Vets team up for charity raffle

Veterans gathered for a motorcycle ride Saturday afternoon to help raise money for charity.

The annual fundraiser was started after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, as many soldiers were engaged in combat in the Middle East.

“The run was originally put together to provide some relief to the families of soldiers that had suffered loss during Hurricane Katrina while the 155 Brigade combat team was deployed,” said Greg Michel, a group member and war vet.

It wasn’t expected that the event would become an annual fundraiser.

But 10 years later, the ride is still going strong.

“We ride motorcycles and raise money for great causes,” Michel said.

The event is now organized by Dixie Thunder Run and the Better Life Foundation, a charity affiliated with the band, Three Doors Down.

The groups began to work together after Better Life wanted to add a new element to their charity.

“One helps primarily soldiers in need — if they need help paying the bills, to help building a house (or) a wounded warriors situation,” said Craig Hatter, a veteran and the group’s founder. “The other side is we donate through the Better Life Foundation. We donate to children’s hospitals.”

A part of Saturday’s event was an unveiling of a motorcycle being raffled.

The bike is a 2015 Harley Davidson Road Glide custom painted with a Mississippi soldier theme.

“I’m about as excited as a man can be and it not be Christmas,” Hatter said.

This is the eighth year a motorcycle has been raffled off as part of the fundraiser. Last year, organizers raised $40,000.

The raffle winner will be announced Dec. 5 at a Three Doors concert at the Horseshoe Casino in Tunica.

High Heels For Men Show Just How Much Gender Expression Has Changed

“Never before have a few inches mattered so much.” The tagline for an upcoming exhibit at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto says everything about guys in heels.

Today, of course, high-heeled shoes are synonymous with femininity. Men who want to add a bit of height have to do so with inserts on the DL, and any non-cowboys wandering around with heels visibly higher than normal might get a few judgy looks. But for about 130 years in the 17th and 18th centuries, Western men wore heeled shoes as an expression of power.

bata 72

Italian, Ferradini, 1972-1975. Worn by Elton John. Celebrities strutted on stage in outrageous outfits and high glittering heels such as this pair, but more conservative men also paired higher heeled shoes with their suits.

It makes sense if you consider the value placed on height. Tall people, particularly men, are associated with confidence and prestige — we actually tend to pay them higher salaries. So one of the questions Elizabeth Semmelhack, curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, poses through the exhibit is not why men wore heels at one point, but why they ever stopped.

“We’re so nervous about the idea of men in heels today,” Semmelhack told The Huffington Post. “Hopefully, what this exhibition will do is highlight for people that what’s really curious about the history of men in heels is our current attitude towards it.”

Semmelhack theorizes that heeled shoes were borrowed from Asia, where they were used for horseback riding, in the early 1600s. Persia had been gaining political influence around that time, and exoticism in dress was a symbol of high status. It wasn’t long before women began wearing heels, too. Semmelhack explained it was (somewhat unsurprisingly) trendy for women to borrow from mens’ closets in the 1600s, and there they found high-heeled shoes. Never before in the history of mankind did everyone’s butts look so fantastic.

Persian, 17th century.

The heels themselves became gendered, with slender heels for women and blocky ones for men. Then around the middle of the 18th century, men started to abandon them. But there have been exceptions. John Lennon wore boots with heels, followed by plenty of glam rockers. “Elevator shoes” (with height-boosting insoles) provided a discreet option. And somehow the cowboy boot — which is definitely a high heeled shoe for guys — has stuck around as a symbol of rugged masculinity. As we reconsider notions of gender and its role in society, the heel is a prime example of how arbitrary definitions of gender can be.

Feel free to imagine Ron Swanson in any of the shoes below. If you find yourself in Toronto, the exhibition, titled “Standing Tall: The Curious History of Men in Heels,” runs from May 8, 2015, until May 2016.

English, c. 1690-1715. This pair of men’s mules features high flared heels in keeping with turn of the 18th century fashion. The red leather covering the high heels was meant to bring attention to them and also a conveyed a sense of continental sophistication as red heels were famously worn in the court of French King XIV.

