said. Ms Mawaz said they are also concerned with public spaces for women.

“You could go to the most upscale area and men will still try to harass you. We want there to be a recreational space in every markaz for the public that caters to women and the youth.”

Ms Mawaz said that they want to increase the recreational activities available to residents of UC-28, to counter drug use among slum residents. She said the UC lacks basic recreational facilities, such as a library.

“We want to make this into a model UC,” she said.

They said there are no arrangements for education or for sanitation in France Colony, something they hope to change.

“We want to bridge the gap between France Colony and the rest of the UC,” Ms Mawaz said.

“We want to improve on education and sanitation in the colony,” Ms Robin added. They said they wanted to increase community action and participation in improving the UC.

Ms Arshad, the PTI candidate, is also concerned about the plight of low-income groups in the UC. But where AWP candidates explained the difficulties facing residents of France Colony and how the panel would try and mitigate them, Ms Arshad relied more on general platitudes.

She said that she had been active in politics for the last eight to nine years as a member of PTI.

When asked what she hoped to achieve as UC chairman, she said: “My ambition is to uplift this class, so they [can] also have equal rights.”

Ms Arshad said the UC panel was supposed to act as a spokesperson for the people and an intermediary between the people and MNAs and MPAs – who had lost touch with their supporters – as well as administrative and municipal authorities.

She added that low-income groups are deprived of basic amenities, such as food, healthcare and clean water.

“All these things, they make my heart ache. And that is one of the reasons I have decided to accept this ticket wholeheartedly.”

Ms Arshad said that women were working shoulder to shoulder with men in the political arena. “I think that a woman can be a much better administrator and coordinator than a man.”

Seemi Ezdi, the PTI candidate for vice chairman in UC-29, told Dawn that she was inspired to run for local government after living abroad for several years and noting the higher standard of living in foreign cities. She said she saw the opportunity to bring positive change to the city at the grassroots level and seized it.

Ms Ezdi, who is the sister of PTI Secretary General Jahangir Tareen, said she joined the party in 2008 and has been active in the party’s relief and welfare efforts since then.

Ms Ezdi said that, if elected, her panel would focus on cleanliness and plantation drives in the UC, which includes sectors F-10 and F-11. She also talked about installing solar streetlights and maintaining roads and pavements. She also hopes to open a local library and a women’s health club and establish a standby ambulance service.

Ms Ezdi said that despite the common perception about the challenges facing women in local politics, she was welcomed into the fold. Voters too, she said, responded better to women candidates and were more willing to allow them into their homes and maintain contact with them.

Surigao City mulls no-helmet policy to prevent crimes

SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews / 25 Nov) – A legal officer of the city government here said it may be possible to ban the use of helmets as a deterrent to robberies and other crimes committed by suspects riding motorcycles.

Lawyer Manuel D. Delani said it may be possible even there is an existing national law that mandates the use of standard protective gear, helmets included, for motorcycle riders.

Delani said if the city council would pass an ordinance, then a prohibition for the use of helmets can be realized within the city limits and this would allow traffic enforcers and policemen to ask motorists to remove their helmets.

The lawyer expressed his opinion when Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas has urged the city council to pass an ordinance banning helmets.

The call came with the series of robberies and murder cases, mostly in broad daylight, perpetrated by motorcycle-riding suspects. Some of theses cases were captured on CCTV but the suspects could not be identified because of their covered faces.

Among the latest cases took place on November 9 when four armed men robbed the local branch of the United Coconut Planters Bank, carting away P4.4 million in a heist that took less than a minute.

Delani said some cities like Dagupan, Cotabato and Tandag in Surigao del Sur have banned the use of helmets in an attempt to lessen crimes.

But several lawyers in town called this plan a knee-jerk reaction on the part of the city government.

Lawyer Carlo Reynaldo Lozada said the city government under the present administration and the police force have failed to address criminality.

“If robbers would use handkerchiefs or scarfs, would the city ban these, too?” said Lozada.

City Councilor Jose V. Begil Jr. said he doesn’t favor Matugas’s proposal.

He said it will violate Republic Act 10054, the law requiring motorcycle riders to wear standard protective helmets, and finds it a shallow solution to address crimes.

Begil, who is also a practicing lawyer, said banning helmets is not a decisive solution to robberies and other crimes.

The councilor, who chairs the committee on transportation of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, said might consider banning the use of helmet when one is not driving, or when in a business establishment.

He said he also favors half-faced helmets or short helmets that will show the wearer’s face.

Emelita S. Orongan, local chief of the Land Transportation Office, said she doesn’t believe banning helmets would bring down criminality.

