No motorcycle stunts, noise on New Year's Eve

The provincial government imposed on Wednesday a ban on one-wheeling and riding motorcycles without silencers on New Year’s Eve to prevent accidents and public nuisance.


The home department issued a notification in this connection imposing Section-144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.


It read, “The calendar year 2015 is going to end. The citizens and juveniles of the metropolis celebrate New Year’s Night with enthusiasm and usually ride motorcycles on one wheel and without silencers and have reportedly caused casualties and fatal accidents in the past. To prevent such acts of nuisance and disturbance to public, it is expedient to prohibit the above mentioned activities. The Government of Sindh in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 144(6) Cr PC hereby imposes a complete ban on plying of motorcycles on one wheel and without silencer with effect from Dec 31, 2015 to Jan 1, 2016 in the Karachi Division.”


In pursuance of Section 195(1) (a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, SHOs will be authorised to register complaints under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code for violating Section 144.


Traffic plan


For New Year’s Eve, the Karachi police have planned the deployment of 4,100 personnel in the city to maintain law and order.


A ban on carrying of weapons and celebratory gunfire in the air will be imposed in the city. Besides, traffic disruptions and early closure of commercial activities (shops, restaurants, businesses, petrol pumps and public places) in Clifton and DHA is anticipated.


Road closures


1. The road from Korangi to Akhtar Colony leading to Sea View will be blocked on the night of December 31, the Dolmen Mall will be closed at 6pm and the DHA and Clifton roads will also be blocked using containers.


2. The roads leading to Bilawal House from Boat Basin and from Sunset Boulevard to Punjab Chowrangi will be completely blocked for traffic. The diversion route for commuters is Korangi Road.


3. The commuters heading to Khayaban-e-Ittehad from Expressway will be diverted to Korangi Road, Sharea -Faisal, Club Chowk, Regent Chowk, Teen Talwar, Do Talwar, 26th Street, and then take a right at McDonalds, Sea View to reach their destinations.


The residents of DHA and Clifton are advised to carry their ID cards for accessibility during snap checking.


4. Traffic will not be allowed to move from Mai Kolachi
Road to Submarine Chowrangi after 9pm.


5. As the KPT Bridge near the US Consulate will be closed, the roads from Bilawal Chowrangi to Jinnah Bridge will be opened. However, commuters will not be allowed to park anywhere on Abdullah Haroon, Mai Kolachi, MT Khan roads and Sharea Faisal.


IGP’s orders


Provincial police chief Ghulam Hyder Jamali has ordered foolproof security arrangements for New Year’s Eve.


A police spokesperson said the IGP has ordered strict implementation of the ban on one-wheeling, riding motorcycles without silencers and aerial firing.


Police will be patrolling and snap-checking vehicles near recreational places including parks and the beach; shopping centres, fast food chains, and departmental stores; and also on main thoroughfares.
