Officials say the car is an American Red Cross Biomed blood donation vehicle.
According to the responding fire crew, a man with the organization was moving cars to wash them. While moving one of the cars, its horn started sounding and the man got out of the vehicle.
That’s when it burst into flames.
Fire captain Don Gurkin says the cause of the fire is under investigation, yet early indications point to an electrical problem.
Gurkin says Greenville Fire and Rescue responds to this type of incident often.
“If you find something, see something wrong with your car, go and get a mechanic to look at it, get it checked,” said Gurkin. “Things like this can occur pretty quickly with a car.”
Fortunately, no one was injured.
Officials tell 9 On Your Side the fire truck used all of its water supply, which is rare, even for car fires.
Pitt County American Red Cross executive director, Lynwood Roberson says the Pitt County chapter and Biomed are separate divisions in the Red Cross. We are waiting for a comment from the Biomed representative.
