3-D Printing Will Adjustment the Globe

To any individual that hasn’t seen it showed, 3-D printing seems advanced– like the meals that appeared in the Jetsons’ stove at the touch of a keypad. However the technology is rather uncomplicated: It is a small transformative step from shooting skin toner on paper to putting down levels of something much more sizable (such as plastic substance) until the levels amount to an item. But, by allowing an equipment to generate objects of any kind of shape, on the spot and as required, 3-D printing truly is ushering in a brand-new period.

As applications of the innovation broaden and also costs drop, the first big effects is that more items will be manufactured at or near to their factor of acquisition or usage. This might also suggest household-level production of some things. (You’ll pay for basic materials and also the IP– the software apply for any kind of layouts you can not find complimentary on the web.) Except that, numerous products that have actually depended on the scale performances of huge, central plants will certainly be produced in your area. Even if the per-unit production price is greater, it will certainly be greater than balanced out by the removal of delivery and also of barrier stocks. Whereas vehicles today are made by merely a few hundred factories around the globe, they might someday be made in every metropolitan area. Parts could be made at dealerships as well as service center, and also assembly plants could possibly remove the demand for supply chain management by making parts as required.

An additional ramification is that products will certainly be considerably a lot more personalized, since modifying them won’t call for retooling, only tweaking the guidelines in the software. Creativity in conference individuals’ demands will certainly come forward, equally as quality control performed in the age of turning out sameness.

These first-order implications will cause companies all along the supply, production, as well as selling chains to rethink their techniques and operations. And also a second-order ramification will certainly have also higher impact. As 3-D printing holds, the elements that have made China the workshop of the world will certainly lose much of their force.

China has actually gotten outsourced-manufacturing agreements from every fully grown economic situation by pressing the mass-manufacturing version to its restriction. It not just aggregates sufficient demand to develop unparalleled effectiveness of scale but additionally reduces a crucial price: labor. Chinese federal government assistances have been pro-producer at every turn, favoring the development of the country’s makers over the acquiring power as well as living requirements of its consumers.

Under a model of widely dispersed, highly flexible, small production, these challenging advantages come to be liabilities. No workforce can be paid little enough making for the price of delivery throughout seas. And also couple of managers raised in a pro-producer environment have the consumer impulses to compete on modification.

It seems that the Usa and other Western countries, practically despite themselves, will carry out the aged judo technique of making use of a rival’s lack of balance and making its very own huge weight important in its fall.

China won’t be a loser in the new era; like every country, it will certainly have a domestic market to serve on a local basis, as well as its residential market is massive. And also not all items offer themselves to 3-D printing. However China will certainly have to surrender on being the mass-manufacturing powerhouse of the world. The strategy that has given it such political heft won’t offer it in the future.

The fantastic transfer of wide range as well as tasks to the East over the past 20 years might have appeared a decisive tipping factor. However this brand-new modern technology will certainly transform once again exactly how the globe leans.

Motorcycle safety training recommended for even the most seasoned riders

During a recent training session at Ridgewater College, motorcycle safety instructor Scott Beck explained that people of all ages and skill levels can benefit from Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center training programs.

“Any class is good to take every couple of years. It keeps you refreshed,” Beck said.

While people of all ages have been killed in motorcycle crashes this summer, about half of the 41 fatalities involved people aged 50 or older, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

While some may think learning motorcycle safety is vital only for young riders, Beck said training is also vital for older and more seasoned riders.

A number of motorcyclists are choosing to take up riding a second time in their life, sometimes after decades of not riding. Beck encourages people in this type of situation to take a refresher course because even the most experienced riders can avoid death or injury by sharpening their riding skills.

Instructor Rick Loge also teaches motorcycle training at Ridgewater College. During the recent training session, he taught participants many skills, including how to negotiate curves.

This skill is especially important for motorcyclists to master because 17 fatal crashes this summer have involved negotiating a turn, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Travis Johnson of Montevideo said he has been riding motorcycles for years, and decided to participate in the training class to fine-tune his skills.

