After dominating the Arenacross Championship at the start of the year, P&H Motorcycles and Marcus Phelps have proved unbeatable once again as they clinched the Big Wheel 85 title at Pro Nationals Motocross Festival. Since its inception in 2007 Britain’s biggest motocross series, Pro National Motocross has become an extreme sports festival in Weston Super Mare and has grown to be one of Europe’s most high profile motocross championships.
Kicking the weekend off in style, and despite heavy overnight rain delaying the start, Marcus took top spot in qualifying as he set a stunning 2:17.672 on his fifth lap to head the timesheets by 0.622s ahead of his nearest rival. Confident for a good result, Marcus and the P&H Motorcycles KTM enjoyed a strong start in the opening race, heading into the first turn in third place. Defying his young age, Marcus kept his cool and began chipping away to the race leaders and after taking the lead was able to eke out a 3.7s lead by the chequered flag.
An uncharacteristically slow start in the second of three races saw Marcus drop back to fifth, however a stunning run over the course of the remaining five laps saw him cruise to victory by over 18 seconds to take a commanding lead going into the final race of the event. With the Championship in his sights, Marcus rode an impressively mature race in the third and final race of the Pro Nationals event to take third place and secure his second title of the year.
Speaking after the event, Marcus Phelps said “It was another incredibly tough event but I couldn’t fault the P&H KTM. The track in particular was very demanding but after qualifying in first place I was confident we would be able to secure some strong finishes so it was great to be able to win the opening race. I had a bit of a slow start in the second race and dropped back but that just fired me up to take another win so I got my head down and went for it.
In the final race I was conscious of the Championship so played it safe to take third place and my second title of the year! I’m pumped to have won the Pro National event and am definitely hungry to win even more. I just want to say a massive thanks to P&H Motorcycles for preparing the bike and for everyone who has believed in me and supported me.“
