A PROPOSED ordinance imposes restrictions on child passengers of motorcycles in Baguio City.
The proposed measure, approved on first reading Tuesday by the City Council, is designed to reduce the number of children involved in motorcycle accidents, according to its proponent, Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr.
“While riding a motorcycle has many advantages on the part of the adult rider, small children should be discouraged or prohibited from riding a motorcycles because they are exposed to so many risks,” Yangot explained in the proposed ordinance’s explanatory note.
He said only children who are able to wrap their arms around the waist of an adult rider and whose feet can reach the foot pegs are allowed to ride a motorbike.
The child must also wear a helmet and other protective gear.
The proposed ordinance penalizes violators with a jail term of from two days to a month and a fine of as high as P5,000.
