Top trends in men's fashion

From futuristic to suave, edgy to comfortable, these are the top trends in men’s fashion

1. INFUSE METALLICS
For a futuristic metallic twist, ditch that run-of-the-mill formal look and pick a striking garment, like a flashy gold bomber-like jacket. Let this streetwear piece be the highlight of your look and keep the rest simple. Finish with a pair of golden canvas shoes with the least amount of shimmer.

2. WHITE-ON-WHITE
All-white outfits are not common occurrence. Hence, by wearing white, you are set to make a visual impact and be in the spotlight. For an ensemble that retains an elegant air and a strikingly crisp aesthetic, combine a white shirt or T-shirt, jacket and tailored trousers with brown lace-ups. Tones of white and cream naturally add bulk to your frame. So, it’s a great choice if you have a thin frame and want to create the illusion of broader shoulders.

3. PATTERNED TROUSERS
Make a real statement by utilising print on your leg wear instead of your jacket. There are several ways of trying your hand at this one, depending on just how comfortable and confident you are with experimenting. The easiest way to sport pattern would be to wear check trousers with a complementary, neutral-coloured blazer. For a bolder ensemble, pick some on-trend tartan. You can also try chalk stripes, polka dots, camo prints, paisley or flecked designs.

4. VELVET WONDER
Think an understated yet impressive masculine look in smooth, luxurious velvet. Pair a practical blazer with slim-fit trousers in the same colour. Deep dark winter tones like midnight blue, emerald green, burgundy and black will impart a certain flamboyance. Velvet has the knack of adding a glamorous edge to your basic ensemble. Make sure you go for garments with a sharp, flattering cut for maximum effect.

5. PRINTS & CHECKS
Don’t enslave yourself to tuxedos and blazers. Unless the party commands a strict dress code, you can loosen your collar and shake things up a bit. Create a playful, masculine look with an interesting use of checks and innovation in print placement. Sport a casual knit pullover with powerful animal prints that are much in vogue. Pair it with chequered pants, and carry a manpurse to keep your essentials. A stylish pair of loafers in the same fabric can elevate the look.

6. PLAY WITH PATCHWORK
Cut and paste fabrics are a key theme this season. Let your trouser and jacket pop up with pieces in contrasting shades and fabrics. Your look must revolve around two or three colours. More than that, and you cross over to the tacky zone. If you are planning to accessorise, the add-ons must belong to the same colour scheme.

Oli Jones, bipolar disorder sufferer speaks with brutal honesty about depression

  • Oli Jones was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2013 after bouts of depression in which he had suicidal thoughts

  • Suffered crushing lows where he wouldn’t get out of bed for days

  • Also experienced ‘highs’ where he would barely sleep and over-exercise

  • Is now recovered and is campaigning to raise awareness to men’s health

Madlen Davies for MailOnline

Sat at the wheel of his car, Oli Jones was ready to end his life.

As his hands gripped the steering wheel, he almost moved to make the turn that would result in a crash from which he wouldn’t return.

Then, at the last moment, he stopped himself.

‘I just couldn’t do it to my kids,’ he said, thinking of Lily, now seven and Wynn, three.

His own father had committed suicide when he was just 18 months old, and he didn’t want his own children to grow up without him.

He was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and is now stable, recovered, and thrilled to be back at work as a tennis coach.

Now, he is campaigning to raise awareness to men’s suicide and wants to encourage men who are struggling to cope to ask for help.

Oli Jones, 33, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a bout of suicidal depression six months ago. He has now recovered and is campaigning to raise awareness to men’s health

After struggling with his emotions since his early 20s, Mr Jones began feeling suicidal in 2012. He thought about driving his car off a bridge, or ending his life with carbon monoxide

Mr Jones, 33, told MailOnline: ‘Men are supposed to be strong, it’s difficult to admit our feelings.

‘There’s a barrier to do with masculinity that stops men from talking. They have a front up.’

He added: ‘Men think if they ask for help then they’re letting people down.

‘But you’re not letting anyone down. Everyone needs to talk about things, everyone needs help.

‘We need to teach men to be in touch with their feelings so they don’t spiral out of control. It’s not a sign of weakness.’

Last year, more than three-quarters of all suicides were men and suicide was the biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK – with 12 men taking their own lives every day.

And a recent survey by suicide prevention charity CALM found four out of ten men have considered killing themselves.

Mr Jones, from Sale, Manchester, continued: ‘Financial troubles, relationship problems. Depression amplifies all of those. It’s an illness which leads people to take their own life.

‘A normal stable-minded person can handle those things. It’s not external things that cause suicide, it’s part of the illness.’

He was diagnosed with bipolar after struggled with his emotions for years.

He became depressed in his 20s at university, where he began lacking energy, felt tearful, and often stayed in bed for days on end.

‘I used to say I had headaches or a cold to hide it,’ he said.

WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER?

Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).

When a person become depressed, they may feel sad or hopeless and lose interest or pleasure in most activities.

When their mood shifts in the other direction, they may feel euphoric and full of energy.

Mood shifts may occur only a few times a year or as often as several times a week.

Although bipolar disorder is a disruptive, long-term condition, moods can be kept in check by following a treatment plan.

In most cases, bipolar disorder can be controlled with medications and psychological counseling (psychotherapy)

 Source: Mayo Clinic

Less frequently, he experienced ‘highs’, in which he would sleep for only a few hours, or stay up all night, feeling full of energy and brimming with ideas.

Additionally, he would have grandiose thoughts and exercise intensely, going to the gym and playing tennis as often as possible.

On one occasion, he went to the supermarket and came back with nothing but six mangoes.

‘I didn’t even like mangoes,’ he said.

Despite his struggles, he managed to finish university, and build a successful career as a tennis coach.

He married his girlfriend, Stephanie, from whom he is now separated, and became a father.

On paper, he seemed to have an idyllic life.

But in 2012, he was diagnosed with depression and prescribed anti-depressants after becoming suicidal.

