Indian/RSD SuperHooligan Bar-Bangin' Bash on Scout Sixty Flat Trackers

It all went down in a deserted San Pedro warehouse down by the docks. The smolder of burnt rubber filled the air, throttles cracked and unleashed barking exhausts that echoed off the rooftop. The posse of RSD SuperHooligan riders spun tight circles on a short cement oval within an arena of orange and white construction barriers, elbows up, eyes wide. The shrill sound of sirens interrupted the party, a handful of LA’s finest on their black and white motorcycles storming the warehouse. Luckily, they were in on the gig, all part of Indian Motorcycle’s slideshow.


RSD SuperHooligan Races on Indian Scout Sixtys


Some good ol’ fashioned fun was to be had Thursday night at the warehouse races on RSD SuperHooligan Indian Scout Sixtys. 


To celebrate the release of the company’s 2016 Scout Sixty, Indian threw Thursday night’s SoCal shindig. The new Scout Sixty debuted a couple days earlier at the EICMA show in Milan, but this was the first time North American journalists who didn’t make the trip to Italy got a chance to inspect Indian’s new 999cc machine. Better yet, Indian took five of the pre-production Scout Sixtys that were headed to the crusher and gave them to the team at Roland Sands Design to work their magic on. The result is five fire-breathing flat trackers, the first-ever customized Scout Sixtys. The motorcycles are headed to Vegas this weekend to be wrung out on the short track at the Orleans Hotel & Casino for the RSD SuperHooligan races, a fun sideshow to Saturday night’s Superprestigio event. What better way to give them a shakedown than roasting a few laps on a makeshift track inside an old warehouse down by the Port of Los Angeles.


Doing the hooligan honors this night were Roland himself, Drake McElroy, Helder Alvernaz, and The Suicide Machine brothers, Shaun and Aaron Guardado, who helped RSD out by building two of the hooligan racers.


“These bikes I think are really going to bring some new ideas to the table. It’s really like the forward-thinking way to customize. And the way that they work on a flat track is incredible. I mean these things rip, they’re like riding a 450, it’s insane,” said Sands after spinning a few laps.

“One of the things that I think is unique, I don’t think a lot of you guys have seen one disassembled, is the back half of the motorcycle basically unbolts in no time. It really cleans up nice and easy. Tell us, clearly we don’t have stock fenders or subframes on the back end anymore, but tell us a little bit about what you did to modify the bikes to go racing,” said Indian’s External Relations Manager, Robert Pandya.


“19-inch wheels, different risers, we moved the handlebars back and went with wider handlebars, breakaway levers. Took off everything that the bike didn’t absolutely need. We did the tail section. We built a box under the tail section to lift it up. Raised up the shocks, we moved the shock mount back. We built a new, lower pipe, moved the foot controls. We did a belt tensioner. That’s it. There were pretty, I won’t say they were easy to build, but they weren’t that hard to build,” added Sands.


Before the night was over, Sands hinted that we might see some RSD SuperHooligan kits for the Indian Scout in the future. Until then, the RSD SuperHooligan Scouts are headed to Vegas for some bar-banging action with the likes of McElroy and super-stunter Aaron Colton at their helm.

US Confirms American Student Was Among 5 Killed in Israel


The U.S. State Department has confirmed that an American student was among five people killed Thursday in separate Palestinian attacks against Israelis.


Spokesman John Kirby identified him Friday as Ezra Schwartz, 18, of Boston, Massachusetts. He was killed when a Palestinian sprayed a car in which he was riding with bullets near a Jewish settlement.


Five other Americans were hurt.


“The secretary … wishes each of them a full and complete recovery,” Kirby said of Secretary of State John Kerry.


“We condemn in the strongest possible terms these outrageous terrorist attacks,” Kirby added. “These tragic incidents underscore the importance of taking affirmative steps to restore calm.”


In one of the single deadliest days in the two-month surge of Palestinian violence, a Palestinian gunman in a car shot at other cars outside the settlement near Jerusalem and deliberately rammed into other vehicles. Three people, including Schwartz and another Palestinian, were killed.


In Tel Aviv on Thursday, a Palestinian armed with a knife rushed into an office building and stabbed two Israelis to death before bystanders stopped him.