American, Justin Boots, 20th century. The packer boot, like the more iconic pull-on cowboy boot, originated on the frontier and was worn for horseback riding. Evolving from 19th century lace-up boots, packers allowed wearers to customize the fit of the boot. The addition of the low-slung heel enabled the boot to stay stable in the stirrup.

1965 Shelby Mustang GT350: Buying and selling classic Shelbys evolved from hobby to business

Vernon Estes is only 24 but his knowledge of vintage cars – Shelby Mustangs and Shelby Cobras in particular – rivals that of a veteran twice his age.

How did Estes, of Leawood, get to be a young man living in a vintage-car world? “I always found older cars more interesting,” he said. “New car stuff gets boring.”

“When I was 10 years old my mom would drop me off at Barnes and Noble and I would read everything I could. I love the history.”

History led him to American racing classics. What was more American than the modified Mustangs and Cobras built by Carroll Shelby, the self-proclaimed chicken farmer who wore striped bib overalls when he started racing sports cars in the early 1950s?

“I was pulled in by the Shelby story,” he said, and the international success of the Ford-powered Cobras that won the GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1964 and FIA World Sportscar Championship for GT cars with the Cobra Daytona coupe in 1965. Shelby was instrumental in the development of the Ford GT40 that beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.

When he was 17, Estes arranged a six-week internship at the Shelby American, Inc., in Las Vegas after corresponding with the company president via an online forum. “It was like going to a car show every day,” he said. He helped the company compile a registry of its cars and occasionally did work in the prototype shop.

Estes graduated from the University of Texas with a Master’s degree in accounting. “When I was in grade school I collected Shelby-related literature and memorabilia,” he said. Success in buying and selling thousands of items online led him to creating a business selling classic cars, mostly Shelby Mustangs and Cobras. He has sold some rare and valuable models in addition to selling cars on consignment.

Estes recently bought a 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350, number 45 of 562 built. Ford asked Shelby to build a high-performance Mustang that could compete with Corvettes in sports car racing. The ’65 GT350s had a 289-cubic-inch V-8, four-speed transmission, side exhausts, no back seat and came only in Wimbledon white. The iconic blue stripes and Cragar wheels found on Estes’ car were the only options.

“I find the ’65 and ’66 Shelbys intriguing because they are the perfect mix of sports car and muscle car,” he said. “The fastback is one of the prettiest cars because it is stylistically simple,” he said.

In 1966, Shelby Mustang production rose to 2,378, and the cars were more user-friendly. They had a back seat and were offered with an automatic transmission in a variety of colors. Hertz even bought 999 for rental cars and 800 of those were black with gold stripes.

“The 1965 is the holy grail because it was a race car for the street with no frills and no concessions made for creature comforts. It is the purest year. Sometimes something is just right the first time.”

Epoch Men's Health Clinic brings free screenings to Conway

Epoch Men’s Health Clinic founder Mike Whitfield calls his clinic, which held a grand opening at its Conway location Friday, a way for men to receive the proper screenings they need to make sound health decisions.

“We’re here to educate and empower the guys,” he said.

Whitfield said Epoch Men’s Health free 100 percent screenings are provided as a no-obligation service.

Free screenings include prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood testing, total testosterone, free testosterone, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) testing, complete blood count (CBC) testing and comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) testing.

According to Epoch Men’s Health, the company created the state’s first physician-run clinic model to help men as young as 29 years old.

“Our medical team discusses with each patient how he’s feeling and what symptoms – such as low energy, exhaustion, weight gain, sadness, forgetfulness and hair loss – he might be experiencing,” said Dr. Thom DeGraff, lead physician at the Conway clinic. “His test results and symptoms could indicate any number of conditions, from Low T to heart issues.

Our goal is to get to the root of the problem, create a treatment plan tailored to him and get him feeling great.”

The lab at Epoch Men’s Health analyzes tests for other possible issues such as problems relating to a patient’s heart, metabolism, nutrition and hormones.

Whitfield launched the company that Arkansas Urology bought last year after witnessing his own personal realizations about men’s health.

His discoveries led him to believe, as he said to attendees of the grand opening, that men do not always spend enough time medically checking up on themselves, no matter how healthy they may seem.