He suffered from catatonia, a symptom of the illness where a person moves very slowly or stops moving altogether.

He said: ‘It can have quite physical symptoms. I stopped being able to walk and talk. I stopped getting out of bed. I had no appetite.

‘For the birth of my son, Wynn, I couldn’t look after him very well. I wasn’t functioning.’

He had constant suicidal thoughts, and says he very nearly attempted to end his life on one occasion.

He said: ‘I hid it from my family – I didn’t tell them I was suicidal. It’s difficult to talk about things like that.

Mr Jones would sometimes experience manic highs as well as depression. At one point, he went to the supermarket and bought nothing but six mangoes

Now he has been prescribed Lithium for his bipolar disorder, which has stabilised his mood. He is thrilled to be back coaching tennis, and the Lawn Tennis Association has made him an ambassador for mental health

‘I almost attempted suicide. I was sat at the wheel of the car and was going to do it. I wanted to drive off a bridge. Or use carbon monoxide.’

But ultimately, the thought of his children held him back.

He said: ‘I didn’t want them to grow up without a father.

‘I lost my father at 18 months. He was being treated for depression and he wasn’t taking his meds when he died.

‘I was raised by a step-dad who was amazing, but it played on my mind not having a father.’

At first, the anti-depressants improved his symptoms, but he soon regressed and once again became unable to function.

Six months ago, his mental health has deteriorated to the point that his mother had to intervene, taking him back to her house to recover.

He saw a psychiatrist, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Mr Jones coaches 250 children at his health club. He says being honest about his psychological problems allowed his employer to support him

Mr Jones appeared on Sky News speaking about men’s health, as part of charity Movember’s campaign in 2014. He wants to continue raising awareness about

It was a relief to be diagnosed, and Mr Jones was immediately prescribed lithium, a mood stabiliser.

‘Six months on I’m back at work, I’m back playing tennis,’ he said.

‘My mood is stable. I can handle life again. I’m functioning. I can look after my children. I can make plans for the future.’

We need to teach men to be in touch with their feelings so they don’t spiral out of control. It’s not a sign of weakness

Oli Jones, 33

He was always honest with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) about his mental health problems, which in retrospect he is extremely glad about as it allowed them to give him support.

This year, they made him a mental health ambassador, and next year the LTA will collaborate with the charity Mind to promote the benefits of physical activity for people’s mental health.

He said: ‘They have been so supportive – as have my colleagues.

‘There are 250 children at our tennis club – someone else took over the admin for me when I couldn’t work.’

‘I’m so honoured to break down the stigma for mental health problems.’

‘If I can save one life my job will be done.’

Million-dollar muscle cars coming to Mecum's Florida auction

American muscle cars are pumping iron when it comes to auction prices.

More than two dozen, some valued upwards of $2 million, will come to the block starting next Friday. They will be part of the Mecum Auctions event in Kissimmee, Fla., which comes billed as the largest collector car and memorabilia auction in the country. About 3,000 cars will be put up for sale.

But it’s the muscle cars that are sure to attracting some of  the most attention — and the big money. How big? Mecum estimates the value of white 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda convertible at least $2.23 million. A 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is estimated at being worth at least $900,000. Many are from a collector, Wayne Schmeeckle, who devoted himself to performance cars built between 1967 and 1971.

It might sound crazy, but Mecum officials are quick to point to recent muscle-car sales to show the kind of money they’re commanding. Another 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda fetched $3.5 million at the Mecum Seattle auction a while back.

The market for muscle cars is “stable,” says John Kraman, consignment director for Mecum. They “represent the ultimate of what was happening at the peak of the Baby Boomer era…These are the cars that Baby Boomers grew up with and lusted for.”

Among the cars going on the block are some Yenko Chevrolets, like a ’69 Chevy Chevelle. Also there will be a pair of Ford Boss 429 Mustangs, Oldsmobile 442s, and a four-speed Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T.

“It has become a must-go collector car auction,” says Kraman.

Latest models roll into Stampede Park for annual motorcycle show

The Motorcycle Show is on at the BMO Centre this weekend and industry experts say they are seeing more women take an interest in riding than ever before and vendors are taking notice of the trend.

This year’s event features the latest gear, apparel and line-up of 2016 motorcycles, ATVs and scooters.

“This is the major manufacturer of new product launch each year and 2016 models, we have two wheels, three wheels, four wheels, because not everyone wants to just ride a motorcycle. There’s side-by-sides, there’s the new trikes,” said Laurie Paetz, Show Manager. “There really are motorcycles from training size right up to avid riders and lots to do for the entire family.”

For years, men were the predominant buyers of motorcycles and even now only 14 percent of riders are women but that’s still almost double what is was 15 years ago.

Women are the fastest growing demographic in the motorcycle industry but many bike companies don’t design or market their offerings to tailor to women.

A Calgary company is working to change that and is building bikes specifically for women riders.

Torch Motorcycles is run by women who say changes to things like seat style and handlebar placement can make them safer and more fun for women to ride.

“Your seat is your main contact point with the bike so that needs to be comfortable, you’re not going to ride very long if you’re not very comfortable on it. We’ve noticed with grip strength that a lot of women’s hands are smaller than men and if they can’t reach their brake and their clutch they are not going to feel very comfortable riding, if they can’t safely reach to brake in time in an emergency situation that’s not safe at all so we are going to adjust things like that on these bikes,” said Elle West from Torch Motorcycles.

“Structurally, the biggest differences are where your main interfaces are with the bike. So you’re primary interface is your seat and so there are great differences around how that seat should be designed so that it fits a female pelvis, but in addition, to where that seat fits in relation to the ground. And the reason that’s important is that, if your feet don’t touch the ground, you can’t control your bike no matter how strong you are, no matter how confident you are, you have to touch the ground so that’s the primary challenge with women fitting bikes that are built for men,” said Becky Wheat, Engineer, Torch Motorcycles.

The show runs through to Sunday, click HERE for tickets and more information.