“It’s a very good confidence booster,” Johnson said.

Beginner classes are recommended for people with a variety of experience levels, even those who have never been on a motorcycle before.

Class participant Trudy Heining of Atwater said she always wanted to take a class because she rides with her husband.

“It’s a great class,” Heining said. “If you’ve never ridden a bike, this is the place to go.”

Beck compared the class to learning how to write.

“Your first skills are like learning the letters of the alphabet, then the riders learn the words and then the whole sentence,” Beck said.

Motorcycle safety classes are available at Ridgewater College campuses in Willmar and Hutchinson.

The Basic Rider course is a two- or three-day program that teaches basic skills. The Confident Rider course is a five-hour program in which riders hone their strategies. Civilian Police Motorcycle courses and Moped Rider courses are also available, according to Ridgewater College’s website.

A complete listing of classes can be viewed at www.ridgewater.edu.

Why do brands bet on menswear?

House of Holland menswear spring/summer 2016

House of Holland menswear spring/summer 2016

31 Jul. 2015

If 2015 sneaks into fashion encyclopedias, one of the highlight topics would be the rising focus that the industry put on menswear: from tradeshows curating new sections to cover this field –e.g.

. Besides, some established brands that traditionally only supply to ladies are going to introduce male collections in the near future.

The most recent announcement has been made by Stradivarius, which belongs to global textile empire Inditex. Planned to launch in 2017, Stradivarius’ masculine line aims to cater young urban men between 20 and 30 –no imagery is available yet-. A bit sooner, Swedish minimal label 5Preview is going to retail its first complete men’s collection with 25 pieces exclusively in the Italian market next spring. If the response is positive, the range might be expanded and introduced to other countries like Japan, Germany and Northern Europe, the areas where the brand is most appreciated. Also Henry Holland, designer behind the hyped brand House of Holland, presented his first dedicated men’s line during London Collections Men last June, which is already available in retail.

5Preview men

5Preview men’s collection SS16

But, how can you extend a woman’s label to a male’s one successfully? First and foremost, designers should not dismiss the visual iconic elements for which the brand is known for. Following the example of House of Holland, the male’s range doesn’t miss any of the elements that characterize his creations for ladies: bold and eclectic prints and playful pattern mixes achieved through a wise layering. It’s hard to judge the success of the adventure yet. However, once a formula has already proven to be successful, it’s easy to just follow the footsteps. In the case of 5Preview, founder Emeli Mårtensson explains: “We started as a unisex brand: bold messages, printed items and texturized garments are part of our DNA. So, we felt our clothes were easy to translate to menswear and maybe guys might be tired of plain shirts already!”

But why is there suddenly such a hype of menswear? As all vital topics in life, there’s a mix of reasons to explain this phenomenon. First of all, we have to recall here our report about the “Menaissance” phenomenon. The term was coined to sum up in one word –of course, a French-sounding one- the faster growth rhythmus that men’s fashion has undergone in the last years compared to womenswear. For example, according to research firm Mintel the men’s fashion market will grow by 27% between 2013 and 2018 to reach £16.4 billion in the UK (Value in 2013: £12.9 billion). In addition, the market is broadening its offerings in order to better satisfy the ascending fashion curiosity and trend towards experimentation. Thus, well-performing brands are willing to cake a piece of this.

