When you’ve chosen “Money” as a nickname, it’s unlikely you’re going to be shy when showing off wealth. But Floyd Mayweather has taken flaunting to a whole new level on social media recently and, naturally, Manny Pacquiao wasn’t too impressed.
Mayweather posted the following picture on Twitter which shows him standing in front of a fleet of super-cars as well as his private jet:

According to Hamish Mackay of the Mail Online, the cars alone—which include two £1.5 million Bugatti Veyrons—are worth a staggering £5.45 million. But when you consider, according to Forbes (h/t Mackay’s piece) Mayweather earned £66.1 million in 2014, it is little surprise he has quite the collection.
Amid all this brash flashiness, it’s easy to forget Money remains the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, and he’s being perpetually encouraged by Pacquiao to put that status to the test. Indeed, Manny posted a comparatively modest picture on his Instagram account and implored the American to stop showing off and talk boxing:

The prospects of a superfight taking place have reportedly been given a timely boost, too. According to Jeff Powell of the Mail Online, Golden Boy promoter Oscar de la Hoya has reached out to his Top Rank rival Bob Arum in an attempt to make nice, and now the pair look set to schedule a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto for the spring.

According to Powell, the hope is that this peacemaking will eventually pave the way for a showdown between Money and Manny. De La Hoya—who has been the facilitating promoter for Mayweather’s recent bouts—would be set for more of a windfall should his man Amir Khan tackle the undefeated American, but he’s admitted it’s about time Mayweather and Pacquiao squared off.
“As a boxing fan first and foremost I understand completely that Floyd versus Manny is the fight all of us most want to see,” said De La Hoya, per Powell’s piece. “It has to happen soon, for the good of boxing.”

Pacquiao has been unrelenting in his desire to fight Mayweather and, as 2014 became 2015, the Filipino sensation again underlined his willingness to step into the ring with Money:

Encouragingly for fight fans, Mayweather himself showed some initiative to make the bout happen toward the back end of last year after calling out Pacquiao in an interview with Showtime (h/t Dan Rafael of ESPN.com). With the rival promoters making peace, the superfight is starting to become an increasingly tantalising proposition.

It’s vital the fight happens this year, though. Each man is an icon in his own right and both command the gravitas to make this the highest grossing bout in history. But already, both Mayweather and Pacquiao are arguably a little past their peak. If negotiations were to draw on much longer, it may not be the spectacle it could and should be.
With promoters getting along and Manny unashamed in his desire for the fight to happen, the decision ultimately looks as though it’s going to rest with Mayweather. If he’s got the bottle to match his unfathomable fortune, then 2015 could well be the year that this longstanding grudge is finally settled.