The 10 Best Performances in American Idol History

Most Popular

Oh, American Idol. After 13 years and 15 seasons you’re finally leaving us. And, let’s be real, it’s time. However, you don’t last a decade and a half in modern TV without becoming a cultural touchstone in the process. During its heyday, Idol was one of the most talked-about and widely debated shows—perhaps if only because of the hilarious, mean, and downright genius criticism from former judge Simon Cowell.

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

With Idol wrapping up its final season’s two-night premiere tonight (8 P.M. ET on Fox), we thought it only right to look back at the 10 best performances from the show’s storied run. From its first winner, Kelly Clarkson, to breakout stars Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson, there’s certainly been no shortage of monumental displays of talent on the Idol stage.

10. Colton Dixon, “Piano Man”

Most Popular

This season 11 contestant parlayed his Idol fame into a respectable following within the Christian rock scene. But before his seventh-place exit, Dixon was an intriguing if not occasionally emo slice of musical wonderment. Watch as he adds some contemporary, alternative flair to Billy Joel’s classic piano bar, drown-your-sorrows sing-along.

9. Lee Dewyze, “Hallelujah”

Okay, so this former paint salesman’s career didn’t exactly take off following his stint on Idol, but Dewyze did unleash some iconic performances during season 9. His most memorable? Undoubtedly this soulful take on singing-competition staple “Hallelujah.”

8. Carrie Underwood, “Alone”

It’s still amazing to see just how far Carrie Underwood has come since taking the Idol title in 2005. Back then, well before the six Grammy wins, the small-town country girl was still a bit rough around the edges—in a good way. Her cover of Heart’s “Alone” was not only a season 4 highlight, but a performance many of her megafans still revisit today.

7. Joshua Ledet, “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

Made-for-TV talent shows can lead fans to believe that a contestant possesses more talent than he or she actually does. But every so often, there are contestants like season 12’s unsung hero, Joshua Ledet, who didn’t even make it to the finale. Randy Jackson called the soul singer’s performance of “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” “one of the best performances in the history of any singing show.”

6. Phillip Phillips, “Volcano”

Most Popular

We’ll admit it: Back when Phillip Phillips was a season 11 contestant, we couldn’t help but feel as if we were back on the DMB summer circuit. But then the Georgia boy pulled out a wild card in the form of  Damien Rice’s “Volcano.” Sure, Phillips’ relationship with Idol hasn’t been exactly smooth of late, but even he can’t deny it was Idol (and performances like this one) that first put him on the map.

5. Jennifer Hudson, “Circle of Life”

True Idol fans are still ticked off that J. Hud didn’t take the season 3 crown—and with good reason. Showings like this rendition of Elton John’s Lion King belter “Circle of Life” not only gave us goose bumps but also showed that Hudson had true star potential. She may not have won Idol, but we’re pretty sure an Oscar and a Grammy look pretty damn good on her mantel.

4. Kris Allen, “Heartless”

In one of the biggest shockers in American Idol history, season 8 underdog Allen catapulted himself into contention for the crown with a folksy take on Kanye West’s “Heartless.” So powerful, in fact, was this performance, that the following week Allen went on to upset Adam Lambert in the finale.

3. Kelly Clarkson, “You Make Me Feel”

Hard to believe, but it’s been 13 years since Kelly Clarkson fought off Justin Guarini to win the inaugural American Idol crown. It was downright obvious from the get-go, though, that the Texan powerhouse was the real deal. Check out her mammoth spin on “You Make Me Feel” from season 1. You can almost hear Guarini conceding.

2. Adam Lambert, “Mad World”

Lambert certainly isn’t the only Idol contestant to have lost the competition and gone on to great commercial success, but he may very well be the one with the most raw talent ever to do so. It seemed like every week the octave-defying singer was one-upping his previous performance. To that end, there are several Lambert performances we could have chosen here, but for our money his rendition of “Mad World” was the most memorable.

1. Katharine McPhee, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

Say what you will about Smash or even Scorpion, but this season 5 contestant first entered our lives as an innocent, angelic-voiced beauty vying for our Idol votes. And wow, what a rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” Katharine McPhee’s truly is. It’s so wonderful, in fact, that we had no choice but to place it as the #1 Idol performance of all time. Let the debating begin!

OKADA PROTEST: Police arrest 8, impound motorcycles

* ‘Protest over before they  arrested us’

By Perez Brisibe

UGHELLI—EIGHT commercial motorcycle operators, Okada riders, where arrested yesterday in Ughelli while several motorcycles where impounded by policemen attached to the Ughelli Area command following protest over the increase of local government’s daily tickets price to N150.

The protest, which began on Monday, took a dramatic twist yesterday when protesters clashed with members of the task force in charge of ticket sales in the area.

Commuters within the town resorted to trekking several kilometres to their destination as the Okada riders refused to convey passengers in solidarity with their colleagues, who barricaded major junctions in the town.

A senior police officer told Vanguard that they defied the protest ban imposed in the state by the Commissioner of Police, hence the arrest.

However, one of the protesters, Samson Diabala, told Vanguard that they had long stopped protesting and were being harassed by the task force at the Post Office Roundabout when the police, in company of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, attacked them and arrested several of their colleagues after impounding their motorcycles.

Men's Retailers Predict Fall '16 Footwear Trends

Dolce-Gabbana-mens-spring-2016-collection-milan

With the men’s fall ’16 fashion month kicking off in London on January 8—followed by Milan, Paris and New York—one can expect a new bevy of footwear trends to surface. Will the sneaker craze prevail? Will designers turn to dressier designs? We turned to luxury retailers to ask what their predictions will be for the season.

Below, men’s retailers sound off on what to expect for fall ’16:

Emmanuel de Bayser, co-owner and buyer, The Corner Berlin:

“I see less sneakers and more dressy or creative shoes—new takes on loafers and boots. If there are sneakers, they will be less bulky and heavy.”

Bally Spring Bally’s spring ’16 lace-up hiking-style boot. Courtesy of brand.

