9 arrested including lawyer and Highway Patrol officers 3 years after California man’s killing

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A long and largely forgotten death investigation in California’s Central Valley has led to a vast and unexpected set of arrests that included three current and former Highway Patrol officers and a prominent defense attorney.

They were among nine people arrested in the 2012 disappearance and killing of Korey Kauffman, stemming from the belief that he was stealing the attorney’s antiques, law enforcement officials said at a news conference Friday in Modesto, California.

Those arrested either played a part in the killing of the 26-year-old Kauffman or helped cover it up and misled investigators, the officials said.

Kauffman was reported missing in April 2012. His body was found by hunters in August 2013 in rural Mariposa County near Yosemite National Park.

Modesto attorney Frank Carson orchestrated the killing and enlisted the help of two brothers who own a liquor store in Turlock, investigators with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said.

Carson believed Kauffman and others were stealing valuable antiques from storage containers on his property, and he wanted to stop the thefts by sending a message, investigators said.

Kauffman was on his way to steal from Carson when he disappeared, according to a 326-page court filing authorities used to get arrest warrants.

Carson’s attorney, Percy Martinez, said his client is innocent and his arrest was politically motivated.

Carson ran unsuccessfully for district attorney last year. He has been under investigation since Kauffman disappeared, Martinez said. Investigators searched Carson’s property in 2012.

“We welcome the opportunity to fight this in court,” Martinez said.

The CHP officers were all associated with the brothers and the Turlock liquor store.

CHP officers Scott McFarlane and Eduardo Quintanar are suspected of obstructing the investigation. They are accused of lying about their involvement with the liquor store and the two brothers who own it.

Quintanar told one of the brothers to tell another suspect to check under his car for police tracking devices, investigators said.

Former CHP Officer Walter Wells is suspected of murder.

“The entire department and I are appalled at the mere thought that one former and two current employees played any role in this incident,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said.

Wells left the CHP several weeks ago, and the other two officers have been placed on administrative leave, Farrow said.

Carson’s wife, Georgia Geanette Defilippo, is also accused of participating in the killing. Defilippo’s daughter was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and being an accessory.

All of the suspects remained jailed Friday.

Two deadly motorcycle accidents in one week raises concern in the CNY motorcycle community

Two deadly motorcycle accidents in one week is raising concern in the Central New York motorcycle community. A 59-year-old man killed on Thursday night, after being thrown from his motorcycle during a crash in Cicero in Onondaga County.

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Two deadly motorcycle accidents in one week raises concern in the Central New York motorcycle community.

A 59-year-old man killed on Thursday night, after being thrown from his motorcycle during a crash in Cicero in Onondaga County.

A 47-year-old woman was killed Sunday, after colliding with a van in Ellisburg in Jefferson County.

Ben Rabin is a motorcycle enthusiast. He’s also a lawyer, who represents injured motorcyclists.

“When there are car versus car accidents, people inside have airbags and other safety devices. Motorcyclists, we don’t get those things. We have helmets and we have boots and we have padding in our jackets. But when a car hits you, you lose that battle every single time,” says Rabin.

You’ve probably seen stickers that say ‘Look Twice, Save A Life.’

Motorcyclists encourage you to follow this advice, because in the blink of any eye, you can save or take a life.

“Take some time and make sure you realize that there are vehicles and motorcycles out on the roadway. Understand that you can’t turn directly in front of them or something really bad, like last night, is going to happen,” says Rabin.

Rabin says most motorcycle accidents happen when:

  • A car pulls out in front of a motorcycle

  • A car turns left in front of a motorcycle

  • A car changes lanes too quickly

Motorcyclists should always think about blind spots and remember if you can’t see a drivers eyes, chances are they can’t see you.

As far as Thursday night’s deadly motorcycle crash in Cicero, no tickets have been issued, and no charges have been filed yet.

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s office is still investigating.

The Cost of Driving: Are You Paying Less Than Your Grandparents?

Long road trips are a classic part of American tradition. Time was, the whole family would pile into the Chevy or the Ford station wagon and hit the road on vacation.

The Big Crunch wanted to know: On a per-dollar basis, how are we doing compared to Americans of previous generations? Between fuel cost, fuel efficiency and inflation, who wins?

