The Latest: Denver police say 1 fatally shot, 7 others hurt

Updated 8:46 pm, Saturday, January 30, 2016

DENVER (AP) — The Latest on a Denver shooting and stabbing incident that left one dead and seven others injured at a motorcycle expo (all times local):

6:10 p.m.

Denver’s police chief says one person was fatally shot and seven others were wounded when a fight broke out a motorcycle expo on Saturday.

Police Chief Robert White tells reporters that it was unclear what prompted the incident at the National Western Complex, where the Colorado Motorcycle Expo was being held this weekend. He says other events associated with the expo have been canceled.

White says investigators believe there was an exchange of gunfire. In addition to the person who was shot and killed, three others were shot. White says another person was stabbed and three others suffered injuries from a fistfight.

Police were keeping a heavy presence at the hospital where the injured people were being treated to prevent the incident from spreading from the expo.

Police are interviewing a person of interest, and White says investigators believe there was more than one shooter.

One person died and six others were injured in a shooting and stabbing at a motorcycle expo Saturday, Denver police said.

Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez says the incident occurred about 1 p.m. Saturday at the National Western Complex. The Colorado Motorcycle Expo is being held this weekend at the complex.

Dr. Kevin McVaney of Denver Health Medical Center said six people were admitted to the hospital. Three were in critical condition and three were stable, he said.

McVaney did not release details about what injuries they were being treated for.

Lopez said she couldn’t say whether the incident was gang related. She said police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.

A posting on the Colorado Motorcycle Expo Facebook page said the event was going on as scheduled Sunday.

“Rest assured that all of the offending parties have been ejected and all is well,” the posting said.

A Harvard Startup Plans to Fix Health Care With 'Lifestyle Medicine'

Sean Eldridge, co-founder and CEO at Gain Life.

The U.S. will spend almost $10,000 per person on health care this year, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. That’s a whopping $3 trillion annual projection, making our country a health care high roller compared to the rest of the world.

Yet, as The Commonwealth Fund points out, our nation’s actual health is poor. Americans have a higher frequency of chronic diseases – many of which are preventable – and have shorter life expectancies compared to our international counterparts. So what are we going to do about it?

Preventative medicine could be the answer to our health care woes. According to Gain Life – a startup operating out of the Harvard iLab that provides “lifestyle medicine” – changing people’s mindsets is going to be key to making any preventative medicine measures effective. But U.S. employers and individuals are coming around to this new take on health care, as more success stories support these programs as a long-term solution to wellness issues.

Why health care should be customized

Gain Life Co-Founders Sean Eldridge and John Peters – the latter of whom has a PhD and specializes in metabolic science – came together to make an impact in preventative medicine. From prior experience at companies like Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble and WeightWatchers focused on health care, they knew medicine as we know it isn’t the end-all and be-all to wellness. They noted that weight loss and other lifestyle changes can effectively mitigate many of the most chronic diseases affecting people.

Eldridge explained their rationale, asking, “Why is it that health care, unlike all other consumer goods and services, is one-size-fits-all?”

Gain Life is making preventative medicine personal. The startup offers separate 16-week programs for men and women – called ManUp and PowerUp, respectively – which make behavioral changes more appealing and engaging to each gender in their own special way. But the Gain Life team goes one step further: Their programs are tailored to individuals, what’s going on in their own lives and how they tend to cope.

“We’re offering truly personalized health care,” Eldridge explained. “It goes beyond gender and is catered to each individual…In the beginning, we have people take a 30-minute questionnaire to figure out what makes them tick, what their lives look like, what’s going on in their families, what stresses them.”

“We can personalize it right from the start,” he continued. “They continue to communicate their struggles and successes throughout the program, and we can keep making changes to make it work for them.”

Changing behavior for good

Gain Life recognizes that programs can tell you to quit smoking, eat better, drink less and move more, but they don’t get to the root of the problem. If people don’t address their underlying mindset and behavioral tendencies surrounding poor lifestyle habits, long-term success in maintaining their health isn’t likely.

To reshape people’s mindsets, Gain Life is applying tactics from behavioral science, including cognitive behavioral therapy and positive psychology. However, the startup inconspicuously incorporates behavioral modification, so it doesn’t feel like a shrink session.