Bruce Pask, men’s fashion director, Bergdorf Goodman:

“We have seen in recent seasons a rapidly growing interest in the role and importance of accessories in menswear on the runways, with houses like Valentino, Givenchy, Berluti, and Gucci giving shoes and leather goods as much focus as their ready to wear. I anticipate this excitement about accessories to continue.

Athletic styles continue to perform and the offerings are expanding accordingly. We are seeing a general turn toward cleaner, more streamlined styles but we still get excited when we see innovative design applied to sneakers.

Dress shoes are still very important [in] our assortment, and are certainly a mainstay in a man’s wardrobe. Beautiful hand burnished patinas in non-traditional yet neutral colors, like grey and navy. I see this continuing, with new offerings in business appropriate tonalities of color as well as singular brogeuing details.

Formal shoes also offer a category that has seen a lot of recent interest and it’s ripe for experimentation with materials. At the beginning of this season I’ve already seen quite a bit of attention paid to fabrics and leathers that are giving shoes and sneakers great surface interest, with felted wool and pony early standouts.

Stephanie Moor, men’s buyer, Level Shoe District:

“I hope to see brands widen their men’s collections further, adding new categories as well as styles with a unique twist to meet the growing demand of a more adventurous male clientele. Season on season men’s footwear becomes more experimental as designers play with bold colours and materials, and I have no doubt this will continue into fall ’16.

A key focus will stay on sneakers. More brands will diversify into this category and designers will look to elevate their sneakers even more. Already in the pre-collections we have seen brands take sneakers to the next level, from Maison Margiela’s metallic soles to Buscemi’s iconic 100mm high-top in full alligator.

Dior MenDior Homme’s spring ’16 black leather lace-ups with hiker-style fastenings and a rubber sole. Courtesy of brand.

Classic styles will remain important, and we hope to see designers offering a stronger formal and tuxedo collection for the winter season to appeal to classic man. I’m on the lookout for traditional styles with a contemporary twist.”

Eric Jennings, VP and fashion director of menswear, home & beauty, Saks Fifth Avenue:

“As more and more men get dressed by starting with their shoes, men’s shoes will continue to lead the market with innovation and creativity. Sneakers will only continue to get bigger. Trust me on this one! Designers will focus on dressier sneaker styles and less on dressier dress shoes. There will be more experimentation but less embellishments and less ‘flashiness.’ Rich Texture, robust color, handsome burnishing.”

Men's Health: Dark Pigmentation In Male Genitalia Linked To Melanin, Medical Conditions

Ever wonder why your penis is darker than the rest of your body? It’s not just in your head: Whether your skin is black, white, or somewhere in between, genitalia and areolas naturally darken during puberty — “an effect of hormones,” Dr. Shaunak Patel, a dermatologist from iCliniq, told Medical Daily.

When males go through puberty, their body produces more of the sex hormones adrenal and androgen. Androgen is responsible for secondary sexual characteristics, like facial and body hair; it also presents skin pigmentation. This happens when androgen responds to melanocytes, or the skin cells that produce melanin; resulting in a darker-looking groin and scrotum. As for our mouth and genital areas, the lips produce more pheomelanin — a reddish pigment found in redheads. This suggests that by simply looking redder, genitals also look darker.

Aside from puberty, another factor that can influence pigmentation, especially in the groin and scrotum, is friction. Dr. Lindsey Bordone, a dermatologist in the department of dermatology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in New York, told Medical Daily: “Skin thickens with chronic friction, so if there is chafing in an area, then over time a person will notice the skin has a tougher texture with mild darkening.”

There are several medical conditions that can contribute to darker male genitalia, too. A hormonal or sugar imbalance — as seen in those with diabetes — can produce more pigment, according to Patel. Obesity can also produce dark skin in several areas, like the thighs and genitals, due to progressive rubbing of the skin. Lesser known conditions, like acanthosis nigricans, can lead to darkening of the skin on the back of the neck, the groin, and the armpits, according to the Mayo Clinic.

While a darker pigment is expected to be seen in the genitals, Patel does warn that “unusual blackish darkening could be an early indication for gangrene (Fourier’s gangrene), or any thrombus obstructing the end arteries in the area.”

So, if you see something unusual down there, it’s best to consult your physician for further examination.

Cheap Gasoline Helps Boost American Car Sales to Record Highs

Washington Post: U.S. Car Sales Hit Record High in 2015

Drivers in the United States bought more cars last year than ever before, a staggering turnaround for an auto industry fighting for its life half a decade ago, as low gas prices and a strengthening economy marked a banner year on American roads.

About 17.5 million cars and trucks were sold last year, automakers said Tuesday, overtaking the 17.3 million sales in 2000 and far outpacing the 10.4 million sales in 2009, when taxpayers paid billions to bail out the bedrock of America’s automotive might.

PV Magazine: Frustration of German PV Subsidies

Funding for battery storage for small solar PV systems in Germany ceased at the end of 2015. The federal government is said to still be working on the new program, which should start “as early as possible in 2016” and end in 2018. Exactly when and how the support will work is still anyone’s guess, however.

A ministry spokesperson confirmed to PV Magazine that the time gap between the two programs should be kept to a minimum. No other details could be shared, however, although the ministry has said the new funding round is expected to end in 2018. Exact conditions will only be published in the wake of the funding announcement.

The Guardian: BA Blames U.K. Government for Scrapping of £340M Green Fuels Project

British Airways says that it has been forced to shelve a groundbreaking £340M scheme to create 16M gallons of jet fuel from London’s rubbish every year, partly due to a lack of government support.

The Green Sky project was due to open in 2017 at an ex-oil refinery in Thurrock, Essex, where it would have turned into gas 575,000 tonnes of household waste that would otherwise have been landfilled or incinerated.

Enough green fuel would have been produced to power all BA’s yearly flights from London City airport twice over, with carbon savings equivalent to taking 150,000 cars off the road.

