Most popular 'American-built' cars

To be deemed as ”American,” cars built in the US must have domestic-parts content of 75 per cent or higher, according to their National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

With American brands’ parts supply and some assembly coming in Canada, Mexico and overseas, this means that most of the top American favourites bear Japanese badges as they have more ”local” content.

Here’s our five:

FORD F-150

Ford F-150

Built in Dearborn, Michigan and Claycomo, Missouri, the F-150 is the only American branded vehicle to reach the domestic-parts content of more than 75 per cent for our top five, something GM and Chrysler couldn’t pass in order to be called ”American Made”.

TOYOTA CAMRY

Toyota Camry

America’s favourite sedan is built in Georgetown, Kentucky and Lafayette, Indiana, and soon, that’s where we’ll be getting our Camrys from too. The Camry fights it out with the Civic and Accord for top sedan spot as favourite American-built sedan.

HONDA ODYSSEY

Honda Odyssey

Put together in Lincoln, Alabama, the up to eight-seater US market Odyssey is very different from our own Japanese-sourced model. It options V6 power and has more American assembly and content than its big three American-branded MPVs.

TOYOTA SIENNA

Toyota Sienna

Second to the Odyssey in what the Americans call the Minivan market, the Princeton, Indiana-made Sienna people-mover is a spin-off created from the Camry platform, which also spawns coupe, convertible, SUV models from the same hard-points.

TOYOTA TUNDRA

Toyota Tundra

After the all conquering F-150, this is America’s second-favourite officially US-built truck, Toyota’s San Antonio, Texas built Tundra, a sort of super-sized HiLux to put it in a New Zealand context with V6 and V8 engines and XXXL-sized cabins and decks.

The rest of the favourite American-built top-10 are: 6 – Toyota Avalon (Georgetown, Kentucky), 7 – Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (Bowling Green, Kentucky), 8 – Honda Ridgeline (Lincoln, Alabama), 9 – Honda Crosstour (East Liberty, Ohio), 10. Dodge Viper (Detroit, Michigan).