“It’s presented to them in bite-sized chunks,” Eldridge said. “They’re insightful and make them go deeper to uncover their intrinsic behavioral motivations – without even noticing. People generally think it’s a diet when they start, but around week 12, they realize, ‘This isn’t a diet at all. I am a totally different person now.’”

“It’s more about how you think about the broader world and how you personally navigate through it,” he went on. “It teaches you techniques and tactics that aren’t specific to health, but are critical to changing your health.”

A culture shift won’t happen overnight

Preventative medicine is still a relatively new perspective on health care, so it’s going to take time for some people to warm up to this school of thought. As it starts to gain traction and produce proven results, though, it could become more attractive to employers, insurance companies and individual consumers.

“It’s not going to be an overall culture shift right away,” Eldridge expressed. “But the more success stories people hear about, the more people are going to say, ‘Hey, that seems interesting to me.’”

Even more incentive for people to participate in lifestyle programs like Gain Life is money. With recent health insurance trends causing consumers to pay more out of pocket, it could give people the push they need to change their ways.

“As more employers move to high-deductible health plans, individuals are going to feel it in their wallet and want to do something about it,” Eldridge asserted. “If individuals have to think, ‘Now that I’m responsible for the X, Y and Z medications that I wouldn’t need if I got my health under control,’ they’ll be more likely to take action.”

Would America go for a BMW 730d?

We’ve just learned that some markets are getting the BMW 730i, which uses a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Now that may sound like a very little engine to be in such a big, luxurious car and that’s because it is.

But it does pack a decent punch, a 258 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque punch to be exact. Now that’s actually decent amount of power, but is it enough to power BMW’s flagship car?

2016 BMW 730d xDrive test drive review 111 750x500 Would America go for a BMW 730d?

In America, we say no. Reason being, if we’re buying a massively luxurious and expensive vehicle, we want it to be massively powerful as well. And while American customers have started to come around on smaller displacement turbocharged engines, like the Ford F-150 Ecoboost V6, we’re not yet ready to put a four-cylinder in our big luxury cars, regardless of how much power it makes.

And this is understandable, as luxury cars need bigger, more powerful engines than a 250 hp four-banger. American customers are okay with smaller engines, but it seems that six-cylinders is the lowest cylinder count we’re willing to buy for luxury. The BMW 740i will sell well here in the ‘States, despite the fact the its only a 3.0 liter I6 engine. But those who have driven the new B58 turbo’d six know that it’s plenty enough engine for nearly any application and that it puts its power down in big, smooth, linear waves, perfect for a car like the 7 Series.

2016 BMW 730d xDrive test drive review 41 750x422 Would America go for a BMW 730d?

So a BMW 730i, with its little four-pot, won’t be as well received here in the ‘States, so it’s a good thing that it won’t be coming here. But the BMW 730d should.

The BMW 730d uses a B57 3.0 liter turbocharged diesel inline-six engine that develops 265 hp, not much more than the 730i, but 457 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough twist to hustle the Big-7. In Europe, this will likely be the volume seller, as smaller diesel engines will help luxury car buyers avoid certain engine and emissions taxes while also offer the kind of performance and torque they’re used to in big luxury cars. Now, Americans aren’t big on diesel, especially lately, but once they sampled the 730d, I think they’d change there mind.

In fact, after seeing how much better economy they can get with the 730d over the 740i, while not really losing any performance, it’s possible that the BMW 730d could change American perceptions on diesel.

Kickstand Up, Ready to Roll…

EAST TROY, WI – EBR Motorcycles has recently completed the protracted Wisconsin Chapter 128 business restructuring that began last April. The EBR 2012 – 2015 model parts inventory, brand name, trademarks, patents, operating licenses, testing equipment, assembly lines and all the future models under development are now owned by Liquid Asset Partners of Grand Rapids Michigan.

Liquid Asset Partners is actively reviewing options for a qualified individual or company to acquire or finance the motorcycle business and take it to the next level.