“We have already a national law and even if there is a local ordinance that would support the ban of using motorcycle helmets, still that would not supersede the national law,” she noted.

Orongan told MindaNews that their office would not hesitate to apprehend those driving motorcycles without helmets.

GTA Online Adds American Football-with-Cars Mode 'Runner Back'

The GTA Online Adversary mode’s offerings will be further enhanced today with the release of Running Track

Running Back is inspired by American football and will be a permanent addition in the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions of the game.

It consists of two teams which can have up to four players each. The teams begin at opposite sides of a road, with a runner car charged with crossing the end zone line at the other end.

The runner car is the Benefactor Panto, while teammates and the opposition use BF Biftas. Their job is to try to stop the runner however they can.

There are three locations where Runner Back is available; Raton Canyon Bridge, La Mesa Bridgem, and Zancudo Tunnel.

Rockstar plans to host a livestream showcasing the mode and other Adversary addition at 17:00 ET today on YouTube and Twitch.

Have to Pee? Here's the Weird Reason Why You Should Hold It in

So when you go to Target to pick up a gallon of milk, you won’t leave with five new T-shirts, a pair of workout shorts, a poncho, and a bag of marked-down Halloween candy, too.

Here’s why it works: It all has to do with impulse control, says Iris Blandon-Gitlin, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology at California State University, Fullerton, who has conducted research on the benefits on your brain when you have a full bladder, including one that found it’s easier to tell more believable lies.

Not urinating activates a part of your brain that helps resist sudden urges—like not peeing yourself, obviously, she says. But because you’re triggering that self restraint, it can help you fight off other kinds of impulses—like the snacks in the checkout line.

This impulse-reducing effect may also help you concentrate better.

In another pee-related study, Dutch researchers found that people who had to take a leak scored higher than those who didn’t on confusing mental tests.

Instead of getting sidetracked on the test, the full-bladder folks were able to direct their attention to the question at hand. In effect, it gave them laser-like focus.

But don’t guzzle a gallon of water and put off peeing for hours at a time.

“In this research, we’re making people wait long enough where they have an urge to go, but they’re not dying to go,” says Blandon-Gitlin.

Besides, there are some Surprising Dangers to Holding in Your Pee. In the short term, holding it in too long can increase your risk for urinary tract infections, and may even lead to long-term scarring on your bladder wall.

You shouldn’t feel lower abdominal pain or low back pain, says Blaine Kristo, M.D., a urologist with The Urology Specialists at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. That signals you’ve held your pee for too long.

So the next time you’re shopping or you have an important project to complete, wait just a little longer than usual to use the restroom. It’s crazy advice, sure—but it just might work.

Health Ministry Receives 35 Motorcycles, 2 Ambulances

The United Nations Fund for Population Activities or UNFPA has presented 35 motorcycles and 2 ambulances to the Ministry of Health authorities to be used for the maternal motility rate in Liberia.

The UNFPA described the maternal motility rate in Liberia as too high and at such, it needed serious consideration. Speaking last weekend at the Ministry of Health during the presentation ceremony, UNFPA Country Representatives Oluremi Sogunro alarmed that maternal mortality rate was causing serious problem for women in Liberia, saying: “we notice this issue has been a problem and we at the UNFPA are aware of the many challenges that this poses on the health sector, and at such, we got some funding from partners to support efforts toward minimizing the maternal mortality rate in Liberia; it is from this backdrop we want to present this to you”.

According to Mr. Sogunro, the UNFPA was working in three counties, including Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu and Lofa. He said the two ambulances can be used in Grand Cape Mount and Lofa counties to convey pregnant women, while, and the other must be used by surveillance team in those counties.

He expressed the UNFPA’s commitment to helping the government in achieving its goals. “We know how to save almost all women who die giving life. The first step is to ensure they can plan their pregnancies and space their births. Skilled birth attendance at delivery, with backup emergency obstetric care and essential supplies in place, are also critical,” he noted.

He said the most challenging aspect of reducing maternal death and disability was finding ways to reach all women- even those in the poorest most remote areas, or in times of natural or man-made disasters – something, he said, involves bolstering health systems.

According to him, it was also critical that pregnant women are able to access all the care they need, from prenatal HIV testing to post-natal care for newborns, at the same clinic or health centre – an approach that saves money and saves lives.

Receiving the donation from the UNFPA, the Minister of Health, Dr. Bernice Dahn expressed gratitude to the UN agency, promising that the donation would be used for its intended purpose at the ministry.

Minister Dahn said the issue of maternal mortality in Liberia was worst. “I want to seize this opportunity to look forward with you and your partners in making sure that this issue is addressed,” she added.