New York Times: Bitter Debate Over Nuclear Power Simmers in Rural South Korea

In 2010, the 399 mostly older people who made up the population of three villages agreed to give up their land and their centuries-old way of life to make room for something few other places wanted: a nuclear power plant.

That act plunged the surrounding Yeongdeok County into a bitter debate over whether the plant would be a savior or a death knell. The clash also revealed the depth of despair in South Korea’s increasingly empty rural communities, as well as growing misgivings about the country’s heavy dependence on nuclear power.

LA Times Op-Ed: China’s Electric Car Lesson

In January 2014, China sold only 600 so-called new energy vehicles — predominantly electric cars. In December 2014, China sold more than 15,000 EVs as local governments scrambled to meet fleet mandates. In November of last year, China sold more than 25,000 electric cars — more than twice as many as the U.S. (Of course, China’s overall auto market is also larger: In 2014, China sold about 24 million vehicles compared with the United States’ 17 million.)

Washington provides a sad, sharp contrast. After binge spending on EVs during the 2009 stimulus, the federal government retrenched. It eliminated most of its expenditures on EV technology and practically zeroed out funding for charging infrastructure. Washington’s conversation on electric cars has degenerated into partisan squabble.

On-screen bikers - Who rides motorcycles in real life

Motorcycles on the big and small screen bring an additional interest for riders whether watching the latest action blockbuster or a favorite series.

But does that action star or well-known face roaring across the scene actually ride off-screen as well? Clutch and Chrome rode through a sea of entertainment to find actors and actresses who shared top-billing with a motorcycle on-screen only to continue that passion when the cameras stopped rolling.

There are a multitude of motorcycle articles about celebrities who ride motorcycles in their own time. This article will focus on those who ride motorcycles on-screen and also enjoy some saddle time when not in front of the camera.

Clutch and Chrome won’t use this opportunity to debate whether the star in question actually rode the motorcycle in a movie or television show. As far as that question is concerned, the more prominent an actor or actress is in a movie or television series, the less likely they’ll actually sit in the saddle for any onscreen action. Directors and producers can’t afford a motorcycle mishap sidelining their star and companies that insure productions certainly won’t allow it.

So, who fakes it and who doesn’t?

Looking first to actresses who famously rode onscreen, Mara Rooney took the role of biker to an intense destination when she starred as Lisbeth Salander in the latest version of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Adapted from the famous and dark crime novel by the Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson, the movie had Rooney roaring from grey place to greyer place uncovering clues.

According to an interview with CinemaBlend in 2011, Rooney was as unconventional as the role she played. Not only did the actress need to learn how to smoke and handle a skateboard but was also sent to Stockholm ahead of production to learn how to ride a motorcycle.

“The motorcycle was definitely the thing that I was least excited about doing,” Rooney told CinemaBlend, “It just seemed dangerous to me.”

While the actress rode the motorcycle in many of the shots seen on-screen, Rooney’s comments leave us to believe she wasn’t bitten by the biker-bug.

Mara Rooney as seen in ‘Girl with a Dragon Tattoo’

The same can’t be said for Angelina Jolie. Appearing on motorcycles as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movie series and again in Salt when she played a Russian double agent, Jolie was reportedly a seasoned rider long before the a director shouted ‘action’.

And it was all for love.

When Jolie and Brad Pitt started dating, the actress, producer and philanthropist took an interest in his passion, riding motorcycles. Some of the more interesting pictures to be found on the internet show Jolie and Pitt heading out on a desert road with a pair of BMW Motorrad dual purpose motorcycles.

Aside from the cluttered calendar the sexiest woman alive must surely keep and family commitments she enjoys, we’re sure the motorcycle passions still ride with Angelina Jolie

Speaking of off-road motorcycles, this was the choice of the most famous spy of them all, James Bond and his appearance in the 2012 ‘Skyfall’ movie. In the popular Bond film, Daniel Craig’s spy of spies rides a Honda CRF250R bike in the opening sequence chase scene that was filmed in Turkey.

While he’s the first to admit to staying away from the stunts, Craig appears to enjoy his motorcycle time off-camera. Pictures taken by paparazzi in 2014 of Craig at a Ducati Triumph dealership in New York City hints the British actor not only enjoys some saddle time, but it’s of a classic nature.

Clutch and Chrome will stay with the British thespians for a moment and shift gears to the small screen. When creators of the popular television show ‘House M.D.’ wanted the lead character to have the appearance of someone who pushed the envelope, they put him on a sportsbike. He rides a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade throughout the show and at one point test rides an Aprilia RSV1000R.

Hiring a British actor who was more known for his comedic appearance than any dramatic roles undertaken, Hugh Laurie easily made the lead role of the successful medical drama his own. Not only does Gregory House, M.D know his cutting edge medicine, the good doctor likes power in his motorcycles.

However, what’s seen on-screen and what the actor enjoys off-screen are night and day. Laurie used a 2004 Triumph Bonneville, a motorcycle he referred to as ‘an absolute classic’ for his commute while staying in Los Angeles during the filming of the series which ended in 2012.

What about roles that are truly out of this world? Two actors who are as well known for their good looks as they are the spectacular roles that feature their names, Chris Evans and Chris Pine have co-starred with motorcycles as superheroes, starship captains and secret agents.

Actor Chris Evans played the Human Torch in Marvel’s first movie version of the Fantastic Four and Captain America in several highly successful cinema franchises. In both of those roles Evans found himself on Harley-Davidson’s. From living life on the edge as the Human Torch to battling generations of enemies as Captain America so it would be easy to assume Evans has a stable of motorcycles parked in the garage.

Not so.

“I’m not a motorcycle guy,” Evans told the Daily Mirror while promoting ‘Captain America-The Winter Soldier’ in 2014, “I’d rather jump on a horse than ride a bike. I did it and it was fine, but it’s just not for me.”

