First responders were called to the scene, near the Painted Rock exit, just after 5:45 p.m.
Troopers say that is where two motorcycles had been riding together in the left lane, when they attempted to cross into the right lane.
One of the motorcycle riders noticed a car in that lane and attempted to swerve back into the left lane.
As a result, troopers say that rider then lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other rider did not crash and is uninjured.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is also seeking the driver of the black vehicle that had been traveling in the right lane. Troopers do not believe it made contact with the motorcycle, but believe the driver was a witness.
All witnesses are being asked to call NHP dispatch immediately, at 687-0400.
Both eastbound lanes of I-80 remain closed near the Painted Rock exit, and motorists in the area should expect severe delays until at least 9 p.m.