Scot Davis, CEO of Arkansas Urology, said the Conway clinic “brings an added value to the community.”

Unlike other facilities that Whitfield said go about hormone therapy the wrong way by promoting a quick or unhealthy solution, he said Epoch Health follows a patient throughout their journey to better health.

Whitfield added that Epoch Men’s Health provides its services in an affordable way that allows for men on government medical assistance to receive care if additional visits are needed.

Accepted insurance carriers can be found at the Epoch Men’s Health website, epochmenshealth.com.

Patients in need of additional care beyond the scope of Epoch Men’s Health are advised of their options.

The clinic operates in a way that allows men to stop by without an appointment at a time that is convenient for them between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays.

Epoch Men’s Health, located at 800 Exchange Avenue, Suite 103 in Conway, has eight patient rooms and a ninth room for testing red blood count.

To learn more about Epoch Health, call 501-358-6062.

Epoch Men’s Health also operates clinics in Little Rock, North Little Rock and Benton.

The company is set to open locations in Anchorage, Alaska, Tucson, Arizona, and Columbia, Missouri, this spring.

Mens Paracord Survival Bracelet with Built-in Bottle Opener by Adventures Depot

Good to search, better to FIND. Now when you purchase your Paracord Bracelet with a Built-in Bottle Opener from Adventures Depot you have something unique, reliable, yours.

See that box with smile and feel that warm mix of excitement and relief. UPS has come. Open it! You’ll find more than a paracord survival bracelet inside, you’ll find the commitment from Adventures Depot. The people who make this, stand with it all the way.

Look at it! Well built. SOLID and FLEXIBLE. SOFT and STRONG. 9 inches long. Tightly woven paracord built for SURVIVAL. But why are the Adventures Depot paracord bracelets better than the rest? Simple. We understand the MIL-C-5040H and how it was modified to the current standards defined by the Parachute Industry Association. We design better than anyone. We don’t make buckles that come in pieces for you to lose. We use the best 9 core Type III, 550 paracord. Tough stuff.

It’s time to test the bottle opener. Grab a bottle. Tap on the side. That clink that you hear tells you the all-metal bottle opener is THE REAL THING.

Then wrap the paracord around your wrist. Good and secure. It doesn’t just look good, it feels good. Put it on. Take it off. Admire. Repeat. But it’s not a toy, it’s a TOOL. Soon you’re snapping it on like a pro. Next you won’t want to take it off.

And about the whistle that’s built into the clasp. We warn you it’s loud. Better to try this outside. Your dog probably won’t like it but you will.

So now you’ve got it. You’ve looked it over and all is good. It’s nice KNOWING you made a good choice.

You’ll wear it a lot. Your friends will notice. Some may not say anything for a while. Tell them where you got it, or better yet, open a beer for them as though it’s nothing new. Buy an extra and hold it back. Toss it to an unsuspecting buddy after he admires yours.

NWUK Motorcycles and Bikers on a previous ride

Hundreds of motorcyclists from across the North West are riding coast to coast – all in the name of charity.

Brian Scott, 56, from NWUK Motorcycles and Bikers group, has helped organise a 150 mile journey that starts at Lytham Windmill at 9.30am on Easter Sunday and ends in Whitby.

If I said to you cancer then you would know exactly what it is, but if I say Tuberous Sclerosis you won’t, that is why it’s vital that we get as much publicity as possible.

    Brian Scott

Riders will come together to raise money for the Tuberous Sclerosis Association and support Brian, whose son has the disorder.

Brian’s son Daniel cannot walk, talk or feed himself and needs constant care and attention.

Tuberous Sclerosis is a genetic disorder that affects around 10,000 people in the UK but is very hard to spot as it can only be detected by scans once someone is two-years-old.

Brian, from Lytham, says events like this are essential in ensuring more people know about the disease.

He said: “If I said to you cancer then you would know exactly what it is, but if I say Tuberous Sclerosis you won’t, that is why it’s vital that we get as much publicity as possible.

“Everyone throughout the world needs to know about the disorder and the affects it can have, some people may not know that they or their family have it.”