Erik Buell, founder of EBR, said, “This is indeed an incredible opportunity for a huge head start on getting an American sport motorcycle business going. I have to thank Bill Melvin Jr., Bill Sr., and the team at Liquid Asset Partners for seeing this and working toward activating the assets and building motorcycles again. It is also great that they have stepped up to immediately address parts availability for EBR owners. The old company had many of the pieces in place for success, and I am very energized by the opportunity to re-engage under a new corporation with the right ownership and focus.”

Kim Tordik, key management member, has worked side-by-side with Erik for over 30 years. Kim started with Erik in the early years of the fledgling Buell Motor Company, continued through the Harley years and on to the start-up of Erik Buell Racing. “I have seen and been a part of all the challenges and successes over the years. Working with Erik, we have always focused on keeping the customer first and top-of-mind. The amount of energy and enthusiasm for Erik Buell and his legacy brand is as prevalent now as ever. Knowing personally the extraordinary assets that are available and the creative talent we have, the best years are still ahead.”

The first step, beginning next week, will be to make service and repair parts available directly from Liquid Asset to the owners of the EBR RS, RX and SX models, as well as performance parts for previous Buell models that had been available from EBR. Since the motorcycle selling season is approaching quickly, management is making significant progress towards plans for the production of new RX and SX models. The goal is to have 2016 model EBRs rolling by mid-March.

Steve Smith, key management member, says “the ‘muzzle is off’ and that it is time to reach out to EBR suppliers, dealers, customers and fans around the world. During the restructuring process it was inappropriate for the staff to talk about the specifics. Not being able to speak up was very frustrating, as there was no shortage of false information and speculation being spread. The “Buell Nation” and EBR enthusiasts were inundated with all sorts of opinions and misleading stories over the last 9-10 months. With Liquid Asset now in control of the motorcycle assets and intellectual property, we are in a position to begin the process of restarting. We love and appreciate the continued enthusiasm of the EBR riders groups; to help with the future success of EBR, we encourage riders and enthusiasts to talk to their closest dealer and prepare their personal finances for hopefully buying a 2016 model EBR.”

Once the plans are implemented, the path is open for the next step of growth. The American innovation, speed and persistence of Buell and EBR that have been demonstrated and appreciated by hundreds of thousands the world over will still require significant resources to move to the next chapter. Liquid Asset has taken on the mantle of “brand steward” and is committed to preserving the true American Sportbike company with its lineage going back to 1983. Along with production initiating on RX and SX, new segment busting models that deliver Erik’s unique vision are on the drawing board. The new company has many assets and is ready to expand rapidly.

Anyone interested in more information about the EBR opportunity should contact Liquid Asset Partners at www.LiquidAP.com.

Anyone interested in EBR parts should visit www.LiquidAP.com/EBRparts/

Thank you,

Team EBR

Hesperia sheriff's deputies conducting 'Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation' Saturday

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Hesperia Station deputies are attempting to improve motorcycle and riders safety by conducting a specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation on Saturday in an effort to lower deaths and injuries, according to a news release.

Motorcycle fatalities jumped dramatically to a five-year high in California in 2013 when 453 motorcyclists lost their lives, representing a 28-percent increase from a decade low of 352 in 2010, officials stated in the release.

California collision data revealed the primary cause of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs by both riders and drivers alike.

Extra deputies will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where these crashes tend to occur, as well as looking for violations made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle crashes.

Deputies will also be cracking down on both those operating regular vehicles and motorcycles who are violating traffic safety laws.

Operations like this are aimed at curbing any more rises in motorcycle deaths and sending the numbers back downward. Over the course of the past three years, motorcycle involved collisions have resulted in 41 fatal and injury crashes in Hesperia.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department advises drivers to follow these rules to stay safe on the road:

— Make sure to share the road and look twice for motorcyclists, especially when entering the roadway, turning or changing lanes. Motorcyclists are allowed in HOV lanes unless prohibited by signage.

— For those riding the motorcycle, make sure to see and be seen by other drivers and use your lane position to increase visibility. Make sure to change lanes only when there is ample room and match speed to surrounding traffic.

— Always wear a DOT compliant helmet and brightly colored, protective clothing and ride with lights on during daylight hours.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Riders are urged to get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at http://www.californiamotorcyclist.com/ or 1-877 RIDE 411 (1-877-743-3411).

For more information or safety tips, call Hesperia Sheriff’s Station Public Information Officer Karen Hunt at 760-947-1549.