To shed more light on why brands do bet on menswear, Agostino Poletto, deputy general manager at Pitti Immagine –organizer of the successful Pitti Uomo fair– shared with us some insights that might explain this industry shift:

Agostino Poletto, deputy general manager at Pitti Immagine

Agostino Poletto, deputy general manager at Pitti Immagine

Menswear is now a hot topic in the fashion industry. How do you explain the hype around it?
First of all the development of big Asian markets such as China and Korea, which gave a very strong impulse to men’s fashion because traditionally in these countries it is the man who is the first to satisfy his needs in terms of status and elegance. Then, there is the accessory factor: the boom of fashion accessories has favored the men’s sector diffusely more than the women’s one which is more limited to the “it item” phenomenon (mostly tied to that specific bag model or famous brand). And, finally, there has been a general men’s shifting of interest toward the product rather than the brand –a behavior that is now also spreading in the women’s market- which gave impulse to a significant growth in terms of men’s fashion.
Beyond all this there has also been the recent “discovery” done by contemporary men that is getting conscious that feeling smart is important first of all for themselves even before than for others and this is not diminishing their masculinity.

In your opinion, what can be still improved within the menswear market?
I think brands and companies could put a greater attention to the distribution of their product. Many companies often don’t care much about where their products are sold. The aim to reach high revenues often blurs the quality image of the brand. Channels like outlets should be managed differently and controlled more. And also online sales – that certainly represent a great opportunity for enlarging one’s action and for rooting in international markets – have to be managed by expert insiders.

Americans are Hanging on to Their Cars Longer

Posted Friday, July 31st 2015 @ 6am  by iHeartMedia’s Dale Forbis

American consumers are buying new cars in record numbers, but we’re apparently still driving the old ones until they fall apart. The trick is, they don’t fall apart as much.

KTRH Car Pro Jerry Reynolds says the reason is simple.

“Cars are just better today than they have been,” the KTRH Car Pro says. “This is a trend we have been seeing in the industry for over a decade and I think the results of that are just showing up right now.”

The average car speeding down American highways is 11 and a half years old. That’s sets a record.

“We’ll probably knock that number down,” he says. “That’s a record at 11 and a half years. I suspect that number will go down.”

The numbers mean the people buying new cars are also hanging on to the old ones. Unlike the 1970s, some of those cars are just getting broken in when the odometer passes 100,000 miles.

Eskenazi Health hosts annual Men's Health Fair

For a variety of reasons many men do not enjoy going to the doctor. Whether it is fear of a diagnosis, embarrassment or a feeling of being invincible, men often skip regular medical appointments. Studies have shown for years that when it comes to their health, men trail the opposite sex in nearly every category.

On Aug. 8, Eskenazi Health hopes to change this trend and help men receive the medical attention they need. The 17th annual Men’s Health Fair will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Eskenazi Health Center Blackburn, located at 2700 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. As an added bonus, free screenings will also be available for women.

“We know men often don’t receive regular health checks for a variety of reasons. What better gift can you give than encouraging your father, brother or son to come out and get the important care they need and also get the care you need, too,” said Dr. Delise Webber, a physician at Eskenazi Health Center Blackburn. “This weekend we encourage men, and women, too, to come out and get the important care they need to stay healthy.”

Health care professionals will be on hand to answer questions and provide free screenings for men and women during the fair. Screenings offered include blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, dental, and HIV and STD screenings.

The top health threats for men include heart disease and cancer. Most men’s health threats are largely preventable. By making healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising and refraining from smoking, many men can prevent future diseases.

Webber said even if a patient has visited a doctor recently, the event offers a chance to follow up on blood pressure, cholesterol and wellness information. She said if the readings raise a red flag, referrals and follow-up appointments can be arranged.

Sponsors for this year’s Men’s Health Fair include Eskenazi Health Center, Marion County Public Health Department and MDwise. Kenny’s Barbershop will once again provide free haircuts.

Eskenazi Health Center Blackburn provides a medical home for families in the areas of internal and family medicine, pediatrics, adolescent care, family planning, dental care and social services. The center is one of 11 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Robin Wright calls for a feminist revolution

Robin Wright has led the charge for a “feminist revolution” saying that the world needs a female Che Guevara.

The House of Cards star opened up on the subject of feminism, saying she is glad gender equality is being discussed in the public domain, but says there is a long way to go because it’s still “a man’s world”.

