“We want to make it a social event within the Auto Show,” said Larry Carl, CEO of the Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Kansas City. “We’re offering something to everyone from tyke to tycoon. If you can’t find a car of your choice, you’re not looking very hard. We’ve got everything from a Mini Cooper to a Maserati.”
All of the locally produced cars are on display, from the Ford F-150 and Ford Transit, to the newly redesigned Chevrolet Malibu and the Buick LaCrosse.
Ford Motor Co. has the largest display at this year’s Auto Show by far, giving Kansas City its first live look at the 2017 Ford Raptor truck and the Ford F-350 Super Duty truck.
If you’re looking for luxury, there is plenty to see. The BMW area features a 2016 i8, which offers everything from neck warmers to automatic parking distance control and a leather engine cover. The car will set you back a pile of cash, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $155,295.
Maybe you’re not a BMW guy and Porsche is more your style. There is a beautiful 2015 911 Carrera 4S All Wheel Drive Cabriolet. It’s a sleek and comfortable convertible with a 400-horsepower engine that can take you from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and reach a top track speed of 182 mph. It’s got a $137,250 price tag.
Maybe you prefer American muscle cars. You can check out a 2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium Coupe with a 5.0-liter, V8 engine with 6-speed manual transmission. It generates 435 horsepower at 6500 RPM.
If you’re more into Dodge, there are a few great examples, including a plum-colored 2016 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker model with a 5.7-liter V8 engine that generates 375 horsepower.
If you like classic cars, the Kansas City Auto Show offers several to peek your curiosity. Right by the entrance to the show is a 1932 REO Royal, designed and built by Ransom Eli Olds. He founded Olds Motor Vehicle Co. in 1897, producing vehicles that ran on steam, electricity and gasoline, selling it two years later to Samuel Smith. He designed the Curved Dash Runabout, the first mass-produced, low-priced American motor vehicle. He was later pushed out of the company and then formed his own called REO Motor Car Co.
Other really interesting historical vehicles to see are four fire engines from the Independence 76 Fire Company, a not-for-profit devoted to preserving fire fighting history in the Missouri suburb. The earliest model is a 1928 American La France.
The auto show runs through Sunday. Tickets are $11 for adults and $6 for kids (ages 8-12).