Frederick Russell Burnham Is the Most Interesting Man in the World

Burnham makes Wyatt Earp look like an armchair cowboy.    Photo: Library of Congress

About a third of the way into A Splendid Savage ($30, W. W. Norton), author Steve Kemper addresses the lure of gold rushes during the late 19th century by noting, “Sometimes reality matched imagination.” The same is true of the book’s subject, Frederick Russell Burnham, whose life was so full of derring-do and fearless exploits that, lacking historical record, one would assume him to be myth, more Man with No Name than Wyatt Earp. Burnham manages to make them both look like armchair cowboys.

During his teenage years in the 1870s, Burnham tracked the Apaches then fighting in the Arizona Territory. He once ran 22 miles over rugged terrain to deliver a message—and got there before a horseman who had left at the same time. Then he discovered enough gold in the Southwest to make him rich. Later, while traveling in what was then Rhodesia, he rode through an enemy camp of several thousand Ndebele warriors in an attempt to capture their king, was quickly surrounded, and escaped under cover of night. His gold fever not yet cured, he joined the Yukon gold rush. All this before he turned 35. (He lived to be 86 and barely let up.)

Burnham’s escapades make for easy story-telling, but Kemper’s writing is steady and fun. About Burnham’s time as a “messenger” for Wells Fargo wagons, Kemper writes, “The message was double-aught buckshot delivered from a sawed-off shotgun, a combination that could blow a window in a bandit.” Kemper writes in awe of Burnham’s skills as a scout, which were so well-known that he helped inspire the founding of the Boy Scouts of America and was asked to join Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.

That’s not to say that Kemper glosses over the man’s imperfections. He was a racist, and his wife and his three children, whose births he missed, were often left alone. But one tends to skip over those parts in search of his great adventures, which are only occasionally interrupted by lengthy asides on subjects like the short-lived U.S. Army Camel Corps. Such digressions would be distracting were Kemper not so clearly having a good time writing about them, which makes the topics almost as fascinating as Burnham’s life. Almost.

Lucky Cat Garage Sprintbeemer Furtherer

“I don’t see myself a bike builder,” declares Sébastien Lorentz, founder of Lucky Cat Garage of Ouerray, France. That’s certainly not something you expect to hear from the man behind the Sprintbeemer Furtherer, a re-imagined 1955 BMW R50 that took the runner-up spot in the Retro Modified Class at the 2014 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building.

“For me, bike builders are guys like Helmut Fath or John Britten,” Lorentz explains. “I’m just customizing, but I’m not really building bikes. Building a bike starts by building an engine and a frame and, for the moment, I don’t do that kind of work. I’m a rebuilder not a builder.” To further establish himself as an outlier in the custom motorcycle world, Lorentz came to the sport through an appreciation for performance, rather than strictly craft.

“The first bike I saw was [Eddie] Lawson’s Kawasaki 1000 S1 superbike,” relates Lorentz. “I cannot say why, but this bike impressed me when I was young. I had the feeling to discover a pure beast with a high concentration of power on two wheels. At this precise moment, I decided to ride motorcycles.”

Lorentz will tell you that he has always been preoccupied with performance. “As a teenager, I was deeply interested by custom and racing cars—classic hot rods, lead sleds, gassers and sling- shots—on one hand, and by everything fast, loud and dangerous—speed boats, warbirds, race planes. They were, for me, a great combination of graphics, great technique, and speed.

“Then I discovered the pleasure to ride when I was 14 years old on a moped. I got my motorcycle riding license when I was 18 years old and started riding old bikes. I was fixing them and already customizing influenced by both Kustom Kulture and racing cultures. I got my car license 10 years later, as all my income was spent on motorcycles.

“I think I did not decide to customize bikes. I started customizing bikes, as I couldn’t afford a brand new or even a running second hand motorcycle. I purchased my first bike as a wreck in pieces. I rebuilt it, and found it fun to find a way to make it in my own style.”

Lucky Cat Garage Sprintbeemer Furtherer race trackWhile many builders—or rebuilders—have a business plan, Lorentz started The Lucky Cat Garage in a more casual manner. “The Lucky Cat Garage is not a proper custom garage business until now,” he says. “It’s an after-work activity, but not a hobby. It’s a space of freedom and creativity for me, and my friends, who are also involved.