Speaking to ES Magazine, the actress said: “We need a revolution, we really do. Thank God gender equality is finally being talked about and making news, but we need a female Che Guevara.

“It is a man’s world. Most industries are a man’s world. But when you break it down it’s women [who do the work]. But they don’t necessarily get the credit.”

Wright will be directing four episodes of the next season of Netflix’s House of Cards this year, which she had always hoped to do but let her insecurities get in the way.

She explained: “[Directing] was in the back of my head: one day. But then you think, ‘Yeah, I want to, but I could never.’ And that’s just fear. And a lot of that, I think, was being a female in this industry.

“I was programmed into thinking: ‘I am going to be lesser; they [men] are going to think that I am lesser."”

Motorcycle inventories mount at dealerships as dispatches stay high

Motorcycle inventories have risen at dealerships across the country as companies continue to despatch high volumes despite poor demand, helping them show impressive sales at least on paper.

Companies report data of despatches to dealers and not final sales to buyers.

The trend also means that motorcycle makers may have to brace for a dull festive season.

The unsold stocks at Hero dealerships, for instance, have gone up 2.5 times from 15 days (which is the norm for Hero) to two months, said executives at Hero dealerships declining to be identified.

photo

Following a circular from the company a month ago to make more room for stocks, some have bought additional warehouse space to accommodate unsold stocks, said the dealers.

In an email response, a Hero MotoCorp spokesperson conceded that the inventories are high, adding that the company has been taken corrective measures.

“Owing to a sluggishness in the market, the industry had built up stocks,” said the spokesperson, adding that the inventories are currently at about five weeks.

“Going forward, we will continue to adjust our production and inventory levels as per market requirements,” the spokesperson added.

Hero sold 1,600,552 motorcycles and scooters in the three months to June, down 4% from a year ago, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, or Siam.

Yadvinder Singh Guleria, senior vice-president, sales and marketing, at HMSI, said that while the unsold stocks are at less than one month at dealerships for both motorcycles and scooters, the sales of motorcycles have been a drag.

The inventory levels for motorcycles have risen to about six weeks, he said, attributing it to a drop in the sales of the so-called mileage or economy segment.

The sales of such motorcycles dropped 3.2% to 1,759,153 units in the three months to June, according to Siam.

One out of three motorcycles sold in India belongs to this segment and a majority of these sales comes from markets that are beyond the top 15 to 20 cities.

With rural demand taking a hit due to deficient rainfall and a poor crop yield last year and the unseasonal rainfall this year that damaged crops, motorcycles sales have been declining.

“The market for 100-110 cc motorcycles have been dropping consistently, showing no signs of revival since November 2014,” said Guleria, adding that demand may pick up in the second quarter if rainfall picks up.

HMSI, which draws close to one-fourth of its sales from the rural markets, saw its motorcycle sales skid 10% to 381,493 units in the three months to June.

Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto, which was underperforming the motorcycle market till recently, has seen a pickup.

Following the launch of a new Platina (electric start) and CT100 earlier this year, the Pune-based firm has not only arrested a decline in sales volumes but has also grown marketshare from 17.74% to 17.91%.

Eric Vas, president (motorcycles) at the company, said Bajaj Auto had been matching wholesale despatches with retail sales over the past year.

“As the market is under pressure, it (inventory) has gone up by a few days,” said Vas, adding that the inventories are at about 30-35 days. In the case of the newly launched Pulsar range of motorcycles, the company has a 40-day waiting period, he said.

According to Nitesh Sharma, an analyst at brokerage Phil Capital, motorcycle sales during the festive season will be guided by the spread and volume of rainfall in the remaining two months.

Sharma expects the overall two-wheeler market to expand 5-6% by the end of the fiscal, led by scooters, which will continue to outpace the growth rates seen in the motorcycle segment.

Guleria said having read the shift in demand from motorcycles to scooters early, the local arm of the Japanese two-wheeler maker took steps such as investing in a flexible manufacturing line and expanding reach.