Captain America and his Harley-Davidson Street 750 – Source Harley-Davidson

While Clutch and Chrome can’t verify whether Chris Pine owns his own motorcycle, everything indicates he’s a little more enthusiastic about riding than his fellow Chris. This actors on-screen saddle time has included a Ducati in the spy thriller ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ and something out of this world in both ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Trek Beyond’.

The actor told MTV News that he did “a lot” of his own stunt work for ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’, including some dangerous maneuvering on a motorcycle at speeds up to 50 mph.

“I think the most fun I had was riding this motorcycle in and out of the traffic in New York, which was frightening but a lot of fun,” he said.

Made with a much smaller budget but certainly more motorcycle screen time, the 2008 Canadian drama ‘One Week’ saw familiar face Joshua Jackson riding a 1973 Norton Commando riding across Canada. Science Fiction fans may remember Jackson from his leading role in the FOX hit ‘Fringe’ but this film was much more grounded with the character taking a road trip on the news he has an aggressive form of cancer in its fourth and final stage.

Although it’s a somber storyline for a motorcycle movie, Jackson has been seen on much lighter rides around Los Angeles on his Triumph motorcycle putting him in the definite ‘yes’ column of two-wheeled time off screen as well as on it.

Moving from Science Fiction and Canada to an actor seen in the fantasy world of ‘Game of Thrones’. While Jason Momoa may be famous for his role of Khal Drogo, a more recent movie appearance was that of a biker in the 2014 movie ‘The Road to Paloma’. Directed, produced, co-written by and starring Momoa, the motorcycle featured in the movie was actually built by the familiar actor.

With Momoa comparing the making of the movie to that of building a custom motorcycle, where both need a small, trusted group of close friends to be done successfully, it’s fair to say this actor is a diehard biker.

There are few actors who have created an interest in a motorcycle brand as Arnold Schwarzenegger did with Harley-Davidson’s Fat Boy. The chosen ride of the ‘Terminator’ in the second edition of the famous series, the motorcycle was the best known co-star in ‘Judgement Day’, from the spectacular jump to shooting a shotgun from the saddle.

For an actor so strongly associated with motorcycles, it’s surprising how few Schwarzenegger movies feature our favorite two-wheeled past time. However, what he lacks on screen the Austrian born actor makes up for off-screen. Schwarzenegger was a familiar sight around Los Angeles riding mostly solo but with an occasional sidecar. It was with his son in the sidecar in 2006 when the Governor Schwarzenegger rode into troubling headlines after an accident revealed the actor didn’t have a motorcycle license.

We’re sure the license issue was fixed and can confirm the famous 1990 Fat Boy seen in ‘Terminator 2’ was acquired for the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

Four famous actors rode out Disney’s 2007 hit ‘Wild Hogs’ with Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy playing middle-aged men who take a cross-country road trip to relieve the boredom in their lives. But what sort of experience did the actors have and do they still ride?

According to reports, John Travolta was an experienced rider who was comfortable with Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Tim Allen rode sport bikes before the production of Wild Hogs, but never sat in the saddle of a cruiser. Both William Macy and Martin Lawrence were completely new to riding.

To train the actors with their new rides ‘Wild Hogs’ stunt coordinator Jack Gill started the crew out on dirt bikes, graduating them to riding cruisers around the twisting roads of Malibu Canyon.

So who still rides?

Tim Allen is a big gear head and reportedly loves anything with an engine, including motorcycles. Allen last made headlines in 2014 with his purchase of Brawler GT-R performance cruiser built by Dar Holdsworth and the crew at Brass Balls Cycles.

Out of the four actors, John Travolta started with the highest motorcycle profile, famously appearing in a Honda motorcycle commercial in the early seventies. However, being an avid pilot it appears Travolta spends more time in the air than he does out on the open road.

Another actor who left the motorcycle passion on the screen is Martin Lawrence. Outside of promoting the movie itself, Clutch and Chrome couldn’t find any references to Lawrence jumping back in the saddle.

William H Macy on the other hand became a born-again biker after ‘Wild Hogs’. When younger, Macy rode a scooter while in college and found the adjustment to larger cruisers when filming ‘Wild Hogs’ a little difficult at first.

“They’re big motorcycles, but Lordy, what a feeling,” Macy said in an interview at the time, “Only people who have ridden understand that feeling of freedom and lawlessness and living on the edge. I am seriously hooked!”

Indeed, at the time he regretted not asking to keep the motorcycle at the end of shooting. However, interviews as recent as 2015 had him discussing motorcycle road trips which can only be taken as a good sign.

Fun fact, actress Jill Hennessy, who plays Tim Allen’s wife in ‘Wild Hogs’ is a motorcycle enthusiast herself.

Promotional poster for Wild Hogs

Looking to the small screen again, ‘Sons of Anarchy’ uses the motorcycle and the riding culture as the background for the runaway series seen on FX from 2008 to 2014. The cutting edge drama followed a motorcycle gang in a fictional California town with the cast portraying hard-riding bikers.

Those who couldn’t ride when joining the show soon learned and many carried on the riding passion off-screen. Many actors make appearances at motorcycle events and ride with fans.

There is one well-known name that hasn’t been bitten by the biker bug however, Ron Perlman. This was confirmed by actress Maggie Siff, who plays tough doctor Tara Knowles when speaking to USA Today in 2012.

“Isn’t that funny?” Siff notes, “The toughest guy in the show, and he’s not all about riding. But he’s so tough, you’d never guess.”

Clutch and Chrome mentioned his better half earlier in this article, Brad Pitt is as famous for his passion around motorcycles as he is for his unique and varied roles. But for all his love of riding, the famous actor only has one notable on-screen appearance in the saddle, the memorable shot of Brad Pitt riding a classic Indian Scout in the ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’.

On the opposite end of Brad Pitt’s motorcycle screen time is Tom Cruise. He loves motorcycles so much it’s hard to know exactly how many Cruise owns and even better, he takes that enthusiasm to many of the movies he appears in.