The wave of violence that has left 15 Israelis and at least 86 Palestinians dead began in September when rumors swept Palestinian neighborhoods that Israel was planning to take over an East Jerusalem holy site revered by Muslims and Jews.


Israel has consistently denied the rumors and accuses Palestinian leaders of inciting the violence.

Dorchester Rd. reopens after motorcycle shop fire

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) –

All lanes of Dorchester Road have reopened after firefighters responded to a fire at a motorcycle repair shop. 


Fire and police remain on the scene and are asking drivers to use caution and drive slowly through the area.


Firefighters from North Charleston and Ashley River Fire Departments responded to reports of a structure fire at Vicious Motorcycles at 7860 Dorchester Rd. at 10:38 a.m., according to NCFD spokesperson Bianca Bourbeau.


First arriving units reported black smoke visible from the front of the single story business.


Firefighters were able to contain the fire within the first 10 minutes of the call.


No injuries were reported at the scene. The fire remains under investigation.

What is the soundtrack to our age? Is it drones buzzing overhead? Relentless cellphone yakking? Rattling pill bottles or jackhammering condo construction? No. It’s the sound of splitting seams. And not just because the population is getting fatter—it undeniably is, but that’s not why we are gathered here today. Call it body-conscious bespoke. Call it castration couture. We are here to talk about the current epidemic of hyperfitted, nut-mangling menswear.

It all started when pants and jackets got tighter and shorter—a high-fashion Thom Browne thang—and we all started walking around dressed like über-chic ventriloquists’ dummies. But the shrinking did not stop there. In the past decade, the highly influential Browne effect reached a wider audience. As a result, mainstream men’s clothing has become body-hugging to the point of obscenity. The blousy business shirts of the past century are a distant memory. Those crepe-y, drape-y, boxy suits of yore have long since been cut up and made into pot holders and cleaning rags. For today’s man—but not for Today’s Man, which bit the dust in 2003—snug is the mot-du-jour.

Turn on the telly and what do you see? The guns of Anderson Cooper or Michael Strahan screaming to be liberated from the constricting sleeves of their spiffy suits. Channel surf and you will be confronted with a cavalcade of GI Joe dolls—Andre from Empire, the NFL preshow commentators, even Jimmy Kimmel!—all stuffed into distractingly tight-tailored garments. A flip through November’s GQ yields a sea of men—Thor’s Tom Hiddleston in skin-tight chalk stripes, Gotham’s Cory Michael Smith in constricting corduroys—doing their level best to smile while attired in pancreas-squishing ensembles.* When’s it going to stop? Do we want it to stop? Not especially, but I am curious about what it all means.




Let’s start with a little history lesson. Back in the Renaissance—wars, plagues, and great fashion! … I remember it as if it were yesterday—drape-y clothing was considered a mark of prestige. Adornment with ample, lavish fabric indicated that one had wealth and a high rank. Yes, we wore tights—the first skinny jeans!—but that was just to contrast with the blousy largesse of our capes and doublets. What was to stop poor people enrobing their persons with velvets and brocades? Everything! Special sumptuary laws dished out brutal punishment to those who swagged above their stations.






Sumptuary laws can be explained as follows: If you were posh, these complicated edicts permitted you to do posh things and wear drape-y posh clothes; but if you were a toothless agrarian, you were doomed to wear a skimpy hemp shift. #draughty




And another thing: Drape-y clothing, with its dotted line to biblical times and Greco-Roman deities, not only created the impression that the wearer was high-ranking; it also suggested a high level of spirituality. Hemp-wearers would take one look at your billowing garb and assume you were an avatar, an angel, a saint, or a prophet. Bottom line: You had to be careful back then. If your clothes were très blouson, people would hit you up for money and then expect you to perform bloody miracles.




Whereas loose clothing indicated high rank and lofty thoughts—Moses did not do tight— skimpy garb has, for centuries, telegraphed the exact opposite. Blokes in skinny shark-skin suits were always seen as criminal, sexually promiscuous, downright sleazy, aka fabulous. They wore pinky rings and made their livings facilitating helpful introductions to “exciting” girls named Darlene and Mitzi.