Both the initiatives have helped the company in reporting steady sales growth.

HMSI despatched 1,014,262 units of two wheelers in the April-June period led by a 20% increase in scooter sales.

How to do fashion the Michael Kors way | Life | Malay Mail Online

Designer Michael Kors and models pose at the Michael Kors Spring 2016 Presentation during New York Fashion Week: Men’s at Spring Studios New York July 15, 2015. – AFP picDesigner Michael Kors and models pose at the Michael Kors Spring 2016 Presentation during New York Fashion Week: Men’s at Spring Studios New York July 15, 2015. – AFP picNEW YORK, July 28 — On the second day of the first New York Fashion Week: Men’s, before most people in the room had sipped from their first cup of coffee, Michael Kors was starting his men’s spring/summer 2016 presentation at Spring Studios with a story about his assistant’s multicoloured nails. It was an odd exchange to hold with his invited group of more than 30 high- level menswear journalists and retailers. That’s why I loved it.

The early morning pseudo-industry chatter was pure and random; Kors is notoriously funny. But most of all, his non-show shows are simply the best way to experience a men’s collection.

During the next 20 or so minutes, the designer personally walked us through his 27-look collection, piece-by-piece, on a group of models — a process that allows me, as an editor, to really understand his vision for the season. The clothes come alive because of the stories Kors tells, the pictures he paints.

In his own words: “island life,” a “hybrid of a nautical hippie,” “a little Peter Beard running throughout and Picasso stripes, “ and what guys have no doubt been drinking “way too much of while on an island sojourn.” (That’s the dusty, rosé-hued poplin pieces for you.)

Of the last, all-black look — which included a utility anorak and modern track pant with a light, chunky knit for summer — he recounted: “I told Ben [Eidem, a Swedish model and his muse] that if this was a women’s presentation, he would be the Karlie Kloss, the one fighting for that finale look. Although she would just tell me she’s closing the show. And, of course, he’s shorter than her, too!”

That’s not all he had to say. After the tents and venues on the West Side closed down, I caught up with Kors for a more intimate tête-à-tête. Below are his thoughts on men’s fashion, as well as some relaxed, yet luxe, style tips. (Hint: Start with the shoes.)

Congratulations on showing another standout collection at the inaugural New York Fashion Week: Men’s. It seems to be a phenomenally simple and efficient way to present a collection. So why do you think other designers have been hesitant to embrace this format?

I think it depends on your personality and who you design a collection for. I’ve always loved trunk shows — I wish I could still do as many as when I first started designing because I like talking to people about the clothes, seeing their reactions, and hearing their questions. I don’t design my clothes for the runway or for a show. I design them to be worn.

You’ve also been vocal in saying that menswear should not be on the runway — or it isn’t serviced by being presented that way. Can you explain your thoughts there?

Menswear is in the details.

The truth is, you’re taking the favourite pieces that every guy already has in his wardrobe, and each season you’re figuring out what it is that makes their favourite new — the new white shirt, the new navy blazer — and usually it has to do with the fabric and the construction. You can’t see those things in a show; you can’t see the nuances.

Menswear is tactile, you have to see it up close and feel it. We did these reversible totes for spring, and if we did a regular show, you would have never known they were reversible. Those types of details get lost on a runway, and they’re important.

This season you continue to service that elevated hybrid of dressing up and dressing down. What are the first steps in a guy achieving this look if he’s been stuck on one end of the spectrum for so long?

Ease into it. If you’re used to being in a traditional suit all day, then a white linen pant and henley might be a little too drastic. But a more relaxed suit — something unlined, maybe, with the wrinkle built in — is a stepping stone. You’re still polished, you’re still in a suit, but it’s more laid-back.

As your collections show, you’re a stickler for cross-seasonal outerwear and knitwear. Why do you think both of those categories are important for designers to design and sell year-long?