Emma Damian-Grint, Tuberous Sclerosis Association community fund-raising manager, said: “The Tuberous Sclerosis Association (TSA) are absolutely delighted that the NWUK Motorcycles and Bikers group have decided to support our charity, with this wonderful event.

Brian has been delighted with the response and organisers cannot believe how big the event has become.

Brian said: “We have riders coming from all round the country, people are coming all the way from Whitby just to ride back.

“I know Brian found the support the Tuberous Sclerosis Association gave him in the early days of his son’s diagnosis invaluable and that he’ll be moved so many of his fellow bikers are turning out to support him on April 5.”

Everyone participating in the event on Easter Sunday will need to donate £10 to take part and ride 125cc-2300cc motorbikes.

Love Joan Holloway’s sexy cat eye flick or Betty Draper’s classic curls? Now you can recreate them in a new way, thanks to an upcoming collaboration between “Mad Men” and Birchbox.

According to WWD, AMC and Birchbox are teaming up to commemorate the end of “Mad Men” (the final seven episodes begin airing April 5) with 1960s-inspired beauty boxes for both women and men.

“Birchbox turned the beauty category on its head and engaged a generation making them an ideal partner for AMC as we head into the final seven episodes of ‘Mad Men,’” Theresa Beyer, senior vice president of promotion, activation and partnership at AMC, told WWD.

The “Mad Men” beauty boxes will be curated by Birchbox founders and CEOs Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna and “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner.

The women’s beauty box, priced at $10, will include liquid liner to create a cat eye and bouffant worthy hair-spray, while the Birchbox Man box, $20, will include grooming products and accessories.
The collaboration will also include editorial and video content on birchbox.com.

“We curated a selection of products that captures the flavor of that era while maintaining a modern sensibility — for example, a bold lip in an easy to use pencil and a soft hold paste for a relaxed take on the men’s hairstyles,” Beauchamp said. “Our hope is that this collaboration helps celebrate [the show].”

    Rockford Speedway announces 2015 schedule

LOVES PARK, Ill. — With temperatures in the 50s scheduled this week and the snow melting in a hurry, area racing enthusiasts can start thinking seriously about the coming season.

Rockford Speedway officials have released the track’s 2015 schedule, featuring over 40 events at the northern Illinois facility which is prepping to open its gates for the 68th consecutive summer.

Cars first take to the track at 11 a.m. April 4, with an open practice session for all divisions. The Stone & Double T 200-lap four-cylinder enduro takes the green flag at 3 p.m. that day.

On April 12, the 38th annual Spring Classic will serve as the season-opening event for the Big 8 Late Model Series presented by Gandrud Chevrolet and the Mid American Stock Car Series while also featuring the American Ethanol Super Trucks.

NASCAR Whelen All American Series action hits the high banks of Rockford Speedway once again this summer, with April 18 set as Opening Night. Saturday night action continues until Sept. 12, when NASCAR Track Champions are crowned in the Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Bargain Hunter Sportsman, Miller Lite American Short Tracks, Kickstart Roadrunners and the Sam’s Drive In Roadrunner Challenge.

“Wild Wednesdays” begin June 10 and continue through Aug. 5. This year’s Wednesday night slate includes nine consecutive Wednesday night programs featuring the Roadrunner Super Summer Series, Bandits, Winged Women on Wheels, MisFits, Super Cups, “Wild & Crazy” Figure 8’s and One-on-One Spectacular Drags.

Special events returning to the Speedway this summer include the Original Trailer Race of Destruction (June 13), Kid’s Day Camp Afternoon Sparktacular (June 24), Midnight Ride of Paul Revere & Fireworks Extravaganza (July 4), World Famous Figure 8 Trailer Race (Aug. 1), Beatin’ & Bangin’ Boat Race (Aug. 29) and Night of Thrills (Sept. 19).

The popular “Gilley’s Cool 5” returns for a fifth year in 2015 with “Cool 5” races being held on May 30, June 20, July 25, Aug. 15 and Sept. 5. The Illini Racing Series Midgets, American Super Cups, Central States Super Cups and Hornets are also included in the busy 2015 racing schedule.

