MotoGP News: Mees: GP riders have been doing their homework!

2015 AMA Grand National champion Jared Mees feels the overall level of Superprestigio entrants has improved since his last visit to Barcelona, stating “the riders have definitely been doing their homework.”

Mees, who finished runner up to Marc Marquez at the 2014 event, has spent two weeks in Spain before the event, splitting his time between the Noyes Camp in Canudas and Marquez’s dirt track in Rufea.

In that time Mees had the chance to study the technique of road racing names such as Marquez, Toni Elias and Xavier Simeon, and was suitably impressed with the Europeans’ approach to dirt track racing.

“When I was over in the ranch in Canudas and yesterday at Rufea the riders have definitely been doing their homework and have improved their riding quite a lot from a year ago,” said the 29-year old on the eve of the third running of the event. “It’s exciting to see they’re taking the flat track so seriously over here.

“We had a great time dicing it up with Brad [Baker] and Marc at his track. It was some of the best fun I’ve had on a motorcycle to tell you the truth. We were enjoying ourselves, having a great time. That’s what it’s all about.”

Mees travelled across the Atlantic just weeks after triumphing in the inaugural Superprestigio of the Americas event in Las Vegas, an event he won by a narrow margin from countryman Baker.

While training with Marquez in Rufea, Mees asked to try the double MotoGP world champion’s bike for size and noticed some interesting differences.

“I think the biggest difference between our motorcycles is that his is set up a little bit lower. Mine is taller. He has some good strong points on his while there were some better points on mine.

“Just personal preferences like my brake pedal was a lot lower. I think he likes some things about my bike. He said my bike was more torque-y and had more traction coming out of the corners. All the riders set their bike up personally. Everyone wants to drive their bikes off the corners as hard as they can but there are a lot of little things that add up.”

On Saturday morning Mees was the fourth fastest in the ‘Open’ category and sixth overall with a lap time of 12.487s.

13 Gifts for the Road-Tripping Motorhead in Your Life

Holiday shopping is easy for some people. “Running shoes, size 10.” OK; no problem. “A fleece please!” Easy. But maybe you’ve got that one guy or gal who, grinning like a dentist hitting the sweet gas, hands you a grease-smeared microfiche printout of a clutch assembly with several 16-digit part numbers circled. Or the name of an obscure carburetor and an Italian phone number scrawled on a post-it. Maybe you are the kind of wonderful Santa who obliges such a request.

More than likely, you are not, because the world is a cruel place where joy can only be denied. If you can’t bring yourself to put a piece of fine Italian pot-metal under the tree, maybe you can at least support your giftee’s road-loving lifestyle with AT LEAST one of these wonderful gifts.

Christian Louboutin Hong Kong – for men with sole

The iconic red sole, the spikes and stilettos; Christian Louboutin’s shoes are probably the most coveted in the world, and inextricably linked with women and sex. In more than 20 years, Louboutin has made magic, almost alchemic, from women’s footwear. But, the French designer has also garnered a rather loyal following of men since he started his men’s range in 2011.

Alexis Mourot, the company’s chief operating officer and general manager, says men’s sales make up 10 per cent of their Hong Kong and China business, still trailing behind the 24 per cent the men’s line commands globally.

But they are hoping this is about to change with a new Central store in On Lan Street dedicated to men, opened last week. It’s the brand’s first men’s boutique in the city, tapping into a fashion market that is significantly more experimental and less conservative than their Western counterparts.

“This is quite a new category for us with a lot of potential,” says Mourot. “The main issue is to be with the correct distribution worldwide and we have been very keen to select the right points of sales.”

In Paris, we meet the eccentric designer in a cosy lounge next to his Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau offices, showroom and flagship stores. Even though it’s a chilly September day and the rain has been intermittently falling, there has been a line of shoppers outside his boutiques all day. It’s fashion week, and Louboutin is juggling several days of head-to-head appointments.

Those who’ve talked to the designer know about his effervescent character. He has a quick and frequent wit and is more obsessed with manicured gardens, ancient Egypt and Bollywood, than the big fashion monthly magazines. During our interview I’m surprised to see that he’s wearing a pair of dark leather trainers (“I usually don’t wear sports shoes,” he quips.) rather than a pair of more exotic designs.

