On Friday, January 9, 2015 at approximately 2100 hours the Broussard Police Department responded to a major crash at the intersection of E. Main St (LA 182) and S. Girouard Road involving two motorcycles and a vehicle.  Upon officer’s arrival they observed a 2006 Volkswagon Bug disabled in the intersection and one motorcycle in the roadway then a second motorcycle off the roadway.  Both drivers of the motorcycles had been ejected and were laying a short distance away from each motorcycle.

Through the investigation it was determined that the driver of the Volkswagon Bug (Jacob Romero, 21 YOA, of Breaux Bridge, LA) was traveling eastbound on E. Main St.(LA 182) and was approaching the intersection of S. Girouard Rd when the passenger stated to turn suddenly, as Romero turned left he struck the two motorcycles that were traveling westbound on E. Main St. He stated he didn’t see the motorcycles.  The driver of the first motorcycle (2006 Harley Davidson); Scott Bonin, 34 YOA, of New Iberia, LA was ejected and came to rest in the grassy area near the motorcycle.  Bonin, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to a local hospital initially with major injuries, still talking to emergency personnel, but he later died as a result of his injuries at the hospital. The driver of the second motorcycle (1997 Harley Davidson) Ryan Maturin, 33 YOA of New Iberia, LA was also ejected and came to rest in the roadway just past his motorcycle.  Maturin was wearing a helmet and was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.  Romero was not injured and was wearing his seatbelt.

Romero was cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic when turning left at an intersection.

Toxicology results are pending to determine alcohol usage if any.