Honestly, the weather is insane. You almost never know what you’re going to get in any given season anymore. Then, in the summer in New York, even if it’s hot, everything is so over-air conditioned that you need a sweater inside — and vice-versa in the winter. And you have to factor in that people are travelling more than ever before, so they need clothes that can span climates. No one is travelling with trunks anymore — the clothes need to be packable and they need to go everywhere our customer is going.

You’re also an early adapter of men’s sandals with tailoring and roomier atypical silhouettes — two trends I think most guys are still reluctant to attempt. How would you suggest a guy experiment with some of these more advanced style elements that frankly, scare them?

Take it a piece at a time. If you never wear sandals, start with a heavier sandal, something with substance, on the weekends. Soon you’ll be wearing them with a trouser and a linen sweater at the office. On the other hand, if you live in sneakers, try a rugged boat shoe. They’re still comfortable, but they’re a little more polished. I don’t believe in clothes that are too extremely oversized for most men, but I do like the idea of ease and comfort, and I think most men do, too.

Your collections always have a well-travelled element to them and kind of exemplify man at his off-duty best. What and where inspired this season?

I kept thinking about island life and this kind of laid- back ease that I think every man craves — especially when the weather gets warm. We wanted to bring that relaxed attitude that you find in Capri, or in Catalina, and make it something you can also wear in Manhattan. Today, people are more casual in the city and more dressed-up on vacation, and this collection caters to that idea.

Any personal travel plans before the women’s collections pull your attention back to New York, come September?

This summer we’ll be spending a lot of time on Long Island, as I love it when we finally have true beach weather here in New York. And then Capri, of course, at the end of the season. — Bloomberg

IMSA: Delays for American Lexus GT3 program?

IMSA’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship is getting closer to switching its GT Daytona class over to the full GT3 specifications, and could start the 2016 season with one of its incoming manufacturers on the grid.

As RACER detailed in May, Toyota’s Lexus brand has extended invitations to a select group of American teams to run its GTD program with the RC F GT3 in 2016, and as multiple sources have recently confirmed, it appears the V8-powered car will not make its intended debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January.

Recent tests and race outings with the RC F GT3 have highlighted the need to continue developing the two-door coupe for a longer period than was previously expected. The car’s European racing debut earlier in the month at the legendary Nurburgring circuit (pictured) saw the factory RC F GT3s of Farnbacher Racing and Emil Frey Racing post race laps that were more than 11 seconds off of the class-leading Mercedes-AMG GT3. And in Japan, where the RC F GT3 competes on shorter circuits in the Super GT GT300 category, the car has been up to 2.5 seconds off pole.

Despite initial plans to contest the entire championship, a rollout after Round 1 at Daytona, and possibly after Round 2 at the 12 Hours of Sebring, has been mentioned. Provided IMSA’s next TUDOR Championship calendar is similar to the 2015 schedule, Lexus fans could have to wait until May 2016 to see the RC F GT3 run in anger.

With the car’s relative lack of pace to front-running GT3 machinery, rushing the new Lexus into the TUDOR Championship – which opens each season with its two longest races – would be far from optimal.

“There’s no reason to run the cars before they are ready,” said one veteran expected to play a role in the program.

The next piece of major news for the program is expected to come in the next six weeks as teams wait to hear if they’ve been chosen to spearhead the TUDOR Championship effort with direct support from Toyota Racing Development USA.

Engaging men on East Side could be key for baby, mom's health - The News Journal

Former East Side resident Daroun Jamison considers this a powerful question: What does it mean to be a black man?

Before it can be answered, he said, you have to take race out of it. A man has to recognize his personal belief system first, Jamison, 38, said.

“If a person doesn’t have that definition, then what do they have to work toward?”

Jamison and neighbors discussed such questions during a community retreat with researchers from Christiana Care, Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and the University of Delaware.

The retreat focused on bringing light to pressing health issues on the East Side, especially surrounding infant mortality and the roles fathers play.