“I always designed a few special shoes for men, but the first time I tried a proper collection was for the singer Mika, when he approached me to make shoes for his tour,” he says about how the men’s range came about.

Louboutin might have transformed footwear into a mass fetish, but of all the designers in the world, why would a male pop star choose one famed for women’s stilettos?

“He [Mika] grew up with lots of sisters, and he saw how they were obsessed with my shoes,” Louboutin explains. “He says they would be transformed by putting on a pair of my shoes and he wanted that kind of confidence and transformation for himself on stage.”

Once the designer started, he ended up making a full men’s collection inspired by the stage, which of course Mika didn’t need in its entirety. So he put a selection on his shelves, which sold like hot cakes. Five years down the line, with men’s fashion driven by a new generation of metrosexuals who like to spend and often, those red soles are finding themselves on plenty of men.

While his women’s shoes aim to unleash our inner showgirls, his men’s shoes seem to have found a sweet spot with performers, whether it’s “sportsmen like famous footballers and basketball players, or singers, musicians, celebrities and actors”.

The sex appeal and confidence it lends to women seems to have transferred to a kind of masculine bravado in his men’s line, gaining fans such as Kanye West, Chris Brown and Elton John. And they all pay – Louboutin never gifts shoes, not even to celebrities.

While his aesthetic doesn’t directly compete with the many more traditional men’s luxury shoemakers around, the company hopes to make inroads with this market as it becomes more experimental. And they want to send the message that his eccentric styles never sacrifice on craft and substance.

Just outside Naples is a boutique family-run shoemaking factory, making certain models of Louboutin men’s shoes and boots in limited quantities, while also serving its fair share of traditional men’s brands.

When we visit, we see leathers being meticulously cut, shaped and crafted for a Louboutin shoe. Firstly, leather is selected to be cut “a mano” (by hand) by one of the craftsmen; a small alligator pelt is chosen for each shoe to ensure that it gets the best part of the skin and that each shoe matches in grain, colour and pattern. The soles are lined with cork, a process called “sughero” for comfort, and then the bottom layer of the sole is stitched to the upper. Not wanting to sacrifice on the pristine red lacquered sole, this final layer isn’t stitched so that it maintains the untouched, whole red surface. Colours are painted onto the leather uppers using layers upon layers of natural French dye, chosen for its deep patina effect and shine.

There are slightly different approaches when designing for the different genders, Louboutin admits. The architecture of a heeled shoe, the woman’s curved arch make it a very different animal from the more angular, flat men’s shoes that use bigger swathes of fabric. Men’s shoes tend to require thicker leathers than women’s; and some prints, he points out, work better in bigger pieces. But “the surprising combination of textures and materials” is a signature that he uses for both collections.

So what are we to expect for the world of Louboutin men? His items range from formal to casual: velvet embroidered loafers, monk shoes, to daring slip-ons with metallic spikes, and yes even occasionally the odd pair of heeled shoes. There’s bright red leather lace-up high-top trainers entirely covered in spikes, the cognac leather and denim Top Daviol flat up flat (a curious take on a formal shoe) or a super shiny slip-on skater shoe. These generally aren’t for shy and retiring types. You can see why performers are so attracted to Louboutin’s wilder, innovative creations.

While they’ve been doing more traditional bench-made leather shoes in these past seasons, the focus for the men’s collection is still centred around Louboutin’s signature style: “a mix of traditional materials, playful prints or special seasonal fabrics with advanced, highly technical applications”.

And Mourot says that by “achieving a balanced offering of casual shoes and more formal style, there is very strong potential for the future”.

The designer’s frequent visits to Hong Kong already has coiffed, grown 40-year-old ladies regularly turning into whimpering schoolgirl fanatics at his store appearances. Maybe it’s the men’s turn soon?

We have little doubt that this new store is going to do well – when it comes to fashion, Hong Kong men have a daring experimental side and peacocking is a forte. The timing seems right. Especially in the festive season, red soles do seem quite appropriate, don’t they?