“Three years ago I was looking for a branding idea for this occupation to make it known to thank partners and supporters. This name had to reflect my thoughts and own style. The manekineko is a Japanese symbol of luck and fortune. I kept only the luck signification, as I do not intend to become rich with these projects.

“I was feeling, and still feel, lucky to be able to be supported by my girlfriend, my friends, my family, and some good partners in crime. But at the beginning, I think I am the luckiest guy, thanks to my girlfriend who’s really supporting my dreams. She’s my best friend also, and she’s pushing me always. That’s the main source of luck of the Lucky Cat Garage, I believe.

“Beside the love considerations, I feel also lucky to have so much talented friends who support and help when needed in the building process. Then going to an event and having the chance to live really intense moments and share emotions with friends is also something big and a great luck.”

The Sprintbeemer Furtherer, of course, was the result of much hard work, with the blessing of luck. For instance, one of the most striking features of the bike is the fairing inspired by MV Agusta.

“Not content with the graceful lines of the front wheel-enveloping fairing, it is painted with optical illusion-style alternating black-and-white arrows. “This came from the main idea that a sprint bike needs to frighten the competitors before the race,” Lorentz says. “I thought it was a first step to victory to impress and scare the challengers. The paint scheme was designed by my friend Benny Robinson, aka Machine 17. He had this brilliant idea of the arrows pattern, which is intended to disturb the competitor’s view. We spent almost two days drawing and masking the modified Air-Tech Streamlining dustbin fairing. Benny designed also the great race leather suit manufactured by Furygan to fit with the same design.”

Not just a spectacular motorcycle to look at, the Sprintbeemer is also a functional ride with a heavily modified BMW R 100 motor moving things along. “The inspiration came mainly from two different things—speed record quest history from BMW in the thirties, and sprint bikes and drag bikes from the sixties,” Lorentz says. “A bike should always be intended to be ridden, in my opinion.”

In fact, Lorentz points out that the biggest challenges in building the Sprintbeemer were “to find proper solutions and ideas to make it really fast.” The result is a bike that he describes as “always exciting” to ride and he tells us, “we’re still working on the bike between races. The bike is faster, race after race. The bike is not finished as there is still room for improvement on the technical side to make it faster—prob- ably a new exhaust system and hours of bench testing for fine tuning the NOS system. But you never know. It could change again in the future.”

If you’re hoping to get a Lucky Cat Garage creation of your own, you will have to be patient. “For the moment I don’t work for customers and only for myself,” Lorentz says, “as I’m trying to get my dreams and visions rolling on two wheels. That ain’t easy to sell your dreams. If someone trusts me enough and is ready to let me create him a bike the way I want, I could consider to do it. I believe I will manage to find my way following my own desires and not a commercial trend. It’s really hard to do if you have the pressure of customers.

Lucky Cat Garage Sprintbeemer Furtherer engine“But who knows? If we receive a customer query, we will first have to meet and take time to know each other. I don’t want to spend time and energy in a project I’m not fully excited by or just done for money. A custom bike for me is a big investment of time and personal thoughts, and even a big part of my life I will put in the project. I first need to ensure the customer and I will have a common view and feeling, and that he will be ready to wait for one-year minimum to get the bike finished. Otherwise, I think it won’t be something interesting and worthy of spending time.”

Beyond that, Lucky Cat Garage continues to have compel- ling rebuilds on the horizon. “The near future is first to finish a custom racer based on a Triumph 650 pre-unit in collaboration with Atelier Chatokhine,” Lorentz relates. “The bike is built for racetrack use only, but we have spent hours on details to make it easy to ride and fast. This project is quite interesting because we’re building a bike together with the French sourcers for vintage British bikes and the bike has been made to fit a girl.

“After that one we will go again on a Harley-Davidson Shovelhead, with a wishbone type frame. The challenge will be to try to get our own interpretation of a rigid frame Harley. We have some good plans and ideas, but good things take time and we plan to finish it in the next two to three years as the project is quite ambitious, even if we won’t built a one-off frame.”