Heavy steel frames and inefficient engines meant those clunker cars ate up a ton of fuel, and gas companies grew into giant corporations feeding the nation’s petroleum addiction. In 1956 — the year the Eisenhower Highway System was begun — American cars had an average fuel efficiency of 14.5 miles per gallon, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

That means a 19-gallon Buick Roadmaster (13.2 mpg) would have to tank up twice driving from Manhattan to Niagara Falls – a distance of about 415 miles.

At 30 cents a gallon (the national average in 1956) fueling up would only cost $9.65. Making that same trip now in a 2014 8-cylinder Chrysler would cost north of $60. That Chrysler makes about 23 miles to the gallon highway, which is right around average for the year.

But, you might point out that 30 cents in 1956 would buy you a lot more than it would today. Adjusted for inflation, that earlier trip to Niagara would cost you about $86 in 2014 figures.

It turns out that on a miles-per-dollar basis, we’re pretty much in the same place we were in 1956. You could drive an average of 7.2 miles per dollar in 2014, up just 1.6 miles from 60 years ago. Of course, the average price of gas has dropped since the beginning of 2015 — we’ll see how far it drops and update the figures when new fuel efficiency numbers are available.

Chart of U.S. driving fuel efficiency

There was a big spike in miles-per-dollar figures through the 1980s and ’90s — this economic efficiency peaked in 1998 over 14 miles per dollar in fuel. By 1998’s fuel-economic standards, our trip to Niagara would cost just $29.50 in 2014 dollars.

6 Reasons Gas Prices Could Fall Below $2 a Gallon

But since then the cost of gas has increased dramatically and with it, our miles-per-dollar metric in recent years has dropped. Fuel prices, of course, are connected to geopolitical events and are far more volatile than average fuel economies in vehicles, so a miles-per-dollar figure has a lot more to do with the cost of gasoline than with fuel efficiency of the vehicles themselves.

That also means that fuel cost is the unknown variable — less control in this case means great volatility. But we do have control (to a certain extent) of the fuel efficiency of our vehicles, which is why you see the

Teslas of the world. One of the big selling points of driverless cars is that with complete automation, vehicles can travel in the most fuel-efficient way possible, using as much as 40 percent less fuel.

The issue comes in the use of miles-per-gallon as a measure for vehicle performance. The idea is that a gallons-per-mile metric would be more representative — and easier to compare between vehicles — than the current standard of miles per gallon.

In terms of fuel economy, the farther you go up the fuel efficient scale, the less of an effect a specific shift has. Switching from a car that gets 15 miles per gallon to one that gets 20 mpg (just 5 mpg more) reduces the gallons you need to drive to Niagara Falls by nearly seven — from 27.7 to 20.8. That makes a much bigger difference than switching from a car that gets 45 mpg to 50 mpg (the same shift), which is just 9.2 to 8.3 gallons.

chart on U.S. autos fuel efficiency

This is where the math gets tricky, so pay attention. All “mpgs”

aren’t created equal: They matter more for clunkers than for super-efficient cars.

If the goal is to reduce the amount of fuel used by American cars, we should concentrate on bringing the lower echelons of the country’s fleet up just a little bit rather than investing billions to make a few cars ultra-efficient.

Restrictions on children riding motorcycles proposed

A PROPOSED ordinance imposes restrictions on child passengers of motorcycles in Baguio City.

The proposed measure, approved on first reading Tuesday by the City Council, is designed to reduce the number of children involved in motorcycle accidents, according to its proponent, Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr.

“While riding a motorcycle has many advantages on the part of the adult rider, small children should be discouraged or prohibited from riding a motorcycles because they are exposed to so many risks,” Yangot explained in the proposed ordinance’s explanatory note.

He said only children who are able to wrap their arms around the waist of an adult rider and whose feet can reach the foot pegs are allowed to ride a motorbike.

The child must also wear a helmet and other protective gear.

The proposed ordinance penalizes violators with a jail term of from two days to a month and a fine of as high as P5,000.

Rochester woman killed, man hurt when their motorcycles collide with van on central NY road

ELLISBURG, New York — State police say a 47-year-old Rochester woman has died after her motorcycle collided with a van on a central New York road.

Troopers say Bonnie Petrotta and 38-year-old Mark Northup, also of Rochester, were riding their motorcycles late Sunday morning in Jefferson County when they approached the entrance to Southwick Beach State Park in the town of Ellisburg, on Lake Ontario’s eastern end 50 miles north of Syracuse.

