American muscle cars are pumping iron when it comes to auction prices.
More than two dozen, some valued upwards of $2 million, will come to the block starting next Friday. They will be part of the Mecum Auctions event in Kissimmee, Fla., which comes billed as the largest collector car and memorabilia auction in the country. About 3,000 cars will be put up for sale.
But it’s the muscle cars that are sure to attracting some of the most attention — and the big money. How big? Mecum estimates the value of white 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda convertible at least $2.23 million. A 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is estimated at being worth at least $900,000. Many are from a collector, Wayne Schmeeckle, who devoted himself to performance cars built between 1967 and 1971.
It might sound crazy, but Mecum officials are quick to point to recent muscle-car sales to show the kind of money they’re commanding. Another 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda fetched $3.5 million at the Mecum Seattle auction a while back.
The market for muscle cars is “stable,” says John Kraman, consignment director for Mecum. They “represent the ultimate of what was happening at the peak of the Baby Boomer era…These are the cars that Baby Boomers grew up with and lusted for.”
Among the cars going on the block are some Yenko Chevrolets, like a ’69 Chevy Chevelle. Also there will be a pair of Ford Boss 429 Mustangs, Oldsmobile 442s, and a four-speed Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T.
“It has become a must-go collector car auction,” says Kraman.