Not everyone is walking around wearing scalpel-cut high-priced bespoke sausage casings. There are, in fact, some very notable holdouts: academics, for example. I live near NYU, so my gaze is constantly being assailed by middle-aged university men dressed in billowing, food-stained moderate sportswear. Best-case scenario, they dress like Saul on Homeland, whose persnickety style I like to call “easy-fit normcore for seniors.” I don’t blame these professors, and I am certainly not lobbying for change. If these Saul look-alikes squeezed themselves into Gucci or Prada lounge suits, nobody would listen to their ideas on quantum physics. The takeaway? Tight, in the wrong context, can jeopardize your cred, to mention nothing of making people think you might have an evening job working as a croupier in a second-string casino.




One final thought regarding sumptuary laws: Might there be a case for bringing them back? They would undoubtedly cut some of that whatever-shall-I-wear, is-my-bum-too-big-for-this dithering that has always afflicted women but now affects men, too. Imagine how simple your life would be if you could say, “Listen! I’m not wearing a magenta, devore, stretch-velvet jumpsuit with a matching cape because I am not allowed to … by law.”

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — With Google’s self-driving cars slowed in a gridlock of California regulation, Texas is offering a fast lane.


Officials in Austin have embraced the technology, a welcome so warm that the mayor used talking points written by a Google lobbyist when the tech titan began testing prototypes on their streets over the summer.


That embrace came as state transportation and safety policymakers are struggling with whether they share Google’s vision of — sooner than later — getting the public access to cars that have neither a steering wheel nor pedals.


For now, Google’s test cars have an employee in the driver’s seat, ready to grab the wheel should the onboard sensors and computers get in trouble. Four retrofitted Lexus cars and four bubble-shaped cars Google commissioned are rolling around Austin, the hub of tech innovation in Texas and the first area Google has done extended testing outside its Silicon Valley base.


Four months into Google’s test drives here, Texas transportation officials appear unsure how to oversee their safe operation. Unlike California, where regulators have been drafting regulatory rules to give the public safe access to the cars, Texas has no obvious restrictions on self-driving vehicles.


And Google wants to keep it that way. The tech titan believes vehicles with just a button to start and stop — and no other way for passengers to maneuver them — would be legal without any change to Texas law.


State officials would not comment on their take, but one legal scholar said Google’s read of state law was not farfetched. “A reasonable interpretation is that an autonomous vehicle would be legal” in Texas, said Bryant Walker Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina.


Officials with Google’s self-driving car project say that while they are frustrated California’s Department of Motor Vehicles is nearly a year late in writing rules for early-adopters in the public to get the technology, the company expanded testing to Austin to challenge the cars in a new environment where drivers and pedestrians are unaccustomed to seeing them.


“Austin has always been enthusiastic about innovation,” said Chris Urmson, who has led Google’s self-driving car project for several years. “The people there have been incredibly welcoming.”


When Mayor Steve Adler said at an August press conference that the cars potentially carry “enormous” benefits to society, he was reading verbatim from a list of talking points drafted by a Google lobbyist in Texas, Gerardo Interiano, according to records obtained by The Associated Press.


A July press release announcing that Google had picked Austin also attributed a quote to Adler that was first drafted by Google, then approved by Adler’s office with only slight tweaks.


“Austin is special in part because we welcome new technologies that could help improve our daily lives, and we can easily see the potential self-driving cars have to reduce accident rates and congestion, and to provide mobility for people who can’t get around easily,” Adler was quoted as saying.


Jason Stanford, a spokesman for Adler, said the mayor was not aware that Google wrote the material sent to his aides. He said Adler and Google “share this vision” of cars that are never driven by drunk or distracted drivers.


A Google spokesman declined to comment on the emails.


Cars without steering wheels and pedals are not close to being commonplace. Google wants to begin introducing them through a small pilot project, hinting last year that could happen as early as 2016. More recently, Google has refused to discuss a firm timetable.


In the meantime, Texas transportation leaders are reluctant to discuss the technology publicly.


The state Department of Motor Vehicles referred questions to the Department of Public Safety, where a spokesman would only say the agency is working with other states without elaborating. Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Veronica Beyer said the agency is waiting on the guidance of lawmakers — but the Texas Legislature doesn’t meet again until 2017.


This spring, Google opposed ultimately unsuccessful legislation that would have set minimum self-driving car safety laws. At a legislative hearing, state transportation officials acknowledged there are no existing restrictions, but one Republican lawmaker did voice some concern.