'Unique' classic cars destroyed in Hastings panel beater blaze

Simon Hendery

Bill Russell, owner of Apex Panel Beating & Spray Paint in Hastings, talks about losing his restored classic cars in a blaze that destroyed part of the business on Thursday night.

Hastings panelbeater Bill Russell says he is giving up classic car restoration after a blaze at his business destroyed vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Four classic American cars Russell had painstakingly restored over five years were reduced to charred metal skeletons by a fire in the storage area of his business on Thursday night.

He imported the cars from America and said they were worth at least $60,000 each.

The vehicles destroyed were a 1936 Ford V8 coupe, a 1951 Cadillac coupe, a 1962 Ford Thunderbird, and a 1974 six-door Cadillac Limousine.

The Limousine, which Russell had hired out for weddings, was a “one-off” in New Zealand, he said.

“A lot of work down the drain. You can’t replace those cars.”

He said he would not be looking for another restoration project.

“It takes too long to do a car up these days.”

The fire also claimed two racing cars belonging to friends that were in the shop ready to be painted on Friday, along with other vehicles belonging to customers of the business.

This Mazda RX7 racing car was also destroyed in the fire.

Russell also lost his brand-new aluminium boat, which he had not yet taken out on the water.

While the classic cars were insured, the payout would not fully cover the replacement cost of the vehicles, he said.

The fire service said the blaze at Apex Panel Beating & Spray Painting’s building, off Warren Street in Hastings, was “well-involved” when it got the call at 10.50pm.

Police, as well as the fire service, had been at the scene overnight on Thursday carrying out investigations.

Early indications seemed to suggest the fire was caused by an electrical issue.

Feds Asking Gay Men to Post Selfies From the Gym to Promote Obamacare

The Department of Health and Human Services is partnering with an advocacy organization that is asking gay men to send selfies from the gym to promote Obamacare.

The agency announced Tuesday it was joining with several lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender groups to encourage the LGBT community to enroll.

“As part of LGBT Week of Action from Dec. 7 – 11, Out2Enroll and other organizations will hold enrollment activities and provide in-person assistance across the country,” the department said. “Additionally, partners will leverage social media campaigns to ask their members and affiliates to sign up for an affordable health plan for 2016 through the Health Insurance Marketplace.”

One social media campaign started by the agency’s main partner, “Out2Enroll,” is #HealthySelfie.

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 3.27.42 PM

“We’ve showed [sic] you ours, now you show us yours,” the group’s Facebook post reads, featuring mostly images of men at the gym.

“Join The White House, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and our friends -Colby Melvin, R.J. Aguiar, Jack Mackenroth – in sharing a #HealthySelfie,” the caption read. “Show that we take #PrideInOurHealth! And #GetCovered #StayCovered so that you can#BeOutBeHealthy!”

Colby Melvin is a “Designer, Model, [and] Activist” who recently modeled for Cheap Undies. R.J. Aguiar is founder of “Not Adam and Steve,” an LGBT advocacy group. Jack Mackenroth is a spokesperson for an HIV education campaign and former contestant on the reality series Project Runway.

Mackenroth and Aguiar have posed for selfies for the campaign. Jason Carter, a member of RuPaul’s pit crew, a “group of scantily clad muscular men who appear on all seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race,” has also posed.

Sylvia Burwell, the Health and Human Services secretary, praised the partnership with Out2Enroll.

“This administration has made historic progress for the LGBT community, ensuring that people cannot be denied health coverage because of their gender identity, sexual orientation, or pre-existing conditions,” she said. “We are proud to continue that progress and work with our national partners to give more LGBT Americans and their families access to quality, affordable health coverage.”

Out2Enroll was created in 2013 and began partnering with the government to promote the law.

“During Open Enrollment, Out2Enroll will support in-person events across the country by participating in local LGBT Prides and town halls, providing LGBT-specific enrollment materials to partners, and hosting administration surrogates,” the agency said. “Out2Enroll will also continue to provide in-person and online training sessions on LGBT cultural competency and enrollment issues for assisters, including Navigators, Certified Application Counselors (CACs), and agents/brokers.”