From the iconic scene of ‘Maverick’ racing a F14 Navy jet in ‘Top Gun’, Cruise is seen racing across the screen on a variety of motorcycles in ‘Days of Thunder’, ‘Knight and Day’, ‘Oblivion’, ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and most of the ‘Mission Impossible’ films. Its makes one wonder if Cruise writes these two-wheeled appearances into every movie contract.

It certainly isn’t from the lack of motorcycles parked in his garage. As mentioned, it’s hard to know exactly how many motorcycles he owns, but just by picking through headlines over the last ten years Clutch and Chrome counted the most powerful production motorcycle in the world, a Vyrus 987 C3 4V, literally the first Ducati Desmosedici RR to arrive in the US and a Confederate Hellcat F131.

We’ll leave this look at stars who ride their motorcycle passion on and off the screen with the man of the post-apocalyptic moment.

Riding through a zombie filled-world, ‘The Walking Dead’ viewers were introduced to a character played by Norman Reedus which would become one of the show’s more popular survivors. Leather-wearing, chopper riding Daryl Dixon never appeared in the comic book series the hugely successful television show was based on. Instead, the character was created by writers Frank Darabont, Charles H. Eglee and Jack LoGiudice specifically for Reedus. Reportedly the actor gave such a great audition for the role of Merle Dixon the writers created an additional character for him.

But does he ride?

The answer to this is as interesting as the show itself. Actor Norman Reedus is such an avid biker he pointed Walking Dead producers to Classified Moto motorcycle builders for a new ride to be featured on ‘The Walking Dead’. The builders had built a custom motorcycle for Norman Reedus some months before.

In a man's world

Youssra Zguaoua is the first woman to work as crew on a Dakhla fishing vessel in what is traditionally an entirely male working environment.

Pelagic trawler Midoy Dakhla 1, which operates from Dakhla in Western Sahara, is a unique ship with two female trainees on board. One is Hind, who is a Saharaui, and 23-year-old Youssra Zguaoua comes from the Mediterranean port of Al Hoceima in northern Morocco.

She has become the first woman to work as crew on a Dakhla fishing vessel in what is traditionally an entirely male working environment.

Fishing News International had the opportunity to speak to Youssra Zguaoua between trips. She grew up in the city of Meknes before she moved to Laayoune in Western Sahara at the age of eight when her father’s job took the family to the south.

She is an engineering graduate from the Technological Institute of Maritime Fisheries in Laayoune, which is where her interest in working in fishing began.

Youssra1(2)“Several friends wondered how I decided to become a fishing vessel engineer, but I was curious to find out more about the lives of people working at sea.

“I saw it as a big challenge because I wanted to show that women with my background also could work within a male-dominated environment,” she said.

“Engineering is the basis of modern technology, especially heavy industry. Among other things, at the institute we studied general mechanics, electricity, welding, electronics, electrical, refrigeration, industrial drawing, technical management, first aid, rescue and fire safety.”

“Once I became the first woman to receive this diploma, it became very difficult to engage with the maritime sector. After four months of job searching, I was accepted on a longliner with 36 crew. The skipper refused me to work in the engine room, so I had to work on the bridge.

“To put it mildly I was shocked to see the working conditions. The boat was short of all kinds of equipment and there would have been serious problems if there had been a fire or an emergency on board.”

“The trips could last more than 20 days. I realised on the first day that it was not going to be easy – and it was absolutely awful, not least due to the extremely rigid mentality towards women. Hygiene conditions were miserable, with poor accommodation and no shower on board.”

In spite of the difficulties, Youssra Zguaoua stayed with the job for four months until an opportunity to join Sjovik Morocco’s pelagic trawler Midoy Dakhla 1 arose.

She explained that she had written to the Ministry of Fisheries, making the point that while comprehensive training is available, there is a disconnect between study and work if it is almost impossible for a graduate to find work. The place as a trainee on Midoy Dakhla 1 was arranged via the Ministry.Youssra8 (2)

“Being able to work on Midoy Dakhla 1 is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into how it is to work on board a trawler with high standards.

“Since I am a beginner, I like to see the trawler as a noble house welcoming me, and I like it here. Obviously, the maritime sector is highly male-dominated.

“At the same time, one can say that it is the technology that gives the woman entry to participate in this area because the technology requires less physical efforts. Intelligence plays an important role in maintaining the position of a woman in a team of men.

“For my part, I remain a woman regardless of surroundings. At the institute I was the only woman and I have been alone as a woman among fishermen for more than two years,” she said.

“Because I’m Moroccan, I have to accept the behaviour pattern of my country’s fishermen; I mean knowing the views of every man who works together with me.Youssra5(2)

“At the same time I would like to stress that I do not deny that there also are many men who are open-minded and friendly people who understand and can accept a woman as a new partner on the team. On the other hand, it is a reality that the majority do not accept these things,” she said and added that coping with sexual harassment is the greatest challenge.

“Another difficulty is the lack of trust and the problem of gaining support for suggestions from women. In most areas there are many men are unable to accept that the women also have brains and are able to think for themselves,” she added with conviction.

Tradition and religion frequently cause complex situations that have the potential to prevent development, not just in Morocco, but across the Middle East. According to Youssra Zguaoua, a significant problem is that there are many who choose to respect tradition rather than religion.

Youssra4under logoen til Sjovik © Ola Sletten (2)“If a man accepts a woman within a skilled workplace, that person thinks he is civilised, which is something I have to accept. Then I have also been told that it is forbidden that women work alongside men. In the background of  different opinions I just have to accept attitudes of colleagues with whom I deeply disagree.”

“Actually I work in a group made up of 90% Moroccan men. Sometimes there are colleagues who give me orders and there can be friction – primarily because I’m a woman.

She said she prefers to deal with this issue herself, and that’s why she doesn’t like to take her problems to her superiors, but she admits it isn’t easy for a Moroccan women to be fully respected.

Midoy Dakhla 1 is a well-equipped trawler with all the necessary safety equipment on board, and at Sjovik Morocco I have found what I had not experienced at other workplaces – a professional crew providing professional advice. It was a pleasant surprise to work with a crew who appreciate that a woman can also take part in work on a fishing vessel,” she said.

