The 17th annual March for Jesus wove its way through the town of Olney on Saturday, Oct. 3 with a line-up at Tommy Perkins Park. The parade started at the park on S. Avenue and turned the corner to go down Main Street heading west to Avenue J, and then looped back down Elm and head to the First Baptist Church parking lot. Floats of children, marching parents, and even a lawn mower were among the many parade participants.
The Christian Motorcycle Association s Drill Team gave a demonstration on their motorcycles after the parade and they ran through a series of drills which featured high-speed crossovers, counter-rotating circles, figure eights, and other maneuvers which entertained the audience. Fobbs founded the March for Jesus and along with a team of organizers in Olney, has put on the event all these years since 1999. Fobbs looked around and saw that people were marching for all sorts of things, but as she saw that nobody was marching for Jesus, so she started the march which has gone on for the long 17 year stretch.

Directly after the parade in the First Baptist parking lot the Christian Motorcycle Association’s Drill Team gave a demonstration on their motorcycles as they ran through a series of drills which featured high speed cross-overs, counter-rotating circles, figure eights, and other maneuvers which entertained the audience.
The parade participants then made their way to the civic center for a free lunch and a special program, live music from members of the First Baptist Church, children’s activities like bounce houses and a puppet show, and door prizes and giveaways which included six bikes. Jesse Erhart the director of the Refuge Mission, a large youth outreach center under construction in Olney, was the guest speaker for the event.
Gone are the days when there was a clear demarcation of what was considered feminine clothing, and what was butch. Though a woman experimenting with ‘masculine’ clothes is hardly new, there seems to be an uprising of sorts in the arena of men’s fashion too. We recently saw Alia Bhatt showing off her feisty dance moves donning a moustache and tuxedo in the Gulaabo song from Shaandaar. Before that, we had Ranveer Singh walking into media events sporting floral prints galore. hitlist takes a cue from some fashion forward Bollywood celebs who have successfully shattered stereotypes by togging up in gender-neutral clothing…Distress to impress
Distressed denims are all the rage and have gotten a nod from both men and women.

THE Tasmanian Government has recently made a submission to the Senate Economics References Committee inquiry into economic security for women in retirement.
Although women have increasing workforce participation and financial independence, significant socio-economic disparity still remains between men and women, illustrated by the pay gap between men and women and the gap in superannuation at retirement.
The recent ANZWomen’s Report, Barriers to Achieving Financial Gender Equity, highlights that although female workforce participation has risen by more than 25 per cent over the past three decades, fulltime female workers nationally were paid 18.8 per cent, or $295 a week, less than men.
This difference equates to $15,000 a year or $700,000 over the entire career of a woman. Sadly, as the report points out, women in Australia continue to earn lower wages simply because of their gender.
Last year’s Graduate Careers Australia report An analysis of the gender wage gap in the Australian labour market found that males’ starting salaries were 9.4 per cent higher than female starting salaries.
Even when the field of education, enrolment and occupational characteristics of graduates were controlled, males’ starting salaries overall were still 4.4 per cent higher than those for females.
The gender wage gap also cannot be explained by way of education attainment. The Workplace Gender Equality Agency recently found that of all women aged 20 to 24 years old 89.5 per cent had attained Year 12 qualifications or above, compared to 83.4 per cent of men in the same age bracket. Of all women aged 25 to 29 years old, 42 per cent had achieved a bachelor degree or above, compared to 30.6 per cent of men in the same age bracket.
The agency also found that the gender pay gap widens considerably for women in management roles, with the gender pay gap at key management personnel level 28.9 per cent and at executive/general manager level 27.5 per cent. This shows that women are not accessing the same earning opportunities as men in leadership positions and the gender wage gap is most prominent in senior leadership positions.
Women are also under-represented in leadership positions. Recently, the Tasmanian Government released the Women on Boards Strategy 2015-20; a five-year plan for improving gender equity on Tasmanian Government boards and committees, because women represent just 33.8 per cent of members on Tasmanian Government boards and committees.
The Tasmanian Government is now committed to a target of 50 per cent representation of women across government boards and committees by July 2020.
Last year, the Tasmanian Government released the very first Women and Girls in Tasmania Report, a biennial report profiling the status of women and girls in Tasmania. The report found that there are substantially higher rates of women in Tasmania who have never had a superannuation account (29.7 per cent) than men (18.7 per cent). There is also a high percentage of women with low value superannuation accounts (balances between $1 and $9999). Of those categorised in the lowest account balance level, 61.3 per cent are women and 38.7 per cent are men. Women are also over represented in the second lowest balance category ($10,000 to $24,999) in superannuation funds.
Men are more likely to have high superannuation accounts, with 65.1 per cent ranked in the $50,000 to $99,999 category and 64.3 per cent in the $100,000 or more category.
The most serious consequence of all this is the likelihood of poverty for women in retirement. The ANZ Women’s Report found that 90 per cent of women will retire with inadequate superannuation savings.
Single women are most likely to be reliant on the full age pension as their sole source of income and are at greatest risk of persistent poverty.
Women on average are living longer than men, so women who do have a superannuation lump sum balance at retirement are required to spread this over more years than men.
Former Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick has suggested a number of policy reforms to redress women’s disadvantage in the retirement income system. However, the crux is to close the gender pay gap.
Measures include providing more flexible work arrangements and support to employees to obtain a balance of paid work and caring responsibilities across the life cycle.
Supporting working parents by providing flexible, accessible and affordable childcare plus other care services can help in assisting employees to increase their workforce participation along with shared caring leave, particularly after the birth of a child. Such measures will assist in closing the gender pay gap and provide a more equitable economic security upon retirement.
Under the Tasmanian Government’s Workplace Diversity Plan, the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s State Service Management Office is also working to identify barriers to targeted employment participation, including women in the senior levels of the state public service.
The Government has also partnered with the University of Tasmania in a project to produce a series of fact sheets with an emphasis on the gender wage gap which will be distributed to female students to highlight the importance of subject choice and to empower women to negotiate for better pay as they enter the workforce so that in the future, there will be greater economic security for women in retirement.