Police say an 18-year-old Syracuse-area man driving the van pulled into the intersection and into the path of the motorcycles. Petrotta’s motorcycle hit the van and she was ejected from her bike. Northrup’s bike glanced off the van.

Petrotta was taken to the hospital in nearby Watertown, where she was pronounced dead. Northrup was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The teen was charged with failure to yield the right of way.

Men's Fashion App myDiModa Uses Artificial Intelligence to Purchase Complementary Wardrobe ...

Today, myDiModa, Inc. launched the in-app purchasing feature for their new men’s fashion app, myDiModa. Now, the app’s artificial intelligence engine can play the role of a man’s personal stylist, making fashionable purchase recommendations that work well with items already in the user’s wardrobe. By partnering with Amazon, myDiModa now allows the user to make the purchase from directly within the mobile app.

“This solves the problem that men have applying the recommendations of fashion magazines to their own wardrobe,” said myDiModa founder, Terrence Carroll, “and it further differentiates myDiModa from other style apps on the market which just help the user organize their existing closet. With this new update, our fashion-savvy Artificial Intelligence algorithm will help you find and purchase an item on Amazon with the right pattern and color to style with the rest of your wardrobe, with a brand and price point that works for you.”

The myDiModa app uses unique, patent-pending technology to make it incredibly easy for men to create great-looking, stylish outfits. The user just takes photos of their existing wardrobe, the app identifies the clothing color and pattern, and then recommends matching, stylish outfits for any occasion. With the new in-app purchase feature, the user can apply that same technology to extend their wardrobe, combining recommended purchases with their current closet to create even more stylish outfits.

The user searches for an item, brand and price point that works for them on Amazon right from within the myDiModa app. When they see an item they like, myDiModa will use its patent pending process to identify its pattern and color and make sure the item is not too similar to anything already in the user’s closet. It will then make a purchase recommendation if the new item improves the user’s overall look and can be worn multiple ways.

With this innovative new capability, fashion-conscious men can not only manage and coordinate their existing wardrobe, but easily extend it with the click of a button, knowing their purchases will be both stylish and work well with their current closet.

To get personal style for men in the palm of their hand, visitors are encouraged to sign up for myDiModa at http://www.mydimoda.com. With the new in-app purchase feature, users will be able to extend their look just in time for fall fashions.

About myDiModa, Inc.

Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, myDiModa, Inc. was established in 2014 by Terrence Carroll, a technologist with more than 15 years of experience and a record of excellence in developing, growing and managing strategic accounts for major corporations. Frustrated with the time-consuming (and often unpleasant for guys) process of having to figure out the best outfits for work and play, he came up with an innovative fashion app for men – myDiModa.

The Latest: Police confirm shooting at Ferguson protest

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — The latest in the events marking a year since the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri (all times local):

12:00 a.m.

St. Louis County Police say an officer who came under heavy gunfire returned shots amid a protest in Ferguson.

The department confirmed the shooting in a statement on Sunday night, less than an hour after shots rang out as hundreds had gathered to mark the anniversary of the death of Michael Brown. The police department tweeted that at least two unmarked cars were hit by gunfire.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether any one was injured in the shooting, but minutes after the shots were heard, an Associated Press photographer saw a man lying face down, covered in blood, behind a boarded-up restaurant. It wasn’t immediately clear how badly the man was injured.

Later, an AP reporter saw a woman overcome with grief. Friends were consoling her. She screamed: “Why did they do it?” Another woman nearby fainted.

A man nearby said, “They killed my brother.”

A demonstration along West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson, Missouri, has been disrupted by gunfire.

Shots rang out just after 11:15 p.m. Sunday. It was unclear where the shots came from. It wasn’t immediately clear whether anyone was hit.

Protesters who had gathered in the street fled in multiple directions, hiding behind cars and taking cover in buildings.

A police helicopter appeared overhead, shining a spotlight down on the street. Dozens of police cars and an armored vehicle converged on the area.

St. Louis County Police posted on Twitter that multiple shots were fired and asked people to leave the area. A spokesman for the department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sunday marks the one year anniversary of the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson.

Protesters have been warned to clear the roadway along West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson, Missouri, or face arrest.

Several hundred protesters who had gathered to mark the anniversary of the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown blocked traffic. An officer said through a bullhorn they would be arrested if they did not move.

Someone threw a glass bottle at officers but missed. Others cursed at officers.

For the first time in three nights of protests, some officers were dressed in riot gear, including bullet-proof vests and helmets with shields.