One of the biggest events of the summer takes placeJune 27, with the return of the ARCA Midwest Tour and the running of the All Star 100. Ever since the first All Star 100 back in 1978, racing greats like Bobby Allison, Mark Martin, Dick Trickle and Joe Shear have all tasted victory in the 100-lap showcase, while legends like Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and Alan Kulwicki have all participated in the event.

Along with the star-studded Super Late Model field expected for All Star 100, the NASCAR Late Models share the stage that evening, contesting their “Star Spangled 76” lap feature. Complimenting the “Late Model Super Show” is the Central States Super Cups, who round out the June 27th card.

The 50th National Short Track Championships (NSTC) take place Oct. 2-4, showcasing the top short track racers in the Midwest. This year’s 50th NSTC includes the return of the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Cars on Sunday, along with Saturday night’s Big 8 Late Model Series 108 lapper, Great Northern Sportsman, Mid-American Stock Cars, Illini Midgets, American Ethanol Super Trucks and of course the weekend’s main event, the 200-lap Super Late Model feature race on Sunday afternoon.

The 24th Annual Bahama Bracket Nationals, where nearly 200 drivers compete against each other and the clock, return Saturday and Sunday Oct. 17-18, while the Goblin 250 four-cylinder enduro closes the curtain on Rockford Speedway’s 68th season Sunday afternoon Oct. 25.

Promotional Nights such as Kid’s Nights, Scout Night & Military Night will return in 2015, their dates however are not yet decided and will be featured in the final schedule, set to be released at the end of March.

"Manshaming" Is The New Term In The World Of Body Politics, Because Dudes Need Their Own ...

On Monday, an article in the Boston Globe invented a term that none of us needed: “manshaming.” Author Michael Andor Brodeur purports that the policing of men’s bodies in the media is on the rise and that it’s a new and disturbing phenomenon. ”Men, have you been more conscious of the fact that your six pack rolls more like a keg? Don’t fret. It’s not you; it’s the media. We’ve entered the era of man shaming,” he writes. Oh, did you hear that? That was just my eyes rolling so hard you could probably hear ‘em from outer space. Brodeur goes on to say that Justin Bieber’s new Men’s Health cover, which features the singer shirtless, is bound to stir up controversy and conversation about how much the image was photoshopped and retouched. So, basically just an average day in the world of women’s fashion magazines

The article shares six examples of male celebrities who have been body shamed: Four of whom received said criticisms from the tabloid party known as TMZ. It would be one thing to show evidence of rampant body shaming as a normalized phenomenon across media outlets, but finding examples of body shaming on TMZ is like finding fried chicken at Popeye’s. The fact that a few examples of something that’s been happening to women for decades is somehow news when it starts happening to men at a fraction of the occurrence rate is nothing short of troubling.

Like the manorexia phenomenon before it, it seems like what’s considered to be a common or normalized experience for women is being sensationalized for men. The idea that there’s something unique about men experiencing eating disorders or body policing, or that it’s exceptional when these hollowing illnesses affect males, is not just wrong, but an irresponsible paradigm. This not only takes away from the experience of women who deal with these issues everyday, but it also says suggests that such issues are “girl problems” that men just haven’t experienced. It’s important to create space for men to speak about these issues, but equally necessary to understand the degree to which they affect women. The reality is that body policing and eating disorders are considered “standard” or “expected” for women, and that’s where the greater problems lie.

This is not to say that body shaming should be normal or accepted for anyone. Equality and justice don’t mean that people of all genders should feel equally terrible about their bodies. Shaming and policing of all people’s bodies is really not something that I want anyone to experience and would never endorse. The Boston Globe article irks me because it suggests that the body policing of men exists in a vacuum, when in actuality, most white cis-gender men can likely turn the TV on at any time of day and see someone who looks like them — they can feel represented and visible. They don’t have to shop elsewhere for their clothes if they’re bigger — because “plus-sizes” don’t really happen all that much in men’s clothing. They’re just incorporated into regular size runs. And they don’t have to pay more for the privilege. So let’s rally against fat shaming, body shaming and unrealistic body expectations for everyone, of course. But let’s also be realistic about how and where these harmful messages are most prevalent.