“For us it is important that businesses we are involved in, also abroad, are conducted in accordance with the company’s ethical standards, which among other things, gender equality is central,” said Sjovik deputy CEO Daniel Sjøvik.

“It’s great that one of our female employees aboard Midoy Dakhla 1 is happy to have been treated with equal respect by her Norwegian counterparts. The work of transferring company policy to the local crew and the staff is extremely important.”

Internet Security: Cryptographic Principles, Algorithms and Protocols

Knowledge of number theory and abstract algebra are pre–requisites for any engineer designing a secure internet–based system. However, most of the books currently available on the subject are aimed at practitioners who just want to know how the various tools available on the market work and what level of security they impart. These books traditionally deal with the science and mathematics only in so far as they are necessary to understand how the tools work. Internet Security differs by its assertion that cryptography is the single most important technology for securing the Internet. To quote one reviewer “if every one of your communication partners were using a secure system based on encryption, viruses, worms and hackers would have a very hard time”. This scenario does not reflect the reality of the Internet world as it currently stands. However, with security issues becoming more and more important internationally, engineers of the future will be required to design tougher, safer systems. Internet Security: aeo Offers an in–depth introduction to the relevant cryptographic principles, algorithms protocols — the nuts and bolts of creating a secure network aeo Links cryptographic principles to the technologies in use on the Internet, eg. It's 'Bike Week' in Vegas with two major motorcycle auctions

Bikes and bidders aplenty at MecumBikes and bidders aplenty at Mecum’s MidAmerica motorcycle sale last year in Las Vegas | Mecum Auctions photos

In October, the Hagerty Price Guide added 9,200 vehicles to its valuation tools website. But they were neither classic cars nor collectible pickup trucks. They were motorcycles, built between 1894 and 1996 by 61 different manufacturers.

“Motorcycles are one of the fastest-growing segments in the collectible vehicle market,” McKeel Hagerty, chief executive of the family-owned insurance and valuation company, said in a news release at the time.

“The recent interest is inspiring enthusiasts to pull their bikes out of long-term storage to enjoy again and share with the next generation.”

And to offer up for sale at auctions, as we’ll see January 6-9 when the 2016 collector vehicle auction calendar opens with two major motorcycle sales in Las Vegas, where Mecum Auctions stages its 25th annual MidAmerica’s Las Vegas bike sale and where Bonhams hosts its yearly offering of classic two-wheelers.

“From a collecting standpoint, motorcycles are very approachable because many can be purchased for less than $10,000,” Hagerty noted, “and they take up very little space in your garage.”

Hagerty reported that the number of motorcycles offered at auctions nearly doubled in the past year and the demand for vintage motorcycles among collectors has grown by 50 percent so far this decade.

Hagerty’s research found the most paid for a collectible motorcycle was the $1.62 million spent at a Profiles in History auction in 2014 for the “Captain America” Harley-Davidson Panhard from the Easy Rider movie. However, it estimates that the 1903 Harley-Davidson Single, of which only one is known to exist and housed within the Harley-Davidson museum in Milwaukee, is worth $15 million.

As if to validate Hagerty’s comments, several major collectors are sending motorcycles to the Mecum MidAmerica auction at the South Point casino and exhibit hall.

“We’re honored to offer this year’s consignments at our 25th anniversary auction,” Ron Christenson, president of the Mecum MidAmerica Motorcycle division, said in a news release. “The consignment list as a whole, as well as the individual collections we’ll be offering, are top-quality collectibles that any enthusiast would be thrilled to own. Bringing them all together in one place is a dream come true.”

Among the 700 or so motorcycles at the auction are those coming from 13 private collections, including 38 being shipped all the way from Allen Smith’s collection in Australia.

Featured lots include:

  • A 1912 Henderson Four, one of the few still in existence

  • A 1951 Harley-Davidson WRTT

  • A 1908 Harley-Davidson Strap Tank, barn-found in 1941 and kept by its finder for the following 66 years

  • A 1957 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL with the lowest serial number known among surviving ’57 Sportsters

  • A 1918 Harley-Davison board track racer

  • A 1986 Suzuki RG/RS 500 Gamma, a bike not sold new in the U.S. market

  • A 1942 Harley-Davidson WLA military motorcycle, unrestored and still with its original paint

  • A 1926 Harley-Davidson board-track racer, unrestored and from the Gary Hite collection

  • A 1929 Harley-Davidson JD, formerly from the E.J. Cole collection

The auction preview begins Thursday morning with sales starting late that afternoon and again Friday and Saturday morning.

Bonhams starts its preview at Bally’s hotel and casino at 9 a.m. Wednesday with sales of some 250 vintage motorcycles Thursday starting at 11 a.m.

Headlining the sale are Steve McQueen’s Triumph “desert sled,” the only red 1951 Vincent White Shadow ever built and a Harley-Davidson factory-team oval-track racer.

McQueen’s 1963 Triumph Bonneville desert sled was modified for the movie star by Bud Ekins and painted by Von Dutch. It comes to auction from the Larry Bowman collection. Also from the Bowman collection is the 1929 Harley-Davidson JDH racer formerly raced by Glen Kleckner in the 1920s and later restored by Connie Schlemmer with engine rebuild by Mike Lang, as well as a 1922 Ace Four with sidecar and a 1910 Royal Pioneer single.

Meanwhile, the only Chinese Red White Shadow is being offered for sale for the first time since the early 1980s.

Also on the docket are:

  • A “film-used,” Bud Ekins-built 1976 Harley-Davidson XL 1000 Evel Knievel custom

  • A one-owner since new 1955 Vincent Series D Black Prince

  • An ex-Ed LaBelle 1952 Vincent Black Shadow Special road racer and drag bike

  • A 1926 Indian Daytona factory hillclimber

  • A 1912 Indian board-track racer

  • A 1926 Henderson Four Deluxe with single ownership for nearly 40 years