On the Sprintbeemer Furtherer, you will note the question, “Who needs 9 lives?” on the fuel tank. “It simply means you do not need more than one life if you use it properly,” Lorentz explains. “That is to say 200-percent exploring different ways and using all your available time to live your dreams, and then it makes a clear connection with the cat legend of having nine lives available.”

The Lucky Cat Garage has built a wide variety of bikes, from the off-road SixDaysBeemer to the Buell-powered SonicRaceR. “I love much too much motorcycles to be interested just in one brand or one kind of machine. I think my style is driven by purpose and culture.” Lorentz says. “At the end the bikes I have done have this common point—they are ‘built on purpose’.  You can also consider all of these as a journey discovering new territories and areas.”

Bon voyage, and best of luck.

Heart Attack Warning Signs Different In Women Than Men; 5 Dangerous Symptoms to Watch Out For!

The symptoms of a heart attack in women often go unnoticed as they are likely taken as symptoms of other health issues. A scientific statement recently published by American Heart Association (AHA) in the journal Circulation highlights the difference of heart attack between men and women.

Reuters reports that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. However, the symptoms of a heart attack that may signal for an immediate medical attention are often different in women. If the symptoms are not recognized, this can lead to improper treatment and slower diagnosis.

The Washington Post reports that the way the life-threatening blood clot form differs in both sexes. Women have less severe blockages that may hinder blood flow. This leads to a more subtle presentation of the disease. Men, on the other hand, tend to manifest the classic type of blockage where the arteries raptures.

Aside from sex, age is also a risk factor for women. Women tend to be a decade older than men when they suffer from heart attacks. This makes them more vulnerable to suffer from other health problems, which will make treatment a lot more complicated.

More so, the race is also a risk factor for women. It is noted that heart disease in black and Hispanic women is undertreated, according to AHA. They may also suffer from other health issues like diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure during the heart attack. As a result, even young women with other health complication such as diabetes are four to five times more likely to suffer from heart attack.

Unlike men who experience excruciating pain in the chest before a heart attack, women experience a heart attack without chest pressure. Here are five dangerous symptoms to watch out for that can mean a heart attack:

  1. Chest Pain or discomfort – this is the most common symptom of a heart attack, reports Web MD. It may feel anywhere in the chest and not just concentrated on the left side. It may often last a few minutes, goes away and comes back, according to AHA.

  2. Pain in the arms, back, neck or jaw – the pain can be gradual or sudden. It often confuses women who expect pain on their left chest or left arm. You should report any uncommon pain above your waist to your doctor.

  3. Stomach pain – this symptom is sometimes taken for a heartburn, the flu or stomach ulcer, reports Web MD. The pain is reportedly severe as though an elephant is sitting on your stomach, says cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, MD.

  4. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort – the symptom may also include nausea and light-headedness. If you have trouble breathing for no apparent reason, then you might probably be having a heart attack especially if there are also other symptoms.

  5. Sweating or cold sweat – this feels more like stress-related sweating than sweating from exercise. This is very common in women who are having a heart attack.

Watch the video below for the subtle signs of a heart attack:

Heart Attack Warning Signs Different In Women Than Men; 5 Dangerous Symptoms to Watch Out For!

So you want to visit Cuba before "it's ruined"?

Since President Obama expanded authorized travel to Cuba a little over a year ago, U.S. travel to the island has increased by over 77 percent. Many of the approved travel providers that operate people-to-people trips have designed a variety of tours that highlight the country’s rich culture, history and people. With the increased travel, it has become routine to hear from friends, coworkers and neighbors who have visited and are eager to share their impressions. What has also become common is the all-too-often repeated phrase: “I want(ed) to go before Cuba is ruined.” This view ignores the very real possibility that many of the qualities that make Cuba such a special destination can be maintained and even enhanced through sustainable development.

This phrase implies that with time, Cuba will lose its “charm.” This may partially be due to the fact that as more Americans visit the island and the tourist travel ban is finally lifted, photos of a trip to Cuba posted on Facebook will become as commonplace as other Caribbean vacation destinations. The allure of visiting the once-prohibited Island will eventually wear off and with it the appeal the Island as an adventure travel destination. But that is only part of the story.