A grand jury and the U.S. Department of Justice declined to prosecute Ferguson Police officer Darren Wilson, who shot Brown, but the shooting touched off a national “Black Lives Matter” movement.

9:30 p.m.

Hundreds of demonstrators in Ferguson, Missouri, have taken shelter under awnings as a severe storm brings heavy rain, lightning and strong wings to the area.

There was a much heavier police presence along West Florissant Avenue late Sunday than on previous nights. Officers patrolled the street and nearby shopping centers, which were the site of protests, riots and looting after the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown a year ago.

A beauty supply store had a front window broken out after nightfall. It wasn’t clear if anything was taken, and there was no indication the damage was related to the demonstration. Police were on the scene.

The anniversary of Brown’s death has sparked renewed protests, though ones much smaller than those a year ago. Organizers of some of the weekend activities have pledged a day of civil disobedience on Monday, but have not yet offered specific details.

A march to mark the anniversary of the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown has ended in Ferguson, Missouri.

The march Sunday afternoon started at the site where Brown, who was black and unarmed, was fatally shot by Ferguson officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9, 2014. Brown’s father, Michael Brown Sr., was leading the march, holding hands with others.

Pausing along the route at a permanent memorial for his son, Michael Brown Sr. said, “Miss you.”

After the march was a service at a Ferguson church.

A grand jury and the U.S. Department of Justice declined to prosecute Wilson, who resigned in November, but the shooting touched off a national “Black Lives Matter” movement.

In New York, a sea of motionless human bodies lay on a Brooklyn pavement, marking the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of Michael Brown.

Demonstrators maintained their silence on Sunday for a few moments before rising and joining others marching from the Barclays Center arena into Manhattan for another rally later in the day.

Among those marching were a dozen people carrying a giant banner reading, “Black Lives Matter.”

The death of the 18-year-old on Aug. 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri, was among the catalysts of a national movement calling for change in the relationships between police and minority communities.

Another of the catalysts was the death of Staten Island resident Eric Garner, a black man who died in July of last year after being restrained by a police officer.

A grand jury and the U.S. Department of Justice declined to prosecute Wilson, who resigned in November, but the shooting touched off a national “Black Lives Matter” movement.

Vernice Durgins, a 60-year-old black woman from Ferguson, said she’s seen little progress in the past year, and she thinks about what happened like it could have been her sons or grandsons.

Health experts classify men's excessive use of supplements as eating disorder

bodybuildingHealth experts at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association on Thursday disclosed that the drive to achieve a well-sculptured and lean, muscular body is driving men to depend too much on supplement intake – a development that has started to reflect a eating disorder and some underlying problems.

In order to boost their physiques and activity levels, men rely on performance-enhancing supplements such as whey protein, creatine, and L-cartinine among others; because advertisers say these supplements bless users with the kind of body physique they desire.

“The marketing efforts, which are tailored to addressing underlying insecurities associated with masculinity, position these products perfectly as a ‘solution’ by which to fill a void felt by so many men in our culture,” said Richard Achiro, PhD, of the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, Los Angeles.

Experts warn that under such conditions, it is possible for men to look healthy and fit, but their organs may not be in the best of health as a result of some emotional issues behind their use of such supplements.

“Even if they look good on the outside, do they have excessive diarrhea?  Are their livers and kidneys starting to give out from having to detox toxins? Are they adhering to this regimented style of eating in such a way to compromise their relationships and work life?” said Achiro, who is a registered psychological assistant.

About 195 volunteers aged 18-65 with a mean age of 33 were recruited for the study; and they were all men who had taken legal supplements within the previous 30 days of the study, while also exercising for at least twice weekly. Through an online survey, researchers were able to collect needed data on their self-esteem, eating habits, gender role conflicts, body image, and use of supplements among others.

Eventually, 29% of the participants were bothered with their use of supplements and 40% didn’t care, something researchers think was indicative of emotional and psychological problems – meaning the men knew the increased or prolonged use of such supplements was dangerous but couldn’t bring themselves to stop it.

“Like an eating disorder, this can become really rigid, a person’s need for these supplements,” Achiro said. “To have to take them at certain times during the day can really start to intrude upon one’s ability to live a life that’s otherwise fulfilling.

“Because we just assume sometimes that’s what men do, collectively, it’s kind of a normal thing, and in fact they’re overusing these supplements in a way that is damaging themselves and the people around them in some cases,” he added.
