HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Madison County Health Department encourages men to get a free prostate screening this week.

Men can stop by the Madison County Health Department Annex on Max Luther Drive for the free screening. They’ll be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14.

The health department says any man could fall victim to prostate cancer, which is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer among US men. Studies indicate that about 1 out of every 6 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point during their life time, and 1 of every 36 will die from the disease.

Alabama is second in  the nation for prostate cancer death rates, and data shows that only 50% of men in the state over age 50 get screened annually. It is recommended that men start receiving yearly screenings during the age range of 45-50.

Brochures with more information on prostate cancer and general men’s health will be available at the screening.
