In response to the letters by Robert Steffes (“Motorcycle Noise,” May 28) and Al Duerig (“Motorcycles Need to Be Seen, Not Heard, More Widely,” June 2), I agree that people do not like their sleep disturbed by noise or other distractions. While I will agree that many motorcycles (mine included), have louder than stock exhaust systems, for the most part, one only hears the noise from said motorcycles for a short amount of time.
Where is their outrage at the many other things that cause noise pollution in our lives? Most lawn mowers make much more noise for a much longer period than my motorcycle. I have a neighbor whose lawn tractor is extremely loud, and he runs it in our neighborhood for 45 minutes to an hour.
Loud trucks, construction equipment, barking dogs, etc., all create equal or more noise than a passing motorcycle.
I am cognizant that people may be trying to sleep at any given time, and when I leave my housing plan, I make sure to do it as quietly as possible.
If one wants to complain about noise pollution, please treat all sources equally. Don’t single out one source, complain of them all.