“Health is an LGBT equality issue—we all deserve to be healthy and to get the help we need to protect ourselves and our families,” said Kellan Baker, steering committee member at Out2Enroll, who is a senior fellow at the liberal think tank the Center for American Progress. “Our community has seen historic changes this year, such as marriage equality and new nationwide nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people in health care.”

“By taking advantage of the financial help that’s available and getting covered by December 15th, we can all make sure that we’re able to celebrate these advances for years to come,” he said.

The government is partnering with other advocacy groups, including Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and the Human Rights Campaign.

The #HealthySelfie campaign has yet to take off.

Return to the Moon: Exploration, Enterprise, and Energy in the Human Settlement of Space

Former NASA Astronaut Harrison Schmitt advocates a private, investor-based approach to returning humans to the Moon―to extract Helium 3 for energy production, to use the Moon as a platform for science and manufacturing, and to establish permanent human colonies there in a kind of stepping stone community on the way to deeper space. With governments playing a supporting role―just as they have in the development of modern commercial aeronautics and agricultural production―Schmitt believes that a fundamentally private enterprise is the only type of organization capable of sustaining such an effort and, eventually, even making it pay off.

Fort Hood soldier killed in motorcycle accident identified

The motorcyclist killed on Thursday after colliding with an 18-wheeler in the 3900 block of Stan Schlueter Loop has been identified as a Fort Hood soldier, according to a release from the post.

Spc. Eric Robert Moses, 21, a native of Wareham, Mass., entered active-duty military service in October 2013 as an infantryman. He was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, in February 2014.

Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Carroll Smith said the wreck occurred just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Robinett Road and Stan Schlueter.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcycle and the 18-wheeler were both traveling eastbound on Stan Schlueter when the 18-wheeler, who was in the outside lane, was attempting to make a right-hand turn,” Smith told reporters at the scene.

“Witnesses said that the motorcycle was driving erratically and attempted to beat the tractor trailer that was turning in, and he collided with the side of the trailer. He was pronounced deceased at 3:25 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.”

Fort Hood has had 13 accidents resulting in a fatality, three of which involved motorcycles, between Oct. 1, 2014 to Dec. 8, 2015.

“Reducing the number of vehicle accident deaths for our soldiers is a priority for all our leaders. Accidents are preventable, predictable and avoidable, and through engaged leadership and training, we remain committed to ensuring our soldiers are vigilant and mindful of being safe both on and off duty,” said Tom Rheinlander, Fort Hood Public Affairs director.

Circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation.

Moses’ awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the Expert Rifle Marksmanship Qualification Badge.

Design and Control of Hybrid Active Power Filters (SpringerBriefs in Electrical and Computer Engineering)

Design and Control of Hybrid Active Power Filters presents an overview of the current quality problems and their compensators. To get a balance between the system cost and performance, hybrid active power filters (HAPFs) are valuable. The book presents the coverage of resonance phenomena prevention capability, filtering performance and system robustness analysis of HAPF; nonlinear inverter current slope characteristics and their linear operation region requirement analysis of the hysteresis PWM for the HAPF; minimum inverter capacity design procedure of HAPF, adaptive dc-link voltage controller for the HAPF and the real design example of a 220V 10kVA HAPF, in which the system performance analysis method, minimum dc voltage deduction concept and adaptive dc voltage idea can be further extended into the other active compensators, such as APF, static synchronous compensator STATCOM, etc. This book will benefit researchers, graduate students, and electrical power engineers in the field of power-quality compensation.

Dr. Chi-Seng Lam and Dr. Man-Chung Wong are both from the University of Macau, Macao, China.

Men's Spring 2016 Shoe Trend: Statement Soles

Designers are selling their soles this season. For spring ’16, men’s dress shoes go unconventional with eye-grabbing bottoms in chunky rubber or painted wood.

The trend kicked off on the runways during the various men’s fashion weeks. High-end labels like Ann Demeulemeester offered sleek footwear silhouettes with graphic bottoms, including Demeulemeester’s squared-toe wooden sole.

Ann Demeulemeester spring 2016A look from Ann Demeulemeester’s spring ’16 show. REX Shutterstock.