“I’m not sure the state of Texas needs to be providing, become the test tube for developing this,” state Sen. Troy Fraser said at the April hearing. “The companies are going to have to figure that out, and then once they figure it out, then they come to us and get authorization.”


A signature California company like Google getting cozy with Texas carries an implicit threat: Several companies with high-profile California connections have moved to Texas in recent years, delighting Texans eager to bash California as an overregulated burden to innovative business.


Google said it approached several cities before deciding on Austin. It won’t say which ones, though it appears none was in Nevada — the state where in 2011 Google persuaded the Legislature to create the nation’s first public road testing framework for self-driving cars. At that time, Google’s goal was to get its home state to act. California lawmakers, who worried that Nevada would become a road-testing destination, formally legalized prototype testing in 2012.


Since then, Google hasn’t tested much in Nevada.


The leader of the self-driving issues at the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles said he sees shades of Google’s Nevada play in its decision to test in Texas.


“Let’s see what politically we can strong arm or influence” in terms of Texas policy, said Jude Hurin. “It’s almost the same pattern.”

University of Canterbury’s Motorsport team unveil their entry in the upcoming Australasian contest, painted in colours to honour the late John Britten.




A University team with a need for speed are taking on thousands of students around the world with their motorsport vehicle.


UC Motorsport, from the University of Canterbury, are competing in the international Formula SAE (FSAE) class of motor racing against more than 500 universities around the world.


Teams are required to design, build, transport and race their cars, at various global locations. The UC team would take their vehicle to Melbourne in December.


The team unveiled their new car on Tuesday night. In pink and blue, the car paid homage to the late John Britten, of Britten motorcycles. It was built in the same workshop that Britten used for testing early versions of his motorcycle engine.

Paris attacks: Italian man's second time lucky

PARIS: An Italian tourist had a second lucky escape when he emerged from the bloodiest scene of the Paris attacks with only a slight injury, 30 years after surviving the deadly Heysel stadium disaster in Brussels.


Massimiliano Natalucci’s family told Ita­­lian newspaper Corriere Adriatico that the 45-year-old had escaped with only scratches on one leg in the Bataclan attack, which left 89 people dead.


A friend who attended the concert by the California rock band Eagles of Death Metal with him was not so lucky, and had to undergo an operation on Saturday after being hit in the shoulder.


“The terrorists were just 3m from them the whole time,” Natalucci’s father told the paper.


Almost exactly 30 years ago, on May 29, 1985, Natalucci, aged 15, was with his father and uncle at the Heysel stadium in Brussels for the European Cup final when a wall collapsed, killing 39 people.


Then, as on Friday, Natalucci was unhurt.


His sister Federica has a theory about her brother’s luck: A kiss from Pope John Paul II in Rome when he was eight has protected Natalucci during both disasters. — AFP

Spec Comparo: BMW G 310 R vs Yamaha YZF-R3 vs KTM 390 Duke vs Kawasaki Ninja 300 vs ...

BMW’s G 310 R is going to compete with some really impressive motorcycles! The KTM 390 Duke is a superhit in the country and offers the best bang for the buck in the segment. The Yamaha YZF-R3 is a twin cylinder motorcycle with good performance and excellent build quality. It carries Yamaha’s R-series legacy and in many ways is the ideal step up from the YZF-R15. The Kawasaki Ninja 300 is the only other twin cylinder motorcycle in the segment and has established itself as a motorcycle that one can tour on. The Honda CBR 250R is the oldest motorcycle here. It gets a single cylinder, liquid cooled engine that’s simply outclassed in this party. The Honda CBR 250 R also has had a few niggling quality issues and its surprising that the KTM is a cheaper yet better finished motorcycle than the Honda. The BMW G 310 R should be a well finished product as its a BMW and in the quality department it will have to match or surpass the benchmark setting-  the YZF-R3.

BMW has used a trellis frame to construct the G 310 R. A trellis frame offers excellent rigidity and can be made using cheaper metal like steel. The KTM 390 Duke gets a trellis frame too and that’s no surprise since it’s a design that the Austrian company swears by. Besides these two, the Honda CBR 250R also gets a steel trellis frame. Interestingly, the Yamaha YZF-R3 uses a half trellis frame while the Ninja is the only motorcycle without a trellis frame. The Kawasaki Ninja 300 gets a tubular diamond frame that offers decent feedback. It however, is the heaviest motorcycle in this comparo while the KTM weighs the least. The BMW G 310 R is 13kgs heavier than the Duke and that makes it the second most lightest motorcycle in the segment.