Apprenticeships Are Still Seen As A 'Man's World'

Parents were twice as likely to advise boys to take up an apprenticeship than girls, with only one female in 10 seeing an apprenticeship as a viable option, a study by British Gas has showed.

A survey of 2,000 teenagers found that half of girls, and almost as many boys, said they had received “unhelpful” careers advice.

Engineering apprentice Natalie Foster said she was “a little apprehensive” going into such a male-dominated industry, and is the only woman in her class.

“The whole experience has been very liberating, as back in school I remember being steered away from the science and technology subjects because I was a girl,” she said. “I think times have changed since then and people have realised that there’s absolutely no reason why women can’t do technical jobs.

“Personally, I love to see women on television or in the media in very practical roles and I’d love to inspire young women not to be afraid to follow their passions, even if it takes them into a traditionally male-dominated field.”

Claire Miles, managing director for at British Gas, added: “It’s clear from this research that apprenticeships are still regarded as something of a man’s world among young people. That’s behind the times. Despite the rising popularity of apprenticeships, we’re disappointed that more girls aren’t benefiting from this career option.”

The news came as thousands of new apprenticeships are being announced amid fresh evidence of their benefits to firms and warnings of skills shortages in the energy industry.

Companies across the country marked the start of National Apprenticeship Week with a series of training announcements, while the Government stressed the “vital contribution” they make to the economy.

A report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research said consumers preferred to deal with businesses employing apprentices, which it estimated was worth billions of pounds.

A typical apprentice delivers productivity gains of more than £10,000 a year, and double that in industries including construction and engineering, according to the study.

Business Secretary Vince Cable, who will meet scores of employers at an event in London, said: “In launching National Apprenticeship Week we are celebrating the 2.1 million apprenticeship starts since 2010 and the positive impact they are having on businesses around the country.

“The benefits of apprenticeships are clear – they make a vital contribution to the economy, boost business productivity and give people the skills they need to get on in the world of work.

“As this research shows, there has been an important shift in the attitudes towards apprenticeships with businesses, consumers, and young people recognising the significant opportunities they can offer.”

Energy firm SSE warned that half the sector’s workforce was expected to retire by 2023, so more than 200,000 people will have to be recruited.

Director of human resources John Stewart said the company was boosting its apprenticeship numbers by a fifth, and investing more than £11 million in a recruitment and training programme.

“Research we’ve carried out tells us for every £1 we spend on our apprenticeship programme, the net economic impact on society is £4.29,” he said.

London Mayor Boris Johnson will confirm plans for a new scheme that will create thousands of apprenticeships in the capital – while firms including Siemens, EE, Prudential and Kwik Fit announced new placements.

Teachers will spend a day at Nestle factories in areas including York as part of a company drive to boost apprenticeships and highlight what businesses are looking for in new recruits.

The Co-operative Food is offering a 10% discount on groceries at 2,800 stores to apprentices.

Labour’s London Assembly economic spokeswoman Fiona Twycross said: “Boris Johnson has a vast mountain to climb if he is going to come anywhere near delivering the quarter of a million apprenticeships he promised Londoners by 2016.

“Even with those apprenticeships which are being created, almost half of them are going to people over 25 years old and already in work. Whilst it’s important to support people to develop their careers, this approach leaves the apprenticeship programme utterly failing young people.”

A spokesman for the mayor of London said: “Over 40,000 people now start an apprenticeship every year in London, which is more than double the number starting four years ago.

“The nearly-190,000 apprentices that have begun work in London since 2010 would view the mayor’s championing of apprenticeships as a success, not a failure.”

MIAMI — At the arched entrance of the gateway to Route 66, a father and son business resides where powerful, two-wheeled masterpieces are created from pieces of metal. Their hand-made projects emit rumbles of power which can be heard from miles away.

Owner Michael Johnson and his son Christopher, 27, run a small town shop called “Route 66 Custom Cycles” located right off of Main Street. In their line of work, they purchase, sell and build custom motorcycles. The Johnsons have owned this business for five years. The business was spawned by their love for choppers.