From the conservative to the flashy, various footwear brands then participated in the look, each offering its own unique take on the trend.

Classic brands like Fratelli Rosetti and Grenson unexpectedly went for extreme soles. Fratelli Rosetti presented a thick cork midsole on its perforated brogue. Grenson’s ultra-thick white lug sole was done in collaboration with Nick Wooster.

Meanwhile, luxury labels went for more refined, less chunky silhouettes. Dior Homme offered a paneled-rubber bottom on its monkstrap style, while Marc Jacobs’ laceup brogue had a painted wooden sole.

While many of the dress styles are indeed meant to be dressy, they can also be worn during the day in a more casual context. Just pair them with dark denim and let the soles do the talking.

Cars We Remember: The Saga of Young Joe

With gas prices at a four-year low and more drivers on the road this holiday season than ever, it’s time for our yearly column on the dangers of drinking and driving. DUI arrests continue to be a major problem nationwide, and the following story is a too often repeated problem that plagues our nation’s highways.

This is the saga of young Joe, a fun loving 21-year-old who is full of life, has lots of friends and is a good person. He also has a beautiful muscle car, a 1968 AMC Javelin 390 that he loves to drive. As Joe lives in a warm climate state, taking his car out during the holidays is a common occurrence.

Joe could be your friend, son, sibling, parent or your husband. He’s having a great time at a holiday party, joining in on all the fun. He feels he’s fine to get behind the wheel even though he has had one too many alcoholic drinks.

It’s 1:30 a.m. and time to head home. Thank goodness he’s alone in his AMC Javelin 390 as Joe isn’t aware that on this night he’ll become one of the more than 32,000 drivers that will die in car accidents in 2015. This death rate is an 8.1-percent increase over 2014 fatalities as every 51 minutes an alcohol related fatality occurs somewhere in the United States. Further, his death will be recorded in the 25-percent group of impaired driving fatalities that occur between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tracks all data available on alcohol related crashes and fatalities, and stresses that drunk driving is often a symptom of a larger problem: alcohol misuse and abuse.

Back to Joe.

Joe is not aware he is speeding at 65 mph, and approaching a curve in the highway that should be taken at 35 mph. His reactions, meanwhile, have been slowed by the alcohol. Then, his cell phone rings and he’s further distracted.

Joe is going too fast to make the curve. To make matters worse, he also forgot to buckle his seatbelt when he left the party. Before Joe even knows what is happening, his car is off the dark country road and headed directly toward a huge tree. His 1968 muscle car AMC Javelin 390 does not have airbags.

There is no correcting. Joe’s car hits the tree with a resounding crunch.

At 1/10th of a second, the car’s front bumper and grillwork collapse.

At 2/10ths of a second, the hood crumbles, rises and smashes into the windshield. The grillwork now disintegrates.

At 3/10ths of a second Joe is sprung upright from his seat. His legs are immediately broken, and his knees crash against the dashboard. The steering wheel bends under his grip.

Page 2 of 2 – At 4/10ths of a second, the front of the car is completely destroyed and is now dead still. However, the rear end of the car is still traveling at 55 mph, and the 750-lb. AMC 390-V8 engine and accessories are crunched into the tree.

At 5/10ths of a second, the impact rips Joe’s shoes clean off his feet. The Javelin’s chassis bends in the middle and Joe’s head is slammed into the windshield. The car’s rear end begins its downward fall as the spinning wheels churn into the ground.

At 6/10ths of a second, the entire body of the car is twisted out of shape and the front seat continues to ram forward.

At 7/10ths of a second, Joe’s chest is pinned against the steering wheel shaft. His internal organs crash against his rib cage.

At 8/10ths of a second, Joe is dead. He’s now a statistic.

If you plan to host a holiday party this year or a Super Bowl or Daytona 500 gathering, remember these important facts: You can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you served alcohol to ends up in a drunk-driving crash. Please make sure all of your guests designate sober drivers in advance, or help arrange alternate transportation. Have phone numbers for taxi cab companies available; and finally, have everyone put their keys into a large bowl when entering the party and then take away vehicle keys if guests become intoxicated.