The other reason why some want to “visit Cuba before it’s ruined,” is because they expect that the “charm” of crumbling facades, cheap rum and cigars, old American cars and low prices won’t survive a transition toward a more open economic system. Some fear that as Cuba attracts foreign investment and continues reforming its economy, development and economic growth will fundamentally change what makes Cuba alluring. While it is possible that most people who hold this view do so with the best of intentions — wanting to preserve Cuba’s unique culture and heritage — implicit in this statement are two sad and patronizing assumptions: first, that economic growth, development and increased prosperity for the Cuban people are somehow undesirable and will hurt Cuba’s appeal to tourists; and second, that Cuba will ignore the need to preserve its own culture and heritage.

This notion that economic development will bring ruin deserves more thoughtfulness. After all, we can all agree that the crumbling façades that many find charming are the homes of one, sometimes several, families whose safety and well-being should not be compromised for the sake of “charm.” The old American cars on Cuba roads are beautiful and a testament to the ingenuity of Cuban mechanics, but also to the result of poor economic policies and a U.S. embargo that has more than its share of blame. And the low prices, cheap rum and cigars, are more a reflection of the $20 average monthly salary of Cubans than of a market flooded with cheap goods.

Cuba’s process of economic reforms has created over half a million entrepreneurs, many of whom are in the service sector related to tourism. Tourists, who book their Cuban stays on Airbnb guaranteeing a much more authentic experience, are able to do so thanks to the economic opening they so fear. The best meals tourists will eat are served at the country’s paladares — private restaurants operated by entrepreneurs. So while many fear how economic development may ruin their authentic experience, they are unwittingly enjoying its fruits. Just imagine what will be possible when private Cuban entrepreneurs are able to own and operate their own hotels, franchises and tour operators.

More than anyone, Cuba has an interest in preserving its unique culture and heritage as it develops. Since tourism is one the country’s most important industries, maintaining Cuba’s attractiveness as a Caribbean destination will remain a top economic priority. But, Cuba already is a leader in conservation. It is home to nine UNESCO world heritage sites and has protected approximately 20 percent of its territory and waters. The efforts of the Historian of Havana to preserve and revitalize Old Havana are an example of how preservation can be done in coordination with, and to support, economic development. Chapter XV of Cuba’s foreign investment law establishes that foreign investment must respect and contribute to the country’s sustainable development, environmental conservation efforts and the responsible use of natural resources. Foreign investors should proactively prioritize these conservation, preservation and environmental protection efforts.

As U.S. companies look toward opportunities in Cuba, they must understand the complicated legacy of U.S. investment on the Island and seek to play a constructive role. Doing so will not only help protect and enhance their brands’ reputations given the increased scrutiny from regulators, activists and the media, but will also protect their investments. Given years of economic stagnation and U.S. sanctions, there are many opportunities for investors to play a constructive role in Cuba. Understanding Cuba’s priorities, and leveraging their company’s experience, knowledge and resources, can contribute to and build on Cuba’s existing conservation and preservation efforts. This will provide a net social return that benefits the Cuban people, but also an economic return by ensuring Cuba’s attractiveness as a prized destination is not only preserved, but also enhanced.

Economic development and an increase in the quality of life for ordinary Cubans don’t have to mean the erosion of Cuba’s allure. Other countries have found ways to harmonize the two. Costa Rica has built a successful tourism industry by investing in environmental preservation. Cuba not only has the advantage of perspective, but also a track record of historic preservation, cultural investment and environmental protection. Rather than fear how foreign investment and economic development will make Cuba less “charming,” skeptics should understand how, if done properly, sustainable development can make Cuba a more prosperous and attractive destination.

Bajaj to make motorcycles with steel from INS Vikrant

Posted on: 05:19 PM IST Jan 26, 2016 | Updated on: 5:24 pm,Jan 26,2016 IST

Once the flagship of the Indian Navy, the INS Vikrant has seen its fair share of transformations. The ship started its life as the Hercules, an aircraft carrier for the Royal Navy in 1943, its construction necessitated by the exigencies of the second World War. But as the war ended in 1945, her construction was suspended by a cash strapped UK.
INS_Vikrant

In 1957, the unfinished Hercules was sold to India, towed to Belfast, Ireland and finished with the technology needed to operationalise it as an aircraft carrier. It was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1961 and was given the name Vikrant, meaning courageous. After decades of distinguished service, which included a pivotal role in the blockade of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during the Indo-Pak war of 1971, she was decommissioned in 1997.

