Tests Men Need to Stay Healthy

Most men know they need to get a prostate exam as they get older, but they may not know their risk for another type of cancer, specific to males. Here’s a look at the tests  men should get to take charge of their health.

Dr. Steven Lamm says men need to take charge of their health from the beginning. He suggests that in their 20s and 30s, men establish a relationship with a primary doctor, get baseline numbers for blood pressure and cholesterol, and make sure immunizations are up to date.

He also recommends testicular exams, and notes that men in their 20’s and 30’s have a higher risk of testicular cancer.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in U.S. men, so men in their 30s and 40s should know their risks. He says, “you really want to know that your blood pressure is normal, that your cholesterol is normal, and if you are overweight, establish a program for weight loss.”

Guidelines recommend against routinely using a PSA test to screen for prostate cancer, but some doctors recommend a baseline test at 40.

When men reach 50, it’s time to start colon cancer screening. Lung cancer screenings are also recommended at 55 for heavy former or current smokers.

Doctor Lamm says it’s critical for men to check in with their doctor to make good decisions about screening. “You need to personalize the testing based on the patient’s personal history, family history and their own concerns,” he explains.

Experts say it’s also important to have your hearing and eye sight checked.