In summary, it’s not just young drivers like Joe who die on our nation’s highways. Many adult drivers become statistics, too, from similar alcohol induced or distracted driving mistakes. Plan your travel carefully this holiday season, and never be in a hurry. If roads turn nasty, pull off safely at a roadside rest stop or have a coffee at restaurant.

Finally, if you must stop your vehicle to rest, never pull off and stop on the freeway shoulder or side of a road—it’s dangerous sitting there as the odds of being struck by an oncoming vehicle is very high.

Keep in mind that more deaths per mile traveled occur during holiday season. Have a safe 2015 Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. season, and a happy New Year’s Eve.

Next week, we’ll look at distracted driving in all its forms and why driver phone texting/distraction is now a national driving nightmare.

Cars We Remember: The Saga of Young Joe

Infertile Men May Have Higher Risk of Heart Disease, Diabetes

MONDAY, Dec. 7, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Infertile men may have a higher risk of developing other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and substance abuse disorders, compared with fertile men, a new study suggests.

“We found that infertile men developed several chronic diseases in the years following an infertility evaluation,” said lead researcher Dr. Michael Eisenberg, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford University Medical School, in Palo Alto, California.

“What’s interesting is that these are young, healthy men,” he said. “Prior studies suggested a higher risk of [testicular] cancer or even death. But for the first time, we are seeing higher risk of these metabolic diseases.”

These findings suggest that infertility may provide a window into later health, Eisenberg added.

For the study, Eisenberg and colleagues collected data on more than 100,000 men from an insurance claims database between 2001 and 2009. Their average age was 33.

The researchers zeroed in on general health conditions of three groups of males: men diagnosed with infertility, men who didn’t receive an infertility diagnosis and men who had had a vasectomy, who were presumed to be fertile.

The researchers found that infertile men had a 48 percent higher rate of heart disease and about 30 percent higher odds of diabetes, even after compensating for obesity and smoking. They also had higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse, the researchers said.

Moreover, those with the most severe form of infertility had the highest risk of kidney disease and alcohol abuse, Eisenberg said.

The study doesn’t establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between infertility and chronic diseases, however.

But, the researchers speculated that hormonal and/or environmental factors may be involved.

Lower levels of testosterone in infertile men may be linked to higher rates of death and heart disease, they suggested.

Also, exposure to harmful environmental influences during fetal development might lead to both reproductive and general health problems later in life, Eisenberg said. Perhaps some of the same exposures that are related to heart disease later in life also reduce sperm count, he said.

“Thus, when a couple presents for infertility, there may be an opportunity to make a positive impact on a man’s health through an evaluation of his fertility,” Eisenberg said.

Dr. Christine Mullin, director of in vitro fertilization at the Center for Human Reproduction at North Shore-LIJ Health System in Manhasset, N.Y., said it does appear that men faced with infertility also face the potential for other health problems.

“The question really is which comes first, the heart disease or diabetes, or the infertility?” said Mullin, who wasn’t involved with the research.

Infertility affects approximately 15 percent of couples, and male infertility is the cause in about half of all cases, Mullin said.

“Many men are seeing an infertility specialist as their first doctor in their adult lives,” she said. “It is important that these doctors understand that the semen analysis is not only a screening tool to diagnose male infertility but also a means to uncover other health-related issues.”

Infertility can be a warning sign of overall poor health in men, “and as reproductive specialists we need to act as first responders in helping men to achieve optimal health,” Mullin said.

The study findings were published Dec. 7 in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade rumbles through N. Side

CHICAGO (WLS) —

Dozens of motorcycles rumbled down Western Avenue Sunday for the annual Chicago Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade.

Governor Bruce Rauner also took part in the ride, which ended at DeVry University on Chicago’s North Side.

All the riders carried toys that will be donated to children and families in need across the Chicago area.

“This tradition we do every year is one of the great traditions in America,” Rauner said.

Gov. Rauner and his wife are also donating $5,000 to the Toys for Tots program.

The X Factor 2015: Your semi-final video round-up - who is going to make it to Wembley Arena?