The BMW gets a 34.4 PS engine which results in a power to weight ratio of 217 PS/tonne which is about 83PS/tonne lower than the KTM 390 Duke which also makes the most power at 43.5PS. The Yamaha has the next best power to weight ratio with 248.5PS/tonne while the Ninja is third. The Honda CBR 250R’s power to weight does not even cross the 200 mark with a dismal 162.6PS/ tonne power to weight figure. The Honda is the only SOHC motorcycle here while the rest are DOHC. All motorcycles get a 6-speed transmission.


2016 BMW G 130 R (10)


The BMW G 310 R gets 41mm USD forks and is the only bike with USD forks besides the KTM 390 Duke. The Duke’s unit, however, is 2mm thicker than those on the BMW. The rest get a conventional front suspension setup. The rear monoshock is preload adjustable on all motorcycles.


The KTM and BMW also get the largest front brake rotors at 300mm along with two-channel ABS as standard. This is indeed commendable and we feel that Yamaha and Kawasaki should have offered ABS, at least as an option. Yamaha is working on an ABS equipped YZF-R3 for India and we hope that day arrives soon. The Honda CBR 250R does offer ABS as an option but that pushes the price way above the KTM 390 Duke’s and hence is not a feasible option.

All motorcycles get a 110/70 R17 tyres at the front. At the rear, the KTM and BMW get the widest tyres at 150/60 R17. The rest get 140/70 R17s. What’s interesting, however, is the type and quality of rubber that each manufacturer has chosen. At the head of the field is the KTM 390 Duke that get the sticky Metzelers as standard. The tyres offer immense confidence, both on the road as well as the track, and the confidence in the wet is another highlight. The Honda CBR 250 R gets Continental tyres that get the job done, just about. The Kawasaki and Yamaha, sadly, get tyres that don’t allow the rider to fully exploit the potential of the motorcycles. We’ve ridden the two motorcycles on the track and always felt that the tyres are holding back the chassis. The MRFs on the Yamaha are decent on road and a lot like the IRC rubber on the Ninja.

Going by the press shots and release, the BMW G 310 R get Michelin Pilot Street tyres as standard. There is no word on what tyre will be offered in India though. If BMW fits the G 310 R with Michelins it would be great. It could alternatively work with TVS tyres to develop a new tyre for India that would offer performance and durability. It’s a known fact the KTM too offers Metzelers in India and softer Pirelli rubber in Europe. However, the Metzelers are very capable and offer excellent grip so it’ll be interesting to see what rubber the BMW chooses for India.

The entry level market in India is witnessing a lot of action and manufacturers seem to have finally realised that the Indian motorcyclist does exist. Proof? Count the number of KTMs that populate our streets. BMW seems like it’s trying to reach a middle ground in the segment. It would want to position G 310 R slightly above the KTM but not dangerously close to the twin cylinder motorcycles. At one end of the spectrum you have the KTM 390 Duke, a fast, entertaining motorcycle that doesn’t need you to necessarily break the bank. The Yamaha YZF-R3 is priced a little lower than the Ninja 300 and that makes it the choice if twin cylinder motorcycles are your thing. It is a brilliant product and user friendly too. It’s ergonomics are suited for highway as well as daily commutes and a track day can be another enjoyable experience too. The Kawasaki Ninja 300 is a capable all rounder too but the Yamaha is a better deal here. The Honda CBR 250R, given its age and equipment is simply obliterated by the competition and we’re just talking specs here. Globally, Honda sells the CBR 300R but Honda India has just launched a re-stickered CBR 250R. It’s about time that Honda takes the market seriously. The BMW G 310 R when launched will have BMW’s quality and brand value as one of its strong points. It may not develop the most power but the company is aiming the motorcycle at a wider audience that need a fast yet comfortable motorcycle and at least on paper, the BMW seems to fit the requirements. The pricing will be a critical factor and we’d say a Rs 2.15 to 2.25 lakh price should be justifiable. For now, we count the days to the launch.