The infant mortality rate is over 14.4 per 1,000 births for the community, nearly double the state average.

Babies in Delaware are born too early and weigh too little, not because of medical reasons, said Dr. Iman Sharif, a pediatrician with Nemours. Mothers are dealing with chronic stress from poverty and volatile life experiences.

An analysis of Medicaid data from 2011 to 2012 found that women from the East Side under age 45 visited a New Castle County emergency department four or more times for complications related to pregnancy and childbirth

Over 40 percent recorded fatigue, herpes gestation, insufficient weight gain and premature labor.

While we don’t want to dissuade people from getting help, said Dr. Karyl Rattay, director of the Delaware Division of Public Health, those are conditions that could be discussed with a gynecologist or prenatal provider earlier so emergency room trips could be prevented.

Rattay said that enforces the importance of home visit programs such as Parents as Teachers, Healthy Families America and Healthy Women, Healthy Babies.

Healthy Women Healthy Babies targets African American women or women with risk factors such as depression or diabetes. Last year, 1,471 women from the East Side participated in the program.

Connecting women to services will only help so much, said Rysheema Dixon, community outreach specialist with Henrietta Johnson. Fathers need to be part of the equation, too.

Jamison said he had many friends growing up that were young fathers. One friend had two children by the time he was 16.

How can you provide for someone when you are a teenager without a stable job?

Some find it easier to disappear from family life, which can have detrimental effects.

Jamison doesn’t have any children, but he recalls his relationship with his father as a complicated one.

At one point, he was on track to be a junior deacon. But life got in the way. Living on welfare made money tight. His family was eventually evicted from their home. He dropped out of school and began living on his own. Soon after he began selling drugs.

Then the unthinkable happened. “I wound up shooting someone,” Jamison said. It was three days before he turned 18.

Jamison turned himself in and spent 16 years in prison. It was there that he had a change of heart and mind.

While working on an art project for a substance abuse class he stumbled across an article about a man who was incarcerated and became a chef after taking culinary classes behind bars. Another man in that article started a publishing business in an urban community when he got out.

It gave him hope and made him want to succeed, he said. Now, four years out, he lives in New Castle and is taking critical thinking and entrepreneurship classes at Delaware Technical Community College in Wilmington. He’s also working on a manuscript documenting his childhood in Wilmington to where he is now.

It takes time and introspection, but it is possible to change your life path, Jamison said. It’s especially important for young fathers. Sometimes being present, is more than just providing.

If you have a daughter, Jamison said, “be the person she can talk to in her life.”

Three injured in chain-reaction motorcycle crash

A chain-reaction motorcycle crash injured three people Sunday afternoon, sending two by helicopter to trauma centers in Midland and Lansing.

Larry Huge Bates, 77, of Lansing was flown by Aero Med to Sparrow Hospital for treatment of head injuries and was not wearing a helmet, Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said.

Tammy Sue Gay, 47, of St. Johns was flown by LifeNet to MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland for treatment and was wearing a helmet when the crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday on West Blanchard Road west of South Coldwater Road in Rolland Township.

Larry Alan Gay, 72, of Portland had minor injuries and refused treatment; he was not wearing a helmet, the sheriff said.

Larry Gay, Tammy Gay, Bates and another motorcyclist were traveling west on West Blanchard Road when the lead biker slowed down because of rough pavement, the sheriff said.

Larry Gay, who was operating a 2003 Harley Davidson Electra-Glide behind the lead motorcyclist, also slowed down, but Tammy Gay, driving a 2007 Harley Davidson Dyna, didn’t see the others slow down and hit Larry Gay’s motorcycle, the sheriff said.

In an effort to avoid running into the motorcycles in front of him, Bates ended up laying his down.

All three were thrown from their motorcycles, Mioduszewski said.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the accident.

Isabella County Central Dispatch, state police from the Mt. Pleasant post, the Millbrook-Rolland Fire Department and Mobile Medical Response assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
