GLENS FALLS — Crandall Public Library cardholders can now download popular digital periodicals for free under a new partnership with RBdigital, a Maryland information technology provider.
“So it’s really a great tool for people on the go,” said Guinevere Forshey, the library’s director of innovation and patron experience.
Library cardholders can log on to Zinio, “the world’s largest newsstand,” at www.rbdigital.com/crandalllibraryny to get unlimited, simultaneous access to digital periodicals the library subscribes to.
“We’ve ordered roughly 40 titles of magazines, and they are all in digital format,” Forshey said.
Some periodicals, such as Newsweek and PCWorld, are no longer published in traditional print versions.
Other periodicals are duplicates of print periodicals the library subscribes to, but the digital versions have additional audio and video content.
There is no time limit on access to the digital versions.
“Once you download them, they’re yours to keep,” Forshey said.
Using the Zinio magazine service requires the creation of two free online accounts — a library Zinio account to view the library’s collection and a Zinio.com account to read magazines online or via an app on a mobile communication device.
The magazine downloading service is the latest of several library digital format programs.
Library card holders can download E-books through the library website for 7 to 14 days using OverDrive, Freading and TumbleBooks.
The library has circulated 171,028 copies of E-books and 71,405 copies of audiobooks through OverDrive the past five years, said library Director Kathy Naftaly.
E-books as a percentage of monthly circulation has increased from 2.98 percent in June 2011 to 5.21 percent this June, she said.
Library card holders can download up to 3 music selections per week, for an unlimited time frame, using Freegal.
About 7 million songs are available.
The library has provided 26,966 music downloads since April 2011.