From 1997 to 2012, she was docked in Mumbai, serving as a naval museum. The iron-clad giant was finally towed away to be scrapped in 2014. The journey of most ships would have ended here, but if two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto are to be believed, they are using the steel from the scrapped giant to make a motorcycle they are calling V.
BajajV2

The promotional video released by Bajaj (see above) traces the history of the INS Vikrant before laying out the connection. The teaser video does not reveal much about the nature of the bike on offer, but it looks like the V150, a premium commuter bike with a 150cc engine. The silhouette suggests a motorcycle with a sturdy build and a design that seems to borrow from both the scrambler and cafe racer families.
BajajV3

It is also clear that the bike will come in with dual rear shock absorbers and a 10 spoke alloy wheel. In all probability, the V will fill the gap between Bajaj’s Discover (commuter) and Pulsar (performance) brands. Bajaj currently holds 19% market share in the motorcycle segment and hopes to bump up to to 23% by the end of FY 16.
BajajV1

By releasing the teaser on the Republic Day, that too while playing up the Vikrant connection, Bajaj has achieved an emotional connect with potential customers. Now all eyes will be on the launch of the actual product on Feb 1, 2016.

I am no naval engineer, but the steel that is used to build an aircraft carrier needs to be tough, heavy. At a time when most other motorcycle makers are going to extraordinary lengths to shave off that extra pound of weight, one can only wonder if heavy steel is the ideal construction material. But then maybe the good folks at Bajaj have a trick up their sleeve. At any rate, we just hope that the bike on offer is a shade more manoeuvrable than its 20,000 ton naval namesake.

Motorcycle thefts rise as auto thefts fall

The number of car thefts dropped by 5.8 percent last year compared to 2014, but the number of motorcycle and scooter theft increased by more than 5 percent, according to figures from the foundation for tackling vehicle crime AVc.

The total number of vehicle theft dropped by 4.8 percent compared to the previous ear, amounting to less than 30 thousand stolen vehicles for the first time in years. “A nice milestone”, according to AVc director Titus Visser. The foundation is a collaborative group that includes the police, judiciary, insurance companies and car dealers.

The foundation noticed a remarkable decline in the theft of new cars (-14 percent), and partly attributes this to better alarm systems in newer cars. “Thieves now focus more on passenger cars that are between 4 to 8 years old”, according to Visser. The number of thefts in this category increased by 16 percent.

Thieves were also more focused on scooters and motorcycles last year. According to the foundation, this is partly due to the nice weather – if there are more motorcycles on the roads, more are also stolen. They are also easier to steal and to hide.

Only 37.4 percent of stolen vehicles were recovered last year, compared to 39.6 percent in 2014. In the coming years the foundation will therefore focus more on recovering stolen vehicles.

According to the US-based Gerontology Research Group, 112-year-old Yisrael Kristal is the world’s oldest man.

Yisrael Kristal. Photo: Family archiveYisrael Kristal. Photo: Family archive

The Group contacted the man’s grandson following the death of Yasutaro Koide in Japan, who was several months Kristal’s senior.

Yisrael Kristal was born on 15 September 1903 in Żarnów, near the city of Łódź, then in the Russian zone of partitioned Poland.

In his late teens he started to work in his family’s confectionary business in Łódź. He married in 1928. Forced into the Jewish Ghetto which the German Nazis set up in the town at the beginning of 1940, he was allowed to continue his business there.

After the liquidation of the Ghetto in August 1944, Kristal and his wife were deported to the German Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz, where his wife was killed. Having survived the ordeal, in 1950 he left for Israel with his second wife and their son, and settled in Haifa, where he established Kristal’s Sweets. He has lived in Haifa ever since.

It is still not certain whether Kristal will be formally registered as the oldest man in the world as the Gerontology Research Group requires documentation from the first twenty years of his life. The trouble is that the earliest official document in Kristal’s possession is his marriage certificate from 1928. (mk/nh)
