With a 200 horsepower engine and 168 lb.ft of torque — almost twice what the Ducati Panigale has — the Lightning LS-218 is appropriately named. Right now, it’s the fastest electric motorcycle on the planet.

Last October we heard from San-Francisco-based Mission Motors, who was planning to roll out a street-legal version of their Mission R and Mission RS motorcycles, which the company said could go 150 miles per hour. Looks like they’ve already been trumped by Lightning Motorcycles.

Last year, the LS-218 won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with a 20-second victory. Over the weekend, it showed up at the Quail Motorsport Gathering in Carmel, Calif.

The  495-pound motorcycle has a direct drive system, which means no clutch or transmission. Customers will have a couple of different options for battery power, from 12 kWh to 20 kWh, which has a range of 180 miles. With just a 30-minute charge, we may see start seeing more speed freaks on two wheels than on four. Zoom, zoom.