Paradise >> A motorcycle rider died after crashing into a sedan Tuesday at the intersection of Clark and Buschmann roads.
Paradise resident Michelle Smith was driving south on Clark Road and happened upon the accident. She saw another woman running to the scene and Smith, a dental hygienist, pulled over to help.
Smith said the anonymous woman was a registered nurse. The two of them pooled their medical knowledge to help the motorcycle driver.
“He was still breathing,” said Smith. “He had a pulse, but it was fading.”
They administered chest compressions to help keep the pulse going, to no avail.
Paradise police hadn’t released the identity of the man by press time. Smith guessed he was in his late teens or early 20s.
Clark Road was closed to traffic in both directions. Buschmann Road was closed as well. The road remained closed for about three hours.
The accident happened just before noon when the motorcycle rider was driving his blue Yamaha south on Clark Road..
Paradise police officer Steve Bertagna said Paradise resident Frank Nolan, 82, exited his driveway and attempted to cross Clark Road to head west on Buschmann Road.
The Yamaha was heading down Clark Road and crashed into the passenger side of Nolan’s Toyota Corolla.
The accident is still under investigation, but preliminarily, Nolan appears to have violated the right of way, Bertagna said.
He said both parties were wearing their safety gear, no drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident and speed did not appear to be a factor.
Still, Bertagna said that is what the preliminary investigation shows, and the investigation will be ongoing.
He said motorcycles are hard to see and stressed the importance of drivers making eye contact with each other and for motorists to be aware of everything around them.
“It’s unfortunate there was a fatality,” he said. “These are always the situations we all fear.”

A significant number of men experience depression during their partner’s pregnancy, according to new research in Canada.
The findings, which appear in the American Journal of Men’s Health, may have important clinical implications for depression screening and early prevention efforts in expectant fathers.
“The mental health of men remains a neglected area of research and one that is not adequately addressed during the transition to parenthood,” says senior author Deborah Da Costa, researcher in the division of clinical epidemiology at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and associate professor in the department of medicine at McGill University.
“Highlighting these findings in Canada increases awareness in expectant parents, new parents, and importantly in healthcare providers who are in contact with expectant couples during prenatal appointments.”
The research team recruited 622 men in Quebec over a period of one and half years. Expectant fathers completed online questionnaires measuring various factors such as mood, physical activity, sleep quality, social support, marital adjustment, financial stress, and demographics, during their partner’s third semester.
The researchers found that 13.3 percent of expectant fathers experienced elevated levels of depressive symptoms during their partner’s pregnancy.
Most of the factors associated with depression in men were identified to be modifiable, meaning that tools are available to help cope with these difficulties. For the first time in this area, researchers also looked at sleep in relation to depression and found that men who were having sleep difficulties were more at risk of experiencing depression.
“These are important signals because some of these factors may worsen in postpartum; certainly sleep will be compromised in the first years,” explains Da Costa, who is also a researcher from the Experimental Therapeutics and Metabolism Program at RI-MUHC.
“We know that antenatal depression is the strongest predictor for postnatal depression, so teaching fathers and screening for this early on can be beneficial in terms of decreasing the risk or the continuation of depression postpartum.”
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research funded the work.

In the second series of extracts from his new biography of Margaret Thatcher, Charles Moore recounts her epic battle with NUM leader Arthur Scargill and her brush with death when the IRA bombed the Grand Hotel in Brighton during the Conservative Conference in 1984. She was also made aware of rumours that some of her close colleagues and acquaintances were sex abusers though evidence was never produced.
Throughout, she was acutely aware of her need to show her steely character, but also her femininity, as a woman in a man’s world.
Although almost no women had formal power during Mrs Thatcher’s premiership, several were important in what might be called her court.
They testified to aspects of her character which men tended to understand less well.
In the opinion of Carla Powell, [her policy advisor] Charles’s vivacious Italian wife, who frequently gave Mrs Thatcher informal assistance with clothes and home decoration, “everything about her was totally, totally feminine.
She adored the details of clothes. I called her ‘La Bionda’ [‘The Blonde’] because she loved the boys [her private secretaries].”Mrs Thatcher liked the way they prepared her for interviews and public appearances, and “the boys” seemed to understand this. Robin Butler, her principal private secretary, used an equestrian metaphor about getting her ready for Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament:
“it was important that there was the right amount of sweat on the flanks.”
With Mrs Thatcher, Carla Powell continued, “everything was a woman thing”. It was important not to upstage the Prime Minister. She recalled being lectured by Robin Butler: “remember that Mrs Thatcher is a woman, so don’t overdress as you usually do”.
Her own marriage was undoubtedly strong and even, according to Carla Powell’s testimony, which differs in this from the consensus, flirtatious. She recalled a scrap of dialogue.
Denis: “You know I don’t like you dressed in black”.
Mrs Thatcher: “I have to. I’m the Prime Minister.”
“Then Denis made a ‘go on with you!’ gesture.”
